The conversion of an "old school bus" in the late 1960s into a mobile library is discussed. The conversion was an element of educational service developed cooperatively between a regional educational laboratory and a rural school system. The project endeavored to improve the early experiences of future students, many of whom would have never been beyond "the cross-road store within walking distance" before they entered the public education system.

A comparison is made of the percentage compositions of major fatty acids in liver and testis phospholipids, liver and abdominal adipose tissue triglycerides, and liver sterol esters in male Fischer-344 rats administered a physiological saline control or a “smoking” dose of nicotine (1000 μg base/kg/day, subcutaneously) for 2 or 22 months. Results indicate that there is no major trend, or significant difference, between nicotine- or saline-treated rats with respect to major fatty acid distribution. Some differences in fatty acid distribution in the various lipid fractions were found between young and old rats.

Whereas wild-type strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae can synthesize up to 7% dry weight of ergosterol, a polyene-resistant mutant has been obtained which produces no ergosterol. Instead, a C-28 methyl sterol is produced, and it has been identified as Δ8(9),22-ergostadiene-3β-ol. This sterol is converted to ergosterol by wild-type yeasts and is observed transiently in cells during aerobic adaption of anaerobically grown wild-type yeasts. The new sterol is proposed as an intermediate in ergosterol biosynthesis.

The mono-, di-, and triphosphoinositides of bovine brain were isolated by chromatography on columns of DEAE-cellulose, alumina, and silicic acid. The major molecular species in each phosphoinositide class were identified and quantitatively estimated by combined thin-layer and gas–liquid chromatography of the component diglycerides, which were released by hydrolysis with a specific brain phosphodiesterase. The diglycerides were treated with pancreatic lipase, and the positional distribution of the fatty acids was determined.Over 27 molecular species were identified, and these accounted for about 95% of each phosphoinositide class, but the 1-stearate 2-arachidonate derivative contributed more than 40% of the total in each class. The other molecular species also were qualitatively and quantitatively similar in the three phosphoinositide classes. All the long-chain and polyunsaturated acids were confined to the 2-position and were preferentially paired with stearic acid in the 1-position. Oleic acid in the 2-position was about equally divided between species with palmitic and stearic acids in the 1-position.These results suggest that the mono-, di-, and triphosphoinositides of the bovine brain have similar compositions and that the various molecular species may he metabolically related.

El gran número de empleados —un millar— pueden así estar reunidos en un solo edificio, con lo que se facilitan las interrelaciones y se consigue máxima rapidez y economía.

I discovered the following new genus o Syrphidae while reviewing the Neotropical Microdontinae. I had planned to put aside its description until my study of the subfamily was finished. However, publication of a second species assignable to it by van Doesburg (1966) has necessitated publishing a name now for this genus so that it can be incIuded in the Catalog of South American Diptera.
