The Stress Appraisal Measure (SAM) captures six different types of cognitive appraisals in anticipation of an upcoming stressful situation. The goal of this article was to examine the factorial structure and the validity of the scale in the French language while accounting for existing limitations in the literature. These include factorial structure instability and low internal consistency for specific subscales across multiple validation studies in other languages. In the first study (N = 425), the results from an exploratory factor analysis reliably suggested the removal of five items, the bridging of the threat and challenge subscales as one, and a new general five-factor structure. The new structure and its construct, convergent, and discriminant validity were confirmed in a second study (N = 308). Despite rising rates of drug-related deaths (DRDs), the consequences of DRDs for bereaved family members are scarcely investigated. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of prolonged grief (PG) symptoms in bereaved family members after DRDs, identify predictors of PG and examine whether symptom levels decrease with time. A cross-sectional design based on survey data from parents (n = 93), siblings (n = 78), children (n = 24) and other family members (n = 39) was conducted (n = 234). Descriptive analyses, a multivariate linear regression, and ANOVA were performed. 60 family members (26%) suffered from high levels of PG symptoms after DRDs (parents 31.2%, siblings 21.8%, children 20.9%). The strongest associations were found between a high level of symptoms and 'months since the loss', 'suicidal thoughts' and 'withdrawal from others'. The ANOVA analyses showed that time does not always 'heal all wounds', and the bereaved who lost one to 2 years ago had the highest level of PG symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Dependency is defined as a person's inability to meet basic human needs. In the context of aging, biopsychosocial changes compromise functionality, predisposing older adults to rely on others to perform daily activities. Fear of dependency describes the fear people have of appearing and/or being weak and/or reliant on others. The Fear of Dependency Scale (FDS), developed by Adams-Price and Ralston in 2016, aims to assess the fear of dependency by measuring an individual's attitudes toward being helped. Objective: This study presents a European Portuguese version of the FDS and examines its psychometric properties (internal consistency reliability and content validity). Methods: The translation and both cultural and linguistic adaptation of the FDS were performed by a panel of experts. A cross-sectional study was then performed to evaluate the psychometric properties (in terms of its reliability and validity) of the translated version of the FDS among a sample of 100 community-dwelling older adults. Results: The European Portuguese version of the FDS exhibited good psychometric properties. The scale's internal consistency was 0.84. Conclusions: The European Portuguese version of the FDS is a reliable, valid, and practical instrument for assessing the fear of dependency in older adults in the Portuguese population. Background: Social media use is increasing every year, and nurses use social media to connect with each other. As Instagram was the most downloaded application in 2022 worldwide, this study focused on nurses' use of Instagram in the context of the development of a professional identity and in support of the professionalization of nursing. Objectives: The aim of the study was to find out how nurses use their Instagram profiles to influence their followers' professional identity and support the professionalization of nursing. Therefore, nurses' Instagram posts and the hashtags they used were analyzed. Methods: A visual content analysis to analyze different Instagram posts using a hierarchical cluster analysis, an ANOVA, and a qualitative content analysis were conducted. The most frequently used nursing-related hashtags were analyzed to include different Instagram profiles (n = 15) in the study. Results: This study identified three different clusters of Instagram profiles, which can be characterized as " Show me what you do," " Let's do education," and " The things we believe in." Consequently, it can be stated that nurses who display their values and beliefs in Instagram reels, half in nursing settings and half at home, have the highest number of followers and significantly more comments per post. The cluster that showed significantly more knowledge-based posts had the lowest number of followers and significantly the lowest number of comments. The content analysis of the hashtags used suggested that nurses who identify themselves as such want to attract attention from other nurses who use nursing-related hashtags. Conclusions: The results reveal that there is a possible benefit of the use of social media in the development of the nursing profession and professional identity. Background: Evidence from animal and human studies suggests glutamatergic dysfunction in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The purpose of this study was to investigate glutamate abnormalities in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLFPC) of individuals with PTSD using 7T MRS, which has better spectral resolution and signal-to-noise ratio than lower field strengths, thus allowing for better spectral quality and higher sensitivity. We hypothesized that individuals with PTSD would have lower glutamate levels compared to trauma-exposed individuals without PTSD and individuals without trauma exposure. Additionally, we explored potential alterations in other neurometabolites and the relationship between glutamate and psychiatric symptoms. Methods: Individuals with PTSD (n = 27), trauma-exposed individuals without PTSD (n = 27), and individuals without trauma exposure (n = 26) underwent 7T MRS to measure glutamate and other neurometabolites in the left DLPFC. The severities of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and dissociation symptoms were assessed. Results: We found that glutamate was lower in the PTSD and trauma-exposed groups compared to the group without trauma exposure. Furthermore, N -acetylaspartate (NAA) was lower and lactate was higher in the PTSD group compared to the group without trauma exposure. Glutamate was negatively correlated with depression symptom severity in the PTSD group. Glutamate was not correlated with PTSD symptom severity. Conclusion: In this first 7T MRS study of PTSD, we observed altered concentrations of glutamate, NAA, and lactate. Our findings provide evidence for multiple possible pathological processes in individuals with PTSD. High-field MRS offers insight into the neurometabolic alterations associated with PTSD and is a powerful tool to probe trauma- and stress-related neurotransmission and metabolism in vivo. Introduction: Simulation training has become an integral component of nursing education, offering students opportunities to develop and refine their clinical skills in a controlled and safe environment. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical skill competence and professional behaviors of undergraduate nursing students following simulation training. Design: A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed for this study. Setting: The study was conducted in the simulation center at the University of Tabuk using the Clinical Competency Questionnaire (CCQ), with data collected between January 1, 2023 and February 28, 2023. Participants were enrolled using a convenience sampling method, including nursing students in the 3rd and 4th years who trained in the simulation center and agreed to participate. Results: The study results indicate that a majority of students demonstrated strong theoretical knowledge and practical competence in performing sterile techniques and administering oral medications with minimal or no supervision, with percentages of 74.7% and 73.3%, respectively. A significant proportion of students reported uncertainty or lack of skill in performing shift reports using SBAR (38.4%) and assessing gastrostomy tube placement (32.9%). Students exhibited satisfactory knowledge and competence in maintaining appropriate appearance, attire, and conduct (71.2%), understanding, and supporting group goals (71.2%), and comprehending patients' rights (69.9%). Conclusion: The findings suggest that nursing students attain a relatively high level of clinical competence and self-confidence after simulation training. This study recommends incorporating simulation training in nursing education, which enhances professional behaviors like appearance, group goals, and patient rights, but requires improvement in constructive criticism, problem prevention, and cultural competence. Introduction: The recommended objective for mental health plans and policies is the adoption of recovery approaches to mental healthcare. Mental health recovery is no longer defined by symptom resolution but as a journey towards a meaningful life from the consumer's own perspective. Recovery approaches focus on consumers' strengths, feelings of well-being and the achievement of personal goals. Designing recovery-oriented interventions is crucial for supporting people in their personal recovery journey. Aim: This study sought to evaluate how attending a recovery-oriented intervention impacts the recovery of attending people living with serious mental illness. Methods: A quasi-experimental approach was utilised to examine changes in self-reported recovery progress in a purposive sample of consumers living with enduring mental illness (N = 105). Recovery progress was evaluated via the Recovery Assessment Scale – Domains and Stages (RAS-DS). Data were collected at entry and exit to a therapeutic recreation programme grounded in principles of recovery-oriented care and social contact theory. Pre-post scores were analysed via a repeated-measures multivariate analysis of variance (RM-MANOVA) per the four RAS-DS recovery domains. Results: After attending the therapeutic recreation programme, consumer recovery scores significantly increased in the functional, personal, and social recovery RAS-DS domains as measured by ' Doing Things I Value', 'Looking Forward ', and ' Connecting and Belonging' (respectively). No changes were observed to consumers' clinical recovery progress, as assessed via the recovery domain ' Mastering my Illness'. