High-resolution and high-squint spaceborne spotlight synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has significant potential for extensive application in remote sensing, but its swath width effectiveness is constrained by a critical factor: severe range cell migration (RCM). To address this, pulse repetition interval (PRI) variation offers a practical scheme for raw data reception. However, the current designs for continuously varying PRI (CV-PRI) exhibit high complexity in engineering. In response to the issue, this paper proposes a novel strategy of stepwise varying PRI (SV-PRI), which demonstrates higher reconstruction accuracy compared with CV-PRI. Furthermore, confronting the azimuth non-uniform sampling characteristics induced by the PRI variation, this paper introduces a complete uniform reconstruction processing based on the azimuth partitioning methodology, which effectively alleviates the inherent contradiction between resolution and swath width. The processing flow, utilizing the temporal point remapping (TPR) concept, ensures the uniformity and coherence of dataset partitioning and reassembly in the context of the interpolation on non-uniform grids. Near-range radar imaging (NRRI) has evolved into a vital technology with diverse applications spanning fields such as remote sensing, surveillance, medical imaging and non-destructive testing. The Pseudopolar Format Matrix (PFM) has emerged as a promising technique for representing radar data in a compact and efficient manner. In this paper, we present a comprehensive PFM description of near-range radar imaging. Furthermore, this paper also explores the integration of the Fractional Fourier Transform (FrFT) with PFM for enhanced radar signal analysis. The FrFT—a powerful mathematical tool for signal processing—offers unique capabilities in analysing signals with time-frequency localization properties. By combining FrFT with PFM, we have achieved significant advancements in radar imaging, particularly in dealing with complex clutter environments and improving target detection accuracy. Meanwhile, this paper highlights the imaging matrix form of FrFT under the PFM, emphasizing the potential for addressing challenges encountered in near-range radar imaging. Finally, numerical simulation and real-world scenario measurement imaging results verify optimized accuracy and computational efficiency with the fusion of PFM and FrFT techniques, paving the way for further innovations in near-range radar imaging applications. Forest biomass estimation is undoubtedly one of the most pressing research subjects at present. Combining multi-source remote sensing information can give full play to the advantages of different remote sensing technologies, providing more comprehensive and rich information for aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation research. Based on Landsat 8, Sentinel-2A, and ALOS2 PALSAR data, this paper takes the artificial coniferous forests in the Saihanba Forest of Hebei Province as the object of study, fully explores and establishes remote sensing factors and information related to forest structure, gives full play to the advantages of spectral signals in detecting the horizontal structure and multi-dimensional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data in detecting the vertical structure, and combines environmental factors to carry out multivariate synergistic methods of estimating the AGB. This paper uses three variable selection methods (Pearson correlation coefficient, random forest significance, and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO)) to establish the variable sets, combining them with three typical non-parametric models to estimate AGB, namely, random forest (RF), support vector regression (SVR), and artificial neural network (ANN), to analyze the effect of forest structure on biomass estimation, explore the suitable AGB of artificial coniferous forests estimation of machine learning models, and develop the method of quantifying saturation value of the combined variables. The results show that the horizontal structure is more capable of explaining the AGB compared to the vertical structure information, and that combining the multi-structure information can improve the model results and the saturation value to a great extent. In this study, different sets of variables can produce relatively superior results in different models. The variable set selected using LASSO gives the best results in the SVR model, with an R 2 values of 0.9998 and 0.8792 for the training and the test set, respectively, and the highest saturation value obtained is 185.73 t/ha, which is beyond the range of the measured data. The problem of saturation in biomass estimation in boreal medium- and high-density forests was overcome to a certain extent, and the AGB of the Saihanba area was better estimated. As artificial intelligence technology advances, the application of object detection technology in the field of SAR (synthetic aperture radar) imagery is becoming increasingly widespread. However, it also faces challenges such as resource limitations in spaceborne environments and significant uncertainty in the intensity of interference in application scenarios. These factors make the performance evaluation of object detection key to ensuring the smooth execution of tasks. In the face of such complex and harsh application scenarios, methods that rely on single-dimensional evaluation to assess models have had their limitations highlighted. Therefore, this paper proposes a multi-dimensional evaluation method for deep learning models used in SAR image object detection. This method evaluates models in a multi-dimensional manner, covering the training, testing, and application stages of the model, and constructs a multi-dimensional evaluation index system. The training stage includes assessing training efficiency and the impact of training samples; the testing stage includes model performance evaluation, application-based evaluation, and task-based evaluation; and the application stage includes model operation evaluation and model deployment evaluation. The evaluations of these three stages constitute the key links in the performance evaluation of deep learning models. Furthermore, this paper proposes a multi-indicator comprehensive evaluation method based on entropy weight correlation scaling, which calculates the weights of each evaluation indicator through test data, thereby providing a balanced and comprehensive evaluation mechanism for model performance. In the experiments, we designed specific interferences for SAR images in the testing stage and tested three models from the YOLO series. Finally, we constructed a multi-dimensional performance profile diagram for deep learning object detection models, providing a new visualization method to comprehensively characterize model performance in complex application scenarios. This can provide more accurate and comprehensive model performance evaluation for remote sensing data processing, thereby guiding model selection and optimization. This paper presents a forward modeling method for the scattering center (SC) model of dynamic ships on time-varying sea surfaces, tailored for remote sensing and target-recognition applications. Grounded in ship hydrodynamics, the methodology delineates ship movements amidst fluctuating waves, harnessing computer graphics to integrate ship–sea geometries across diverse temporal instances. Utilizing the four-path model, the composite scattering effects are segregated into distinct ship and sea contributions, along with their mutual interactions. Augmented by high-frequency electromagnetic principles, the paper quantifies and deduces SC parameters, culminating in a 3-D parameterized SC model for complex maritime targets. Unlike conventional inverse methods, this approach employs a "cause-to-effect" forward strategy, establishing clear links between SCs and local geometries, enhancing the model's physical clarity. Using the fishing ship as a case, this research compared the normalized similarity index and position-matching rate between the reconstructed synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image and the simulated SAR image. The results indicate that all computed results exceeded 90%. Furthermore, a comparison was conducted between the reconstructed radar cross-sections (RCS) obtained by expanding the model within a large angular range and the simulated results. The root mean square error between the two was less than 3 dB, affirming the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed model. Additionally, the research examines the variations in SCs during the six-degrees-of-freedom motions, providing a detailed quantitative analysis of their temporal trends in amplitude and position. In large-scale remote sensing scenarios characterized by intricate terrain, the straightforward road imaging features in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images make