The article reports on the process of group discussion regarding the study of functions. The concept of function is described to be a central part of a mathematical thought and can be used specifically to illustrate problems of teaching. The function concept is also illustrated to be in a similar status as the class concept. The functions allows the student of mathematics to define what algebra means and geometry. It also gives fundamental mathematical tools in several areas of mathematics. Moreover, functions are considered to give fundamental building blocks in the study of mathematics.
