5. A Historical Analysis of the Chicago Public Schools Major Reform Policies and Initiatives and Their Implications for Educational Leaders and Principals in Urban Areas under the Mayoral Term of Rahm Emanuel from 2011-2019

Abstract

This study provides a historical analysis of the Chicago Public Schools major reform policies and initiatives and their implications for educational leaders and principals in urban areas during the mayoral term of Rahm Emanuel. This analysis includes detailed reform initiatives implemented under several mayors and CEOs leading up to Mayor Rahm Emanuel's terms. It gives an account of the effects those reforms had on educational leaders' (principals) ability to implement them and informs future educational leaders on the challenges and success they may face while implementing school reform initiatives. The results of this study indicate that the extended school day, the new teacher evaluation, the Star Program, and universal full-day pre-kindergarten initiatives are the most successful and promising policies for urban school leaders to consider implementing, while privatization of schools and principal merit pay is found to be less effective. Privatization, in and of itself, does not appear to be an effective initiative as continued by Mayor Emanuel. However, the closings and shake-ups, which involved both privatized schools and district-run schools may be effective in contributing to increased student achievement because it allows the examination of underperforming schools. 8. Emanuel Haldeman-Julius and the Education of the Poor of America

Abstract

Emanuel Haldeman-Julius was born in Philadelphia in 1889, the son of poor Russian immigrants. Emanuel did not achieve much at school and worked in various jobs until he found his niche as a reporter for a variety of socialist newspapers. He married a wealthy heiress, became a publisher and eventually achieved fame and wealth. The cornerstone of his success was producing little blue books selling at five cents each. Eventually he published 500 million copies of these books which the poor were able to buy because of their low price. It is argued that Haldeman-Julius's publications made a major contribution to the cultural background, both scientific and literary, of the period in the United States of America. His little blue books were bought by children as the cheapest source of information. They were also purchased by working men intent on self advancement. The booklets reflected his general view and that of his authors, being socialist in politics and atheist in religious outlook. They promoted sex education, evolutionary theory and a wide range of excellent literature. However even with Haldeman-Julius's knowledge of and enthusiasm for evolution, he failed to see the demise of the little blue books, which did not change sufficiently over time.

10. Emanuel syndrome and congenital diaphragmatic hernia: A systematic review.

Abstract

• Emanuel syndrome is rare, but increasingly detected and potentially survivable. • Identification of rare but complex congenital anomalies challenges prenatal counseling. • Congenital diaphragmatic hernia is life-threatening and confers urgency to delivery planning. • This is the largest series of patients with Emanuel syndrome and congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Emanuel Syndrome (ES), a rare chromosomal disorder caused by a supernumerary chromosome 22 derivative (der(22)t(11;22)), was identified in a fetus with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) at our fetal center. We aimed to identify a precedent for clinical care and patient outcomes to guide family decision-making. This non-funded and non-registered study queried the entire CDH Registry (CDHR) including >10,000 patients since 1995 and conducted a systematic literature review for patients with concomitant ES and CDH. Literature review captured 12 citations and identified 9 patients with CDH+ES from over 400 known ES cases. Given the rarity of the disease and to reduce bias, there were no exclusion criteria aside from non-English language. Of these 9, two underwent surgical CDH repair with neither surviving. The CDHR identified 6 patients with ES, all reported after 2013 and prenatally diagnosed. Median estimated gestational age was 39 weeks (range 37–40) and median birth weight was 2.72 kg (range 2.4–3.4 kg). 3 patients died within the first few postnatal days; surgical repair was not offered due to "anomalies" and "pulmonary hypertension" in two and one family chose comfort measures. The other 3 patients underwent surgical repair, and 2 were supported with ECMO. Two patients survived to discharge, incurring surgical comorbidities associated with severe CDH including gastrostomy dependence, tracheostomy, and CDH recurrence. ES patients with CDH have potential to tolerate repair and survive to discharge, however with significant additional morbidity combined with severe challenges inherent to ES. 11. Emanuel and Eleonore Schikaneder: Coming into Their Own, 1777-79.

