An absorptive coding metasurface (ACM) is proposed to achieve radar cross section (RCS) reduction in this paper. In the design progress of the ACM, two different lossy coding elements are proposed at first, which can both be regarded as a composite composed of a two-layer resistive frequency selective surface (RFSS) and a polarization conversion metasurface (PCM). The two-layer RFSS has a certain wave-absorbing property due to ohmic loss. In addition, the PCM can achieve ultra-wideband linear polarization conversion, and the polarization-converted reflected waves in the two coding elements under the same incidence will differ by nearly 180° in phase because the sub-unit-cell structures in them are perpendicular to each other. Thus, based on the two lossy coding elements, the ACM is proposed, which can achieve ultra-wideband RCS reduction due to absorption and phase cancelation. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the RCS of the ACM under normal incidence can be reduced more than 10 dB in the ultra-wide frequency band from 6.9 to 41.2 GHz with a relative bandwidth of 142.6%. Moreover, it has the advantages of polarization-insensitivity and wide incident angle. The authors deal with the problem of the design and manufacture of a high‐resolution FMCW radar for drone detection and classification. The difficulties of the problem are discrete clutter reduction and spurious phase noise mitigation. The discrete clutter is due to the reflected signals from land vehicles, birds etc., while the spurious phase noise is inherent in the radar signal due to the phase‐locked loop component and leakage between the transmitting and receiving paths. Both spurious phase noise and clutter will increase the system noise level and hence reduce the probability of detection of small targets such as drones and induce false alarms on the radar screen. In order to reduce discrete clutter, the authors propose a method to separate a drone from discrete clutter based on the design of the radar system parameters for a drone and its propeller detection, target's Doppler dispersion and moving characteristics. For spur mitigation, a method that focuses on the design of the isolation coefficient between transmitting and receiving paths to decrease the power of spurs below the minimum power requirement at the input of the analogue‐to‐digital converter is introduced. The results were applied by the authors to the development and manufacture of a radar with the given specifications for drone detection and classification. Different laboratory and field tests show that the spurs are mitigated and the drones are separated from discrete clutter with a range and accuracy better than the one recently published. The application and uses of drones in all areas are continuously rising, especially in civilian use cases. This increasing threat requires reliable drone surveillance in urban environments. Radar is the obvious candidate with its ability to detect small objects at range, in all weather conditions. The use of an L‐band networked radar for urban sensing of S‐UAS targets is explored. Small echoes from S‐UAS places a premium on synchronisation, which is the fundamental key for high performance networked radar. The effect of timing errors on the operation of the network radar is investigated theoretically and experimentally, and the processing tools for synchronising data based on the direct signal returns of the transmitter are developed. Also, drone detection using bistatic L‐band staring radar is achieved both in simulation and then in real field trials where the SNR and detection performance are computed and analysed. The updated direct signal synchronisation method for bistatic staring radar is shown to provide comparable SNR and positional accuracy for S‐UAS targets as the monostatic staring radar. Radar technology is critical for subsurface sensing applications since it enables the extraction of surface information remotely without being affected by environmental factors such as illumination and weather conditions. Hence, their usage on drones has become extremely essential as these vehicles need to accumulate data while flying over different and possibly difficult-to-access terrains regardless of visibility conditions. A frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) single input multiple output (SIMO) radar system is developed to provide near real-time radar images onboard. The system is comprised of a transceiver module, specifically designed for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) applications, to produce images in real-time. GPU-based computation is utilized to optimize processing power, while enabling range profiles to be generated and SIMO SAR images to be created during flight. The system can be easily mounted on UAV or multirotor systems. The detection and ranging performance of the system are examined by performing several experiments at the campus. Objects up to 100 metres are successfully detected by the radar system. The system demonstrates excellent ability to generate 2D SIMO SAR images, effectively identifying building and guard-box exteriors that are consistent with images from Google Earth. Tornadoes, as highly destructive weather events, require accurate detection for effective decision‐making. Traditional radar‐based tornado detection algorithms (TDA) face challenges with limited tornado feature extraction capabilities, leading to high false alarm rates and low detection probabilities. This study introduces the Multi‐Task Identification Network (MTI‐Net), leveraging Doppler radar data to enhance tornado recognition. MTI‐Net integrates tornado detection and estimation tasks to acquire comprehensive spatial and locational information. As part of MTI‐Net, we introduce a novel backbone network of Multi‐Head Convolutional Block (MHCB), which incorporates Spatial and Channel Attention Units (SAU and CAU). SAU optimizes local tornado feature extraction, while CAU reduces false alarms by enhancing dependencies among input variables. Experiments demonstrate the superiority of MTI‐Net over TDA, with a decrease in false alarm rates from 0.94 to 0.46 and an increase in hit rates from 0.23 to 0.81, highlighting the effectiveness of MTI‐Net in handling small‐scale tornado events. Information on the spatial distribution of rainfall is required for many applications, including water and flood management. Weather radars can provide quantitative rainfall estimation over an area. Taking the example of an X-band radar installed at Mandhardev in the Western Ghats, we show that radar reflectivity data can have significant bias despite following standard calibration procedures. We report a technique to identify bias in the X-band radar reflectivity factor using collocated disdrometer observations and propose a methodology to correct it. Simultaneous data collected on 83 days during June–September of 2018 are used. Our results show that bias in the radar reflectivity factor reduced from –8.3 to –0.8 dB after correction. The estimated 83-day accumulated rainfall using uncorrected radar reflectivity data is 80% less compared to that of the disdrometer and the difference between the two reduces to 2% with correction. Bias in the estimated rainfall reduces from –30 to –0.7 mm day–1 and the RMSE reduces by 42%. There are days where daily rainfall from the two instruments agrees well with each other, while large differences exist on some days. We show that the sampling issue is one of the major sources of error, and its contribution depends on the nature/type of precipitating clouds, whereas uncertainties in the Z–R relationships account for about 15% difference. Abstract: While software-defined radars can switch their transmitted waveform on the go, they cannot transmit all waveforms at the same time, meaning they must balance the advantages and drawbacks of each configuration. Here, we propose theoretically and demonstrate experimentally the universal