2. PHYTOPLANKTON OF THE SUSQUEHANNA RIVER NEAR BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK: SEASONAL VARIATIONS: EFFECT OF SEWAGE EFFLUENTS.

Abstract

Net phytoplankton samples were collected weekly for 13 months at points above and below sewage effluents. Sixty-three genera and 130 taxa were identified: diatoms, 19 genera, 44 taxa; greens, 31 genera, 67 taxa; blue-greens, 6 genera, 8 taxa. Down-stream from the sewage effluents the number of taxa was unchanged but the number of organisms was definitely increased. This increase was most pronounced for green and blue-green algae, and least for diatoms. The seasonal distribution of algae was that usually seen in waters for the North Temperate Zone. The particular taxa and number of taxa found were those productive waters but not typical of heavily polluted waters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The article presents the findings of the Continuing Study of Newspaper Reading conducted by the Advertising Research Foundation in Binghamton, New York in 1942. The study found that readership of war advertisements is high among male and female readers. It showed that the advertisements "Attention: Hitler, Hirohito, Musolini & Co." and "Service with a Grease Gun" both ranked first in readership of local and national advertisements, respectively.

The article looks at the job of several women at a factory of camera films of Ansco in Binghamton, New York. Factory rooms are compared to a coal mine. The corridor of spooling rooms are illuminated with green safe lights and has a broad white line on the floor to divide traffic. The company prohibits the use of cosmetics.
