Reductions of carbon dioxide emissions from the building sector are mandatory for climate protection. This calls for both a reduction of the construction material and energy as well as a reduction of the operational energy. Against this background, a novel facade-integrated adsorption system for solar cooling of lightweight buildings is proposed and theoretically investigated in this work. For this purpose, a detailed simulation model is developed to analyze both the processes in the single components as well as the overall system behavior. The proposed system consists of the three components adsorber, condenser and evaporator, which are connected vacuum-tight and are coupled by vapor transfer. The simulation results of a defined reference case yield cooling rates of 54   W per installed square meter of adsorber facade. The cooling power can be maintained for 12 h, confirming the applicability of the proposed system. Furthermore, a comprehensive parametric study is carried out in order to identify an optimum set of parameter values for maximum cooling rate under the assumed conditions. The results reveal that controlled constant cooling rates of 105   W per square meter of adsorber facade can be reached and a maximum peak power of 145   W per square meter of adsorber facade is possible. The industrial sector is one of the biggest oil consumers in Cyprus, corresponding to 20% of the fuel consumption. A parabolic trough collector (PTC) system seems the best option to produce clean thermal energy at higher temperatures than those that can be achieved from the already widely used flat plate collectors on the island. This paper presents a simulation model built to investigate the performance of the first industrial PTC system in Cyprus, installed at the Cyprus biggest soft drinks factory. The simulation model is built in TRNSYS and is validated using data from the real PTC system installed at the factory. The results show a very good fitting between the operating parameters and the power output of the Solar Field (SF), Concrete Thermal Storage System (CTES), and the Steam Generator (SG). The average percentage relative error of the system's contribution to the process is less than 6.32% for the daily steam production and during a week did not exceed 6.45%. The novelty of this study is the development of a design tool that can be used by potential interested industries to identify the suitable system that fits their needs. All data are provided in the form of graphs and allow anyone to use as input data the thermal energy demand and required steam temperature of the industry to retrieve information about the size of a suitable system which satisfies these requirements depending on each case. Here, to step forward in this advance, this system is employed as a heat source for an alkali metal thermoelectric converter (AMTEC). Thermal energy storage (TES) is applied to stabilize the performance of the hybrid system along with solar irradiation fluctuations. The considered system is investigated on three different days for the humid subtropical climate of Bandar Abbas, Iran. This study's primary outcome and contribution is a novel simulation framework via TRNSYS to predict the performance of the system under fluctuations of solar irradiation at this site. Both TES and STP systems are defined in TRNSYS software as a new component type via utilizing the Fortran program. The effects of various parameters, including the total energy absorbed by the central receiver, the thermal capacity of TES, and the heliostats field area, are investigated on crucial output parameters of the AMTEC. The mass flow rate of the heat transfer fluid at several areas is then studied in different operating conditions. The optimum area for the heliostats (14,500 m 2), leading to the highest AMTEC efficiency (18%) is determined, which requests a TES tank volume of 28.13 m 3. Recently there have been many reports on the application of phase change materials (PCM) in solar water heating system (SWHS). However, there are some doubts and different views in this field, since the sensitivity of the system to the PCM design parameters and external conditions. In this study, a typical SWHS with a PCM storage tank is proposed to overcome the existing problems. The mathematical model is established and validated against experimental data. Annual simulations have been done under a typical user load and different PCM design parameters (phase change temperature, PCM usage amount) among six cities which have different meteorological conditions. The results indicate that the application of PCM in SWHS can reduce the power consumption of electric auxiliary heater (EAH) and the heat loss, but the benefits vary widely by regions and PCM design parameters. The highest power saving rate is up to 31% in Lhasa which has extremely abundant solar energy, while for the heat loss saving rate the highest value is 9.9% in Guangzhou which is located in the hot summer and warm winter zone. Besides, a parametric study has been conducted to explore the power saving potentials with different PCM design parameters in different regions, as well as to discuss the optimal phase change temperature and the PCM usage amount. A micro gas turbine (MGT) is a potential option for distributed energy systems driven by fuel and solar energy. The dynamic characteristics of a solar-hybrid microturbine system are essential to its control development and performance assessment. In this paper, a dynamic model is proposed, including an MGT (T100), a tubular air receiver and a sensible thermal energy storage system, which are experimentally validated well. Based on the developed model, the dynamic responses of a solar-hybrid microturbine system in stand-alone mode are studied considering load and Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI) changes. Results show that the fuel consumption is greatly reduced by integrating solar energy, which comes at the cost of system instability; if the investigated system experiences a significant load decrease, heliostats must be oriented away from the air receiver to ensure a stable operation, whereas the load must be increased incrementally