The article presents the abstracts of papers presented at the 59th Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers held September 1 to 5, 1963 in Denver, Colorado. When violence broke out in the strike-ridden coalfields of Colorado in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson was called upon to send federal troops into the State. Wilson had already made several attempts to bring about a settlement and was now faced with a decision fraught with political implications. The role Wilson played in the strike — the story of his critical decision to use federal troops — is less well known. In the spring of 1914, Wilson had problems enough on the international scene. Tension was mounting in Europe and, more immediately, the incident in Mexico had reached proportions of an inter-American crisis. Then, in April, violence flared up in Colorado, and Wilson ordered federal troops to occupy part of that State. Understanding the decision behind this movement is important in understanding Wilson's attitude toward the presidency. The situation in Colorado had not developed suddenly. The State had earlier been the site of serious labor disturbances in the mineral industry and these disturbances left a legacy that would intensify emotions of Colorado's citizens when the 1913 strike began.

The annual meeting of the American Sociological Society will be held in Denver, Colorado, from September 7-9, 1950. The program will be planned with an emphasis on the applications of social-psychological history and method to a variety of substantive fields in sociology. This means that a considerable number of traditional sections will be recognized in the program and the chairmen asked to assemble papers with the emphasis indicated. Sections to be included in the program are: Theory, Methods, The Family, Criminology, Population. Rural Sociology, Industrial Sociology. Community, Sociology and Psychiatry, Race and Culture. Educational Sociology, Communication and Public Opinion, Sociology and Social Work, and two section meetings of contributed papers.

This article is based on a paper delivered by the author at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association in Boulder, Colorado in September 1955. In the article, the author describes the three current forms of election behavior research: historical, ecological and survey. He recommends the conscious merging of these three, suggests other methodological cross fertilizations and outlines four areas of research which he thinks are especially fruitful. The author, formerly a partner in Elmo Roper and Associates, recently started his own organization, Louis Harris and Associates. To the best of the author's knowledge, a truly comprehensive analysis of election behavior research in the Western world has not been done in detailed, inventory terms. The paper represents only selective observations about some of the places people have been in this area of analyzing voting. It discusses those avenues which in the author's view are some of the promising areas for further research and finally some concrete suggestions on the care and feeding of those who plan to engage in future research efforts.

The article summarizes the panel discussion on research and teaching related problems in small departments held at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Society in Denver, Colorado, on September 9, 1950. The discussion aimed to recognize the large number of its members who teach in smaller colleges and universities. It also tried to study teaching and research in the smaller institutions and to identify their problems and their contributions to the development of sociology.

The article focuses on the analysis of the professionalism among the press people in Colorado. The study was designed to explore the relationships in the readings of Advanced Placement American history papers when using the analytic and holistic methods of reading. The study offers a point to the desirability of reducing the systematic differences attributed to readers. Readers are desired to grade a common set of papers and compare the number of points assigned by each reader to the papers. The study based on the procedure that needs to be repeated everyday through the use of various random sample of papers to identify any possibility of change in the standards from day to day.

The article presents the author's comments on the research paper by professor Elmore Petersen published in the April 2, 1940 issue of the "Journal of Marketing." The geographic economy of Denver, Colorado is used as an example of trading area research. Differences between the Denver market and the market in Akron, Ohio are noted. A survey of locational factors in manufacturing from Akron is referenced. Many companies reported geographic changes in their trade areas due to the depression and rubber companies' decentralization.

The Spanish-speaking villagers of the mountain valleys of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado, isolated for centuries from outside influence, have retained a folk medical system which, at times, is at odds with that of the "scientific" medical community. The concept of good or normal health is basically equated to that of "adequately functioning" in one's age-sex role. The common criteria for identification as healthy are: (1) a high level of physical activity, (2) a well-fleshed body, and (3) the absence of pain. A basic purpose of this paper has been to define in detail the culturally specific elements of these criteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the role of insurance and risk education. Concern over the role of insurance and risk education is, of course, not a new one for most members of the American Risk & Insurance Association Inc. (ARIA). Discussions of this nature have been carried on within the Association dating back to the author's first experience as an insurance teacher in the late 1940's. Further, long after most of us have left education, this subject will still be discussed, and most appropriately so. After all, if review, reevaluation, and exploration of the role of insurance and risk education is not perpetual, so as to make it more dynamic and meaningful, then perhaps our specific interest in education for business has a relatively short future. It is significant that the role of insurance education is one that we are now exploring in the College of Business Administration of the University of Denver.

Through recognition and removal of effects of the several sources of bias outlined above, recreation valuation method can yield better estimates of the values they were designed to measure. While the monopoly revenue valuation estimate lacks complete comparability with market values, it probably suffers from fewer sources of bias. In spite of die problems of non comparability of values obtained from these methods, it must be recognized that commonly accepted values for many of the products of public agencies are administered prices. Visitor survey and consumers surplus estimates not only lack comparability, but incorporate recognized and, so far, uncorrectable sources of bias. In discussing sources of bias, examples are used from a case study of a portion of the Cache la Poudre River in Colorado. It is the purpose of this paper to point out sources of methodological bias in three of these schemes, to outline means for correction of some of these, and to discuss the error of unqualified use in allocation models of the value estimates they provide.

The 55th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Agronomy was held in Denver, Colorado on November 17-21, 1963. The general theme of the meetings was stated to be Pan American Agronomy and the symposium featured was entitled "Agronomy in the Americas." The "Science Lodge Conference on Inland Field Stations" was held at the Science Lodge Mountain Research Station, located in the Colorado Front Range, Colorado, on June 22, 1963. The Rochester "Conference on Data Acquisition and Processing in Medicine and Biology" will be held at the University of Rochester Whipple Auditorium in Rochester, New York, on July 13-15, 1964.

"Complete Services for Mentally Retarded: A Comprehensive Look at State Institutions and Community Facilities" is the theme of the convention. The convention will on held on May 15-20, 1967 in Denver, Colorado.

The article reports on the geographic divisions of the wholesale trade. 'Wholesale trade' is defined as trade between middle men or from merchants to retailers. The two most important concerns to wholesalers with regard to trading area are: determining the most appropriate trading area, and measuring the market potential in a specific territory. Trading areas are formed based on the size of a business, the type of product which is sold, and with regard to the geography of the region. The author states that industrial development needs a local population base for support. Denver, Colorado is discussed as a distribution center, as opposed to a regional industrial base.

The article discusses the U.S. crisis on government secrecy and its impact on American democracy. In Denver, Colorado, farmers noticed an agriculture problem which poisoned the crops in the farm. The farmers thought that it was caused by Army's nearby Rocky Mountain Arsenal. This arsenal dumped waste from manufacture of war gases into a reservoir located on high ground southeast of the affected farm lands. Government scientists and geologists responded to the case and had agreed to keep whatever scientific results confidentially to the public. This decision has become an illustration of one of the most critical problems facing U.S. democracy. It creates denial to the people of the important information necessary for them to complete their role as self-governing citizens.
