Context: Anterior cruciate ligament injuries are directly related to the control of dynamic knee valgus in the landing of a jump, and this is mainly due to the correct activation and neuromuscular function of the lower-extremity muscles. The aim of the study is to assess the relationship between lower limb muscle activity during a single-legged drop jump and knee frontal plane projection angle (FPPA). Design: A correlation study. Methods: Thirty healthy collegiate female athletes were included in the study. Main outcomes measures were peak knee FPPA and muscle activity (% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction). Peak knee FPPA during a single-legged drop jump test was identified using a 2-dimensional motion analysis system. Muscle activity was assessed using a surface electromyograph for gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, biceps femoris, semitendinosus, vastus medialis quadriceps, vastus lateralis quadriceps, medial gastrocnemius, and lateral gastrocnemius. All variables were assessed for both dominant and nondominant limbs. A correlation analysis between peak knee FPPA and muscle activity was performed. Statistical significance was set at P <.05. Results: A mean peak knee FPPA of 14.52° and 13.38° was identified for dominant and nondominant limb single-legged drop jump test, respectively. Muscle activity (% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction) for muscles assessed ranged from 43.97% to 195.71% during the single-legged drop jump test. The correlation analysis found no significant correlation between any of the muscles assessed and peak knee FPPA during the single-legged drop jump test (Pearson coefficient between −.3 and.1). Conclusions: There is no association between muscle activity from the lower limb muscles and the knee FPPA during a single-legged drop jump in female athletes. The present randomized study investigated the effect of acute supplementation of 800 mg/kg of ketone monoester ingestion (KE) or placebo (PL) and 210 mg/kg of NaHCO3 co-ingestion on cycling performance of WorldTour cyclists during a road cycling stage simulation. Twenty-eight cyclists participated in the study (27.46 ± 4.32 years; 1.80 ± 0.06 m; 69.74 ± 6.36 kg). Performance, physiological, biochemical, and metabolism outcomes, gut discomfort, and effort perceived were assessed during a road cycling simulation composed of an 8-min time-trial (TT) performance + 30-s TT + 4.5 hr of outdoor cycling + a second 8-min TT + a second 30-s TT. Greater absolute and relative mean power during the first 8-min TT (F = 5.067, p =.033, η p 2 =.163 , F = 5.339, p =.029, η p 2 =.170 , respectively) was observed after KE than after PL (KE: 389 ± 34, PL: 378 ± 44 W, p =.002, d = 0.294 and KE: 5.60 ± 0.42, PL: 5.41 ± 0.44 W/kg, p =.001, d = 0.442). Additionally, greater concentration of β-hydroxybutyrate blood concentration (F = 42.195, p <.001, η p 2 =.619) was observed after KE than after PL during the first steps of the stage (e.g., after warm-up KE: 1.223 ± 0.642, PL: 0.044 ± 0.058 mM, p <.001, d = 2.589), although the concentrations returned to near baseline after 4.5 hr of outdoor cycling. Moreover, higher values of anion gap were observed (F = 2.333, p =.026, η p 2 =.080) after KE than after PL ingestion, after the warm-up and after the first 8-min and 30-s TT. Additionally, lower concentrations of HCO 3 − were reported in the KE condition after warm-up and after the first 8-min and 30-s TT. During the initial phase of the stage simulation, acute supplementation with KE + NaHCO3 co-ingestion enhanced 8-min TT cycling performance (3.1%) in WorldTour cyclists with a concomitant hyperketonaemia. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the kinematics and stability of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) of cats and dogs with and without a TMJ replacement (TMJR) prosthesis under simulated bite forces and mouth opening. ANIMALS: Sixteen cadaver skulls from domestic cats (n = 8) and medium- to large-breed dogs (n = 8). METHODS: Intact TMJs were tested. Following condylectomy and coronoidectomy, the skulls were fitted with a TMJR prosthesis unilaterally and retested. Prosthesis was similarly implanted in the contralateral TMJ in 4 cats and 4 dogs before retesting. Left and right bite motions were evaluated before bite contact to peak bite force (200 N in dogs, 63 N in cats). Mouth opening motion was recorded. Mandibular displacement under load was evaluated in 3 orthogonal planes. Maximal displacement was compared between TMJR groups and native TMJ. Prosthesis-bone motion of the temporal and mandibular components was evaluated during simulated bites and mouth opening. RESULTS: TMJR resulted in joint motion not demonstrably different from the native TMJ, with the ability to fully open and close the mouth and with minimal laterotrusion. The TMJR prosthesis demonstrated similar stability after unilateral and bilateral replacement during bite force and with an open mouth. Mean implant-bone motion during bite simulations for the temporal and mandibular TMJR components was ≤ 60 µm in cats and ≤ 30 μm in dogs. This paper presents an improved time-optimal trajectory planning algorithm leveraging the White Shark Optimizer (WSO), specifically designed for 6-degree-of-freedom (DOF) Supernumerary Robotic Limbs (SRL). This approach effectively addresses prevalent issues in trajectory planning, including low efficiency, premature convergence, and unstable operation. Beginning with an examination of the SRL’s structural peculiarities, an auxiliary joint is incorporated to rectify the coordinate offset, facilitating subsequent inverse kinematics analysis. By utilizing the WSO algorithm, we develop a timeoptimal trajectory optimization method within the joint space of the SRL. Moreover, to address the continuity challenges in the terminal movements of the SRL, we introduce a 3-5-3 piecewise polynomial trajectory planning method that integrates both 3- degree and 5-degree polynomials. Building on this foundational work, we present an optimization algorithm rooted in WSO to identify the most efficient time trajectory optimization strategy, considering multiple constraints. The effectiveness of the proposed optimization strategy is demonstrated through comprehensive co-simulation. The role of strengthening the lower limbs to optimize the biomechanics of the hip, knee and ankle during walking in patients with knee osteoarthritis, is still unclear. This study aimed to analyse the walking biomechanics of individuals with symptomatic mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis before and after a simplified lower limb resistance training protocol, focused on knee joint exercises with individualized load. Forty-one patients with symptomatic and radiographic mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis underwent 3D gait analysis pre-post 8 weeks lower limb resistance training protocol performed 3 times a week. Parameters investigated were spatiotemporal, sagittal range of motion, flexion and extension minimum and maximum values, power and moment of hip, knee and ankle, as well as self-reported pain and physical function by the Western Ontario MacMaster University Osteoarthritis Index. Paired t test, Wilcoxon, Spearman's correlation and a logistic model were used for statistical analysis, with p < 0.05. Pain improvement more than 2 points was considered clinically relevant. The effect size (ES) was calculated using Cohen's d. Post protocol walking speed increased 6.7% (ES: 0.711), cadence 3.7% (ES: 0.655), stride length 2.6% (ES: 0.542), and double support time reduced 6.9% (ES:0.459). It was also observed a significant increase in one maximum repetition test for legpress 46%, knee extension 23% and knee flexion chair 27% (p < 0.001). Patients reported a 62.5% reduction in pain (ES:1.518) and 64.9% improvement in physical function (ES:1.376). 