to avoid a compressor surge in the case of a significant load increase. Compared to load change, DNI change will cause smaller overshoots of the MGT's rotational speed and surge margin. Intelligent design and operation optimization allow energy systems to take advantage of the flexibility that multi-generation provides. This study proposes a basic solar-driven system integrated with thermal energy storage for round-the-clock energy harvesting. A modified configuration is then designed incorporating innovative multi-heat recovery approaches to increase the capacity and product diversity of the basic system. The modified system is able to cover vital urban utilities such as electricity, fresh water, cooling, and hydrogen throughout the day. To overcome the time-consuming procedure of dynamic techno-economic simulation as well as the limitation of commercial engineering equation solvers for tri-objective optimization, a deep learning approach is developed to reduce the computational complexity and improve the analysis accuracy. In this regard, the trained neural networks play an intermediary role in coupling the developed code with the MATLAB optimization toolbox. A comparison between the modified and conventional configurations indicates that implementing the multi-heat recovery approach results in a 29% increase in power generation while only increasing the overall system cost by 1.97%. From an economic perspective, the Sankey diagram depicts that the storage unit with a cost rate of 12.25 $/h accounts for 6.77% of the plant's cost rate, which enables the system to operate continuously. Abstract Improving the flexibility of conventional power plants is one key challenge for the transformation of the energy system towards a high share of renewable energies in electricity generation. Flexible and dispatchable power plants will contribute to this ongoing transformation process as they compensate the fluctuating electricity generation from renewable energy sources such as wind and photovoltaics. In this context, dynamic simulation models offer an efficient tool to evaluate flexibility measures and the resulting highly transient power plant operation. In this paper, the buildup of a dynamic power plant model using the modeling language Modelica in the simulation environment Dymola is presented. The detailed dynamic power plant model is validated successfully against measurement data from the underlying coal-fired reference power plant. The paper then focuses on the integration of a steam accumulator – also known as a Ruths storage – into the power plant process in order to increase its flexibility. The results of the dynamic simulations show that charging the steam accumulator leads to a reduction of the net power up to 7.0%. By discharging the Ruths storage an additional net power of 4.3% can be activated very quickly. Thus, the storage integration leads to an improved load flexibility with regard to a temporary reduction of the minimum load as well as to the possibility of performing a load change at a constant firing rate (e.g. to participate on the quarter-hourly intraday markets). Abstract Thermal energy storage (TES) plays a crucial role improving the efficiency of solar power utilization. Molten salt (MS) has gained a strong position as a thermal fluid in applications where solar power is stored and used overnight to provide dispatchable energy production. Novel process and operating concepts are being developed for TES systems that require reliable engineering tools. System-wide dynamic simulation provides a virtual test bench and analysis tool for assisting in process and control design and operational issues. Proper characterization of the thermal fluids in simulation tools is critical for successful simulation studies. In this paper, we report the experimental and modelling work related to counter-current heat exchange and free drainage test runs in CIEMAT's multi-purpose MS test loop at Plataforma Solar de Almería in Spain. We present a general method to define MS and non-condensable gas within a homogeneous pressure-flow solver. We present modelling of an indirect MS TES system connected to a thermal oil loop through TEMA type heat exchangers, model calibration with half of the experimental data, and finally, validation simulations against rest of the data. All these experimental data are previously unpublished. The model predicts the system behaviour with good agreement regarding temperatures, pressures, flow rates and liquid levels. The simulations suggest that the heat exchangers' shell sides suffer from trapped non-condensable gas which significantly affects heat transfer, heat loss to ambient air and hydrodynamic losses. Our results contribute to thermal-hydraulic, system-wide modelling and simulation of MS processes. As renewable energies are incorporated in larger shares in the electricity grid and district heating and cooling networks, the integration of storage solutions becomes more important. Thermal Energy Storage is an effective way to store heat and utilize the synergies between different energy carriers. Stratified storage tanks are a promising technology because of their low cost, simplicity and reliability. However, the modeling of the thermocline region in a stratified tank remains a challenge. There is a need to develop a fast and accurate 1D model for simulations and optimizations of TES. In this paper, a new discretization scheme is applied to the vertical axis of the storage tank. Orthogonal Collocation accurately represents the temperature profiles inside the storage tank with less points than the traditional multinode model, therefore running faster. Oscillations appear in the temperature profiles computed with orthogonal collocation if the thermocline represented is too steep and a low number of discretization points is used. But if a realistic thermocline is used as initial condition, the model performs well. Thus, it is appropriate to represent the real behavior of a storage tank, where uniform temperature conditions are avoided. Orthogonal Collocation on Finite Elements runs even faster and represents a good perspective for optimization studies. The model