radar, which can apply the desired waveform in the post-processing stage after the physical measurement has been performed. This method also allows using a single measurement of a scene to design and test any other radar in complex scenarios without having to take it to the field. The method is based on post-processing the frequency response measured by a synthetically broadband stepped-frequency continuous wave radar, such as a vector network analyzer. An algorithm for overcoming distortions due to moving targets is derived as well. This approach not only provides an ultra-wideband software-only defined radar, but it also enables the acquired data from any measured site to be used for the design and analysis of almost any other future radar system, significantly cutting the time and cost of new developments. Battlefield surveillance radar is usually 2-D radar, which cannot realize target three-dimensional localization, leading to poor resolution for the air target in the elevation dimension. Previous researchers have used the Traditional Height Finder Radar (HFR) or multiple 2-D radar networking to estimate the target three-dimensional location. However, all of them face the problems of high cost, poor real-time performance and high requirement of space–time registration. In this paper, Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) with low cost are introduced into the 2-D radar to realize the target three-dimensional localization. Taking advantage of the wide beam of 2-D radar in the elevation dimension, several Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) carrying RISs are set in the receiving beam to form multiple auxiliary measurement channels. In addition, the traditional 2-D radar measurements combined with the auxiliary channel measurements are used to realize the target three-dimensional localization by solving a nonlinear least square problem with a convex optimization method. For the proposed RIS-assisted target three-dimensional localization problem, the Cramer–Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) is derived to measure the target localization accuracy. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed 3-D localization method, and the influences of the number, the positions and the site errors of the RISs on the localization accuracy are covered. Radar coincidence imaging (RCI) is a high‐resolution radar imaging mode which constructs a temporal spatial stochastic radiation field (TSSRF) and uses the correlation between reference signal and echoes for imaging. The correlation between the reference matrix and the echoes is the main factor affecting the imaging performance. In fact, radar target characteristics cause fluctuations in the radar cross section and variations in the scattering intensity of each resolution element. The latter degrades the correlation between the reference matrix and the echoes, seriously affecting the image reconstruction. This paper designs the waveform based on image entropy under fixed transmitting and receiving arrays. The targets with fluctuating scattering intensity at each resolution element are statistically modelled. With the number of new satellites increasing dramatically, comprehensive space surveillance is becoming increasingly important. Therefore, high-resolution inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging of satellites can provide an in-situ assessment of the satellites. This paper demonstrates that pseudo-noise signals can also be used for satellite imaging, in addition to classical linear frequency-modulated chirp signals. Pseudo-noise transmission signals offer the advantage of very low cross-correlation values. This, for instance, enables the possibility of a system with multiple channels transmitting instantaneously. Furthermore, it can significantly reduce signal interference with other systems operating in the same frequency spectrum, which is of particular interest for high-bandwidth, high-power systems such as satellite imaging radars. A new routine has been introduced to generate a wideband pseudo-noise signal with a peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) similar to that of a chirp signal. This is essential for applications where the transmit signal power budget is sharply limited by the high-power amplifier. For airborne radar, detecting a low–slow–small (LSS) target is a hot and challenging topic, which results from the rapidly increasing number of non-cooperative flying LSS targets becoming of widespread concern, and the low signal-to-clutter ratio (SCR) of LSS targets results in the targets being particularly easily overwhelmed by the clutter. In this paper, a novel light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM)-based LSS target detection algorithm for airborne radar is proposed. The proposed method, based on the current real-time clutter environment of the range cell to be detected, firstly designs a specific real-time space-time LSS target signal repository with special dimensions and structures. Then, the proposed method creatively designs a new fast-built real-time training feature dataset specifically for the LSS target and the current clutter, together with a series of unique data transformations, sample selection, data restructuring, feature extraction, and feature processing. Finally, the proposed method develops a unique machine learning-based LSS target detection classifier model for the designed training dataset, by fully excavating and utilizing the advantages of the ensemble decision trees-based LightGBM. Consequently, the pre-processed data in the range cell of interest are classified using the proposed algorithm, which achieves LSS target detection by evaluating the output results of the designed classifier. Compared with the traditional classical target detection methods, the proposed algorithm is capable of providing markedly superior performance for LSS target detection. With an appropriate computational time, the proposed algorithm attains the highest probability of detecting LSS targets under the low SCR. This paper describes the rainfall and microphysical structure of precipitation associated with Tropical Cyclone Ockhi using polarimetric Doppler weather radar (PDWR) products. The study reports the statistical analysis of precipitation types of tropical cyclone cloud systems over the north Indian Ocean, by combining the observations of the PDWR and disdrometer for the first time. There are few studies that mention initial DWR observations of TC over this low-latitude region below 23.5°N. We tried to further carry out a statistical analysis of precipitating clouds in a cyclone from its depression stage to severe cyclonic stage. This study tries to classify and quantify the contribution of convective and stratiform rain to the total TC rainfall. Precipitating clouds have been classified into convective and stratiform based on reflectivity measurements. The vertical profiles (VPRs) of the radar reflectivity Z and the differential reflectivity ZDR obtained for the stratiform and the convective events are compared. A study of the VPR of the convective events reveals that the Z and ZDR parameters tend to increase as the raindrops descend toward the ground owing to enhanced collision–coalescence processes. The VPR of stratiform rain shows signatures of the bright band (BB). The drop size distribution (DSD) parameters and rainfall rate pertaining to the two different precipitation regimes are estimated from the radar data and have been compared. Automotive radar is one of the key sensors for intelligent driving. Radar image sequences contain abundant spatial and temporal information, enabling target classification. For existing radar spatiotemporal classifiers, multi-view radar images are usually employed to enhance the information of the target and 3D convolution is employed for spatiotemporal feature extraction. These models consume significant hardware resources and are not applicable to real-time