82% of the patients presented more than 2 points improvement in pain. No evidence of strong correlations between pain, strength gains and gait parameters were found. There was a significant and clinical improvement of spatiotemporal gait parameters, pain, physical function, and strength after 8-week lower limb resistance training protocol. The purpose of this study was to develop a machine learning model to reconstruct time series kinematic and kinetic profiles of the ankle and knee joint across six different tasks using an ankle-mounted IMU. Four male collegiate basketball players performed repeated tasks, including walking, jogging, running, sidestep cutting, max-height jumping, and stop-jumping, resulting in a total of 102 movements. Ankle and knee flexion-extension angles and moments were estimated using motion capture and inverse dynamics and considered 'actual data' for the purpose of model fitting. Synchronous acceleration and angular velocity data were collected from right ankle-mounted IMUs. A time-series feature extraction model was used to determine a set of features used as input to a random forest regression model to predict the ankle and knee kinematics and kinetics. Five-fold cross-validation was performed to verify the model accuracy, and statistical parametric mapping was used to determine the difference between the predicted and experimental time series. The random forest regression model predicted the time-series profiles of the ankle and knee flexion-extension angles and moments with high accuracy (Kinematics: R2 ranged from 0.782 to 0.962, RMSE ranged from 2.19° to 11.58°; Kinetics: R2 ranged from 0.711 to 0.966, RMSE ranged from 0.10 Nm/kg to 0.41 Nm/kg). There were differences between predicted and actual time series for the knee flexion-extension moment during stop-jumping and walking. An appropriately trained feature-based regression model can predict time series knee and ankle joint angles and moments across a wide range of tasks using a single ankle-mounted IMU. The task of transporting objects is a fundamental part of daily living activities. Previous kinematic studies focusing on tasks such as pointing, reach-to-grasp, and drinking have not fully captured the motor behaviors involved in object transportation, including placing a cup on a table or storing items in specific places. Hence, this study aimed to analyze the motor behavior associated with transporting a mug using upper limb kinematic variables. Fifteen healthy adults were instructed to transport an open-handle mug across a table. The kinematic metrics evaluated included object end-error for accuracy, frontal and lateral end-range for precision, movement time, peak velocity, time to peak velocity for control strategy, object path ratio for efficiency, and interjoint coordination. The stability of motor behavior was assessed through a test-retest analysis. The mug transporting task achieved accuracy with a radius <10 mm around the target, a peak velocity of ∼0.4 m/s, a control strategy where acceleration time constituted about 30% of the movement time, and a slightly curved trajectory. The test-retest analysis confirmed stable motor behavior across all kinematic metrics (ICCs > 0.75). Thus, the mug transporting task exhibited unique and stable kinematic characteristics, distinguishing it from non-transport activities and effectively mirroring transporting activities of daily living. We consider a dense aggregate of elastic, frictional particles isotropically compressed and next uniaxial strained at constant pressure. We show how failure can be predicted if fluctuations in the kinematics of contacting particles are introduced. We focus on the second order work and the possibility that at some stressed states it becomes negative under proper perturbations. Our analysis involves both a theoretical model and numerical simulations based upon the distinct element method (DEM). The theoretical model deals with contacting particles with incremental relative displacements that deviate from the average deformation in order to ensure their equilibrium. Because of this, the macroscopic stiffness tensor of the aggregate, that relates increments in stress with increments in strain, does not have the major symmetry. Consequently, in the hardening regime, we predict stressed states in which the second order work vanishes. The model seems transparent, and it makes clear and illustrative the role played by the fluctuations introduced in the kinematics of contacting particles in relation to the vanishing of second order work in an aggregate of compressed particles. In addition to pain, specific low back pain is frequently accompanied by restricted range of motion (ROM) during gait. To compare the behavior of kinematic and spatiotemporal gait parameters, pain, functional status, and self-efficacy, in patients with a diagnosis of herniated disk or lumbar stenosis undergoing surgery, in the pre- and postoperative periods of 1 and 6 months (PO6). Seven participants and 11 control subjects were assessed. A kinematics system comprising 10 optoelectronic cameras was used to assess gait. The Roland-Morris questionnaire, pain intensity, and self-efficacy, over three periods, were used. The ROM of the pelvis, hip, and knee of the hernia group presented an increase after surgery and the stenosis group presented a reduction of values in the hip. During the stance phase, the pelvis and hip ROM of both groups remained smaller than the control group. There was improvement in pain in individuals with hernia and stenosis (effect size = 0.6 and 0.8, respectively) in the three analyzed moments; for functional status there was improvement in the first postoperative period (ES = 0.4) compared to the preoperative in those individuals with hernia; and those with stenosis had improvement at PO6 when compared to the time before the surgery (ES = 0.2). Surgical intervention modifies the spatiotemporal parameters, the ROM of the pelvis, hip, and knee in the total gait cycle, primarily in the sagittal plane, and causes alterations, particularly in the hip joint, in these individuals during the support phase. This study compared the efficacy of linear, non-linear and differential methods on variables related to ACL injury risk of a side-step cutting task in male and female basketball players. Thirty males and thirty females practiced basketball skills in sixty 90-minute sessions across 5 months. Ten players trained in each of the LP, NLP and DL female/male groups separately. Before and after the intervention, each player was tested on a side-step cutting task. A repeated 3 × 2 × 2 factorial ANOVA with repeated measures was performed for each biomechanical variable. Variables (trunk, hip, and knee flexion angle, knee valgus angle, ankle dorsiflexion angle, hip, knee, and ankle ROM, peak VGRF and knee extension/flexion, knee moment and ankle dorsiflexion moment) all revealed significant test by group interactions (P < 0.05) but no significant group by sex interactions (P > 0.05). In both sex, biomechanical changes were better in the NLP, followed by the DL and LP. It is argued that the advantage of the NLP method results from increased exploration of movement solutions induced by the manipulation of task constraints. Within the context of composite beam structure modeling, a refined model is combined with a simpler one solely within a region of interest, aiming to enhance result accuracy. The purpose is to gain computational cost without loss of precision. For that, the Partition Unity Method (PUM) is used to ensure the continuity condition on the displacement field. A 1D refined Sinus model and a 2D approach are involved to demonstrate the capability of the method. It is assessed on different numerical examples involving both laminated and sandwich beams. The accuracy of the results is shown using reference solutions and computations using a mono-model. The interest of the method is further demonstrating by estimating the computational cost with or without the coupling. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic molecules which comprise the smallest particles of dust in the interstellar medium (ISM). Due to their broad/complex emission profiles, obtaining kinematics is a challenge with traditional methods, especially before the advent of the JWST. In this work, we employ Principal Component Analysis (PCA) tomography to analyse JWST /NIRSpec IFU data of three nearby luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), namely, NGC 3256 N, NGC 3256 S, and NGC 7469. We detect the signature of rotation in the second principal component of the 3.3  |$\mu$| m PAH feature in all three targets. We construct velocity maps from the principal components for the 3.3  |$\mu$| m PAH feature, Br β (2.625  |$\mu$| m) and molecular hydrogen, H2 1–0 S(1) (2.12  |$\mu$| m). We find that in each target, the PAHs qualitatively follow the rotation of the galaxy, consistent with the rotational signature derived from Br β and H2. There are however some differences, with the PAH rotation in NGC 3256 N appearing at a different position angle, which suggest differences in the motion of the dust as compared to the gas. The detection of Keplerian rotation is rare among Class 0 protostellar systems. We have investigated the high-density tracer HCN as a probe of the inner disc in a Class 0 proto-brown dwarf candidate. Our ALMA high angular resolution observations show the peak in the HCN (3–2) line emission arises from a compact component near the proto-brown dwarf with a small bar-like structure and a deconvolved size of ∼50 au. Radiative transfer modelling indicates that this