Atmospheric rivers (ARs) significantly impact the hydrological cycle and associated extremes in western continental regions. Recent studies suggest ARs also influence water resources and extremes in continental interiors. AR detection tools indicate that AR conditions are relatively frequent in areas east of the Rocky Mountains. The origin of these ARs, whether from synoptic‐scale waves or mesoscale processes, is unclear. This study uses meteorological composite maps and transects of AR conditions during the four seasons. The analysis reveals that ARs east of the Rockies are associated with long‐wave, baroclinic Rossby waves. This result demonstrates that eastern North American ARs are dynamically similar to their western coastal counterparts, though mechanisms for vertical moisture flux differ between the two. These findings provide a foundation for understanding future climate change and ARs in this region and offer new methods for evaluating climate model simulations. The sensitivity of atmospheric river (AR)‐induced precipitation to climate change is primarily driven by increases in atmospheric water vapor with warming. However, the rate at which AR‐based precipitation intensifies with warming and whether this rate differs from non‐AR events remains uncertain. This work uses multiple statistical models to estimate regional, extreme precipitation‐temperature scaling rates in California for AR and non‐AR events. Scaling rates are determined using cold‐season daily and hourly precipitation, along with multiple temperature variables to assess robustness of the results. We find that regional scaling rates for ARs are consistently larger than non‐ARs, especially for hourly event maxima (posterior median scale rates of 5.7% and 2.4% per °C for ARs and non‐ARs, respectively). ARs remain near saturated (i.e., high relative humidity) and exhibit more lift and a stronger increase in specific humidity aloft with warming as compared to non‐ARs, helping to explain the difference in precipitation‐temperature scaling rates. This difference is linked to the fact that atmospheric rivers exhibit a more direct increase in moisture content and lift with warming. These results suggest that extreme precipitation during atmospheric rivers will increase faster than other events as temperatures rise in the future, which could accelerate damage linked to future flooding events. Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are long, narrow synoptic scale weather features important for Earth's hydrological cycle typically transporting water vapor poleward, delivering precipitation important for local climates. Understanding ARs in a warming climate is problematic because the AR response to climate change is tied to how the feature is defined. The Atmospheric River Tracking Method Intercomparison Project (ARTMIP) provides insights into this problem by comparing 16 atmospheric river detection tools (ARDTs) to a common data set consisting of high resolution climate change simulations from a global atmospheric general circulation model. ARDTs mostly show increases in frequency and intensity, but the scale of the response is largely dependent on algorithmic criteria. Across ARDTs, bulk characteristics suggest intensity and spatial footprint are inversely correlated, and most focus regions experience increases in precipitation volume coming from extreme ARs. The spread of the AR precipitation response under climate change is large and dependent on ARDT selection. Most water vapour in various subtropical regions is transported by atmospheric rivers (ARs). It is crucial to study this phenomenon, especially in regions more vulnerable to climate change due to population growth and aridity. The study's primary purpose was to detect ARs in the Middle East. According to expectations, ARs were classified based on strength and temporal–spatial distribution and their changes were examined to characterize the risks of the phenomenon. The results showed that ARs had significantly increased over the past 50 years (1971–2020). The most positive increase was related to weak ARs (Cat 1) in the last two decades and exceptional events (Cat 5) in the last decade. The results also indicated the role of terrain in limiting the path of the AR axis and multiple sources of moisture in their strongest form. The occurrence of hazardous events (Cat 4 and 5) was estimated at up to 22% of all ARs in the Middle East, with the highest frequency in the last three decades. It was also found that events with a maximum IVT of >1,000 kg·m−1·s−1 occurred 10 times during the last half of the last century. Also, an AR with a maximum IVT of 1,102 kg·m−1·s−1 occurred once in the region. The temporal distribution of these extreme events showed that they could occur at any time, depending on the conditions of AR formation. However, extreme events mainly occurred in March. Aquatic species show different sensitivities and responses to chronic thermal stress, resulting in varying degrees of resistance to the negative impacts of climate change, which are ultimately expressed as range expansions or contractions. The choice of species appropriate for assessing climate change impacts in aquatic ecosystems should be guided by the robustness of the relationship between a chosen chronic stress thermal threshold and associated habitat contraction. Twelve aquatic species were evaluated as potential climate change indicators, from which six were selected for testing a conceptual framework for predicting the degree of utility of a species as a climate change indicator. Results indicate that species with a chronic biological thermal threshold below 20°C are likely to experience in excess of 50% loss of thermally suitable environment. Cooler thermal thresholds could inform the choice of suitable sentinel species for use as early indicators of chronic thermal stress, while thresholds above this reflect increasingly thermally resistant species within aquatic communities. Objective: To explore young people's (YP) experiences of catastrophic flooding in the Northern Rivers area of northern NSW in 2017 and its effect on their mental health. Design: Content analysis of free‐text survey responses (written responses to open questions, rather than selecting a response option). Setting: Northern Rivers NSW. Participants: YP aged 16–25 years who were Northern Rivers residents at the time of the 2017 flood. Results: YP found their flood experience to be novel and challenging. They expressed worry, distress, anxiety, and worsened pre‐existing mental health issues as a result of the flood. YP reported a number of primary stressors (inadequate preparedness, warning and support during the flood) and secondary stressors (loss/damage of property and possessions, financial strain and disruptions to daily life) which potentially contributed to poor mental health. Some YP reported positive outcomes from their flood experience, notably increased community connectedness and personal resilience. However, they also expressed concern for the future, particularly potential reoccurrence of extreme floods as well as climate change. YP conveyed a desire for better community involvement to improve preparedness for future floods and a clear motivation to take action on climate change. Conclusion: The flood was a challenging experience for YP which was commonly described as negatively affecting their mental health. Understanding what YP view as significant events or issues arising from their personal flood experience may help target support mechanisms and services to maintain their mental. Rising water temperatures in rivers due to climate change are already having observable impacts on river ecosystems. Warming water has both direct and indirect impacts on aquatic life, and further aggravates pervasive issues such as eutrophication, pollution, and the spread of disease. Animals can survive higher temperatures through physiological and/or genetic acclimation, behavioral and phenological change, and range shifts to more suitable locations. As such, those animals that are adapted to cool‐water regions typically found in high altitudes and latitudes where there are fewer dispersal opportunities are most at risk of future extinction. However, sub‐lethal impacts on animal physiology and phenology, body‐size, and trophic interactions could have significant population‐level effects elsewhere. Rivers are vulnerable to warming because historic management has typically left them exposed to solar radiation through the removal of riparian shade, and hydrologically disconnected longitudinally, laterally, and vertically. The resilience of riverine ecosystems is also limited by anthropogenic simplification of habitats, with implications for the dispersal and resource use of resident organisms. Due to the complex indirect impacts of warming on ecosystems, and the species‐specific physiological and behavioral response of organisms to warming, predicting how river ecosystems will change in the future is challenging. Innumerable small steppe rivers have been degraded and lost through the construction of dikes and dams, as well as changing regional hydrology. A failed restoration project involving mechanical clearance of the channel of the small river Chaplynka is investigated. Field and laboratory studies included sampling and analysis of water and silt deposits. Muller's Іgeo class, categorising the technogenic load on the water ecosystem, and a bottom accumulation coefficient illustrate the degradation of the catchment and the absence of hydraulic connection along the erstwhile river channel. The river flow has not returned. The most obvious shortcoming of the riverbed clearing operations was the dumping of the dredged material on the riverbank, from where it was washed back into the channel. Moreover, excavation of the channel drained shallow aquifers that are no longer replenished by depleted precipitation and infiltration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In summer, salmonids can experience thermal stress during extreme weather conditions. This may affect their growth and even threaten their survival. Cool water zones in rivers constitute thermal refuges, allowing fish to be more comfortable to grow and survive in extreme events. Therefore, identifying and understanding the spatiotemporal variability of discrete thermal refuges and larger scale cooling zones in rivers is of fundamental interest. This study analyzes thermal refuges as well as cooling zones in two salmonid rivers in a subarctic climate by use of thermal infrared (TIR) imagery. The two studied rivers are the Koroc and Berard Rivers, in Nunavik, Quebec, Canada. On the 17 km studied section of the Berard River, four thermal refuges and five cooling zones were detected, covering 46% of the surveyed section of the river. On the 41 km section studied for the Koroc River, 67 thermal refuges and five cooling zones were identified which represent 32% of the studied section of the river. 