The challenges of the modern world require mobile robots with the ability to navigate in congested environments with high levels of manoeuvrability. Therefore, the Mecanum wheel may be viable for addressing this challenge. This paper presents the experimental results of a kinematic control strategy, which involves considering the dynamic model as a black box, with only the input and output signals being known. To do this, high‐level and low‐level controllers are formulated and explained. The high level aims to control the desired position of the mobile robot, which can be useful for navigation tasks. On the other hand, low‐level control involves nested controllers to regulate the speed of the mobile robot wheels. Both levels are related and computed through pure kinematics transformations with a dSPACE ds1103 card and MATLAB/Simulink software. In total, 120 experiments were conducted to determine the repeatability of the tests, using the combination of three widely explored control techniques in the literature: proportional‐integral‐derivative (PID), PID plus sliding modes, and PID plus quasi‐sliding modes. Hyper‐redundant manipulators have strong flexibility that benefits from their redundant limb structure. However, a large number of redundant degrees of freedom will also lead the solution of inverse kinematics much more difficult, which restricts their motion performance to some extent. Inspired by the FABRIK (Forward and Backward Reaching Inverse Kinematics) method, an improved inverse kinematics solution method for the hyper‐redundant manipulator is proposed. Based on the space vector method, the kinematic model of the manipulator is established to dynamically acquire its endpoint position, and the workspace is further obtained by using the Monte Carlo method. The original search method is optimized, the include angle decoupling mechanism between adjacent links is established to obtain the rotation angles of each joint, and the joint angle limitation is introduced to meet the actual manipulator structural restriction. On this basis, the pose constraint mechanism is established to realize the control of the end‐link pose, and the linear degree of freedom is introduced to realize the solution after the directional expansion of the manipulator's workspace. A series of simulation experiments are carried out. In the experiments, the position error of the manipulator's endpoint is always less than 10−6 mm. Meanwhile, the comparative experimental results show that compared with the original method, the proposed method exhibits higher position accuracy under the condition that the computation time is almost the same. In addition, in the end‐link pose constraint experiment and path motion experiments, the pose error of the end‐link is always less than 10−7°, indicating that the end‐link pose can also meet the high accuracy requirements under the premise of ensuring high position accuracy. In rivers worldwide, multiple scales of dunes coexist. It is unknown how the larger, primary dunes interact with secondary bedforms that are superimposed. We test the hypothesis that streamwise variability in the sediment flux inferred from the downstream migration of secondary bedforms explains migration of the host dune, based on bathymetric data from a lowland, sand‐bedded river. Results indicate that transport estimated from secondary bedform migration increases along the host dune stoss, eroding the stoss slope. When the superimposed bedforms disintegrate at the primary lee slopes, results indicate that all sediment transport associated to secondary bedform migration is arrested in the lee of the host dune, explaining migration of the host dune. When secondary dunes persist however, only part of the sediments transport linked to secondary dunes contributes to the migration of the host dune. This study gives novel insight into the fundamental mechanisms controlling the kinematics of compound dunes. They migrate downstream as a result of sediments moving from the stoss, the upstream facing slope of the dune, to the lee, the downstream slope of the dune. Sometimes, multiple scales of dunes coexist, where trains of small dunes travel over larger dunes. In this study we investigate how two dune scales interact and how they contribute to the downstream transport of bed sediments. This is done based on a series of field campaigns in the River Waal. The results indicate that migrating secondary dunes contribute to the displacement of the host dune, the dune over which they migrating. In some cases, secondary dunes travel over the host dune stoss and disintegrate at the host dune lee, depositing sediment there. In other cases, secondary dunes travel over the full length of the host dune toward the next, downstream dune. In this case, part of the sediments transport linked to the secondary dunes contributes to the downstream displacement of the host dune, and part of the sediments are transported to the next primary dune. Reconfigurable structures can perform multiple functions and are useful in confined environments with complicated access. To extend the complexity of configurations achievable with reconfigurable mechanisms, remotely reconfigurable mechanisms are explored. Magnetically responsive phase change materials are selected for actuation, and origami backbones as the structure. Modulating the mechanism's coupling and constraints, multiple configurations are achieved. Three functional aspects of in situ reconfiguration are demonstrated. First, selective attachment and actuation enable remote mechanisms to deploy and actuate. Second, reconfiguration that modifies the constraints allows for new kinematics even in confined environments. Third, the actuator can construct and change the configuration of an origami structure, allowing subsequent functions to emerge. Tetherless interface reconfiguration is demonstrated with an in situ needle puncture and escape room puzzle, which can benefit existing robotic applications in confined spaces. People with Parkinson's disease often exhibit improvements in motor tasks when exposed to external sensory cues. While the effects of different types of sensory cues on motor functions in Parkinson's disease have been widely studied, the underlying neural mechanism of these effects and the potential of sensory cues to alter the motor cortical activity patterns and functional connectivity of cortical motor areas are still unclear. This study aims to compare changes in oxygenated haemoglobin, deoxygenated haemoglobin and correlations among different cortical regions of interest during wrist movement under different external stimulus conditions between people with Parkinson's disease and controls. Ten Parkinson's disease patients and 10 age‐ and sex‐matched neurologically healthy individuals participated, performing repetitive wrist flexion and extension tasks under auditory and visual cues. Changes in oxygenated and deoxygenated haemoglobin in motor areas were measured using functional near‐infrared spectroscopy, along with electromyograms from wrist muscles and wrist movement kinematics. The functional near‐infrared spectroscopy data revealed significantly higher neural activity changes in the Parkinson's disease group's pre‐motor area compared to controls (p = 0.006), and functional connectivity between the supplementary motor area and pre‐motor area was also significantly higher in the Parkinson's disease group when external sensory cues were present (p = 0.016). These results indicate that external sensory cues' beneficial effects on motor tasks are linked to changes in the functional connectivity between motor areas responsible for planning and preparation of movements. Evidence has demonstrated that athletes exhibit superior cognitive performance associated with executive control. In the oculomotor system, this function has been examined using the interleaved pro‐saccade and anti‐saccade task (IPAST), wherein participants, prior to target appearance, are instructed to either automatically look at the peripheral target (pro‐saccade) or suppress the automatic response and voluntarily look in the opposite direction (anti‐saccade). While the IPAST has provided much insight into sensorimotor and inhibitory processing, it has yet to be performed in athletes. Moreover, limited research has examined saccade metrics in athletes. Here, we examined saccade latency and movement kinematics in the IPAST among athletes (N = 40) and nonathletes (NON) (N = 40). Higher direction error rates were obtained in the anti‐saccade compared to the pro‐saccade condition, with no differences between athletes and NON noted. Significantly faster saccade latencies were observed in athletes compared to NON in both conditions, in addition to faster pro‐saccades compared to anti‐saccades. Furthermore, athletes showed significantly higher frequencies and faster latencies of express saccades compared to NON in correct pro‐saccades. Additionally, athletes exhibited significantly faster latencies of express saccades compared to NON in erroneous anti‐saccades. Differences in saccade metrics between athletes and NON were not seen. Overall, these findings demonstrate that athletes display altered saccade performance likely associated with sensorimotor and preparatory processing, highlighting the potential of using IPAST to objectively investigate sensorimotor and cognitive functions in athletes. We explored the impact of running in the severe intensity domain on running mechanics and muscle oxygenation in competitive runners by investigating the relationship between mechanical deviations from typical stride characteristics and muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2) in