The article focuses on Australian research work. A large proportion of the Australian research output comes from the government-financed Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, which operates about a hundred laboratories and field stations throughout the Commonwealth. Although this organization was formed primarily for the purpose of improving efficiency in the primary and secondary industries in Australia, much basic work having no immediate practical objective is in progress.
