With the aggregation of renewable energy in the power system, the uncertainty caused by the renewable energy affects the planning and operation of power systems. Meanwhile, the existing planning models fail to consider renewable energy uncertainty methods, specifically concerning renewable energy confidence and future possible scenarios; thus, a confidence-based scenario cluster method is presented. A novel generator, network, load, and energy storage (GNLS) co-planning model is proposed in the paper. First, a confidence-based scenario cluster is built, which can reflect uncertainties by clustering and analyzing wind, solar, and load. Second, the proposed model focuses on load and energy storage co-planning, and in addition, relevant flexible indices are used to assess the model. Finally, the GNLS co-planning model is built as a bi-level stochastic model on continuous time scales. The model is solved using the Benders decomposition algorithm. The method in this paper is validated using an IEEE RTS 24-bus and a real test system in China to demonstrate the reduction in renewable energy curtailment and optimization of economic factors in power system planning. The consumption of coal in winter heating period in northern China is large, and the combustion generates greenhouse gases that pollute the environment. At the same time, wind abandonment is widespread in northern China, causing waste of energy. In order to solve these problems, this paper proposes to apply clean energy heating and waste wind power generation for heating, and build a multi‐objective optimal dispatching model under the goal of considering customer satisfaction and operating costs. Finally, taking a region in the north of China as an example, the improved genetic algorithm is used to solve the model, the improved genetic algorithm ensures the survival rate of excellent genes, which is more efficient than the traditional genetic algorithm. With the increasing use of renewable energy sources and decentralized power systems, certain challenges have emerged in meeting consumers' electrical energy demands. The intermittent nature of renewable energy generation means that it cannot always align with consumers' needs, resulting in periods of excess energy production when it is not required. To bridge this gap between production and consumption, energy storage systems are necessary. This paper defines the work of an isolated microgrid, which consists of renewable sources (wind and PV) for energy production, households with electric vehicles as consumers, and a combined storage system. This storage system is made from batteries, hydrogen storage, and a control system that defines the best use of the storage. Stored energy is utilized through fuel cells to generate electricity for consumption when renewable sources cannot meet the demand. This paper presents the principles of electrolysis and models of individual elements within such a system, as well as the definition and principle of control of the system functionality based on rules and conditions. The proposed control system aims to increase the energy storage lifecycle by deciding when and how to utilize which type of storage and define a self-sufficient microgrid based on renewable sources of production. An economic analysis of the storage part of the system was carried out in which the levelized cost of energy stored and the NPC of the storage systems are calculated. A simulation of the system's operation is conducted using one-hour measurements of wind turbines, solar panels, and household consumption in Serbia. The modern world is moving towards a zero-emission economy; therefore, various actions are being taken to reduce the share of fossil fuels in energy production. The article examines the potential for the continued expansion of photovoltaic farms, with a special emphasis on farms utilising east–west panel orientation. The east–west orientation is an innovative solution with many advantages over the traditional north–south arrangement. The paper also makes a detailed assessment of the photovoltaic farm environment by applying two analyses based on the following factors: Political, Economic, Social, and Technological (PEST) and Demographic, Economic, Environmental, Political, Legal, Informational, Social, and Technological (DEEPLIST) factors. This is followed by an insightful, comprehensive review of the most important factors that contribute to the efficiency of photovoltaic installations, namely site conditions, existing infrastructure, and ability to connect to the electricity grid. The paper also devotes space to an analysis of daily energy price changes that affect the economic efficiency of the installation and discusses the potential for energy storage in the context of photovoltaic farms. Developing photovoltaic (PV) and wind power is one of the most efficient approaches to reduce carbon emissions. Accumulating the PV and wind energy resources at different geographical locations can minimize total power output variance as injected into the power systems. To some extent, a low degree of the variance amplitude of the renewable resources can reduce the requirement of in-depth regulation and dispatch for the fossil fuel-based thermal power plants. Such an issue can alternatively reduce carbon emissions. Thus, the correlation problem by minimizing the variance of total PV and wind power plays a vital role in power system planning and operation. However, the synergistic effect of power output correlation is mainly considered on the generation side, and it is often neglected for the correlation relationship between the power grid components. To address this problem, this paper proposes a correlation coefficient analysis method for the power grid, which can quantify the relationship between energy storage and the probabilistic power flow (PPF) of the grid. Subsequently, to accelerate the mapping efficiency of power correlation coefficients, a novel deep neural network (DNN) optimized by multi-task learning and attention mechanism (MA-DNN) is developed to predict power flow fluctuations. Finally, the simulation results show that in IEEE 9-bus and IEEE14-bus systems, the strong correlation grouping percentage between the power correlation coefficients and power flow fluctuations reached 92% and 51%, respectively. The percentages of groups indicating weak correlation are 4% and 38%. In the modified IEEE 23-bus system, the computational accuracy of MA-DNN is improved by 37.35% compared to the PPF based on Latin hypercube sampling. Additionally, the MA-DNN regression prediction model exhibits a substantial improvement in assessing power flow fluctuations in the power grid, achieving a speed enhancement of 758.85 times compared to the conventional probability power flow algorithms. A comprehensive review of uncertainties in power systems, covering modeling, impact, and mitigation, is essential to understand and manage the challenges faced by the electric grid. Uncertainties in power systems can arise from various sources and can have significant implications for grid reliability, stability, and economic efficiency. Australia, susceptible to extreme weather such as wildfires and heavy rainfall, faces vulnerabilities in its power network assets. The decentralized distribution of population centers poses economic challenges in supplying power to remote areas, which is a crucial consideration for the emerging technologies emphasized in this paper. In addition, the evolution of modern power grids, facilitated by deploying