This study aimed to evaluate the immediate effect of Dynamic TapeTM (DT) on hip muscle activation and torque and on lower limb kinematics. Forty-five healthy, recreationally active women were randomly assigned to three groups: 1) submitted to the application of DT in the active form in the gluteus medius (GMed) muscle (BG; n = 15), 2) submitted to the application of DT in the placebo form in the GMed muscle (PG; n = 15), and 3) not submitted to any intervention (CG; n = 15). Participants were evaluated for GMed and gluteus maximus (GMax) muscle activation in a maximal voluntary isometric contraction, simultaneously with the assessment of the hip abductor and extensor torques, as well as during two functional tasks – single leg squat (SLS) and jump landing + maximum vertical jump (VJ) – simultaneously with a 2-D kinematic assessment of the lower limb. After DT application in BG, there was a significant decrease in the hip abductor time to peak torque (P = 0.004), hip extensor torque (P = 0.02), excursion to hip adduction (P = 0.007), and to knee flexion (P = 0.02) during the SLS, as well as in GMed activation during VJ (P < 0.05). We analyzed the effects of load magnitude and bar velocity variables on sensitivity to fatigue. Seventeen resistance-trained men (age=25.7±4.9 years; height=177.0±7.2 cm; body mass=77.7±12.3 kg; back-squat 1RM=145.0±33.9 kg; 1RM/body mass=1.86) participated in the study. Pre- and post-exercise changes in the mean propulsive velocity (MPV) and peak velocity (PV) in the back-squat at different intensities were compared with variations in the countermovement jump (CMJ). CMJ height decreased significantly from pre- to post-exercise (∆%=−7.5 to −10.4; p<0.01; ES=0.37 to 0.60). Bar velocity (MPV and PV) decreased across all loads (∆%=−4.0 to −12.5; p<0.01; ES=0.32 to 0.66). The decrease in performance was similar between the CMJ, MPV (40% and 80% 1RM; p=1.00), and PV (80% 1RM; p=1.00). The magnitude of reduction in CMJ performance was greater than MPV (60% 1RM; p=0.05) and PV (40% and 60% 1RM; p<0.01) at the post-exercise moment. Low systematic bias and acceptable levels of agreement were only found between CMJ and MPV at 40% and 80% 1RM (bias=0.35 to 1.59; ICC=0.51 to 0.71; CV=5.1% to 8.5%). These findings suggest that the back-squat at 40% or 80% 1RM using MPV provides optimal sensitivity to monitor fatigue through changes in bar velocity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In addition to pain, specific low back pain is frequently accompanied by restricted range of motion (ROM) during gait. To compare the behavior of kinematic and spatiotemporal gait parameters, pain, functional status, and self-efficacy, in patients with a diagnosis of herniated disk or lumbar stenosis undergoing surgery, in the pre- and postoperative periods of 1 and 6 months (PO6). Seven participants and 11 control subjects were assessed. A kinematics system comprising 10 optoelectronic cameras was used to assess gait. The Roland-Morris questionnaire, pain intensity, and self-efficacy, over three periods, were used. The ROM of the pelvis, hip, and knee of the hernia group presented an increase after surgery and the stenosis group presented a reduction of values in the hip. During the stance phase, the pelvis and hip ROM of both groups remained smaller than the control group. There was improvement in pain in individuals with hernia and stenosis (effect size = 0.6 and 0.8, respectively) in the three analyzed moments; for functional status there was improvement in the first postoperative period (ES = 0.4) compared to the preoperative in those individuals with hernia; and those with stenosis had improvement at PO6 when compared to the time before the surgery (ES = 0.2). Surgical intervention modifies the spatiotemporal parameters, the ROM of the pelvis, hip, and knee in the total gait cycle, primarily in the sagittal plane, and causes alterations, particularly in the hip joint, in these individuals during the support phase. Objectives: This study aimed to compare three-dimensional kinematic of the trunk, pelvis, hip, and knee during the single-leg squat and hip torque in individuals with and without isolated patellofemoral osteoarthritis (PFOA). Patients and methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated trunk, pelvis, hip, and knee kinematics at 30°, 45°, and 60° knee flexion during the single-leg squat using the Vicon motion capture and analysis system, the Nexus System 2.1.1, and 3D Motion Monitor software. Sixteen individuals (8 males, 8 females; mean age: 49.3±6.2 years; range 40 to 61 years) participated in the study, of which eight were PFOA patients and eight were healthy controls. Isometric hip abductor, extensor, and external rotator torques were evaluated using a handheld dynamometer. Results: The PFOA group exhibited greater hip adduction at 30° (p=0.008), 45° (p=0.005), and 60° (p=0.008) knee flexion in the descending phase of the single-leg squat, as well as at 60° (p=0.009) and 45° (p=0.03) knee flexion in the ascending phase. No significant differences were found between groups for other kinematic variables (p>0.05). The PFOA group exhibited lower isometric hip abductor (p=0.02), extensor (p<0.001), and external rotator (p=0.007) torques. Conclusion: