The article considers the place and role of the pulp and paper industry as a key branch of the domestic timber industry complex in the economic and spatial development of modern Russia. It is shown that the sector requires liberalization and stabilization, primarily through moratoriums on policy changes. The need and some existing possibilities for the analysis of non-traditional data sources to obtain a more complete and relevant data of the spatial development of industries is emphasized, from the point of narrow-branch economic and geographical research. Big data and, in particular, a text-mining system that includes millions of open text documents was chosen as a non-traditional source for economic and geographical research. Based on text mining, a semantic and trend map was built, and a list of the most significant and dynamically developing terms (topics) was determined. The topics-drivers were multiplied: on the basis of the word2vec model, complex search conditions were formed, which provide a complete and objective coverage of the analyzed area. Using these search terms, a matrix of operating pulp and paper enterprises in European Russia from sectoral text data sources for 2011–2020 was constructed. Based on a combination of matrix analysis and analysis of a map of operating pulp and paper enterprises, typological groups (belts) of enterprises in European Russia were identified, with the characteristics of size, geographic location, development potential, competitiveness, and risks that are different for each group. All four belts have a clear latitude–longitudinal (diagonal) trend from southwest to northeast. The role of application of big data analysis and, in particular, text mining in economic and geographical research for reasonable and objective conclusions is emphasized. Abstract: This article introduces a bottom-up global model of the pulp and paper sector (PULPSIM) with a focus on energy consumption and carbon emissions. It is an annual recursive simulation behavioural model with a 2030 time horizon incorporating several technological details of the industry for 47 world regions. The long time horizon and the modular structure allow the model users to assess the effects of different environmental, energy and climate policies in a scenario comparison setup. In addition to the business as usual developments of the sector, a climate commitment scenario has been analysed, in which the impacts of changing forest management practices are also included. The climate scenario results reveal that there is a significant carbon reduction potential in the pulp and paper making, showing a number of specific features: the central role of the fibrous resource inputs and the potential impact of increased waste wood and black liquor based heat generation. Pinus taeda is a principal conifer tree species and has long been used in forest plantations in Southern Brazil. At the same time, experiments have been carried out in order to determine the wood productivity concerning the economic, social and sustainable forest management practices. In that sense, the organic fertilizers, such as the biosolid residues from pulp and paper industries, are one of the alternatives to achieve this sustainability. Nevertheless, few studies addressing this objective have been reported in Brazil. This study aimed to analyze the growth responses of loblolly pine trees treated with different doses of composted pulp-mill sludge and to propose a management guide based on a wood production simulation. A randomized block design with four replicates for every six treatments - control, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 t ha −1 of composted pulp-mill sludge - were carried out in an experimental plantation located in Arapoti, Paraná state, Brazil. Ten 17 year-old-trees for each treatment were selected, the stem variables were analyzed and the stand wood productivity for the optimal dosage was simulated. The trees were significantly influenced by the application of the composted pulp-mill sludge, increasing up to 24, 37 and 127% in stem diameter, height and volume, respectively, and the rotation of the pine plantation control and treated stands was 33 and 21 years, respectively. The forest management applied for a 21-year harvesting cycle (thinning at 7 and 13 years) with 84 t ha −1 of composted pulp-mill sludge resulted in a wood productivity of 11.9 m 3 ha −1 or 5.04 Mg ha −1 per year. The results confirm the potential application of pulp-mill sludge as a fertilizer to improve the wood productivity of forest plantations established in poor-nutrient sites. Wood pulp is one of the main products of forestry worldwide, being a necessary intermediate product for all types of paper produced. In order