the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), has also brought new challenges to the system due to the risk of cyber-attacks via communication links. However, the existing literature lacks a comprehensive review and analysis of uncertainties in modern power systems, encompassing uncertainties related to weather events, cyber-attacks, and asset management, as well as the advantages and limitations of various mitigation approaches. To fill this void, this review covers a broad spectrum of uncertainties considering their impacts on the power system and explores conventional robust control as well as modern probabilistic and data-driven approaches for modeling and correlating the uncertainty events to the state of the grid for optimal decision making. This article also investigates the development of robust and scenario-based operations, control technologies for microgrids (MGs) and energy storage systems (ESSs), and demand-side frequency control ancillary service (D-FCAS) and reserve provision for frequency regulation to ensure a design of uncertainty-tolerance power system. This review delves into the trade-offs linked with the implementation of mitigation strategies, such as reliability, computational speed, and economic efficiency. Renewable energy sources are essential for mitigating the greenhouse effect and supplying energy to resource-scarce regions. However, their intermittent nature necessitates efficient storage solutions to enhance system efficiency and manage energy costs. This paper investigates renewable and clean storage systems, specifically examining the storage of electricity generated from renewable sources using hydropower plants and hydrogen, both of which are highly efficient and promising for future energy production and storage. The study utilizes extensive literature data to analyze the impact of various parameters on the cost per kWh of electricity production in hybrid renewable systems incorporating hydropower and hydrogen storage plants. Results indicate that these hybrid systems can store electricity efficiently and cost-effectively, with production costs ranging from 0.126 to 0.3 $/kWh for renewable-hydropower systems and 0.118 to 0.42 $/kWh for renewable-hydrogen systems, with expected cost reductions over the next decade due to technological advancements and increased market adoption. The novelty of this study lies in its comprehensive comparison of hybrid renewable systems integrating hydropower and hydrogen storage, providing detailed cost analysis and future projections. Efficient highway lighting is crucial for ensuring road safety and reducing energy consumption and costs. Traditional highway lighting systems rely on timers or simple photosensors, leading to inefficient operation by illuminating lights when not needed or failing to adjust to changing conditions. Substantial breakthroughs in renewable energy have been made in order to reduce energy-induced climate change. Yet our reliance on these sources is still insufficient. The UK's objective of attaining net-zero emissions by 2050 is highly dependent on shifting to an electrical system that exclusively relies on zero-carbon generation. This entails integrating renewable energy sources, along with other low-carbon sources such as nuclear power, into the energy mix. However, the primary barrier to incorporating additional renewable energy sources into the grid is their intermittent and volatile nature. Therefore, there is a pressing need to stabilise the generation of renewables and manage this volatility by enhancing the balancing mechanism between microgrids and the national grid. This paper examines previous research on microgrids and smart grids, specifically from a supply chain perspective. It has been observed that the majority of the current literature focuses on documenting selfish microgrids that strive to optimise performance at the microgrid level. However, there is an alternative approach that draws inspiration from the field of supply chain management. The weather-dependent uncertainty of wind and solar power generation presents a challenge to the balancing of power generation and demand in highly renewable electricity systems. Battery energy storage can provide flexibility to firm up the variability of renewables and to respond to the increased load demand under decarbonization scenarios. This paper explores how the battery energy storage capacity requirement for compressed-air energy storage (CAES) will grow as the load demand increases. Here we used an idealized lowest-cost optimization model to study the response of highly renewable electricity systems to the increasing load demand of California under deep decarbonization. Results show that providing bulk CAES to the zero-emission power system offers substantial benefits, but it cannot fully compensate for the 100% variability of highly renewable power systems. The capacity requirement of CAES increases by ≤33.3% with a 1.5 times increase in the load demand and by ≤50% with a two-times increase in the load demand. In this analysis, a zero-emission electricity system operating at current costs becomes more cost-effective when there is firm power generation. The least competitive nuclear option plays this role and reduces system costs by 16.4%, curtails the annual main node by 36.8%, and decreases the CAES capacity requirements by ≤80.7% in the case of a double-load demand. While CAES has potential in addressing renewable variability, its widespread deployment is constrained by geographical, societal, and economic factors. Therefore, if California is aiming for an energy system that is reliant on wind and solar power, then an additional dispatchable power source other than CAES or similar load flexibility is necessary. The output of renewable energy sources is characterized by random fluctuations, and considering scenarios with a stochastic renewable energy output is of great significance for energy storage planning. Existing scenario generation methods based on random sampling fail to account for the volatility and temporal characteristics of renewable energy output. To enhance photovoltaic (PV) absorption capacity and reduce the cost of planning distributed PV and energy storage systems, a scenario-driven optimization configuration strategy for energy storage in high-proportion renewable energy power systems is proposed, incorporating demand-side response and bidirectional dynamic reconfiguration strategies into the planning model. Firstly, this paper designs a time series scenario generation method for renewable energy output based on a Deep Belief Network (DBN) to fully explore the characteristics of renewable energy output. Then, considering various cost factors of PV and energy storage, a capacity determination model is established by analyzing the relationship between annual planning costs, PV connection capacity, energy storage installation capacity, and power. Case studies are conducted on the IEEE-33 node system to compare and analyze the impact of active distribution network strategies on the planning results of PV and energy storage equipment under different scenarios. The results show that by incorporating demand-side response and bidirectional dynamic reconfiguration strategies into the active distribution network, the selection and sizing of PV energy storage can significantly improve the PV absorption capacity, achieve the lowest planning cost, and address the issue of low voltage levels during periods of excess PV output due to bidirectional reconfiguration. This improves the economic efficiency and