Cd2+ cation doped CsPbCl3 single crystals were synthesized, and their luminescent properties were investigated under excitation with synchrotron radiation quanta with energy greater than Eg and at a sample temperature of 12 K. Pure single crystals exhibit a narrow band of exciton emission at 416.7 nm. Doping the single crystals leads to a high-energy shift of the excitonic luminescence, the appearance of new luminescent bands, the broadening of the luminescent bands, an increase in the decay time constants, and a significant enhancement of the luminescence intensity. The observed changes in luminescent parameters upon doping are discussed in terms of the crystal structure ordering, a decrease in the number of defects responsible for capturing charge carriers at the stage of electronic excitation thermalization, and a decrease in defects that quench excitonic luminescence. Doped single crystals with decay times of the order of 0.4 ns and intensities that significantly exceed the intensity of pure single crystals can be promising scintillation materials for positron emission tomography in the time-of-flight mode. Bound states in the continuum (BIC) have attracted a great deal of attention in all-dielectric nanophotonics due to their ability to provide spectral features with a very high-quality factor. By definition, BIC cannot be observed in the far field because of the symmetry mismatch with the modes propagating in free space. Despite this, in systems with slightly reduced symmetry, the condition for BIC is lifted, which gives rise to the high-quality resonant features in their optical response. In particular, in photonic crystal slabs, which support the BIC states, the symmetry reduction allows modification of light propagation, reflection, or emission. In this work, using the photonic crystal slabs with embedded Ge nanoislands, we have shown the ability to control their light emission features by symmetry breaking. It was demonstrated that such symmetry breaking due to a change in the basis vectors of the photonic crystal unit cell or a change in the unit cell internal structure could provide independent control knobs to alter the spectral position of photonic crystal modes, their dispersion, and degeneracy. Temperature dependence of the luminescence characteristics of Lu1.84Y0.16SiO5:Ce (LYSO:Ce) scintillator was investigated under x-ray excitation. The luminescence decay time, light yield, radioluminescence (RL) spectra, spatial resolution, and luminescence homogeneity from 300 to 550 K are experimentally examined with multiple x-ray facilities. The results show that the decay time and light output of the LYSO:Ce scintillator will decrease from 42 to 1.89 ns and from 32 000 to 1120 photons/MeV with a temperature increase from 300 to 550 K, respectively. The RL spectrum experiments demonstrate that the spectrum peak will move from 414 to 426 nm when adjusting the temperature from 300 to 550 K. The spatial resolution experiments show that the spatial resolution is hardly affected and can reach as high as 2.5 lp/mm when increasing the temperature from 300 to 550 K, and the luminescence homogeneity remains unchanged with increase in temperature. In this work, we compare the luminescence results obtained on InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well (QW) structures with different numbers of QWs. Structures are designed for scintillating applications, where large QW number covering particle penetration depth is necessary, and fast luminescence response is required. Special attention is devoted to increase the intensity of fast excitonic QW emission and to decrease the luminescence of the QW defect band, which has slower luminescence response and is undesired for fast scintillator applications. We found that increasing the In content in QWs suppresses the defect band luminescence and decreasing the QW growth rate increases the photoluminescence (PL) intensity of excitonic luminescence. We also show that increasing the number of InGaN further improves the PL properties of InGaN QWs. The photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence characteristics are compared and discussed. Polystyrene film nanocomposites of 0.3mm thickness with embedded LaPO4-Pr nanoparticles (40 wt. %) have been synthesized. The luminescent and kinetic properties of these polystyrene composites with embedded LaPO4-Pr nanoparticles upon pulse X-ray excitation have been studied. The luminescence intensity of this polystyrene material significantly increases as it is loaded with inorganic LaPO4-Pr nanoparticles. Nanocomposite films reveal luminescence spectra typical for polystyrene activators (p-Terphenyl and POPOP) and two components of decay time kinetics of luminescence with 12 ns and 2.8 ns time constants, depending on nanoparticle sizes. The