the quadriceps muscle. Sixteen youth competitive runners performed an 8‐min exhaustive running test on an outdoor track. Running mechanics were continuously monitored using inertial measurement units. Rectus femoris SmO2 and total hemoglobin (a measure of blood volume) were continuously monitored by near‐infrared spectroscopy. One‐class support vector machine (OCSVM) modeling was employed for subject‐specific analysis of the kinematic data. Statistical analysis included principal component analysis, ANOVA, and correlation analysis. Mechanical deviations from typical stride characteristics increased as the running test progressed. Specifically, the percentage of outliers in the OCSVM model rose gradually from 2.2 ± 0.8% at the start to 43.6 ± 28.2% at the end (p < 0.001, mean ± SD throughout). SmO2 dropped from 74.3 ± 8.4% at baseline to 10.1 ± 6.8% at the end (p < 0.001). A moderate negative correlation (r = −0.61, p = 0.013) was found between the average SmO2 and the percentage of outlier strides during the last 15% of the run. During high‐intensity running, alterations in running biomechanics may occur, linked to decreased quadriceps muscle oxygenation. These parameters highlight the potential of using running kinematics and muscle oxygenation in training to optimize performance and reduce injury risks. This study aimed to compare performance, kinematic, and physiological variables between open water and pool swimming conditions in elite triathletes and to examine the associations between conditions on these variables. Fourteen elite triathletes (10 males and 4 females [23.4 ± 3.8 years]) performed two 1500‐m swimming tests in open water and in a 25‐m pool. Swimming speed, stroke rate (SR), length (SL) and index (SI), heart rate (HR), blood lactate concentrations [La−], and end‐exercise oxygen uptake (EEV̇O2) were assessed in both conditions. Lower SL and SI and higher SR were obtained in open water compared with pool swimming (p < 0.05). Moreover, kinematic variables changed as a function of distance in both conditions (p < 0.05). No differences were found in the main physiological variables (HR, [La−], and EEV̇O2) between conditions. Respiratory exchange ratio presented lower values in open water than in pool conditions (p < 0.05), while time constant was higher in open water (p = 0.032). The fastest triathletes in open water obtained the best performance in the pool (r = 0.958; p < 0.001). All kinematic variables, HR and peak [La−] presented positive associations between conditions (r > 0.6; p < 0.05). Despite physiological invariance, triathletes and coaches should monitor specific open water training to adapt their swimming technique to the competitive environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

How the neuromechanics of the lower limb functional muscle groups change with running speed remains to be fully elucidated, with implications for our understanding of human locomotion, conditioning, and injury prevention. This study compared the neuromechanics (ground reaction and joint kinetics, kinematics and muscle activity) of middle‐distance athletes running on an instrumented treadmill at six wide‐ranging speeds (2.78–8.33 m·s−1). Ground reaction forces and kinematics were analyzed using inverse dynamics to calculate flexor and extensor joint torques, and positive and negative work done by these torques. Contributions of each functional muscle group to the total positive and negative work done by the limb during stance, swing, and the whole stride were quantified. During stance, the ankle plantar flexors were the major energy generator and absorber (>60%) at all speeds, but their contribution to whole stride energy generation and absorption declined with speed. Positive work by the hip extensors rose superlinearly with speed during stance (3‐fold) and especially during swing (12‐fold), becoming the biggest energy generator across the whole stride at >5 m·s−1. Knee flexor and extensor negative work also rose superlinearly with speed during swing, with the knee flexors becoming the greatest energy absorber over the whole stride at >7.22 m·s−1. Across speeds, plantar flexor peak moment and positive work accounted for 97% and 96% of the variance in step length, and swing hip extension peak moment and positive work accounted for 98% and 99% of the variance in step frequency. There were pronounced speed, phase (stance/swing), and work (positive/negative) dependent contributions of the different functional muscle groups during running, with extensive implications for conditioning and injury prevention. Hierarchical models have been proposed to explain how the brain encodes actions, whereby different areas represent different features, such as gesture kinematics, target object, action goal, and meaning. The visual processing of action‐related information is distributed over a well‐known network of brain regions spanning separate anatomical areas, attuned to specific stimulus properties, and referred to as action observation network (AON). To determine the brain organization of these features, we measured representational geometries during the observation of a large set of transitive and intransitive gestures in two independent functional magnetic resonance imaging experiments. We provided evidence for a partial dissociation between kinematics, object characteristics, and action meaning in the occipito‐parietal, ventro‐temporal, and lateral occipito‐temporal cortex, respectively. Importantly, most of the AON showed low specificity to all the explored features, and representational spaces sharing similar information content were spread across the cortex without being anatomically adjacent. Overall, our results support the notion that the AON relies on overlapping and distributed coding and may act as a unique representational space instead of mapping features in a modular and segregated manner. This study investigated the effects of plyometric training on lower‐limb muscle strength and knee biomechanical characteristics during the landing phase. Twenty‐four male subjects were recruited for this study with a randomised controlled design. They were randomly divided into a plyometric training group and a traditional training group and underwent training for 16 weeks. Each subject was evaluated every 8 weeks for knee and hip isokinetic muscle strength as well as knee kinematics and kinetics during landing. The results indicated significant group and time interaction effects for knee extension strength (F = 74.942 and p = 0.001), hip extension strength (F = 99.763 and p = 0.000) and hip flexion strength (F = 182.922 and p = 0.000). For landing kinematics, there were significant group main effects for knee flexion angle range (F = 4.429 and p = 0.047), significant time main effects for valgus angle (F = 6.502 and p = 0.011) and significant group and time interaction effects for internal rotation angle range (F = 5.475 and p = 0.008). The group main effect for maximum knee flexion angle was significant (F = 7.534 and p = 0.012), and the group and time interaction effect for maximum internal rotation angle was significant (F = 15.737 and p = 0.001). For landing kinetics, the group main effect of the loading rate was significant (F = 4.576 and p = 0.044). Significant group and time interaction effects were observed for knee extension moment at the moment of maximum vertical ground reaction force (F = 5.095 and p = 0.010) and for abduction moment (F = 8.250 and p = 0.001). These findings suggest that plyometric training leads to greater improvements in hip and knee muscle strength and beneficial changes in knee biomechanics during landing compared to traditional training. We examined performance across one menstrual cycle (MC) and 3 weeks of hormonal contraceptives (HC) use to identify whether known fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone/progestin are associated with functional performance changes. National Rugby League Indigenous Women's Academy athletes [n = 11 naturally menstruating (NM), n = 13 using HC] completed performance tests [countermovement jump (CMJ), squat jump (SJ), isometric mid‐thigh pull, 20 m sprint, power pass and Stroop test] during three phases of a MC or three weeks of HC usage, confirmed through ovulation tests alongside serum estrogen and progesterone concentrations. MC phase or HC use did not influence jump height, peak force, sprint time, distance thrown or Stroop effect. However, there were small variations in kinetic and kinematic CMJ/SJ outputs. NM athletes produced greater mean concentric power in MC phase four than one [+0.41 W·kg−1 (+16.8%), p = 0.021] during the CMJ, alongside greater impulse at 50 ms at phase one than four [+1.7 N·s (+4.7%), p = 0.031] during the SJ, without differences between tests for HC users. Among NM athletes, estradiol negatively correlated with mean velocity and power (r = −0.44 to −0.50, p < 0.047), progesterone positively correlated with contraction time (r = 0.45, p = 0.045), and both negatively correlated with the rate of force development and impulse (r = −0.45 to −0.64, p < 0.043) during the SJ. During the CMJ, estradiol positively correlated to 200 ms impulse (r = 0.45, p = 0.049) and progesterone to mean power (r = 0.51, p = 0.021). Evidence of changes in testing performance across a MC, or during active HC use, is insufficient to justify "phase‐based testing"; however, kinetic or kinematic outputs may be altered in NM athletes. In carpometacarpal osteoarthritis (CMC OA) of the thumb, to what extent treatments should be directed by radiographic disease severity versus pain‐based indicators remains an open question. To address this gap, this study