HCN feature is tracing the innermost, dense regions in the proto-brown dwarf where a small Keplerian disc is expected to be present. The limited velocity resolution of the observations, however, makes it difficult to confirm the rotational kinematics of this feature. A brightening in the HCN emission towards the core centre suggests that HCN can survive in the gas phase in the inner, dense regions of the proto-brown dwarf. In contrast, modelling of the HCO+ (3–2) line emission indicates that it originates from the outer pseudo-disc/envelope region and is centrally depleted. HCN line emission can reveal the small-scale structures and can be an efficient observational tool to study the inner disc properties in such faint compact objects where spatially resolving the disc is nearly impossible. The motion limitation after cervical discectomy and fusion alters the spine´s kinematics. Unphysiological strains may be the result and possible explanation for adjacent segment degeneration. Alterations to cervical kinematics due to cervical total disc replacement (TDR), especially two-level, are still under investigated. To investigate cervical motion including coupled motions after one-level and two-level TDR in the treated and also the adjacent segments. An in-vitro study using pure moment loading of human donor spines. Seven fresh frozen human cervical spine specimens (C4–T1, median age 46 with range 19–60 years, four female) were included in this study. Specimens were tested in the intact condition first, followed by one-level TDR at C5–6 which was subsequently extended one level further caudal (C5–7). Each specimen was quasistatically loaded with pure moments up to 1.5 Nm in flexion/extension (FE), lateral bending (LB), and axial rotation (AR) in a universal spine tester for 3.5 cycles at 1 °/s. During the tests three dimensional motion tracking was performed for each vertebral body individually. From that, the primary and coupled ROM of each spinal level during the third full cycle of motion were evaluated. Nonparametric statistical analysis was performed using a Friedman-test and post hoc correction with Dunn-Bonferroni-tests (p<.05). Ethics approval was obtained in advance. In FE, one-level TDR (C5–6) moderately increased primary FE in all four segments, but only significantly at the cranial adjacent level C4–5. Additional TDR at C6–7 further increased the ROM at the target segment without much influence on the other levels. Increasing implant height at C6–7 partially counteracted the increased FE. Coupled motions were minimal in all test conditions at all levels. In LB, coupled AR was observed in all test conditions at all levels. One-level TDR decreased primary LB at the target segment C5–6 significantly, without much influence on the other levels. Extending TDR to C6–7 decreased ROM in the target segment but without gaining statistical significance. Increasing implant height at C6–7 further decreased primary LB at the target segment, still without significance. Notably, coupled AR was significantly decreased at the cranial adjacent segment C4–5 compared to the intact condition. In AR, coupled LB was observed in all test conditions at the levels C4–5, C5–6, and C6–7, while the transition level to the thoracic spine C7–T1 showed only little coupled LB. Both one-level and two-level TDR showed little influence on primary AR or coupled motions at any level. Only after increasing implant height at C6–7 was the motion of the caudally adjacent level C7–T1 significantly altered. Evaluating primary FE, LB, and AR together with the associated coupled motions revealed widespread influence of cervical TDR not only on the motion of the treated level but also at the adjacent segments. The influence of two-level TDR is more widespread and involves more levels than one-level TDR. The prevention of unphysiological strains due to altered kinematics after cervical fusion, which could possibly explain adjacent segment degeneration, were a driving factor in the development of TDR. These experimental findings suggest cervical TDR influences the whole cervical spine, not only the treated segment. Bicycle simulators have been the subject of considerable research, however, few of these attempts have integrated direct balance control and realistic freedom of motion to deliver a real-world dynamic cycling experience. This study presents the BIKE (Bicycle Intrinsic Kinematics Emulator) system, a kinematic bicycle simulator, developed with the purpose of letting its users experience realistic steer, roll, yaw and sway motions. Motion is provided with Carvallo–Whipple bicycle model-based control of sway and yaw combined with passive steer and roll. This study validates the BIKE simulator by comparing cycling behaviour and subjective evaluation for the simulator with and without motion to outdoor tests with an instrumented bicycle. 15 participants of varying age and mass, performed straight-line cycling, at low ( $ 5\,\hbox {km/h} $ 5 km/h ) to high ( $ 40\,\hbox {km/h} $ 40 km/h ) velocities and zig-zag manoeuvres. Results show that users can successfully rely on existing cycling skills to use the simulator with motion. Objectively, in the kinematic sense, the simulator with motion performs similarly to an outdoor bicycle. Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is characterized by a complex clinical condition, whose typical features lead to impaired motor and functional skills. To date, limited data is available as regards symmetry of gait in PWS. The aim of this study was to characterize lower-limb asymmetry during gait in a group of Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) individuals by using the synchronized cyclograms and to compare it with those of two different control groups, a normal-weight group and an obese group. A total of 18 PWS, 30 normal weight (NW) and 28 obese individuals (OG) matched for age, sex and height were assessed via 3D gait analysis. Gait spatio-temporal parameters were computed together with angle-angle diagrams, characterized in terms of their geometric features (i.e. area, orientation, and trend symmetry index). Individuals with PWS exhibit reduced speed, stride length and cadence and increased duration of both stance and double support phase than the other groups. OG was characterized by the same pattern when compared to NW. With respect to inter-limb symmetry, individuals with PWS exhibited significantly larger cyclogram areas at hip joint with respect to the other two groups (203.32 degrees2 vs. 130.73 degrees2 vs. 111.59 degrees2) and significantly higher orientation angle (4.17° vs. 2.11° vs. 1.22°) and Trend Symmetry (3.72 vs. 2.02 vs. 1.21) with respect to the other two groups at knee joint; no differences were found at ankle joint. Both individuals with PWS and those of OG exhibited reduced ROM at knee and ankle joints with respect with normal weight, but no statistically significant differences were observed between PWS and OG. Transhumeral (TH) limb loss leads to loss of body mass and reduced shoulder range of motion. Despite most owning a prosthesis, prosthesis abandonment is common. The consequence of TH limb loss and prosthesis use and disuse during gait may be compensation in the upper body, contributing to back pain or injury. Understanding the impact of not wearing a TH prosthesis on upper body asymmetries and spatial-temporal aspects of gait will inform how TH prosthesis use and disuse affects the body. Does TH limb loss alter upper body asymmetries and spatial-temporal parameters during gait when wearing and not wearing a prosthesis compared to able-bodied controls? Eight male TH limb loss participants and eight male control participants completed three gait trials at self-selected speeds. The TH limb loss group performed trials with and without their prosthesis. Arm swing, trunk angular displacement, trunk-pelvis moment, and spatial-temporal aspects were compared using non-parametric statistical analyses. Both TH walking conditions showed greater arm swing in the intact limb compared to the residual (p≤0.001), resulting in increased asymmetry compared to the control group (p≤0.001). Without the prosthesis, there was less trunk flexion and lateral flexion compared to the control group (p≤0.001). Maximum moments between the trunk and pelvis were higher in the TH group than the control group (p≤0.05). Spatial-temporal parameters of gait did not differ between the control group and either TH limb loss condition. Prosthesis use affects upper body kinematics and kinetics, but does not significantly impact spatial-temporal aspects of gait, suggesting these are compensatory actions. Wearing a prosthesis helps achieve more normative upper body kinematics and kinetics than not wearing a prosthesis, which may help limit back pain. Biplanar radiography displays promising results in the production of subject-specific (S.specific) biomechanical models. However, the focus has predominantly centred on methodological investigations in gait analysis. Exploring the influence of such models on the analysis of high range of motion tasks linked to hip pathologies is warranted. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of S.Specific modelling techniques on the reliability of deep squats kinematics in comparison to generic modelling. 8 able-bodied male participants attended 5 motion capture sessions conducted by 3 observers and performed 5 deep squats in each. Prior to each session a biplanar scan was acquired with the reflective-markers attached. Inverse kinematics of pelvis and thigh segments were calculated based on S.specific and Generic model definition. Agreement between the two models femoropelvic orientation in standing was assessed with Bland-Altman plots and paired t- tests. Inter-trial, inter-session, inter-observer variability and observer/trial difference and ratio were calculated for squat kinematic data derived from the two modelling approaches. Compared to the Generic model, the S.Specific model produced a calibration trial that is significantly offset into more posterior pelvis tilt (–2.8±2.7), hip extension (–2.2±3.8), hip abduction (–1.2±3.6) and external rotation (–13.8±11.4). The S.specific model produced significantly different squat kinematics in the sagittal plane of the pelvis (entire squat cycle) and hip (between 40 % and 60 % of the squat cycle). Variability analysis indicated that the error magnitude between the two models was comparable (difference<2°). The S.specific model exhibited a lower variability in the observer/trial ratio in the sagittal pelvis and hip, the frontal hip, but showed a higher variability in the transverse hip. S.specific modelling appears to introduce a calibration offset that primarily translates into an effect in the sagittal plane kinematics. The complex anatomical structure of the foot-ankle imposes challenges to accurately quantify detailed hindfoot kinematics and estimate musculoskeletal loading parameters. Most systems used to capture or estimate dynamic joint function oversimplify the anatomical structure by reducing its complexity. Can four dimensional computed tomography (4D CT) imaging in combination with an innovative foot manipulator capture in vivo hindfoot kinematics during a simulated stance phase of walking and can talocrural and subtalar articular joint mechanics be estimated based on a detailed in silico musculoskeletal foot-ankle model. A foot manipulator imposed plantar/dorsiflexion and inversion/eversion representing a healthy stance phase of gait in 12 healthy participants while simultaneously acquiring 4D CT images. Participant-specific 3D hindfoot rotations and translations were calculated based on bone-specific anatomical coordinate systems. Articular cartilage contact area and contact pressure of the talocrural and subtalar joints were estimated using an extended foot-ankle model updated with an elastic foundation contact model upon prescribing the participant-specific rotations measured in the 4D CT measurement. Plantar/dorsiflexion predominantly occurred at the talocrural joint (RoM 15.9±3.9°), while inversion/eversion (RoM 5.9±3.9°) occurred mostly at the subtalar joint, with the contact area being larger at the subtalar than at the talocrural joint. Contact pressure was evenly distributed between the talocrural and subtalar joint at the beginning of the simulated stance phase but was then redistributed from the talocrural to the subtalar joint with increasing dorsiflexion. In a clinical case study, the healthy participants were compared with four patients after surgically treaded intra-articular calcaneal fracture. Developments in vision-based systems and human pose estimation algorithms have the potential to detect, monitor and intervene early on neurodegenerative diseases through gait analysis. However, the gap between the technology available and actual clinical practice is evident as most clinicians still rely on subjective observational gait analysis or objective marker-based analysis that is time-consuming. This paper aims to examine the main developments of vision-based motion capture and how such advances may be integrated into clinical practice. The literature review was conducted in six online databases using Boolean search terms. A commercial system search was also included. A predetermined methodological criterion was then used to assess the quality of the selected articles. A total of seventeen studies were evaluated, with thirteen studies focusing on gait classification systems and four studies on gait measurement systems. Of the gait classification systems, nine studies utilized artificial intelligence-assisted techniques, while four studies employed statistical techniques. The results revealed high correlations of gait features identified by classifier models with existing clinical rating scales. These systems demonstrated generally high classification accuracies and were effective in diagnosing disease severity levels. Gait measurement systems that extract spatiotemporal and kinematic joint information from video data generally found accurate measurements of gait parameters with low mean absolute errors, high intra- and inter-rater reliability. Low cost, portable vision-based systems can provide proof of concept for the quantification of gait, expansion of gait assessment tools, remote gait analysis of neurodegenerative diseases and a point of care system for orthotic evaluation. However, certain challenges, including small sample sizes, occlusion risks, and selection bias in training models, need to be addressed. In this paper, a novel post-capture takeover control strategy of non-cooperative target with model uncertainties by the dual-arm space manipulator is proposed. Two mission objectives of target detumbling and pose adjusting are comprehensively considered. First, the motion trajectory of the target is parameterized with normalized time by a Bezier shape-based function. On this basis, by considering the resultant external force and moment constraint and the model uncertainties of the target, the mission duration is optimized to obtain the time optimal detumbling and pose adjusting the trajectory of the target. Furthermore, the desired trajectory in manipulator joint space is obtained by introducing the arm angle inverse kinematics method, and a joint trajectory tracking controller is designed based on the feedback linearization theory to track the desired joint trajectory. Talonavicular (TN) fusion is a common treatment for TN arthritis or deformity correction. There is incongruous evidence regarding remaining motion at the talocalcaneal and calcaneocuboid joints after TN fusion. Additionally, the effects of a malaligned TN fusion are not well understood and alignment of the fusion may be important for overall foot integrity. This project assessed the kinematic and kinetic effects of neutral and malaligned TN fusions. Ten cadaveric feet were tested on a gait simulator in four conditions: unfused, fused in neutral, fused in varus, and fused in valgus. The fusions were simulated with external fixation hardware. An eight‐camera motion analysis system and a 10‐segment foot model generated kinematic data, and a pressure mat captured pressure data. Simulated TN fusion was achieved in eight feet. From unfused to fused‐neutral, range of motion (ROM) was not eliminated in the adjacent joints, but the positions of the joints changed significantly throughout stance phase. Furthermore, the ROM increased at the tibiotalar joint. Plantar pressure and center of pressure shifted laterally with neutral fusion. The malalignments marginally affected the ROM but changed joint positions throughout stance phase. Pressure patterns were shifted laterally in varus malalignment and medially in valgus malalignment. The residual motion and the altered kinematics at the joints in the triple joint complex after TN fusion may subsequently increase the incidence of arthritis. Objectives: An accident during arboreal locomotion can lead to risky falls, but it remains unclear that the extent to which primates, as adept arborealists, change their locomotion in response to the perceived risk of moving on high supports in the tree canopy. By using more stable forms of locomotion on higher substrates, primates might avoid potentially fatal consequences. Materials and Methods: Using high‐speed cameras, we recorded the quadrupedal locomotion of four wild lemur species—Eulemur rubriventer, Eulemur rufifrons, Hapalemur aureus, and Lemur catta (N = 113 total strides). We quantified the