developed in this paper is validated with real data from a solar thermal plant with storage. A continuous and smooth model is also developed for natural convection inside the storage tank. Due to their non-deterministic behaviour, renewable energies are defined as non-dispatchable energies and are largely coupled with energy storage systems to overcome the problem of matching energy production and demand. Hence, in the energy efficiency and conservation field there is growing interest towards energy storage systems, especially when combined with the demand side management (DSM) concept, representing DSM the possibility of shaping end user electricity consumption. In this work an existing installation of a thermal energy storage (TES) system coupled with heat pumps in an industrial building is presented and a dynamic simulation model is built to represent its behaviour. Simulations are performed to show the load shifting potential of such storage and costs and energy use are assessed for different configurations, in order to evaluate the viability of this TES application. In particular the demand side strategy considered is aimed at shifting energy demand for cooling to weekend daytime to recover surplus PV electricity or otherwise to off peak hours to profit from lower electricity tariffs. It is found that the use of TES implies increased energy demand, while costs can decrease when electricity tariffs with a considerable difference between on peak and off peak rates are applied. Furthermore the integration with renewable sources for electricity production, such as PV panels, makes the installation of TES economically interesting independently of the electricity tariff in place. The transition from fossil fuels to green renewable resources presents a key challenge: most renewables are intermittent and unpredictable in their nature. Energy storage has the potential to meet this challenge and enables large scale implementation of renewables. In this paper we investigated the dynamic performance of a specific Adiabatic Compressed Air Energy Storage (A-CAES) plant with packed bed thermal energy storage (TES). We developed for the first time a plant model that blends together algebraic and differential sub-models detailing the transient features of the thermal storage, the cavern, and the compression/expansion stages. The model allows us to link the performance of the components, in particular those of the thermal storage system, with the performance of the whole A-CAES plant. Our results indicate that an A-CAES efficiency in the range 60–70% is achievable when the TES system operates with a storage efficiency above 90%. Moreover, we show how the TES dynamic behaviour induces off-design conditions in the other components of the A-CAES plant. Such device-to-plant link of performance is crucial: only through integration of TES model in the whole A-CAES model is possible to assess the benefits and added value of thermal energy storage. The transient performance of solar thermal power plants is critical to the system design and optimization. This study numerically investigates the dynamic efficiencies of an open-loop air receiver and a thermal energy storage unit. One-dimensional dynamic models of the air receiver and thermal energy storage were developed using the Modelica language with a graphical user interface and the Dymola solver to provide comprehensive thermal simulation at low computational cost. An air receiver and thermal energy storage experimental platforms were built to validate the simulation models. The simulation results compare well with the experimental data, so the models can be used to predict the variations of air receiver and thermal energy storage efficiencies. The models were then combined into a receiver and thermal energy storage system model with control schemes. The schemes control the air receiver outlet air temperature at relatively stable values while the thermal energy storage automatically switches between charging, discharging and stand-by modes. This work presents a novel steam accumulator and concrete-block storage system (SACSS) to recover part of the energy lost through the steam cycle side during startups of combined cycle power plants (CCPPs). The steam accumulators are integrated with sensible-heat concrete storage to provide superheated steam resulting then to a higher efficiency and safer steam turbine operation compared with systems based only on saturated steam. An economic analysis is performed considering two different scenarios: i) a CCPP able to execute fast startups using a Benson-type heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and ii) a CCPP operated with conventional startups which employs a typical drum-type HRSG. It is worth mentioning that the second scenario is based on measured data. The economic optimization of the SACSS is carried out focusing in four design variables: number of steam accumulator units, storage pressure, concrete-block length and outer concrete diameter. The optimum solution presents a net present value of 4.45 M€ and a payback period of 3 years for the CCPP suitable for fast startups. For the CCPP operated with conventional startups, a net present value of 2.53 M€ and a payback period of 3.4 years are obtained. The net present value grows around 60 % in both cases if the benefits from carbon credits are considered. In addition to the efficiency improvement, the SACSS could be used to preheat critical sections of the heat recovery steam generators, reducing the thermal stress and the fatigue damage during fast startups. Finally, the emissions avoided thanks to SACSS are estimated to be around 3 640 and 2 175 tons of CO 2 per year, for fast and conventional startup cases, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The discontinuous nature of the solar energy forces to study the dynamic behavior of solar plants to characterize their operations, to deepen their process understanding and to improve the performance and maintenance. The present paper focuses on the dynamic simulation and control of concentrating solar plants with the aim to define a reasonably simplified layout as well as to highlight the main issues