Zinc tungstate is a semiconductor known for its favorable photocatalytic, photoluminescence, and scintillation properties, coupled with its relatively low cost, reduced toxicity, and high stability in biological and catalytic environments. In particular, zinc tungstate evinces scintillation properties, namely the ability to emit visible light upon absorption of energetic radiation such as x rays, which has led to applications not only as radiation detectors but also for biomedical applications involving the delivery of optical light to deep tissue, such as photodynamic therapy and optogenetics. Here, we report on the synthesis of zinc tungstate nanorods generated via an optimized but facile method, which allows for synthetic control over the aspect ratio of the as-synthesized anisotropic motifs via rational variation of the solution pH. We investigate the effect of aspect ratio on their resulting photoluminescent and radioluminescent properties. We further demonstrate the potential of these zinc tungstate nanorods for biomedical applications, such as photodynamic therapy for cancer treatment, by analyzing their toxicological profile within cell lines and neurons. The ability to visualize x-ray and neutron emission from fusion plasmas in 3D is critical to understand the origin of the complex shapes of the plasmas in experiments. Unfortunately, this remains challenging in experiments that study a fusion concept known as Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion (MagLIF) due to a small number of available diagnostic views. Here, we present a basis function-expansion approach to reconstruct MagLIF stagnation plasmas from a sparse set of x-ray emission images. A set of natural basis functions is "learned" from training volumes containing quasi-helical structures whose projections are qualitatively similar to those observed in experimental images. Tests on several known volumes demonstrate that the learned basis outperforms both a cylindrical harmonic basis and a simple voxel basis with additional regularization, according to several metrics. Two-view reconstructions with the learned basis can estimate emission volumes to within 11% and those with three views recover morphology to a high degree of accuracy. The technique is applied to experimental data, producing the first 3D reconstruction of a MagLIF stagnation column from multiple views, providing additional indications of liner instabilities imprinting onto the emitting plasma. The α-hydroxyethyl radical (CH3·CHOH, 2A) is a key intermediate in ethanol biochemistry, combustion, atmospheric chemistry, radiation chemistry, and astrochemistry. Experimental data on the vibrational spectrum of this radical are crucially important for reliable detection and understanding of the chemical dynamics of this species. This study represents the first detailed experimental report on the infrared absorption bands of the α-hydroxyethyl radical complemented by ab initio computations. The radical was generated in solid para-H2 and Xe matrices via the reactions of hydrogen atoms with matrix-isolated ethanol molecules and radiolysis of isolated ethanol molecules with x rays. The absorption bands with maxima at 3654.6, 3052.1, 1425.7, 1247.9, 1195.6 (1177.4), and 1048.4 cm−1, observed in para-H2 matrices appearing upon the H· atom reaction, were attributed to the OHstr, α-CHstr, CCstr, COstr + CCObend, COstr, and CCstr + CCObend vibrational modes of the CH3·CHOH radical, respectively. The absorption bands with the positions slightly red-shifted from those observed in para-H2 were detected in both the irradiated and post-irradiation annealed Xe matrices containing C2H5OH. The results of the experiments with the isotopically substituted ethanol molecules (CH3CD2OH and CD3CD2OH) and the quantum-chemical computations at the UCCSD(T)/L2a_3 level support the assignment. The photolysis with ultraviolet light (240–300 nm) results in the decay of the α-hydroxyethyl radical, yielding acetaldehyde and its isomer, vinyl alcohol. In this study, we observed natural methane (CH4) hydrate sediments, which are a type of unconventional natural gas resources, using x-ray computed tomography (CT). Because CH4 hydrates are formed by hydrogen bonding of water molecules with CH4, material decomposition becomes challenging when CH4 hydrates coexist with liquid or solid water in natural sediments. Tri-contrast (absorption, refraction, and scattering) imaging was performed via diffraction enhanced x-ray CT optics using monochromatic synchrotron x rays. The quantitative characterization of the contrast changes successfully enabled the decomposition of CH4 hydrates coexisting with frozen seawater (ice) in natural sediments obtained from the Okhotsk Sea. This study reveals complementary structural information about the microtexture and spatial relation among CH4 hydrates, ice, and pores by utilizing the distinct physical properties of x rays when passing through the materials. A superbubble is a hot, dilute, and X-ray-emitting gas cavity produced by stellar winds and supernova explosions. It is an intriguing feature for the study of stellar feedback processes. We report a study of possible superbubbles in the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). We identify one out of 83 extended sources as a strong superbubble candidate, SB1, from the M31 X-ray source catalogue. SB1 is located in the northern disc of M31 and exhibits soft, extended X-ray emission surrounded by an Hα shell. The XMM–Newton spectral analysis reveals that SB1 has a temperature of ∼0.14 keV and an X-ray luminosity of |$L_{\rm X}\sim 3.5\times 10^{37}\,{\rm erg\, s}^{-1}$| in the 0.3–10.0 keV band. Two stellar clusters are found at the west rim of SB1. The estimated age of SB1 is similar to that of an overlapping young stellar cluster, and the colour-magnitude diagram reveals the presence of young stellar objects with an age of less than 10 Myr. We propose that SB1 is a superbubble, likely having triggered star formation in this cluster by compressing the accumulated gas, thereby leading to the formation of gas-dense regions. A new one-dimensional hybrid [APCHA]Cu2I4 was designed and applied as an X-ray scintillator. It exhibits broad-band green emission with a high PLQY of 74.80% and excellent stability. It demonstrates radioluminescence property with a light yield of 28 336 photons MeV−1, detection limit of 41 nGyair s−1, and high spatial limit of 13.95 lp mm−1 in X-ray imaging. Methylfluoride and hydrogen fluoride react with powerful methylating agent [SO2Me]+ in a temperature-dependent addition reaction to form methylated fluorosulfuric acid [FS(OMe)2][Sb2F11] and methylated fluorosulfuric acid methyl ester [FS(OH)(OMe)][SbF6], respectively. Several medical consultations and examinations have been undertaken online since the Covid outbreak. However, when private data was communicated over the internet or uploaded to the cloud, medical information became more susceptible to security risks. Steganography is