reliability of the operation of power distribution networks with a high proportion of PV, providing a solution for energy storage planning that considers the randomness of renewable energy output. To achieve a more ecologically friendly energy transition by the year 2050 under the European "green" accord, hydrogen has recently gained significant scientific interest due to its efficiency as an energy carrier. This paper focuses on large-scale hydrogen production systems based on marine renewable-energy-based wind turbines and tidal turbines. The paper reviews the different technologies of hydrogen production using water electrolyzers, energy storage unit base hydrogen vectors, and fuel cells (FC). The focus is on large-scale hydrogen production systems using marine renewable energies. This study compares electrolyzers, energy storage units, and FC technologies, with the main factors considered being cost, sustainability, and efficiency. Furthermore, a review of aging models of electrolyzers and FCs based on electrical circuit models is drawn from the literature and presented, including characterization methods of the model components and the parameters extraction methods, using a dynamic current profile. In addition, industrial projects for producing hydrogen from renewable energies that have already been completed or are now in progress are examined. The paper is concluded through a summary of recent hydrogen production and energy storage advances, as well as some applications. Perspectives on enhancing the sustainability and efficiency of hydrogen production systems are also proposed and discussed. This paper provides a review of behavioral aging models of electrolyzers and FCs when integrated into hydrogen production systems, as this is crucial for their successful deployment in an ever-changing energy context. This paper describes a new underwater pumped storage hydropower concept (U.PSH) that can store electric energy by using the high water pressure on the seabed or in deep lakes to accomplish the energy transition from fossil to renewable sources. Conventional PSH basically consists of two storage reservoirs (upper and lower lake) at different topographical heights. It needs special topographic conditions, which are only limitedly available in mountain regions. Furthermore, due to the lack of acceptance and the environmental impact, new conventional PSH projects are very unlikely to be built in larger numbers in Europe in the near future. The presented solution solves these issues by placing the storage system on the seabed, thus having other geographical requirements. It operates as follows: in contrast to well-known conventional PSH plants, which use two separated water reservoirs of different heights, the U.PSH concept uses the static pressure of the water column in deep waters by installing a hollow concrete sphere in deep water. Storage of electricity is achieved by using a reversible pump in the hollow sphere. Upon opening a valve, water flows into the sphere, driving a turbine/generator, thereby discharging the storage device. In order to re-charge, the water is pumped out of the sphere against the pressure of the surrounding water. The power and energy, respectively, are proportional to the surrounding water pressure at the seabed. The amount of energy stored depends on the water depth and the volume of the spheres. The spheres need a cable connection to the shore or to a close-by floating transformer station (e.g., an offshore wind plant). No other connections such as pipes are needed. The paper is devoted to the development of a device for protecting facilities with turn-to-turn insulation, namely transformers and wind generators in order to increase the reliability of operation of electrical power systems, renewable energy installations and energy storage systems. The paper presents the results of experimental studies of the parameters of a prototype frequency-dependent device, as well as an assessment of the effectiveness of suppression of high-frequency surge voltages by the proposed device. The results of four groups of measurements are shown, which were compared with each other and with the results of previously showed computer simulations. The high efficiency of the proposed device when influencing the slope and amplitude of short high-frequency transients is shown. It is indicated that the parameters proposed earlier in the simulation allow the device to be used effectively. A brief analysis of alternative methods and means of protection is provided, and the prospects for using the device as protective equipment for wind power plants are also considered. Building-integrated flexible resources can offer economical availability to accommodate high-penetrated renewable energy sources (RESs), which can be potentially coordinated to achieve cost-effective supply. This paper proposes a resilience-oriented planning model of urban distribution system source–network–load–storage in the context of high-penetrated building-integrated resources. In this model, source–network–load–storage resources are cost-optimally planned, including the lines, soft open point (SOP), building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs), building-integrated wind turbine (BIWT), building-integrated energy storage system (ESS), etc. To enhance fault recovery capability during extreme faults, fault scenarios are incorporated into the distribution system operation via coupled multiple recovery stages. The resilience-oriented planning is a thorny problem due to its source–network–load–storage couplings, normal-fault couplings, etc. The original resilience-oriented planning is reformulated as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem, which can then be solved with a two-stage method and evaluated via a multi-dimensional evaluation metrics. The proposed planning methodology is benchmarked over a Portugal 54-node urban distribution system to verify the superiority and effectiveness on the system economy and resilience levels. This paper presents a successful application of the physical activation method to convert agricultural biowaste, specifically Millettia pinnata (MP) shells, into activated carbon (AC) for use in cost-effective and environmentally sustainable high-performance supercapacitors. The AC derived from MP shells exhibited remarkable porosity, with a high surface area of 710 m2 g−1 and a total pore volume of 0.143 cm3 g−1, as determined by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. Electrochemical assessments revealed that the prepared AC materials demonstrated exceptional electrochemical performance. Experimental results indicate that the AC material achieved a notable specific capacitance of 314.5 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 and retains 80 F g−1 at 20 A g−1 in 6.0 M KOH electrolyte. The symmetric supercapacitors constructed using MPAC exhibit an impressive specific capacitance of 120.4 F g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 and energy density of 16.72 W h kg−1 at a power density of 200 W kg−1. Furthermore, these supercapacitors demonstrate good cyclability with capacity retention of 77.1%, maintaining their performance consistently over an extensive span of 5000 charge–discharge cycles at 1 A g−1. This study highlights the promising potential of AC materials derived from MP shells for the development of high-performance supercapacitors, substantiated by strong experimental evidence. The usage of renewable energy sources is increasing to reduce the carbon footprint. Renewable energy