component with 12 ns decay constant arises due to the radiative transfer of the 5d-4f-emission of the Pr3+ ions in the LaPO4 nanoparticles to the polystyrene. The decay component with the time constant 2.8 ns originates from luminescence of polystyrene matrix excited by electrons emitted from nanoparticles due to the photoeffect. This nonradiative mechanism of energy transfer from nanoparticles to polystyrene matrices is determinative for nanoparticles, as their sizes are smaller than a mean free path of an electron. We present a table-top extreme ultraviolet (XUV) beamline for measuring time- and frequency-resolved XUV-excited optical luminescence (XEOL) with additional femtosecond-resolution XUV transient absorption spectroscopy functionality. XUV pulses are generated via high-harmonic generation using a near-infrared pulse in a noble gas medium and focused to excite luminescence from a solid sample. The luminescence is collimated and guided into a streak camera where its spectral components are temporally resolved with picosecond temporal resolution. We time-resolve XUV-excited luminescence and compare the results to luminescence decays excited at longer wavelengths for three different materials: (i) sodium salicylate, an often used XUV scintillator; (ii) fluorescent labeling molecule 4-carbazole benzoic (CB) acid; and (iii) a zirconium metal oxo-cluster labeled with CB, which is a photoresist candidate for extreme-ultraviolet lithography. Our results establish time-resolved XEOL as a new technique to measure transient XUV-driven phenomena in solid-state samples and identify decay mechanisms of molecules following XUV and soft-x-ray excitation. This study reports host-controlled luminescence from 4f0 and 4f 1 Ce levels in SrZnO2, probed through x-ray absorption near edge and photoluminescence spectroscopies. O K-edge perceived the presence of Ce 4f states at the bottom of conduction band and 5d states merging with conduction band. Due to such an arrangement, a fast radiative emission (11.15 ns, average) is observed through charge transfer excitation from host to empty 4f0 Ce levels. Ce content is found to vary the site occupancy, which is then modifying the population of 4f0 and 4f 1 energy states by altering Ce–O bond covalency. Dy3+-, Tb3+-activated, and Tb3+/Dy3+-coactivated oxyfluoride borogermanate scintillating glasses with the density of about 6.50 g/cm³ were successfully synthesized by a melt-quenching method. The structure and optical properties including transmittance, photoluminescence (excitation and emission spectra), photoluminescence decay, and X-ray excited luminescence (XEL) behaviors were studied in detail. Our results reveal that the energy transfer efficiency from Dy3+ to Tb3+ ions increases with an increase of Tb3+ concentration. The energy transfer mechanism is determined to be electric dipole–dipole interaction. However, the XEL intensity of Tb3+ decreases with the incorporation of sensitizer Dy3+ into borogermanate scintillating glass, which may result from the different mechanisms under ultraviolet light and X-ray excitation. The dependence of X-ray excited luminescence intensity on BaF2 nanoparticle size was studied. A sharp decrease of self-trapped exciton luminescence intensity was observed when the nanoparticle size is less than 80 nm. The main mechanism of the luminescence quenching is caused by the escape of electrons from the nanoparticles. Escape of electrons from nanoparticles is confirmed by the considerable increase of luminescence intensity of the polystyrene scintillator with embedded BaF2 nanoparticles comparing with pure polystyrene scintillator. Understanding scintillation physics and nonproportionality is essential to accelerate materials discovery that has been restricted due to the difficulties inherent to large crystal growth and complex nature of gamma-solid interaction. Taking advantage of less restrictive growth and deposition techniques for smaller crystal sizes or thin films and better fundamental understanding of ion-solid interactions, a unique ion approach is demonstrated to effectively screen candidate scintillators with relatively small size and evaluate their nonlinear scintillation response. Response of CaF2:Eu and YAlO3:Ce scintillators to single ions of H+, He+, and O3+ are measured by the corresponding pulse height over a continuous energy range using a time-of-flight-scintillator-photoelectric multiplier tube apparatus. Nonlinear response of the scintillators under ionizing ion irradiation is quantitatively evaluated by considering the energy partitioning process. In a differential energy deposition region with negligible displacement damage, the low, medium and high excitation energy deposition density (Dexci) can be produced by energetic H+, He+ and O3+ ions, respectively, and