investigated the relative impact of disease severity and pain severity on the range of motion in participants with CMC OA. We hypothesized larger differences would exist between extremes in the pain severity cohort than the disease severity cohort, suggesting pain modulates movement to a greater extent than joint degradation. Thirty‐one female participants (64.6 ± 10.9 years) were grouped as symptomatic or asymptomatic (pain severity cohort) and early stage OA or end‐stage OA (disease severity cohort) using radiographs and questionnaires. Kinematics were measured during single‐planar and multiplanar range of motion tasks. Joint angle differences between groups were statistically compared. Differences in self‐reported pain, function, and disability were evident in both participant cohorts. Notably, substantial distinctions emerged exclusively during multiplanar tasks, with a greater prevalence in the disease severity cohort compared to the pain severity cohort. Participants with end‐stage OA also exhibited similar overall area covered during circumduction in comparison to those with early‐stage OA, despite having a decreased range of motion at the CMC joint. The study underscores the importance of assessing multiplanar tasks, potentially leading to earlier identification of CMC OA. While movement compensations such as employing the distal thumb joints over the CMC joint were observed, delving deeper into the interplay between pain and movement could yield greater insight into the underlying factors steering these compensatory mechanisms. Despite the ubiquity of eddies at the Mid‐Atlantic Bight shelf‐break front, direct observations of frontal eddies at the shelf‐break front are historically sparse and their biological impact is mostly unknown. This study combines high resolution physical and biological snapshots of two frontal eddies with an idealized 3‐D regional model to investigate eddy formation, kinematics, upwelling patterns, and biological impacts. During May 2019, two eddies were observed in situ at the shelf‐break front. Each eddy showed evidence of nutrient and chlorophyll enhancement despite rotating in opposite directions and having different physical characteristics. Our results suggest that cyclonic eddies form as shelf waters are advected offshore and slope waters are advected shoreward, forming two filaments that spiral inward until sufficient water is entrained. Rising isohalines and upwelled slope water dye tracer within the model suggest that upwelling coincided with eddy formation and persisted for the duration of the eddy. In contrast, anticyclonic eddies form within troughs of the meandering shelf‐break front, with amplified frontal meanders creating recirculating flow. Upwelling of subsurface shelf water occurs in the form of detached cold pool waters during the formation of the anticyclonic eddies. The stability properties of each eddy type were estimated via the Burger number and suggest different ratios of baroclinic versus barotropic contributions to frontal eddy formation. Our observations and model results indicate that both eddy types may persist for more than a month and upwelling in both eddy types may have significant impacts on biological productivity of the shelf break. In situ observations of the physical and biological characteristics of these eddies are relatively scarce. Satellite data indicate that neither of the two types of eddies are rare, indicating a potential for frontal eddies to significantly influence biological communities near the front. The rotary jet spinning process involves the joint action of centrifugal force, gravity, temperature, humidity, and flow fields on the spinning solution. The solution is ejected through the nozzle after flowing from the storage container and stretched in the air to form a composite fiber. At present, the investigation of rotary jet composite spinning primarily focused on the dynamics and kinematics of the spinning solution and jet within the container. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive exploration into the motion and slip phenomena exhibited by the composite spinning solution in air. This article investigates the slip phenomenon between the polymer and the gas contact surface after the spinning solution leaves the spinneret aperture. A slip model is established to analyze the motion and force of the polymer in air. Meanwhile, a mathematical model for the evaporation rate of composite spinning solution motion under the influence of multi‐field coupling is established through theoretical analysis. A numerical simulation of the rotary jet spinning process was conducted to obtain clouds of jet exit velocity. The morphology of composite fibers produced by rotary jet spinning was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, enabling a comparison of diameter distribution and surface quality under different environmental and equipment parameters. Objectives: To evaluate the effects of treatment of bilateral posterior crossbite (BPXB) on mandibular kinematics by the percentage of reverse chewing cycles (RCCs) during soft and hard bolus chewing before and after the correction of the malocclusion with function‐generating bite (FGB). Materials and Methods: This prospective study included 71 subjects: 19 patients with occlusally symmetric BPXB (M = 9; F = 10; mean age 9.3 ± 2.2[yr.mo]), 32 patients with occlusally asymmetric BPXB (19 with more teeth in crossbite on the right side (right prevalent side), M = 7; F = 12; mean age 8.2 ± 1.6 [yr.mo] and 13 on the left side, M = 7; F = 6; mean age 9.6 ± 1.9 [yr.mo]) and 20 controls without malocclusion (M = 8; F = 12; mean age 10.2 ± 1.7 [yr.mo]). Masticatory patterns were recorded before (T0) and after (T1) the correction of the malocclusion with FGB, with the K7‐I® kinesiograph using standardized soft and hard boluses. Results: BPXB was corrected in all included patients. At T0, the percentage of RCCs in BPXB was significantly increased compared to controls (P <.0001); symmetric BPXB showed no difference in RCCs between the sides, whereas asymmetric BPXB showed significantly more RCCs on the side with more teeth in crossbite (prevalent side). After treatment with FGB (T1), the percentage of RCCs was significantly reduced in both symmetric BPXB patients (soft bolus, P =.003; hard bolus, P <.001) and asymmetric BPXB patients (prevalent side: soft and hard bolus, P <.00001; non‐prevalent side: soft bolus, P =.01 and hard bolus, P =.0002). An extended two‐dimensional (2D) elasticity theory based on the weighted residual concept is developed in an attempt to capture thickness effects in vibrating thick plates. Plate theories can only provide approximate solutions due to certain kinematics assumptions. The weighting functions are expressed in terms of Legendre orthogonal polynomials. A formulation in rectangular Cartesian coordinates serves as the basis for an implementation of the finite element method. The applicability of the extended 2D elasticity theory is demonstrated through examples of rectangular, thick plates with different aspect ratios, thickness ratios, and boundary conditions. The accuracy of the extended 2D elasticity theory is assessed through a three‐dimensional finite element analysis. This study assessed the ability of Twisted File Adaptive (TFA), TruNatomy (TRN) and VDW.Rotate (VR) instruments activated by continuous rotation (CR) and adaptive motion (AM) to shape curved root canals. Thirty mandibular molars with two separate mesial canals 20°–40° curved were collected and scanned using micro‐computed tomography (μCT). The canals were then randomly assigned into six groups (n = 10): TRN, VR or TFA instruments activated by CR or AM. TRN groups 17.02, 20.04 and 26.04; VR groups 15.04, 20.05 and 25.06; TFA groups were shaped consecutively using 15K‐file, 20.04 and 25.06. After they were shaped, the canals were scanned again. The volume of removed dentin, canal transportation and centring ratio were calculated μCT images. All data were analysed using the Kruskal–Wallis test or one‐way analysis of variance (p < 0.05). With both kinematics, the TRN instrument removed the least amount of dentin, the VR‐CR and the TFA‐AM removed the most (p < 0.05). The transportation and centring ratios among all groups were similar (p > 0.05). The volume of dentin removed, the diameter or design features of the instruments and different kinematics did not affect the centring ratio and the amount of transportation and remained within safe limits. Extensive researches have been conducted on the relationship between surface deformation and the properties of upper crust. However, the link between surface deformation and lower crustal rheology, especially in a three‐dimensional context, remains unclear. In this study, we utilize sandbox modeling to investigate the impact of lower crustal rheology on surface deformation during oblique extension. Under the same conditions, six models with different lower crustal viscosities, both with and without syn‐kinematic deposits, are conducted. The results indicate that a decrease in lower crustal viscosity may contribute to an increase in: (a) graben width, (b) graben length, (c) graben spacing, (d) the number of isolated rifts and (e) topographic relief of oblique extensional systems, while also leading to a reduction in the total number of grabens. Notably, there exists a negative linear correlation between graben spacing and lower crustal viscosity. In map view, the angle between fault strike and the direction of pre‐existing discontinuities increases as the viscosity of the lower crust decreases. Furthermore, the frequency of large rakes (>50°) decreases with decreasing