- Abstract
Each of the four Cultural Attitude Scales (CAS) contains fifteen graphic illustrations of the dress, sports, food and popular symbols for the Anglo American, Black American, Mexican American, and Puerto Rican cultures, respectively. Designed to measure ethnic identity or cross-cultural awareness for grades one to six, they do not require reading ability. The child indicates an attitude toward each illustration by marking one of five faces on a happy- to-sad Likert scale; an alternate response option indicates no knowledge of the particular cultural referent. Each scale thus yields two scores: attitude and knowledge. Despite the similarities in form and context, each scale is independent. The scales can be administered alone or in combination. (The scales are included. A Technical Report discusses their development and describes studies confirming their reliability and validity relative to teacher ratings, sociometric choices, and verbal cultural attitudes. Tables display the item analysis data and percentile norms.) (Author/CP)