to understand the market dynamics of this product, this study analyses the global concentration of the wood-pulp production from 1961 to 2021 using data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). To measure the degree of concentration, the following indicators were used: concentration ratio [CR(fc)], the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), the Theil Entropy Index (E), the Hall and Tideman Index (HTI), the Comprehensible Concentration Index (CCI) and the Gini Coefficient (G). A decreasing tendency in the concentration of the world production of wood pulp was verified, but the concentration is still classified as intense. The inequality was also strongly verified by the G, but also with a downward tendency. The participation of major producers is also decreasing. This trend of reduced concentration is explained by the increase in the number of countries producing wood pulp. This study concluded that the environmental and technological conditions of the management of planted forests restrict the participation of many of the countries producing wood pulp. Abstract: Maintaining biodiversity is a key goal of global forest policy which promotes ecosystem health and resilience in the face of changing land use and climate. Sustainable management of forest ecosystems is essential to the social and economic services that forests provide, is an important component of the environmental policies of national governments, and is a specific focus of the Conventional on Biological Diversity. Sustainable forest management supports the maintenance and enhancement of biodiversity, and relies on evidence based research to underpin associated policies and practices. Studies that take a focussed approach are particularly helpful in this regard where they identify mechanisms of ecological change in forest habitats, and predictors appropriate to determining the impact of management practices. Observational research can suggest likely mechanisms for ecological change, which can be tested and confirmed through experimental research. Predictors based on long-term research, on the mechanisms underlying ecological relationships, or on modelling approaches can be used to infer information about existing forests and to forecast future trends. This special issue presents a selection of papers which were first presented at the second international IUFRO conference on biodiversity in forest ecosystems and landscapes at University College Cork, Ireland in August 2012. The aim of this conference series is to ‘share knowledge, discuss new trends, reflect on future directions in biodiversity management for sustainable forestry, and provide a stronger scientific basis for biodiversity management in forest landscapes in the light of climate change’. The selected papers exemplify the use of observational and experimental approaches to identify mechanisms of ecological change in forests, and the use of indicators to predict current and future patterns of biodiversity. Trends in forest biodiversity were examined and discussed, drawing on what we know about forests to reconstruct ancient forested landscapes and to identify strategies for the management of forests into the future. Whilst forest management certification emerged in the early 1990s as a potential market-based solution to the problem of forest loss and degradation, certified timber has not yet taken a significant share of timber and wood product markets. Although the lack of supply of certified timber is acknowledged as a problem, market barriers to the uptake of certified products are poorly understood. This study sought to identify and compare barriers to the uptake of certified wood and wood products in the UK's paper and construction industries. Findings indicate marked variation in barriers between individual companies and between the industries. Key barriers identified include: organizational constraints – strategic commitment, inadequate systems, staff skills and financial provision; supply constraints – material availability, supply chain complexities, entrenched supplier relationships; and demand constraints – lack of knowledge, weak demand, price sensitivity, traditional expectations and availability of substitutes. The article discusses the Model Forest approach for sustainable development of landscape. It cites examples of involvement of indigenous peoples in Model Forest activities including sustainable forest management in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and Vilhelmina locality of Sweden, creation of protected area on municipal lands in Bolivia, and sustainable forest management in Cameroon. It also describes the Adriatic Model Forest project which aims to create a Model Forest in Dalmatia, Croatia.

