The article presents information on the research paper "Pemphigus and Pemphigoids," by A. Touraine. The author divides bullous eruptions into the above two groups. In the former are the classical forms of pemphigus whilst the latter includes traumatic blisters, allergic reactions, infections, congenital lesions, dermatitis herpetiformis, etc. The author shows that there is no clinical chemical or haematological method of distinguishing dermatitis herpetiformis from pemphigus.

The output from a Coulter model S is captured by a specially designed silent interface which visualizes the results, automatically prints the data on a continuous paper roll and transmits the information to a card punch located in a data processing room. Further requested test data and patient identification data are subsequently added manually to the punch card. The completed deck of cards is used in an off-line batch mode on a dedicated laboratory computer to format report documents, produce ward listings, and quality control information. A punch card off-line method is also described for blood group and related data.

The article presents a study related to myeloma globulins which have been shown to have many of the properties of normal immunoglobulins. The proteins in the "narrow bands" from the sera of two patients were isolated for study, and evidence was obtained that the serological activities of these sera were confined to the &b.gamma;-globulin (M-component). The close structural similarity between antibodies and myeloma proteins suggests that myeloma proteins displaying antibody activity could occur. Whether the apparent antibody activity of the M-components described above has the same structural basis as that of normal antibody is as yet unknown.

A new hemoglobin variant, designated hemoglobin-St Luke's. was detected by routine starch-gel electrophoresis in four members of a Maltese family. The carriers of this abnormality are clinically and hematologically normal. Structural analyses showed the replacement of prolyl residue in position 95 (G2) of the alpha chain by an arginyl residue. The relative amount of hemoglobin-St Luke's present in the red cell hemolysates of its cagier is approximately 10 %, compared to about 23 % for hemoglobin-G Georgia and 15% for hemoglobin Rampa (the other two variant in which prolyl residue α95 (G2) is replaced). Sedimentation velocity studies of hemoglobin. St Luke's in NaCl solutions of increasing concentration up to 2 M indicate that the oxy derivative is extensively dissociated into dimers in 0.1 M NaCl at neutral pH; whereas under the same conditions, the deoxygenated molecule retains a tetrameric structure. In the deoxy state, appreciable tetramer formation occurs even in 2 M NaCl. In addition, association-dissociation in oxyor cyanferrihemoglobin St Luke's is troth pH and temperature dependent. The article presents a clinical and immunological study of pernicious anaemia in the Chinese. Addisonian pernicious anaemia has been rarely reported in Chinese. Between 1949 and 1965, in a busy haematological clinic in Hong Kong, only three Chinese have satisfied the diagnostic criteria for and showed the typical serological reactions of Addisonian pernicious anaemia. In view of the clinical and immunological association that is known to exist between Addisonian pernicious anaemia and thyrotoxicosis in Western populations, a study was undertaken to determine the incidence of gastric autoimmunity and of gastric atrophy in 102 Chinese patients with thyrotoxicosis.

The article presents a study in which two rhesus monkeys were injected with monkey thyroid extract plus complete Freund adjuvant, and the immunopathological changes were followed for over a year. In one monkey the level of antibody to thyroglobulin. as measured by tanned cell haemagglutination, increased gradually over the period. Antibodies to constituents of the ihyroid epithelial cells themselves were demonstrated by complement fixation and cytotoxic reactions. The second monkey produced the highest titre of tanned cell haemagglutinating antibody early in immunization, followed by gradual decrease. Examinations revealed regression and regeneration so that 18 months after initiation of the experiment, the thyroid gland was nearly normal in appearance.

The article describes the results of surgical thymectomy in three patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) observed over periods of 1-3 years. The haematological and clinical biochemical procedures used as indices of 'activity' of lupus erythematosus included the level of haemoglobin and serum iron, the lymphocyte count and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Thymectomy in ther three patients with severe lupus erythematosus may have had at best an ameliorative effect on the long-term course of the disease, but thymectotny clearly did not induce a sustained remission, nor prevent the need for maintenance treatment with corticosleroid drugs, nor influence the serum titre of the most characteristic autoantibody of lupus erythemaiosus, the antinuclear autoantibody.

This article presents a transcript of a presentation on the hematological aspects of a case of a systemic lupus erythematosus at the Clinical Conference St. Louis Children's Hospital. The case involves a 14-year-old white child from Clayton, Missouri, who was admitted at the St. Louis Children's Hospital. Laboratory studies on the child are presented.

All of seven sera with high titre cold agglutinins agglutinated rabbit red cells at 4° to similar titres as were recorded with human red cells. At 20° all the sera showed almost optimal activity against rabbit red cells, while the activity against human red cells was very weak. Two of the sera agglutinated rabbit red cells as strongly at 37° as at lower temperatures. The results of absorption and elution experiments indicated that the same agglutinin molecules were responsible for the agglutination of human red cells at 4° and of rabbit red cells at 37° Apparently the reaction with rabbit red cells was more specific than the reaction with human red cells. The variation in thermal amplitude observed when testing cold agglutinins with rabbit red cells may be an expression of variation in specificity e\ en when the different cold agglutinins appear to ha\ e identical specificity, anti-I, in tests with human red cells.
