Nucleic acid demethylases of α-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase (AlkB) family can reversibly erase methyl adducts from nucleobases, thus dynamically regulating the methylation status of DNA/RNA and playing critical roles in multiple cellular processes. But little is known about AlkB demethylases in filamentous fungi so far. The present study reports that Monascus purpureus genomes contain a total of five MpAlkB genes. The MpAlkB1 gene was disrupted and complemented through homologous recombination strategy to analyze its biological functions in M. purpureus. MpAlkB1 knockout significantly accelerated the growth of strain, increased biomass, promoted sporulation and cleistothecia development, reduced the content of Monascus pigments (Mps), and strongly inhibited citrinin biosynthesis. The downregulated expression of the global regulator gene LaeA, and genes of Mps biosynthesis gene cluster (BGC) or citrinin BGC in MpAlkB1 disruption strain supported the pleiotropic trait changes caused by MpAlkB1 deletion. Purpose: Although bariatric surgery is associated with a decrease in obesity complications, it may affect the children's growth by a maternal nutritional deficiency. This study was conducted to assess the effect of maternal bariatric surgery on offspring anthropometry. Materials and Methods: In a mixed cohort, anthropometric status of children aged 5 years or less born to mothers with a history of bariatric surgery was compared with a control group consists of peers born to mothers with obesity but without bariatric surgery. Anthropometric indices including crude and quantile values for BMI, weight, height, and head circumference at birth and the first 5 years of life were measured. Then, the adjusted effect of maternal surgical history on anthropometric status was estimated by linear regression. Results: From a total of 56 children, 28 born to mothers with a history of bariatric surgery, and 28 born to mothers with obesity but without bariatric surgery. At birth, weight (2915 vs 3225 g) and BMI (11.72 vs 12.94 kg/m2) were lower in the group with maternal bariatric surgery than in the control group (P = 0.02 and P = 0.03, respectively), although after regression adjustment, there was only a significant difference between the two groups in height for age value in children less than 5 years old (B = 0.872, P-value = 0.001). Conclusion: Bariatric surgery with decrease of weight indices at birth has a probable influence on growth and development in next years. Cordyceps cicadae is recognized for its medicinal properties, attributed to bioactive constituents like polysaccharides and adenosine, which have been shown to improve kidney and liver functions and possess anti-tumor properties. Rho GTPase activating proteins (Rho GAPs) serve as inhibitory regulators of Rho GTPases in eukaryotic cells by accelerating the GTP hydrolysis of Rho GTPases, leading to their inactivation. In this study, we explored the function of the CcRga8 gene in C. cicadae, which encodes a Rho-type GTPase activating protein. Our study found that the knockout of CcRga8 resulted in a decrease in polysaccharide levels and an increase in adenosine concentration. Furthermore, the mutants exhibited altered spore yield and morphology, fruiting body development, decreased infectivity, reduced resistance to hyperosmotic stress, oxidative conditions, and cell wall inhibitors. Key message: MePMTR1 is involved in plant development and production as well as photosynthesis in plant. Melatonin is widely involved in plant growth and development as well as stress responses. Compared with the extending studies of melatonin in stress responses, the direct link between melatonin and plant development in the whole stages remains unclear. With the identification of phytomelatonin receptor PMTR1 in plants, melatonin signalling is becoming much clearer. However, the function of MePMTR1 in tropical crop cassava remains elusive. In this study, we found that overexpression of MePMTR1 showed larger biomass than wild type (WT), including higher number and area of leaves, weight, and accompanying with higher photosynthetic efficiency. Consistently, exogenous melatonin accelerated photosynthetic rate in Arabidopsis. In addition, MePMTR1-overexpressed plants exhibited more resistance to dark-induced senescence compared with WT, demonstrated by higher chlorophyll, lower hydrogen peroxide and superoxide content. In summary, this study illustrated that melatonin and its receptor regulate growth, development and senescence in plants, highlighting the potential application of melatonin and its receptor in improving crop yield and photosynthesis. Main conclusion: Overexpression of MdLBD3 in Arabidopsis reduced sensitivity to salt and drought stresses and was instrumental in promoting early flowering. Salt and drought stresses have serious effects on plant growth. LATERAL ORGAN BOUNDARY DOMAIN (LBD) proteins are a plant-specific transcription factors (TFs) family and play important roles in plants in resisting to abiotic stress. However, about the function of LBDs in apple and other woody plants is little known. In this study, protein sequences of the LBD family TFs in apples were identified which contained conserved LOB domains. The qRT-PCR analysis showed that the MdLBD3 gene was widely expressed in various tissues and organs. The subcellular localization assay showed that the MdLBD3 protein was localized in the nucleus. Ectopic expression of MdLBD3 in Arabidopsis positively regulated its salt and drought resistance, and promoted early flowering. Collectively, these results showed that MdLBD3 improved the abiotic stress resistance, plant growth and development. Several epidemiological, clinical and experimental studies in recent decades have shown the relationship between exposure to stressors during development and health outcomes later in life. The characterization of these susceptible phases, such as preconception, gestation, lactation and adolescence, and the understanding of factors that influence the risk of an adult individual for developing obesity, metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, is the focus of the DOHaD (Developmental Origins of Health and Disease) research line. In this sense, advancements in molecular biology techniques have contributed significantly to the understanding of the mechanisms underlying the observed phenotypes, their morphological and physiological alterations, having as a main driving factor the epigenetic modifications and their consequent modulation of gene expression. The present narrative review aimed to characterize the different susceptible phases of development and associated epigenetic modifications, and their implication in the development of non-communicable