Vegetation and climate during the last ice age and the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, ∼23,000–19,000 cal BP) were considerably different than during the current interglacial (Holocene). Cold climatic conditions and growing ice-sheets during the last glaciation radically reduced forest extent in Europe to a restricted number of so-called “refugia”, mostly located in the southern part of the continent. On the basis of paleobotanical analyses the Euganian Hills (Colli Euganei) in northeastern Italy have previously been proposed as one of the northernmost refugia of temperate trees (e.g. deciduous Quercus, Tilia, Ulmus, Fraxinus excelsior, Acer, Abies alba, Fagus sylvatica, Carpinus and Castanea ) in Europe. In this study we provide the first quantitative, vegetation independent summer air temperature reconstruction for Northern Italy spanning the time ∼31,000–17,000 cal yr BP, which covers the coldest periods of the last glacial, including the LGM and Heinrich stadials 1 to 3. Chironomids preserved in a lake sediment core from Lago della Costa (7m a.s.l.), a small lake at the south-eastern edge of the Euganean Hills, allowed quantitative reconstruction of Full and Late Glacial summer air temperatures using a combined Swiss-Norwegian temperature inference model based on chironomid assemblages from 274 lakes. Chironomid and pollen evidence from Lago della Costa derives from finely stratified autochthonous organic gyttja sediments, which excludes major sediment mixing or reworking. After reconstructing paleo-temperatures, we address the question whether climate conditions were warm enough to permit the local survival of temperate tree species during the LGM and whether local expansions and pollen-inferred contractions of temperate tree taxa coincided with chironomid-inferred climatic changes. Our results suggest that chironomids at Lago della Costa have responded to major climatic fluctuations such as temperature decreases during the LGM and Heinrich stadials. The vegetation of the Euganean Hills shows responses to these climatic oscillations although the effects of temperature changes were probably also strongly influenced by changes in humidity. Reconstructed July air temperatures at Lago della Costa never fell below 10–13 °C (error range of reconstruction ∼ ±1.5–1.6 °C), which is considerably above the limit considered necessary for forest growth (8–10 °C). Instead rather mild climatic conditions prevailed ∼31,000–17,000 cal yr BP with average summer temperatures between ∼12 and 16 °C, which most likely allowed survival of temperate tree taxa in the warmest (and moistest) microhabitats of the Euganean Hills during the LGM. Only assuming local survival is it possible to explain the repeated expansions and collapses of temperate trees at Lago della Costa which faithfully accompanied the climatic oscillations. Abstract: Four new 20-m cores drilled (2000–2001) in the historical city centre of Venice, provided new data on Late Pleistocene and Holocene deposits from pollen biostratigraphy, foraminiferal associations and 10 new 14C dates. About 22,000 years ago, alluvial deposits were laid down in an environment characterized by intense flooding with episodes of swamp conditions between 22,410±130 and 20,830±130 years BP. This full glacial phase was followed by one of prevailing fine materials between 19,790±120 and 19,280±120 years BP. The Flandrian marine invasion occurred 5520±50 years BP, and gave rise to a layer about 5m thick, in which the foraminiferal associations show ancient channels and buried salt marshes. Palynological analysis indicates two different pollen zones: one is full glacial, with two phases of climatic warming going back to the Tursac and Laugerie interstages; the second corresponds to Holocene lagoonal deposits. The main peat layers represent episodes of stagnation in stadial conditions. The two warm interstages lasted a few centuries. Above the Laugerie interstage, peaty remains in continental sands underlying the Holocene lagoonal deposits of Atlantic age date back to 9173±80–7165±60 years BP, showing the presence of the Early Holocene. The morphometry of 432 glacial cirques in the Maritime Alps (Western French-Italian Alps), studied over several years of fieldwork, was analysed with the use of a geographical information system. Some of the parameters automatically evaluated from digital elevation models required an objective and relatively new definition. In particular, cirque length was measured along a line that, from the threshold midpoint, splits the cirque into two equivalent surfaces; cirque width was automatically drawn as the longest line inscribed in the cirque and perpendicular to the length line. Significant correlations were found among the different factors and parameters analysed. In particular, cirque shape analysis showed that cirques develop allometrically in the three dimensions, i.e. more in length and width than in altitudinal range. Nevertheless cirques of the Maritime Alps have a regular, almost circular shape (meanL/Wvalue= 1.07). The correlations among length, width and area are all very high (r2= 0.8–0.9). In terms of size, cirques show a wide range in area from 0.06 to 5.2 km2 with a mean value of 0.4 km2. The largest cirques are found on SSW-facing slopes and at high elevations. Small cirques can be found at all altitudes but all those at high elevation are part of compound cirques at the main head valleys.
