International audience; In 2018, the regional seismic network JURAQUAKE has been deployed in eastern France, in addition to the RESIF-EPOS network. The objective is to better characterize the local microseismicity affecting the northern part of the Jura arc (Larroque et al., 2021) and investigate the potential role of fluids in triggering earthquakes in this faulted and karstified region. Actually, three seismic stations have been installed on a karst aquifer and coupled to an existing hydrogeological observatory (JURASSIC KARST - SNO KARST), allowing to monitor water flow and sediment transport. In addition, 500 m of fiber optic cable has been placed along the underground karstic conduit in order to investigate hydrogeological recharge and transfer processes into the system. A very-high resolution 3D scan of the cavity was also acquired with a long-range Zeb-REVO to document the geological structures. Such multidisciplinary approach is relevant to better understand the functioning of the aquifer, as well as the spatio-temporal variations that occur along the karstic network.

OZCAR-RI is a network of instrumented sites, bringing together 21 pre-existing research observatories monitoring different compartments of the zone situated between "the rock and the sky," the Earth's skin or critical zone (CZ), over the long term. These observatories are regionally based and have specific initial scientific questions, monitoring strategies, databases, and modeling activities. The diversity of OZCAR-RI observatories and sites is well representative of the heterogeneity of the CZ and of the scientific communities studying it. Despite this diversity, all OZCAR-RI sites share a main overarching mandate, which is to monitor, understand, and predict ("earthcast") the fluxes of water and matter of the Earth's near surface and how they will change in response to the "new climatic regime." The vision for OZCAR strategic development aims at designing an open infrastructure, building a national CZ community able to share a systemic representation of the CZ , and educating a new generation of scientists more apt to tackle the wicked problem of the Anthropocene. OZCAR articulates around: (i) a set of common scientific questions and cross-cutting scientific activities using the wealth of OZCAR-RI observatories, (ii) an ambitious instrumental development program, and (iii) a better interaction between data and models to integrate the different time and spatial scales. Internationally, OZCAR-RI aims at strengthening the CZ community by providing a model of organization for pre-existing observatories and by offering CZ instrumented sites. OZCAR is one of two French mirrors of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure (eLTER-ESFRI) project.

International audience; Emergent Contaminants (ECs) including nanoparticles (NPs) are preoccupation cause for concern for the scientific community, industrials, territorial communities and the general public. High production volume, potential release from consumer product, environmental exposure, we need to measure the environmental concentrations of NPs and their behavior in natural waters. This is too complicated given the complexity of natural particles and the similarity of Engineering NanoParticles (ENPs) with Natural NanoParticles (NNPs) called here NPs. Thus, we need new methods/protocols dedicated to NPs as ECs which cover the sampling strategy, the analysis and the data valorization using new approaches, theory, paradigms! Our objective is to propose a global approach addressing the above mentioned concerns conveying: sampling, analysis and concept(s) dedicated to Metallic Trace Elements (MTEs) and Nanoparticles (NPs). • Sampling: A crucial point due to the representativeness of the samples regarding a water mass (notion of flux) whose matrix integrates organic matter, chemical elements (from the major to the trace) ligands, biological compounds and contaminants such as MTEs and NPs? • Analysis: Once a representative sample is obtained, how to analyze with minimum artefacts (fractionation, metastable complexes over time, endogenous reaction between the different components, etc.)? What are the basic parameters necessary for understanding the fate of TMEs and NPs in the water column? • Concept(s): it should be holistic which means able to describe the main scenario allowing for consideration of the parameters controlling the fate and behavior of MTE and NPs. Holistic approach consists of sampling devices adapted to the target elements, user-friendly, easy to analyze using a dedicated analytical platform that fits the concept of physical chemical speciation.