them susceptible to interference from other elements such as ridges, compromising the robustness of conventional SAR image road extraction methods. This paper introduces a method that integrates Gaofen-3 (GF-3) with a resolution of 3.0 m, Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), and Gaofen-2 (GF-2) remote sensing image data with a resolution of 4.0 m, aiming to improve the performance of road extraction in complex terrain. Leveraging DEMs, this study addresses the limitations in feature-based SAR algorithms, extending their application to complex remote sensing scenarios. Decision-level fusion, integrating SAR and multispectral images, further refines road extraction precision. To overcome issues related to terrain interference, including fragmented road segments, an adaptive rotated median filter and graph-theory-based optimization are introduced. These advancements collectively enhance road recognition accuracy and topological precision. The experimental results validate the effectiveness of the multi-source remote sensing image fusion and optimization methods. Crop identification at the field level using remote sensing data is a very important task. However, the use of multispectral data for the construction of vegetation indices is sometimes impossible or limited. For such situations, solutions based on the use of time series of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) indices are promising, eliminating the problems associated with cloudiness and providing an assessment of crop development characteristics during the growing season. We evaluated the use of time series of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) indices to characterize crop development during the growing season. The use of SAR imagery for crop identification addresses issues related to cloudiness. Therefore, it is important to choose the SAR index that is the most stable and has the lowest spatial variability throughout the growing season while being comparable to the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The presented work is devoted to the study of these issues. In this study, the spatial variabilities of different SAR indices time series were compared for a single region for the first time to identify the most stable index for use in precision agriculture, including the in-field heterogeneity of crop sites, crop rotation control, mapping, and other tasks in various agricultural areas. Seventeen Sentinel-1B images of the southern part of the Khabarovsk Territory in the Russian Far East at a spatial resolution of 20 m and temporal resolution of 12 days for the period between 14 April 2021 and 1 November 2021 were obtained and processed to generate vertical–horizontal/vertical–vertical polarization (VH/VV), radar vegetation index (RVI), and dual polarimetric radar vegetation index (DpRVI) time series. NDVI time series were constructed from multispectral Sentinel-2 images using a cloud cover mask. The characteristics of time series maximums were calculated for different types of crops: soybean, oat, buckwheat, and timothy grass. The DpRVI index exhibited the highest stability, with coefficients of variation of the time series that were significantly lower than those for RVI and VH/VV. The main characteristics of the SAR and NDVI time series—the maximum values, the dates of the maximum values, and the variability of these indices—were compared. The variabilities of the maximum values and dates of maximum values for DpRVI were lower than for RVI and VH/VV, whereas the variabilities of the maximum values and the dates of maximum values were comparable for DpRVI and NDVI. On the basis of the DpRVI index, classifications were carried out using seven machine learning methods (fine tree, quadratic discriminant, Gaussian naïve Bayes, fine k nearest neighbors or KNN, random under-sampling boosting or RUSBoost, random forest, and support vector machine) for experimental sites covering a total area of 1009.8 ha. The quadratic discriminant method yielded the best results, with a pixel classification accuracy of approximately 82% and a kappa value of 0.67. Overall, 90% of soybean, 74.1% of oat, 68.9% of buckwheat, and 57.6% of timothy grass pixels were correctly classified. At the field level, 94% of the fields included in the test dataset were correctly classified. The paper results show that the DpRVI can be used in cases where the NDVI is limited, allowing for the monitoring of phenological development and crop mapping. Ship detection is a significant issue in remote sensing based on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). This paper combines the advantages of a steady constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector and a knowledge-oriented Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT) classifier to achieve the location and the classification of ship candidates. The steady CFAR detector smooths the image by a moving-average filter and models the probability distribution of the smoothed clutter as a Gaussian distribution. The mean and the standard deviation of the Gaussian distribution are estimated according to the left half of the histogram to remove the effect of land, ships, and other targets. From the Gaussian distribution and a preset constant false alarm rate, a threshold is obtained to segment land, ships, and other targets from the clutter. Then, a series of morphological operations are introduced to eliminate land and extract ships and other targets, and an active contour algorithm is utilized to refine ships and other targets. Finally, ships are recognized from other targets by a knowledge-oriented GBDT classifier. Based on the brain-like ship-recognition process, we change the way of the decision-tree generation and achieve a higher classification performance than the original GBDT. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image registration is an important process in many applications, such as image stitching and remote sensing surveillance. The registration accuracy is commonly affected by the presence of speckle noise in SAR images. When speckle noise is intense, the number of image features acquired by single-feature-based methods is insufficient. An SAR image registration method that combines nonlinear diffusion filtering, Hessian features and edge points is proposed in this paper to reduce speckle noise and obtain more image features. The proposed method uses the infinite symmetric exponential filter (ISEF) for image pre-processing and nonlinear diffusion filtering for scale-space construction. These measures can remove speckle noise from SAR images while preserving image edges. Hessian features and edge points are also employed as image features to optimize the utilization of feature information. Experiments with different noise levels, geometric transformations and image scenes demonstrate that the proposed method effectively improves the accuracy of SAR image registration compared with the SIFT-OCT, SAR-SIFT, Harris-SIFT, NF-Hessian and KAZE-SAR algorithms. Three-dimensional SAR imaging of urban buildings is currently a hotspot in the research area of remote sensing. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) offers all-time, all-weather, high-resolution capacity, and is an important tool for the monitoring of building health. Buildings have geometric distortion in conventional 2D SAR images, which brings great difficulties to the interpretation of SAR images. This paper proposes a novel Rotating SAR (RSAR) mode, which acquires 3D information of buildings from two different angles in a single rotation. This new RSAR mode takes the center of a straight track as its rotation center, and obtains images of the same facade of a building from two different angles. By utilizing the differences in geometric distortion of buildings in the image pair, the 3D structure of the building is reconstructed. Compared to the existing tomographic SAR or circular SAR, this method does not require multiple flights in different elevations or observations from varying aspect angles, and greatly simplifies data acquisition. Accurate snow depth estimation is of significant importance, particularly for preventing avalanche disasters and predicting flood seasons. The predominant approaches for such snow depth estimation, based on deep learning methods, typically rely on passive microwave remote sensing data. However, due to the low resolution of passive microwave remote sensing data, it often results in low-accuracy outcomes, posing considerable limitations in application. To further improve the accuracy of snow depth estimation, in this paper, we used active microwave remote sensing data. We fused multi-spectral optical satellite images, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images and land cover distribution images to generate a snow remote sensing dataset (SRSD). It is a first-of-its-kind dataset that includes active microwave remote sensing images in high-latitude regions of Asia. Using these novel data, we proposed a multi-scale feature perception and aggregation neural network (MFPANet) that focuses on improving feature extraction from multi-source images. Our systematic analysis reveals that the proposed approach is not only robust but also achieves high accuracy in snow depth estimation compared to existing state-of-the-art methods, with RMSE of 0.360 and with MAE of 0.128. The efficient and timely identification of oil spill areas is crucial for ocean environmental protection. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is widely used in oil spill detection due to its all-weather monitoring capability. Meanwhile, existing deep learning-based oil spill detection methods mainly rely on the classical U-Net framework and have achieved impressive results. However, SAR images exhibit high noise, blurry boundaries, and irregular shapes of target areas, as well as speckles and shadows, which lead to the loss of performance in existing algorithms. In this paper, we propose a novel network architecture to achieve more precise segmentation of oil spill areas by reintroducing rich semantic contextual information before obtaining the final segmentation mask. Specifically, the proposed architecture can re-fuse feature maps from different levels at the decoder end. We design a multi-convolutional layer (MCL) module to extract basic feature information from SAR images, and a feature extraction module (FEM) module further extracts and fuses feature maps generated by the U-Net decoder at different levels. Through these operations, the network can learn rich global and local contextual information, enable sufficient interaction of feature information at different stages, enhance the model's contextual awareness, and improve its ability to recognize complex textures and blurry boundaries, thereby enhancing the segmentation accuracy of SAR images. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry (InSAR) is a well-established remote sensing technique capable of providing accurate topographic information of an area. Multiple scattering occurring at different heights within a single resolution cell, however, cannot be resolved using a single baseline and results in a degradation of the height accuracy. Techniques such as polarimetric InSAR and SAR tomography tackle this problem using additional measurements to obtain the three-dimensional structure of the volume. However, polarimetry-based methods assume orthogonal and deterministic scattering mechanisms and tomography requires numerous observations. This paper presents a novel approach to retrieving the three-dimensional structure of semitransparent media using wide fractional bandwidth InSAR. The frequency dependency of the InSAR coherence is exploited to retrieve the three-dimensional structure, assuming that signals with wide fractional bandwidth are available, as is the case for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones. As the extinction is, in general, frequency-dependent, a third observation may improve the inversion results. Simulations of different scenarios show that the frequency profile can be inverted to obtain information about the three-dimensional scattering structure. The acquired data also enable retrieval of the phase center depth as a function of frequency. The accurate estimation of forest aboveground biomass is of great significance for forest management and carbon balance monitoring. Remote sensing instruments have been widely applied in forest parameters inversion with wide coverage and high spatiotemporal resolution. In this paper, the capability of different remote-sensed imagery was investigated, including multispectral images (GaoFen-6, Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8) and various SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) data (GaoFen-3, Sentinel-1, ALOS-2), in aboveground forest biomass estimation. In particular, based on the forest inventory data of Hangzhou in China, the Random Forest (RF), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Convolutional Neural Networks Long Short-Term Memory Networks (CNN-LSTM) algorithms were deployed to construct the forest biomass estimation models, respectively. The estimate accuracies were evaluated under the different configurations of images and methods. The results show that for the SAR data, ALOS-2 has a higher biomass estimation accuracy than the GaoFen-3 and Sentinel-1. Moreover, the GaoFen-6 data is slightly worse than Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 optical data in biomass estimation. In contrast with the single source, integrating multisource data can effectively enhance accuracy, with improvements ranging from 5% to 10%. The CNN-LSTM generally performs better than CNN and RF, regardless of the data used. The combination of CNN-LSTM and multisource data provided the best results in this case and can achieve the maximum R2 value of up to 0.74. It was found that the majority of the biomass values in the study area in 2018 ranged from 60 to 90 Mg/ha, with an average value of 64.20 Mg/ha. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are widely utilized in the field of remote sensing. However, there is a limited body of literature specifically addressing the compression of SAR learning images. To address the escalating volume of SAR image data for storage and transmission, which necessitates more effective compression algorithms, this paper proposes a novel framework for compressing SAR images. Experimental validation is performed using a representative low-resolution Sentinel-1 dataset and the high-resolution QiLu-1 dataset. Initially, we introduce a novel two-stage transformation-based approach aimed at suppressing the low-frequency components of the input data, thereby achieving a high information entropy and minimizing quantization losses. Subsequently, a quality map guidance image compression algorithm is introduced, involving the fusion of the input SAR images with a target-aware map. This fusion involves convolutional transformations to generate a compact latent representation, effectively exploring redundancies between focused and non-focused areas. To assess the algorithm's performance, experiments are carried out on both the low-resolution Sentinel-1 dataset and the high-resolution QiLu-1 dataset. The results indicate that the low-frequency suppression algorithm significantly outperforms traditional processing algorithms by 3–8 dB when quantifying the input data, effectively preserving image features and improving image performance metrics. This paper presents a methodology to detect the coastal erosion and progradation effects in the 'Atrato River' delta, located in the Gulf of Urabá in Colombia, using SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images. Erosion is the physical–mechanical loss of the soil that affects its functions and ecosystem services while producing a reduction in its productive capacity. Progradation is the deposition of layers in the basinward direction while moving coastward. Other studies have investigated these two phenomena using optical images, encountering difficulties due to the persistent presence of clouds in this region. In order to avoid the cloud effects, in this study, we used 16 Sentinel 1 SAR images with two different polarizations between 2016 and 2023. First, each image was rescaled from 0 to 255, then the image was despeckled by a deep learning (DL) model. Afterwards, a single RGB image was composed with the filtered polarizations. Next, a classifier with 99% accuracy based on Otsu's method was used to determine whether each pixel was water or not. Then, the classified image was registered to a reference one using Oriented FAST and Rotated BRIEF (ORB) descriptor. Finally, a multitemporal analysis was performed by comparing every image to the previous one to identify the studied phenomena, calculating areas. Also, all images were integrated to obtain a heatmap that showed the overall changes across eight years (2016–2023) in a single image. The multitemporal analysis performed found that the newly created mouth is the most active area for these processes, coinciding with other studies. In addition, a comparison of these findings with the Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) showed a relative delayed coupling to the erosion process and a coupling of progradation with dry and wet seasons. Landslide geological disasters, occurring globally, often result in significant loss of life and extensive economic damage. In recent years, the severity of these disasters has increased, likely due to the frequent occurrence of extreme rainstorms associated with global warming. This escalating trend emphasizes the urgent need for a simple and efficient method to identify hidden dangers related to landslide geological disasters. Areas experiencing seasonal heavy rainfall are particularly susceptible to such disasters, posing a serious threat to the lives and property of local