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate that therapeutic recreation camps can provide a recovery-based approach to mental healthcare, with positive effects on the three areas of: a purposeful life; connection and belonging; and optimism and hope. Recovery Camp has been previously identified by the Productivity Commission as having potential person-centred recovery benefits for mental health consumers. The results of this study now establish these benefits as evidence based and can be used to guide mental health practice and policy for the implementation of therapeutic recreation camps for mental health recovery. Students with mental health needs, behavioral support needs, and/or emotional disturbance can engage in internalizing behaviors, externalizing behaviors, or both. Preservice and induction phase elementary general education teachers are reported to have limited education in providing evidence-based behavior management strategies, especially for students who engage in internalizing and/or externalizing behaviors. There is little understanding as to the differences in elementary general education teachers' knowledge, application, and self-efficacy in applying evidence-based behavior management strategies between preservice teachers, first-year teachers, second-year teachers, and third-year teachers. The purpose of this preliminary secondary data analysis was to examine differences in U.S. elementary general education teacher knowledge, application, and self-efficacy in evidence-based behavior management strategies from preservice to induction phase teaching. Results indicated third-year teachers had significantly less behavior management knowledge than preservice teachers. All other results were nonsignificant; however, there were practical differences when comparing the four groups on the knowledge and application measures. Implications for findings indicate the need for induction programs to focus on evidence-based behavior management strategies to support the development of behavior management for induction phase elementary education teachers as they progress through their first 3 years of teaching. In this study, we examined whether experience level and various dual motor and cognitive or single tasks influenced young soccer players' physical performance during small-sided games. Participants were 72 players from U-13 (n = 36) and U-17 (n = 36) groups who participated in 3-to-a-side small-sided games under four experimental conditions: control, a secondary motor task, an additional related secondary cognitive task, and an additional secondary non-specific task. We used GPS devices to measure physical performance in terms of distances covered and accelerations at different thresholds. We found no significant interaction effect between player experience and task condition (p =.540), meaning that dual tasks had comparable effects on players of different experience levels. There were significant main effects of both experience level (p <.001) and condition (p <.001) on most physically related variables. Older players outperformed younger ones, particularly in high-intensity actions. While secondary motor tasks decreased physical performance, secondary cognitive tasks, irrespective of specificity, did not impair players' performances. In conclusion, experience level did not influence the players' physical response to dual tasks, and a secondary motor task was more disruptive to physical performance than either of two types of secondary cognitive tasks. With rates of coercive control (CC) increasing, there is a need to ensure that intervention programs are underpinned by evidence-based research. Current interventions are scarce, with their efficacy rarely established. Most current interventions appear to rely on victims seeking support from formal sources/agencies, despite suggestions that victims are more likely to confide in people they know, such as their friends. Researchers suggest that a victim's friends may provide an effective source of support and intervention. The aim of this study was to fill the gap in the literature exploring whether the closeness of the relationship to the victim, bystander gender, and bystander concerns influenced attitudes toward intervening in CC situations. The study used an experimental design, whereby participants were randomly allocated to read a vignette depicting a CC scenario involving a friend, colleague, or stranger, and quantitative methods were used to examine bystanders' willingness and concerns about intervening. The sample was 340 Australian participants (229 female, 111 male), recruited from social media, namely community Facebook groups. The results indicated that friends were significantly more willing to intervene than colleagues or strangers, while strangers reported the highest concerns about intervening. Females reported significantly higher willingness to intervene than men despite also reporting higher concerns. Exploratory analysis of concerns about intervening revealed that the participants were most concerned about risk of harm and their beliefs in their ability to successfully intervene. This pilot randomized controlled trial tested the potential efficacy of a brief internet-based, passive psychoeducation intervention, Free From Abuse, in promoting healthy relationships among young adults. Participants aged 18 to 24 years were randomly assigned to an intervention treatment (n = 71) or a placebo control condition (n = 77). Participants in the treatment arm had a larger increase in recognition of abusive behavior and reduction in domestic violence myth acceptance scores than participants in the control arm postintervention and after one week. Background: Consistent across cultures and throughout time is the male preference for younger females. Given its prevalence, the mate choice theory proposes that age–disparate relationships may have contributed to the evolution of maternal mortality and menopause. Objectives: The objective is to document evidence for age disparity in marriage from past and present populations and evaluate their relevance to maternal mortality and menopause. Design: Cross-sectional data were collected from various regions and time points, ranging from the Roman era to the current decade. Methods: To analyze both the age disparity in marriage and age at marriage, data were collected from Ancestry.ca for Quebec, Massachusetts, India, South Africa, and England and Wales. Additional data were taken from the United Nations as a more recent and comprehensive source. To analyze the relationships between age disparity in marriage and different social factors, data on gross domestic product, maternal mortality rates, fertility, primary school enrollment, child marriage rates, and percentage of women in the total labor force were collected from the World Health Organization, World Bank, and United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. Results: The results showed that males were significantly older than females at first marriage in all populations and time frames sampled, supporting the assumption underlying the mate choice theory. Maternal mortality rates were strongly associated with age–disparate relationships, increasing by 275 per 100,000 live births for each additional year in the age disparity. Conclusion: The results from this study provide support for the assumption underlying the mate choice theory of maternal mortality and menopause. Plain language summary: Changing patterns of global age disparity in marriage provide support for the mate choice theory of menopause, raising the possibility of a gradual shift in delayed reproduction and delayed menopause. Living things have inherent capacity to survive and reproduce until they die, with one exception: humans. Women go through menopause while men remain fertile. Among the many explanations offered for the origin of menopause, grandmother hypothesis is the leading one. Being too old to reproduce, it is argued, grandmothers stop reproducing and make up for the loss of fitness through helping (grand mothering) their grand offspring. There are two problems with this theory: first, grand mothering and menopause need not be connected, and second, grandmothers cannot be simultaneously too old to reproduce and not too old to be able to gather resources to make up for their loss of fitness. We proposed a mate choice theory of menopause which posits that human mating system is non-random, that is, males have preference for younger females, depriving older females from reproduction and allowing deleterious fertility mutations to accumulate giving rise to menopause. Male preference for younger females is consistent across cultures and dominates all social relations affecting mate choice including monogamy, serial monogamy, widowers remarrying, polygamy, harem, and others. In this study, we wanted to test if male preference for younger females has been widespread through time. We collected data on age disparity in marriage from past and present populations, from Roman era to the current decade, and evaluated their relevance to the origin of maternal mortality and menopause. The results showed that males were significantly older than females at first marriage in all populations and time frames sampled, supporting the assumption underlying the mate choice theory of menopause. Maternal mortality rates were strongly associated with age–disparate relationships, increasing by 275 per 100,000 live births for each additional year in the age disparity. Phytolacca dodecandra (L' Herit), or 'Endod', is one of the widely known medicinal plants in Ethiopia. Berries of the endod have been used as a detergent for centuries. The present study was aimed to test the hepatoprotective effects of the plant against acetaminophen (APAP)-induced liver injury in rats. Mice of either sex were used for oral acute toxicity tests and APAP-induced lethality tests. Hepatoprotective experiments were done on male rats using 2 g/kg of APAP to induce liver damage. Liver enzymes, total bilirubin (TB), and lipid profile were determined. Liver tissues were also examined histopathologically to see a morphologic change in the control and experiment groups. The protective effect of the plant extract was also tested through sodium pentobarbital (SPB)-induced sleeping time. A significant increase in serum levels of liver enzymes, TB, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglycerides (TGs) was seen from oral administration of 2 g/kg APAP. Total cholesterol (TC) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels were decreased. Serum levels of all parameters were reversed to normal after administration of silymarin 100 mg/kg and, 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg doses of the extract. A significant dose-dependent hepatoprotective effect of Phytolacca dodecandra Methanol Root Extract (PDME) was seen in terms of LDL. Histopathological investigations and SPB-induced sleeping time confirmed the findings of biochemical analysis. Background: A few studies have documented the long-term results of chondrocyte-based procedures for the treatment of patellofemoral cartilage lesions, but specific results are lacking after matrix-assisted autologous chondrocyte transplantation (MACT) for patellar and trochlear lesions. Purpose: To document the clinical results of MACT for the treatment of patellar and trochlear chondral defects at long-term follow-up. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: A total of 44 patients were prospectively evaluated after MACT for patellofemoral lesions. There were 24 patients affected by patellar lesions, 16 by trochlear lesions, and 4 with both patellar and trochlear defects. Clinical outcomes were analyzed using the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) subjective form, EuroQol visual analog scale, and Tegner score for sport activity level before surgery and at follow-up time points of 5, 10, and a minimum of 15 years (mean final follow-up, 17.6 ± 1.6 years). A Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed to examine the survival to failure. Failure was defined as the need for a second surgery because of the persistence of symptoms related to the primary defect. Results: An overall significant improvement was documented from baseline to the last follow-up. The IKDC subjective score improved in the trochlear group from 41.0 ± 13.3 at baseline to 83.9 ± 21.6 at 5 years (P <.005), remaining stable up to the final follow-up (81.3 ± 20.5). In the patellar group, the IKDC subjective score improved from 36.1 ± 14.4 at baseline to 72.3 ± 17.5 at 5 years (P <.005), remaining stable up to the final follow-up (62.0 ± 20.3). Patients with trochlear lesions presented higher IKDC subjective scores compared with those with patellar lesions at 5 (P =.029), 10 (P =.023), and ≥15 years (P =.006) of follow-up. Similar trends were documented for the Tegner score, while no differences were documented for the EuroQol visual analog scale score between patellar and trochlear lesions. There were 4 failures (9.1%) during the follow-up period. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis did not show statistically significant differences between trochlear and patellar lesions. Conclusion: This hyaluronic acid–based MACT technique offered positive and durable clinical outcomes with a low failure rate at long-term follow-up in patients affected by patellofemoral cartilage lesions. However, trochlear and patellar lesions demonstrated a notable difference in terms of clinical findings and sport activity level, with significantly higher results for patients with trochlear lesions but less satisfactory outcomes for patients with patellar lesions. Purpose: This article explored Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge of Complementary and Alternative Interventions (CAI). Method: We utilized a cross-sectional online survey among a sample of 193 LCSWs. Results: Approximately 60% of LCSWs assessed for and utilized CAI professionally, and 90% personally utilized CAI. LCSWs had moderately positive beliefs, neutral attitudes, and high baseline knowledge of CAI. Age and years of practice were the only significant correlates, and the only significant predictor for assessment and utilization of CAI was positive attitudes. Discussion: As the largest group of mental health providers, we found that it is vital for LCSWs to have a solid understanding of CAI to provide effective and safe services to the clients they serve. It is hoped that the results of this study will serve as a starting point for future research on CAI among social workers, with the goal of enhancing client-centered practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reports a longitudinal study comparing religiosity among two cohorts of Indian older adults—those who age in the homeland of India (AIH cohort) and immigrants (to the USA) or diaspora older adults (DOA). Results indicated that AIH and DOA cohorts' religiosity outcomes were comparable at baseline but there was a statistically significant increase in all outcomes of the DOA cohort at subsequent time points. Women and single older adults in both the cohorts had higher religiosity scores at baseline. Religiosity scores were higher among those in the DOA cohort who migrated following marital disruption (widowhood, divorce) or grandchild birth and lived with adult immigrant children and their families. The immigration process can have an impact on religious orientation of older adults and place is a significant variable impacting religiosity possibly for augmenting the sense of self, acquire social capital and preserve cultural identity in the foreign land. Background: It is necessary to better understand the structural characteristics of the supraspinatus tendon and associated muscle after rotator cuff repair and in the event of retear. Purpose: To study structural differences between the repaired and contralateral shoulders 1 year after rotator cuff repair in patients who received either progressive exercise therapy (PR) or usual care (UC) in a randomized controlled trial and to investigate whether there was interaction with tendon retear and limb dominance. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2. Methods: Patients with surgically repaired traumatic full-thickness rotator cuff tears involving the supraspinatus tendon were included. After surgery, they were randomized to PR or UC (active from postoperative week 2 or 6, respectively). The subacromial structures (acromiohumeral distance, supraspinatus tendon thickness, and vascularity) and the supraspinatus muscle thickness were examined with ultrasound at the 1-year follow-up. Results: A total of 79 patients were included. The characteristics of the 2 intervention groups (PR and UC) were comparable, including the Western Ontario Rotator Cuff Index score and number of retears. The authors found significantly thinner supraspinatus tendon (PR, P <.001; UC, P =.003) and reduced acromiohumeral distance (PR, P =.023; UC, P =.025) in the repaired versus the contralateral shoulders in both intervention groups. For neovascularization, there was no interlimb difference in either of the groups or between groups (PR vs UC). In patients with intact tendons, there was no interlimb difference in the muscle thickness, but in patients with tendon retear the muscle was significantly thinner on the repaired side (P =.024 and P <.001, respectively). When the dominant supraspinatus tendon was repaired (both groups), it was significantly thinner than the nondominant healthy tendon, but this difference was not seen when the nondominant supraspinatus tendon was repaired (P =.006). Conclusion: One year after rotator cuff surgery, the repaired supraspinatus tendon was significantly thinner and the corresponding acromiohumeral distance was reduced. In patients with retear, the supraspinatus muscle was significantly thinner on the repaired side and early initiation of tendon-loading exercises did not affect these findings. Background: Although pediatric medial epicondylar fractures and apophysitis are well studied, patterns of subapophyseal avulsion and ligamentous injuries of the medial elbow in this population merit investigation to inform optimal treatment strategies. Purpose: To describe the occurrence and demographic correlates of ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) avulsion and soft tissue injuries of the pediatric and adolescent elbow. Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: An institutional review board–approved review was conducted to identify consecutive patients with medial elbow injuries treated in a tertiary pediatric sports medicine practice between 2016 and 2021. Radiographs were obtained during injury evaluation, and patients with nondisplaced medial epicondylar apophysitis and complete epicondylar fracture were excluded, resulting in 150 patients with soft tissue injuries occurring distal to the medial epicondyle apophysis (subapophyseal) for study. Radiographs were evaluated for bony avulsion of the UCL from either the medial epicondyle proximally or the ulnar sublime tubercle distally. Injuries without radiographic evidence of bony avulsion, but with clinical examination findings consistent with ligamentous injury, were classified as radiographically negative UCL injuries, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed to further evaluate these injuries if moderate to severe medial swelling of the elbow or significant concern for medial structural injury was present on examination. These MRI scans were evaluated to classify the UCL injury and assess for periosteal or cartilaginous avulsions. Results: A total of 150 patients (mean age, 12.5 ± 3.4 years; 70 female), 55% (150/274) of the entire medial elbow injury population, had a subapophyseal injury. Of these patients, 62 had a bony avulsion detected on radiograph, and 88 had a radiographically negative injury. In addition to the 62 radiographic avulsions, the 61 MRI scans obtained on those radiographically negative injuries revealed 33 complete UCL disruptions, resulting in 63.3% (95/150) of patients sustaining a complete ligamentous disruption. With the MRI scans, 37 (61%) cases of cartilaginous or periosteal avulsion of the UCL were diagnosed. Overall, 66% of all 150 subapophyseal injuries had a bony, cartilaginous, or periosteal UCL avulsion. Patients with cartilaginous (mean age, 10.3 years) and bony (mean age, 10.6 years) avulsions were younger than those with central ligament injury (mean age, 14.2 years) or periosteal (mean age, 14.2 years) avulsions (P =.005). There was a significant association between the mechanism of injury and the location of UCL tear identified on MRI scans: traumatic falls were associated with distal tears, and throwing injuries were associated with proximal tears (P <.001). Conclusion: UCL central ligament and avulsion lesions may be frequently diagnosed after injury to the pediatric medial elbow, the majority of which are complete injuries, and may require MRI for diagnosis. The mechanism of injury may predict the location of ligamentous injury, and osteocartilaginous avulsions are more likely to present at younger ages than injuries to the soft tissue of the UCL or periosteum. Background: A major limitation of osteochondral allografts (OCA) is the deterioration of cartilage health associated with cell death during prolonged storage. However, little is known about the mechanisms that contribute to chondrocyte death during storage. Purpose/Hypothesis: This study aimed to determine whether bioactive lipid metabolites accumulate in the storage media of OCA and whether they are associated with a loss of chondrocyte viability during prolonged storage. It was hypothesized that free fatty acids (FFAs) would accumulate over time in the storage media of OCA and adversely affect cartilage health during storage. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: A group of 21 (n = 6-8 OCA/treatment group) fresh human hemicondylar OCA tissues and media were analyzed after 7, 28, and 68 days of prolonged cold (4°C) storage. Targeted mass spectrometry analysis was used to quantify bioactive FFAs, as well as primary (lipid hydroperoxide [ROOH]) and secondary (malondialdehyde) lipid oxidation products. Chondrocyte viability was measured using a fluorescence-based live/dead assay and confocal microscopy. Results: The concentration of all targeted fatty acid metabolites in storage media was significantly increased with increased cold storage time (P <.05). ROOH was significantly higher on day 28 of cold storage. No difference in secondary ROOH products in storage media was observed. Chondrocyte viability significantly declined in both the en face and the vertical cross-sectional analysis with increased cold storage time and inversely correlated with fatty acid metabolites (P <.05). Conclusion: It is well established that elevated levels of certain FFAs and lipid oxidation products can alter cell function and cause cell death via lipotoxicity and other mechanisms. This work is the first to identify elevated levels of FFA metabolites and primary oxidation lipid products in the storage media from clinical OCA. The concentrations of FFA metabolites were measured at levels (>100 µM) known to induce cell death and were directly correlated with chondrocyte viability. Background: Injuries to the deep medial collateral ligament (dMCL) and partial superficial MCL (psMCL) can cause anteromedial rotatory instability; however, the contribution of each these injuries in restraining anteromedial rotatory instability and the effect on the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) load remain unknown. Purpose: To investigate the contributions of the different MCL structures in restraining tibiofemoral motion and to evaluate the load through the ACL after MCL injury, especially after combined dMCL/psMCL injury. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Sixteen fresh-frozen human cadaveric knees were tested using a 6 degrees of freedom robotic simulator. Tibiofemoral kinematic parameters were recorded at 0°, 30°, 60°, and 90° of knee flexion for the following measurements: 8-N·m valgus rotation, 4-N·m external tibial rotation (ER), 4-N·m internal tibial rotation, and a combined 89-N anterior tibial translation and 4-N·m ER for both anteromedial rotation (AMR) and anteromedial translation (AMT). The kinematic parameters of the 3 different MCL injuries (dMCL; dMCL/psMCL; dMCL/superficial MCL (sMCL)) were recorded and reapplied either in an ACL-deficient joint (load sharing) or before and after cutting the ACL (ACL load). The loads were calculated by applying the principle of superposition. Results: The dMCL had the largest effect on reducing the force/torque during ER, AMR, and AMT in extension and the psMCL injury at 30° to 90° of knee flexion (P <.05). In a comparison of the load through the ACL when the MCL was intact, the ACL load increased by 46% and 127% after dMCL injury and combined dMCL/psMCL injury, respectively, at 30° of knee flexion during ER. In valgus rotation, a significant increase in ACL load was seen only at 90° of knee flexion. Conclusion: The psMCL injury made the largest contribution to the reduction of net force/torque during AMR/AMT at 30° to 90° of flexion. Concomitant dMCL/psMCL injury increased the ACL load, mainly during ER. Clinical Relevance: If a surgical procedure is being considered to treat anteromedial rotatory instability, then the procedure should focus on restoring sMCL function, as injury to this structure causes a major loss of the knee joint's capacity to restrain AMR/AMT. Background: Stress negatively affects well-being, relating to poor physical, emotional, and occupational outcomes for health care personnel. Health care professionals faced extreme stressors in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, making occupational stress relief a top priority for hospital administrators. Many health systems employ specially trained spiritual support staff as one strategy to alleviate work-related stressors. It is unclear whether health care personnels' perceptions of the availability of spiritual care staff influence self-reported stress. Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore relationships between perceived stress and perceptions of availability of spiritual support among acute care health care personnel. Methods: This study analyzed cross-sectional, survey-based data collected between February and April 2022 from 1352 interdisciplinary health care staff working in a large, nonprofit Catholic health system in the Western United States. Bivariate tests and multivariate linear regression models were conducted to test for factors influencing perceived stress. Results: Results support that high stress was prevalent in the sample. Perceived availability of spiritual support staff in the hospital and seeking coworker and professional support for work-related stress all independently influence stress in this population when controlling for confounders. Conclusions: Stress of health care personnel may be influenced by the perceived availability of specially trained spiritual support staff. Hospital administrators should advocate for spiritual support staff availability in all health care settings as one strategy to mitigate occupational stress that health care professionals may experience through providing high-stakes patient care. Despite the notion that sexual consent is either granted or refused, its communication can sometimes be ambiguous. This uncertainty stems from the tendency to rely on implicit, nonverbal cues to indicate consent. Without clear, explicit communication, people might be encouraged to rely upon contextual information when assessing whether a sexual encounter was consensual. Perceived levels of intimacy and familiarity in a relationship might influence these perceptions, such that prior intimacy might lead to ambiguously communicated consent being interpreted as more consensual. Gender roles can dictate the behaviors expected in a sexual encounter, with female-initiated sexual violence against men potentially being perceived as more consensual than the inverse. The current study examined how relationship type (Experiments 1 and 2) and gender pairing (Experiment 2) influenced participants' perceptions of how consensual various sexual encounters were. Participants read a series of vignettes in which sexual consent was verbally granted, verbally rejected, or inferred using nonverbal cues. Additionally, the dyads' relationships were either described as dating, friends, or strangers. Following vignette presentation, participants provided judgments regarding how consensual the interactions were. Experiment 2 expanded upon this by manipulating the gender of the initiators and targets. When consent was not clearly indicated, more established relationships were associated with higher ratings of perceived consent. Male targets were attributed more responsibility for sexual interactions, and they were also believed to want nonconsensual sex more than female targets. Background: The end of treatment (EOT) is a significant time point along the childhood cancer treatment–survivorship continuum, and is recognized as a time when childhood cancer survivors (CCS) and their families experience significant vulnerability and stress. There is a call by families and healthcare professionals alike for standardized, comprehensive EOT services to successfully navigate through this transition period and better cope with posttreatment medical, physical, and social-emotional issues. Method: A multidisciplinary team of pediatric oncology health care professionals developed and implemented a two-session psychoeducational program to address these EOT needs. To evaluate the Shooting for the STARS (Survivors Tackling All Roadblocks Successfully) EOT Transition Program, a pretest–posttest repeated measures design was utilized. A convenience sample of 47 parents/caregivers and 29 CCS completed surveys before, during, and after the EOT services were received. Analysis of relationships and changes over time was conducted using Spearman-ranked correlations and Friedman tests, a nonparametric repeated measures analysis of variance. Results: All respondents reported program satisfaction, with 94.7% feeling somewhat or very prepared for ending treatment. Participants' distress levels tended to decrease over time. Parent/caregiver-reported levels of CCS' anxiety, fatigue, pain interference, and physical mobility significantly improved over the time period during which families participated in the Shooting for the STARS Program. Discussion: This nurse-led, evidence-based program was determined to be feasible and acceptable. It may contribute to improved health-related quality of life and decrease distress over time. Introduction: Estimates of the worldwide increase in amputees raises the awareness to solve long-standing problems. Understanding the functional brain modifications after