International audience; Sources of water use by 10 alluvial trees in various hydrogeological and ecological situations at the Pfyn forest (Wallis canton, Switzerland) were assessed by analysing 18O and 2H isotopes of precipitation, soil water at different depths, surface water, groundwater and xylem sap. The soil water line in a δ18O versus δ2H diagram shows evidence of kinetic fractionation related to evaporation. The tree water line is close to the soil trend; however, an additional enrichment may occur and could be related to xylem–phloem communication under water stress. At sites where the water table was at least 2 m below the ground surface, isotopic temporal variability of soils and trees was strongly linked with seasonal variation of soil water content. When soil water content was low and water table shallow, trees used both soil water and groundwater. When soil water content was high, this source was usually the dominant source for transpiration. In addition, some ecological strategies, reproduction or growth competition, could explain shifts in the utilization of different water sources, for example, from soil water to a mix of soil water and groundwater. At one site where soil water and groundwater were abundant throughout the year (next to the river course), neighbouring trees permanently used distinct water sources. This is consistent with a strategy of competition limitation, which would favour bank colonization. These results provide insight into the ecohydrological functioning of this system and will aid future management responses to both local and climate changes.

International audience; The numerous thermo-mineral springs of Auvergne originate from the regional extensive dynamics, connected to the formation of the Alps, and which gave rise, in Auvergne, to a succession of horsts and grabens. These thermo-mineral springs are known and used since the Antiquity, as shown by numerous Gallo-Roman sites, and still have an economic role, regionally demonstrated by the presence of 10 thermal spas in Auvergne. The general circulation of these thermo-mineral waters corresponds to an infiltration of meteoric waters reaching deep zones of the crystalline basement via a dense network of faults. At this depth, waters acquire a high temperature and high content of gaseous CO2 which confer them a high power of dissolution. Thermo-mineral waters emerge from crystalline, sedimentary or volcanic rocks and present HCO3/Na or (Cl-HCO3)/Na types in connection with the regional geology. The present study concerns 16 springs located in Auvergne which were sampled and analyzed for physico-chemical parameters (T°C, EC, pH, CO2), major ions (Na, Ca, Mg, K, HCO3, Cl, SO4, NO3) and carbon-13. The study allows classifying springs according to their geologic context of circulation and emergence. Thermo-mineral springs appearing in crystalline basement are generally less mineralized than those emerging from sedimentary layers, mainly marly-calcareous. Isotopic determinations of carbon-13 highlight the endogenous origin of CO2 resulting from a mantelic degassing. The use of geothermometers allows calculating deep temperatures of groundwaters’ circulation. They vary between 134°C and 278°C that lead to the deduction of a depth of groundwaters’ circulation of 3 to 8 km, according to the local geothermic gradient between 3.3°c and 4°C/100m (Genter et al., 2003). An inventory on the chemistry of regional thermomineral springs have previously been realized (Négrel, 2004; Serra et al., 2003; Pauwels et al., 1997) and allows to define the origin of waters and to integrate the data of this study into a regional context. Besides, a time-following of the physico-chemical, chemical (major ions and traces) and isotopic parameters (oxygen-18, deuterium and carbon 13) was set up on the Ours’ thermomineral spring since January 2013 in order to verify the supposed stability of the chemical composition of this specific type of groundwater.

International audience; Hydrodynamic, hydrochemical, and isotopic investigations were carried out on 18 points, including boreholes, piezometers, and surface waters, from February 2011 to August 2012, to assess groundwater quality in the unconfined shallow alluvial aquifer of the Allier River (one of the main tributary of the Loire River). The study area, located near the city of Clermont-Ferrand (France), plays an important socio-economic role as the alluvial aquifer is the major source of drinking water for about 100,000 inhabitants. The objective of the project aims at understanding the functioning of alluvial aquifers that occupy a pre-eminent position in the hydrogeologic landscape both for their economic role - production of drinking water and agricultural development - and for their ecological role. Moreover, this study also targets at determining the factors and processes controlling shallow groundwater quality and origin. The water circulates from the south, with a natural alimentation from the hills in the non-pumped part of the alluvial aquifer. In the pumping zone, this general behaviour is altered by the pumping that makes the water from the Allier River enter the system in a large proportion. Four end-members have been identified for the recharge of the alluvial groundwater: rainfall, Allier River, surrounding hills' aquifer and the southern non-pumped part of the alluvial system. Results indicate that, despite the global Ca-HCO3 water type of the groundwater, spatial variations of physico-chemical parameters do exist in the study area. Ionic concentrations increase from the Allier River towards east due either to the increase in the residence time or a mixing with groundwater coming from the aquifer's borders. Stable isotopes of the water molecule show the same results: boreholes close to the river bank are recharged by the Allier River (depleted values), while boreholes far from the river exhibit isotopic contents close to the values of hills' spring or to the southern part of the alluvial aquifer, both recharged by local precipitation. One borehole (B65) does not follow this scheme of functioning and presents values attesting of a probable sealing of the Allier River banks. Based on these results, the contribution of each end-member has been calculated and the functioning of the alluvial system determined.