sources provide limited electricity generation and cannot meet the variable energy demand. Large-scale energy storage systems are needed for sustainability. The applicability of energy storage technology depends on many factors such as energy source, site availability, energy density, storage time, storage capacity, system cost, environmental impact, reliability, durability, and system integration capacity. Solid gravity storage technology is a promising new alternative in large-scale energy storage. There are various types of SGES systems classified according to the application method. In this paper, studies on various SGES methods are reviewed. Studies on the applicability factors of SGES systems and their integration into the electricity grid are evaluated. SGES technology has advantages in terms of geographical compatibility, storage volume, security, and energy conversion efficiency. It has been observed that successful results have been obtained in the theoretical studies. With the continuous increase in global energy demand and growing environmental awareness, the utilization of renewable energy has become a worldwide consensus. In order to address the challenges posed by the intermittent and unpredictable nature of renewable energy in distributed power distribution networks, as well as to improve the economic and operational stability of distribution systems, this paper proposes the establishment of an active distribution network capable of accommodating renewable energy. The objective is to enhance the efficiency of new energy utilization. This study investigates optimal scheduling models for energy storage technologies and economic-operation dispatching techniques in distributed power distribution networks. Additionally, it develops a comprehensive demand response model, with real-time pricing and incentive policies aiming to minimize load peak–valley differentials. The control mechanism incorporates time-of-use pricing and integrates a chaos particle swarm algorithm for a holistic approach to solution finding. By coordinating and optimizing the control of distributed power sources, energy storage systems, and flexible loads, the active distribution network achieves minimal operational costs while meeting demand-side power requirements, striving to smooth out load curves as much as possible. Case studies demonstrate significant enhancements during off-peak periods, with an approximately 60% increase in the load power overall elevation of load factors during regular periods, as well as a reduction in grid loads during evening peak hours, with a maximum decrease of nearly 65 kW. The widespread adoption of renewable energy sources presents a significant challenge to the flexibility of power system. To assess the flexibility of the power system in scenarios with uncertain renewable energy output, it is crucial to quantify it quantitatively. This evaluation plays a vital role in planning flexible regulatory resources and dispatching resources for both the energy source and load. This study introduces a novel flexibility assessment model tailored for power grids with high renewable energy penetration, specifically addressing uncertainty associated with wind and PV. By analyzing the impact of wind and PV uncertainty on system flexibility, the paper proposes an improved cohesive hierarchical cluster analysis method, incorporating reliability considerations based on the Davies-Bouldin classification reliability index. Additionally, the study develops models for flexibility resources and demands within high renewable energy power systems, along with quantitative assessment indicators across three key aspects. Through a structured flexibility assessment process accounting for wind and PV uncertainty, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated using real-world data from a renewable energy power grid in Shandong province. A set of typical renewable energy output scenarios with uncertainty is constructed using the improved hierarchical cluster analysis method. The study then analyses the impact of different wind and PV penetration rates and the proportion of energy storage units on system flexibility by the flexibility assessment model to validate the proposed method's effectiveness. This paper presents both the techno-economic planning and a comprehensive sensitivity analysis of an off-grid fully renewable energy-based microgrid (MG) intended to be used as an electric vehicle (EV) charging station. Different possible plans are compared using technical, economic, and techno-economic characteristics for different numbers of wind turbines and solar panels, and both single and hybrid energy storage systems (ESSs) composed of new Li-ion, second-life Li-ion, and new lead–acid batteries. A modified cost of energy (MCOE) index including EVs' unmet energy penalties and present values of ESSs is proposed, which can combine both important technical and economic criteria together to enable a techno-economic decision to be made. Bi-objective and multi-objective decision-making are provided using the MCOE, total met load, and total costs in which different plans are introduced as the best plans from different aspects. The number of wind turbines and solar panels required for the case study is obtained with respect to the ESS capacity using weather data and assuming EV demand according to the EV population data, which can be generalized to other case studies according to the presented modelling. Through studies on hybrid-ESS-supported MGs, the impact of two different global energy management systems (EMSs) on techno-economic characteristics is investigated, including a power-sharing-based and a priority-based EMS. Single Li-ion battery ESSs in both forms, new and second-life, show the best plans according to the MCOE and total met load; however, the second-life Li-ion shows lower total costs. The hybrid ESSs of both the new and second-life Li-ion battery ESSs show the advantages of both the new and second-life types, i.e., deeper depths of discharge and cheaper plans. Introduction: Distributed power supply has increasingly taken over as the energy industry's primary development direction as a result of the advancement of new energy technology and energy connectivity technology. In order to build isolated island microgrids, such as villages, islands, and remote mountainous places, the distributed power supply design is frequently employed. Due to government subsidies and declining capital costs, the configured capacity of new energy resources like solar and wind energy has been substantially rising in recent years. However, the new energy sources might lead to a number of significant operational problems, including over-voltage and ongoing swings in the price of power. Additionally, the economic advantages availed by electricity consumers may be impacted by the change in electricity costs and the unpredictability of the output power of renewable energy sources. Methods: This paper proposes a novel framework for enhancing renewable energy management and reducing the investment constraint of energy storage. First, the energy storage incentive is determined through a bi-level game method. Then, the net incentive of each element is maximized by deploying a master-slave approach. Finally, a reward and punishment strategy is employed to optimize the energy storage in the cluster. Results: Simulation results show that the proposed framework has better performance under different operating conditions. Discussion: The energy storage operators and numerous energy storage users