lower crustal viscosity. These findings align with natural examples such as the East African Rift System, Weihe Graben and the South Tibetan Rift in terms of geomorphology, tectonics, and crustal rheology. Through a comprehensive comparison of the graben width, spacing, and the angle between fault strike and the direction of pre‐existing discontinuities, our study provides valuable insights into the rheology of the lower crust in natural settings. The collisional Iranian Plateau and its recent kinematic evolution represent a natural example to study the intraplate response to the transferred deformation from an active convergent plate margin. The late Cenozoic deformation and structural evolution of the Plateau is not well understood. Here, we integrate structural, tectonostratigraphic, and morphotectonic field observations with low‐temperature thermochronometric data along the NW‐SE trending Kushk‐e‐Nosrat (KN) Fault to unravel the exhumation history and the kinematic change at the northwestern boundary of the Iranian Plateau. We found different sets of strike‐slip related structures along the KN Fault zone, which are classified into four categories based on their cross‐cutting relations and the superimposition of kinematic indicators. These include dextral transtension, dextral, dextral transpression, and sinistral kinematics. The unreset zircon (U‐Th)/He and apatite fission track results and the reset apatite (U‐Th)/He data from the restraining area along the KN Fault suggest 80–60°C of cooling during the early Miocene (∼20–18 Ma) and late Miocene–early Pliocene (∼7–5 Ma) due to dextral and dextral transpressional kinematics along the KN Fault zone, respectively. The dextral transtentional faulting was recorded as deposition of the Qom Formation within the releasing overlap areas along the KN Fault at >20–18 Ma. The kinematics of the KN Fault changed to sinistral during Pliocene–Quaternary times presumably triggered by the simultaneous clockwise rotation of central Iran, Alborz Mountains, and the South Caspian block. Our study proposes that the morphological and tectonostratigraphic evolution of the northern margin of the Iranian Plateau has mainly been controlled through local uplift and exhumation in restraining areas and local thick deposition in releasing areas of the major strike‐slip faults during the late Cenozoic time. Plain Language Summary: The collision between Arabia and Eurasia caused not only deformation at the collision front but also hundreds of kilometers far away in the plate's interior. This collisional process led to the formation of the highly elevated Iranian Plateau. In this study, we investigate the deformation history along the northern margin of the plateau, which is characterized by large strike‐slip faults. We present new data collected in the field along the >150 km long Kushk‐e‐Nosrat Fault Zone to reveal the various changes in strike‐slip deformation. The accommodation of the substantial eastward crustal motion of the Bayan Har block characterizes the dynamics of faults located at the eastern Tibetan Plateau. However, uncertainties persist concerning the manner and amount of deformation distributed on these faults, with slip senses and rates constituting critical factors. In the northeastern segment of the Longmenshan thrust zone, the contentious activity and the unknown geologic slip rate present challenges. This study, focusing on the Qingchuan fault, the predominant fault within the northeastern Longmenshan, employed satellite imagery interpretation, displaced fluvial terraces surveying, displacement measurements, and chronological analysis to comprehensively characterize its fault activity. Our investigation robustly demonstrates the Qingchuan fault has been active since the late Quaternary, and is primarily marked with a pronounced dextral slip at a rate of 0.6–1.0 mm/year. By quantitatively assessing the deformation rates of the faults at the eastern Tibetan Plateau, we propose that they sufficiently accommodate the entire eastward crustal movement of the Bayan Har block; thereby no additional deformation propagates beyond the Qingchuan fault. Furthermore, we introduce a subblock model to elucidate the regional crustal deformation pattern, wherein the eastward movement of the Bayan Har block transfers to the northeastward movement of the Bikou subblock. This movement results in reverse slip patterns for the Minjiang and Huya faults, while the Beichuan and Qingchuan faults predominantly experience dextral displacements. The complex strain partitioning within the northern Longmenshan range underscores the observed variations in slip patterns across different segments of the Longmenshan thrust zone, advancing our understanding of fault behavior and the orchestration of crustal deformation in this intricate tectonic framework. ABSTRACT Anguilliform swimmers are long and narrow animals that propel themselves by undulating their bodies. Observations in nature and recent investigations suggest that anguilliform swimming is highly efficient. However, understanding the underlying reasons for the efficiency of this type of locomotion requires interdisciplinary studies spanning from biology to hydrodynamics. Regrettably, these different fields are rarely discussed together, which hinders our ability to understand the repeated evolution of this swimming mode in vertebrates. This review compiles the current knowledge of the anatomical features that drive anguilliform swimming, compares the resulting kinematics across a wide range of anguilliform swimmers, and describes the resulting hydrodynamic interactions using data from both in vivo experiments and computational studies. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) are effective surgeries to treat end‐stage knee osteoarthritis. Clinicians assume that TKA alters knee kinematics while UKA preserves native knee kinematics; however, few studies of in vivo kinematics have evaluated this assumption. This study used biplane radiography to compare side‐to‐side tibiofemoral kinematics during chair rise, stair ascent, and walking in 16 patients who received either TKA or UKA. We hypothesized that TKA knees would have significant kinematic changes and increased asymmetry with the contralateral knee, while UKA knee kinematics would not change after surgery and preoperative knee symmetry would be maintained. Native bone and implant motion were tracked using a volumetric model‐based tracking technique. Six degrees of freedom kinematics were calculated throughout each motion. Kinematics were compared between the operated and contralateral knees pre‐ and post‐surgery using a linear mixed‐effects model. TKA knees became less varus with the tibia more medial, posterior, and distal relative to the femur. UKA knees became less varus with the tibia less lateral on average. Postoperative TKA knees were in less varus than UKA knees on average and at low flexion angles, with an internally rotated tibia during chair rise and stair ascent. At high flexion angles, the tibia was more medial and posterior after TKA than UKA. Side‐to‐side kinematic symmetry worsened after TKA but was maintained or improved after UKA. Greater understanding of kinematic differences between operated and contralateral knees after surgery may help surgeons understand why some patients remain unsatisfied with their new knees. In the humanoid robots, waist mechanism is an important structure to realize the whole body coordinated movement. This paper proposes a series–parallel mechanism of waist structure, and its kinematics and dynamics characteristics are studied. Based on the dynamic model, a backstepping sliding mode controller is designed to simulate control performance. Under the continuous disturbance force, the stability and accuracy of the mechanism are verified. Compared with the experiment, the results prove that the waist mechanism has the biomimetic spine movements and desired control performance, which can be applied to life support robots in the future. Objectives: An accident during arboreal locomotion can lead to risky falls, but it remains unclear that the extent to which primates, as adept arborealists, change their locomotion in response to the perceived risk of moving on high supports in the tree canopy. By using more stable forms of locomotion on higher substrates, primates might avoid potentially fatal consequences. Materials and Methods: Using high‐speed cameras, we recorded the quadrupedal locomotion of four wild lemur species—Eulemur rubriventer, Eulemur rufifrons, Hapalemur aureus, and Lemur catta (N = 113 total strides). We quantified the height, diameter, and angular orientation of locomotor supports using remote sensors and tested the influence of support parameters on gait kinematics, specifically predicting that in response to increasing substrate height, lemurs would decrease speed and stride frequency, but increase stride length and the mean number of supporting limbs. Results: Lemurs did not adjust stride frequency on substrates of varying height. Adjustments to speed, stride length, and the mean number of supporting limbs in response to varying height often ran counter to predictions. Only E. rubriventer decreased speed and increased the mean number of supporting limbs on higher substrates. Discussion: Results suggest that quadrupedal walking is a relatively safe form of locomotion for lemurs, requiring subtle changes in gait to increase stability on higher—that is, potentially riskier—substrates. Continued investigation of the impact of height on locomotion will be important to determine how animals assess risk in their environment and how they choose to use this information