Individuals with PFOA exhibited excessive hip adduction that could increase stress on the lateral patellofemoral joint at 30°, 45°, and 60° knee flexion during the single-leg squat and exhibited weakness of the hip abductors, extensors, and external rotators in comparison to healthy controls. Background: Occlusal interferences lead to changes in mandibular kinematics to compensate and improve function. However, the effects of different types of eccentric disturbance on the comminution capacity are not known. Objective: To determine the immediate effect of eccentric occlusal interferences on masticatory performance. Methods: This crossover clinical trial included 12 healthy dentate subjects aged 25.2 ± 3.3 years who were randomly submitted to seven types of occlusal interference: unilateral and bilateral laterotrusive and mediotrusive, protrusive, dummy and control (no interference). The interference forms were planned in a semi‐adjustable articulator, fabricated with composite resin and adhered to the mandibular first molars such that subjects' maximum intercuspation was maintained. Masticatory performance and the chewing rate during 20 cycles were evaluated during subjects' comminution of silicone test food under one interference condition per test day; the multiple sieve method was applied to the comminuted particles. The interference was removed upon test completion, and a 1‐week washout period was applied between tests. Results: Comminuted median particle sizes were larger under unilateral (4.94 ± 0.41 mm) and bilateral (4.81 ± 0.49 mm) laterotrusive, bilateral mediotrusive (4.65 ± 0.50 mm) and protrusive (4.83 ± 0.54 mm) interferences (p <.05) than under the control (4.01 ± 0.52 mm) and dummy (4.18 ± 0.58 mm) conditions (p <.05). Only unilateral and bilateral laterotrusive interferences narrowed the comminuted particle size dispersion (p <.05). The chewing rate did not differ among conditions (p =.1944). Conclusion: Artificial eccentric interferences had an immediate adverse effect on masticatory performance by resulting in larger comminuted particles. The Caçapava do Sul Granitic Complex is a ca. 30 km-long syntectonic batholith emplaced at 580-560 Ma along the N–S to NNE-SSW striking Caçapava do Sul Shear Zone, configuring the core of a double-plunging regional asymmetric antiformal fold, with the Passo Feio Metamorphic Complex metavolcanosedimentary wallrocks occurring at the fold limbs. Structural mapping and kinematic analysis along its whole margins allowed to subdivide the granite complex into seven structural domains, each with its own geometric characteristics and kinematics. The observed microstructures included abundant K-feldspar and plagioclase porphyroclasts with asymmetric recrystallization tails, S–C and S–C–C' fabrics, and more rarely synmagmatic fractures and asymmetrically developed myrmekites. In general, high temperature microstructures are abundant in the southern half of the granitic complex, while these features are overprinted by low temperature brittle-ductile to brittle microstructures in its northern half. The Southern Domain presents foliations with medium angle dip towards the south, high rake lineation towards the SSW and normal shear sense indicators. The Northwestern and Southwestern domains present mainly subvertical N–S striking foliations with sub-horizontal lineations mostly plunging towards SSW and abundant sinistral shear sense indicators. On the other hand, Southeastern and Santos Ferreira domains presents predominantly NE-SW striking foliations with variably dip and sub-horizontal lineations with abundant dextral shear sense indicators. The Northeastern Domain presents low angle foliation dipping towards the NE, which is also locally described in the Southeastern Domain. Dominantly normal movement with top to NE is described in the Northeastern Domain, also locally reported in the Southeastern Domain. The Northern Domain presents low-angle foliation dipping towards the N, with high rake lineation. No shear sense indicator was observed in the Northern Domain due to brittle deformation overprint, but normal kinematics is inferred. The opposite kinematics of the distinct Caçapava do Sul Shear Zone margins are corroborated by punctual data from the Passo Feio Metamorphic Complex rocks. This is compatibilized by the resultant syntectonic granite flow towards N/NE, which is interpreted in a model of oblique transpression with inclined ductile extrusion. The model suggests that transpression of the middle crust had an important pure shear component which was effectively partitioned into structural domains along the Caçapava do Sul Shear Zone in consequence of post-collisional syntectonic magmatism, and coexisted with extensional tectonics in the upper crust (Camaquã Basin) through a detachment along the brittle-ductile transition. • Caçapava do Sul Granitic Complex presents both dextral and sinistral kinematics. • Strain partitioning was effective due to syntectonic magmatism. • Dextral and sinistral shear sense in opposed zone margins due to ductile extrusion. • Post-collisional syntectonic magmatism led to ductile extrusion during transpression. • Oblique transpression with inclined ductile extrusion along a synmagmatic shear zone.