89% of identified thermal refuges and about 60% of cooling zones are groundwater-controlled. Continuity of permafrost and shape of the river valley were found to be the main parameters controlling the distribution of refuges and cooling zones. Increasing anthropogenic influence and climate change are leading to significant transformations in living conditions for indigenous representatives of aquatic communities. The problem of alien species invasions is actively discussed in the example of large rivers and water reservoirs, but medium and small rivers with weak anthropogenic influence have been insufficiently studied in this aspect. With the help of analysis of literary data and the results of our own long-term observations of phytoplankton using morphological and molecular genetic methods in some left-bank Volga tributaries, we identified six invasive species of different taxonomic groups of algae, with a predominance of diatoms. The relevance of using both traditional and modern approaches to identifying invasive algae species is revealed. Such invasive species as Thalassiosira incerta, T. faurii, Skeletonema subsalsum, Unruhdinium kevei, and Gonyostomum semen were part of planktonic communities; the benthic species Plagiotropis lepidoptera var. proboscidea sometimes reached a significant level of development (up 6 to 44% from total biomass) in plankton. It was demonstrated that some algae species have firmly taken the position of dominants and subdominants in planktonic algae communities. The expansion of alien representatives of microphytobenthos was noted in the Volga River basin for the first time. For Gonyostomum semen, its European origin was revealed, for plankton and benthic diatom—Ponto-Caspian. Our study showed that the processes of invasion and subsequent development of alien species take place in habitats with weak anthropogenic influence, which is likely determined by the hydrological, hydrochemical, and climatic changes in river basins and the high adaptive capabilities of invasive species. Climate change affects cryosphere-fed rivers and alters seasonal sediment dynamics, affecting cyclical fluvial material supply and year-round water-food-energy provisions to downstream communities. Here, we demonstrate seasonal sediment-transport regime shifts from the 1960s to 2000s in four cryosphere-fed rivers characterized by glacial, nival, pluvial, and mixed regimes, respectively. Spring sees a shift toward pluvial-dominated sediment transport due to less snowmelt and more erosive rainfall. Summer is characterized by intensified glacier meltwater pulses and pluvial events that exceptionally increase sediment fluxes. Our study highlights that the increases in hydroclimatic extremes and cryosphere degradation lead to amplified variability in fluvial fluxes and higher summer sediment peaks, which can threaten downstream river infrastructure safety and ecosystems and worsen glacial/pluvial floods. We further offer a monthly-scale sediment-availability-transport model that can reproduce such regime shifts and thus help facilitate sustainable reservoir operation and river management in wider cryospheric regions under future climate and hydrological change. The article provides an overview of publications devoted to assessing changes in the water regime of Russian rivers under the conditions of current and projected climate changes. The most recent summary of the relevant publications is contained in the national assessment reports of Roshydromet. Since the publication of these fundamental works, a large number of studies have been published, clarifying the conclusions of the national reports. The purpose of this review is to summarize the modern ideas about the impact of climate change on the territory of the Russian Federation on the mean annual and maximum river flow, primarily based on the publications in recent years. The review is divided into two parts. The first part presents the results of the diagnosis of changes in the long-term norms of the annual and maximum flow of Russian rivers that occurred during the period of instrumental observations in the XX–early XXI centuries. Due to the geographical differences in the direction and magnitude of climate changes and associated changes in the water regime of rivers, the review is given separately for the rivers of the European and Asian territories of Russia. It is shown that the annual runoff over the territory of European Russia in recent decades has a tendency to increase, associated with a general rise in the humidity of the territory. However, for most of the analyzed river basins, the changes are statistically insignificant. The annual runoff of rivers from the territory of Siberia and the Far East into the Arctic seas of Russia has also slightly increased on average. The changes in the maximum runoff are more pronounced and differently directed. The second part of the article provides an overview of publications that present projections of changes in the water regime of Russian rivers until the end of the XXI century. The projections were obtained in ensemble experiments with climate models or with regional hydrological models. The conclusions made in the Second Assessment Report of Roshydromet regarding the insignificant positive anomalies of the annual runoff rate for most of the territory of Russia under moderate anthropogenic warming scenarios in the XXI century have been confirmed. The most pronounced positive anomalies of the snowmelt and rainfall runoff in the XXI century are possible on large rivers of Siberia in the case of implementation of the RCP8.5 scenario of anthropogenic radiation impact. It has been previously shown that atmospheric and oceanic heat and moisture transfers play an important role in the development of Arctic warming, and ocean surface temperature anomalies at low latitudes have a significant effect on the formation of transfers. Atmospheric circulation, which transports heat, moisture and precipitation, also affects climatic conditions in the catchment areas of the three main Siberian rivers—the Ob, Yenisei, and Lena—the flow of which is approximately half of the annual average inflow of river water into the Arctic Ocean. According to reanalyses and archival data for 1979–2019, air temperature and precipitation in the Ob, Lena, and Yenisei catchment areas are increasing. The greatest increase in precipitation is recorded in the spring months. There is also a maximum positive trend in air temperature in the spring months (March and April). To assess the impact of low latitudes on changes in climatic conditions in the catchment areas, data from ERA5, HadISST reanalyses, and the GPCC project precipitation gridded gauge-analysis data are used. Based on the average monthly surface air temperature at the nodes of the geographic grid in the Northern Hemisphere, the indices of zonal, meridional, and general circulation are calculated. To determine the relationships between indices and climatic parameters, the methods of multivariate cross-correlation analysis are used. It has been found that zonal atmospheric transfers have a significant impact on climatic conditions most of all in the cold part of the year, especially in November and March. In summer, the increase in zonal circulation is accompanied by a decrease in air temperature in the catchment areas, and meridional transfers increase the temperature. The greatest influence of the meridional transport is noted in spring and summer. Climate changes at low latitudes have the greatest effect in autumn on meridional transport in the spring season and on zonal transport in the cold part of the year, especially in March, with a delay of 2 years. The influence of low latitudes on climatic conditions in water catchments is presented in the form of graphs of correlations of climatic parameters and circulation indices on a generalized scheme. The zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha is one of the most successful, notorious, and detrimental aquatic invasive non‐native species worldwide, having invaded Europe and North America while causing substantial ecological and socio‐economic impacts. Here, we investigated the spatiotemporal trends in this species' invasion success using 178 macroinvertebrate abundance time series, containing 1451 records of D. polymorpha collected across nine European countries between 1972–2019. Using these raw (absolute) abundance data, we examined trends and drivers of occurrences and relative abundances of D. polymorpha within invaded communities. Meta‐regression models revealed non‐significant