to characterize the process dynamics of these energy systems and their related energy storages. Detailed first-principles mathematical models of key unit operations are developed, implemented, and integrated into commercial codes to improve the reliability of the plant dynamic simulation as well as the prevision accuracy. Thermal energy storage system in concentrating solar power plants can guarantee sustainable and stable electricity output in case of highly unstable solar irradiation conditions. In this paper, the lumped parameter method is used to develop the models of different thermal energy storage systems. In order to improve the reliability as well as the prediction accuracy of developed models, the charging/discharging process is firstly simulated, and then the dynamic characteristics of thermal energy storage systems are fully tested by imposing 15% step disturbance of mass flow. The results show that the charging/discharging characteristics of the three different thermal energy storage systems are almost the same, which have little to do with the storage mediums used in the systems. Besides, for the representative 1MWe solar parabolic trough power plant, a 15% step up disturbance of oil mass flow will result in a small increase (1.8% and 1.3% respectively) on the outlet temperature of oil and molten salt. On the other side, a 15% step down disturbance of oil mass flow will lead a 2.7% and 2.2% decrease on the outlet temperature of oil and molten salt respectively. In order to verify the validity of the proposed models, the simulation results are compared with both the design points and representative experimental data from the 1MWe solar parabolic trough power plant. The results show that the maximum relative error is not more than 1% when comparing with the design points and the maximum relative error is not more than 12% when comparing with the representative experimental data. The addition of thermal energy storage and natural gas as a complementary energy source improves the flexibility, reliability, and value of concentrated solar power (CSP) plants. Nevertheless, due to the transient nature of solar energy, transitions from solar-only mode and natural-gas mode to hybrid solar-natural gas mode is quite challenging, especially when the plant is equipped with thermal storage. Thus, it is important to develop proper dynamic modeling and control schemes to accurately simulate such transitions. The objective of this study is to address this subject by demonstrating a dynamic model with reliable control schemes for a highly integrated hybrid parabolic trough-natural gas plant equipped with thermal energy storage. The specific goal is to study the dynamics of adding thermal storage to the hybrid plant. It is found that the developed control schemes assist smooth transitions between different operational modes and effective utilization of thermal storage and natural gas to maintain steady power production and steam mass flow rates under different solar conditions. The results demonstrate that the integration of storage regulates power production by solar energy and natural gas during the day time. It also enables an increase in the solar fraction of the hybrid plant while it causes a small decrease in thermodynamic efficiency. The analysis shows that the hybrid plant with the storage has a substantially lower specific CO 2 emission (0.320 tonne/MWh) than single natural gas plant (0.413 tonne/MWh) although it has a higher levelized cost of electricity ($86.32/MWh against $74.92/MWh). To overcome non-programmability issues that limit the market penetration of renewable energies, the use of thermal energy storage has become more and more significant in several applications where there is a need for decoupling between energy supply and demand. The aim of this paper is to present a multi-node physics-based model for the simulation of stratified thermal energy storage, which allows the required level of detail in temperature vertical distribution to be varied simply by choosing the number of nodes and their relative dimensions. Thanks to the chosen causality structure, this model can be implemented into a library of components for the dynamic simulation of smart energy systems. Hence, unlike most of the solutions proposed in the literature, thermal energy storage can be considered not only as a stand-alone component, but also as an important part of a more complex system. Moreover, the model behavior has been analyzed with reference to the experimental results from the literature. The results make it possible to conclude that the model is able to accurately predict the temperature distribution within a stratified storage tank typically used in a district heating network with limitations when dealing with small storage volumes and high flow rates. Strong convergence problems may arise during the dynamic simulation of the phase transitions of adsorption systems subjected to larger and/or random fluctuations of the boundary conditions, which do not follow the conventional cycle sequence (e.g., adsorptive thermal storage systems). This sequence could even be reversed at some instants and its stages not completed. Such convergence problems preclude solving those phase transitions, and thus the successful dynamic simulation of the adsorption systems. A set of numerical procedures for solving those problems is proposed, consisting of a small group of new conditions to be added to the conventional numerical algorithms. Its successful use is demonstrated in the dynamic simulation of a thermal energy storage system provided with an adsorption module, modeled in two distinct but coupled platforms (TRNSYS and MATLAB), for which the convergence difficulties are identified and described. Results indicate successful convergence by applying the proposed methodology, in contrast with the original algorithm, attesting for its capability to overcome the convergence problems that occur during the system's dynamic simulation. This set of numerical recipes can be adapted for other systems' algorithms, or to serve as a basis for its successful dynamic simulation, thus showing a promising and enlarged range of use.