applications. In this paper, RadarTCN, a novel lightweight network, is proposed that achieves high-accuracy online target classification using single-view radar image sequences only. In RadarTCN, 2D convolution and 3D-TCN are employed to extract spatiotemporal features sequentially. To reduce data dimensionality and computational complexity, a multi-layer max pooling down-sampling method is designed in a 2D convolution module. Meanwhile, the 3D-TCN module is improved through residual pruning and causal convolution is introduced for leveraging the performance of online target classification. The experimental results demonstrate that RadarTCN can achieve high-precision online target recognition for both range-angle and range-Doppler map sequences. High-performance radar systems are becoming increasingly popular for accurately detecting obstacles in front of unmanned vehicles in fog, snow, rain, night and other scenarios. The use of these systems is gradually expanding, such as indicating empty space and environment detection rather than just detecting and tracking the moving targets. In this paper, based on our high-resolution radar system, a three-dimensional point cloud image algorithm is developed and implemented. An axis translation and compensation algorithm is applied to minimize the point spreading caused by the different mounting positions and the alignment error of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and radar. After applying the algorithm, a point cloud image for a corner reflector target and a parked vehicle is created to directly compare the improved results. A recently developed radar system is mounted on the vehicle and it collects data through actual road driving. Based on this, a three-dimensional point cloud image including an axis translation and compensation algorithm is created. As a results, not only the curbstones of the road but also street trees and walls are well represented. In addition, this point cloud image is made to overlap and align with an open source web browser (QtWeb)-based navigation map image to implement the imaging algorithm and thus determine the location of the vehicle. This application algorithm can be very useful for positioning unmanned vehicles in urban area where GNSS signals cannot be received due to a large number of buildings. Furthermore, sensor fusion, in which a three-dimensional point cloud radar image appears on the camera image, is also implemented. The position alignment of the sensors is realized through intrinsic and extrinsic parameter optimization. This high-performance radar application algorithm is expected to work well for unmanned ground or aerial vehicle route planning and avoidance maneuvers in emergencies regardless of weather conditions, as it can obtain detailed information on space and obstacles not only in the front but also around them. For pulse doppler (PD) radar, two tensor structure-based methods are proposed to improve the clutter suppression performance. One is tensor singular value decomposition (TSVD) and the other is tensor robust principal component analysis (TRPCA). Two algorithms both stack the range-Doppler matrices of multiple coherent processing intervals (CPI) into a tensor structure, which helps make the most of the temporal information across CPIs. TSVD utilizes the strong temporal correlation of ground clutter data to estimate the clutter subspace. Meanwhile, TRPCA exactly separates both low-rank clutter component and sparse target components from the time series range-Doppler tensor structure. Experimental results indicate that compared with conventional matrix-based schemes such as singular value decomposition (SVD) or singular value decomposition (RPCA), the proposed methods have significant advantages in keeping the target echo while suppressing the clutter. The joint transmit and receive beamforming algorithm has been envisioned to optimise the target's signal‐to‐interference‐plus‐noise ratio by co‐designing the transmit and receive beamforming vectors simultaneously. However, the traditional design concepts for this algorithm only consider the monostatic radar system, which may not work as well for the multistatic radar system. The authors present a novel transmit and receive beamforming algorithm for the multistatic radar system that includes a common transmitter and multiple receivers. The transmit beamforming vector can directly influence the output signal‐to‐interference‐plus‐noise ratio of each radar subsystem. To ensure the balanced performance of the subsystems, the authors propose a weighted sum of the signal‐to‐interference‐plus‐noise ratio optimisation problem to co‐design the transmit and receive beamforming. The proposed problem is non‐convex, and the authors construct an iterative algorithm to solve it using semi‐definite relaxation and slack‐variable replacement techniques. By using pre‐determined weights, the output performance of each radar subsystem can be effectively regulated. The simulation results confirm that the proposed algorithm can ensure better output signal‐to‐interference‐plus‐noise ratio for the entire multistatic radar system than the conventional joint transmit and receive beamforming algorithm. To make biologically useful interpretations of the echo signals from an entomological radar (a radar designed and operated to observe insects in flight), it is necessary to relate basic properties of insects (i.e. their mass, size, and form) to their radio-wave scattering characters – e.g. their radar cross-section (RCS) and its variation with aspect or beam polarization. Measurements of RCSs of live or freshly dead specimens in laboratory rigs have played an important role in establishing such relationships, but it is desirable to develop and validate methods employing numerical computation, using electromagnetic calculation software, as a more widely applicable and generalizable alternative. In such computations, the insect is represented by a model with specified size, form, and composition; composition appears as the complex relative permittivity, with both polarizability (real) and loss (imaginary) terms. As a preliminary to investigating how adequately different types of electromagnetic model perform, we have collected and analysed morphometric data on adult, flight-capable specimens of a wide range of insect species, including many known to be migratory and to fly at heights where they would be detectable by radar. Our analyses reveal that appropriate densities for prolate-spheroid models of flying insects are in the range 0.60–0.76 g cm−3, which is about half that measured for air-free samples of the solids and liquids from which insect bodies are formed. From this, appropriate permittivities for the material filling the model are found to be in the range 7–11 (real component) and 2.0–3.5 (imaginary); again, these are much lower than measured values for pure insect-body material. These results enable construction of simple electromagnetic models of insects in which both spatial dimensions and masses are accurate. Computation of model RCSs and their aspect and polarization variations, and comparison of these with laboratory measurements, will be the topic of a follow-up validation study. This paper presents a new technique for estimating the two-dimensional direction of departure (2D-DOD) and direction of arrival (2D-DOA) in bistatic uniform planar array Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radar systems. The method is based on the reduced-dimension (RD) MUSIC algorithm, aiming to achieve improved precision and computational efficiency. Primarily, this pioneering approach efficiently transforms the four-dimensional (4D) estimation problem into two-dimensional (2D) searches, thus reducing the computational complexity typically associated with conventional MUSIC algorithms. Then, exploits the spatial diversity of array response vectors to construct a 4D spatial spectrum function, which is crucial in resolving the complex angular parameters of multiple simultaneous targets. Finally, the objective is to simplify the spatial spectrum to a 2D search within a 4D measurement space to achieve an optimal balance between efficiency and accuracy. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm compared to several existing approaches, demonstrating its robustness in accurately estimating 2D-DOD and 2D-DOA across various scenarios. A large body of evidence suggests that low parasite carriage in Plasmodium falciparum asymptomatic infection is required for the maintenance of malaria immunity. However, the fact that treating such infections has little to no impact on subsequent clinical malaria is rarely noted. In this paper, we review data and argue that low-density parasite carriage in asymptomatic infection may not support host immune processes and that parasites are virtually under the host's immunological radar. We also discuss factors that may be constraining parasitemia in asymptomatic infections from reaching the threshold required to cause clinical symptoms. A thorough understanding of this infectious reservoir is essential for malaria control and eradication because asymptomatic infections contribute significantly to Plasmodium transmission. The X-band phased array radar offers faster scanning speed and higher spatial resolution compared to the S-band radar, making it capable of enhancing tornado monitoring and early warning capabilities. This study analyzed the characteristics and nowcasting signals of a tornado case that occurred on June 16, 2022 in the Guangzhou region. Our findings indicate that the violent contraction of rotation radius and the dramatic increase in rotation speed were important signal characteristics associated with tornado formation. The X-band phased array radar, with its high temporal and spatial resolution, provided an opportunity to capture early warning signals from polarimetric characteristics. The X-band phased array radar demonstrated noteworthy ability to identify apparent tornado vortex signature (TVS) features in a 10-minute lead time, surpassing the capabilities of the CINRAD/SA radar. Additionally, due to its higher scanning frequency, the Xband phased-array radar was capable of consistently identifying TVS with shorter intervals, enabling a more precise tracking of the tornado's path. The application of professional radars, in this case, provides valuable insights for the monitoring of evolutions of severe local storms and even tornadoes and the issuance of early warning signals. This paper presents three refinements in ground-based radar interferometer (GB-radar) measurement for bridge load testing: (1) GB-radar phase jumps were detected for the first time on bridge tower displacement monitoring, and a recovery method is presented to obtain the correct unwrapped value; (2) a precise displacement projection method considering target deformation was exploited, and a case study of the Fifth Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge (FNYRB) GB-radar campaign shows that a centimeter-level compensation can be achieved; (3) a post-construction settlement phenomenon was found during the FNYRB static load tests, characterized by 0.31 mm/min, which accumulated up to 25 mm. In addition, the dynamic monitoring capabilities of GB-radar for the bridge tower and girder were verified, highlighting its potential for bridge structural health monitoring (SHM). Autonomous driving technology is considered the trend of future transportation. Millimeter-wave radar, with its ability for long-distance detection and all-weather operation, is a key sensor for autonomous driving. The development of various technologies in autonomous driving relies on extensive simulation testing, wherein simulating the output of real radar through radar models plays a crucial role. Currently, there are numerous distinctive radar modeling methods. To facilitate the better application and development of radar modeling methods, this study first analyzes the mechanism of radar detection and the interference factors it faces, to clarify the content of modeling and the key factors influencing modeling quality. Then, based on the actual application requirements, key indicators for measuring radar model performance are proposed. Furthermore, a comprehensive introduction is provided to various radar modeling techniques, along with the principles and relevant research progress. The advantages and disadvantages of these modeling methods are evaluated to determine their characteristics. Lastly, considering the development trends of autonomous driving technology, the future direction of radar modeling techniques is analyzed. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) systems are effective sensors for discovering various types of objects buried underground, such as military mines, metal objects, and pieces of underground infrastructures. A GPR system can be manually operated by a human or can be an integral part of a host platform. The host platform may be semi- or fully autonomous and may operate in different environments such as land vehicles or more recently air-borne drones. One challenge for the fully or semi-autonomous host platforms in particular is to find an efficient search procedure that would reduce the operation time and optimize resource utilization. Most of the current approaches are based on pre-defined search patterns which, for large and sparse areas, could mean unnecessary waste of time and resources. In this paper, we introduce a method that combines a coarse and therefore relatively low cost initial search pattern with a Reinforcement Learning (RL) driven efficient navigation path for eventual target detection, by exploiting the signal processing pipeline of the onboard GPR. We illustrate the applicability of the method using a well-known, high fidelity GPR simulation environment and a novel RL framework. Our results suggest that combination of a coarse navigation scheme and an RL-based training procedure based on GPR scan returns can lead to a more efficient target discovery procedure for host platforms. Three-Dimensional Ground Penetrating Radar (3D GPR) detects subsurface targets non-destructively, rapidly, and continuously. The complex environment around urban roads affects the positioning accuracy of 3D GPR. The positioning accuracy directly affects the data quality, as inaccurate positioning can lead to distortion and misalignment of 3D GPR data. This paper proposed a multi-level robust positioning method to improve the positioning accuracy of 3D GPR in dense urban areas in order to obtain more accurate underground data. In environments with good GNSS signals, fast and high-precision positioning can be achieved based on GNSS data using differential GNSS technology; in scenes with weak GNSS signals, high-precision positioning of subsurface data can be achieved by using GNSS and IMU as well as using GNSS/INS tightly coupled solution technology; in scenes with no GNSS signals, SLAM technology is used for positioning based on INS data and 3D point cloud data. In summary, this method ensures a positioning accuracy of 3D GPR better than 10 cm and high-quality 3D images of underground urban roads in any environment. In near-surface surveys, shallow-seismic and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) full-waveform inversions (FWIs) have received increasing attention because of their ability to reconstruct high-resolution subsurface models. However, they have different sensitivities to the same targets and thus may yield conflicting geophysical parameter models. To solve this issue, we have developed an indirect joint petrophysical inversion (JPI) integrating shallow-seismic and multi-offset GPR data. These data are used to reconstruct porosity and saturation whereby we use only strong sensitivities between petrophysical and geophysical parameters. To promote its field application, we proposed an input strategy to avoid