trends both at the European level and for the majority of the invaded countries, except for France (significant decreasing trend) and Hungary (marginally positive trend). At the European level, the number of D. polymorpha occurrences over time followed a flat‐top bell‐shaped distribution, with a steep increase between 1973–1989 followed by a plateau phase prior to significantly declining post‐1998. Using a series of climatic and hydromorphological site‐specific characteristics of invaded and uninvaded sites from two periods (1998–2002; 2011–2015), we found that native richness, non‐native abundance, distance to the next barrier, and elevation were associated with the occurrence of D. polymorpha. We also found that higher native richness and lower latitude were related to lower relative abundances. Using Cohen's D as a measure of D. polymorpha impact, we found that biodiversity within the invaded sites was initially higher than in uninvaded ones, but then declined, suggesting differences in biodiversity trends across invaded and uninvaded sites. While our results emphasise the high invasion success of D. polymorpha, increasing stressors within the context of global change – particularly ongoing climate change – are likely to enhance invasion rates and the impact of D. polymorpha in the near future, exacerbated by the lack of timely and effective management actions. Alluvial rivers aggrade, incise, and adjust their sediment‐transport rates in response to changing sediment and water supply. Fluvial landforms, such as river terraces, and downstream stratigraphic archives may therefore record information about past environmental change. Using a physically based model describing sediment transport and long‐profile evolution of alluvial rivers, we explore how their responses to environmental change depend on distance downstream, forcing timescales, and whether sediment or water supply is varied. We show that amplitudes of aggradation and incision, and therefore the likelihood of terrace formation, are greater upstream and in shorter and/or wetter catchments. Aggradation and incision, and therefore terrace ages, may also lag behind environmental change. How sediment‐transport rates evolve depends strongly on whether water or sediment supply is varied. Diverse responses to environmental change could arise in natural alluvial valleys, controlled by their geometry and hydrology, with important implications for paleo‐environmental interpretations of fluvial archives. Plain Language Summary: Rivers carry sediment from upland regions, where it is produced by weathering and erosion, to low‐lying areas where it is deposited and stored. This process is sensitive to climate: for example, wetter conditions enhance rivers' capacity to transport sediment, causing rivers to cut into their beds, which in turn remobilizes sediment that is transported downstream. Changing climate may also lead to enhanced sediment production and supply to rivers, causing them to accumulate sediment in their beds. Climate cycles can therefore produce alternating periods of sediment accumulation and removal, resulting in ancient floodplains being abandoned and preserved alongside modern rivers ("terraces"), and in variations in the amounts of sediment delivered downstream. Terraces and patterns of sediment accumulation downstream could therefore provide valuable records of past climatic change. We develop a mathematical model that describes the effects of climatic change on river‐bed height and sediment‐transport rates. We show how the amount and timing of river in‐filling and down‐cutting, and the timescales over which they occur, depend on the rate of climatic change, on river length and associated drainage‐basin area, and on the amount of water it carries. These predictions will facilitate more detailed interpretations of terrace records along rivers and of the sedimentary deposits that they leave behind. The Himalayan region is a hotspot in terms of expected future hydrological and geomorphological variations induced by climate change on proglacial areas and the related implications for human societies established along the downstream rivers. Due to the remoteness of the proglacial zones in the Himalayas and the associated logistical problems in carrying out traditional field and UAV-based morphological monitoring activities, remote sensing here plays a crucial role to monitor past and current fluvial dynamics, which could be used to anticipate future changes; however, there has been, so far, limited research on morphological changes in Himalayan proglacial rivers. To address this gap, a morphological classification model was designed to classify recent changes in Himalayan proglacial rivers using the Google Earth Engine platform. The model is the first of its kind developed for the Himalayan region and uses multispectral S-2 satellite data to delineate submerged water channels, vegetated surfaces, and emerged, unvegetated sediment bars, and then to track their variations over time. The study focused on three training sites: Langtang-Khola (Nepal), Saltoro (Pakistan), and Nubra (Jammu and Kashmir) rivers, and one testing site, the Ganga-Bhagirathi River (India). A total of 900 polygons were used as training samples for the random forest classifier, which were further divided into 70% calibration and 30% validation datasets for the training sites, and a separate validation dataset was acquired from the testing site to assess the model performance. The model achieved high accuracy, with an average overall accuracy of 96% and a kappa index of 0.94, indicating the reliability of the S2 data for modeling proglacial geomorphic features in the Himalayan region. Therefore, this study provides a reliable tool to detect past and current morphological changes occurring in the Himalayan proglacial rivers, which will be of great value for both research and river management purposes. Understanding how key environmental factors affect fish communities is necessary for sound environmental management. Accordingly, we studied fish species–environment relationships in Finnish boreal rivers. A self-organizing map (SOM) analysis showed strong relationships between the occurrence of 18 fish species and 10 environmental variables (variance explained: 43.4%). In our logistic regression models run for each fish species, the predictive power varied from poor (AUC = 0.67–0.68) to excellent (AUC = 0.96), indicating that the responses were species-specific. The overall best predictors of the species occurrence were the local variables water depth and water temperature, and the regional variables stream size, altitude and annual mean temperature. Our results on fish assemblage types (clusters), identified by SOM, and co-occurrence of fish species, discovered by a hierarchical cluster analysis, reveal insights into the structure of the river fish assemblages. The Sierra Nevada and Southern Cascades—California's snowy mountains—are primary freshwater sources and natural reservoirs for the states of California and Nevada. These mountains receive precipitation overwhelmingly from wintertime storms including atmospheric rivers (ARs), much of it falling as snow at the higher elevations. Using a seven-decade record of daily observed temperature and precipitation as well as a snow reanalysis and downscaled climate projections, we documented historical and future changes in snow accumulation and snowlines. In four key subregions of California's snowy mountains, we quantified the progressing contribution of ARs and non-AR storms to the evolving and projected snow accumulation and snowlines (elevation of the snow-to-rain transition), exploring their climatology, variability and trends. Historically, snow makes up roughly a third of the precipitation affecting California's mountains. While ARs make up only a quarter of all precipitating days and, due to their relative warmth, produce snowlines higher than do other storms, they contribute over 40% of the total seasonal snow. Under projected unabated warming, snow accumulation would decline to less than half of historical by the late twenty-first century, with the greatest snow loss at mid elevations (from 1500 to 3300 m by the mountain sub-regions) during fall and spring. Central and Southern Sierra Nevada peaks above 3400 m might see occasionally extreme snow accumulations in January–February resulting entirely from wetter ARs. AR-related snowlines are projected to increase by more than 700 m, compared to about 500 m for other storms. Accurate information on snow cover extent plays a crucial role in understanding regional and global climate change, as well as the water cycle, and supports the sustainable development of socioeconomic systems. Remote sensing technology is a vital tool for monitoring snow cover' extent, but accurate identification of shallow snow cover on the Tibetan Plateau has remained challenging. Focusing on the Three-Rivers Headwater Region (THR), this study addressed this issue by developing a snow cover discrimination model (SCDM) using a random forests (RF) algorithm. Using daily observed snow depth (SD) data from 15 stations in the THR during the period 2001–2013, a comprehensive analysis was conducted, considering various factors influencing regional snow cover distribution, such as land surface reflectance, land surface temperature (LST), Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and Normalized Difference Forest Snow Index (NDFSI). The key results were as follows: (1) Optimal model performance was achieved with the parameters Ntree, Mtry, and ratio set to 1000, 2, and 19, respectively. The SCDM outperformed other snow cover products in both pixel-scale and local spatial-scale discrimination. (2) Spectral information of snow cover proved to be the most