Statistics of persons classified jointly by country of birth and country of residence have been published in England and Wales census volumes since 1851. This study draws mainly on the said data. A group of persons recorded in a census as natives of country A and residents of country B are sometimes referred to as lifetime migrants from country A to country B. An attempt is made in this study to transform lifetime migration data into intercensal migration streams. Some of the results are presented and the most significant migration patterns during the period 1851 to 1951 are described.