measuring rock matrix parameters and make indirect JPI more robust. We apply indirect JPI to the field data acquired in Rheinstetten, Germany and find that it reveals the mechanical, electrical and petrophysical properties more reliably than individual inversions. The reconstructed models are assessed by direct-push technology, borehole sample measurements and migrated GPR image. Indirect JPI can fit seismic and GPR observed data simultaneously and provide consistent multiparameter models, which are hard to achieve by FWIs and individual petrophysical inversions. We also find that the method is robust when there are uncertainties in petrophysical a priori information. A THz radar, with its wide bandwidth, is capable of high‐resolution imaging down to the centimeter scale. In this study, a THz radar is applied to detect hydrometeors generated in a spray chamber. The observed backscattering signals show fluctuations at centimeter scales, indicating various hydrometeor distribution patterns along the radar beam. A co‐located High‐Speed Imaging (HSI) sensor is used to measure the Drop Size Distributions (DSD) in the spray chamber. The radar sampling beam is well aligned with the HSI probes, allowing an objective comparison between the remote sensing and in situ observations. In this study, the observed radar power is compared with the power estimated from the HSI measurements. Results show great consistency, with power difference smaller than 0.5 dB. This study demonstrates the feasibility and great potential of using a THz radar for ultra‐high‐resolution observations of clouds in a laboratory facility, and in the real atmosphere. Seabirds interact with fishing vessels to consume fishing discards and baits, sometimes resulting in incidental capture (bycatch) and the death of the bird, which has clear conservation implications. To understand seabird–fishery interactions at large spatiotemporal scales, researchers are increasing their use of simultaneous seabird and fishing vessel tracking. However, vessel tracking data can contain gaps due to technical problems, illicit manipulation, or lack of adoption of tracking monitoring systems. These gaps might lead to underestimating the fishing effort and bycatch rates and jeopardize the effectiveness of marine conservation. We deployed bird‐borne radar detector tags capable of recording radar signals from vessels. We placed tags on 88 shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea, Calonectris borealis, and Calonectris edwardsii) that forage in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea and the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem. We modeled vessel radar detections registered by the tags in relation to gridded automatic identification system (AIS) vessel tracking data to examine the spatiotemporal dynamics of seabird–vessel interactions and identify unreported fishing activity areas. Our models showed a moderate fit (area under the curve >0.7) to vessel tracking data, indicating a strong association of shearwaters to fishing vessels in major fishing grounds. Although in high‐marine‐traffic regions, radar detections were also driven by nonfishing vessels. The tags registered the presence of potential unregulated and unreported fishing vessels in West African waters, where merchant shipping is unusual but fishing activity is intense. Overall, bird‐borne radar detectors showed areas and periods when the association of seabirds with legal and illegal fishing vessels was high. With the continuous development of automotive intelligence, vehicle occupant detection technology has received increasing attention. Despite various types of research in this field, a simple, reliable, and highly private detection method is lacking. This paper proposes a method for vehicle occupant detection using millimeter-wave radar. Specifically, the paper outlines the system design for vehicle occupant detection using millimeter-wave radar. By collecting the raw signals of FMCW radar and applying Range-FFT and DoA estimation algorithms, a range–azimuth heatmap was generated, visually depicting the current status of people inside the vehicle. Furthermore, utilizing the collected range–azimuth heatmap of passengers, this paper integrates the Faster R-CNN deep learning networks with radar signal processing to identify passenger information. Finally, to test the performance of the detection method proposed in this article, an experimental verification was conducted in a car and the results were compared with those of traditional machine learning algorithms. Mini–unmanned aerial vehicles (mini-UAVs) are emerging as a promising platform for through-wall radar to sense the enclosed space in cities, especially high-rise buildings, due to their excellent maneuverability. However, due to unavoidable environmental interference such as airflow, mini-UAVs are prone to trajectory deviation thus degrading their sensing accuracy. Most of the existing approaches model the impact of trajectory deviation into a polynomial phase error on the received signal, which cannot fit the space-variant motion error well. Moreover, the large trajectory deviations of UAVs introduce the unavoidable envelope error. This article proposes an autofocusing algorithm based on the back projection (BP) image, which directly estimates the trajectory deviations between the actual and measured track. Thus, the problem of the 2D space variability of the motion error can be circumvented. The proposed method mainly consists of two steps. First, we estimate the trajectory deviation in the line-of-sight (LOS) direction by exploring the underlying linear property of the wall embedded in the BP imaging result. Then, the estimated trajectory deviation in the LOS direction is compensated for to obtain an updated BP image, followed by a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) approach to estimate the trajectory deviation along the track through focusing targets behind the wall. Simulations and practical experiments show that the proposed algorithm can accurately estimate the serious trajectory deviations larger than the range resolution, improving the sensing robustness of UAV-borne through-wall radar greatly. In the current complex situations of electronic intelligence (ELINT), the authors present a radar emitter structure (RES) identification method based on deep learning at a new level to address the issue of incomplete cognitive information. Firstly, due to the fact that existing simulation data cannot fully reflect the structure features of the entire radar emitter, the structure feature‐level RES model is built using direct digital synthesiser (DDS) technology and radio frequency (RF) simulation platform. Afterwards, considering that the structure features are reflected in the frequency domain, a stacked frequency sparse auto encoder (sFSAE) network is constructed by adding a constraint term in frequency domain to the loss function of sparse auto encoder (SAE). Using deep learning to extract structure features with constraints in different domains is instructive for feature extraction techniques under variable operating parameters. Finally, the extracted structure features are input into the Softmax classifier to perform the identification from the radar signal to the RES. The experimental results show that the proposed method has high generalisation ability and robustness under different modulation types, different operating parameters and different signal to noise ratio (SNR). Within the context of a smart home, detecting the operating status of appliances in the environment plays a pivotal role, estimating power consumption, issuing overuse reminders, and identifying faults. The traditional contact-based approaches require equipment updates such as incorporating smart sockets or high-precision electric meters. Non-constant approaches involve the use of technologies like laser and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) radar. The