to move more safely. Injury surveillance data indicate that collegiate athletes are at greater risk for lower extremity (LE) injuries following sports‐related concussion (SRC). While the association between SRC and LE injury appears to be clinically relevant up to 1‐year post‐SRC, little evidence has been provided to determine possible mechanistic rationales. Thus, we aimed to compare collegiate athletes with a history of SRC to matched controls on biomechanical and cognitive performance measures associated with LE injury risk. Athletes with a history of SRC (n = 20) and matched controls (n = 20) performed unanticipated bilateral land‐and‐cut tasks and cognitive assessments. Group‐based analyses (ANOVA) and predictive modeling (C5.0 decision tree algorithm) were used to compare group differences on biomechanical and cognitive measures. Collegiate athletes with a history of SRC demonstrated approximately six degrees less peak knee flexion on both dominant (p = 0.03, d = 0.71) and nondominant (p = 0.02, d = 0.78) limbs during the land‐and‐cut tasks compared to controls. Verbal Memory, knee flexion, and Go/No Go total score (C5.0 decision tree algorithm) were identified as the strongest indicators of previous SRC injury history. Reduced knee flexion during sport‐specific land‐and‐cut tasks may be a mechanism for increased LE injury risk in athletes with a history of SRC. There appears to be multiple biomechanical and cognitive predictors for identifying previous SRC in collegiate athletes, providing evidence to support a multifactorial SRC management strategy to reduce future injury risk. Quantifying movement coordination in cross‐country (XC) skiing, specifically the technique with its elemental forms, is challenging. Particularly, this applies when trying to establish a bidirectional transfer between scientific theory and practical experts' knowledge as expressed, for example, in ski instruction curricula. The objective of this study was to translate 14 curricula‐informed distinct elements of the V2 ski‐skating technique (horizontal and vertical posture, lateral tilt, head position, upper body rotation, arm swing, shoulder abduction, elbow flexion, hand and leg distance, plantar flexion, ski set‐down, leg push‐off, and gliding phase) into plausible, valid and applicable measures to make the technique training process more quantifiable and scientifically grounded. Inertial measurement unit (IMU) data of 10 highly experienced XC skiers who demonstrated the technique elements by two extreme forms each (e.g., anterior versus posterior positioning for the horizontal posture) were recorded. Element‐specific principal component analyses (PCAs)—driven by the variance produced by the technique extremes—resulted in movement components that express quantifiable measures of the underlying technique elements. Ten measures were found to be sensitive in distinguishing between the inputted extreme variations using statistical parametric mapping (SPM), whereas for four elements the SPM did not detect differences (lateral tilt, plantar flexion, ski set‐down, and leg push‐off). Applicability of the established technique measures was determined based on quantifying individual techniques through them. The study introduces a novel approach to quantitatively assess V2 ski‐skating technique, which might help to enhance technique feedback and bridge the communication gap that often exists between practitioners and scientists. Talonavicular (TN) fusion is a common treatment for TN arthritis or deformity correction. There is incongruous evidence regarding remaining motion at the talocalcaneal and calcaneocuboid joints after TN fusion. Additionally, the effects of a malaligned TN fusion are not well understood and alignment of the fusion may be important for overall foot integrity. This project assessed the kinematic and kinetic effects of neutral and malaligned TN fusions. Ten cadaveric feet were tested on a gait simulator in four conditions: unfused, fused in neutral, fused in varus, and fused in valgus. The fusions were simulated with external fixation hardware. An eight‐camera motion analysis system and a 10‐segment foot model generated kinematic data, and a pressure mat captured pressure data. Simulated TN fusion was achieved in eight feet. From unfused to fused‐neutral, range of motion (ROM) was not eliminated in the adjacent joints, but the positions of the joints changed significantly throughout stance phase. Furthermore, the ROM increased at the tibiotalar joint. Plantar pressure and center of pressure shifted laterally with neutral fusion. The malalignments marginally affected the ROM but changed joint positions throughout stance phase. Pressure patterns were shifted laterally in varus malalignment and medially in valgus malalignment. The residual motion and the altered kinematics at the joints in the triple joint complex after TN fusion may subsequently increase the incidence of arthritis. This study compared the joint kinematics between the front squat (FS) conducted in the upright (natural gravity) position and in the supine position on a short arm human centrifuge (SAHC). Male participants (N = 12) with no prior experience exercising on a centrifuge completed a FS in the upright position before (PRE) and after (POST) a FS exercise conducted on the SAHC while exposed to artificial gravity (AG). Participants completed, in randomized order, three sets of six repetitions with a load equal to body weight or 1.25 × body weight for upright squats, and 1 g and 1.25 g at the center of gravity (COG) for AG. During the terrestrial squats, the load was applied with a barbell. Knee (left/right) and hip (left/right) flexion angles were recorded with a set of inertial measurement units. AG decreased the maximum flexion angle (MAX) of knees and hips as well as the range of motion (ROM), both at 1 and 1.25 g. Minor adaptation was observed between the first and the last repetition performed in AG. AG affects the ability to FS in naïve participants by reducing MAX, MIN and ROM of the knees and hip. Background: Quantitative 3D movement analysis using inertial measurement units (IMUs) allows for a more detailed characterization of motor patterns than clinical assessment alone. It is essential to discriminate between gait features that are responsive or unresponsive to current therapies to better understand the underlying pathophysiological basis and identify potential therapeutic strategies. Objectives: This study aims to characterize the responsiveness and temporal evolution of different gait subcomponents in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients in their OFF and various ON states following levodopa administration, utilizing both wearable sensors and the gold‐standard MDS‐UPDRS motor part III. Methods: Seventeen PD patients were assessed while wearing a full‐body set of 15 IMUs in their OFF state and at 20‐minute intervals following the administration of a supra‐threshold levodopa dose. Gait was reconstructed using a biomechanical model of the human body to quantify how each feature was modulated. Comparisons with non‐PD control subjects were conducted in parallel. Results: Significant motor changes were observed in both the upper and lower limbs according to the MDS‐UPDRS III, 40 minutes after levodopa intake. IMU‐assisted 3D kinematics detected significant motor alterations as early as 20 minutes after levodopa administration, particularly in upper limbs metrics. Although all "pace‐domain" gait features showed significant improvement in the Best‐ON state, most rhythmicity, asymmetry, and variability features did not. Conclusion: IMUs are capable of detecting motor alterations earlier and in a more comprehensive manner than the MDS‐UPDRS III. This study explores the impact of feathers on the hydrodynamic drag experienced by diving birds, which is critical to their foraging efficiency and survival. Employing a novel experimental approach, we analyzed the kinematics of both feathered and nonfeathered projectiles during their transition from air to water using high‐speed imaging and an onboard accelerometer. The drag coefficients were determined through two methods: a direct calculation from the acceleration data and a theoretical approach fitted to the observed velocity profiles. Our results indicate that feathers significantly increase the drag force during water entry, with feathered projectiles exhibiting approximately double the drag coefficient of their smooth counterparts. These findings provide new insights into the role of avian feather morphology in diving mechanics and have potential implications for the design of bioinspired aquatic vehicles in engineering. The study also discusses the biological implications of increased drag due to feathers and suggests that factors such as body shape might play a more critical role in the diving capabilities of birds than previously understood. The moth fly, Clogmia albipunctata, is a common synanthropic insect with a worldwide range that lives in nearly any area with moist, decaying organic matter. These habitats comprise both smooth, slippery substrates (e.g., bathroom drains) and heterogeneous, bumpy ground (e.g., soil in plant pots). By using terrain of varying levels of roughness, we focus specifically on how substrate roughness at the approximate size scale of the organism affects kinematics and coordination in adult moth flies. Background: Upper oesophageal sphincter (UES) serves as an important anatomical and functional landmark during swallowing. However, the precise UES location before and during swallowing has not been well established. Objective: This study aimed to determine upper oesophageal sphincter (UES) location and displacement during swallowing accounting for sex, age, and height in healthy adults using 320‐row area detector computed tomography (320‐ADCT). Methods: Ninety‐four healthy adults (43 males; 22–90 years) underwent 320‐ADCT scanning while swallowing one trial of 10 mL honey thick barium. UES location at bolus hold and at maximum displacement and vertical displacement during swallowing were identified using the coordinates and the section classification of vertebrae (VERT scale). The differences and correlations of UES location and distance in terms of sex, age, and height were analysed using Mann–Whitney U test and Spearman's correlation coefficient. Results: UES locations at bolus hold and at maximum displacement were significantly lower and UES vertical displacement was significantly larger in males than in females (p <.001). UES location at bolus hold became lower with increasing age (r = −.312, p =.002), but the negative correlation was low at maximum displacement (r = −.230, p =.026), resulting in larger vertical distance with ageing. UES locations showed high negative correlation at bolus hold with height (r = −.715, p <.001), and showed moderate negative correlation at maximum displacement with height (r = −.555, p <.001), although this effect was unclear when analysed by sex. Conclusion: Males showed lower UES location and larger displacement than females. The impact of age was evident with lower location before swallowing and larger displacement during swallowing. Purpose: Radial head arthroplasty (RHA) reestablishes elbow stability after complex radial head fracture, but complication rates are high, possibly due to inappropriate implant sizing. Knowledge of impact of radial head implant diameter on elbow kinematics is limited and warranted. This study evaluated elbow kinematics of different radial head implant diameters after RHA using dynamic radiostereometric analysis (dRSA). Methods: Eight human donor arms were examined with dRSA during elbow flexion with the forearm in unloaded neutral position, and in supinated‐ and pronated position without and with 10N either varus or valgus load, respectively. Elbow kinematics were examined before and after RHA with head diameters of anatomical size, −2 mm (undersized), and +2 mm (oversized). The ligaments were kept intact by use of step‐cut humerus osteotomy for repeated RHA exchange. Bone models were obtained from CT, and by AutoRSA software bone models were matched with dRSA recordings. The elbow kinematics were described using anatomical coordinate systems. Results: Compared to the native radial head during elbow flexion, the anatomical sized RHA shifted 2.0 mm in ulnar direction during unloaded pronated forearm position. The undersized RHA shifted 1.5 mm in posterior direction and 2.1 mm in ulnar direction during unloaded pronated forearm position and increased the varus angle by 2.4° during supinated loaded forearm position. The oversized RHA shifted 1.6 mm in radial direction during loaded supinated forearm position. Conclusions: The anatomically sized RHA should be preferred as it maintained native elbow kinematics the best. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the intraoperative knee kinematics of cruciate‐retaining total knee arthroplasty with a medial stabilising technique (MST‐TKA) and compare the kinematics between mobile‐ and fixed‐bearing MST‐TKAs. We hypothesised that mobile‐bearing MST‐TKA would result in greater physiological kinematic motion than fixed‐bearing MST‐TKA. Methods: Twenty‐one and 20 knees underwent mobile‐ and fixed‐bearing MST‐TKAs using a navigation system (Orthopilot® ver. 6.0; B. Braun Aesculap), respectively. In the preoperative and postoperative kinematic analysis, the knee was moved manually from 0° to 120°, and femoral anteroposterior translations of the medial femoral condyle (MFC) and lateral femoral condyle (LFC) were recorded every 0.1 s from 0° to 120°. Data were subsequently extracted from the software every 10° of flexion and compared between the two groups, and the correlation coefficients between preoperative and postoperative kinematics were calculated. Results: In the postoperative analysis, the MFC in the mobile‐bearing group showed significant posterior translation at 100°, 110° and 120° compared to the fixed‐bearing group (p < 0.01). Similarly, the LFC in the mobile‐bearing group showed significant posterior translation at 100°, 110° and 120° compared to the fixed‐bearing group (p < 0.05, p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively). In the mobile‐bearing group, the preoperative and postoperative anteroposterior translations of the MFC and LFC were correlated (p < 0.01), while in the fixed‐bearing group, there was no correlation. Conclusion: The femoral rollback motion in the mobile‐bearing MST‐TKA correlated with the preoperative kinematics and was larger than that in the fixed‐bearing group. Purpose: Measuring joint kinematics in the clinic is important for diagnosing injuries, tracking healing and guiding treatments; however, current methods are limited by accuracy and/or feasibility of widespread clinical adoption. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop and validate an ultrasound (US)‐based method for measuring knee kinematics during clinical assessments. Methods: We mimicked four clinical laxity assessments (i.e., anterior, posterior, varus, valgus) on five human cadaver knees using our robotic testing system. We simultaneously collected B‐mode cine loops with an US transducer. We computed the errors in kinematics between those measured using our bone‐tracking algorithm, which cross‐correlated regions of interest across frames of the cine loops, and those measured using optical motion capture with bone pins. Additionally, we conducted studies to determine the effects of loading rate and transducer placement on kinematics measured using our US‐based bone tracking. Results: Pooling the trials at experimental speeds and those downsampled to replicate clinical laxity assessments, the maximum root‐mean‐square errors of knee kinematics using our bone‐tracking algorithm were 2.2 mm and 1.3° for the anterior‐posterior and varus‐valgus laxity assessments, respectively. Repeated laxity assessments proved to have good‐to‐excellent repeatability (intraclass correlation coefficients [ICCs] of 0.81–0.99), but ICCs from repositioning the transducer varied more widely, ranging from poor‐to‐good reproducibility (0.19–0.89). Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that US is capable of tracking knee kinematics during dynamic movement. Because US is a safe and commonly used imaging modality, when paired with our bone‐tracking algorithm, US has the potential to assess dynamic knee kinematics across a wide variety of applications in the clinic. This article presents the formulation of a finite element method for nonlinear Kirchhoff rods, based on a G1$$ {G}^1 $$ interpolation of the rod's geometry in terms of Hermite shape functions. The critical use of the same interpolation scheme for both the geometry and the kinematics of the rod is shown to lead to the correct invariant properties of the final numerical formulation, thus leading to the correct resolution of the fundamental equilibrium relations along it (balance of forces and moments). The so‐called "self‐straining" is completely avoided. Objectives: Despite qualitative observations of wild primates pumping branches before leaping across gaps in the canopy, most studies have suggested that support compliance increases the energetic cost of arboreal leaping, thus limiting leaping performance. In this study, we quantified branch pumping behavior and tree swaying in wild primates to test the hypothesis that these behaviors improve leaping performance. Materials and Methods: We recorded wild colobine monkeys crossing gaps in the canopy and quantitatively tracked the kinematics of both the monkey and the compliant support during behavioral sequences. We also empirically measured the compliance of a sample of locomotor supports in the monkeys' natural habitat, allowing us to quantify the resonant properties of substrates used during leaping. Results: Analyses of three recordings show that adult red colobus monkeys (Piliocolobus tephrosceles) use branch compliance to their advantage by actively pumping branches before leaping, augmenting their vertical velocity at take‐off. Quantitative modeling of branch resonance periods, based on empirical measurements of support compliance, suggests that monkeys specifically employed branch pumping on relatively thin branches with protracted periods of oscillation. Finally, an additional four recordings show that both red colobus and black and white colobus monkeys (Colobus guereza) utilize tree swaying to cross large gaps, augmenting horizontal velocity at take‐off. Discussion: This deliberate branch manipulation to produce a mechanical effect for stronger propulsion is consistent with the framework of instrumental problem‐solving. Footwear has the potential to reduce soft‐tissue vibrations (STV) but responses are highly subject‐specific. Recent evidence shows that compressive garments minimizing STV have a beneficial effect on neuromuscular (NM) fatigue. The aim was to determine whether an individualized midsole hardness can minimize STV and NM fatigue during a half marathon. Twenty experienced runners were recruited for three visits: a familiarization session including the identification of midsole minimizing and maximizing STV amplitude (MIN and MAX, respectively), and two half marathon sessions at 95% of speed at the second ventilatory threshold. STV of the gastrocnemius medialis (GM) muscle, running