a technique that can be used to hide sensitive information within a cover image. This paper presents four improved algorithms to enhance steganography's performance in medical images. A full-size hidden image that is as huge as a cover image cannot be handled by previous methods, which is what the algorithmic design is meant to address. Several creative methods are presented, including the computation of Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) coefficients based on scaled floating values, the addition of an adaptive compression matrix, and a new approach for systematically dispersing a concealed number of bits across multiple separate locations in the cover image. The results of the experiment showed a notable advancement over the earlier research. Our secret image size is substantially larger than the past studies, yet the structure similarity index matrix (SSIM) of the best reconstructed secret image is close to ideal, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and the payload capacity are higher than in the previous studies. This research is beneficial since it contributes to a medical application for enhancing the security of information concealed in chest X-ray images. MACS J0600.1-2008 (MACS0600) is an X-ray-luminous, massive galaxy cluster at |$z_{\mathrm{d}}=0.43$|⁠ , studied previously by the REionization LensIng Cluster Survey and ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey projects which revealed a complex, bimodal mass distribution and an intriguing high-redshift object behind it. Here, we report on the results of a combined analysis of the extended strong lensing (SL), X-ray, Sunyaev–Zeldovich (SZ), and galaxy luminosity-density properties of this system. Using new JWST and ground-based Gemini-N and Keck data, we obtain 13 new spectroscopic redshifts of multiply-imaged galaxies and identify 12 new photometric multiple-image systems and candidates, including two multiply-imaged |$z\sim 7$| objects. Taking advantage of the larger areal coverage, our analysis reveals an additional bimodal, massive SL structure which we measure spectroscopically to lie adjacent to the cluster and whose existence was implied by previous SL-modelling analyses. While based in part on photometric systems identified in ground-based imaging requiring further verification, our extended SL model suggests that the cluster may have the second-largest critical area and effective Einstein radius observed to date, |$A_{\mathrm{crit}}\simeq 2.16\, \mathrm{arcmin}^2$| and |$\theta _{\mathrm{E}}=49.7^{\prime \prime }\pm 5.0^{\prime \prime }$| for a source at |$z_{\mathrm{s}}=2$|⁠ , enclosing a total mass of |$M(\lt \theta _{\mathrm{E}})=(4.7\pm 0.7)\times 10^{14}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$|⁠. These results are also supported by the galaxy luminosity distribution, and the SZ and X-ray data. Yet another, probably related massive cluster structure, discovered in X-rays 5 arcmin (1.7 Mpc) further north, suggests that MACS0600 is part of an even larger filamentary structure. This discovery adds to several recent detections of massive structures around SL galaxy clusters and establishes MACS0600 as a prime target for future high-redshift surveys with JWST. As a typical example of constrained sintering, the behavior of a complex ceramic powder system with multi-heterogeneities has been investigated. This powder system comprises inherent imperfections as well as rigid inclusions that act as constraints to densification. The sintering process of the system was monitored by in-situ X-ray nano-tomography at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). This technique enables three-dimensional (3D) imaging of the microstructure with a voxel size of 25 nm. The images obtained reveal the distribution of imperfections in the powder system, such as particle aggregation and pore segregation in and around them. The subsequent in-situ evaluations show the evolution of the microstructure in the presence of inclusions. The study addresses the questions pertaining to the effect of the added constraints, the consequent crack generation and their implication on the final densification of the material. Aiming at confirming the chemical structure, herein, we report the crystal structure of Arbortristoside-A, isolated from the seeds of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis Linn. and investigated by single crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis. The unambiguously established structure of Arbortristoside-A not only addresses previously reported structural flaws but also encourages its chemical, computational, and physiological studies as a lead drug candidate of pharmaceutical significance. Background: Accurate syndesmotic reduction is necessary for achieving joint congruity and better functional outcomes. Radiographs alone don’t suffice, and CT scans are required for the evaluation of postoperative syndesmotic reduction. Methods: All patients who underwent ankle syndesmotic reduction and fixation from December 2019 to July 2021 were taken into the study. Predefined measurements were taken in postoperative radiographs and axial CT images were taken postoperatively. Sensitivity and specificity of X-rays when compared to CT scan were evaluated. Results: Twenty eight patients were included in the study and 13 cases were found to have syndesmotic malreduction in radiographs as per TCS and TFO in AP view and TFO and MCS measurements in mortise view. Five out of 28 cases were found to have syndesmotic malreduction in CT axial cuts as per standard anterior and posterior measurements. Hence 17.85% cases were malreduced in our study as per the gold standard (CT scan). The incidence of syndesmotic malreduction after fixation was 17.85%. Radiographs had a sensitivity of 60% and specificity of 56.5% in detecting malreduction. Conclusion: CT scan is necessary to accurately diagnose syndesmotic malreduction after open reduction and internal fixation of ankle fractures with associated syndesmotic injuries. The afterglows of gamma-ray bursts are believed to have originated from a relativistic jet, which is driven by the merger of compact binary objects or the core collapse of massive stars. Some of their jets may consist of two components: a faster (but narrower) jet and a slower (but wider) jet. The light curves produced by the interaction between the two-component jet and the surrounding medium typically exhibit a chromatic break in multiple bands. For GRB 191221B, the optical light curve of the afterglow exhibits a plateau from 33 to 143 s, followed by a steeper decay that is consistent with the characteristics of reverse shock from an arbitrarily magnetized ejecta. The flattening at ∼10 ks exhibits chromaticity relative to the X-ray afterglow. We propose that the two-component jet scenario can explain this observational result: For the X-ray afterglow, the narrow jet forward shock is dominated until ∼10 ks, and then both the narrow and wide components contribute