Abstract

Emanuel Schikaneder is remembered as the impresario and librettist behind the creation of Die Zauberflöte (1791). Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed the music for Theater auf der Wieden in Vienna, which was managed by Schikaneder and his wife Eleonore. Most of the secondary literature about Emanuel Schikaneder focuses on the period of his directorship of Theater auf der Wieden (1788-1801). But there has been relatively little focus on Eleonore Schikaneder's contributions, nor on the couple's first years as theater directors (1778-1779). This article uses previously unpublished archival documentation and recently available digital sources--namely the published journals of company member Friderich Hasenest--to follow the Schikaneders' strategies for securing engagements during their first two years leading a theater company. It also underscores the accomplishments of Eleonore Schikaneder. The accompanying tables allow the reader to trace the company's grueling schedule of performances and evolving repertory. The author provides new translations of contemporary reviews and commentary. The documentation presented illustrates that although the Schikaneders ran afoul of authorities more than once, they were still able to parlay success with the public and support of influential friends into the development of a private theatrical enterprise of lasting importance. 12. Pedagogical Content Knowledge in School Economics

Abstract

How can creative teaching in economics education be identified and explored? A construct that assists understanding in this area is pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). It represents the merging of content and pedagogy to understand how particular topics or lessons are organised, represented, and adapted to students' diverse interests and abilities. This paper draws upon the author's research that explores teaching and learning in school economics to discuss this epistemological concept that blends the traditionally separated knowledge bases of content and pedagogy. The research involved interviewing and observing school economics teachers and student focus group interviews. Thematic analysis was employed to analyse the data. In this paper, I discuss the emergent theme of how teachers communicated their understanding of subject knowledge by developing their PCK to engage their students in learning. The considerations raised can assist lecturers, teachers, teacher educators, and researchers in enacting the teaching and learning process in economics and other disciplines.

18. The Relationship between Personality Factors, Vocational Identity and Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy

Abstract

Context: Adolescence is the training ground for adult life. In a relatively short period, the adolescent will undergo a metamorphosis. During the high school years, the majority of adolescents move from persistent dependence to true independence, from logical thinking to abstract, complex and hypothetical thinking, from impulsivity to consideration and from a diffuse feeling about one's own person to a reasonably defined self-identity. Adolescent's vocational identity formation during high school is an extremely important process in vocational and career counseling, because it helps them to make rational choices regarding the choice of a career gaining an increased level of career maturity. Methods: The present study had as participants 300 Romanian teenagers which belong to the following paths of studies/profiles: formal sciences (specializations: Mathematics-informatics and Natural Sciences), services (specializations: Economics, trade, tourism and food) and humanities (specialization: Philology). The tools used in the adolescent evaluation process were Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy--Short Form Scale (CDMSE-SF), the Vocational Identity Status Assessment (VISA) and the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI-3). Results: After the interpretation of the obtained results, the following aspects were demonstrated: The identity status "career commitment" correlates with the personality traits -- neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience and conscientiousness, and regarding the career decision-making self-efficacy it correlates with the self-evaluation process, obtaining information about self and professions, setting goals, career planning and the problem-solving process. Identity status "identification with career commitment" correlates with personality traits -- extraversion, openness to experience and conscientiousness, and from the perspective of the career decision-making self-efficacy, it correlates with the process of self-evaluation, obtaining information about self and professions, setting goals, solving problems and career planning. The identity status "career commitment flexibility" correlates with the personality traits neuroticism and conscientiousness, and from the perspective of the career decision-making self-efficacy it correlates with the problem-solving process. Identity status "career self-doubt" correlates positively with the personality trait neuroticism and negatively with conscientiousness, the process of self-evaluation, obtaining information about self and professions, setting goals, career planning and problem solving. Conclusion: The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between vocational identity, personality factors and career decision-making self-efficacy. The results demonstrated that certain personality traits, respectively certain components of career decision-making self-efficacy are predictors for the adolescent's vocational identity formation.

21. Assessing Developments in Play of Young Children

Abstract

This paper follows an earlier report of young children's object play activities investigated in a cross-sectional sample of 289 typically developing children. Thirty-minute videotaped observations were taken of children at 8, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, and 60 months of age in their homes. Forty-nine percent were boys. Children were identified as White (70%); mixed racial/cultural backgrounds (14%); Asian (7%); Black (6%); and Latinx (3%). This study reports patterns of cognitive development based on mastery scores derived from frequency and variety of activities in the 27 categories identified in the earlier study. Mastery scores afforded evaluation of the robustness of certain play categories, and the retention and reduction of others, yielding a final set of 14 to describe and assess developments in play. Discussion centers on the value of differentiated categories along with scores that yield a standard for an assessment of children's play.