Although native to Australia, Eucalyptus species are found throughout Europe. At present, they are located mainly in the Iberian Peninsula and Eucalyptus globulus is the most commonly planted species. Climate forecasts anticipate an expansion of Eucalyptus to other regions of Europe. The fast growth of E. globulus, together with its resprouting ability and wood properties, has promoted the use of this species in the Iberian Peninsula. The total volume of E. globulus harvested there was close to 14 million m3 in 2019. Eucalyptus species represent the main source of raw material for the pulp and paper industries and provide an important source of income to non-industrial owners. Being exotic fast-growing trees, their expansion has also been associated with negative environmental impacts. The species therefore poses a series of challenges, while also generating opportunities. The objectives of this review paper are: (1) to summarize the importance of Eucalyptus plantations in Europe; (2) to analyse the opportunities and challenges of this genus in present and future plantations in Europe; (3) to assess to what extent forest management, at both stand and landscape levels, can reduce negative impacts; (4) to make policy and management recommendations that may support the use of this genus in other European regions. Abstract: In Australia, a pervasive response to increasing atmospheric greenhouse gasses and the exchange of these gasses between the atmosphere and forests has been to focus on storing carbon (C) in forested landscapes. However, the amount of C stored and able to be stored in the landscape, which is often called carbon carrying capacity, is commonly over-estimated and over-emphasised. This occurs, in part, due to a focus on the continent’s most C-rich forests when discussing landscape C storage or carbon carrying capacity, and by failing to account for wildfires that will prevent all forests from becoming old and C-rich. These effects on forest age-class structure and thus C-stocks, in the Australian landscape currently tend to be overlooked at the policy level. Underemphasised is the widely recognised role of wood products in greenhouse gas mitigation, both as a C-stock and by providing society with low emission products. Improving atmospheric outcomes will only be achieved if variation in landscape C stocks is accurately described and the full role of forests in greenhouse gas mitigation including the role of wood products is explored and reflected in policy. In recent decades, climatic pressures have altered the forested landscape of Bavaria. Widespread loss of trees has unevenly impacted the entire state, of which 37% is covered by forests (5% more than the national average). In 2018 and 2019—due in large part to drought and subsequent insect infestations—more tree-covered areas were lost in Bavaria than in any other German state. Moreover, the annual crown condition survey of Bavaria has revealed a decreasing trend in tree vitality since 1998. We conducted a systematic literature review regarding the remote sensing of forests in Bavaria. In total, 146 scientific articles were published between 2008 and 2023. While 88 studies took place in the Bavarian Forest National Park, only five publications covered the whole of Bavaria. Outside of the national park, the remaining 2.5 million hectares of forest in Bavaria are understudied. The most commonly studied topics were related to bark beetle infestations (24 papers); however, few papers focused on the drivers of infestations. The majority of studies utilized airborne data, while publications utilizing spaceborne data focused on multispectral; other data types were under-utilized- particularly thermal, lidar, and hyperspectral. We recommend future studies to both spatially broaden investigations to the state or national scale and to increase temporal data acquisitions together with contemporaneous in situ data. Especially in understudied topics regarding forest response to climate, catastrophic disturbances, regrowth and species composition, phenological timing, and in the sector of forest management. The utilization of remote sensing data in the forestry sector and the uptake of scientific results among stakeholders remains a challenge compared to other heavily forested European countries. An integral part of the Bavarian economy and the tourism sector, forests are also vital for climate regulation via atmospheric carbon reduction and land surface cooling. Although stakeholders' participation in forest management helps overcome problems and conflicts that prevent sustainable solutions, different approaches and nomenclature for similar contents in the literature hinder theoretical progress on the topic. This study organises existing information through a bibliometric analysis of scientific papers from the last 30 years (1991–2021) on sustainable forest management, focusing on the stakeholders' participation. Results demonstrate that stakeholders' participation in sustainable forest management gained relevance from 2017 onwards. Case studies are predominant (66%) and six major trends were identified. The first emphasises a systemic approach to participation. The second updates the community management discussion. The third studies historical problems related to the use of resources, rights, and services. The fourth focuses on regional assessments and studies. The fifth concerns assessment, decision-making, and planning, including issues related to certifications and policies. The sixth discusses innovation related to adaptation, climate change, equity, and resilience. The studies included in this last classification are problem-solving-oriented and seek new forest management. Although important, the role of innovation in stakeholders' participation in sustainable forest management is overlooked, which constitutes an avenue for future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Trampling of vegetation and soils by recreational activities is a recurrent concern in many lands where trail use is common. The degree of impact can vary with the myriad types of trail users. The Weaver and Dale article, ''Trampling effects of hikers, motorcycles and horses in meadows and forests'', was the first to provide some insights about how different trampling agents might produce varied impacts. Weaver and Dale showed that horses and motorcycles produced greater impacts to soils and vegetation than hikers. This article appeared early in a relatively young field of study. The direct results of their research are still valuable today, but the greater impact of their paper was that it ushered in a phase of experimental trampling research that is ongoing. Because of their research and continual influence, land managers can now make better decisions about what type of recreation activity to discourage or encourage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Topics discussed include conflict between the paper and pulp industry Resolute Forest Products and non- government environmental organization Greenpeace International, rights of first nation over the resources of forest and the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement (CBFA) to continue negotiations on the forest issue such as sustainable forest management programs.