influential auxiliary variable in discrimination, and the combined inclusion of NDVI and LST improved model performance. (3) The SCDM achieved accuracy of 99.04% for thick snow cover (SD > 4 cm) and 98.54% for shallow snow cover (SD ≤ 4 cm), significantly (p < 0.01) surpassing the traditional dynamic threshold method. Florida spring-fed rivers are known for their submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV). which provides habitat for fish and aquatic crustaceans and food for the Florida manatee. Salinization of coastal spring-fed rivers due to climate change and sea level rise have been documented and can cause changes 10 SAV communities. This study investigated patterns and relationships between the SAV community and salinity of the Chassahowitzka River (Citrus County, FL, USA) to extrapolate the long-term effects of river salinization. A distinct dichotomy was seen in the SAV community structure: communities where salt tolerant Chaetomorpha spp. was present and communities where freshwater filamentous algae species were present. Freshwater filamentous algae demonstrated an inverse relationship with salinity. Chaetomorpha spp. replaced the freshwater filamentous algae in regions too salty for freshwater algae to grow. These patterns in the SAV community resulted in three different ecological zones in the Chassahowitzka River: low salinity/freshwater tidal, transition, and brackish zones. While freshwater filamentous algae and Chaetomorpha spp. were characteristic of the freshwater and brackish zones respectively, both species were identified within the transition zone. Utilizing the presence/absence of these macroalgae types could allow for an in-situ approach of characterizing regions of coastal spring-fed rivers that show increased salinization. Atmospheric rivers (ARs) can be a boon and bane to water resource managers as they have the ability to replenish water reserves, but they can also generate million‐to‐billion‐dollar flood damages. To investigate how anthropogenic climate change may influence AR characteristics in the coastal western United States by end century, we employ a suite of novel tools such as variable resolution in the Community Earth System Model (VR‐CESM), the TempestExtremes AR detection algorithm, and the Ralph, Rutz, et al. (2019, https://doi.org/10.1175/BAMS‐D‐18‐0023.1) AR category scale. We show that end‐century ARs primarily shift from being "mostly or primarily beneficial" to "mostly or primarily hazardous" with a concomitant sharpening and intensification of winter season precipitation totals. Changes in precipitation totals are due to a significant increase in AR (+260%) rather than non‐AR (+7%) precipitation, largely through increases in the most intense category of AR events and a decrease in the interval between landfalling ARs. Anthropogenic climate change has and continues to alter these storms, which has a cascade of societally relevant impacts. We evaluate how end‐century atmospheric river behavior is altered, assuming little‐to‐no carbon mitigation occurs. Using these tools, we find that by end‐century atmospheric river character shifts from being "mostly or primarily beneficial" to "mostly or primarily hazardous." This results in increased precipitation totals, primarily from the most hazardous atmospheric rivers, resulting in a sharpening and intensification of the water year. Some end‐century atmospheric rivers exceed the highest levels of the category scale; however, we do not find that any single storm produces significantly more precipitation. The Three-River Headwater Region (TRHR) has undergone significant hydrological changes and affects the water resources security in the local and downstream areas. We use multiple observational precipitation product, as well as the ERA5 reanalysis dataset to investigate the precipitation variations over the TRHR during the rainy season from 1990 to 2020, and to analyze the contributions of local evaporation and remote water vapor transport to the precipitation and its variations. The precipitation shows a significant increasing trend (17.8 mm decade−1). The precipitation variability (PV) is larger at daily scale and smaller at interannual scale. The spatial distribution of PV varies on different timescales, which reflects the different dominant regimes driving the moisture transport. The mean precipitation in the TRHR is predominantly contributed by western and southern moisture influxes, and the increasing trend of these influxes (10.8 kg s−1 decade−1) determines the precipitation increase. Local evaporation provide about 6% of water vapor for the precipitation, while it has little influence on the precipitation change. The anomalous precipitation in wet and dry years is mainly controlled by the atmospheric circulation over the Tibetan Plateau, which regulates the southwestern moisture transport towards the TRHR. Additionally, the precipitation during 1990–2020 increases by about 3.9% compared to that during 1960–1989. It is related to the higher conversion ratio of water vapor influxes to precipitation and larger evaporation over the TRHR. These findings improve our understanding of the precipitation variations in the TRHR and provide insights for policy makers to optimize water resources management to cope with the global climate change. Sea levels across the planet are rising, particularly along the eastern coast of the United States. Climate‐induced sea level rise can result in the inundation and intrusion of seawater into freshwater drainages. This would alter salinity regimes and lead to the salinization of coastal freshwater ecosystems. Increased salinity levels in freshwater can negatively affect freshwater‐dependent species, including native mussels belonging to the order Unionida, which are highly sensitive to changes in water quality. Sea salt is largely made up of sodium and chloride ions, forming sodium chloride, a known toxicant to freshwater mussels. However, sea salt is a mixture that also contains other major ions, including potassium, sulfate, calcium, strontium, and magnesium, among others. Freshwater mussels exposed to sea salt would be exposed to each of the sea salt ions at the same time, resulting in a mixture toxicity effect. The mixture toxicity of these ions on early life stages of freshwater mussels is largely unknown because most research to date has evaluated individual salt ions in relative isolation. Therefore, we conducted acute toxicity tests on early life stages (glochidia and juvenile) of three freshwater mussel species that inhabit Atlantic Slope drainages (nonsalinity‐adapted Atlanticoncha ochracea, salinity‐adapted A. ochracea, Sagittunio nasutus, and Utterbackiana implicata). Glochidia and juveniles of each species were exposed to a control and six concentrations of Instant Ocean® Sea Salt (IOSS), a synthetic sea salt that closely resembles the ionic composition of natural sea salt. Exposure concentrations were 1 part(s) per thousand (ppt), 2 ppt, 8.5 ppt, 12.5 ppt, 17 ppt, and 34 ppt. We calculated the median effect concentration (EC50) for each of the eight acute toxicity tests and found that glochidia were more sensitive than juveniles to IOSS. At hour 24 EC50s for the glochidia ranged from 0.38 to 3.6 ppt, with the most sensitive freshwater mussel being the nonsalinity‐adapted A. ochracea, exhibiting an EC50 of 0.38 ppt (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.33–0.44). Juvenile freshwater mussels exhibited EC50s at hour 96 ranging from 5.0 to 10.4 ppt, with the least sensitive freshwater mussel being the nonsalinity‐adapted A. ochracea, exhibiting an EC50 of 10.4 ppt (95% CI 9.1–12.0). Our results show that acute exposure to sea salt adversely affects freshwater mussel viability, particularly glochidia. This information can be used to enhance freshwater mussel conservation strategies in regions that are or will be impacted by climate‐induced sea level rise and associated freshwater salinization. The coastal basins of eastern Brazil are influenced by geomorphologic and climatic changes that caused river captures and temporary paleo‐connections due to sea‐level oscillations. These two events can lead to isolation and connection among coastal rivers and have a strong influence on the distribution of freshwater fishes in this region. Characidium bahiense is a small fish species with a wide distribution, ranging from the coastal basins of the North Group of the Northeastern Mata Atlântica ecoregion to São Francisco and Parnaíba ecoregions. The allopatric distribution of C. bahiense associated with the possible morphological and molecular variations among geographically isolated populations stimulated this study.Here, we use an integrative approach, encompassing morphological and mitonuclear data, and paleodrainage reconstruction to better understand the evolutionary history of C. bahiense and to test the putative effects of the current configuration of basins and historical drainage rearrangements on the genetic structuring of the species.Our mitochondrial data show that C. bahiense is not a monophyletic species since the specimens from one locality are more closely related to Characidium cf. lagosantense than to other populations of C. bahiense. Multilocus analyses, however, recovered the monophyly of this species, although the molecular delimitation method considers each mitochondrial DNA lineages as a separated species. Overall, the morphological data revealed some intraspecific overlapping variation, suggesting that all specimens of C. bahiense are conspecific.Molecular analyses combined with geomorphological information suggest that the current distribution of C. bahiense is the result of climate change that directly affected river flow dynamics and recent riverine captures during the Pleistocene.The