The article examines the plant ecology of the central plateau of Iceland consisting of a desert lava, gravel and blown sand, based on the result of the Cambridge Expedition of 1932 and subsequent expeditions to the area. The desert is characterized by high dune-like hills and sandy flats between them, entirely black and a large glacier run through the cleft in the Vatnajökull mountain. Scree slopes and valleys, oases, hill tops and hot springs are the main vegetational habitats. Among the plant species found in the these habitats include Cerastium alpinum, Arabis petraea and Armeria maritima.