height, diameter, and angular orientation of locomotor supports using remote sensors and tested the influence of support parameters on gait kinematics, specifically predicting that in response to increasing substrate height, lemurs would decrease speed and stride frequency, but increase stride length and the mean number of supporting limbs. Results: Lemurs did not adjust stride frequency on substrates of varying height. Adjustments to speed, stride length, and the mean number of supporting limbs in response to varying height often ran counter to predictions. Only E. rubriventer decreased speed and increased the mean number of supporting limbs on higher substrates. Discussion: Results suggest that quadrupedal walking is a relatively safe form of locomotion for lemurs, requiring subtle changes in gait to increase stability on higher—that is, potentially riskier—substrates. Continued investigation of the impact of height on locomotion will be important to determine how animals assess risk in their environment and how they choose to use this information to move more safely. Background: Upper oesophageal sphincter (UES) serves as an important anatomical and functional landmark during swallowing. However, the precise UES location before and during swallowing has not been well established. Objective: This study aimed to determine upper oesophageal sphincter (UES) location and displacement during swallowing accounting for sex, age, and height in healthy adults using 320‐row area detector computed tomography (320‐ADCT). Methods: Ninety‐four healthy adults (43 males; 22–90 years) underwent 320‐ADCT scanning while swallowing one trial of 10 mL honey thick barium. UES location at bolus hold and at maximum displacement and vertical displacement during swallowing were identified using the coordinates and the section classification of vertebrae (VERT scale). The differences and correlations of UES location and distance in terms of sex, age, and height were analysed using Mann–Whitney U test and Spearman's correlation coefficient. Results: UES locations at bolus hold and at maximum displacement were significantly lower and UES vertical displacement was significantly larger in males than in females (p <.001). UES location at bolus hold became lower with increasing age (r = −.312, p =.002), but the negative correlation was low at maximum displacement (r = −.230, p =.026), resulting in larger vertical distance with ageing. UES locations showed high negative correlation at bolus hold with height (r = −.715, p <.001), and showed moderate negative correlation at maximum displacement with height (r = −.555, p <.001), although this effect was unclear when analysed by sex. Conclusion: Males showed lower UES location and larger displacement than females. The impact of age was evident with lower location before swallowing and larger displacement during swallowing. Introduction: Athletes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) demonstrate altered surgical knee running kinematics and kinetics compared with the nonsurgical limb and healthy controls. The effect of running speed on biomechanics has not been formally assessed in athletes post-ACLR. The purpose of this study was to characterize how knee biomechanics change with running speed between 3.5-7 (EARLY) and 8-13 (LATE) months post-ACLR. Methods: Fifty-five Division I collegiate athletes post-ACLR completed running analyses (EARLY: n = 40, LATE: n = 41, both: n = 26) at 2.68, 2.95, 3.35, 3.80, and 4.47 m⋅s-1. Linear mixed-effects models assessed the influence of limb, speed, time post-ACLR, and their interactions on knee kinematics and kinetics. Results: A significant limb-speed interaction was detected for peak knee flexion, knee flexion excursion, and rate of knee extensor moment (P < 0.02), controlling for time. From 3.35 to 4.47 m⋅s-1, knee flexion excursion decreased by -2.3° (95% confidence interval, -3.6 to -1.0) in the nonsurgical limb and -1.0° (95% confidence interval, -2.3 to -0.3) in the surgical limb. Peak vertical ground reaction force, peak knee extensor moment, and knee negative work increased similarly with speed for both limbs (P < 0.002). A significant limb-time interaction was detected for all variables (P < 0.001). Accounting for running speed, improvements in all surgical limb biomechanics were observed from EARLY to LATE (P < 0.001), except for knee flexion at initial contact (P = 0.12), but between-limb differences remained (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Surgical and nonsurgical knee biomechanics increase similarly with speed in collegiate athletes at EARLY and LATE, with the exception of peak knee flexion, knee flexion excursion, and rate of knee extensor moment. Purpose: The aim was to quantify jump performance in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and determine if the expected deficit is related to their lower body joint kinetics and kinematics. Methods: Twenty-four ambulatory (n = 17 level I and 7 level II in the Gross Motor Function Classification System) children with spastic CP (n = 13 unilateral and 11 bilateral) and 24 age-, sex-, and race matched typically developing controls were studied. Jump height and peak power and range of motion at the hip, knee, and ankle of the more affected limb in children with CP and the nondominant limb in controls were assessed during a countermovement jump using three-dimensional motion capture and a force platform. Results: Compared with controls, children with CP had lower jump height (33%, Cohen's d (d) = 1.217), peak power at the knee (39%, d = 1.013) and ankle (46%, d = 1.687), and range of motion at the hip (32%, d = 1.180), knee (39%, d = 2.067), and ankle (46%, d = 3.195; all P < 0.001). Jump height was positively related to hip, knee, and ankle power and range of motion in children with CP (rs range = 0.474-0.613, P < 0.05), and hip and ankle power and knee and ankle range of motion in controls (rs range = 0.458-0.630, P < 0.05). The group difference in jump height was no longer detected when ankle joint power, ankle range of motion, or knee range of motion was statistically controlled (P > 0.15). The practice of the wheelchair rugby is becoming more and more worldwide. However, few biomechanical studies have focused on this sport. The aim of this study was to compare kinematic parameters of wheelchair rugby players, classified as defensive players (LP-D) versus offensive players (HP-O). Twenty-nine wheelchair rugby players (17 LP-D and 12 HP-O) performed a 20-m sprint test. The peak velocities, temporal parameters (propulsion phase time, deceleration phase time, cycle time and cycle frequencies) and asymmetries (the difference in peak velocities between the right and the left wheels) were measured at the acceleration and constant peak velocity phases of the sprint by an inertial measurement unit which was placed on each rear wheel. At the acceleration and constant peak velocity phases, peak velocities and cycle frequencies were higher in HP-O players than LP-D players. The deceleration phase times and the cycle times were higher in LP-D players than HP-O players. However, no significant difference in asymmetry was found between LP-D players and HP-O players. This study aimed to characterise bilateral asymmetry in running mechanics during perceptually regulated, high-intensity intermittent running in hypoxia and normoxia and examines whether inter-limb differences in running mechanics are modified between and within intervals. Nineteen trained runners completed 4 × 4-min treadmill running bouts (3-min passive recoveries) at a perceived rating exertion of 16 on the 6–20 Borg scale in either hypoxic (FiO2 = 0.15) or normoxic (FiO2 = 0.21) conditions. Ground reaction force recordings at constant velocity (group average: 14.8 ± 1.9 km/h) allowed measurement of running kinetics/kinematics and calculation of spring-mass model characteristics at the beginning and the end of each 4-min interval. Lower limb asymmetry was assessed from the 'symmetry angle' (SA) score. There were no between intervals (P > 0.087), within intervals (P > 0.076) or FiO2 (P > 0.128) differences in SA scores for any of the 16 biomechanical variables. Mean SA scores were lower than 1.5% for spatio-temporal variables, ~1.5–3% for braking and push-off phase durations, peak forces and impulses and ~4–6% for mean loading rate and vertical stiffness. With preserved lower limb asymmetries both between and within intervals and with additional hypoxia, trained runners completing perceptually regulated interval treadmill runs may anticipate a maintained performance without heightened injury risk. Baseball coaches often focus on the landing position of a pitcher's front foot as a key aspect of mechanics. Furthermore, controversy persists regarding positioning the rear foot on the first base or third base end of the rubber. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of rear and front foot placement on pitching biomechanics. Our hypotheses were that there would be significant kinematic and kinetic differences associated with foot placement. This was a retrospective review including 144 healthy right-handed adult baseball pitchers divided into groups based on their rear and front foot placements: first base open (1B-Open), first base closed (1B-Closed), third base open (3B-Open), and third base closed (3B-Closed). Two-way ANOVAs detected no statistically significant main effects for kinetic variables but several for kinematic variables. Open pitchers had less shoulder abduction at the time of ball release and greater maximum shoulder internal rotation velocity in comparison with closed pitchers. They also had less forearm pronation at the time of ball release and greater maximum elbow extension velocity. Athletes use either a seven-step or eight-step strategy to reach the first hurdle in the 110 m hurdle event. This study investigated the effect of step strategy on the start position, the block exit and the first four approach steps. Two-dimensional video data were collected in the sagittal plane from 12 male sprinters, grouped as seven-step (n = 6) or eight-step (n = 6) strategists. Mean block spacing was 0.08 m further apart, block contact time 0.06s longer, first step 0.25 m longer and first ground contact 0.03s longer for seven-step athletes compared with eight-step athletes. There was also a greater vertical displacement of the centre of mass (CoM) (0.04 m) for the seven-step athletes compared with the eight-step athletes. Additionally, the front hip mean angular acceleration was 197°/s2 slower for the seven-step athletes than the eight-step athletes. There was limited difference between groups for mean horizontal velocity at the moment of block exit (0.14 m/s). These technical alterations provide an important first insight into start kinematics. The findings of this study identify the position in the starting blocks, and the key parameters which pertain to the initial phases for a successful seven-step approach strategy to be employed. The Nordic Hamstring Exercise (NHE) effectively strengthens the knee flexors. Typically conducted without assistance, extended knee angles are not reached with sustained muscle activation in the presence of insufficient eccentric strength and/or fatigue. This might impair the desired neuromuscular adaptations and assessment accuracy. This study investigated kinetic and kinematic differences between assisted and unassisted NHEs (3 × 3 repetitions) performed by sixteen male sprinters (22 years, 181 cm, 76 kg). Kinetic (peak moment, impulse) and kinematic parameters (e.g., time under tension, range of motion to excessive downward acceleration (ROMDWA) were investigated. All analysed parameters significantly differed between assisted and unassisted NHEs (p ≤ 0.003; 0.635≤ ηp² ≤ 0.929) favouring assisted execution, except for peak moments and maximal hip flexion. Repetition 1 of assisted NHEs revealed 21% higher impulses rising to 82% during repetition 9. Equivalent interactions of mode and repetition became apparent for time under tension, ROMDWA, mean and fractional angular velocity. Unassisted NHEs elicited substantially greater inter-repetition fatigue (rep1 vs. rep9): +79% fractional angular velocity (d = 1.01), −41% impulse (d = 1.53), −31% ROMDWA (d = 0.99) and −29% time under tension (d = 1.45). Assisted NHEs ensured higher execution quality and lower between-participant variability by facilitating a controlled full-ROM movement. Our objective is to construct a model of the velocity ellipsoid and the retrieved Solar velocity for two programs of ultra-cool L dwarfs with 49 points (UCDs 49) and 39 points (UCDs 39) within 85◦ ≥ b ≥ -85◦. Firstly, we calculated the velocity dispersion (σ1, σ2, σ3; km s-1) ratios (σ2/σ1 = 0.78 ± 0.06; UCDs 49 &0.79 ± 0.05; UCDs 39) and (σ3/σ1 = 0.41 ± 0.04; UCDs 49 & 0.51 ± 0.03; UCDs 39), the vertex longitude (l2) which has often differed significantly from zero in many analyses (i.e., l2 = -0◦8967; UCDs 49 & -0.4454; UCDs 39). Here, we have computed the Solar velocity (S⊙; km s-1) as (32.13±0.18; UCDs 49 & 21.73± 0.22) and the other Solar elements (lA, bA). Blue compact galaxies, also known as H  ii galaxies, are dwarf, star-forming objects with relatively simple dynamics, which allows for the investigation of star formation mechanisms in a cleaner manner compared to late-type objects. In this study, we have examined various characteristics of the interstellar medium, in connection with the kinematics and dynamics of ionized gas, in Tol 1004-296 and Tol 0957-278. These two objects were observed using the SOAR Integral Field Spectrometer (SIFS) attached to the Southern Observatory for Astrophysical Research (SOAR). Both galaxies were observed with two gratings: one with medium resolution for monochromatic and abundance maps, and another with high resolution for kinematics and profile analysis. Additionally, we conducted an analysis on the velocity and velocity dispersion maps using intensity–velocity dispersion (I-σ) and velocity–velocity dispersion (Vr-σ) diagrams. Neither object exhibits a rotation pattern, and only Tol 1004-296 shows a velocity gradient between the two principal knots. However, the study reveals the significant role played by velocity dispersion in the star formation process. Specifically, we identified a relationship between monochromatic intensity, metallicity, and velocity dispersion, where high emission corresponds to low metallicity and low velocity dispersion. Tol 1004-296, in particular, exhibits a distinctive linear high velocity dispersion pattern between the two main knots, suggesting that both star formation sites are pushing the gas in opposite directions. Background: During city running or marathon races, shifts in level ground and up-and-down slopes are regularly encountered, resulting in changes in lower limb biomechanics. The longitudinal bending stiffness of the running shoe affects the running performance. Purpose: This research aimed to investigate the biomechanical changes in the lower limbs when transitioning from level ground to an uphill slope under different longitudinal bending stiffness (LBS) levels in running shoes. Methods: Fifteen male amateur runners were recruited and tested while wearing three different LBS running shoes. The participants were asked to pass the force platform with their right foot at a speed of 3.3 m/s ± 0.2. Kinematics data and GRFs were collected synchronously. Each participant completed and recorded ten successful experiments per pair of shoes. Results: The range of motion in the sagittal of the knee joint was reduced with the increase in the longitudinal bending stiffness. Positive work was increased in the sagittal plane of the ankle joint and reduced in the keen joint. The negative work of the knee joint increased in the sagittal plane. The positive work of the metatarsophalangeal joint in the sagittal plane increased. Conclusion: Transitioning from running on a level surface to running uphill, while wearing running shoes with high LBS, could lead to improved efficiency in lower limb function. However, the higher LBS of running shoes increases the energy absorption of the knee joint, potentially increasing the risk of knee injuries. Traditional motion analysis systems are impractical for widespread screening of non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk. The Kinect V2 has been identified as a portable and reliable alternative but was replaced by the Azure Kinect. We hypothesize that the Azure Kinect will assess drop vertical jump (DVJ) parameters associated with ACL injury risk with similar accuracy to its predecessor, the Kinect V2. Sixty-nine participants performed DVJs while being recorded by both the Azure Kinect and the Kinect V2 simultaneously. Our software analyzed the data to identify initial coronal, peak coronal, and peak sagittal knee angles. Agreement between the two systems was evaluated using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). There was poor agreement between the Azure Kinect and the Kinect V2 for initial and peak coronal angles (ICC values ranging from 0.135 to 0.446), and moderate agreement for peak sagittal angles (ICC = 0.608, 0.655 for left and right knees, respectively). At this point in time, the Azure Kinect system is not a reliable successor to the Kinect V2 system for assessment of initial coronal, peak coronal, and peak sagittal angles during a DVJ, despite demonstrating superior tracking of continuous knee angles. We present a new method for selecting A-type supergiants (A-SGs hereafter) in the LAMOST DR5 data set using the line indices, and identify 40 spectra of 30 A-SG candidates. Based on the analysis of the absolute magnitude of Gaia DR3, SIMBAD data base, ZTF light variation data, and spectral characteristics of A-SGs, we classified the 30 A-SG candidates into 18 A-SGs and 12 A-SG candidates with different levels of credibility. We also subclassify spectral types of 18 A-SGs and 12 A-SG candidates by using human eyes and find a good consistency between our results and those of MKCLASS for most of them. The spatial distribution of 18 A-SGs and 12 A-SG candidates indicates that they are located in the Galactic latitude smaller than 20○. In addition, the distribution of 13 A-SGs and 7 A-SG candidates with reliable Gaia DR3 kinematic parameters in the Toomre diagram indicates that they are located in the Galactic disc, which also suggests that they are young, massive stars. As cool clouds are entrained by a hot supersonic galactic wind, they may be shredded by hydrodynamical instabilities and incorporated into the hot flow. One-dimensional steady-state calculations show how cool cloud entrainment affects the bulk thermodynamics and kinematics of the hot gas: mass-loading decelerates the hot flow and changes its entropy. Here, we investigate the stability of mass-loaded hot winds using both perturbation analysis and 3D time-dependent radiative hydrodynamical simulations. We show that mass-loading is stable over a broad range of parameters and that the 1D time-steady analytic solutions exactly reproduce the 3D time-dependent calculations, provided that the flow does not decelerate sufficiently to become subsonic. For higher values of the mass-loading, the flow develops a second sonic point, with the first being at the edge of the wind-driving region. Strong deceleration increases the wind density and the flow becomes radiative, undergoing a thermal instability to form elongated dense cometary filaments. We explore the mass-loading parameters required to trigger this behaviour. For certain approximations, we can derive analytic criteria. In general, a mass-loading rate similar to the initial hot-mass outflow rate is required. In this sense, the destruction of small cool clouds by a hot flow may ultimately spontaneously generate fast cool filaments, as observed in starburst winds. Lastly, we find that the kinematics of filaments is sensitive to the slope of the mass-loading function. Filaments move faster than the surrounding wind if mass-loading is over long distances whereas filaments move slower than their surroundings if mass-loading is abrupt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present spatially resolved kinematics of 27 ALMA-identified dust-obscured star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at z  ∼ 1.3–2.6, as traced by Hα emission using VLT/KMOS near-infrared integral field spectroscopy from the 'KMOS-ALMA Observations of Submillimetre Sources' (KAOSS) Large Programme. We derive Hα rotation curves and velocity dispersion profiles for the DSFGs, and find that among the 27 sources with bright, spatially extended Hα emission, 24 display evidence for disc-like kinematics. We measure a median inclination-corrected velocity at 2.2  R d of v rot = 190 ± 40 km s−1 and intrinsic velocity dispersion of σ0 = 87 ± 6 km s−1 for these disc-like sources. The kinematics yield median circular velocities of v circ = 230 ± 20 km s−1 and dynamical masses within 2 R e (∼ 7 kpc radius) of M dyn = (1.1 ± 0.2) × 1011 M⊙. Compared to less actively star-forming galaxies, KAOSS DSFGs are both faster rotating with higher intrinsic velocity dispersions, but have similar v rot/σ0 ratios, median v /σ0 = 2.5 ± 0.5. We suggest that the kinematics of the DSFGs are primarily rotation supported but with a non-negligible contribution from pressure support, which may be driven by star formation or mergers/interactions. We estimate the normalization of the stellar mass Tully–Fisher relation (sTFR) for the disc-like DSFGs and compare it with local studies, finding no evolution at fixed slope between z  ∼ 2 and z  ∼ 0. Finally, we show that the kinematic properties of the DSFG population are consistent with them evolving into massive early-type galaxies, the dominant z  ∼ 0 population at these masses. AbstractThe meniscus plays a crucial role in the proper functioning of the knee joint, and when it becomes damaged, partial removal or replacement is necessary to restore proper function. Understanding the stress and deformation of the meniscus during various movements is essential for developing effective materials for meniscus repair. However, accurately estimating the contact mechanics of the knee joint can be challenging due to its complex shape and the dynamic changes it undergoes during movement. To address this issue, the open-source software SCONE can be used to establish a kinematics model that monitors the different states of the knee joint during human motion and obtains relevant gait kinematics data. To evaluate the stress and deformation of the meniscus during normal human movement, values of different states in the movement gait can be selected for finite element analysis (FEA) of the knee joint. This analysis enables researchers to assess changes in the meniscus. To evaluate meniscus damage, it is necessary to obtain changes in its mechanical behavior during abnormal movements. This study presents a comprehensive comparison between a marker-based motion capture system (MMC) and a video-based motion capture system (VMC) in the context of kinematic analysis using musculoskeletal models. Focusing on joint angles, the study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of VMC as a viable alternative for biomechanical research. Eighteen healthy subjects performed isolated movements with 17 joint degrees of freedom, and their kinematic data were collected using both an MMC and a VMC setup. The kinematic data were entered into the AnyBody Modelling System, which enables the calculation of joint angles. The mean absolute error (MAE) was calculated to quantify the deviations between the two systems. The results showed good agreement between VMC and MMC at several joint angles. In particular, the shoulder, hip and knee joints showed small deviations in kinematics with MAE values of 4.8∘, 6.8∘ and 3.5∘, respectively. However, the study revealed problems in tracking hand and elbow movements, resulting in higher MAE values of 13.7∘ and 27.7∘. Deviations were also higher for head and thoracic movements. Overall, VMC showed promising results for lower body and shoulder kinematics. However, the tracking of the wrist and pelvis still needs to be refined. AbstractThis study investigated whether modes of variance in trial-to-trial whole-body kinematic variability identified by principal component analysis (PCA) were consistent across data pre-processing conditions generated from a common dataset. Comparisons made included 1) when trajectory data was expressed in a global vs. local reference frame; 2) when the number of landmarks used to represent whole-body motion differed, and; 3) whether input trajectory data were normalized to participant stature. Varying data pre-processing conditions prior to PCA does not bias the total variance identified. Change of direction, stops, and pivots are among the most common non-contact movements associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in soccer. By observing these dynamic movements, clinicians recognize abnormal kinematic patterns that contribute to ACL tears such as increased knee valgus or reduced knee flexion. Different motions and physical demands are observed across playing positions, which may result in varied lower limb kinematic patterns. In the present study, 28 college and sub-elite soccer players performed four dynamic motions (change of direction with and without ball, header, and instep kick) with the goal of examining the effect of on-field positioning, leg dominance, and gender in lower body kinematics. Motion capture software monitored joint angles in the knee, hip, and ankle. A three-way ANOVA showed significant differences in each category. Remarkably, centrally positioned players displayed significantly greater knee adduction (5° difference, p = 0.013), hip flexion (9° difference, p = 0.034), hip adduction (7° difference, p = 0.016), and dorsiflexion (12° difference, p = 0.022) when performing the instep kick in comparison to their laterally positioned counterparts. These findings suggest that central players tend to exhibit a greater range of motion when performing an instep kicking task compared to laterally positioned players. At a competitive level, this discrepancy could potentially lead to differences in lower limb muscle development among