Mounting climate concerns are making energy transition inevitable. Providing a reliable, cost-effective energy supply that meets the needs of all, as set up by Sustainable Development Goal 7, and promotes climate neutrality, as set up by the European Green Deal, is a complex task that requires complex and combined interventions in various sectors and policy areas. This paper aims to conduct a systematic analysis of the scholarly work focusing on energy transition towards renewables and to contribute to the existing knowledge by offering a holistic perspective on the dynamic landscape of energy transformation and the transition to renewables. To this end, advanced bibliometric techniques, combined with a systematic in-depth review of the existing literature and desk research, are used to uncover the intellectual landscape and identify influential works and emerging themes within this critical intersection of the economic, governance, political, social, and climate dimensions of energy transition. This analysis not only highlights prevailing trends and influential works but also sets the stage for future research and discussions critical to shaping the transition to renewable energy and policy actions in a rapidly evolving world. Renewable energy communities occupy a critical position in catalysing the energy transition within urban areas, while simultaneously making substantial contributions towards the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. Positive Energy Districts are also gaining momentum, emerging as a concept of growing interest among researchers and urban planners. Renewable energy communities and positive energy districts are both expressions of sustainable urban energy forms, yet there is the need to evaluate if a renewable energy community could be considered a positive energy district and under which conditions this transition will occur. To this end, a holistic framework examining the transition from existing renewable energy communities to positive energy districts is proposed and characterized by focused indicators, serving as critical instruments to conduct a tailored evaluation and characterization. The energy transition towards renewable sources represents a pivotal factor in pursuing sustainable development. This study reviews the impact of renewable energy on three aspects of sustainable development, namely economic, social, and environmental aspects in ASEAN. To quantify these aspects, GDP per capita proxies for the economic dimension, unemployment rates for the social dimension, and CO2 emissions for the environmental dimension. The data used is panel data of 10 ASEAN countries from 1996-2020. Pooled Mean Group (PMG) estimation technique is applied to identify the relationship between renewable energy and the dimensions of sustainable development. The study results reveal that renewable energy has a significant influence on sustainable development in the long run. Specifically, renewable energy is able to stimulate GDP per capita levels, thus potentially serving as a determinant of sustainable economic growth in ASEAN. Furthermore, the findings of this study suggest that renewable energy has the capacity to reduce CO2 emissions in the long run. Efforts to increase the share of renewable energy usage are needed to mitigate the risk of environmental degradation. However, it is noteworthy that our study underscores the adverse impact of the energy transition on the social dimension, as it can potentially drive-up unemployment rates in the long run. This impact can be attributed to labor market relocations and structural changes. Novice workers in the renewable energy sector may face the risk of displacement. Consequently, this study has implications that underscore the need for inclusive approaches to elevate the usage of renewable energy. Furthermore, a well-structured policy framework is needed to encourage more investments and prepare the competent workforce in the renewable energy sector.

The term sustainable energy is very familiar to all of us, yet its exact definition or meaning has so far been vague. To date, the widely adopted definition of sustainable energy has been inspired by the definition of sustainable development formulated more than 30 years ago in Our Common Future—the UN's Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development. The current definition conceals the true spirit of the report, and this has some ramifications. It raises the question as to whether we have put too much emphasis on attaining the future dimension of sustainability in the middle of a situation where energy survivability is in fact the real issue in many parts of the world. In this paper, the role of energy in sustaining the livelihoods of low-income communities is discussed. The existing definition of sustainable energy that the whole world seems to have embraced is looked at critically and its downsides exposed. The identified pillars of sustainable energy and the associated issues are discussed, and the need for an additional pillar, i.e., affordability, is discussed and called for. This paper will argue that the global definition of sustainable energy seems inappropriate and should be jettisoned, and a more realistic definition should be formulated, adopted, and embraced at the local (i.e., national or regional) level taking into account local attributes and factors. The current push for a transition from the reliance on conventional energy sources to "cleaner" energy sources (generally associated with renewable energy) has further exacerbated the issue of energy affordability that has made the conditions even more dire for so many groups of the world's population. In the midst of this situation, those who push for a rushed energy transition seem to be those who also produce an unsustainably high carbon footprint but who can easily offset their carbon footprint through the 'net-zero' concept. Ambitious climate and economic goals force the development of renewable energy sources, but they require legislative changes for the benefit of socially vulnerable consumers. This is important from the point of view of counteracting energy poverty. Energy transformation is not only a change in the fuel used, but most of all, the path and basis of low-carbon development that changes many socio-economic systems. The aim of this study is to link the development and environmental challenges in the studied subject matter with social challenges. The