use of multiple data sources not only provides a more reliable interpretation of the evolutionary history of a species, but can also avoid arbitrary taxonomic decisions. Future phylogeographic studies involving other freshwater fish species with a similar distribution to C. bahiense are necessary to assist in understanding the scenarios presented here. Human activities and climate change threaten coldwater organisms in freshwater ecosystems by causing rivers and streams to warm, increasing the intensity and frequency of warm temperature events, and reducing thermal heterogeneity. Cold‐water refuges are discrete patches of relatively cool water that are used by coldwater organisms for thermal relief and short‐term survival. Globally, cohesive management approaches are needed that consider interlinked physical, biological, and social factors of cold‐water refuges. We review current understanding of cold‐water refuges, identify gaps between science and management, and evaluate policies aimed at protecting thermally sensitive species. Existing policies include designating cold‐water habitats, restricting fishing during warm periods, and implementing threshold temperature standards or guidelines. However, these policies are rare and uncoordinated across spatial scales and often do not consider input from Indigenous peoples. We propose that cold‐water refuges be managed as distinct operational landscape units, which provide a social and ecological context that is relevant at the watershed scale. These operational landscape units provide the foundation for an integrated framework that links science and management by (1) mapping and characterizing cold‐water refuges to prioritize management and conservation actions, (2) leveraging existing and new policies, (3) improving coordination across jurisdictions, and (4) implementing adaptive management practices across scales. Our findings show that while there are many opportunities for scientific advancement, the current state of the sciences is sufficient to inform policy and management. Our proposed framework provides a path forward for managing and protecting cold‐water refuges using existing and new policies to protect coldwater organisms in the face of global change. The Three-Rivers Headwater Region (TRHR), located in the hinterland of the Tibetan Plateau, serves as the "Water Tower of China", providing vital water conservation (WC) services. Understanding the variations in WC is crucial for locally tailored efforts to adapt to climate change. This study improves the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs (InVEST) water yield model by integrating long-term time series of vegetation data, emphasizing the role of interannual vegetation variation. This study also analyzes the influences of various factors on WC variations. The results show a significant increase in WC from 1991 to 2020 (1.4 mm/yr, p < 0.05), with 78.17% of the TRHR showing improvement. Precipitation is the primary factor driving the interannual variations in WC. Moreover, distinct interactions play dominant roles in WC across different eco-geographical regions. In the north-central and western areas, the interaction between annual precipitation and potential evapotranspiration has the highest influence. Conversely, the interaction between annual precipitation and vegetation has the greatest impact in the eastern and central-southern areas. This study provides valuable insights into the complex interactions between the land and atmosphere of the TRHR, which are crucial for enhancing the stability of the ecosystem. Formulation of the problem. Studies and data on modern changes in the winter minimum average monthly flow of the rivers of the Lake Sevan basin and their climatic characteristics have acquired great practical importance and considerable interest due to the increased use of water resources for the purposes of various types of economic activities, in particular, in connection with the development of the economy, hydropower, irrigation, population growth and rising living standards. Especially relevant are the calculations of the minimum flow in relation to solving the problems of water supply for settlements, industrial enterprises. The aim of the work. Assessment of modern changes in the winter minimum average monthly runoff of rivers in the Lake Sevan basin and their climatic characteristics. Methods. The following methods were used in the work: mathematical-statistical, extrapolation, interpolation, spatial analysis, analogy, correlation and cartography. Results. A physical map has been compiled with a network of meteorological stations and hydrological posts in the Lake Sevan basin. Close correlations were obtained between the values of the winter minimum average monthly runoff and the average runoff of the winter period for a hydrological year. These dependences can be used for preliminary estimates of the minimum runoff of the winter low-water period of unstudied rivers in the territory under consideration. In the course of the research, the winter minimum average monthly discharges were calculated by months and for the entire observation period, the average value of the minimum runoff for the winter low water, and the linear trend of the climatic characteristic. Based on the obtained results, a map of the distribution of the modul of the average minimum runoff of the winter low-water period and the coefficients of the linear trend of the winter air temperature were constructed. Examples of curves of long-term changes in precipitation amounts for the autumn and winter periods, the sum of positive temperatures and the number of days with a positive average daily air temperature in the winter period for a series of meteorological stations in the study area are presented. The rivers of the Lake Sevan basin are characterized by an uneven spatio-temporal distribution of winter minimum runoff and climatic characteristics, changes in the winter average monthly minimum runoff, precipitation amounts for the autumn and winter periods are multidirectional, and air temperature changes are only an upward trend. In the area under consideration, there is mainly (by 8 out of 12 stations under study) a tendency to decrease in the values of the minimum average monthly river flow. The conducted studies lead us to the conclusion that the main factor causing changes in the low-water runoff of the rivers in the Lake Sevan basin in winter is the air temperature, or rather, its increase. It follows from this that when calculating and forecasting winter runoff, it is necessary to relate the values of runoff and air temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Atmospheric rivers (AR) are important drivers of heavy precipitation events in western and central Europe and often associated with intense floods. So far, the ARs response to climate change in Europe has been investigated by global climate models within the CMIP5 framework. However, their spatial resolution between 1 and 3° is too coarse for an adequate assessment of local to regional precipitation patterns. Using a regional climate model with 0.22° resolution we downscale an ensemble of 24 global climate simulations following the greenhouse gas scenarios RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP8.5. The performance of the model was tested against ER-I reanalysis data. The downscaled simulation notably better represents small-scale spatial characteristics which is most obvious over the terrain of the Iberian Peninsula where the AR induced precipitation pattern clearly reflect eat-west striking topographical elements resulting in zonal bands of high and low AR impact. Over central Europe the model simulates a less far propagation of ARs toward eastern Europe compared to ERA-I but a higher share of AR forced heavy precipitation events especially Norway where 60 % of annual precipitation maxima are related to ARs. We find ARs more frequent and more intense in a future warmer climate especially in the higher emission scenarios whereas the changes are mostly mitigated under the assumption of RCP2.6. They also propagate further inland to eastern Europe in a warmer climate. In the high emission scenario RCP8.5 AR induced precipitation rates increase between 20 and 40 % in western central Europe while mean precipitation rates increase by maximal 12 %. Over the Iberian Peninsula AR induced precipitation rates slightly decrease around -6 % but mean rates decrease around -15 %. The result of these changes is an overall increased contribution of ARs to heavy precipitation with greatest impact over Iberia (15-30 %). Over Norway average AR precipitation rates decline between -5 to -30 %. These reductions most likely the originate from regional dynamical changes. In fact, over Norway we find ARs originating from > 60° N are reduced by up to 20 % while those originating south of 45° N are increased. Also, no clear climate change signal is seen for AR related heavy precipitation and annual maximum precipitation over Norway where the uncertainty of the ensemble is quite large. Given the speed at which humans are changing the climate, species with high degrees of endemism may not have time to avoid extinction through adaptation. We investigated through teleconnection analysis the origin of rainfall that determines the phylogenetic diversity of rainforest frogs and the effects of microclimate differences in shaping the morphological traits of isolated populations (which contribute to greater phylogenetic diversity and speciation). We also investigated through teleconnection analysis how deforestation in Amazonia can affect ecosystem services that are fundamental to maintaining the climate of the Atlantic rainforest biodiversity hotspot. Seasonal winds known as flying rivers carry