significantly different impacts on the response characteristics of these two benchmark scintillators are observed. For CaF2:Eu, the scintillation efficiency under ion irradiation monotonically decreases with increasing excitation-energy density. In contrast, the response efficiency of YAlO3:Ce scintillation initially increases with excitation-energy density at low excitation-energy densities, goes through a maximum, and then decreases with further increasing excitation-energy density. The fundamental mechanism causing these different response behaviours in the scintillators is based on the competition between the scintillation response and the nonradiative quenching process under different excitation densities, which is also the main origin of the nonlinear response of the scintillators to irradiation. This article reports on a cryogenic setup that can be used for multifunctional experimental purposes. The temperature of the setup can be set from 10 K to 300 K. Different kinds of experiments were carried out in this experimental setup such as (1) luminescence emission, light yield, and decay time measurement under excitation of 266 nm laser and 280 nm LED sources, (2) thermoluminescence (TL) measurement under an x-ray excitation source, (3) scintillation property measurements such as light output, energy resolution, and decay time under 137Cs (662 keV γ-rays) and 241Am (5.4 MeV α) isotope sources, and (4) scintillation measurement under a 90Sr beta source through the continuous single-photon counting technique. The luminescence and scintillation properties of various molybdate and tungstate crystals such as CaMoO4, Na2Mo2O7, Pb2MoO5, CdWO4, and ZnWO4 are characterized and reported in the present work. The TL measurement of a CaMoO4 crystal is carried out from 10 K to 300 K, and various kinetic parameters such as order of kinetics, frequency factor, activation energy, and figure of merit are calculated for different TL peaks. As the temperature goes down from room to 10 K, the light yield of all studied crystals increases. Since the light yield of the crystal increases as temperature decreases toward 10 K, this experimental setup can be used for the characterization of luminescence and scintillation properties of a single crystal for rare event searches such as neutrinoless double-beta decay and dark matter. Using a phenomenological approach, the light yield is derived for inorganic scintillators as a function of the rates of linear, bimolecular, and Auger processes occurring in the electron track initiated by an x ray or a γ-ray photon. A relation between the track length and incident energy is also derived. It is found that the nonproportionality in the light yield can be eliminated if either nonlinear processes of interaction among the excited electrons, holes, and excitons can be eliminated from occurring or the high density situation can be relieved by diffusion of carriers from the track at a faster rate than the rate of activation of nonlinear processes. The influence of the track length and radius on the yield nonproportionality is discussed in view of the known experimental results. Inventing new inorganic scintillating materials with high carrier mobility can lead to a class of proportional inorganic scintillators. In this paper, we investigate the temperature dependence of luminescence characteristics of highly efficient cerium-doped scintillator, lutetium-yttrium orthosilicate Lu2(1-x)Y2xSiO5:Ce3+. The photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra have been measured in a broad temperature range. The temperature dependence of the Ce1 and Ce2 decay times shows the onset of decay time decrease at about 300 K. This observation demonstrates that unlike so far reported, the Ce2 center is not substantially quenched until room temperature. The aluminate perovskites YAlO3 (YAP) and LuAlO3 (LuAP) have been identified as potential scintillator materials due to their high light output and short decay time. However, the performance of these materials is significantly reduced by point defects. In this paper, atomistic simulations provide insight into the types of point defects that are expected under various conditions in YAP and LuAP, as well as other REAlO3 compounds (where RE denotes a rare earth ion ranging from Lu to La or Y). For example, we predict that cation antisites are the dominate intrinsic defect for smaller REAlO3 compounds, with the concentration of Schottky-type defects increasing for compounds with larger RE ions. We also predict that cation vacancies will be present in association with the oxidation of the Ce activator. From these results, we show how defects affect different aspects of the scintillation process. X-ray luminescence from CdTe nanoparticles is observed when CdTe nanoparticles are encapsulated into