can implement master-slave game-based energy storage pricing and capacity optimization techniques to help each party make the best choices possible and realize the multi-subject interests of energy storage leasing supply and demand win-win conditions. Optimal power flow (OPF) analysis enables the in-depth study and examination of islanded microgrid design and operation. The development of the analysis framework, including modeling, formulating, and selecting effective OPF solvers, however, is a nontrivial task. As a result, this paper presents a tutorial on an OPF modeling framework, offering a mathematical model that can be readily implemented using established open-source software tools such as OpenDSS, Pyomo, and IPOPT. The framework is versatile, capable of representing single-phase and unbalanced three-phase islanded microgrids. Various inverter models, such as those of grid forming and following equipped with their operating characteristics, can be incorporated. In view of the existing literature, only the optimization operation of hydrogen energy–wind/light new energy is considered, and the research problems such as comprehensive utilization of water resources and load control strategies are ignored. Based on the analysis of load characteristics of offshore wind power, this paper has established an optimal operation model of power‐fresh water energy system based on "wind‐hydrogen‐water‐electricity" interaction. Meanwhile, an electrolytic hydrogen individual load control strategy is proposed to match wind power fluctuations from the perspective of internal load regulation of electrolytic hydrogen system. From the economic characteristics, operation characteristics, accommodation situation and other simulation analysis, it can reduce the total operating cost by about 3.1%, improve the utilization rate of electrolytic cell capacity, and meet the water demand of coastal users. It shows that the individual control strategy and optimal operation model have advantages, which is of great significance for realizing low‐carbon, safe, and economical operation of power grid in the future. Problem definition: More than 99% of the new power generation capacity to be installed in the United States from 2023 to 2050 will be powered by wind, solar, and natural gas. Additionally, large-scale battery systems are planned to support power systems. It is paramount for policymakers and electric utilities to deepen the understanding of the operational and investment relations among renewable, flexible (natural gas-powered), and storage capacities. In this paper, we optimize both the joint operations and investment mix of these three types of resources, examining whether they act as investment substitutes or complements. Methodology/results: Using stochastic control theory, we identify and prove the structure of the optimal storage control policy, from which we determine various pairs of charging and discharging operations. We find that whether storage complements or substitutes other resources hinges on the operational pairs involved and whether executing these pairs is constrained by charging or discharging. Through extensive numerical analysis using data from a Florida utility, government agencies, and industry reports, we demonstrate how storage operations drive the investment relations among renewable, flexible, and storage capacities. Managerial implications: Storage and renewables substitute each other in meeting peak demand; storage complements renewables by storing surplus renewable output; renewables complement storage by compressing peak periods, facilitating peak shaving and displacement of flexible capacity. These substitution and complementary effects often coexist, and the dominant effect can alternate as costs change. A thorough understanding of these relations at both operational and investment levels empowers decision makers to optimize energy infrastructure investments and operations, thereby unlocking their full potential. Due to the volatile nature of renewable energy sources (RES), energy storage systems (ESS) are the primary impetus for increased dependence on RES in current power networks. Because of their quick responsiveness and rapid transition from charge to discharge in less than 1 ms, batteries are necessary even in the presence of alternative storage devices. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have demonstrated their viability as ESS for RES. Given the significance of LIBs, it was vital to correctly and effectively quantify their costs in energy systems. Most studies did not offer a true real-world assessment of these batteries' aging but instead averaged their performance indices, which vary substantially depending on the system's working circumstances such as temperature, voltage, state of charge, and current level. Failure to use precise values for each charging/discharging operation might result in disastrous judgments and future techno-economic issues. This paper provides a novel and highly accurate piecewise modeling of LIBs for each charging and discharging operation based on real-world operational conditions. This novel aging model is used for calculating hourly aging and its impact on energy costs. The musical chair algorithm (MCA) is used to determine the optimal parameters' values of the LIB's model and the appropriate size of autonomous hybrid RES. When compared to other optimization techniques, the findings of optimal parameter determination using MCA revealed an 80% reduction in convergence time and better accuracy. The novel proposed aging model of the batteries predicts a 60% cost share of the battery, meanwhile, the existing strategy predicts 51% only. Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) can be used as a lossless form of hydrogen storage at ambient conditions. The storage cycle consists of the exothermic hydrogenation of a hydrogen-lean molecule at the start of the transport, usually the hydrogen production site, becoming a hydrogen-rich molecule. This loaded molecule can be transported long distances or be used as long-term storage due to its ability to not lose hydrogen over long periods of time. At the site or time of required hydrogen production, the hydrogen can be released through an endothermic dehydrogenation reaction. LOHCs show similar properties to crude oils, such as petroleum and diesel, allowing easy handling and possibilities of integration with current infrastructure. Using this background, this paper reviews a variety of aspects of the LOHC life cycle, with a focus on currently studied materials. Important factors such as the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation requirements for each material are analysed to determine their ability to be used in current scenarios. Toluene and dibenzyltoluene are attractive options with promising storage attributes, however their dehydrogenation enthalpies remain a problem. The economic feasibility of LOHCs being used as a delivery device were briefly analysed. LOHCs have been shown to be the cheapest option for long distance transport (>200 km), and are cheaper than most at shorter distances in terms of specifically transport costs. The major capital cost of an LOHC delivery chain remains the initial investment for the raw materials and the cost of equipment for performing hydrogenation and dehydrogenation. This paper deals with a dynamical analysis of a supercapacitor based multilevel inverter. In Fact, applications for multi-level inverters based on supercapacitors include uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), grid-tied renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, and other power conversion systems where high-power quality and rapid energy transfer are important. In this paper, the present status of energy storage implementation and research in Arab countries (ACs) is investigated. The different technologies of energy storage are reviewed then projects and capacities of installed or planned energy storage systems in the ACs are summarized based on published literature. In ACs, the installed and planned capacity of pumped hydro storage is 4365 MW, while for battery storage it is 5597 MW. No compressed energy storage projects are installed or planned in the near future. Green hydrogen as a fuel is planned in Egypt, Algeria, and Morocco. Renewable energy as a main employer of energy storage is predicted for the next 30 years; similarly, energy storage capacity is forecasted for the next 30 years. To enhance energy storage implementation it is recommended to include energy storage in all new commercial renewable energy projects. In addition to creating a regulatory framework that encourages the development of energy storage schemes. To advance research in the energy storage, modeling and simulation of energy storage systems in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors are recommended. By the end of 2023, the installed capacity of renewable energy (RE) in China accounted for 36.0% of the total installed capacity, while the installed capacity of conventional thermal power units had decreased from 64.0% in 2016 to 47.6% in 2023. RE accounts for a higher proportion, leading to a shortage of peak shaving resources (PSR). As a result, the current RE quota system becomes unsustainable. In this paper, RE stations can classify their electricity into high-quality and low-quality parts based on the accuracy of their power curves. High-quality RE will be fully purchased and under stricter assessment, while low-quality RE will compete for clearing in the intraday spot market. Firstly, the article estimates the degree of PSR shortages in different periods based on technical parameters of thermal units, RE forecast information, and load forecast information. Consequently, the PSR supply capacity (PSR supply capacity) can be divided into PSR shortage status and sufficient status. Secondly, a clearing method for low-quality RE in the spot market is designed. The grid can set different PSR supply capacitys for different time periods according to the degree of PSR shortage. The assessment indicator values vary under different PSR supply capacitys. Lastly, based on the classification sales channels, this paper proposes a power curve optimization strategy that considers self-owned battery energy storage (BES). Case studies show that the proposed classification sales channels can effectively decrease the degree of PSR shortage while taking into account the benefits of RE station. With the aggregation of renewable energy in the power system, the uncertainty caused by the renewable energy affects the planning and operation of power systems. Meanwhile, the existing planning models fail to consider renewable energy uncertainty methods, specifically concerning renewable energy confidence and future possible scenarios; thus, a confidence-based scenario cluster method is presented. A novel generator, network, load, and energy storage (GNLS) co-planning model is proposed in the paper. First, a confidence-based scenario cluster is built, which can reflect uncertainties by clustering and analyzing wind, solar, and load. Second, the proposed model focuses on load and energy storage co-planning, and in addition, relevant flexible indices are used to assess the model. Finally, the GNLS co-planning model is built as a bi-level stochastic model on continuous time scales. The model is solved using the Benders decomposition algorithm. The method in this paper is validated using an IEEE RTS 24-bus and a real test system in China to demonstrate the reduction in renewable energy curtailment and optimization of economic factors in power system planning.

Green ammonia, a promising zero-carbon energy storage vector, has never been produced using solely tidal stream energy despite its predictable characteristics. Combining tidal stream sites with a phase difference (tidal phasing) facilitates anticorrelation between these sites' power profiles, enabling a more consistent power output. Green ammonia production benefits from a steady and predictable power input. The objective of this paper is to determine if nearby tidal sites have a large enough phase difference (anticorrelation) to reduce the cost of ammonia production. Moreover, producing green ammonia from underutilized or unutilized remote and grid-constrained tidal stream sites may enable viability of these sites. This paper is the first analysis of green ammonia production using solely tidal stream energy and the first analysis of tidal phasing for green fuel production. Two UK case studies are presented in i) the North Channel of the Irish Sea and ii) Orkney. There are tidal sites in each which have a phase difference (e.g. the Mull of Kintyre/Sound of Islay, and Graemsay/North Ronaldsay with correlation coefficients of 0.17 and −0.02 respectively), utilising this phase difference reduces the levelized cost of ammonia by 8% in the Irish Sea and by 12% in Orkney. The modern world is moving towards a zero-emission economy; therefore, various actions are being taken to reduce the share of fossil fuels in energy production. The article examines the potential for the continued expansion of photovoltaic farms, with a special emphasis on farms utilising east–west panel orientation. The east–west orientation is an innovative solution with many advantages over the traditional north–south arrangement. The paper also makes a detailed assessment of the photovoltaic farm environment by applying two analyses based on the following factors: Political, Economic, Social, and Technological (PEST) and Demographic, Economic, Environmental, Political, Legal, Informational, Social, and Technological (DEEPLIST) factors. This is followed by an insightful, comprehensive review of the most important factors that contribute to the efficiency of photovoltaic installations, namely site conditions, existing infrastructure, and ability to connect to the electricity grid. The paper also devotes space to an analysis of daily energy price changes that affect the economic efficiency of the installation and discusses the potential for energy storage in the context of photovoltaic farms. The development of photovoltaics also requires investing in energy storage. All discussed issues fall within the scope of photovoltaic farm development and optimal use of energy resources.