analyses show that it is necessary to strengthen the use of local energy potential and resources, and to activate local communities. The construction of nuclear power plants is also crucial. The results of the presented theoretical and empirical studies can be the basis for a revision of the energy policy in Poland in the area of the social dimension of the energy sector. Green hydrogen offers a promising solution to energy transition challenges. However, a comprehensive understanding of its scenario in Brazil is lacking, hampering the formulation of strategies to enhance domestic market competitiveness. This article identifies Brazil's panorama of green hydrogen, the barriers, drivers, and investment potential for developing this market. It also proposes strategies to stimulate the growth of this industry at the national level. Based on qualitative methods, including literature analysis and interviews with 17 experts, the study reveals that regulatory and political issues and infrastructure readiness necessitate collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors. Overcoming technical hurdles like cost-effective large-scale production and efficient storage demands research investments. Challenges like high production costs and an underdeveloped national industry impede market expansion. Green hydrogen potential as a clean energy carrier presents promising prospects in the fight against climate change. The most efficient method of producing decarbonized hydrogen is through electrolysis, which involves splitting water molecules using renewable sources of electricity. Morocco boasts various advantages that enable it to play a pivotal role in bringing this vision to fruition. Lately, the nation has devised an ambitious strategy for green hydrogen and implemented significant changes related to industry and water resource management. This document presents a thorough examination of Morocco's energy sector, with a special focus on the substantial hurdles that must be surmounted to establish an economy centered on green hydrogen, with the capacity to generate employment opportunities and achieve carbon neutrality. Numerous impediments require cooperation with Europe and other international allies to establish a green hydrogen industry in Morocco. • Sustainable development discourse has been dominated by individualist perspectives. • SDG 7 currently does not respond sufficiently to calls for energy justice by the Global Majority. • Sustainable development is tied to values, power dynamics and human perception. • The Zimbabwean case study shows that sustainable development must be transformative, not just utilitarian. • There is a need for relational Ubuntu-informed sustainable development. Globally, one Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 7) has gained currency as a lever for sustainability and a reference point for energy transition. That said, we know little about contested views of this goal. Thus, this paper explores competing views of experts versus communities. Further, we analyse alternative architectures of knowledge and practice that constitute different understandings of sustainable development. Drawing on qualitative research, it emerged that the elite (government authorities, NGOs and experts) are inclined to the hegemonic 'Western' and modernist view of sustainable development. On the other hand, communities contest this view arguing that sustainable development should be relational, context-dependent and shaped by their knowledge and culture. Relying on traditional biomass for cooking has become less common in many regions worldwide, however, most of the Sub-Sahara African population lacks access to clean cooking and still uses charcoal and firewood for cooking. Thus, seeking sustainable development in Sub-Sahara Africa regions would be hindered due to the consequences connected with replying on traditional cooking which leads to greenhouse gas emissions and environmental degradation, and resulting in high death rates each year. This study explores the potential and challenges of energy transition and household cooking sustainability enhancement in Sub-Sahara African regions. The results show that innovative solutions related to the improved cookstoves and renewable energy sources are emerging to address these challenges and pave the way for a more sustainable future. However, there are various factors hindering the implementation of these innovations, including cultural factors, financial aspects, awareness, technical and logistical barriers and policy frameworks. This study also identifies a link between households cooking sustainability and the potential of achieving numerous Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, the study highlights some examples of sustainability interventions to enhance the widespread adoption of sustainable cooking practices in Sub-Sahara Africa, including financial, technical innovations, policy support and research and development. Transitioning to sustainable energy is a global imperative for countries to develop policies to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7 and 13. Given the possible association between digital inclusion (DIGI) and the energy transition (EGTN), we examined the impact of DIGI on the EGTN while controlling for environmental taxes (ENTX) in the top-5 greenest economies in the world using quarterly data from 2001 to 2021. We examined the association at short-, medium-, and long-term frequencies using comprehensive approaches such as the Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR) for panel analysis and Wavelet techniques, i.e., wavelet coherence, multiple wavelet, and partial wavelet for country-specific assessment. According to the MMQR results, DIGI has a significant and positive effect on EGTN, with a coefficient value ranging from 10.95 to 5.980 while moving from lower (0.25) to higher (0.95) quantiles. Similarly, ENTX has a positive and significant effect on EGTN, with a coefficient value ranging from 1.770 to 3.132 as the quantiles increase. In addition, the results of wavelet coherence expose a strong and positive connectedness between DIGI and EGTN in each sample country. Furthermore, multiple wavelet results for each country demonstrated that ENTX significantly strengthens the interaction between DIGI and EGTN. Our findings result in developing SDGs-oriented policy guidelines, specifically the policy strategy for addressing SDG-7 and SDG-13.