BaFBr:Eu2+ phosphors. In contrast, negligible x-ray luminescence is observed from the unencapsulated nanoparticles, either in solution or in solid form. The origin of the x-ray luminescence is attributed to the effective energy transfer from Eu2+ ions to CdTe nanoparticles in the nanocomposite materials. The x-ray luminescence of these nanocomposites is dose dependent and the emission wavelength is size adjustable which may allow use as a type of dosimeter for both in vitro and in vivo applications. Cerium doped lutetium pyro-silicate Ce3+:Lu2Si2O7 (LPS) is an inorganic scintillator that displays particularly promising performance. The spectroscopic properties of pure and Ce3+-doped Lu2Si2O7 are investigated. X-ray-excited luminescence, time-resolved excitation and emission spectroscopy, as well as decay time spectra are presented. For better understanding of the scintillation mechanism, several approaches were undertaken to locate the Ce3+ energy levels relative to levels of LPS host. To estimate the energy position of Ce3+ 4f levels with respect to the valence band, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) was used. Yb[sup 3+]-doped YAlO[sub 3] single crystals have been grown by the Czochralski method with a radio-frequency heating system. Starting melt compositions of Y[sub 1-x]Yb[sub x]AlO[sub 3] were varied with x=0.02, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.45. The best Yb[sup 3+]-doped YAlO[sub 3] single crystals were obtained for a growth rate of 1.0 mm/h. The grown crystals were transparent and almost colorless. To investigate the homogeneity, the effective segregation coefficient of the Yb ion was estimated. The absorption, photoluminescence, and luminescence decay kinetics of Yb[sup 3+]-doped YAlO[sub 3] were investigated for the temperature range 4–300 K. Very fast charge transfer luminescence of Yb[sup 3+] from the near ultraviolet to visible spectral range and the high density of the Yb-rich YAlO[sub 3] makes this material a promising candidate for fast scintillators. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. The energy levels of electron traps (namely, defect complexes associated with oxygen vacancies) in Gd3Al 2Ga3O12:Ce (GAGG:Ce) were studied at 12 K using mid-infrared (MIR) light pulses from a free-electron laser (FEL) as the probe light. Ce3+ 5d–4f luminescence was stimulated by the MIR light pulse following an ultraviolet light pulse. Stimulation of Ce3+ 5d–4f luminescence by MIR light pulses was pronounced above 0.31 eV. This result is consistent with that of previous work based on a trap-mediated luminescence model. It is concluded that the electron trap levels are located 0.31 eV below the bottom of the conduction band. Application of CaMoO4 as a scintillation target in cryogenic rare event searches relies on the understanding of scintillation properties of the material at the temperatures at which these detectors operate. We devised and implemented a detection module with a low-temperature photomultiplier from Hamamatsu (model R8520-06) powered by a Cockcroft-Walton generator. The detector module containing the CaMoO4 crystal was placed in a ³He/4He dilution refrigerator and used to measure scintillation characteristics of CaMoO4 in the millikelvin temperature range. At the lowest temperature achieved, the energy resolution of CaMoO4 for 122 keV γ from a 57Co source is found to be 30%, and the fast and slow decay constants are 40.6±0.8 μs and 3410±50 μs, respectively. The temperature variation of the CaMoO4 decay kinetics is discussed in terms of a three-level model of the emission center. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It was recently shown that the energy resolution of Ce-doped LaBr3 scintillator radiation detectors can be crucially improved by co-doping with Sr, Ca, or Ba. Here, we outline a mechanism for this enhancement on the basis of electronic structure calculations. We show that (i) Br vacancies are the primary electron traps during the initial stage of thermalization of hot carriers, prior to hole capture by Ce dopants; (ii) isolated Br vacancies are associated with deep levels; (iii) Sr doping increases the Br vacancy concentration by several orders of magnitude; (iv) SrLa binds to VBr resulting in a stable neutral complex; and (v) association with Sr causes the deep vacancy level to move toward the conduction band edge. The latter is essential for reducing the effective carrier density available for Auger quenching during thermalization of hot carriers. Subsequent de-trapping of electrons from SrLa-VBr complexes can activate Ce dopants that have previously captured a hole leading to luminescence. This mechanism implies an overall reduction of Auger quenching of free carriers, which is expected to improve the linearity of the photon light yield with respect