Examining coupled renewable-battery power plants ("hybrids") in congested areas provides insights into a future of increased wind and solar penetration. Our study focuses on two types of congested regions, Variable Renewable Energy (VRE)-rich Areas and Load Centers, and explores likely plant configuration choices for developers and transmission network planners. This paper examines how hybrid value, comprising energy and capacity value, varies by plant configuration and congested region type considering factors such as storage duration, battery degradation, and ability to charge from the grid. We select plant locations from across the seven main U.S. independent system operators (ISOs). Hybrid value for each configuration is computed based on profit-maximizing plant operation given perfect foresight, according to observed wholesale power market real time prices from 2018 to 2021. In VRE-rich Areas, the median increase in energy value from extending storage duration from one to 4 h is 29.4 % for solar and 26.8 % for wind, assuming low battery degradation costs and storage sized to 100 % of the plant's nameplate generation capacity. Increasing storage duration beyond 4 h does not substantially increase its value from energy markets, even in VRE-rich Areas. We find that solar hybrids reach a 90 % capacity credit with 4 h of storage, while wind hybrids require 8 h of storage, based on the capacity factor of each hybrid during the top 100 net load hours. Power-to-gas (PtG), consisting of water electrolysis and CO 2 methanation, is regarded as a promising technology for energy storage and carbon utilization. However, the PtG system is faced with frequently varying loads due to the non-dispatchable renewable power input. To support its efficient transient operation and control, this work was focused on development of novel dynamic model of PtG system that includes solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC) and tube bundle methanation reactors (MR), using an object-oriented language Modelica. The equations for each component in the system are derived based on the mechanisms of electrochemical/chemical reactions, gas flow, and heat transfer. The developed models are then utilized for numerical studies and thermodynamic analysis with both steady-state and dynamic simulations. The steady-state study is conducted including a sensitivity analysis with various input conditions and an energy analysis. The sensitivity analysis shows the variation of the reaction rate along the axial direction of the one-dimensional MR tube, as well as the shift in the position of the reaction hot spot. The optimum SOEC inlet temperature is fitted, adapted to different belonging powers. Moreover, the H/C ratio of MR is determined as 8.4 through a trade-off between the CO 2 conversion ratio and CH 4 yield. The dynamic simulations in response to the power disturbance have demonstrated the disparate time scales of flow and heat transfer, as revealed by a multi-domain analysis of heat transfer, mass transfer, and chemical reactions. The concentrations and temperatures of products along the MR tube axis exhibited different variation trends. In the dynamic response to the electricity input disturbance, the axial position of the hot spot temperature gradually crawls over time, and exhibits an interesting transient phenomenon of initial inverse response. One crucial requirement for power systems is the necessity to enhance flexibility, enabling the seamless integration of a substantial amount of renewable energy generation. While flexibility holds significance in current power systems, the escalating penetration of renewable energy resources emphasizes an ongoing and growing need for flexibility in the future, given the intermittent nature of these energy sources. To address the crucial aspects of decarbonization for sustainable development and recognizing decentralization as a strategy for grid development, this research concentrates on flexibility in the context of microgrids. Diverging from many existing review papers that explore flexibility in the broader power system context, this study pioneers an investigation from the local energy system's perspective, introducing a novel classification of flexibility resources. The exploration begins with elucidating various concepts and definitions of flexibility. Subsequently, flexibility resources available to microgrids are systematically categorized based on the operation modes. A comprehensive review of conducted research follows, highlighting diverse categories and emphasizing primary flexibility resources. Special attention is given to recent concepts such as power-to-gas/hydrogen conversion, using electrolyzers as flexible loads for (green) hydrogen production, and various storage devices, as they offer flexibility during both off-grid and grid-connected operation modes in microgrids. Furthermore, a comparative analysis is undertaken, detailing the objective function(s) and flexibility resources employed in different research studies. Renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, can reduce environmental pollution and promote the transformation of the energy structure. However, the intermittency and uncertainty of new energy sources such as wind and photovoltaics pose challenges to large-scale grid integration. Effective utilization of intermittent energy sources requires large-scale energy storage facilities. Salt rock is recognized as an excellent medium for underground large-scale energy storage with a wide range of applications. This paper identifies the potential of salt caverns to be used for large-scale energy storage by analyzing the distribution of wind and solar energy resources in China, taking into account the grid-connected infrastructure of the Chinese power grid and the geographic location of salt mines. The overlapping areas are identified for utilization in compressed air energy storage and hydrogen storage. Through meticulous categorization and analysis of the factors influencing salt cavern underground storage site selection, the AHP-EWM method is introduced to establish an objective hierarchy model for a comprehensive evaluation system of salt cavern underground storage site selection. Isolated DC microgrid-based renewable energy sources (RES) require a concurrent high energy and high-power density presence. The most effective approach is employing a hybrid energy storage system (HESS). Supercapacitors (SCs) are used to recover braking energy during fast power changes to improve battery performance and decrease battery stress. Additionally, SCs can be utilized to keep batteries charged for prolonged periods and store surplus energy generated by RES. This paper suggests an energy management technique EMT to facilitate energy sharing among RES, HESS, and the demand load. The EMT ensures that the state of charge SOC of the HESS remains within the limitation range (80% ≥ SOC ≥ 20%). Furthermore, the EMT regulates the DC link voltage and tracks the battery and SC with desired current references in twelve different scenarios. The effectiveness of the suggested EMT is verified through simulated tests performed under various fluctuations and operating situations. The EMT demonstrates successful power sharing among the components and achieves faster DC link voltage regulation with less than 2% overshoot. The quest for a carbon–neutral energy future has positioned hydrogen as a pivotal player in global-sustainability efforts. Nigeria currently relies on 80% thermal energy generation. However, studies have shown that less than 60% of the population have access to power. To address this issue, Nigeria has developed an energy transition plan to achieve net-zero emissions by utilizing eco-friendly and sustainable renewable energy sources. However, the effectiveness of renewable energy resources is often hampered by seasonal variations, which limit the amount of energy that can be produced to meet growing demand. One effective solution to this challenge is long-term energy storage, particularly during periods of low demand. Power-to-X (PtX) technology offers a promising approach by enabling long-term sustainable energy generation and storage for future use when renewable energy availability decreases during peak demands. This study critically reviews the latest advancements in renewable PtX technology