a lower limb amputation (LLA) is one of the first steps towards proposing new rehabilitation approaches. Functional modifications in the central nervous system due the amputation could be involved in prosthesis use failures and Phantom Limb Pain (PLP), increasing costs and overwhelming the health services. Objective: This study analyses orphan primary motor area (M1-Orphan) hemodynamic and metabolic behaviour, which previously controlled the limb that was amputated, in comparison with the M1-Preserved, responsible for the intact limb (IL) during phantom limb imagery moving during Mirror Therapy (MT), compared to Isolated Intact Limb Movement Task (I-ILMT). Methodology: A case-control study with unilateral traumatic LLA with moderate PLP who measured [oxy-Hb] and [deoxy-Hb] in the M1 area by Functional Near InfraredSpectroscopy (fNIRS) during the real (I-ILMT) and MT task. Results: Sixty-five patients, with 67.69% of men, young (40.32 ± 12.91), 65.63% amputated due motorcycle accidents, 4.71 ± 7.38 years ago, predominantly above the knee (57.14%). The M1 activation in the orphan cortex did not differ from the activation in the intact cortex during MT (P >.05). Conclusion: The perception of the Phantom limb moving or intact limb moving is metabolically equivalent in M1, even in the absence of a limb. This investigation aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of NeoLight's Skylife phototherapy device for the treatment of hyperbilirubinemia. A prospective, two-arm, randomized, unblinded controlled investigation compared total serum bilirubin (TSB) levels at baseline and discharge for a new phototherapy device (Skylife) with an existing phototherapy treatment in newborn infants. The repeated-measures analysis of variance (RM-ANOVA) indicated a significant main effect for the treatment condition, F (1, 54) = 4.041, P =.049. Post hoc findings showed that the Skylife group had significantly lower TSB levels following treatment (n = 28, Mean = 11.36, SD = 1.69) compared with the standard of care group (n = 28, Mean = 12.37, SD = 2.08), t (54) = 2.01, P =.049). The Skylife phototherapy device was as effective as the currently used therapy, with a shift toward a more rapid decline in bilirubin levels. Using this device may potentially decrease the length of therapy and hospitalization. Low health literacy (LHL) significantly impacts patients' ability to participate actively in their healthcare. Registered nurses (RNs) play a crucial role in identifying LHL and addressing patient knowledge gaps and skill deficits. This correlational study examined the relationship between RNs' predictions of patients' health literacy levels (HLL) and the actual HLL of a predominately Hispanic patient population. In addition, personal factors (i.e., demographics) were analyzed to determine their influence on the nurse's predictions and patients' HLL. Data were collected from 84 participant patient–nurse couplets admitted to a medical-surgical unit in a rural setting located on the United States–Mexico border. In addition to demographic information collected via survey, RNs were asked to predict their patient's health literacy abilities while the Newest Vital Sign, a health literacy assessment tool, was deployed to determine the actual HLL of patients participating in the study. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t -tests, and chi-square tests while a Spearman correlational model was used to examine the relationship between predicted HLL and actual HLL. Finally, a logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between personal factors and HL data for RNs and patients. Analysis of the data revealed that RNs consistently overestimated patients' abilities, as evidenced by the disparity between patients' actual HLL (mean 1.71) and predicted HLL (mean 4.26) by RNs, with a moderately strong positive relationship (rs =.418). Notably, higher academic preparation and years of experience did not enhance the RNs' ability to identify LHL while the highest level of education completed was the only statistically significant predictor of adequate health literacy in the patient population sampled. These findings emphasize the need to prioritize effective health literacy education in RN academic preparation and clinical practice to support the detection of LHL when a standardized health literacy assessment tool is not utilized in the clinical setting. Our purpose in this study was to determine the effects of a virtual reality intervention delivering specific motivational motor learning manipulations of either autonomy support (AS) or enhanced expectancies (EE) on frontal plane single-leg squatting kinematics. We allocated 45 participants (21 male, 24 female) demonstrating knee, hip, and trunk frontal plane mechanics associated with elevated anterior cruciate ligament injury risk to one of three groups (control, AS, or EE). Participants mimicked an avatar performing five sets of eight repetitions of exemplary single-leg squats. AS participants were given the added option of choosing the color of their avatar. EE participants received real-time biofeedback in the form of green highlights on the avatar that remained on as long as the participant maintained pre-determined 'safe' frontal plane mechanics. We measured peak frontal plane knee, hip, and trunk angles before (baseline) and immediately following (post) the intervention. The control group demonstrated greater increases in knee abduction angle (Δ = +2.3°) than did the AS (Δ = +0.1°) and EE groups (Δ = −0.4°) (p =.003; η2p =.28). All groups demonstrated increased peak hip adduction (p =.01, ηp2 =.18) (control Δ = +1.5°; AS Δ = +3.2°; EE Δ = +0.7°). Hip adduction worsened in all groups. Purpose: The current study aimed to evaluate the telic-paratelic tendency and heart rate variability in athlete participants from different sports activities. Methods: We assigned 117 healthy participants (M age = 20, SD = 3 years) into three groups according to their training activity: power-trained (PT; n=43), endurance-trained (ET; n=36), and healthy untrained individuals (n=38). We assessed their telic-paratelic tendencies with the validated Telic Dominance Scale and their autonomic nervous system activity with heart rate variability (HRV) analyses. Results: Our findings revealed no significant differences in the telic-paratelic tendencies between ET and PT groups. However, significant differences were observed between athletes and untrained individuals (p = 0.001). Indeed, compared to untrained participants, ET and PT athletes had a greater telic tendency (both p = 0.001), were more focused on planning orientation (ET: p = 0.003; PT: p =0.001), and less often avoided arousal or activation (For ET 31% and for PT 26% of participants). The paratelic tendency was more important in untrained individuals, with most of these participants lacking in serious mindedness and planning. In addition, we found higher HRV in paratelic ET athletes (SDNN p = 0.050, LF p = 0.022, and LF/HF p = 0.031) compared to their telic peers. Conclusion: our results suggest that sport activity did not influence the telic-paratelic tendency. Nevertheless, this tendency differentiates trained from untrained participants. Background/Purpose: We aimed to investigate whether there is an interaction between life-space assessment (LSA) and movement control during one-leg standing on bone strength on the non-fractured side in patients with hip fracture. Methods: Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied for osteoporosis parameter to examine the interaction and main effects of LSA and movement control during one-leg standing. Results: Two-way ANOVA revealed significant interaction and main effects of LSA and movement control during one-leg standing on bone mineral density (BMD) and Z -score. In parameters of hip structural analysis (HSA), the interaction and main effect of movement control during one-leg standing were detected only in cross-sectional area (CSA). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that both high LSA and good movement control during one-leg standing are necessary to maintain or improve some parameters of bone strength, such as BMD (neck and total hip), Z-score (neck and total hip), and CSA. Introduction: Globally, healthcare organizations have transitioned from paper-based documentation to electronic health records (EHR), including in Saudi Arabia. However, the adoption of EHR at the national level in Saudi Arabia needs more attention. Thus, this study aimed to determine the workflow integration of EHR and associated factors. Objectives: The specific aims were to examine the level of EHR use and workflow integration among nurses, to determine the differences in EHR use and workflow integration based on nurses' demographic characteristics, and to determine the association between the predictive factors and EHR workflow integration. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, correlational descriptive study. The data were collected from 293 nurses using the convenience sampling method. The participating nurses completed a questionnaire that included two measures: the Information System Use Survey and the Workflow Integration Survey (WIS). The data were analyzed using descriptive and multivariate statistics with SPSS software. Results: The nurses had a positive perception of EHR use and workflow. The EHR use scores differed based on workplace (P <.01), education level (P <.05), and area of practice (P <.001). Similarly, the EHR workflow integration scores varied according to workplace (P <.05), education level (P <.05), and area of practice (P <.001). Education level and workplace significantly predicted information system use. Furthermore, education level and information system use significantly predicted the EHR integration into nurses' workflow. Conclusion: The nurses expressed a greater perceived use of EHR regarding the integrated health information system, which was a predictor of EHR integration into nurses' workflow. Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a crippling epidemic that is predicted to affect over 15 million people worldwide by the year 2050. Symptoms such as refusal to cooperate, impaired communication and cognition, and agitation and anxiety can play a large part in the difficulties that surround caring for an AD patient. There are medications that are marketed to treat AD symptoms, but many have harmful side effects. Holistic methods, such as music therapy, are gaining attention for their ease of implementation and limited side effects. Aim: The purpose of this project was to implement a music therapy intervention for people with AD in hospice and evaluate the levels of agitation experienced by the patient. Method: The study was conducted over a period of eight weeks. Music therapy was administered nightly for 20 minutes by caregivers and the Pittsburgh Agitation Scale was completed at the beginning of the study, at four weeks into the study, and at the completion of the study. Results: The intervention was found to be significant in reducing aberrant vocalization, motor agitation, aggressiveness, and resisting care. Conclusion: Based on the findings, music therapy may be useful as a holistic intervention for decreasing agitation in individuals with AD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The treatment of bony glenoid defects after anteroinferior shoulder dislocation currently depends on the amount of glenoid bone loss (GBL). Recent studies have described the glenoid concavity as an essential factor for glenohumeral stability. The role of glenoid concavity in the presence of soft tissue and muscle forces is still unknown. Hypothesis: Glenoid concavity would have a major impact on glenohumeral stability in an active-assisted biomechanical model including soft tissue and the rotator cuff's compression forces. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: In 8 human shoulder specimens, individual coordinate systems were calculated based on anatomic landmarks. The glenoid concavity was measured biomechanically and based on computed tomography. Static load was applied to the rotator cuff tendons and the deltoid muscle. In a robotic test setup, anteriorly directed force was applied to the humeral head until translation of 5 mm (Nant) was achieved. Nant was used as a parameter indicating shoulder stability. This was performed in the following testing stages: (1) intact joint, (2) labral lesion, (3) 10% GBL, and (4) 20% GBL. The 8 specimens were divided equally into 2 subgroups (low concavity [LC] versus high concavity [HC]), with 4 specimens each, according to the previously measured concavity. Results: Anterior glenohumeral stability was highly correlated with the native glenoid concavity (R 2 = 0.8). In the testing stages 1 to 3, we found a significantly higher mean stability in the HC subgroup compared with the LC subgroup (P ≤.0142). The HC subgroup still showed higher absolute Nant values with 20% GBL; however, there was no significant difference from the LC subgroup. The loss of stability in 20% GBL was correlated with the initial concavity (R 2 = 0.86). Thus, a higher loss of Nant in the HC subgroup was observed (P =.0049). Conclusion: In an active-assisted model with intact soft tissue surrounding and muscular compression forces, the glenoid concavity correlates with shoulder stability. In bony defects, loss of concavity is an essential factor causing instability. Due to their significantly higher native stability, glenoids with HC can tolerate a higher amount of GBL. Clinical Relevance: Glenoid concavity should be considered in an individualized treatment of bony glenoid defects. Economic empowerment (EE) services promote survivors' economic stability and well-being. A target for intervention and prevention, then, is to offer more effective EE services. The study purpose was to develop a clearer picture of what EE services agencies offer, and how prepared staff are to provide these services. We collected data from 154 providers. Survivors most requested, and agencies most frequently provided, housing services. EE services offered did not differ by agency location, staff size, or number of clients. Background: Occupational safety and health (OSH) professionals increasingly need interdisciplinary collaborative practice competencies to respond to complex worker safety, health, and well-being risks. Effective collaboration with non-OSH-trained professionals (e.g., health promotion, human resources) is critical for planning integrated interventions that address work and non-work risks, consistent with a " Total Worker Health " (TWH) approach. Interprofessional education (IPE) pedagogy offers skill-building for interdisciplinary collaboration, but little attention has been given to IPE in OSH education and training literature. The goal of this study was to assess OSH professionals' perceptions about IPE to guide application in postgraduate TWH education. Methods: The mixed-methods study involved 210 U.S. professionals in safety (31%), industrial hygiene (16%), occupational nursing (12%) and medicine (11%), and related disciplines (30%). Participants completed a 12-item Readiness for Interprofessional Education Scale (RIPLS) adapted for TWH. Nineteen survey-takers also participated in virtual focus groups to share opinions about IPE benefits, barriers, and desirable course features. Findings: Occupational safety and health professionals reported high overall readiness for IPE (RIPLS, 4.45 ± 0.47), endorsing IPE for interdisciplinary skill-building. Salient IPE motivators were learning new perspectives from diverse disciplines and industries; gaining new subject expertise; developing common ground across disciplines; and learning TWH best practices. Participants recommended case studies to practice interdisciplinary problem-solving through group work. Conclusions/Application to Practice: Interprofessional education is a promising pedagogy for OSH continuing education to promote interdisciplinary collaboration skills needed for TWH practice in the workplace. Background: Little is known about the health and well-being of U.S. correctional nurses. To protect correctional nurses, a better understanding of organizational characteristics, job stress, and well-being must be undertaken. Method: A cross-sectional design was used in the form of an online survey. Correctional nurses were conveniently recruited using national listservs and snowball sampling. Variables were measured with the Health & Safety Executive Management Standards Indicator Tool, Nurse Wellbeing Index, and the Perceived Stress Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and analyses of variance. Findings: Two hundred seventy participants (142 registered nurses, 83 licensed practical nurses/licensed vocational nurses, and 42 advanced practice nurses) completed the survey. Job stress scored moderate (M = 16.26, SD = 7.14), and well-being levels were just below the risk for adverse events (M = 1.8, SD = 3.06). Lower scores were noted for managerial support (M = 3.13, SD = 0.35) and job demands (M = 3.56, SD = 0.92), but slightly better for job control (M = 3.57, SD = 0.77), peer support (M = 3.85, SD = 0.64), and workplace relationships (M = 3.73, SD = 0.95). Conclusions: Significant differences between organizational characteristics, job stress, and well-being were found across nursing licensure, workplace environments, biological sex, and employment through state or private agencies. Registered nurses working in U.S. prisons experienced the highest job stress and worse well-being. The purpose of this study was to identify kindergarteners at risk for language and reading disorders and to determine predictors. A representative sample of 311 kindergarteners in general education classrooms in the U.S. Midwest were assessed with the Well Screening in fall, winter, and spring. Groups were compared using analysis of variance (ANOVA) on measures of memory, phonological awareness, retrieval speed, social communication, and letter knowledge. Children at risk for reading disorders performed most poorly on phonological awareness, whereas children at risk for language disorders struggled most with social communication. Retrieval speed alone was not a reliable predictor of reading risk in kindergarten. High performers scored best on working memory. The high-performing reading group outscored the high-performing language group on letter knowledge. Phonological awareness distinguished the high-performing reading group but not the high-performing language group from their non-high-performing classmates. Background: There is little evidence of the biomechanical performance of medial collateral ligament (MCL) reconstructions for restoring stability to the MCL-deficient knee regarding valgus, external rotation (ER), and anteromedial rotatory instability (AMRI). Hypothesis: A short isometric reconstruction will better restore stability than a longer superficial MCL (sMCL) reconstruction, and an additional deep MCL (dMCL) graft will better control ER and AMRI than single-strand reconstructions. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Nine cadaveric human knees were tested in a kinematics rig that allowed tibial loading while the knee was flexed-extended 0° to 100°. Optical markers were placed on the femur and tibia and displacements were measured using a stereo camera system. The knee was tested intact, and then after MCL (sMCL + dMCL) transection, and loaded in anterior tibial translation (ATT), ER, varus-valgus, and combined ATT + ER (AMRI loading). Five different isometric MCL reconstructions were tested: isolated long sMCL, a short construct, each with and without dMCL addition, and isolated dMCL reconstruction, using an 8 mm–wide synthetic graft. Results: MCL deficiency caused an increase in ER of 4° at 0° of flexion (P =.271) up to 14° at 100° of flexion (P =.002), and valgus laxity increased by 5° to 8° between 0° and 100° of flexion (P <.024 at 0°-90°). ATT did not increase significantly in isolated MCL deficiency (P >.999). All 5 reconstructions restored native stability across the arc of flexion apart from the isolated long sMCL, which demonstrated residual ER instability (P ≤.047 vs other reconstructions). Conclusion: All tested techniques apart from the isolated long sMCL graft are satisfactory in the context of restoring the valgus, ER, and AMRI stability to the MCL-deficient knee in a cadaveric model. Clinical Relevance: Contemporary MCL reconstruction techniques fail to control ER and therefore AMRI as they use a long sMCL graft and do not address the dMCL. This study compares 5 MCL reconstruction techniques. Both long and short isometric constructs other than the long sMCL achieved