comparable flux from the forward shock. For the optical afterglow, the first 2 ks is dominated by the narrow jet reverse shock emission (the plateau from 33 to 143 s is due to the jet being magnetized). Between 2 and 10 ks, the forward shock of the narrow jet dominates the optical afterglow, then transitions to wide component forward shock dominance, causing a chromatic plateau. Ferroptosis is a promising strategy for cancer therapy, with numerous inhibitors of its braking axes under investigation as potential drugs. However, few studies have explored the potential of activating the driving axes to induce ferroptosis. Herein, phosphatidylcholine peroxide decorating liposomes (LIPPCPO) are synthesized to induce ferroptosis by targeting divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1). LIPPCPO is found to boost lysosomal Fe2+ efflux by inducing cysteinylation of lysosomal DMT1, resulting in glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) suppression, glutathione depletion and ferroptosis in breast cancer cells and xenografts. Importantly, LIPPCPO induced ferroptotic cell death is independent of acquired resistance to radiation, chemotherapy, or targeted agents in 11 cancer cell lines. Furthermore, a strong synergistic ferroptosis effect is observed between LIPPCPO and an FDA-approved drug, artesunate, as well as X rays. The formula of LIPPCPO encapsulating artesunate significantly inhibits tumor growth and metastasis and improves the survival rate of breast cancer-bearing female mice. These findings provide a distinct strategy for inducing ferroptosis and highlight the potential of LIPPCPO as a vector to synergize the therapeutic effects of conventional ferroptosis inducers. This research presents an innovative approach to disease diagnosis from medical imaging data, specifically focusing on X-ray images of osteoporosis. The proposed method revolves around a Transformer-based Guided Convolutional Neural Network (TGCNN), which integrates the spatial awareness of CNNs with the sophisticated relationship modeling capabilities of Transformers. The model is meticulously trained, achieving a training accuracy of 96% and a testing accuracy of 92%, with corresponding training and testing losses of 0.0034 and 0.0364, respectively. To gauge its effectiveness, TGCNN is rigorously compared with established models, namely ResNet50, AlexNet, and DenseNet169, showcasing superior performance. ResNet50 achieves a training accuracy of 86% and testing accuracy of 82%, with losses of 0.064 and 0.174. AlexNet demonstrates a training accuracy of 83% and testing accuracy of 78%, with losses of 0.04 and 0.64. DenseNet169 attains a training accuracy of 92%, testing accuracy of 88%, and losses of 0.0674 and 0.094. The comprehensive results and comparative analysis affirm the efficacy of the proposed TGCNN model for accurate and efficient disease diagnosis from X-ray images. This work sets the stage for further advancements in medical imaging diagnostics, with potential applications in diverse datasets and real-time diagnostic scenarios. Lung and respiratory ailments are among the leading causes of illness and fatalities. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has convinced the world that early and affordable detection improves treatment. X-ray imaging systems are inexpensive and widely available. Chest X-ray (CXR) images are inadequate due to the acquiring environment and technician skill. Hence, CXR image contrast enhancement is necessary for a correct diagnosis. Various lung diseases create variable spatial variation in CXR image contrast and brightness; hence, a single contrast enhancement procedure cannot improve it. In the proposed method CXR images are first classified into four categories depending upon their quality defined by their statistical parameters, before applying adaptive gamma correction for contrast enhancement. The performance of the proposed method is compared with existing methods on four datasets for five different types of lung diseases. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using parameters, such as Root Mean Square Contrast (RMSC) to determine the relation of contrast enhancement between the original and enhanced image, Contrast Improvement Index (CII) to measure the achieved contrast enhancement and Tenengrad which calculates the variation of intensity in the direction of maximum gradient descent. The qualitative and quantitative performance of the proposed method is found better than the existing methods for CXR images for all five lung diseases, which shows the stable performance of the proposed method and improvement in the processed images. Objective: To retrospectively analyze and assess the long-term effectiveness of robotic navigation and traditional closed reduction internal fixation in the treatment of Delbet type II femoral neck fracture in children. Methods: A total of fifty-five patients diagnosed with pediatric Delbet type II femoral neck fracture, who were admitted to Foshan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine between January 2018 and June 2022, were included in this study. Among them, 22 cases of nailing under robotic navigation were set as the observation group, and 33 cases of nailing under fluoroscopy of the C-arm machine were set as the control group. All patients had their femoral neck fractures closed and repositioned first. After confirming the satisfactory fracture repositioning under the fluoroscopic view of the C-arm machine, internal fixation was performed by inserting hollow compression screws in the corresponding surgical way.A comparative analysis was conducted between the two groups to assess the disparity in the amount of X-ray exposure during surgery, the number of guide pins inserted, and the duration of the surgical procedure. The quality of comparative fracture reduction was assessed according to the Haidukewych criteria on the first postoperative hip X-ray, and the parallelism and distribution of the comparative screws were measured. The incidence of hip function and postoperative complications according to the Ratliff criteria were evaluated between each of the subgroups at the final follow-up. Results: Comparison of general information, operation duration, and quality of fracture reduction between the two groups failed to reveal statistically significant results (P > 0.05). The observation group had a lower number of X-ray exposures and guide pin placements compared to the control group, and this difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05).At the last follow-up, the observation group exhibited superior screw parallelism and distribution, as well as hip joint function, compared to the control group, and this difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The incidence of complications in the observation group was lower than that in the control group; however, the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Closed reduction and internal fixation under orthopedic robot