former can only monitor one appliance at a time, and the latter is unable to detect appliances with extremely tiny vibrations and tends to be susceptible to interference from human activities. To address these challenges, we introduce HomeOSD, an advanced appliance status-detection system that uses mmWave radar. This innovative solution simultaneously tracks multiple appliances without human activity interference by measuring their extremely tiny vibrations. To reduce interference from other moving objects, like people, we introduce a Vibration-Intensity Metric based on periodic signal characteristics. We present the Adaptive Weighted Minimum Distance Classifier (AWMDC) to counteract appliance vibration fluctuations. Finally, we develop a system using a common mmWave radar and carry out real-world experiments to evaluate HomeOSD's performance. Detection of space objects is a key component of space situational awareness, which could help prevent and minimise space collisions. While there have been lots of radar systems designed to detect space objects, few of them have dealt with long baseline distributed bistatic pairs. The authors focus on the feasibility of long baseline bistatic radars, which can be extended for the multistatic case; and the performance of the multistatic system for a target at different altitudes assuming one transmitter over three different scenarios: a cluster of receivers, receivers spread throughout the world and the combination of the two previous cases. To analyse the performance the multiple‐input‐multiple‐output (MIMO) ambiguity function (AF) will be employed. The results of the MIMO AF show how the fusion of different bistatic pairs improves the detection capabilities. Long baseline bistatic radar systems herald enhanced sensitivity and metric accuracy for space objects in geosynchronous orbits and beyond. Radio telescopes are ideal participants in such a system; in particular, they often feature large apertures with low‐noise temperatures and have stable, synchronised clocks. Pairing radio telescopes with high‐power radars creates new methodologies for Space Domain Awareness. This paper describes long baseline bistatic measurements using the Millstone Hill Radar in the USA, the Tracking and Imaging Radar in Germany, multiple receivers of the enhanced multi‐element remotely linked interferometer network array in the United Kingdom, and the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope in the Netherlands. The authors, a Research Task Group formed by the NATO Science and Technology Organisation Sensors and Electronic Technology Panel (SET‐293), performed novel bistatic and monostatic radar imaging experiments with real on‐orbit tumbling rocket bodies. These experiments on tumbling objects at near‐geosynchronous orbits highlight successful demonstrations of advanced bistatic Doppler characterisation across diverse imaging geometries. The presented paper is further focused on the presentation and subsequent assessment of utilising a proposed Neural Network (NN) with simple architecture in the role of a signal preprocessing algorithm for the Constant False Alarm Rate detector and the fixed threshold detector applied on a Range‐Doppler (RD) map with the aim of radar clutter impact reduction and minimisation of processing time. Based on a comparison of all tested algorithm results, it is possible to state that utilising the proposed NN with simple architecture led to reducing the impact of radar clutter when detecting radar targets on RD maps created from provided datasets. In the current biodiversity crisis, populations of many species have alarmingly declined, and insects are no exception to this general trend. Biodiversity monitoring has become an essential asset to detect biodiversity change but remains patchy and challenging for organisms that are small, inconspicuous or make (nocturnal) long-distance movements. Radars are powerful remote-sensing tools that can provide detailed information on intensity, timing, altitude and spatial scale of aerial movements and might therefore be particularly suited for monitoring aerial insects and their movements. Importantly, they can contribute to several essential biodiversity variables (EBVs) within a harmonized observation system. We review existing research using small-scale biological and weather surveillance radars for insect monitoring and outline how the derived measures and quantities can contribute to the EBVs 'species population', 'species traits', 'community composition' and 'ecosystem function'. Furthermore, we synthesize how ongoing and future methodological, analytical and technological advancements will greatly expand the use of radar for insect biodiversity monitoring and beyond. Owing to their long-term and regional-to-large-scale deployment, radar-based approaches can be a powerful asset in the biodiversity monitoring toolbox whose potential has yet to be fully tapped. In array signal processing, the mutual coupling among physical sensors can inevitably affect the estimation of the direction of arrival (DOA). Despite the fact that multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) radar can provide greater degrees of freedom (DOFs), the influence of mutual coupling is largely overlooked in many current MIMO radar designs. To tackle this issue, we propose the utilization of a generalized nested array (GNA) in transmitter array and we introduce an expansion factor into the nested array in the receiver array. Thereby, a novel GNA-MIMO radar is put forward. The proposed MIMO radar offers O (N 4) consecutive DOFs with N sensors and avoids the adverse effects of high mutual coupling caused by closely located sensors. Furthermore, we derive the closed-form expressions for the position of physical sensors and the attainable consecutive DOFs of the proposed MIMO radar. Through simulation experiments, we demonstrate the superior accuracy of the proposed MIMO configuration in DOA estimation and angle resolution under the condition of mutual coupling effect. This study focuses on the improvement of the tracking performance of space observation radar systems. Coherent radar systems usually provide an observation vector including four observables (range, range rate, azimuth, elevation) measured at a given epoch. Moreover, for some coherent radars, such as the TIRA system, it is possible to determine an additional parameter, the range rate, which is extracted from the collected complex amplitude. The tracking performance can be improved by increasing the observation parameter accuracy. The influence of each parameter on the overall tracking performance can be assessed by conducting a sensitivity analysis. The investigation shows that the best way to increase the accuracy of the state vector is by improving the angle estimates. The TIRA system is equipped with a tracking radar and an imaging radar. Heart rate (HR) and respiration rate (RR) play an important role in the study of complex behaviors and their physiological correlations in non-human primates (NHPs). However, collecting HR and RR information is often challenging, involving either invasive implants or tedious behavioral training, and there are currently few established simple and non-invasive techniques for HR and RR measurement in NHPs owing to their stress response or indocility. In this study, we employed a frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar to design a novel contactless HR and RR monitoring system. The designed system can estimate HR and RR in real time by placing the FMCW radar on the cage and facing the chest of both awake and anesthetized macaques, the NHP investigated in this study. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms existing methods, with averaged absolute errors between the reference monitor and radar estimates of 0.77 beats per minute (bpm) and 1.29 respirations per minute (rpm) for HR and RR, respectively. In summary, we believe that the proposed non-invasive and contactless estimation method could be generalized as a HR and RR monitoring tool for NHPs. In addressing the challenges of quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) using weather radar, the importance of enhancing the rainfall estimates for applications such as flash flood forecasting and hydropower generation management is recognized. This study employed dual-polarization weather radar data to refine the traditional Z–R relationship, which often needs higher accuracy in areas with complex meteorological phenomena. Utilizing tree-based machine learning algorithms, such as random forest and gradient boosting, this research analyzed polarimetric variables to capture the intricate patterns within the Z–R relationship. The results highlight machine learning's potential to improve the precision of precipitation estimation, especially under challenging weather conditions. In the multi-target scenarios, we consider the problem of constant false alarm rate (CFAR) target detection. For the conventional CFAR algorithms, the multi-target detection performance is mainly limited by the interference target tolerance within the reference window. In this paper, we propose a local ordered statistic CFAR (OS-CFAR) target detector based on compressed sensing (CS) radar system to address the degradation of detection performance in multi-target scenarios. With the analog-information-converter (AIC), the radar intermediate frequency (IF) signal is compressively sampled into discrete linear measurements. At each detection stage, multiple signal components are generated by correlation tests between the sensing matrix and linear measurements. By support set merge and proxy pruning, the signal components with the largest energy are retained. These components are the echoes reflected from the targets. Since target components are output in decreasing order of correlation, the proposed detector only requires a local OS-CFAR decision in the interval where the least correlated target is located, rather than traversing the entire interval. By continuously updating the detection stage, all targets that satisfy the false alarm rate requirement can be screened out. Two‐dimensional direction‐of‐arrival (DoA) estimation in azimuth and elevation via radar systems equipped with uniform rectangular arrays (URAs) will play an important role in various application areas—most distinctively in future urban air mobility settings with unmanned aerial vehicles. A key factor is the fast and reliable provision of target detections in terms of range and DoA for safe autonomous operation of the vehicle using on‐board antenna arrays with compact installation size. The authors present a technique for improving the performance of DoA estimation using compressive sensing in conjunction with multiple‐input multiple‐output arrays with electronically steered beams in the transmit direction. The simulation study investigates the impact of different design considerations on radar signal processing performance. Background: Wire‐guided localization has been the mainstay of localization techniques for non‐palpable breast and axillary lesions prior to excision. Evidence is still growing for relatively newer localization technologies. This study evaluated the efficacy of the wireless localization technology, SCOUT®, for both breast and axillary surgery. Methods: Data were extracted from a prospective database (2021–2023) of consecutive patients undergoing wide local excision, excisional biopsy, targeted axillary dissection, or axillary lymph node dissection with SCOUT at a high‐volume tertiary centre. Rates of successful reflector placement, intraoperative lesion localization, and reflector retrieval were evaluated. A survey of surgeon‐reported ease of lesion localization and reflector retrieval was also evaluated. Clinical trial registration: ACTRN386751. Results: One‐hundred‐ninety‐five reflectors were deployed in 172 patients. Median interval between deployment and surgery was 3 days (range 1–20) and mean distance from reflector to lesion was 3.2 mm (standard deviation, SD 3.1). Rate of successful localization and reflector retrieval was 100% for both breast and axillary procedures. Mean operating time was 65.8 min (SD 33). None of the reflectors migrated. No reflector deployment or localization‐related complications occurred. Ninety‐eight percent of surgeons were satisfied with ease of localization for the first half of cases. Conclusion: SCOUT is an accurate and reliable method to localize and excise both breast and axillary lesions, and it may overcome some of the limitations of wire‐guided localization. This study explored an indoor system for tracking multiple humans and detecting falls, employing three Millimeter-Wave radars from Texas Instruments. Compared to wearables and camera methods, Millimeter-Wave radar is not plagued by mobility inconveniences, lighting conditions, or privacy issues. We conducted an initial evaluation of radar characteristics, covering aspects such as interference between radars and coverage area. Then, we established a real-time framework to integrate signals received from these radars, allowing us to track the position and body status of human targets non-intrusively. Additionally, we introduced innovative strategies, including dynamic Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) clustering based on signal SNR levels, a probability matrix for enhanced target tracking, target status prediction for fall detection, and a feedback loop for noise reduction. We conducted an extensive evaluation using over 300 min of data, which equated to approximately 360,000 frames. Our prototype system exhibited a remarkable performance, achieving a precision of 98.9% for tracking a single target and 96.5% and 94.0% for tracking two and three targets in human-tracking scenarios, respectively. Moreover, in the field of human fall detection, the system demonstrates a high accuracy rate of 96.3%, underscoring its effectiveness in distinguishing falls from other statuses. As the variety of space targets expands, two-dimensional (2D) ISAR images prove insufficient for target recognition, necessitating the extraction of three-dimensional (3D) information. The 3D geometry reconstruction method utilizing energy accumulation of ISAR image sequence (ISEA) facilitates superior reconstruction while circumventing the laborious steps associated with factorization methods. Nevertheless, ISEA's neglect of valid information necessitates a high quantity of images and elongated operation times. This paper introduces a partitioned parallel 3D reconstruction method utilizing sorted-energy semi-accumulation with ISAR image sequences (PP-ISEA) to address these limitations. The PP-ISEA innovatively incorporates a two-step search pattern—coarse and fine—that enhances search efficiency and conserves computational resources. It introduces a novel objective function 'sorted-energy semi-accumulation' to discern genuine scatterers from spurious ones and establishes a redundant point exclusion module. Experiments on the scatterer model and simulated electromagnetic model demonstrate that the PP-ISEA reduces the minimum image requirement from ten to four for high-quality scatterer model reconstruction, thereby offering superior reconstruction quality in less time. Frequency agility refers to the rapid variation of the carrier frequency of adjacent pulses, which is an effective radar active antijamming method against frequency spot jamming. Variation patterns of traditional pseudo-random frequency hopping methods are susceptible to analysis and decryption, rendering them ineffective against increasingly sophisticated jamming strategies. Although existing reinforcement learning-based methods can adaptively optimize frequency hopping strategies, they are limited in adapting to the diversity and dynamics of jamming strategies, resulting in poor performance in the face of complex unknown jamming