and evaluates its potential application within Nigeria's energy sector. Furthermore, it explores the potential obstacles to the widespread adoption of PtX technology in Nigeria. Despite Nigeria's significant potential for implementing PtX initiatives, the country currently falls behind in technology deployment and viable production pathways for sustainable PtX implementation. This shortfall is primarily due to lack of policies, frameworks, and financing schemes to support infrastructural development, especially for long-term energy storage. Given the intermittent nature of renewable energy, a transition strategy that includes adequate storage capacity is crucial. Although green hydrogen, a key component of PtX, has substantial potential as an energy carrier in Nigeria, its immediate use is limited by high production costs. Nonetheless, ongoing efforts to diversify Nigeria's energy mix through infrastructure and policy developments could eventually establish a roadmap for PtX implementation, promoting long-term energy sustainability and distribution efficiency. In the current model, the unclear and unreasonable method of revenue sharing among wind-solar-storage hybrid energy plants may a lso hinder the effective measurement of energy storage power station costs. This lack of clarity discourages energy storage from effectively collaborating with renewable energy stations for green power trading and spot trading. Therefore, this study proposes an optimal revenue sharing model of wind-solar-storage hybrid energy plant under medium and long-term green power trading market to facilitate the coordinated operation and equitable revenue allocation. Firstly, a method for decomposing transaction volume of green power is introduced by considering the uncertainty of spot market prices and physical delivery characteristics of green power trading. Then, a coordinated scheduling strategy of hybrid renewable energy plant is proposed to maximize revenues generated from both the green power and spot markets. Consequently, a cost-benefit contribution index system is developed to quantify the contribution of energy storage in the wind-solar-storage hybrid power plant. The revenue sharing model based on the minimum cost-remaining savings (MCRS) method can significantly increase overall revenue for renewable energy plants by reducing deviation penalties. It also enhances the operating revenue of energy storage power stations by considering the contributions of both energy storage and renewable energy plant in the green power market. A new concept based on Power Plant Units, able to deliver renewable energy on demand, for the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy in Switzerland is presented. The technically realized efficiencies showed that complete electrification leads to the most efficient energy system and cheapest electricity. The electricity demand is expected to almost double, and the overall energy cost will increase by 20% compared to 2019. However, the technical challenges of seasonal electricity storage, without any reserves and redundancy, amounts to 20 TWh. Hydropower and PV without storage produce the cheapest electricity. Future nuclear fission technologies, e.g., molten salt Thorium breading reactor -- currently still in an experimental stage--might become the most economical and least environmental impact solution for CO2 neutral continuous electricity production. The opportunities for a massive increase of hydroelectric production are limited, already shifting the use of water (9 TWh) from summer to winter is a great challenge. PV and hydrogen production in Switzerland have the advantage to provide approximately 75% of the electricity without seasonal storage leading to significantly lower electricity cost than from imported hydrogen or synthetic hydrocarbons. The potential of renewable energy sources to lower greenhouse gas emissions and lessen our reliance on fossil fuels has accelerated their integration globally, and especially that of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Malaysia has shown great progress in the adoption of photovoltaic systems thanks to its plentiful solar resources. On the other hand, energy storage systems (ESSs) are becoming more and more necessary in order to guarantee grid stability and fully realize the benefits of PV systems. This study attempts to assess the current condition of PV installations in Malaysia with an emphasis on their economic feasibility, regulatory compliance, technological capabilities, and compatibility with various energy storage technologies. Malaysian photovoltaic (PV) systems' readiness to integrate energy storage systems (ESSs) using second-life electric vehicle batteries (SLEVBs) is examined in this article. Integrating PV systems with SLEVBs in residential ESSs shows economic viability, with a 15-year payback and 25% return on investment (ROI). Therefore, for every 1 MW of installed PV capacity, with ESS integration it is estimated to reduce approximately 3504 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually in Malaysia. The homeowner benefits from large electricity bill savings, net metering revenue, and various incentives or financing alternatives that make the project financially attractive despite the extended payback time. Energy storage solutions are needed to improve grid stability, energy usage, and solar power generation in Malaysia as renewable energy adoption increases. Reusing retired EV batteries for stationary storage could solve environmental and economic issues. The rise of electric vehicles (EVs) has initiated a significant transformation in both the transportation and energy sectors. With the increasing adoption of EVs, their interaction with the power grid is becoming more critical. A notable and innovative concept emerging in this context is Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) operations, which utilize the battery storage capabilities of EVs to meet residential energy demands. Our research provides a way of economically evaluating V2H operations under various environmental conditions including pricing, seasonal differences, and EV operations. The proposed model aids in understanding the optimal operation of V2H and identifying the factors that encourage its adoption. Furthermore, optimizing V2H use can promote renewable energy utilization, providing an additional solution to address its intermittent nature. The findings highlight the potential of V2H operations to contribute to more economically efficient energy systems, provided that supportive policies and adaptive technologies are in place. To meet the challenges of renewable energy consumption and improve the efficiency of energy systems, we propose an intelligent distributed energy dispatch strategy for multi-energy systems based on Nash bargaining by utilizing the power dispatch meta-universe platform. First, the operational framework of the multi-energy system, including wind park (WP), photovoltaic power plant (PVPP), and energy storage (ES), is described. Using the power dispatch meta-universe platform, the models of WP, PVPP, and ES are constructed and analyzed. Then, a Nash bargaining model of the multi-energy system is built and transformed into a coalition profit maximization problem, which is solved using the alternating direction multiplier method (ADMM). Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed strategy is verified. The results show that the strategy greatly improves the consumption of renewable energy sources and the profit of the overall system.