on-field positions. Accordingly, it is suggested to implement position-specific prevention programs to address these asymmetries in lower limb kinematics, which can help mitigate dangerous kinematic patterns and consequently reduce the risk of ACL injury in soccer players. Background: Rotator cuff disorders, whether symptomatic or asymptomatic, may result in abnormal shoulder kinematics (scapular rotation and glenohumeral translation). This study aimed to investigate the effect of rotator cuff tears on in vivo shoulder kinematics during a 30° loaded abduction test using single-plane fluoroscopy. Materials and methods: In total, 25 younger controls, 25 older controls and 25 patients with unilateral symptomatic rotator cuff tears participated in this study. Both shoulders of each participant were analysed and grouped on the basis of magnetic resonance imaging into healthy, rotator cuff tendinopathy, asymptomatic and symptomatic rotator cuff tears. All participants performed a bilateral 30° arm abduction and adduction movement in the scapular plane with handheld weights (0, 2 and 4 kg) during fluoroscopy acquisition. The range of upward–downward scapular rotation and superior–inferior glenohumeral translation were measured and analysed during abduction and adduction using a linear mixed model (loads, shoulder types) with random effects (shoulder ID). Results: Scapular rotation was greater in shoulders with rotator cuff tendinopathy and asymptomatic rotator cuff tears than in healthy shoulders. Additional load increased upward during abduction and downward during adduction scapular rotation (P < 0.001 in all groups but rotator cuff tendinopathy). In healthy shoulders, upward scapular rotation during 30° abduction increased from 2.3° with 0-kg load to 4.1° with 4-kg load and on shoulders with symptomatic rotator cuff tears from 3.6° with 0-kg load to 6.5° with 4-kg load. Glenohumeral translation was influenced by the handheld weights only in shoulders with rotator cuff tendinopathy (P ≤ 0.020). Overall, superior glenohumeral translation during 30° abduction was approximately 1.0 mm with all loads. Conclusions: The results of glenohumeral translation comparable to control but greater scapular rotations during 30° abduction in the scapular plane in rotator cuff tears indicate that the scapula compensates for rotator cuff deficiency by rotating. Further analysis of load-dependent joint stability is needed to better understand glenohumeral and scapula motion. Level of evidence: Level 2. Companies are becoming increasingly aware of the health of their employees and are now integrating exoskeleton solutions for both prevention and job maintenance. However, the effect of using exoskeletons is still an open question. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of an active lumbar exoskeleton and its passive belt on trunk kinematics and muscle activity using instrumented motion analysis. Twenty-three healthy subjects volunteered to perform three handlings of a 5 kg load (free lifting, squat lifting, and load transfer) under three different experimental conditions. The "Control" condition was when the subject did not wear any device, the "Belt" condition was when the subject wore only the passive part of the exoskeleton, and the "Exo" condition was when the subject wore the active exoskeleton. Based on the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment scale, the exoskeleton reduced the time spent in angles that were considered dangerous for the back, according to ergonomic evaluations. Gait training to intentionally lengthen the nonparetic step length can increase the propulsive force of the paretic leg but may also induce overactivity of the knee extensor muscles that might limit knee flexion during the swing phase. Herein, we investigated the effects of lengthening the nonparetic step length during gait on the joint motion and muscle activity of the paretic lower limb. Fifteen chronic stroke patients (stroke group) and 15 healthy participants (control group) were evaluated for lower limb joint movements, electromyography, and spatiotemporal gait parameters during walking. Walking conditions were Normal (comfortable walking) and NP-Long/Contralateral-Long (walking with a lengthened step length of the nonmeasured limb). The trailing limb angle, a surrogate for propulsive forces, was increased in both groups by changing the step length, with no significant change in the peak knee flexion angle during the swing phase. However, the stroke group did not increase ankle plantar flexor activity in the stance phase or ankle dorsiflexion angle in the swing phase. Intentionally lengthening the nonparetic step length did not limit knee flexion. Purpose: In vivo studies of continuous lumbar sagittal plane motion have found passive intervertebral motion to be more uneven in patients with chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNSLBP) than healthy controls, but the mechanisms are unclear. This study aimed to compare patients with CNSLBP with a matched group of pain-free controls for intervertebral restraint during passive recumbent bending. Methods: Seventeen patients with CNSLBP and minimal disc degeneration who had quantitative fluoroscopy investigations were matched to 17 healthy controls from a database acquired using the same imaging protocol. The entire database (n = 136) was examined for clustering of peaking times, magnitudes and ROM of the first derivatives of the intervertebral angle/motion curves (PTFD, PMFD and ROM) during flexion and return that might introduce confounding. The groups were then compared for differences in these variables. Results: There were significant segmental ROM differences among clusters in the database when PMFD and ROM were used as clustering variables, indicating heterogeneity. However, in the patient–control study, it was PTFD (velocity) that differentiated the groups. At L5-S1, this was at 10.82% of the motion path compared with 25.06% in the controls (p = 0.0002). For L4-5, PTFD was at 23.42% of the motion path in patients and 16.33% in controls (p = 0.0694) suggesting a reduced initial bending moment there. There were no significant differences for PMFD or ROM. Conclusion: Peaking time of passive intervertebral velocity occurs early at L5-S1 in patients with CNSLBP; however, these findings should be treated with caution pending their replication. Anatolia is the global archetype of tectonic escape, as witnessed by the devastating 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquake sequence, and the 2020 Samos Earthquake, which show different kinematics related to the framework of the escape tectonics. Global Positioning System (GPS) motions of the wedge-shaped plate differ regionally from northwestwards to southwestwards (from east to west). Anatolia was extruded westward from the Arabian-Eurasian collision along the North and East Anatolian fault systems, rotating counterclockwise into the oceanic free-faces of the Mediterranean and Aegean, with dramatic extension of western Anatolia in traditional interpretations. However, which is the dominant mechanism for this change in kinematics, extrusion related to the Arabia/Eurasia collision or rollback of the African slab beneath western Anatolia is still unclear. To assess the dominant driving mechanisms across Anatolia, we analyze recent GPS velocity datasets, and decomposed them into N-S and E-W components, revealing that westward motion is essentially constant across the whole plate and consistent with the slip rates of the North and East Anatolia fault zones, while southward components increase dramatically in the transition area between central and western Anatolia, where a slab tear is suggested. This phenomenon is related to different tectonic driving mechanisms. The Arabia-Eurasia collision drives the Anatolian Plate uniformly westwards while western Anatolia is progressively more affected by the southward retreating African subducting slab west of the Aegean/Cypriot slab tear, which significantly increases the southward component of the velocity field and causes the apparent curve of the whole modern velocity field. The 2020 and 2023 earthquake focal mechanisms also confirm that the northward colliding Arabian Plate forced Anatolia to the west, and the retreating African slab is pulling the upper plate of western Anatolian apart in extension. We propose that the Anatolian Plate is moving westwards as one plate with an additional component of extension in its west caused by the local driving mechanism, slab rollback (with the boundary above the slab tear around Isparta), rather than separate microplates or a near-pole spin of the entire Anatolian Plate, and the collision-related extrusion is the dominant mechanism of tectonic escape.