water vapor from Amazonia to the Atlantic Forest, and the breaking of this ecosystem service could lead Atlantic Forest species to population decline and extinction in the short term. Our results suggest that the selection of morphological traits that shape Atlantic Forest frog diversity and their population dynamics are influenced by the Amazonian flying rivers. Our results also suggest that the increases of temperature anomalies in the Atlantic Ocean due to global warming and in the Amazon forest due to deforestation are already breaking this cycle and threaten the biodiversity of the Atlantic Forest hotspot. Under climate change, river ecological base flow becomes particularly critical for the health and stability of inland river ecosystems in arid regions. Taking three typical seasonal inland rivers, including the Kriya River, the Niya River, and the Qarqan River, all on the northern slope of the Kunlun Mountains, as research objects, meteorological data from 1958 to 2019 and hydrological data from 1978 to 2014 were selected to analyze the characteristics of ecological base flow under climate change. The results show that in the past 60 years, the temperature in the Kriya River, Niya River, and Qarqan River basins has warmed at rates of 0.235 °C•(10a)−1, 0.223 °C•(10a)−1, and 0.177 °C•(10a)−1, respectively, while the precipitation has increased at the rates of 0.88 mm•(10a)−1, 3.90 mm•(10a)−1, and 7.92 mm•(10a)−1. The Tennant method was determined as the best algorithm for ecological base flow of inland rivers in arid regions. The interannual maximum values of ecological base flow all occurred in 2010, with three rivers increasing by 5.098 m3·s−1, 2.416 m3·s−1, and 11.343 m3·s−1 respectively, and the regional average increasing by 6.286 m3·s−1. The maximum ecological base flow within the year is in July, and the minimum value is in January, with a high proportion of the flood season. The monthly ecological base flow of rivers has a strong correlation with the monthly temperature and precipitation, with the strongest correlation in the Qarqan River basin and the correlation coefficients of 0.876 and 0.917. We propose ecological base flow guarantee objectives for the three rivers during the dry season, and clarify that the flood season is the key point of ecological base flow guarantee. The guarantee objectives are 0.974 m3·s−1, 0.154 m3·s−1, and 2.167 m3·s−1, for the three rivers, respectively. Our research results can provide scientific reference for the management and regulation of water resources and ecological protection of the northern slope of the Kunlun Mountains. Water pollution in the river mouths in the northern European part of Russia has been assessed using chemical parameters, and the pollution for the period of 2012–2020 has been characterized. Water pollution in the mouths of the Onega, Northern Dvina, Mezen, and Pechora rivers has been analyzed in relation to the aggregate anthropogenic and regional natural characteristics. The results make it possible to reveal trends towards either a reduction or an increase in water pollution caused by the decrease in the wastewater discharge and changes in rivers water content under conditions of current changes in the climate of the northern European part of Russia. The atmospheric river (AR) frequency trends over the Southern Hemisphere are investigated using three reanalyses and two Community Earth System Model (CESM) ensembles. The results show that AR frequency has been increasing over the Southern Ocean and decreasing over lower latitudes in the past four decades and that ARs have been shifting poleward. While the observed trends are mostly driven by the poleward shift of the westerly jet, fully coupled CESM experiments indicate anthropogenic forcing would result in positive AR frequency trends over the Southern Ocean due mostly to moisture changes. The difference between the observed trends and anthropogenically driven trends can be largely reconciled by the atmosphere‐only CESM simulations forced by observed sea surface temperatures: Sea surface temperature variability characteristic of the negative phase of the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation strongly suppresses the moisture‐driven trends while enhances the circulation‐induced trends over the Southern Ocean, thus bringing the simulated trends into closer agreement with the observed trends. Plain Language Summary: Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are "rivers" in the sky that carry a huge amount of water vapor equivalent to the world's largest rivers on the ground. Because of the amount of water vapor they carry, ARs can cause extreme rainfall and floods upon landfall when the moisture is condensed out by mountain barriers or other favorable conditions. Most of the studies so far have focused on ARs in the Northern Hemisphere. In this study, we found that ARs in the Southern Hemisphere have been occurring at increasingly higher‐latitude regions in the past four decades and that this observed trend is mostly due to winds getting stronger at higher‐latitude regions in the Southern Hemisphere. Using results from climate model simulations, we show that the observed AR trends in the Southern Hemisphere are driven by both human activities, such as greenhouse gas increases and ozone depletion, and the internal variability of sea surface temperatures due to the coupled atmosphere‐ocean system. The poleward shift of ARs in the Southern Hemisphere may have major implications for the amount of moisture and heat transported into Antarctica, thus may also have profound impacts on the Antarctic and in turn, global climate. Arctic rivers and water resources currently experience significant hydrological changes due to climate change and global warming. The flow regime alteration in Arctic rivers strongly influences the conservation and sustainability of the native biodiversity of the riverine ecosystem. The change in major characteristics of the daily and monthly flow regime of seven arctic rivers has been assessed in this study. The daily flow (40–120 years) at the outlet of Lena River, Yenisey River, Kolyma River, and Ob' River in Russia; Yukon River in the USA; Mackenzie River in Canada; and Tana River, Norway was used. Except for the Tana River, the rest of these rivers have been regulated. In addition, monthly flow alteration in the headwater of these rivers and below sixteen dams was assessed. In this research, we applied 'Indicator of Hydrologic Alteration' (IHA) and 'River Impact' (RI) methods to estimate daily monthly flow change in the river. Based on the daily analysis, the most significant change was observed for Yenisey and Ob rivers. This review explores the implications of climate change for the functioning of plant species as biogeomorphic engineers of temperate river systems, including the potential for an increasing role of invasive alien plant species (IAPS). First, we introduce engineer plants as important controls, along with flowing water and transported sediments, on the morphodynamics of river systems and the likelihood that climate change may affect the contributions of species within their native habitats. We then examine through the prism of the fluvial biogeomorphic succession model how climate change may accelerate the establishment of IAPS, the possible consequences for the performance and/or persistence of native engineer plant species, and thus the potential pathways of influence for IAPS on river morphodynamics. Finally, we present examples of the impacts of invasions by specific plant species along particular river systems and consider their potential biogeomorphic impact against a backdrop of climate change. Loss, replacement, or displacement of native plant species in the river corridor by IAPS can potentially alter biogeomorphic phenomena by directly increasing or decreasing erosion and/or sedimentation and the associated development of fluvial landforms. In the shorter term, increased climate disturbance may provide more establishment opportunities for opportunistic IAPS. In the longer term, under heavy establishment, IAPS may alter the coupled assembly of plant communities, fluvial landforms and ecosystem development, potentially resulting in river landscape metamorphosis and significantly changed habitat conditions. Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are long, narrow filamentary regions of enhanced vertically integrated water vapor transport (IVT) that play an important role in regional water supply and hydrometeorological extremes. Here, an AR detection algorithm is applied to global reanalysis from Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2), to objectively and consistently characterize ARs regionally across the continental United States (CONUS). The characteristics of AR and associated precipitation are computed at the gridpoint scale and summarized over the sevenU.S. National ClimateAssessment regions.ARs aremost frequent in the autumn and winter in theWest, spring in the Great Plains, and autumn in the Midwest and Northeast. ARs show regional and seasonal variability in basic geometry and IVT. AR IVT composites reveal annually consistent northeastwarddirected moisture transport from the Pacific Ocean in the West, whereas moisture transport patterns vary seasonally across the Southern Great Plains and Midwest. Linked AR precipitation characteristics suggest that a substantial proportion of extreme events, defined as the top 5% of 3-day precipitation totals, are associated with ARs over many parts of CONUS, including the East. Regional patterns of AR-associated precipitation highlight that seasonally varying moisture transport and lifting mechanisms differ between the East and the West where orographic lifting is key. Our study aims to contribute