Indonesia's internationally- and domestically-significant pulp and paper industries source their feedstock from tree plantations. A suite of regulatory (Indonesian Sustainable Production Forest Management Certification and Timber Legality Verification) and market instruments (forest certification) have been introduced to promote sustainability and legality of production from tree plantations, and some producers have also adopted other voluntary sustainability measures. This study investigates sustainability and legality compliance by actors in an Indonesian pulp and paper value chain as a case study of environmental innovation. Results are based on primary fieldwork along segments of the value chain, and analysis of audit reports and other publicly-available information. The value chain sources fibrewood from tree plantation concessions and pallet wood from a variety of suppliers. Audit reports suggest high levels of compliance with sustainability and legality requirements, but our research suggests that these reports might not reflect some area of poor performance and non-compliance. We identify weaknesses in the design of regulatory systems, and in auditing and monitoring processes, as the principal reasons for these deficiencies. Drawing on relevant theory and on practice elsewhere, we suggest that compliance and sustainability can be improved by addressing key areas of regulatory silence, by shifting auditing to be more performance-than paper-based, by strengthening independent monitoring from civil society, by increasing the frequency of witness auditing from the National Accreditation Board, and by fostering synergies between regulatory instruments and voluntary forest certification. These changes would improve the effectiveness of regulatory and voluntary instruments to promote cleaner production in Indonesian pulp and paper value chains. This study was motivated by the proliferation of forest management businesses for industrial interests. The issuance of the Industrial Plantation Forest policy has benefited pulp and paper corporations, which can be observed from both the rapidly increasing amount of production and the area used under corporate land management, which has even exceeded the amount of land used as regulated by existing regulations.There were three problems that this study seeks to address. Firstly, how had the Industrial Plantation Forest policies during the administrations of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Joko Widodo impacted P.T. Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper and local communities. Secondly, in what ways the policy had caused deforestation, especially on peatlands. Thirdly, how had the state, as the policy maker, maintained the social life of the communities to reduce conflicts that would disrupt production, particularly in Riau. This study show that the industrial plantation forest policies had benefited pulp and paper corporations, that rely on wood as raw materials, by providing various facilities and subsidies from the government. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's administration issued a lot more policies that benefited corporations than Joko Widodo's administration. Meanwhile, Joko Widodo in its first period administration attempted to make amendment by making a moratorium policy that temporarily suspended the issuance of new forest and land management permits. In addition, the Joko Widodo administration also introduced a social forestry policy that allowed communities to own forestry management land. However, during the second period of his administration, forestry policies, again, had benefited corporations, especially with the issuance of the Job Creation Law which gave rise to many protests from the public.Fred Block’s in his book “the Revising State theory” to the conclusion that the business community has a strong influence on the formation of state policy and that business people seek government’s assistance to support their profit-seeking activities through various policies. The policies are in the form of trade protection, subsidy programs, tax benefits, punitive treatment of strikers, contracts from the government, and so on. However, Block also believes that other than providing support to corporations to accumulate capital, the government must also maintain social stability both as a protection for business confidence and because the government wants to maintain its power. This study analyzed 302 top papers in the subject category of Forestry from 2010 to 2020, which include 300 highly cited papers and 3 hot papers. All papers were written in English, belonging to 1,567 authors, 694 organizations and 74 countries/territories, published in 35 journals and book series. The top five Journals were Agricultural and Forest Meteorology, Forest Ecology and Management, Forests, Tree Physiology and Forest Policy and Economics. Top five countries and regions were USA, Germany, Canada, France and Peoples R China. Top five organizations were US Forest Serv, Chinese Acad Sci, INRA, Swedish Univ Agr Sci and Univ Freiburg. Among the all authors, Bauhus, Juergen from Univ Freiburg of Germany provided the highest number in 6 papers. All keywords were separated into seven clusters for different research topics. A survey of research papers which were published in journals of 1978 and which deal with problems that are of interest from the forest pathological point of view is presented. The fragmentary nature of the material results from the fact that a large part of the annual information is published in irregular series and collections. A number of papers dealing with the general problems of forest protection also touch upon problems of forest pathology. A research paper considers questions of forest seed management protection.