native stability in valgus and ER/AMRI. Double-strand reconstructions (sMCL + dMCL) tended to provide more stability. This study shows which reconstructions demonstrate the best biomechanical performance, informs surgical reconstruction techniques for AMRI, and questions the efficacy of current popular techniques. Objective: To assess the efficacy of injecting various amounts of fluid into the shoulder joints for capsule distension in patients with adhesive capsulitis. Design: A randomized controlled trial. Setting: Outpatient clinic of a tertiary care centre. Participants: Eighty-four patients with adhesive capsulitis underwent a baseline (time0), 6 weeks (time1), and 12 weeks (time2) follow-up after hydrodilitation. Intervention: Group 1 (n = 42) received 20 ml of lidocaine, steroid, and saline hydrodilatation via posterior glenohumeral recess, while Group 2 (n = 42) received 10 ml of lidocaine, steroid, and saline hydrodilitation. Main measures: The primary outcome was the visual analogue scale for pain. The secondary outcomes were shoulder pain and disability index (SPADI) and ROM of the shoulder. Results: There was a significant reduce in VAS scores for pain, SPADI scores, and increased shoulder ROM in both groups over time; however, the group-by-time interactions for any of the outcomes between groups were not significant except VAS pain in motion. Post-hoc pairwise analysis of the marginal effect of time and group showed that the significant difference of VAS in motion is due to time effect: time1 vs time0 (95% CI −4.09 to −2.68), time2 vs time0 (−4.21 to −2.77), and time2 vs time1 (−0.83 to 0.63), without between-group difference: group 1 vs group 2 (−0.38 to 0.59). Conclusion: Our study suggests hydrodilatation achieved an optimal effect at time1 for patients with adhesive capsulitis in both groups, and adding more saline offers additional benefits in flexion and external roatation until time2. Objectives: To examine the effects of acupuncture and therapeutic exercise alone and in combination on temporomandibular joint symptoms in tension-type headache and to evaluate the potential interaction of existing temporomandibular dysfunction on the success of headache treatment. Design: Pre-planned secondary analysis of a randomized controlled, non-blinded trial. Setting: Outpatient clinic of a German university hospital. Subjects: Ninety-six Participants with frequent episodic or chronic tension-type headache were randomized to one of four treatment groups. Interventions: Six weeks of acupuncture or therapeutic exercise either as monotherapies or in combination, or usual care. Follow-up at 3 and 6 months. Main measures: Subjective temporomandibular dysfunction symptoms were measured using the Functional Questionnaire Masticatory Organ, and the influence of this sum score and objective initial dental examination on the efficacy of headache treatment interventions was analyzed. Results: Temporomandibular dysfunction score improved in all intervention groups at 3-month follow-up (usual care: 0.05 [SD 1.435]; acupuncture: −5 [SD 1.436]; therapeutic exercise: −4 [SD 1.798]; combination: −3 [SD 1.504]; P = 0.03). After 6 months, only acupuncture (−6 [SD 1.736]) showed a significant improvement compared to the usual care group (P < 0.01). Subjective temporomandibular dysfunction symptoms had no overall influence on headache treatment. Conclusions: Only acupuncture had long-lasting positive effects on the symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction. Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the attitude of nursing students in providing health care to refugees due to cultural differences and to reveal individual factors (age, gender, marital status) affecting negative attitudes. Method: This cross-sectional descriptive correlational study was conducted to determine the intercultural competence of nursing students and their attitudes toward immigrants in Turkey. The sample of the study consisted of 316 nursing students. Results: The Negative Attitude Toward Immigrants Scale scores of the participants were high, however, the intercultural competence level of the health professionals was positive. A weak negative statistically significant relationship was found the Negative Attitude Toward Immigrants Scale and the Cross-Cultural Competence of Healthcare Professionals Scale (r = −.247, p =.000). Conclusion: Our study revealed that nursing students have negative attitudes toward immigrants, and factors such as gender and caring for patients from a different ethnic origin, discomfort in providing care impacted their attitudes. Students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) characteristically experience academic difficulties. There is growing evidence that the continuum from academic competence to underachievement is partially explained by executive function (EF; neurocognitive attention-regulation processes) and stress. Yet, there is scarce research investigating these relationships among students with or at risk for EBD, especially during the elevated stress and risk period of middle school, and particularly among racially/ethnically under-represented groups. Therefore, with 118 U.S. middle schoolers with or at risk for EBD and typical peers (70% Hispanic/Latinx; 25% Black), we examined group differences and relationships among perceived family, peer, and school stress, EF, and academic outcomes. When compared with their typical peers, students with or at risk for EBD scored lower on EF and academic tasks. For all students, higher EF predicted better academic functioning. Background: Restoration of osteochondral defects is critical, because osteoarthritis (OA) can arise. Hypothesis: Overexpression of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) via recombinant adeno-associated viral (rAAV) vectors (rAAV-IGF-1) would improve osteochondral repair and reduce parameters of early perifocal OA in sheep after 6 months in vivo. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Osteochondral defects were created in the femoral trochlea of adult sheep and treated with rAAV-IGF-1 or rAAV- lacZ (control) (24 defects in 6 knees per group). After 6 months in vivo, osteochondral repair and perifocal OA were assessed by well-established macroscopic, histological, and immunohistochemical scoring systems as well as biochemical and micro–computed tomography evaluations. Results: Application of rAAV-IGF-1 led to prolonged (6 months) IGF-1 overexpression without adverse effects, maintaining a significantly superior overall cartilage repair, together with significantly improved defect filling, extracellular matrix staining, cellular morphology, and surface architecture compared with rAAV- lacZ. Expression of type II collagen significantly increased and that of type I collagen significantly decreased. Subchondral bone repair and tidemark formation were significantly improved, and subchondral bone plate thickness and subarticular spongiosa mineral density returned to normal. The OA parameters of perifocal structure, cell cloning, and matrix staining were significantly better preserved upon rAAV-IGF-1 compared with rAAV- lacZ. Novel mechanistic associations between parameters of osteochondral repair and OA were identified. Conclusion: Local rAAV-mediated IGF-1 overexpression enhanced osteochondral repair and ameliorated parameters of perifocal early OA. Background: Recent studies have investigated the effect of psychological factors on return to sport (RTS), but none has tested the existence of psychological profiles linked to reinjury anxiety and its links with RTS and reinjury. Purpose: To assess the effect of different psychological profiles on RTS and reinjury. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2. Methods: The study screened patients who were involved in all types of sports for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (hamstring and patellar tendon autografts). All participants were included during the RTS phase (90-180 days after ACL reconstruction). Reinjury anxiety, fear of reinjury, kinesiophobia, perceived stress, anxiety, depression, knee confidence, self-esteem, optimism, coping, and pain were measured. Hierarchical cluster analysis (Ward method) and analysis of variance were performed. In the second year after surgery, patients were recontacted by telephone to follow-up. RTS and reinjury were compared by profile type. Results: A total of 162 athletes were initially included, of whom 123 responded regarding RTS and reinjury. Cluster analysis showed a 4-cluster solution (χ2[21] = 428.59; λ =.064; P <.001). Profile 1 (27.8%) was characterized by moderate reinjury anxiety and no depression. Profile 2 (22.8%) was characterized by moderate reinjury anxiety and minor anxious-depressive reaction. Profile 3 (30.9%) was characterized by no reinjury anxiety, no depression, and high confidence. Profile 4 (18.5%) was characterized by high anxiety, high depression, and low confidence. Profile 4 had the lowest self-esteem and optimism scores compared with profile 3 (P <.001). In addition, a higher percentage of men was found in profile 3 as opposed to profile 4 (χ2[3] = 11.35; P <.01). Profile 4 had the highest rate of non-RTS with 54.2% (profile 1: 14.3%, P =.001; profile 2: 25.0%, P =.031; profile 3: 22.2%, P =.011). Finally, patients with profile 3 had a higher risk of reinjury (13.9%) than those with profile 4 (0%) (P =.047), who had an extremely conservative RTS. Conclusion: The different profiles will affect RTS, but also the risk of reinjury exclusively for profiles 3 and 4. Background: It has been shown that chronic ankle instability (CAI) leads to abnormalities in neuromuscular control of more proximal joints than the ankle. Although strength of the hip and the ankle muscles has been largely investigated providing concordant results, limited evidence with contrasting results has been reported regarding knee extensor and flexor muscles. Purpose: To investigate maximal and submaximal isometric muscle strength in individuals with CAI. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Fifteen participants with unilateral CAI and 15 healthy matched controls were recruited. To quantify maximal strength, peak forces were recorded during a maximal isometric voluntary contraction of knee extensor and flexor muscles at 30° and 90° of knee flexion and normalized by the body weight of each participant. At both angles, submaximal isometric contractions at 20%, 50%, and 80% of the maximal voluntary isometric contraction were performed to analyze strength steadiness, in terms of coefficient of variation, and strength accuracy, in terms of absolute error. During all the assessments, knee extensor and flexor muscle activation was recorded by means of surface electromyography. Results: Knee flexor maximal isometric strength was significantly lower in the injured limb of individuals with CAI in comparison with healthy controls at both 30° (0.15 ± 0.05 vs 0.20 ± 0.05; P <.05) and 90° (0.14 ± 0.04 vs 0.18 ± 0.05; P <.05). Knee extensor and flexor steadiness was significantly lower (higher coefficient of variation) in both the injured and the noninjured limbs of individuals with CAI in comparison with healthy individuals at 90° and at 30° for knee flexor steadiness of the injured limb. Knee extensor and flexor accuracy was lower (higher absolute error) in both the injured and noninjured limbs of individuals with CAI in comparison with healthy individuals, mainly at 30°, while at 90° it was lower only in the injured limb. No differences between the 2 groups were found for maximal isometric strength of knee extensor muscles, as well as for muscle activations. Conclusion: Individuals with CAI show abnormalities in maximal and submaximal isometric strength of knee flexor muscles, and submaximal strength of the knee extensor muscles. Further studies should deeply investigate mechanisms leading to these abnormalities. Background: Time-dependent postoperative changes in knee joint line obliquity (KJLO) and subsequent adaptational changes in the hip and ankle joints have not been fully proven after medial open wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO). Purpose: To investigate the serial postoperative changes in KJLO and subsequent adaptational changes in the hip and ankle joints over time after MOWHTO. Study design: Case series, Level of evidence, 4. Methods: A total of 92 patients who underwent MOWHTO between April 2015 and December 2020 were evaluated. Radiographic parameters, including KJLO, ankle joint line obliquity (ALO), hip abduction angle (HAA), joint line convergence angle, weightbearing line ratio, and hip-knee-ankle angle, were analyzed in time sequence (preoperatively and 3, 6, 12, and 24 months postoperatively). Repeated-measures analysis of variance and post hoc analysis were used to demonstrate alterations and the statistical significance of KJLO and other related radiographic parameters over time. Results: The mean KJLO values were –1.9°, –2.1°, –2.7°, and –3.2° at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months postoperatively, respectively, indicating that there was consistent increase in valgus tilting of KJLO from 6 to 24 months (P <.001 for both 6-12 months and 12-24 months). ALO and HAA showed significant changes from 6 to 12 months (ALO, P <.001; HAA, P =.002), but not between 12 and 24 months (ALO: –3.0°, –2.7°, –1.9°, and −1.6°; HAA: –0.8°, –0.9°, –1.5°, and −1.8° at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months, respectively). The mean joint line convergence angle, weightbearing line ratio, and hip-knee-ankle angle did not change significantly from 3 months to 24 months postoperatively. Conclusion: There was a consistent increase in valgus tilting of the postoperative KJLO from 6 to 24 months after MOWHTO. The adaptive ALO and HAA significantly changed between 6 and 12 months and were maintained until 24 months after MOWHTO. Development of painful oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy (OIPN) is a major problem in people who receive oxaliplatin as part of cancer treatment. The pain experienced by those with OIPN can be seriously debilitating and lead to discontinuation of an otherwise successful treatment. Duloxetine is currently the only recommended treatment for established painful OIPN recommended by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, but its preventative ability is still not clear. This study examined the ability of duloxetine to prevent signs of chronic OIPN in female (n = 12) and male (n = 21) rats treated with the chemotherapeutic agent oxaliplatin. Using an established model of OIPN, rats were started on duloxetine (15 mg) one week prior to oxaliplatin administration and continued duloxetine for 32 days. Behavioral testing for mechanical allodynia and mechanical hyperalgesia was done with selected von Frey filaments. Significant posttreatment differences were found for allodynia in female (p =.004), but not male rats. Duloxetine was associated with significant differences for hyperalgesia in both female (p <.001) and male (p <.001) rats. These findings provide preliminary evidence of the preventative effects of duloxetine on both oxaliplatin-induced allodynia and hyperalgesia in male and female rats, with a difference noted in response between the sexes. Background: Anterolateral knee laxity (ALLx) has been linked to tears of the lateral meniscus (LM) and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Purpose: To investigate the longitudinal relationship between the signal intensity (SI) of the repaired LM on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and residual ALLx after ACL reconstruction (ACLR). Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: Included were 87 patients who underwent double-bundle ACLR and lateral meniscal repair (mean age, 23.5 years; body mass index, 23.7 kg/m2; 56 women) at a single institution between 2010 and 2019. Proton density-weighted (PDW) and T2-weighted (T2W) MRI was performed at 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively, and the SI ratio (SIR) was calculated as (SI of the repaired LM)/(SI of the posterior cruciate ligament). At the 12-month follow-up, ALLx was evaluated using the pivot-shift test; an International Knee Documentation Committee grade ≥1 indicated residual ALLx. Results: Overall, 12 patients (13.8%) exhibited ALLx at 12 months postoperatively. At 3 months postoperatively, the SIR on PDW images (SIR-PDW) was significantly higher in patients with ALLx versus those without ALLx (1.98 ± 0.77 vs 1.49 ± 0.52, respectively; P = .007); there was no difference in the SIR on T2W images between the groups. SIR-PDW at 3 months postoperatively was correlated negatively with patient age (r = -0.308, P = .004). When patients were stratified into a younger (≤22 years; n = 53; ALLx = 7 [13.2%]) and an older (>22 years; n = 34; ALLx = 5 [14.7%]) group, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) for SIR-PDW in the younger group were statistically significant for predicting the prevalence of ALLx at all follow-up times (AUCs, 0.733-0.788) with optimal cutoff values of 2.00 at 3 months, 1.50 at 6 months, and 1.50 at 12 months. Logistic regression analysis revealed that if younger patients consistently had higher SIR-PDW values than the cutoff values, they were more likely to have residual ALLx (odds ratios, 10.24-23.57). Conclusion: For younger patients who underwent both ACLR and lateral meniscal repair, higher MRI SI of the repaired LM was associated with a higher prevalence of residual ALLx. Background: There are multiple recommended protocols for Vitamin D (VitD) supplementation in elderly; however, only a few studies achieved to examine the role of VitD supplements before intertrochanteric fracture surgery on mortality and complications after surgery. Methods: This single-center block-randomized double-blinded trial was conducted on 80 patients with intertrochanteric fractures and a sufficient level of 25 (OH) VitD. The intervention group received an intramuscular 300,000 IU VitD ampule before surgery. The primary outcome was a 6-month mortality rate, and the secondary outcomes were 1- and 2-year mortality rates and Harris Hip Score (HHS) in 6, 12, and 24 months after surgery. Chi-square, t-test, repeated measure ANOVA, and Cox regression survival model was used for statistical analysis. Results: 40 patients were allocated to each group. Demographic, clinical characteristics, and preoperative evaluations were not significantly different between the groups. Mortality rate 6-month after the surgery was 7.5% and 10% for the intervention and placebo groups respectively (P value =.71), 15% and 12.5% at 1-year (P value =.83), and 25% and 27.5% at 2-year (P value =.98). Based on the Cox regression model, only age was significantly associated with mortality (HR = 1.229, P value <.001). Significant HHS changes from baseline through 24 months after surgery were observed within both groups; however, mean differences were not significantly different between groups. Conclusions: A single preoperative 300,000 IU VitD did not significantly impact 2-year survival and HHS in patients with intertrochanteric fractures and sufficient serum VitD level. Introduction: Disease uncertainty refers to the inability to assign meaning to events related to the illness. Uncertainty of the disease can affect various aspects of human life such as psychological aspects. Objectives: This study aims to examine the relationship between disease uncertainty and perceived stress in COVID-19 patients. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on 212 hospitalized COVID-19 patients who were initially admitted to the intensive care units (ICUs) and later transferred to general wards within the same hospitals. Three instruments were utilized to collect data for this study. The Demographic Information Questionnaire, Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale (MUIS) for disease uncertainty, and Perceived Stress Questionnaire. For data analysis, both descriptive and inferential statistics were employed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 25. Results: The Pearson correlation coefficient matrix results showed a positive and significant relationship between uncertainty about the illness (P <.001, r = 0.829), ambiguity (P <.001, r = 0.795), complexity (P <.001, r = 0.835), inconsistency or instability (P <.001, r = 0.787), and unpredictability (P <.001, r = 0.776) with perceived stress in COVID-19 patients transferred from the intensive care units. Conclusion: Based on the findings of the current study, both uncertainty and perceived stress are elevated among COVID-19 patients, and a significant and direct relationship exists between these two variables.