a comprehensive and consistent CONUS-wide, regional-scale analysis of ARs in support of ongoing NCA efforts. This article seeks to advance understanding of the changing interconnections between rivers, infrastructure, and power relations as well as how these are increasingly shaped by a globalizing China and climate change. To do so, it analyzes damming practices in Cambodia and their evolution under a post-neoliberal, concessionary governing mode that materializes in enclaves of corporate authority under Chinese state-owned enterprises. Drawing from the literature on the political life of Chinese overseas infrastructure projects, this article develops the idea of ambiguously entangled enclaves. The focus is on the four most recent large-scale dams in Cambodia and the kinds of dis/connections, altered hydrosocial relations, and power dynamics they generate. The article highlights patterns of dis/entanglement that illuminate the role of Chinese infrastructural engagement in shaping new political-ecological relations and socio-spatial formations in Cambodia and beyond. Human activities have cumulatively altered natural thermal regimes, with impacts and occurrences of extreme events amplified and exacerbated by global climate change. This leads to cascading ecological impacts in river systems. This paper translates knowledge generated over more than ten years of thermal research in South Africa into a protocol for establishing environmental water temperature guidelines for perennial rivers in South Africa. Tools and protocols for generating thermal guidelines reflecting seasonal variation and daily ranges, setting ecologically relevant thermal targets, and approaches for incorporating water temperature into management plans are presented. Tools include a spatial (thermal) framework within which air-water temperature models are applied and reference thermographs are generated; national maps of system resilience and air-water temperature model accuracy; a database of variables likely to indicate system resilience and model accuracy; innovative tools for generating thermal metrics and thermographs; a screening process to assess thermal risk; and an evaluation process to assess thermal change based on deviation from reference or expected thermal conditions. The importance and value of thermal data was recognised by the freshwater community and collection of water temperature data strongly endorsed. Uncertainties of runoff projections arise from different sources of origin, such as climate scenarios (RCPs), global climate models (GCMs) and statistical downscaling (SD) methods. Assessment of uncertainties related to the mentioned sources was carried out for selected rivers of Lithuania (Minija, Nevėžis and Šventoji). These rivers reflect conditions of different hydrological regions (western, central and southeastern). Using HBV software, hydrological models were created for river runoff projections in the near (2021-2040) and far (2081-2100) future. The runoff projections according to three RCP scenarios, three GCMs and three SD methods were created. In the Western hydrological region represented by the Minija River, the GCMs were the most dominant uncertainty source (41.0-44.5%) in the runoff projections. Meanwhile, uncertainties of runoff projections from central (Nevėžis River) and southeastern (Šventoji River) regions of Lithuania were related to SD methods and the range of uncertainties fluctuates from 39.4% to 60.9%. In western Lithuania, the main source of rivers' supply is precipitation, where projections highly depend on selected GCMs. The rivers from central and southeastern regions are more sensitive to the SD methods, which not always precisely adjust the meteorological variables from a large grid cell of GCM into catchment scale. The change in the flow of plain rivers in Kazakhstan in recent decades is done due to the influence of both climatic factors and anthropogenic impacts. Revealing their role is extremely important for understanding the genesis of hydrological changes that have already occurred and possible in the future, as well as for taking measures to reduce their undesirable consequences. The complexity of solving this problem lies in the fact that climatic and anthropogenic changes in river runoff are closely interrelated and often interact on the runoff not directly, but indirectly. The intensity of anthropogenic impact, the variability of climate characteristics determine changes in the hydrological regime of water bodies. Climatic variability leads to an increase in the likelihood of adverse hydrometeorological phenomena, and human economic activity in the watershed and in the riverbed leads to a quantitative and qualitative change in the main characteristics of the hydrological regime, degradation of river ecosystems. The changes in the annual runoff of plain rivers are estimated based on the method based on the restoration of the natural runoff of the last decades, during which significant anthropogenic changes took place. It is shown that climatic and anthropogenic factors act on the runoff both unidirectionally, increasing or decreasing it, and in opposite directions. At the same time, the influence of anthropogenic factors, mainly reservoirs and water consumption, is commensurate with the influence of climatic factors, and in many cases exceeds it. Contemporary management practices have artificially confined (strangled) river systems in Aotearoa New Zealand to support intensified land use in riparian areas. These practices work against nature, diminishing the functionality and biodiversity values of living rivers, and associated socio‐cultural relations with rivers. River confinement can accentuate flood risk by promoting development in vulnerable locations and limiting the flexibility to adapt to changing climate, prospectively accentuating future disasters. To date, uptake of space‐to‐move management interventions that seek to address such shortcomings is yet to happen in Aotearoa New Zealand. This is despite the fact that such practices directly align with Māori (indigenous) conceptualizations of rivers as indivisible, living entities. Treaty of Waitangi obligations that assert Māori rights alongside colonial rights of a settler society provide an additional driver for uptake of space‐to‐move initiatives. This article outlines a biophysical prioritization framework to support the development and roll out of space‐to‐move interventions in ways that work with the character, behavior, condition, and evolutionary trajectory (recovery potential) of each river system in Aotearoa. Mass mortality of Unionidae from the genera Middendorffinaia, Buldowskia, and Sinanodonta was observed in the plain rivers of the south of Primorsky Krai (south of the Russian Far East) in the abnormally hot and low-water summer–autumn season of 2021. Nodularia douglasiae (Griffith et Pidgeon, 1833) was the most resistant and thus least affected species, the species from the genera Sinanodonta and Middendorffinaia, the least resistant and the most affected. Climate change is contributing to rapid changes in lake ice cover across the Northern Hemisphere, thereby impacting local communities and ecosystems. Using lake ice cover time‐series spanning over 87 yr for 43 lakes across the Northern Hemisphere, we found that the interannual variability in ice duration, measured as standard deviation, significantly increased in only half of our studied lakes. We observed that the interannual variability in ice duration peaked when lakes were, on average, covered by ice for about 1 month, while both longer and shorter long‐term mean ice cover duration resulted in lower interannual variability in ice duration. These results demonstrate that the ice cover duration can become so short that the interannual variability rapidly declines. The interannual variability in ice duration showed a strong dependency on global temperature anomalies and teleconnections, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation and El Niño–Southern Oscillation. We conclude that many lakes across the Northern Hemisphere will experience a decline in interannual ice cover variability and shift to open water during the winter under a continued global warming trend which will affect lake biological, cultural, and economic processes. Global warming is destabilizing the cryosphere, with consequences for glaciers, permafrost, sea ice and lake ice. Polar lakes have short ice‐free seasons, and small changes in ice cover duration have the potential to provoke alterations to ecosystem structure. However, these lakes are understudied, and the consequences for mixing regimes, thermal structures and biogeochemical processes remain unclear. We measured three annual cycles of dissolved oxygen, temperature and specific conductivity in a lake at ∼83°N to investigate limnological processes and their interannual variability. There were sharp interannual contrasts in lake dynamics, with state shifts in mixing, stratification and oxygen regimes due to air temperature variability and meteorological events. We also observed unusual thermal profiles that were associated with solute gradients. These striking differences underscore the sensitivity of high Arctic lakes to interannual variations in meteorological forcing, and their susceptibility to regime shifts in response to ongoing global change. High Arctic lakes experience brief summer ice‐free periods and their annual dynamics remain largely unexplored despite their location in one of the most rapidly warming regions on Earth. Lake ice thickness (LIT) is one of the key climate variables in the lake ice domain, but there are currently large uncertainties in the retrieval of LIT. We present and validate a new LIT retrieval method that utilizes ICESat-2 data to