to the energy of incident electron or photon. A fast component of 2.2 ns from the LSO thin-film scintillator was achieved through coupling of scintillator with surface plasmons of silver nanoparticles. From the emission spectra, the observed fast component is from the transition of 5d to 4f level of Ce3+ in LSO. The fast component is attributed to the enhanced spontaneous recombination rate due to the surface plasmons. The present demonstration provides an interesting approach to improve the timing resolution of scintillator, which is distinguished from these conventional methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In fusion plasmas gamma ray emission is caused by reactions of fast particles, such as fusion alpha particles, with impurities. Gamma ray spectroscopy at JET has provided valuable diagnostic information on fast fuel as well as fusion product ions. Improvements of these measurements are needed to fully exploit the flux increase provided by future high power experiments at JET and ITER. Limiting aspects are, for instance, the count rate capability due to a high neutron/gamma background combined with slow detector response and a modest energy resolution due to the low light yield of the scintillators. This paper describes the solutions developed for achieving higher energy resolution, signal to background, and time resolution. The detector design is described based on the new BrLa3 scintillator crystal. The paper will focus on hardware development, including a photomultiplier tube capable of stable operation at counting rate as high as 1 MHz, the magnetic shielding, and the fast digital data acquisition system. Scintillation materials based on polystyrene (PS) have been investigated. Para-terphenyl was employed as a fluorescent molecule (fluor) that functions as a wavelength shifter. A clear increase in photon yield of the scintillation materials relative to the pure PS was observed, which cannot be explained by the conventional theory of scintillation mechanism. Furthermore, the photon yield increased with flour concentration in accordance with a power-law. Here we reveal the emergence of a luminescence of PS-based scintillation materials and demonstrate that their photon yields can be controlled by the fluor concentration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new scintillator material consisting of a methanol adduct of cerium trichloride with the composition CeCl3(CH3OH)4 has been discovered and crystallized in the form of large single crystals by solution growth in methanol. The peak emission of the x-ray-excited luminescence spectrum occurs at ∼364 nm. A light yield of up to ∼16 600 photons/MeV and an energy resolution of 11.4% were obtained using 662 keV gamma-ray photons. The scintillator decay time for 662 keV gamma-ray excitation was measured using the time-correlated, single-photon-counting method, and a nominal value of 64.4 ns was obtained. The molecular adduct CeCl3(CH3OH)4 represents the first example of a rare-earth, metal-organic scintillator that is applicable to gamma ray, x ray, and neutron detection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors demonstrate improved light yield from plastic scintillators utilizing a phosphorescent dopant to collect both singlet and triplet excitations created by ionizing radiation. They specifically considered poly(vinyltoluene) and poly(9-vinylcarbazole) doped with an Ir phosphor. They present the spectral, temporal, and integrated yield responses as a function of dopant concentration to pulses of 10 keV electrons. Both doped plastics yield a maximum light output of ∼200% of anthracene with decay times <850 ns. Pr-doped Lu3(GaxAl1-x)5O12:Pr, x=0–1, single crystals were grown by the micro-pulling-down method. We study luminescence and scintillation characteristics of the sample set focusing on their dependence on the gallium content. For x=0.4 we obtain the high figure-of-merit material with elevated density, high efficiency, and very fast scintillation response below 20 ns without any slower components. Improvement of scintillation performance is explained as due to the absence of the antisite LuAl defects that was for the first time realized in such bulk garnet single crystals grown from the high temperature melt. Images with 14 MeV neutrons of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) D,T fusion show the regions of most intense fusion burn, while images based on lower-energy “downscattered” neutrons can reveal regions of nonburning D,T fuel. The downscattered images can help to understand ICF implosion dynamics. Recording downscattered images is difficult because the images are relatively weak, and because they may be obscured by residual “afterglow” of more intense 14 MeV images. The effect of afterglow can be estimated by adding