Due to the current analytical processes that are not able to measure all the pharmaceutical molecules and to the high costs and the consumption of time to sample and analyze PhACs, models to calculate Predicted Environmental Concentrations (PECs) have been developed. However a comparison between MECs and PECs, taking into account the methods of calculations and peculiarly the parameters included in the calculation (consumption data, pharmacokinetic parameters, elimination rate in STPs and in the environment), is necessary to assess the validity of PECs. MEC variations of sixteen target PhACs [acetaminophen (ACE), amlodipine (AML), atenolol (ATE), caffeine (CAF), carbamazepine (CAR), doxycycline (DOX), epoxycarbamazepine (EPO), fluvoxamine (FLU), furosemide (FUR), hydrochlorothiazide (HYD), ifosfamide (IFO), losartan (LOS), pravastatin (PRA), progesterone (PROG), ramipril (RAM), trimetazidine (TRI)] have been evaluated during one hydrological cycle, from October 2011 to October 2012 and compared to PECs calculated by using an adaptation of the models proposed by Heberer and Feldmann (2005) and EMEA (2006). Comparison of PECs and MECS has been achieved for six molecules: ATE, CAR, DOX, FUR, HYD and PRA. DOX, FUR and HYD present differences between PECs and MECs on an annual basis but their temporal evolutions follow the same trends. PEC evaluation for these PhACs could then be possible but need some adjustments of consumption patterns, pharmacokinetic parameters and/or mechanisms of (bio)degradation. ATE, CAR and PRA are well modeled; PECs can then be used as reliable estimation of concentrations without any reserve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SPATIO-temporal variation ,PLANT water requirements ,ISOTOPES ,HYDROGEOLOGY ,METEOROLOGICAL precipitation - Abstract
ABSTRACT Sources of water use by 10 alluvial trees in various hydrogeological and ecological situations at the Pfyn forest (Wallis canton, Switzerland) were assessed by analysing
18 O and2 H isotopes of precipitation, soil water at different depths, surface water, groundwater and xylem sap. The soil water line in a δ18 O versus δ2 H diagram shows evidence of kinetic fractionation related to evaporation. The tree water line is close to the soil trend; however, an additional enrichment may occur and could be related to xylem-phloem communication under water stress. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. - Abstract
Mineralization of groundwater in volcanic aquifers is partly acquired through silicates weathering. This alteration depends on the dissolution of atmospheric, biogenic, or mantellic gaseous CO whose contributions may depend on substratum geology, surface features, and lava flow hydrological functionings. Investigations of $$ {\text{P}}_{{{\text{CO}}_{ 2} {\text{eq}}}} $$ and δC (total dissolved inorganic carbon) on various spatiotemporal scales in the unsaturated and saturated zones of volcanic flows of the Argnat basin (French Massif Central) have been carried out to identify the carbon sources in the system. Mantellic sources are related to faults promoting CO uplift from the mantle to the saturated zone. The contribution of this source is counterbalanced by infiltration of water through the unsaturated zone, accompanied by dissolution of soil CO or even atmospheric CO during cold periods. Monitoring and modeling of δC in the unsaturated zone shows that both $$ {\text{P}}_{{{\text{CO}}_{ 2} {\text{eq}}}} $$ and δC are controlled by air temperature which influences soil respiration and soil-atmosphere CO exchanges. The internal geometry of volcanic lava flows controls water patterns from the unsaturated zone to saturated zone and thus may explain δC heterogeneity in the saturated zone at the basin scale.
