The article presents information about the book "A Mound of Many Cities: or, Tell el-Hesy Excavated," by Frederick Jones Bliss. Tell el-Hesy is an ancient ruin mound in the rolling country "between the foot-hills of the rocky Judaen mountains and the rich plain of Philistia, sixteen miles east of Gaza, a little to the north and twenty three miles west of Hebron." Bliss states that his object in writing the volume "has been to present facts with as slight an admixture of theory as possible" and he has adhered to his purpose quite consistently. The book is a concise and exact statement of results of his excavations, but told with such admirable logical and literary skill that facts embody their own theory.

Explorer and author Richter presents a history of Cypriot research. The account of his excavations is given chiefly in the opening chapter of the first volume and in the explanations of the plates. The body of the work is devoted to an examination of Cyprian deities and cults, and their relation to Egyptian, Semitic, and Greek religious ideas and customs. It is, in fact, a contribution to the history of one side of the old Semitic-Greek religion.

The article presents information concerning the progress of excavations carried on at Corinth since 1896 by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. It would be an overstatement to say that last year's work was an absolute failure. In excavations, a negative result is, after all, worth something as a guide. Columns just mentioned proved to belong to the front line of a Greek portico running east and west back of the vaulted chambers found last year, as long as the well-known stoa of Attolos at Athens, over 100 metres long. Its breadth was so great that it was provided with an interior line of columns of the Ionic order, with Intercolumniations twice as great as those of the Doric columns at the front.

The author says that many ancient streets have been found in the city during the last four years. The article reports on the conflict between archaeologist Howard Carter and Mahammad Pasha Zaghlul, Egyptian Under Secretary of State for Public Works, during a visit to the Valley of the Kings to examine the state of tombs on the banks of the Nile River. Carter was prevented from entering Egypt and Cairo threatened Carter to cancel his excavation license. Carter, in response, commenced legal proceedings on two counts in the Egyptian mixed courts. A ministerial order was issued canceling the license of Countess Carnarvon, under which Carter operated.

The article reports on the discovery of stone hammers in Lake Superior by Samuel O. Knapp and J.B. Townsend of Michigan in March 1848. They found that the cavern was not a natural one, but had been made by human agency and the stone implements were tools being used to make the excavation. The hammers are water-worn stones with great hardness and the same in all respects to those that are discovered on the shore of the Lake.