kinetics, foot strike pattern, rating perceived exhaustion (RPE), and midsole liking were recorded every 3 km. NM fatigue was assessed on plantar flexors (PF) before (PRE) and after (POST) the half marathon. At POST, PF central and peripheral alterations and changes in contact time, step frequency, STV median frequency, and impact force frequency as well as foot strike pattern were found in both MIN and MAX. No significant differences in damping, STV main frequency, flight time, duty factor, and loading rate were observed between conditions whatever the time period. During the half marathon, STV amplitude of GM significantly increased over time for the MAX condition (+13.3%) only. Differences between MIN and MAX were identified for RPE and midsole liking. It could be hypothesized that, while significant, the effect of midsole hardness on STV is too low to substantially affect NM fatigue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studying the detailed biomechanics of flying animals requires accurate three‐dimensional coordinates for key anatomical landmarks. Traditionally, this relies on manually digitizing animal videos, a labor‐intensive task that scales poorly with increasing framerates and numbers of cameras. Here, we present a workflow that combines deep learning–powered automatic digitization with filtering and correction of mislabeled points using quality metrics from deep learning and 3D reconstruction. We tested our workflow using a particularly challenging scenario: bat flight. First, we documented four bats flying steadily in a 2 m3 wind tunnel test section. Wing kinematic parameters resulting from manually digitizing bats with markers applied to anatomical landmarks were not significantly different from those resulting from applying our workflow to the same bats without markers for five out of six parameters. Second, we compared coordinates from manual digitization against those yielded via our workflow for bats flying freely in a 344 m3 enclosure. Average distance between coordinates from our workflow and those from manual digitization was less than a millimeter larger than the average human‐to‐human coordinate distance. Background: Mandibular reconstruction patients often suffer abnormalities in the mandibular kinematics. In silico simulations, such as musculoskeletal modelling, can be used to predict post‐operative mandibular kinematics. It is important to validate the mandibular musculoskeletal model and analyse the factors influencing its accuracy. Objectives: To investigate the jaw opening‐closing movements after mandibular reconstruction, as predicted by the subject‐specific musculoskeletal model, and the factors influencing its accuracy. Methods: Ten mandibular reconstruction patients were enrolled in this study. Cone‐beam computed tomography images, mandibular movements, and surface electromyogram signals were recorded preoperatively. A subject‐specific mandibular musculoskeletal model was established to predict surgical outcomes using patient‐averaged muscle parameter changes as model inputs. Jaw bone geometry was replaced by surgical planning results, and the muscle insertion sites were registered based on the non‐rigid iterative closest point method. The predicted jaw kinematic data were validated based on 6‐month post‐operative measurements. Correlations between the prediction accuracy and patient characteristics (age, pathology and surgical scope) were further analysed. Results: The root mean square error (RMSE) for lower incisor displacement was 31.4%, and the error for peak magnitude of jaw opening was 4.9 mm. Age, post‐operative infection and radiotherapy influenced the prediction accuracy. The amount of masseter detachment showed little correlation with jaw opening. Conclusion: The mandibular musculoskeletal model successfully predicted short‐range jaw opening functions after mandibular reconstruction. Premaxillary protrusion and the performance advantages it confers are implicated in the success of diverse lineages of teleost fishes, such as Cypriniformes and Acanthomorpha. Although premaxillary protrusion has evolved independently at least five times within bony fishes, much of the functional work investigating this kinesis relates to mechanisms found only in these two clades. Few studies have characterized feeding mechanisms in less‐diverse premaxilla‐protruding lineages and fewer yet have investigated the distinctive anatomy underlying jaw kinesis in these lineages. Here, we integrated dissection, clearing and staining, histology, micro‐CT, and high‐speed videography to investigate an isolated and independent origin of jaw protrusion in the hingemouth, Phractolaemus ansorgii, which employs a complex arrangement of bones, musculature, and connective tissues to feed on benthic detritus via a deployable proboscis. Our goals were to provide an integrative account of the underlying architecture of P. ansorgii's feeding apparatus and to assess the functional consequences of this drastic deviation from the more typical teleost condition. Phractolaemus ansorgii's cranial anatomy is distinct from all other fishes in that its adducted lower jaw is caudally oriented, and it possesses a mouth at the terminal end of an elongated, tube‐like proboscis that is unique in its lack of skeletal support from the oral jaws. Instead, its mouth is supported primarily by hyaline‐cell cartilage and other rigid connective tissues, and features highly flexible lips that are covered in rows of keratinous unculi. Concomitant changes to the adductor musculature likely allow for the flexibility to protrude the mouth dorsally and ventrally as observed during different feeding behaviors, while the intrinsic compliance of the lips allows for more effective scraping of irregular surfaces. From our feeding videos, we find that P. ansorgii is capable of modulating the distance of protrusion, with maximum anterior protrusion exceeding 30% of head length. This represents a previously undescribed example of extreme jaw protrusion on par with many acanthomorph species. Protrusion is much slower in P. ansorgii—reaching an average speed of 2.74 cm/s—compared to acanthomorphs feeding on elusive prey or even benthivorous cypriniforms. However, this reorganization of cranial anatomy may reflect a greater need for dexterity to forage more precisely in multiple directions and on a wide variety of surface textures. Although this highly modified mechanism may have limited versatility over evolutionary timescales, it has persisted in solitude within Gonorynchiformes, representing a novel functional solution for benthic feeding in tropical West African rivers. In this paper, two new parallel mechanisms (PMs) with fewer active inputs than the degrees of freedom (DOFs)are proposed: (i) an nSPS (n = 7, 8, 9) six‐DOF PM with n‐6 active inputs and six lockable joints. and (ii) a 3RPS‐SPS 3‐DOF PM with one active input and three lockable joints. Compared with the traditional PMs, the difference is that the proposed PMs can achieve the same mobility by using a minimal number of active joints. Moreover, the load‐carrying capacity is also improved compared with the original standard mechanisms, since the new PMs become statically redundant when all the branches are locked. For this purpose, a sequential motion control principle is introduced that requires both inverse and forward kinematics of PMs. Kinematic modeling, dimensional optimization, and structural design are carried out for the 7SPS and 3RPS‐SPS mechanisms, and the two prototypes are constructed for experimental validation. X‐band marine radar observations and a hindcast simulation from a 3D hydrostatic model are used to provide an overview of Connecticut River (USA) ebb plume front expansion into the strong tidal crossflow of eastern Long Island Sound. The model performance is evaluated against in situ and remote sensing observations and demonstrates dominant control of the front by semidiurnal tides. The recurring frontal evolution is classified into three dynamical stages of arrest, propagation, and advection. A conceptual model that follows this progressing balance between outflow buoyancy and crossflow momentum qualitatively reproduces frontal evolution in both the radar observations and the hindcast. The majority of the residual, intertidal variability of front timing and geometry is explained by co‐varying tidal amplitude, freshwater discharge, and wind stress using a multi‐linear regression analysis of the radar observation record. Intrinsic front speeds in the modeled frontal propagation are compared with the analytical model of Benjamin (1968, https://doi.org/10.1017/s0022112068000133), with better agreement achieved after accounting for ambient near‐surface shear associated with wind forcing. Plain Language Summary: The fresh buoyant water that exits the Connecticut River mouth (USA) during each ebb tide expands as a plume, and floats above the denser waters of Long Island Sound. Currents in the Sound flow back and forth along the coast each tide, pushing the plume along the shore first to the east and then to the west. The location of the plume boundary (front) goes through a similar cycle almost every tide, initially being held stationary by eastward tidal currents, then expanding freely around slack tide, and subsequently being aided as it moves to the west by the ambient flow. Small changes to the arrival time and shape of the front are linked to changes in river discharge, tidal strength, and winds. Realistic simulations using a type of numerical model that aids coastal decision making are able to reproduce the tidal progression of front movement that was observed in 6 weeks of marine