diseases. Ginsenoside Rb1 is an allelopathic self-toxic substance that can affect the growth and development of ginseng. This study investigated whether the application of exogenous Rb1 enhances the pathogenicity of ginseng by regulating the antioxidant system and endogenous hormones. Rb1 can inhibit the growth and development of Panax ginseng by inducing Fusarium oxysporum under three concentrations. At the same time, the activities of four antioxidant enzymes and the contents of three endogenous hormones in the roots of Panax ginseng decreased significantly. Compared with the control group, the incidence of ginseng in different treatment groups was significantly increased and the underground growth was significantly inhibited. CrRLK1L is subfamily of the receptor-like kinase family, which unique to plants and play an important role in regulation of plant growth and development and response to stress. Information about the number, location, structure, molecular phylogeny and expression of CrRLK1L genes in peanut were limited. In this study, 89 CrRLK1L genes were identified in the peanut genome, and further divided into ten groups according to phylogenetic analysis. CrRLK1L genes were dispersive and unevenly distributed on 20 chromosomes. Structure analysis revealed that AhCrRLK1LVIIIs and AhCrRLK1LIXs exhibit 7 to 16 introns, but all the AhCrRLK1LIIs, AhCrRLK1LVs, AhCrRLK1LVIs and the majority of the AhCrRLK1LIVs and AhCrRLK1LXs contained no intron. Synteny analysis showed that segmental duplications played a critical role in AhCrRLK1Ls expansion, and many AhCrRLK1Ls duplications occurred after the divergence of peanut and Arabidopsis/soybean from their last common ancestor. Gene transcription analyses revealed that five of the AhCrRLK1LIIs specifically expressed in flowers. All AhCrRLK1LVIIs and three AhCrRLK1LIIIs, might participate in regulation of pollen tube growth. AhCrRLK1LVs presented high transcription levels in different organisms, and induced by biotic and abiotic stresses, indicated its importance during plant growth, development and stress responses. In addition, fifteen genes in species specific clades and eleven CrRLK1LIVs were differently expressed after drought stress. And thirty-six AhCrRLK1Ls were induced by aluminum (Al) stress in Al tolerant peanut cultivar. Rice leaf folder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenée), is one of the most serious pests on rice. At present, chemical control is the main method for controlling this pest. However, the indiscriminate use of chemical insecticides has non-target effects and may cause environmental pollution. Besides, leaf curling behavior by C. medinalis may indirectly reduce the efficacy of chemical spray. Therefore, it is crucial to cultivate efficient rice varieties resistant to this pest. Previous studies have found that three different rice varieties, Zhongzao39 (ZZ39), Xiushui134 (XS134), and Yongyou1540 (YY1540), had varying degrees of infestation by C. medinalis. However, it is currently unclear whether the reason for this difference is related to the difference in defense ability of the three rice varieties against the infestation of C. medinalis. To explore this issue, the current study investigated the effects of three rice varieties on the growth performance and food utilization capability of the 4th instar C. medinalis. Further, it elucidated the differences in defense responses among different rice varieties based on the differences in leaf physiological and biochemical indicators and their impact on population occurrence. The results showed that the larval survival rate was the lowest, and the development period was significantly prolonged after feeding on YY1540. This was not related to the differences in leaf wax, pigments, and nutritional components among the three rice varieties nor to the feeding preferences of the larvae. The rate of superoxide anion production, hydrogen peroxide content, and the activity of three protective enzymes were negatively correlated with larval survival rate, and they all showed the highest in YY1540 leaves. Compared to other tested varieties, although the larvae feeding on YY1540 had higher conversion efficiency of ingested food and lower relative consumption rate, their relative growth was faster, indicating stronger food utilization capability. However, they had a lower accumulation of protein. This suggests that different rice varieties had different levels of oxidative stress after infestation by C. medinalis. The defense response of YY1540 was more intense, which was not conducive to the development of the larvae population. These results will provide new insights into the interaction mechanism between different rice varieties and C. medinalis and provide a theoretical basis for cultivating rice varieties resistant to this pest. Main conclusion: This review provides a detailed description of the function and mechanism of VQ family gene, which is helpful for further research and application of VQ gene resources to improve crops. Valine-glutamine (VQ) motif-containing proteins are a large class of transcriptional regulatory cofactors. VQ proteins have their own unique molecular characteristics. Amino acids are highly conserved only in the VQ domain, while other positions vary greatly. Most VQ genes do not contain introns and the length of their proteins is less than 300 amino acids. A majority of VQ proteins are predicted to be localized in the nucleus. The promoter of many VQ genes contains stress or growth related elements. Segment duplication and tandem duplication are the main amplification mechanisms of the VQ gene family in angiosperms and gymnosperms, respectively. Purification selection plays a crucial role in the evolution of many VQ genes. By interacting with WRKY, MAPK, and other proteins, VQ proteins participate in the multiple signaling pathways to regulate plant growth and development, as well as defense responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. Although there have been some reports on the VQ gene family in plants, most of them only identify family members, with little functional verification, and there is also a lack of complete, detailed, and up-to-date review of research progress. Here, we comprehensively summarized the research progress of VQ genes that have been published so far, mainly including their molecular characteristics, biological functions, importance of VQ motif, and working mechanisms. Finally, the regulatory network and model of VQ genes were drawn, a precise molecular breeding strategy based on VQ genes was proposed, and the current problems and future prospects were pointed out, providing a powerful reference for further research and utilization of VQ genes in plant improvement.