navigation can achieve better long-term efficacy in treating Delbet type II femoral neck fracture in children. Background: This study aims to evaluate the compressive strength, solubility, radiopacity, and flow of Bromelain (BR)-modified Biodentine (BD) for direct pulp capping (DPC). This is suggested to determine the impact of BR on the physical properties of BD. Methods: Eighty samples were prepared according to the ISO and ADA specifications and evaluated for compressive strength, solubility, radiopacity, and flow. The compressive strength was evaluated at 24 h and 21 days via a universal testing machine. The solubility was determined by weight loss after 24-hours immersion in deionized water. Radiopacity was assessed via X-ray with aluminum step-wedges, and flow was measured by the diameter of the discs under a standard weight. Independent sample t-tests were used to statistically assess the data. A significance level of 5% was considered. Results: The compressive strength was 41.08 ± 1.84 MPa for BD and 40.92 ± 1.80 MPa for BR + BD after 24 h, and 88.93 ± 3.39 MPa for BD and 87.92 ± 3.76 MPa for BR + BD after 21 days, with no significant differences. Solubility was slightly greater in the BR + BD (2.75 ± 0.10%) compared to BD (2.62 ± 0.25%), but not significantly different. The radiopacity was similar between BD (2.82 ± 0.11 mm) and BR + BD (2.73 ± 0.10 mm). BR + BD resulted in significantly greater flow (9.99 ± 0.18 mm) than did BD (9.65 ± 0.27 mm) (p ≤ 0.05). The acquisition of two-dimensional X-ray images (of non-human objects) is quite expensive, primarily due to the costly flat-panel or line detectors. Reducing these costs could open up new possibilities in healthcare applications, such as inspecting limb prostheses for cracks and defects or safety-related material testing of helmets and child seats. In this contribution, two different setups of low-cost mono-pixel X-ray scanners are described: a small scanner with a working volume of 20 x 20 x 20 cm3 and a large system with a volume of 150 x 230 x 110 cm3. Using these novel mono-pixel X-ray scanning systems, various objects - ranging from an X-ray phantom and a human skull phantom to a high-end limb prosthesis with integrated electronics - were scanned and investigated. Compared to conventional X-ray systems, the mono-pixel systems can depict these objects without the distortion problems of cone beam detectors. Although the scanning procedure is time-consuming, the results are quite promising. Mono-pixel X-ray-scanning is a novel modality capable of scanning largescale objects with low-dose radiation. While it is currently not suitable for human applications due to the long scanning times, it can still be used for the non-destructive testing of large-scale medical devices, such as e.g. arm and leg prosthesis. A fraction of the active supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies in our Universe are capable of launching extreme kiloparsec-long relativistic jets. These jets are known multiband (radio to γ-ray) and multimessenger (neutrino) emitters, and some of them have been monitored over decades at all accessible wavelengths. However, several open questions remain unanswered about the processes powering these highly energetic phenomena. These jets intrinsically produce soft-to-hard X-ray emission that extends from E > 0.1 keV up to E > 100 keV, and simultaneous broadband X-ray coverage, combined with excellent timing and imaging capabilities, is required to uncover the physics of jets. Indeed, truly simultaneous soft-to-hard X-ray coverage, in synergy with current and upcoming high-energy facilities (such as IXPE, COSI, CTAO, etc.) and neutrino detectors (e.g., IceCube), would enable us to disentangle the particle population responsible for the high-energy radiation from these jets. A sensitive hard X-ray survey (F20-80 keV < 10-15erg cm-2 s-1) could unveil the bulk of their population in the early Universe. Acceleration and radiative processes responsible for the majority of their X-ray emission would be pinned down by microsecond timing capabilities at both soft and hard X-rays. Furthermore, imaging jet structures for the first time in the hard X-ray regime could unravel the origin of their high-energy emission. The proposed Probe-class mission concept High Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) combines all these required capabilities, making it the crucial next-generation X-ray telescope in the multi-messenger, time-domain era. X-rays have been observed in natural downward cloud-to-ground lightning for over 20 years and in rocket-triggered lightning for slightly less. In both cases, this energetic radiation has been detected during the stepped and dart leader phases of downward negative flashes. More recently, X-rays have also been reported during the dart leader phase of upward negative flashes. In this study, we present the observations of four upward positive lightning flashes from the Säntis Tower (2.5 km ASL) in Switzerland. These consist of the simultaneous records of electric current passing through the tower, and electric field strength and X-ray flux 20 m from the tower base. One of the flashes was captured by a high-speed camera operating at 24,000 frames per second, stills from which are also presented. We detected X-rays during the initial phase of upward negative leader propagation, which can be associated with the leader-stepping process from electric field and current waveforms. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that such measurements are reported in the literature. The obtained time-synchronised data confirm that the X-ray emissions detected are associated with the initial steps of the upward negative leader. The frequency and energy of X-ray pulses appear to decrease as functions of time, with pulses disappearing altogether within the first millisecond of the leader initiation. X-ray emission also appears to be correlated with the maximum current-derivative and the electric field change of leader steps, consistent with cold electron runaway. These observations contribute to improving our understanding of upward lightning, which is a primary source of damage to tall structures such as wind turbines and telecommunications towers, as well as aircraft during takeoff and landing. Recently, multi-modal vision-language foundation models have gained significant attention in the medical field. While these models offer great opportunities, they still face crucial challenges, such as the requirement for fine-grained knowledge understanding in computer-aided diagnosis and the capability of utilizing very limited or even no task-specific labeled data in real-world clinical applications. In this study, we present MaCo, a masked contrastive chest X-ray foundation model that tackles these challenges. MaCo explores masked contrastive learning to simultaneously achieve fine-grained image understanding and zero-shot learning for a variety of medical imaging tasks. It designs a correlation weighting mechanism to adjust the correlation between masked chest X-ray image patches and their corresponding reports, thereby enhancing the model's representation learning capabilities. To evaluate the performance of MaCo, we conducted extensive experiments using 6 well-known open-source X-ray datasets. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of MaCo over 10 state-of-the-art approaches across tasks such as classification, segmentation, detection, and phrase grounding. We have previously demonstrated that an appropriately substituted four-membered-ring 1,2-diazacyclobutene is a useful compound in organic synthesis for the introduction of strained 1,2-diazetidine rings. In order to further explore the reactivity of this interesting heterocycle, we sought a method to improve upon the poor synthetic yield reported earlier. A novel route involving the synthesis of a similarly substituted 1,2-diazetidine compound followed by free-radical bromination and base-catalyzed debromination appeared promising. While there are some studies on the synthesis of the desired 1,2-diazetidine precursor, when we attempted its synthesis, we instead observed the exclusive formation of an eight-membered "dimer"-like compound. The structure of this compound was confirmed via single-crystal X-ray analysis. Fortunately, an alternative synthetic approach for the formation of the desired 1,2-diazetidine precursor proved successful, and the structure of the precursor has been confirmed via X-ray analysis. However, unfortunately, the required bromination step proved to be more challenging than expected, and ultimately, this route had to be abandoned since the anticipated improvement upon the original yield did not seem promising. Standard plain film medical radiographs often form a valuable line of evidence to identify individuals in large‐scale fatality events. While commonly available, chest radiographs present a challenge that their analysis is somewhat more involved and complex than radiographic records of other body regions. For example, chest radiographs concern subtler morphological varieties of smaller anatomical features across a larger number of skeletal elements in contrast to frontal sinus comparisons that concern a large, (often) single, highly variable void within one bone. This does not detract from or discount chest radiographs as useful identification aids, but it does demand additional prerequisite skills in radiographic interpretation to ensure valid conclusions are attained. When subjects deviate from standardized antemortem (AM) radiographic positions and/or the image quality decreases, the complexity of a chest radiograph comparison is elevated. Generally, the current body of forensic radiographic comparison literature infrequently addresses these more complex circumstances. In this paper, we use real‐world radiographic comparison reference images from a military DVI repatriation context to illustrate these factors and outline some procedures that enable these complexities to be easily recognized and appropriately addressed at case examination. A report for an exemplar case that concurrently highlights multiple factors is presented. For novices learning radiographic comparison methods, this case review saliently demonstrates: (1) why the AM reference radiograph(s) drive(s) the radiographic comparison procedure; (2) why care should be taken for correct positioning of the cervicothoracic junction in postmortem radiography of chest elements. For the wave equation with two nonlinear terms we consider the inverse problem consisting in recovering finitely supported coefficients of the nonlinear terms by using an information about the solutions corresponding to the plane waves coming from infinity and passing through inhomogeneity. The direction of propagation of plane waves is considered as a parameter of the problem, and the solution is measured at the boundary of the domain the interior of which contains the support of the unknown coefficients at time moments close to the arrival time of the wave front. The main result is that we reduce the inverse problem to the usual X-ray tomography problem for one of the coefficients at the nonlinear terms and a new integral geometry problem for the other coefficient. Medical image datasets are essential for training models used in computer-aided diagnosis, treatment planning, and medical research. However, some challenges are associated with these datasets, including variability in data distribution, data scarcity, and transfer learning issues when using models pre-trained from generic images. This work studies the effect of these challenges at the intra- and inter-domain level in few-shot learning scenarios with severe data imbalance. For this, we propose a methodology based on Siamese neural networks in which a series of techniques are integrated to mitigate the effects of data scarcity and distribution imbalance. Specifically, different initialization and data augmentation methods are analyzed, and four adaptations to Siamese networks of solutions to deal with imbalanced data are introduced, including data balancing and weighted loss, both separately and combined, and with a different balance of pairing ratios. Moreover, we also assess the inference process considering four classifiers, namely Histogram, kNN, SVM, and Random Forest. Evaluation is performed on three chest X-ray datasets with annotated cases of both positive and negative COVID-19 diagnoses. The accuracy of each technique proposed for the Siamese architecture is analyzed separately. The results are compared to those obtained using equivalent methods on a state-of-the-art CNN, achieving an average F1 improvement of up to 3.6%, and up to 5.6% of F1 for intra-domain cases. We conclude that the introduced techniques offer promising improvements over the baseline in almost all cases and that the technique selection may vary depending on the amount of data available and the level of imbalance. Purpose: Managing the distal tibiofibular (DTF) joint remains a challenge despite recent developments. Ankle arthroscopy is emerging as a diagnostic and therapeutic means. Our study aimed to compare preoperative imaging data and arthroscopic data, with the hypothesis that imaging alone is insufficient to evaluate acute laxity, and with arthroscopy as the reference examination. Methods: All patients treated in 2023 in our department for an acute isolated DTF lesion were included prospectively. Preoperative radiographic and MRI imaging were compared with arthroscopic data. Results: Ten patients were treated. For five patients, the instability was doubtful after carrying out an appropriate imaging assessment (X-rays of both ankles, MRI). For four of these five patients, instability was confirmed by arthroscopy. Arthroscopy was useful for suturing the anterior bundle of the DTF joint for two patients and allowed for verifying the reduction in the sagittal and coronal planes for two patients. No complications were