strategies. This paper proposes an AK-MADDPG (Adaptive K-th order history-based Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient) method for designing frequency hopping strategies in frequency agile radar. Signal pulses within a coherent processing interval are treated as agents, learning to optimize their hopping strategies in the case of unknown jamming strategies. Agents dynamically adjust their carrier frequencies to evade jamming and collaborate with others to enhance antijamming efficacy. This approach exploits cooperative relationships among the pulses, providing additional information for optimized frequency hopping strategies. In addition, an adaptive K-th order history method has been introduced into the algorithm to capture long-term dependencies in sequential data. Rainbands are essential to tropical cyclones (TCs), significantly affecting TC structure and intensity change. High‐resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery can capture the footprints of rainbands caused by rain‐induced sea surface roughness modification. Using 464 SAR TC images, we investigated the rainband‐occurrence probability of TCs under different hemispheres, local times (LTs), intensities, and ocean basins. Results show that the rainband‐occurrence probability is highest in the downshear‐left quadrant for Northern Hemisphere TCs (downshear‐right quadrant for Southern Hemisphere TCs). For Northern Hemisphere TCs, the rainband‐occurrence probability is overall higher in the early morning (LT), and the peak region of rainband‐occurrence probability appears farther from the TC center in the evening (LT). Compared with weak TCs, the rainband‐occurrence probability becomes higher for strong TCs in the Northern Hemisphere. Furthermore, TCs have a higher rainband‐occurrence probability in the Northwest Pacific than in the North Atlantic and Northeast Pacific. The data were mapped to grid nodes spaced at 0.027 times the radius of max winds in a coordinate system with the origin at the TC center and the y‐axis in the vertical wind shear direction. Then, the data were composited to estimate and further investigate the rainband‐occurrence probability of TCs under different hemispheres, local times (LTs), intensities, and ocean basins. Results show that the rainband‐occurrence probability is highest in the downshear‐left quadrant for Northern Hemisphere TCs (downshear‐right quadrant for Southern Hemisphere TCs). This paper addresses the problem of weak maneuvering target detection in the space-based bistatic radar system through long-time coherent integration (LTCI). The space-based bistatic radar is vulnerable to the high-order range migration (RM) and Doppler frequency migration (DFM), since the target, the receiver and the transmitter all can play fast movement independently. To correct high- order RM and DFM, this usually involves joint high-dimensional parameter searching, incurring a large computational burden. In our previous work, a dual-scale (DS) decomposition of motion parameters was proposed, in which the optimal GRFT is conditionally decoupled into two cascade procedures called the modified generalized inverse Fourier transform (GIFT) and generalized Fourier transform (GFT), resulting in the DS-GRFT detector. However, even if the DS-GRFT detector preserves the superior performance and dramatically decreases the complexity, high-dimensional searching is still required. In this paper, by analyzing the structure of the DS-GRFT detector, we further designed a conditioned cubic phase function (CCPF) tailored to the range–slow-time signal after GIFT, breaking the joint high-dimensional searching into independent one-dimensional searching. Then, by connecting the proposed CCPF with the GIFT, we achieved a new LTCI detector called the DS-GIFT-CCPF detector, which obtained a significant computational cost reduction with acceptable performance loss, as demonstrated in numerical experiments. Spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is an advanced microwave imaging technology that provides all-weather and all-day target information. However, as spaceborne SAR resolution improves, traditional echo signal models based on airborne SAR design become inadequate due to the curved orbit, Earth rotation, and increased propagation distance. In this study, we propose an accurate range model for high-resolution spaceborne SAR by analyzing motion trajectory and Doppler parameters from the perspective of the space geometry of spaceborne SAR. We evaluate the accuracy of existing range models and propose an advanced equivalent squint range model (AESRM) that accurately fits the actual range history and compensates for high-order term errors by introducing third-order and fourth-order error terms while maintaining the simplicity of the traditional model. The proposed AESRM's concise two-dimensional frequency spectrum form facilitates the design of imaging algorithms. Point target simulations confirm the effectiveness of the proposed AESRM, demonstrating significant improvements in fitting accuracy for range histories characterized by nonlinear trajectories. Quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) by radar observation data is a crucial aspect of meteorological forecasting operations. Accurate QPE plays a significant role in mitigating the impact of severe convective weather. Traditional QPE methods mainly employ an exponential Z–R relationship to map the radar reflectivity to precipitation intensity on a point-to-point basis. However, this isolated point-to-point transformation lacks an effective representation of convective systems. Deep learning-based methods can learn the evolution patterns of convective systems from rich historical data. However, current models often rely on 2 km-height CAPPI images, which struggle to capture the complex vertical motions within convective systems. To address this, we propose a novel QPE model: combining the classic extrapolation model ConvLSTM with Unet for an encoder-decoder module assembly. Meanwhile, we utilize three-dimensional radar echo images as inputs and introduce the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) to guide the model to focus on individual cells most likely to trigger intense precipitation, which is symmetrically built on both channel and spatial attention modules. We also employ asymmetry in training using weighted mean squared error to make the model concentrate more on heavy precipitation events which are prone to severe disasters. We conduct experiments using radar data from North China and Eastern China. For precipitation above 1 mm, the proposed model achieves 0.6769 and 0.7910 for CSI and HSS, respectively. The results indicate that compared to other methods, our model significantly enhances precipitation prediction accuracy, with a more pronounced improvement in forecasting accuracy for heavy precipitation events. In image processing, image segmentation is the process of partitioning a digital image into multiple image segments. Among state‐of‐the‐art methods, Markov random fields can be used to model dependencies between pixels and achieve a segmentation by minimising an associated cost function. Currently, finding the optimal set of segments for a given image modelled as a Markov random fields appears to be NP‐hard. The authors aim to take advantage of the exponential scalability of quantum computing to speed up the segmentation of synthetic aperture radar images. For that purpose, the authors propose a hybrid quantum annealing classical optimisation expectation maximisation algorithm to obtain optimal sets of segments. After proposing suitable formulations, the authors discuss the performances and the scalability of authors' approach on the D‐Wave quantum computer. The authors also propose a short study of optimal computation parameters to enlighten the limits and potential of the adiabatic quantum computation to solve large instances of combinatorial optimisation problems.