residents. In response to the challenging characteristics of landslide geological hazards, such as their strong concealment and the high vegetation coverage in the Liupan Mountain area of the Loess Plateau, this study focuses on the integrated remote sensing identification and research of hidden landslide dangers in Longde County. The methodology combines differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar technology (D-InSAR) and high-resolution optical remote sensing. Surface deformation information of Longde County was obtained by analyzing 85 Sentinel-1A data from 2019 to mid-2020 using Stacking-InSAR, in conjunction with high-resolution optical remote sensing image data from GF-2 in 2019. Furthermore, the study conducted integrated remote sensing identification and field verification of landslide hazards throughout the entire county. This involved interpreting the shape and deformation marks of landslide hazards, identifying the disaster-bearing bodies, and expertly interpreting the environmental factors contributing to the hazards. As a result, 47 suspected landslide hazards and 21 field investigation points were identified, with 16 hazards verified with an accuracy of 76.19%. This outcome directly confirms the applicability and accuracy of the integrated remote sensing identification technology in the study area. The research results presented in this paper provide an effective scientific and theoretical basis for the monitoring and treatment of landslide geological disasters in the future stages. Given the large volume of remote sensing images collected daily, automatic object detection and segmentation have been a consistent need in Earth observation (EO). However, objects of interest vary in shape, size, appearance, and reflecting properties. This is not only reflected by the fact that these objects exhibit differences due to their geographical diversity but also by the fact that these objects appear differently in images collected from different sensors (optical and radar) and platforms (satellite, aerial, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)). Although there exists a plethora of object detection methods in the area of remote sensing, given the very fast development of prevalent deep learning methods, there is still a lack of recent updates for object detection methods. In this paper, we aim to provide an update that informs researchers about the recent development of object detection methods and their close sibling in the deep learning era, instance segmentation. The integration of these methods will cover approaches to data at different scales and modalities, such as optical, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, and digital surface models (DSM). Specific emphasis will be placed on approaches addressing data and label limitations in this deep learning era. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) raw data do not have a direct application; therefore, SAR raw signal processing algorithms are used to generate images that are used for various required applications. Currently, there are several algorithms focusing SAR raw data such as the range-Doppler algorithm, Chirp Scaling algorithm, and Omega-k algorithm, with these algorithms being the most used and traditional in SAR raw signal processing. The most prominent algorithm that operates in the frequency domain for focusing SAR raw data obtained by a synthetic aperture radar with large synthetic apertures is the Omega-k algorithm, which operates in the two-dimensional frequency domain; therefore, in this paper, we used the Omega-k algorithm to produce SAR images and modify the Omega-k algorithm by adding the Doppler factor to improve the accuracy of SAR raw data processing obtained by the continuous wave and pulsed frequency modulated linear frequency modulated radar system from the surfaces of interest. On the other hand, for the case of unmanned aerial vehicle-borne linear frequency modulated continuous wave (LFM-CW) SAR systems, we added motion compensation to the modified Omega-k algorithm. Finally, the testing and validation of the developed Omega-k algorithm used simulated and real SAR raw data for both pulsed synthetic aperture and continuous wave radars. The real SAR raw data used for the validation of the modified Omega-k algorithm were the raw data obtained by the micro advanced synthetic aperture radar (MicroASAR) system, which is an LFM-CW synthetic aperture radar installed on board an unmanned aerial system and the raw data obtained by European remote sensing (ERS-2) satellite with a synthetic aperture radar installed. The characterization of landslides located in remote areas poses significant challenges due to the costs of reaching the sites and the lack of reliable subsurface data to constrain geological interpretations. In this paper, the advantages of combining field and remote sensing techniques to investigate the deformation and stability of rock slopes are demonstrated. The characterization of the Fels landslide, a large, slowly deforming rock slope in central Alaska, is described. Historical aerial imagery is used to highlight the relationship between glacier retreat and developing instability. Airborne laser scanning (ALS) and Structure-from-Motion (SfM) datasets are used to investigate the structural geological setting of the landslide, revealing a good agreement between structural discontinuities at the outcrop and slope scales. The magnitude, plunge, and direction of slope surface displacements and their changes over time are studied using a multi-temporal synthetic aperture radar speckle-tracking (SAR ST) dataset. The analyses show an increase in displacement rates (i.e., an acceleration of the movement) between 2010 and 2020. Significant spatial variations of displacement direction and plunge are noted and correlated with the morphology of the failure surface reconstructed using the vector inclination method (VIM). In particular, steeper displacement vectors were reconstructed in the upper slope, compared to the central part, thus suggesting a change in basal surface morphology, which is largely controlled by rock mass foliation. Through this analytical approach, the Fels landslide is shown to be a slow-moving, compound rockslide, the displacement of which is controlled by structural geological features and promoted by glacier retreat. Extracting water bodies from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images plays a crucial role in the management of water resources, flood monitoring, and other applications. Recently, transformer-based models have been extensively utilized in the remote sensing domain. However, due to regular patch-partition and weak inductive bias, transformer-based models face challenges such as edge serration and high data dependency when used for water body extraction from SAR images. To address these challenges, we introduce a new model, the Superpixel-based Transformer (SPT), based on the adaptive characteristic of superpixels and knowledge constraints of the adjacency matrix. (1) To mitigate edge serration, the SPT replaces regular patch partition with superpixel segmentation to fully utilize the internal homogeneity of superpixels. (2) To reduce data dependency, the SPT incorporates a normalized adjacency matrix between superpixels into the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) to impose knowledge constraints. (3) Additionally, to integrate superpixel-level learning from the SPT with pixel-level learning from the CNN, we combine these two deep networks to form SPT-UNet for water body extraction. Mining activities in coal mining areas have exacerbated ecological and geological environmental risks. To explore the impact of mineral resources on the ecological and geological environment risk (EGER) in coal mining areas, we developed a novel ecological and geological risk assessment framework. This framework first quantifies the impact of mining activities on the surface of coal mining areas using remote sensing interpretation and Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) technology. Then, this framework selected six indicators, including subsidence, surface occupation and damage, FVC, RSEI, precipitation, and temperatures. The weights of the evaluation indicators were calculated using a coupled weighting model combining the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Entropy Method (EM). This approach was applied to the Wangwa mining area to assess its ecological and geological risks. The results show that the surface subsidence increase year by year. The EGER in the study area was medium and the change rate of the EGER index in Wangwa mining area from 2017 to 2022 was −0.460 to 0.598. The EGER index increased southwest of the study area but reduced in the pre-investigation area and north of the investigation area. Recently, the low-rank representation (LRR) model has been widely used in the field of remote sensing image denoising due to its