a sequence of images for neutron energies from 14 MeV down to the downscatteed energy of interest. The images will be subject to decay factors which depend on the time response of the neutron scintillator. A scintillator probe for escaping fast ion diagnostics has been developed in the Large Helical Device. This probe is capable of traveling across a divertor leg and sweeping the aperture angle rotationally with respect to the axis of the probe shaft. Pitch angle and gyro radius resolutions are estimated numerically by using a Monte Carlo orbit simulation. The result shows that the detector has sufficient resolution in pitch angle and gyro radius for our target plasmas. Under the neutral beam injected plasma, a signal derived from fast ions was obtained on the scintillator plate and analyzed by using the recorded camera image. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Because the rate of indirect photon-electron conversion for scintillator materials coupled with arrays of photodiodes is at least 25 times smaller than the rate of direct conversion, we examine the conditions to be fulfilled by semiconductors undergoing such direct conversion to be applied to x-ray imaging. Bulk grown materials are not well suited to this application, because large defect concentrations give rise to strongly nonuniform electronic properties. We argue that only epitaxial layers are suitable for use as imaging devices and we illustrate our argument using the case of thick epitaxial GaAs layers. Detectors made with such layers exhibit a good energy resolution, a charge collection efficiency which approaches 1, linearity over more than three orders of amplitude, no afterglow (a response time shorter than 20 μs), and no charge-induced polarization effects. The time-resolved studies of luminescence for scintillators based on oxides, alkaline-earth fluorides, and alkaline halides excited by x-ray synchrotron radiation with flux density Nhy=6×(1014–1016) photon s-1 cm-2 are reported. The changes of spectral and time luminescence properties of above-mentioned materials were observed. Two various models for understanding the observed effects are suggested. Barium fluoride (BaF2) is an inorganic scintillation material used for the detection of X/gamma radiation due to its relatively high density, equivalent atomic number, radiation hardness, and high luminescence. BaF2 has a potential capacity to be used in gamma ray timing experiments due to the prompt decay emission components. It is known that the light output from BaF2 has three decay components: two prompt of those at approximately 195 nm and 220 nm with a decay constant around 600-800 ps and a more intense, slow component at approximately 310 nm with a decay constant around 630 ns which hinders fast timing experiments. We report here the development of a fast radiation detector based on a BaF2 scintillation crystal employing a special optical filter device, a multiple reflection multi-path ultraviolet region short-wavelength pass light guides (MRMP-short pass filter) by using selective reflection technique, for which the intensity of the slow component is reduced to less than 1%. We describe the design and operation of a unique hydraulic press for the study of scintillator materials under isostatic pressure. This press, capable of developing a pressure of a gigapascal, consists of a large sample chamber pressurized by a two-stage hydraulic amplifier. The optical detection of the scintillation light emitted by the sample is performed, through a large aperture optical port, by a photodetector located outside the pressure vessel. In addition to providing essential pressure-dependent studies on the emission characteristics of radioluminescent materials, this apparatus is being developed to elucidate the mechanisms behind the recently observed dependency of light-yield nonproportionality on electronic band structure. A scintillator-based energetic ion loss detector has been successfully commissioned on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak. This probe is located just below the outer midplane, where it captures ions of energies up to 2 MeV resulting from ion cyclotron resonance heating. After passing through a collimating aperture, ions impact different regions of the scintillator according to their gyroradius (energy) and pitch angle. The probe geometry and installation location are determined based on modeling of expected lost ions. The resulting probe is compact and resembles a standard plasma facing tile. Four separate fiber optic cables view different regions of the scintillator to provide phase space resolution. Evolving loss levels are measured during ion cyclotron resonance heating, including variation dependent upon individual antennae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