assist CryoSat-2 echo peak selection, aiming to improve the accuracy of LIT retrieval and enable data acquisition without on-site measurements. The method involves screening out similar ICESat-2 and CryoSat-2 tracks based on time and space constraints. It also involves dynamically adjusting the range constraint window of CryoSat-2 waveforms based on the high-precision lake ice surface ellipsoid height obtained from ICESat-2/ATL06 data. Within this range constraint window, the peak selection strategy is used to determine the scattering interfaces between snow-ice and ice-water. By utilizing the distance between the scattering horizons, the thickness of the lake ice can be determined. We performed the ice thickness retrieval experiment for Baker Lake in winter and verified it against the on-site measurement data. The results showed that the accuracy was about 0.143 m. At the same time, we performed the ice thickness retrieval experiment for Great Bear Lake (GBL), which does not have on-site measurement data, and compared it with the climate change trend of GBL. Torrential rainfall occurring along the North American northeast coast (NANC) in summer and autumn is accompanied by strong atmospheric rivers (ARs), which efficiently transport abundant moisture along a narrow-stretched path associated with a low pressure system. In this study, an autodetection method was used to identify ARs that reached the NANC, based on the 6-hourly data of the ERA-Interim reanalysis conducted by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, in summer and autumn from 1979 to 2016. Stronger ARs tended to occur in the eastern flank of a cyclonic anomaly that covered the entire North American east coast from Florida to Newfoundland, with a positive precipitation anomaly over the NANC. The cyclonic anomalies and precipitation in autumn were stronger but less frequent than those in summer. Cyclonic anomalies were parts of westward-tilting wavelike circulation perturbations moving into North America from the extratropical North Pacific and moving continuously eastward, reaching the east coast in approximately five days. The Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) High-Resolution Atmospheric Model (HiRAM), which realistically simulates the occurrence frequency and key characteristics of ARs in current climatic conditions, was used to project the AR activity and corresponding circulations in the future warmer climate under the representative concentration pathway 8.5 scenario. The HiRAM that was driven by sea surface temperature changes projected an overall increase in the occurrence of stronger ARs in both summer and autumn and the precipitation strength in autumn along the NANC by the end of the twenty-first century. This projected enhancement was contributed to by two processes—a smaller contribution was from the weakened basin-scale North Atlantic anticyclone but with higher moisture content, and a larger contribution was from the enhancement in anomalous circulation during AR events with integrated vapor transport exceeding the 75th percentile. These results suggest that the influence of strong ARs on the NANC may increase in the warmer future due to the combination of increased water vapor in the large-scale environment (thermodynamic effect) and enhanced anomalous circulations (dynamic effect). Performance in simulating atmospheric rivers (ARs) over western North America based on AR frequency and landfall latitude is evaluated for 10 models from phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project among which the CanESM2 model performs well. ARs are classified into southern, northern, and middle types using self-organizing maps in the ERA-Interim reanalysis and CanESM2. The southern type is associated with the development and eastward movement of anomalous lower pressure over the subtropical eastern Pacific, while the northern type is linked with the eastward movement of anomalous cyclonic circulation stimulated by warm sea surface temperatures over the subtropical western Pacific. The middle type is connected with the negative phase of North Pacific Oscillation–west Pacific teleconnection pattern. CanESM2 is further used to investigate projected AR changes at the end of the twenty-first century under the representative concentration pathway 8.5 scenario. AR definitions usually reference fixed integrated water vapor or integrated water vapor transport thresholds. AR changes under such definitions reflect both thermodynamic and dynamic influences. We therefore also use a modified AR definition that isolates change from dynamic influences only. The total AR frequency doubles compared to the historical period, with the middle AR type contributing the largest increases along the coasts of Vancouver Island and California. Atmospheric circulation (dynamic) changes decrease northern AR type frequency while increasing middle AR type frequency, indicating that future changes of circulation patterns modify the direct effect of warming on AR frequency, which would increase ARs (relative to fixed thresholds) almost everywhere along the North American coastline. Flooding events associated with extreme precipitation have had large impacts in Norway. It is well known that these heavy precipitation events affecting Norway (and other parts of Europe) are strongly associated with atmospheric rivers (ARs). We assess trends in Norwegian AR characteristics, and the influence of AR variability on extreme precipitation in Norway. We first evaluate the ability of a high-resolution global climate model (EC-Earth) to simulate ARs, compared to ERA-Interim. We evaluate the EC-Earth simulated relationship between ARs and extreme precipitation in western Norway, compared to the observed relationship. We find that EC-Earth is able to simulate well the statistics of AR events and the related precipitation. The intensity and frequency of ARs making landfall in Norway both increase by the end of the century and we find a shift in seasonality of AR events in the future period. In two regions on the west coast, the majority of winter precipitation maxima are associated with AR events (> 80% of cases). Next we assess the influence of AR variability on extreme precipitation. A non-stationary extreme value analysis indicates that the magnitude of extreme precipitation events in these regions is associated with AR intensity. Indeed, the 1-in-20 year extreme event is 17% larger when the AR-intensity is high, compared to when it is low. There is little influence of specific humidity on the variability of extreme precipitation after all variables are de-trended. Finally, we find that the region mean temperature during winter AR events increases in the future. In the future, when the climate is generally warmer, AR days will tend to make landfall when the temperature is above the freezing point. This investigation into trends in annual discharge of Canadian rivers focuses on long-term hydrometric stations having record lengths of at least 75 years. Eliminating stations with significant non-stationarities in mean annual discharge, and stations having evidence of a large diversion or a withdrawal, resulted in a final streamflow dataset of 113 Water Survey of Canada, WSC, hydrometric stations. In order to assist with the identification of potential factors contributing to a trend, at least one representative long-term climate station was selected for each long-term hydrometric station. A comprehensive trend assessment was completed on both annual discharge and precipitation (rainfall, snowfall, and total). Of the 113 long-term hydrometric stations, significant trend was identified at 21 sites: four associated with anthropogenic activities in the watershed, eight consistent with climate change (i.e. changes in annual rainfall, or annual snowfall or annual precipitation) and the remaining nine consistent with some combination of climate and anthropogenic activities. With respect to the climate stations, about 50% had a significant trend in total precipitation without a corresponding significant trend in annual discharge. The ratio of discharge stations with significant trend to climate stations with significant trend varied with ecoregion, from 0% to 40%. Factors contributing to this discrepancy include a possible compensating trend in evapotranspiration and a watershed that is relatively insensitive to small changes in precipitation. Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) are an iconic freshwater salmonid native to northeastern North America. They prefer cold, clean rivers and lakes, and have been culturally, socially and economically valued for decades. Overharvest and deforestation associated with European settlement in southern Ontario, Canada led to notable declines in brook trout abundance in rivers and streams by the late 1800s. Today, they are threatened by further habitat degradation, non‐native species, and climate change. In this study, we document brook trout occupancy in rivers and streams of the Mixedwood Plains Ecozone in southern Ontario, between 1970–1980 and 2000–2010. We used generalised linear models to determine occupancy variation between the two time periods at five spatial scales spanning multiple watershed levels. We detected a decline in occupancy between time periods for the tertiary (from 23% to 17%) and quaternary (from 35% to 22%) watershed scales. In the Credit River‐Sixteen Mile Creek watershed, mean occupancy decreased to a third of past estimate (from 31% to 10%). For a subset of 86 sites with overlapping sampling in both periods no temporal trend was detected, but a post‐hoc analysis indicated low statistical power (0.07), which suggested that more intensive sampling would be needed to better quantify brook trout occupancy changes at this scale.