excellent noise suppression capability. However, those low-rank-based methods always discard important edge details as residuals, leading to a common issue of blurred edges in denoised results. To address this problem, we take a new look at low-rank residuals and try to extract edge information from them. Therefore, a hierarchical denoising framework was combined with a low-rank model to extract edge information from low-rank residuals within the edge subspace. A prior knowledge matrix was designed to enable the model to learn necessary structural information rather than noise. Also, such traditional model-driven approaches require multiple iterations, and the solutions may be very complex and computationally intensive. To further enhance the noise suppression performance and computing efficiency, a hierarchical low-rank denoising model based on deep unrolling (HLR-DUR) was proposed, integrating deep neural networks into the hierarchical low-rank denoising framework to expand the information capture and representation capabilities of the proposed shallow model. This study proposes a novel approach to estimate canopy density in Picea Schrenkiana var. Tianschanica forest sub-compartments by integrating optical and radar satellite data. This effort is aimed at enhancing methodologies for forest resource surveys and monitoring, particularly vital for the sustainable development of semi-arid mountainous areas with fragile ecological environments. The study area is the West Tianshan Mountain Nature Reserve in Xinjiang, which is characterized by its unique dominant tree species, Picea Schrenkiana. A total of 411 characteristic factors were extracted from Gaofen-2 (GF-2) sub-meter optical satellite imagery, Gaofen-3 (GF-3) multi-polarization synthetic aperture radar satellite imagery, and digital elevation model (DEM) data. Consequently, 17 characteristic parameters were selected based on their correlation with canopy density data to construct an estimation model. Three distinct models were developed, including a multiple stepwise regression model (a linear approach), a Back Propagation (BP) neural network model (a neural network-based method), and a Cubist model (a decision tree-based technique). The results indicate that combining optical and radar image characteristics significantly enhances accuracy, with an Average Absolute Percentage Precision (AAPP) value improvement in estimation accuracy from 76.50% (with optical image) and 78.50% (with radar image) to 78.66% (with both). Of the three models, the BP neural network model achieved the highest overall accuracy (79.19%). At the sub-component scale, the BP neural network model demonstrated superior accuracy in low canopy density estimation (75.37%), whereas the Cubist model, leveraging radar image characteristics, excelled in medium density estimations (87.46%). Notably, the integrated Cubist model combining optical and radar data achieved the highest accuracy for high canopy density estimation (89.17%). Instance segmentation of remote sensing images can not only provide object-level positioning information but also provide pixel-level positioning information. This pixel-level information annotation has a wide range of uses in the field of remote sensing, and it is of great value for environmental detection and resource management. Because optical images generally have complex terrain environments and changeable object shapes, SAR images are affected by complex scattering phenomena, and the mask quality obtained by the traditional instance segmentation method used in remote sensing images is not high. Therefore, it is a challenging task to improve the mask quality of instance segmentation in remote sensing images. Since the traditional two-stage instance segmentation method consists of backbone, neck, bbox head, and mask head, the final mask quality depends on the product of all front-end work quality. Therefore, we consider the difficulty of optical and SAR images to bring instance segmentation to the targeted improvement of the neck, bbox head, and mask head, and we propose the Context-Aggregated and SAM-Guided Network (CSNet). In this network, the plain feature fusion pyramid network (PFFPN) can generate a pyramid for the plain feature and provide a feature map of the appropriate instance scale for detection and segmentation. The network also includes a context aggregation bbox head (CABH), which uses the context information and instance information around the instance to solve the problem of missed detection and false detection in detection. The network also has a SAM-Guided mask head (SGMH), which learns by using SAM as a teacher, and uses the knowledge learned to improve the edge of the mask. Experimental results show that CSNet significantly improves the quality of masks generated under optical and SAR images, and CSNet achieves 5.1% and 3.2% AP increments compared with other SOTA models. Optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery offers a wealth of complementary information on a given target, attributable to the distinct imaging modalities of each component image type. Thus, multimodal remote sensing data have been widely used to improve land cover classification. However, fully integrating optical and SAR image data is not straightforward due to the distinct distributions of their features. To this end, we propose a land cover classification network based on multimodal feature fusion, i.e., MFFnet. We adopt a dual-stream network to extract features from SAR and optical images, where a ResNet network is utilized to extract deep features from optical images and PidiNet is employed to extract edge features from SAR. Simultaneously, the iAFF feature fusion module is used to facilitate data interactions between multimodal data for both low- and high-level features. Additionally, to enhance global feature dependency, the ASPP module is employed to handle the interactions between high-level features. The processed high-level features extracted from the dual-stream encoder are fused with low-level features and inputted into the decoder to restore the dimensional feature maps, generating predicted images. Comprehensive evaluations demonstrate that MFFnet achieves excellent performance in both qualitative and quantitative assessments on the WHU-OPT-SAR dataset. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a powerful tool in remote sensing applications that can produce high-resolution images and operate in any weather condition. It is composed of many RF components, such as the IQ mixer, which mixes the base chirp signal (IF) with the carrier signal (LO) and increases the bandwidth of the transmitted signal to twice the maximum frequency of the base chirp signal, reducing the workload of Programmable Field Gate Arrays (FPGA) and increasing the resolution of the SAR system. This research proposes a power combiner–splitter design that will be used as a supporting component to construct the IQ mixer in SAR applications based on a rat-race coupler. The measurement results show that the coupler has good S-parameter values.  S 11 ,  S 22 , and  S 33  have a low reflection value below −17 dB,  S 13  has a high isolation value below −22 dB, and  S 21  and  S 31  have a low attenuation value below −4 dB with amplitude unbalance below 0.1 dB and phase unbalance below 1 ° . Surface soil moisture (SSM) plays an important role in agricultural and environmental systems. With the continuous improvement in the availability of remote sensing data, satellite technology has experienced widespread development in the monitoring of large-scale SSM. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical remote sensing data have been extensively utilized due to their complementary advantages in this field. However, the limited information from single-band SARs or single optical remote sensing data has restricted the accuracy of SSM retrieval, posing challenges for precise SSM monitoring. In contrast, multi-source and multi-band remote sensing data contain richer and more comprehensive surface information. Therefore, a method of combining multi-band SAR data and employing machine learning models for SSM inversion was proposed. C-band Sentinel-1 SAR data, X-band TerraSAR data, and Sentinel-2 optical data were used in this study. Six commonly used feature parameters were extracted from these data. Three machine learning methods suitable for small-sample training, including Genetic Algorithms Back Propagation (GA-BP), support vector regression (SVR), and Random Forest (RF), were employed to construct the SSM inversion models. The differences in SSM retrieval accuracy were compared when two different bands of SAR data were combined with optical data separately and when three types of data were used together. The results show that the best inversion performance was achieved when all three types of remote sensing data were used simultaneously. Additionally, compared to the C-band SAR data, the X-band SAR data exhibited superior performance. Ultimately, the RF model achieved the best accuracy, with a determinable coefficient of 0.9186, a root mean square error of 0.0153 cm3/cm3, and a mean absolute error of 0.0122 cm3/cm3. The results indicate that utilizing multi-band remote sensing data for SSM inversion offers significant advantages, providing a new perspective for the precise monitoring of SSM. Monitoring ships on water surfaces encounters obstacles such as weather conditions, sunlight, and water ripples, posing significant challenges in accurately detecting target ships in real time. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) offers a viable solution for real-time ship detection, unaffected by cloud coverage, precipitation, or light levels. However, SAR images are often affected by speckle noise, salt-and-pepper noise, and water surface ripple interference. This study introduces LCAS-DetNet, a Multi-Location Cross-Attention Ship Detection Network tailored for the ships in SAR images. Modeled on the YOLO architecture, LCAS-DetNet comprises a feature extractor, an intermediate layer ("Neck"), and a detection head. The feature extractor includes the computation of Multi-Location Cross-Attention (MLCA) for precise extraction of ship features at multiple scales. Incorporating both local and global branches, MLCA bolsters the network's ability to discern spatial arrangements and identify targets via a cross-attention mechanism. Each branch utilizes Multi-Location Attention (MLA) and calculates pixel-level correlations in both channel and spatial dimensions, further combating the impact of salt-and-pepper noise on the distribution of objective ship pixels. The feature extractor integrates downsampling and MLCA stacking, enhanced with residual connections and Patch Embedding, to improve the network's multi-scale spatial recognition capabilities. As the network deepens, we consider this structure to be cascaded and multi-scale, providing the network with a richer receptive field. Additionally, we introduce a loss function based on Wise-IoUv3 to address the influence of label quality on the gradient updates. The utilization of optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) multi-source data to obtain better land classification results has received increasing research attention. However, there is a large property and distributional difference between optical and SAR data, resulting in an enormous challenge to fuse the inherent correlation information to better characterize land features. Additionally, scale differences in various features in remote sensing images also influence the classification results. To this end, an optical and SAR Siamese semantic segmentation network, OPT-SAR-MS2Net, is proposed. This network can intelligently learn effective multi-source features and realize end-to-end interpretation of multi-source data. Firstly, the Siamese network is used to extract features from optical and SAR images in different channels. In order to fuse the complementary information, the multi-source feature fusion module fuses the cross-modal heterogeneous remote sensing information from both high and low levels. To adapt to the multi-scale features of the land object, the multi-scale feature-sensing module generates multiple information perception fields. This enhances the network's capability to learn contextual information. The experimental results obtained using WHU-OPT-SAR demonstrate that our method outperforms the state of the art, with an mIoU of 45.2% and an OA of 84.3%. In this study, a tracking and pointing control system with a dual-FSM (fast steering mirror) two-dimensional flexible turntable composite axis is proposed. It is applied to the target-tracking accuracy control in a GI LiDAR (ghost imaging LiDAR) system. Ghost imaging is a multi-measurement imaging method; the dual-FSM GI LiDAR tracking and pointing imaging control system proposed in this study mainly solves the problems of the high-resolution remote sensing imaging of high-speed moving targets and various nonlinear disturbances when this technology is transformed into practical applications. Addressing the detrimental effects of nonlinear disturbances originating from internal flexible mechanisms and assorted external environmental factors on motion control's velocity, stability, and tracking accuracy, a nonlinear active disturbance rejection control (NLADRC) method based on artificial neural networks is advanced. Additionally, to overcome the limitations imposed by receiving aperture constraints in GI LiDAR systems, a novel optical path design for the dual-FSM GI LiDAR tracking and imaging system is put forth. The implementation of the described methodologies culminated in the development of a dual-FSM GI LiDAR tracking and imaging system, which, upon thorough experimental validation, demonstrated significant improvements. Notably, it achieved an improvement in the coarse tracking accuracy from 193.29 μrad (3σ) to 87.21 μrad (3σ) and enhanced the tracking accuracy from 10.1 μrad (σ) to 1.5 μrad (σ) under specified operational parameters. Furthermore, the method notably diminished the overshoot during the target capture process from 28.85% to 12.8%, concurrently facilitating clear recognition of the target contour. SAR imagery plays a crucial role in geological and environmental monitoring, particularly in highland mountainous regions. However, inherent geometric distortions in SAR images often undermine the precision of remote sensing analyses. Accurately identifying and classifying these distortions is key to analyzing their origins and enhancing the quality and accuracy of monitoring efforts. While the layover and shadow map (LSM) approach is commonly utilized to identify distortions, it falls short in classifying subtle ones. This study introduces a novel LSM ground-range slope (LG) method, tailored for the refined identification of minor distortions to augment the LSM approach. We implemented the LG method on Sentinel-1 SAR imagery from the tri-junction area where the Xiaojiang, Pudu, and Jinsha rivers converge at the Yunnan-Sichuan border. By comparing effective monitoring-point densities, we evaluated and validated traditional methods—LSM, R-Index, and P-NG—against the LG method. The LG method demonstrates superior performance in discriminating subtle distortions within complex terrains through its secondary classification process, which allows for precise and comprehensive recognition of geometric distortions. Furthermore, our research examines the impact of varying slope parameters during the classification process on the accuracy of distortion identification. The emerging technology of rotating synthetic aperture (RSA) presents a promising solution for the development of lightweight, large-aperture, and high-resolution optical remote sensing systems in geostationary orbit. However, the rectangular shape of the primary mirror and the distinctive imaging mechanism involving the continuous rotation of the mirror lead to a pronounced decline in image resolution along the shorter side of the rectangle compared to the longer side. The resolution also exhibits periodic time-varying characteristics. To address these limitations and enhance image quality, we begin by analyzing the imaging mechanism of the RSA system. Subsequently, we propose a single-image super-resolution method that utilizes a rotated varied-size window attention mechanism instead of full attention, based on the Vision Transformer architecture. We employ a two-stage training methodology for the network, where we pre-train it on images masked with stripe-shaped masks along the shorter side of the rectangular pupil. Following that, we fine-tune the network using unmasked images. Through the strip-wise mask sampling strategy, this two-stage training approach effectively circumvents the interference of lower confidence (clarity) information and outperforms training the network from scratch using the unmasked degraded images. Our digital simulation and semi-physical imaging experiments demonstrate that the proposed method achieves satisfactory performance. Extracting buildings in urban scenes from remote sensing images is crucial for the construction of digital cities, urban monitoring, urban planning, and autonomous driving. Traditional methods generally rely on shadow detection or stereo matching from multi-view high-resolution remote sensing images, which is cost-intensive. Recently, machine learning has provided solutions for the estimation of building heights from remote sensing images, but challenges remain due to the limited observation angles and image quality. The inherent lack of information in a single modality greatly limits the extraction precision. This article proposes an advanced method using multi-source remote sensing images for urban building height estimation, which is characterized by multi-level cross-fusion, the multi-task joint learning of footprint extraction and height estimation, and semantic