detected. Conclusions: Arthroscopy in isolated acute DTF lesions seems to provide a diagnostic and therapeutic advantage. Its use may allow for exhaustive assessment and complete repair of lesions. It must be offered as soon as possible; a delay in specialized imaging may delay therapeutic care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Screening trials and meta-analyses emphasize the ratio of cancer death rates in screening and control arms. However, this measure is diluted by the inclusion of deaths from cancers that only became detectable after the end of active screening. Methods: We review traditional analysis of cancer screening trials and show that ratio estimates are inevitably biased to the null, because follow-up (FU) must continue beyond the end of the screening period and thus includes cases only becoming detectable after screening ends. But because such cases are expected to occur in equal numbers in the two arms, calculation of the difference between the number of cancer deaths in the screening and control arms avoids this dilutional bias. This difference can be set against the number of invitations to screening; we illustrate by reanalyzing data from all trials of tomography screening of lung cancer (LC) using this measure. Results: In nine trials of LC screening from 2000 to 2013, a total of 94,441 high-risk patients were invited to be in screening or control groups, with high participation rates (average 95%). In the older trials comparing computed tomography to chest X-ray, 88,285 invitations averted 83 deaths (1068 per death averted (DA)). In the six more recent trials with no screening in the control group, 69,976 invitations averted 121 deaths (577 invitations per DA). Discussion: Screens per DA is an undiluted measure of screening's effect and it is unperturbed by the arbitrary duration of FU. This estimate can be useful for program planning and informed consent. We use Dark Energy Survey Year 3 (DES Y3) clusters with archival XMM–Newton and Chandra X-ray data to assess the centring performance of the redMaPPer cluster finder and to measure key richness observable scaling relations. We find that 10–20 per cent of redMaPPer clusters are miscentred, both when comparing to the X-ray peak position and to the visually identified central cluster galaxy. We find no significant difference in miscentring in bins of low versus high richness or redshift. The dominant reasons for miscentring include masked or missing data and the presence of other bright galaxies in the cluster. For half of the miscentred clusters, the correct central was one of the possible centrals identified by redMaPPer, while for ∼40 per cent of miscentred clusters, the correct central is not a redMaPPer member mostly due to masking. Additionally, we fit scaling relations of X-ray temperature and luminosity with richness. We find a T X–λ scatter of |$0.21\pm 0.01$|⁠. While the scatter in T X–λ is consistent in redshift bins, we find modestly different slopes, with high-redshift clusters displaying a somewhat shallower relation. Splitting based on richness, we find a marginally larger scatter for our lowest richness bin, 20 < λ < 40. We note that the robustness of the scaling relations at lower richnesses is limited by the unknown selection function, but at λ > 75, we detect nearly all of the clusters falling within existing X-ray pointings. We report on Chandra X-ray observations of SN 2016jae and SN 2018cqj, both low-luminosity Type Ia supernova (SN) that showed the presence of an H line in their early optical spectrum. No X-ray emission is detected at the location of either SN. Upper limits to the luminosity of up to 2 |$\times 10^{40}$|  erg s |$^{-1}$| are calculated for each SN, depending on the assumed spectral model, temperature, and column density. This luminosity is comparable to that of another low-luminosity Type Ia SN, SN 2018fhw, that was observed with Chandra. It is generally lower than upper limits calculated for Type Ia-CSM SNe observed in X-rays, and also below that of SN 2012ca, the only Type Ia-CSM SN to have been detected in X-rays. Comparisons are made to other Type Ia SN with an H line observed in X-rays. The observations suggest that while the density into which the SN is expanding may have been high at the time the H |$\alpha$| line was detected, it had decreased considerably by the time of X-ray observations. As the availability and importance of high energy X-ray sources grows, accurate source characterizations provide critical information for field flatness corrections, beam hardening corrections, detector response corrections, and radiation shielding assessments. This study uses MCNP6.2 to create accurate high definition angular and energy dependent X-ray source definitions for the most common high energy industrial X-ray sources at 450 kVp, 3 MVp, 6 MVp, 9 MVp, and 15 MVp. We present, in this overview article, the main features of the ID15B beamline on the new ESRF Extremely Bright Source (EBS). The ID15B beamline was fully reconstructed in 2015, considering the new capabilities of the future EBS machine. We will introduce the ID15 project, the ID15B undulator X-ray source, the optical scheme and the experimental hutch. The beamline ID15B is mostly dedicated to the determination of structural properties of solids at high pressure using angle-dispersive diffraction with diamond anvil cells. In this overview article, we present the main features of the upgraded ID27 beamline which is fully optimised to match the exceptional characteristics of the new Extremely Bright Source (EBS) of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). The ID27 beamline has been converted to a 120-m-long instrument and has undergone a major refurbishment of all its critical components including both hardware and software environments. We will successively introduce the ID27 undulator X-ray source, optical scheme and the main components of the experimental hutch. Investigation of the fruits of Rhododendron molle G. Don led to the isolation of three new grayanane-type diterpenoids, rhodomolleins LIV-LVI (1-3). The structures and absolute configurations of new compounds were fully elucidated by spectroscopic analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, including HRESIMS, 1 D and 2 D NMR data. Compounds 1-3 were evaluated for analgesic activities utilizing an acetic acid-induced writhing test in mice. Compound 1 showed a significant antinociceptive effect with writhe inhibition rates of 72.9% and 100% at doses of 6 mg/kg and 20 mg/kg in mice, respectively. The binding mode of 1 to N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor (NSF, PDB: 6IP2) was explored by molecular docking, indicating the presence of hydrogen bond interactions which account for its analgesic activity. A significant proportion of revisions after reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is attributed to the humeral component. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the radiographic and clinical outcomes of the hybrid humerus technique for RSA using a Grammont-style humeral prosthesis in an onlay fashion with metaphyseal bone impaction grafting technique and undersized stem to avoid humeral stress shielding, notching, and loosening. This is a prospective case series of patients who underwent RSA using the hybrid humerus technique with a minimum 2-year follow-up. Key steps of this technique include the use of undersized Grammont-style stem, impaction bone grafting of the proximal 5 cm of the humerus, and adjusting the height and offset of the stem depending on the patient stature, desired lateralization and distalization, and joint and soft tissue tension. Radiographic assessments were performed immediately after surgery, and at 1 and 2 years after surgery. These included assessment of metaphyseal and diaphyseal filling ratio, cortical narrowing, radiolucent lines, cortical lucencies, spot welding, scapular notching, and stem alignment. Preoperative and 2-year postoperative clinical assessments included American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score, Constant-Murley Score, University of California Los Angeles score, visual analog scale for pain, and active range of motion. Correlation between the filling ratios and clinical outcomes were also evaluated. Sixty-one patients were included in the study. The average metaphyseal and diaphyseal filling ratio on the postoperative X-ray was 0.66 and 0.54, and 0.67 and 0.54 at 2 years, respectively. Stress shielding was graded as none in 24 (40.7%), mild in 33 (55.9%), and moderate in 2 (3.4%). No stem had a change in position of more than 5°. At 2 years of follow-up, no humeral implant loosening was noted, with only 2 (3.4%) of the stems at risk of loosening. Thirty-nine (66.1%) had no notching, 14 (23.7%) were graded as mild, and 6 (10.2%) had moderate signs of notching. All clinical assessments significantly improved at 2 years (P <.001), with a weak negative correlation between visual analog scale and metaphyseal filling ratio (r = −0.268, P =.036) but none between diaphyseal filling ratio and clinical outcomes. The hybrid humerus technique of metaphyseal bone grafting with a low filling ratio stem presents a promising solution for reducing humeral complications in RSA. Objective: Neurocristopathies play a role as pathogenesis of Hirschsprung's disease and congenital heart diseases (CHDs). This study seeks to identify concomitant deformities, syndromes, and/or associations associated with Hirschsprung's disease warrant evaluation for CHDs through echocardiography. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on Hirschsprung's disease patients at Siriraj Hospital between January 2006 and December 2022. Echocardiograms were performed when clinical symptoms, abnormal chest X-rays (CXR), desaturation, heart murmurs raised suspicions of cardiovascular anomalies. Results: Among 299 Hirschsprung's disease patients, 43 (14.4%) exhibited CHDs. The sensitivity of CXR (n=268) and echocardiograms (n=51) in diagnosing CHDs was 48.8% and 100%, respectively. Predominant CHD presentations included patent ductus arteriosus (n=29), atrial septal defects (n=18), and ventricular septal defects (n=15). The presence of concomitant deformities, syndromes and/or associations associated with Hirschsprung's disease significantly heightened the likelihood of concurrent CHDs (Odds ratio = 23.56, p < 0.001). Patients with Hirschsprung's disease and concomitant deformities (n=28) (excluding syndromic or chromosomal abnormalities) had 1.73 times the odds of CHDs (p = 0.262) compared to those without concomitant deformities. Patients with Hirschsprung's disease and Down syndrome (n=34) exhibited 77.78 times higher odds of CHDs (p < 0.001), while those with other syndromes and/or associations (n=6) had 13.03 times higher odds of CHDs (p = 0.005) compared to patients lacking these conditions. Conclusion: CHDs were identified in 14.4% of Hirschsprung's disease patients. Purpose: This study aimed to identify the demographic-, radiographic-, and surgery-related factors influencing postoperative functional internal rotation (fIR) following reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA). Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, patients who underwent RTSA between June 2013 and April 2018 at a single institution were assigned to two groups ("IROgood" or "IRObad"). Patients were classified as having good fIR (≥8 points in the Constant–Murley score (CS) and fIR to the twelfth thoracic vertebra or higher) or poor fIR (≤2 points in the CS and fIR to the twelfth thoracic vertebra or lower) after RTSA with a single implant model. The minimum follow-up period was two years. Standardized shoulder-specific scores (Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Simple Shoulder Test (SST), American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Score (ASES), Constant–Murley score (CS)) were used to assess the pre- and postoperative functional status of patients. Postoperative radiographic evaluation included the distalization shoulder angle (DSA), lateralization shoulder angle (LSA), critical shoulder angle (CSA), acromiohumeral distance (AHD), glenoid inclination (GI), medialization of the center of rotation (COR), lateralization of the humerus, and distalization of the greater tuberosity. Additionally, preoperative evaluation included rotator cuff arthropathy according to Hamada, glenoid version, anterior or posterior humeral head subluxation, and fatty infiltration of the rotator cuff according to Goutallier. Univariate analysis of demographic, surgical, radiographic, and implant-associated parameters was performed to identify factors associated with postoperative fIR. The Shapiro–Wilk test assessed the normal distribution of the data. Intergroup comparisons regarding demographic and surgery-related factors were conducted using the Mann–Whitney-U Test. Radiographic changes were compared using chi-square or Fisher's exact tests. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. Results: Of a total of 42 patients, 17 (age: 73.7 ± 5.0 years, follow-up (FU) 38 months [IQR 29.5–57.5]) were included in the "IRObad" group, and 25 (age: 72 ± 6.1 years, FU 47 months [IQR 30.5–65.5]) were included in the "IROgood" group. All patients were treated with the same type of implant (glenosphere size: 36 mm, 14.3%; 39 mm, 38.1%; 42 mm, 47.6%; neck-shaft angle: 135° in 68.0%; 155° in 32.0%) and had comparable indications. Univariate analysis did not reveal any of the investigated demographic, radiographic, or surgery-related parameters as risk factors for poor postoperative fIR (p > 0.05). X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a technology that can non-destructively acquire volumetric images of objects. It is the only commercialized and practical measurement of the inner geometry of objects with micrometer-order accuracy. Microfocus X-ray CT scanners have been widely used in several manufacturing industries. The main applications range from typical observation and inspection to precision measurement and geometry acquisition. They are expanding beyond manufacturing (e.g., science, archeology, and food industries). This review describes the requirements for the use of X-ray CT scanners in the manufacturing industry and their modeling techniques. Recently, there have been growing expectations for the introduction of CT scanners for the high-accuracy acquisition of geometry and inline inspection for manufacturing automation. This requires quality and fast measurement data generation and scan data processing methods. Therefore, this paper presents attempts in the field of modeling for this purpose. In recent years, active research has been conducted on X-ray computed tomography (CT) scans for observing and analyzing the internal structures and defects of products. High-precision is often required for products with primitive shapes, such as X-ray rotating ellipsoidal focusing mirrors, which are used for high-resolution observations. However, the CT reconstruction algorithm can cause blurring and artifacts in the CT volume, thereby complicating the accurate determination of the surface position. To address this issue, we propose an algorithm for high-precision surface extraction from the CT volume of primitive shapes. To accurately determine the surface position on the CT volume influenced by partial volume effects, we introduce three methods for primitive fitting. The first method approximates the boundary between the mirror and air in each cross-section with a line. The second method uses a local cylindrical approximation for the boundary, whereas the third method locally fits the primitive shape to the mirror for each cross-section. By comparing the outcomes of the proposed algorithm with those of conventional surface extraction algorithms, we demonstrate the superior accuracy of our approach and discuss the characteristics of various methods. Overall, the algorithm contributes toward enhancing the accuracy of internal structure analysis and defect detection in industrial components, potentially reducing manufacturing errors and improving product quality. X-ray sources with a photon energy higher than 2140 eV are increasingly being used for routine x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) on laboratory-based instruments. This analytical approach is termed "HAXPES" (hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). This article provides an overview of the current and potential future uses of laboratory-based HAXPES in comparison to routine XPS performed using Al Kα and Mg Kα x-ray sources. The standardization of XPS has occurred over 30 years and many of the procedures and reference works are specific to the use of Al Kα and Mg Kα x-ray sources. In this article, we discuss the translation of standard XPS practices to HAXPES, indicate useful resources for HAXPES users, and highlight areas where there is a need for improved information and guidance. The LM2990-integrated circuit family was among the first low-dropout voltage regulators to use a coupling diode to reduce a quiescent current. In certain conditions, the coupling diode, connected between the output terminal and the driver transistor collector contact, activates to supply the serial power transistor base current from the load. Nonetheless, an indirect characterization of the serial NPN transistor was affected, making it difficult to estimate its forward emitted current gain and a base current as a function of the absorbed total ionizing dose. The original SPICE simulation model had some limitations with generating the faithful simulation of radiation effects in samples supplied with a non-ideal voltage source. Therefore, a novel four-step computer simulation method was developed to specify bias and load conditions when the coupling diode reaction would not negatively affect the characterization of the serial power transistor. The previously reported method for estimating the serial transistor base current could be successfully used for dropout voltages that slightly exceed three equivalent diode voltage drops (that is, 2.4V) at the base-emitter junctions of the output amplifier transistors. A core motivation for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine is to reduce existing healthcare disparities. Yet, recent studies have demonstrated two distinct findings: (1) AI models can show performance biases in underserved populations, and (2) these same models can be directly trained to recognize patient demographics, such as predicting self-reported race from medical images alone. Here, we investigate how these findings may be related, with an end goal of reducing a previously identified underdiagnosis bias. Using two popular chest x-ray datasets, we first demonstrate that technical parameters related to image acquisition and processing influence AI models trained to predict patient race, where these results partly reflect underlying biases in the original clinical datasets. We then find that mitigating the observed differences through a demographics-independent calibration strategy reduces the previously identified bias. While many factors likely contribute to AI bias and demographics prediction, these results highlight the importance of carefully considering data acquisition and processing parameters in AI development and healthcare equity more broadly. Utilizing four archival X-ray data sets taken with the Hard X-ray Detector onboard Suzaku , timing studies were performed on three magnetars, 1E 1841−045 (observed in 2006), SGR 0501+4516 (2008), and 1RXS J170849.0−400910 (2009 and 2010). Their pulsations were reconfirmed, typically in an energy range of 12–50 keV. The 11.783 s pulses of 1E 1841−045 and those of SGR 0501+4516 at 5.762 s were periodically phase modulated, with a long period of |$\approx 23.4$| and |$\approx 16.4$|  ks, respectively. The pulse-phase modulation was also observed, at |$\approx 46.5$|  ks, from two data sets of 1RXS J170849.0−400910. In all these cases, the modulation amplitude was 6 per cent to 16 per cent of the pulse cycle. Including previously confirmed four objects, this characteristic timing behaviour is now detected from seven magnetars in total, and interpreted as a result of free precession of neutron stars that are deformed to an asphericity of |$\sim 10^{-4}$|⁠. Assuming that the deformation is due to magnetic stress, these magnetars are inferred to harbour toroidal magnetic fields of |$B_{\rm t}\sim 10^{16}$|  G. By comparing the estimated |$B_{\rm t}$| of these objects with their poloidal dipole field |$B_{\rm d}$|⁠ , the |$B_{\rm t}/B_{\rm d}$| ratio is found to increase with their characteristic age. Therefore, the toroidal fields of magnetars are likely to last longer than their poloidal fields. This explains the presence of some classes of neutron stars that have relatively weak |$B_{\rm d}$| but are suspected to hide strong |$B_{\rm t}$| inside them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