radar images of the water surface. Front movement in the numerical model also fits a simple analytical theory to a degree not previously seen on such a large scale, despite the complicating effects of wind. This paper conducts in‐depth research on the sound source localization technology of the microphone array and designs a sound source localization system based on the cube microphone array. Firstly, the sound source localization model is established using the cube microphone array combined with the spherical near‐field acoustic holography. Secondly, the numerical and sound source localization simulations are carried out using the spherical wave. Finally, the simulation and experiment of sound source location for sound at 100, 1000, and 2000 Hz are carried out using the model. Both simulation and experimental results show that when the sound source frequency is 100 and 1000 Hz, the location of the sound source can be accurately located by using the sound source localization model of a cube microphone array, and the sound field reconstruction error is low. When the sound source frequency is 2000 Hz, the location of the sound source cannot be located, and the sound field reconstruction error is very high, which will cause the misjudgment of the sound source location. To systematically and efficiently study the relationship between the design parameters and the strength and performance of the laminated coupling, it is expected to provide a theoretical basis for the design and selection of the coupling. Based on ANSYS parametric design language, parametric modeling and analysis were carried out on four different types of membranes, namely circular, multilateral, joint and plum‐pattern membranes. The loads and constraints were parameterized and the automatic grid division and analytical parameter control were realized, so as to obtain the stress distribution rule of the membranes. Based on Python language and parameterized commands, the secondary development of the membrane parametric finite element analysis tool was provided. The influence law of the factors such as angular displacement, torque, thickness, and the number of holes on the membrane performance was studied respectively, so as to achieve efficient finite element analysis. Results show that stress concentration exists near the hole edge of the membranes under the action of torque and angular displacement. Both the increase of torque and angular displacement will maximize the equivalent stress of the membranes, and appropriately reducing the thickness of the single membrane can lower the equivalent stress of the membranes. At present, hydraulic transmission loaders have high automatic adaptability and convenient operation, but their transmission efficiency is low, and the intelligent degree of energy consumption regulation is limited. Strengthening the research of locking device in torque converter is an important measure to effectively reduce energy consumption. Therefore, the research uses MATLAB software and torque converter parameters to build the external characteristic curves of the engine and torque converter, and builds the dynamic model based on the working principle and locking process of the lockup clutch. The research and experimental analysis are carried out from three aspects of the lockup dynamic process of the torque converter, the lock‐up and unlocking conditions, and the change of the lockup oil pressure of the clutch. The results show that the speed difference range between pump wheel and turbine (233.08–365.44 rpm) is much lower than that of other cases (409.68–616.23 rpm) when the engine and torque converter are matched. And the fuel rate is the highest when the throttle opening of the loader is 70%, about 38%. The above results show that the locking structure of the hydraulic torque converter of the loader can effectively reduce the working vibration and improve the service life and fuel rate. And its energy‐saving application effect has an important enlightening effect on the performance optimization and resource utilization of construction machinery, and provides new ideas for improvement. Compared to the thin‐skinned Subandean foreland fold‐and‐thrust belt of northern Argentina and Bolivia, the tectonically active morphotectonic province of the Santa Bárbara System in the Andean broken foreland of northwestern Argentina is characterized by a temporally and spatially disparate deformation style. Although there is no well‐defined orogenic deformation front associated with the uplift of these basement‐cored, reverse‐fault bounded mountain ranges, there has been an overall eastward trend in Andean compressional deformation since the Miocene. While reactivation of basement anisotropies, such as early Paleozoic metamorphic fabrics and Cretaceous normal faults, has been proposed to have profoundly affected deformation processes in the Santa Bárbara System, other mechanisms involving Mesozoic and Cenozoic cover rocks may also have played an important role in orogenic deformation in this sector of the Andean foreland. We present structural field observations, interpretations of seismic reflection profiles, and kinematic modeling from the basins bordering the Candelaria Range in the southern sector of the Santa Bárbara System at 26°S. Our analysis features a 110‐km‐long structural cross section that images and links deep‐seated structures with shallow neotectonic faults. We find that regional shortening has been facilitated by several faults associated with a regional detachment at a depth of 23 km, resulting in total horizontal shortening of about 17% (18.4 km). While the deep‐seated first‐order structures seem closely linked to seismogenic processes in the Andean foreland, shallow second‐order structures within the sedimentary cover modify the intermontane landscapes and appear to be associated with aseismic creep. Restraining bends influence topography, strike‐slip evolution, and earthquake rupture dynamics, however the specific factors governing their geometry and development in the crust are not well established. These relationships are challenging to investigate in field examples due to cannibalization and erosion of earlier structures with cumulative strain. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the structure, morphology, and kinematics of 22 basement‐cored restraining bends on low net‐slip faults (<10 km) within the southern Eastern California shear zone (SECSZ) via mapping, topographic analyses, and 3D numerical modeling. The bends are self‐similar in form with most exhibiting focused relief between high‐angle bounding faults with an arrowhead shape in map view and a "whaleback" longitudinal profile. Slight changes in that form occur with increasing size indicating predictable growth that appears to be primarily controlled by local fault geometries (i.e., bifurcation angle), rather than the influence of fault obliquity relative to far‐field plate motion, due to inefficient slip‐transfer across interconnected irregularly trending closely spaced faults. Modeling results indicate that the self‐similar fault‐bound geometry of SECSZ restraining bends may arise from elevated shear strain at the outer corners of single transpressional fault bends with increasing cumulative slip. This, in turn, promotes growth of a new fault leading to efficient accommodation of local convergent strain via uplift between bounding faults. Finally, our results indicate that the kilometer‐scale restraining bends contribute minimally to regional contraction as they only penetrate the upper third of the seismogenic crust and are therefore also unlikely to impede large earthquake surface ruptures. Background and Aims: Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is common in males, causing reduced physical activity and chronic pain. One proposed cause of PFP is aberrant biomechanics during tasks loading the patellofemoral joint. Consistent evidence exists for females with PFP, but it is uncertain if males with PFP have altered biomechanics. This study investigated the kinematics of males with PFP compared to pain‐free males during forward step‐down (StDn) and single‐leg squat (SLSq). Methods: A cross‐sectional study including 40 males aged 20–39 years (28.28 ± 5.46) was conducted (20 PFP, 20 pain‐free). Participants performed StDn and SLSq while motion was captured with a video‐based motion capture system (Motion Analysis Corporation). Triplanar peak angles and angular ranges of motion (ROM) of the trunk, pelvis, and weight‐bearing hip, knee, and ankle were dependent variables. Mixed‐model ANOVA tests were used to determine the presence of significant interactions and main effects of group and task. Results: Males with PFP had significantly lower peak knee adduction angles compared to pain‐free males (p = 0.01). Significant group x task interactions were found for hip and pelvis ROM (p < 0.05). PFP participants had increased hip and pelvis ROM during StDn in the frontal and transverse planes but reduced or nearly equal ROM for these variables during SLSq. Peak hip adduction, hip internal rotation, contralateral pelvic drop and anterior tilt, trunk flexion, and ankle dorsiflexion were greater during StDn compared to SLSq (p < 0.05). ROM of the hip, pelvis, trunk, and ankle were greater during StDn compared to SLSq (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Males with PFP had reduced peak knee adduction angles in StDn and SLSq. Males with PFP demonstrated increased hip and pelvis ROM during StDn versus SLSq, particularly in the frontal and transverse planes. Clinicians should consider StDn as a clinical test since aberrant movement may be easier to detect than in SLSq.