information to refine the height estimation results. The complementary and effective features of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and electro-optical (EO) images are transferred through multi-level cross-fusion. We use the semantic information of the footprint extraction branch to refine the height estimation results, enhancing the height results from coarse to fine. Finally, We evaluate our model on the SpaceNet 6 dataset and achieve 0.3849 and 0.7231 in the height estimation metric δ 1 and footprint extraction metric D i c e , respectively, which indicate effective improvements in the results compared to other methods. Having an additional tool for swiftly determining the extent of flood damage to crops with confidence is beneficial. This study focuses on estimating rice crop damage caused by flooding in Candaba, Pampanga, using open-source satellite data. By analyzing the correlation between Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) measurements from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and Sentinel-2 (S2) satellite data, a cost-effective and time-efficient alternative for agricultural monitoring is explored. This study comprises two stages: establishing a correlation between clear sky observations and NDVI measurements, and employing a combination of S2 NDVI and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) NDVI to estimate crop damage. The integration of SAR and optical satellite data overcomes cloud cover challenges during typhoon events. The accuracy of standing crop estimation reached up to 99.2%, while crop damage estimation reached up to 99.7%. UAVs equipped with multispectral cameras prove effective for small-scale monitoring, while satellite imagery offers a valuable alternative for larger areas. The strong correlation between UAV and satellite-derived NDVI measurements highlights the significance of open-source satellite data in accurately estimating rice crop damage, providing a swift and reliable tool for assessing flood damage in agricultural monitoring. The Biomass Proxy is a new cloud-free vegetation monitoring product that offers timely and analysis-ready data indicative of above-ground crop biomass dynamics at 10m spatial resolution. The Biomass Proxy links the consistent and continuous temporal signal of the Sentinel-1 Cross Ratio (CR), a vegetation index derived from Synthetic Aperture Radar backscatter, with the spatial information of the Sentinel-2 Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), a vegetation index derived from optical observations. A global scaling relationship between CR and NDVI forms the basis of a novel fusion methodology based on static and dynamic combinations of temporal and spatial responses of CR and NDVI at field level. The fusion process is used to mitigate the impact on product quality of low satellite revisit periods due to acquisition design or persistent cloud coverage, and to respond to rapid changes in a timely manner to detect environmental and management events. The resulting Biomass Proxy provides time series that are continuous, unhindered by clouds, and produced uniformly across all geographical regions and crops. A space-borne remote sensing method was applied, validated, and demonstrated in a case study on the Samuel de Champlain Bridge in Montreal, Canada. High-resolution C-band radar satellite imagery was analyzed using the Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar technique to derive bridge displacements and compare them against theoretical estimates. Multispectral and long-wave thermal infrared satellite imagery acquired during the InSAR observation period and historical environmental data were analyzed to provide context for the interpretation and understanding of InSAR results. Thermal deformation measurements compared well with their theoretical estimates based on known bridge geometry and ambient temperature data. Non-thermal deformation measurements gave no evidence of settlement during the 2-year monitoring period, as would normally be expected for a newly constructed bridge with its foundation on bedrock. The availability of environmental data obtained from multispectral and thermal infrared satellite imagery was found to be useful in providing context for the bridge stability assessment. Ambient temperature measurements from thermal infrared satellite imagery were found to be a suitable alternative in cases where data from in situ temperature sensors or nearby weather stations are not available or not fit for purpose. No strong correlation was found between the river conditions and bridge deformation results from the InSAR analysis; this is partly due to the fact that most of these effects act along the river flow in the north–south direction, to which the satellite sensor is not sensitive. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images are inevitably interspersed with speckle noise due to their coherent imaging mechanism, which greatly hinders subsequent related research and application. In recent studies, deep learning has become an effective tool for despeckling remote sensing images. However, preserving more texture details while removing speckle noise remains a challenging task in the field of SAR image despeckling. Furthermore, most despeckling algorithms are designed specifically for a specific look and seriously lack generalizability. Therefore, in order to remove speckle noise in SAR images, a novel end-to-end frequency domain decomposition network (SAR−FDD) is proposed. The method first performs frequency domain decomposition to generate high-frequency and low-frequency information. In the high-frequency branch, a mean filter is employed to effectively remove noise. Then, an interactive dual-branch framework is utilized to learn the details and structural information of SAR images, effectively reducing speckles by fully utilizing features from different frequencies. In addition, a blind denoising model is trained to handle noisy SAR images with unknown noise levels. The experimental results demonstrate that the SAR−FDD achieves good visual effects and high objective evaluation metrics on both simulated and real SAR test sets (peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR): 27.59 ± 1.57 and structural similarity index (SSIM): 0.78 ± 0.05 for different speckle noise levels), demonstrating its strong denoising performance and ability to preserve edge textures. Many previous studies have primarily focused on the use of deep learning for interferometric processing or separate recognition purposes rather than targeted measurements of detected wellpads. The present study centered around the integration of deep learning recognition and interferometric measurements for Tengiz oilfield wellpads. This study proposes the optimization, automation, and acceleration of targeted ground deformation wellpad monitoring. Mask Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (R-CNN)-based deep learning wellpad recognition and consequent Small Baseline Subset Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (SBAS-InSAR) analyses were used for the assessment of ground deformation in the wellpads. The Mask R-CNN technique allowed us to detect 159 wells with a confidence level of more than 95%. The Mask R-CNN model achieved a precision value of 0.71 and a recall value of 0.91. SBAS-InSAR interferometric measurements identified 13 wells for Sentinel-1 (SNT1), 8 wells for COSMO-SkyMed (CSK), and 20 wells for TerraSAR-X (TSX) located within the −54–−40 mm/y class of vertical displacement (VD) velocity. Regression analyses for the annual deformation velocities and cumulative displacements (CD) of wells derived from SNT1, CSK, and TSX satellite missions showed a good agreement with R2 > 95. The predictions for cumulative displacements showed that the vertical subsidence processes will continue and reach −339 mm on 31 December 2023, with increasing spatial coverage and the potential to impact a higher number of wells. The hydrological analyses in the Tengiz oilfield clearly demonstrated that water flow has been moving towards the detected hotspot of subsidence and that its accumulation will increase with increasing subsidence. This detected subsidence hotspot was observed at a crossing with a seismic fault that might always be subject to reactivation. The role of this seismic fault should also be investigated as one of the ground deformation-controlling factors, even though this area is not considered seismically active. Wildfires play a crucial role in the transformation of forest ecosystems and exert a significant influence on the global climate over geological timescales. Recent shifts in climate patterns and intensified human–forest interactions have led to an increase in the incidence of wildfires. These fires are characterized by their extensive coverage, higher frequency, and prolonged duration, rendering them increasingly destructive. To mitigate the impact of wildfires on climate change, ecosystems, and