The National Forestland "One Map" applies the boundaries and attributes of sub-elements to mountain plots by means of spatial data to achieve digital management of forest resources. The change detection and analysis of forest space and property is the key to determining the change characteristics, evolution trend and management effectiveness of forest land. The existing spatial overlay method, rasterization method, object matching method, etc., cannot meet the requirements of high efficiency and high precision at the same time. In this paper, we investigate a fast algorithm for the detection of changes in "One Map", taking Sichuan Province as an example. The key spatial characteristic extraction method is used to uniquely determine the sub-compartments. We construct an unbalanced quadtree based on the number of maximum leaf node elements (NLNE Quad-Tree) to narrow down the query range of the target sub-compartments and quickly locate the sub-compartments. Based on NLNE Quad-Tree, we establish a change detection model for "One Map" (NQT-FCDM). The results show that the spatial feature combination of barycentric coordinates and area can ensure the spatial uniqueness of 44.45 million sub-compartments in Sichuan Province with 1 m~0.000001 m precision. The NQT-FCDM constructed with 1000–6000 as the maximum number of leaf nodes has the best retrieval efficiency in the range of 100,000–500,000 sub-compartments. The NQT-FCDM shortens the time by about 75% compared with the traditional spatial union analysis method, shortens the time by about 50% compared with the normal quadtree and effectively solves the problem of generating a large amount of intermediate data in the spatial union analysis method. The NQT-FCDM proposed in this paper improves the efficiency of change detection in "One Map" and can be generalized to other industries applying geographic information systems to carry out change detection, providing a basis for the detection of changes in vector spatial data. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and carbon stock changes projected over 100 years were quantified for a company managing 2.2 Mha of forest in northeast North America. From 2010 to 2015, company forest operations, sawmills, and pulp/paper mills were forecast to contribute 21, 4, and 75%, respectively, of total emissions. Forest and products were forecast to result in an increasing cumulative net GHG (sequestration minus emissions) sink to 30.7 t (O22e ha-1 at year 50, but as harvest levels increased, emissions exceeded sequestration by year 85, reaching a GHG source of 6:4 t CO2e ha-1 by year 100. After 100 years, the ratio of forest product storage to all emission pools was 0.58, 0.84 if grid electricity was hydrogenerated, or 2.7 if pulpwood was redirected for bioenergy. Determining the GHG mitigation potential of forest products requires inclusion of wood, paper, bioenergy, and manufacturing emissions and consideration of natural disturbances, leakage, and avoided emissions. The geomorphology of a vast terrain can be analyzed based on data from forest management plans as they characterize the field's part occupied by forests. In addition, these plans are extremely detailed for small surfaces of only some hectares. Based on these facts, the present article has studied Dobrogea's Plateau geomorphology by taking into account a large number of data from the forest management plans of all national forests situated in this area. These data focused on the relief, field configuration, exposition, slope and altitude. As such, the field's configuration is almost equally undulated and plane with no clear distinctions based on the exposition while the average altitude is of 125 m. Slopes under 20 0 represent 40% of the studied territory in Ciucurova (13 447 ha), Babadag (12 8873 ha), Cerna (11 265 ha), Forest Districts, while slopes >40 0 are found in Macin (261,6 ha) and Cerna (10,9 ha) Forest Districts. The presents the views of the authors on the statements made by Ben Bradshaw concerning the definitions of success and contingencies which affect success in community forestry. The authors agree with Bradshaw on the implication that community forestry must be deemed a success where jobs and revenues were created, even if in some tendencies some objectives were not achieved. They point out that Bradshaw's reference to the work of Adcharaporn Pagdee who conducted a meta-analysis of 69 community forestry around the world, indicates that the relation of expertise, experience and leadership to success in community forest, remains undersearched. The role of experience, leadership and expertise is undertheorized and requires more research.