biodiversity, it is imperative to conduct systematic monitoring of wildfire progression and evaluate their environmental repercussions on a global scale. Satellite remote sensing is a powerful tool, offering precise and timely data on terrestrial changes, and has been extensively utilized for wildfire identification, tracking, and impact assessment at both local and regional levels. The Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation, in collaboration with the Canadian Forest Service, has developed a comprehensive National Burned Area Composite (NBAC). This composite serves as a benchmark for curating a bi-temporal multi-source satellite image dataset for change detection, compiled from the archives of Sentinel-2, Sentinel-1, and ALOS-2 PALSAR-2. To our knowledge, this dataset is the inaugural large-scale, multi-source, and multi-frequency satellite image dataset with 20 m spatial resolution for wildfire mapping, monitoring, and evaluation. It harbors significant potential for enhancing wildfire management strategies, building upon the profound advancements in deep learning that have contributed to the field of remote sensing. Based on our curated dataset, which encompasses major wildfire events in Canada, we conducted a systematic evaluation of the capability of multi-source satellite earth observation data in identifying wildfire-burned areas using statistical analysis and deep learning. Our analysis compares the difference between burned and unburned areas using post-event observation solely or bi-temporal (pre- and post-event) observations across diverse land cover types. We demonstrate that optical satellite data yield higher separability than C-Band and L-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), which exhibit considerable overlap in burned and unburned sample distribution, as evidenced by SAR-based boxplots. With U-Net, we further explore how different input channels influence the detection accuracy. Our findings reveal that deep neural networks enhance SAR's performance in mapping burned areas. Notably, C-Band SAR shows a higher dependency on pre-event data than L-Band SAR for effective detection. A comparative analysis of U-Net and its variants indicates that U-Net works best with single-sensor data, while the late fusion architecture marginally surpasses others in the fusion of optical and SAR data. Accuracy across sensors is highest in closed forests, with sequentially lower performance in open forests, shrubs, and grasslands. Future work will extend the data from both spatial and temporal dimensions to encompass varied vegetation types and climate zones, furthering our understanding of multi-source and multi-frequency satellite remote sensing capabilities in wildfire detection and monitoring. In this work, backscattering signatures of snow-covered lake ice and sea ice from X- and Ku-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data are investigated. The SAR data were acquired with the ESA airborne SnowSAR sensor in winter 2012 over Lake Orajärvi in northern Finland and over landfast ice in the Bay of Bothnia of the Baltic Sea. Co-incident with the SnowSAR acquisitions, in situ snow and ice data were measured. In addition, time series of TerraSAR-X images and ice mass balance buoy data were acquired for Lake Orajärvi in 2011–2012. The main objective of our study was to investigate relationships between SAR backscattering signatures and snow depth over lake and sea ice, with the ultimate objective of assessing the feasibility of retrieval of snow characteristics using X- and Ku-band dual-polarization (VV and VH) SAR over freshwater or sea ice. This study constitutes the first comprehensive survey of snow backscattering signatures at these two combined frequencies over both lake and sea ice. For lake ice, we show that X-band VH-polarized backscattering coefficient ( σ o ) and the Ku-band VV/VH-ratio exhibited the highest sensitivity to the snow depth. For sea ice, the highest sensitivity to the snow depth was found from the Ku-band VV-polarized σ o and the Ku-band VV/VH-ratio. However, the observed relations were relatively weak, indicating that at least for the prevailing snow conditions, obtaining reliable estimates of snow depth over lake and sea ice would be challenging using only X- and Ku-band backscattering information. Coasts are continually changing and remote sensing from satellites has the potential to both map and monitor coastal change at multiple scales. Unlike optical technology, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is uninfluenced by darkness, clouds, and rain, potentially offering a higher revision period to map shoreline position and change, but this can only be feasible if we have a better interpretation of what shorelines as extracted from SAR imagery represent on the ground. This study aims to assess the application of shorelines extracted from SAR from publicly available satellite imagery to map and capture intra-annual to inter-annual shoreline variability. This is assessed in three tidally controlled coastal study areas that represent sand and gravel beaches with different backshore environments: low-lying dunes and marsh; steep, rocky cliff; and urban environments. We have found that SAR shorelines consistently corresponded to positions above the high-water mark across all three sites. We further discuss the influence of the scene geometry, meteorological and oceanographic conditions, and backshore environment and provide a conceptual interpretation of SAR-derived shorelines. In a low-lying coastal setting, the annual change rate derived through SAR presents a high degree of alignment with the known reference values. The present study contributes to our understanding of the poorly known aspect of using shorelines derived from publicly available SAR satellite missions. It outlines a quantitative approach to automatically assess their quality with a new automatic detection method that is transferable to shoreline evolution assessments worldwide. Multispectral remote sensing (RS) data and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data can provide horizontal and vertical information about forest AGB under different stand conditions. With the abundance of RS features extracted from multispectral and SAR datasets, a key point for accurate forest AGB estimation is to use suitable feature optimization inversion algorithms. In this study, feature optimization inversion algorithms including multiple linear stepwise regression (MLSR), K-nearest neighbor with fast iterative feature selection (KNN-FIFS), and random forest (RF) were explored, with a total of 93 RS features working as inversion model input for forest AGB inversion. The results showed that KNN-FIFS with the combination of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 performed best at both test sites (R2 = 0.568 and RMSE = 15.05 t/hm2 for Puer and R2 = 0.511 and RMSE = 32.29 t/hm2 for Genhe). Among the three feature optimization inversion algorithms, RF performed worst for forest AGB estimation with R2 = 0.348 and RMSE = 18.06 t/hm2 for Puer and R2 = 0.345 and RMSE = 35.98 t/hm2 for Genhe using the feature combination of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2. The results indicated that a combination of features extracted from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 can improve the inversion accuracy of forest AGB, and the KNN-FIFS algorithm has robustness and transferability in forest AGB inversions. Remote sensing technologies have been successfully used for deforestation monitoring, and with the wide availability of satellite products from different platforms, forest monitoring applications have grown in recent years. The observed potential in these technologies motivates the development of forest mapping and monitoring tools that could also be used for neighboring applications like agriculture or land-use mapping. A literature review confirmed the research areas of interest in deforestation monitoring using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and data fusion techniques, which guided the formulation of the method developed in this article consisting of a data preprocessing workflow for SAR (Sentinel-1) and multispectral (Sentinel-2) data and a procedure for the selection of a machine learning model for forest/nonforest segmentation evaluated in different combinations of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 bands. The selected model is a random forest algorithm that uses C-band SAR dual-polarimetric bands, intensity features, and vegetation indices derived from optical/multispectral data. The selected random forest classifier's balanced accuracies were 79–81%, and the f1-scores were 0.72–0.76 for the validation set. The results allow the obtention of yearly forest/nonforest and forest loss maps in the study area of Bajo Cauca in Colombia, a region with a documented high deforestation rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
