Energy efficiency and renewable energy are the two main research topics for sustainable energy. In the past ten years, countries around the world have invested a lot of manpower into new energy research. However, in addition to new energy development, energy efficiency technologies need to be emphasized to promote production efficiency and reduce environmental pollution. In order to improve power production efficiency, an integrated solution regarding the issue of electric power load forecasting was proposed in this study. The solution proposed was to, in combination with persistence and search algorithms, establish a new integrated ultra-short-term electric power load forecasting method based on the adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and back-propagation neural network (BPN), which can be applied in forecasting electric power load in Taiwan. The research methodology used in this paper was mainly to acquire and process the all-day electric power load data of Taiwan Power and execute preliminary forecasting values of the electric power load by applying ANFIS, BPN and persistence. The preliminary forecasting values of the electric power load obtained therefrom were called suboptimal solutions and finally the optimal weighted value was determined by applying a search algorithm through integrating the above three methods by weighting. In this paper, the optimal electric power load value was forecasted based on the weighted value obtained therefrom. It was proven through experimental results that the solution proposed in this paper can be used to accurately forecast electric power load, with a minimal error. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In today's highly competitive environment, modeling the relationship between inputs and outputs using limited data for a management system at the early stages is important, but difficult. The virtual sample generation (VSG) method has been proposed in many studies to explore potential information to improve prediction performance of learning models for small datasets. However, those studies in general must assume an underlying distribution such as a linear triangular membership function or a Gaussian distribution to generate virtual samples. Thus, previous VSG methods may not effectively upgrade learning performance when the assumed distribution is not elastic enough for small datasets. To address this issue, in this paper, we proposed a novel VSG method called Newton-VSG method to generate virtual samples for small datasets with non-linear and asymmetric distributions. In the suggested method, we used Newton's method to estimate the minimum value of data range and the shape of data distribution. Further, we developed two deep learning models including Siamese network (SN) model for screening virtual sample input values and bagging auto-encoder (AE) model for predicting virtual sample output to ensure the quality of virtual samples. One real dataset for solidification cracking susceptibility test data and an other real dataset obtained from TFT-LCD process of a leading company in Taiwan were used to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method. On the partial least square regression (PLSR) and the back propagation neural network (BPNN) predictive models, we compared the proposed method with three state-of-the-art VSG methods in items of the mean absolute error (MAE) and the root mean squared error (RMSE). This study describes two machine learning techniques applied to predict liquefaction susceptibility of soil based on the standard penetration test (SPT) data from the 1999 Chi-Chi, Taiwan earthquake. The first machine learning technique which uses Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based on multi-layer perceptions (MLP) that are trained with Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation algorithm. The second machine learning technique uses the Support Vector machine (SVM) that is firmly based on the theory of statistical learning theory, uses classification technique. ANN and SVM have been developed to predict liquefaction susceptibility using corrected SPT [(N1)60] and cyclic stress ratio (CSR). Further, an attempt has been made to simplify the models, requiring only the two parameters [(N1)60 and peck ground acceleration (αmax/g)], for the prediction of liquefaction susceptibility. The developed ANN and SVM models have also been applied to different case histories available globally. The paper also highlights the capability of the SVM over the ANN models. Abstract: Stock price variation predictions are at the core of many research issues, and neural networks (NNs) are widely applied and were proven to be more efficient than time series forecasting for stock price forecasting. However, this type of research always determines the parameter settings of the NNs rationally through a trial-and-error methodology. This paper integrates design of experiment (DOE), Taguchi method, and back-propagation NN (BPNN) to construct a robust engine to further optimize the prediction accuracy under a robust DOE-based predictor. Adopting data from Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), the technical analytical indexes and β value of the listed stocks of TWSE were computed. Abstract: Under limited resources in corporation education training, to enhance human resources quality, making education training program planning more efficient is a significant issue in training future talents. In accordance with Taiwan TrainQuali System (TTQS), the basic training structure is ton specify P (Plan) and D (Design). Ensuing results will be easier and successful. From TTQS database of Bureau of Employment and Vocational Training, corporations in Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli winning Gold Medals (Group B) have gaps outside control line in P and D. Enhancement is needed in the gap. The paper aims at a certain company winning Gold Medals in Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli to locate hidden or unobvious information with data mining, which will help future education training course planning and design. The researchers use two-stage clustering (SOM and K-means) under data mining theory to collect personnel training data of Automobile Corporation A in Taiwan and China with data mining and analysis. The results under the two algorithms will serve as reference for future education training courses. In the end, in combination of back-propagation neural network to develop education training prediction model, the research offers reference for writing knowledge management system to enhance effects of personnel participation in training at corporations. Abstract: Accurate predictions of storm surge and surge deviation are essential for industrial activities in coastal areas. Usually numerical hydrodynamic models or empirical methods are used to estimate the storm surge. This paper proposes an alternative back-propagation neural network (BPN) approach to forecast the storm surge and surge deviation. The prediction of storm surge from a previous typhoon is used as a training set to form predictions for the next event. Wind velocity, wind direction, atmospheric pressure and astronomical tide were selected as inputs in the neural network. The observations obtained during three typhoons from four stations in Taiwan were used to illustrate performance of the BPN model. Comparisons with numerical methods indicate that the storm surge and surge deviation can be efficiently predicted using BPN. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: It is essential to forecast the variation of storm surge in coastal areas during the typhoon attacks. Conventional investigations of storm surge often used the method of numerical hydrodynamic models or empirical formula. In this paper, the back-propagation neural network (BPN) is applied to predict the short-term typhoon surge and surge deviation in order to overcome the problem of exclusive and nonlinear relationships. The observations obtained during three typhoons of Taichung harbor in Taiwan are verified by the present model. From the comparison with numerical methods, it can be found that the short-term storm surge and surge deviation can be efficiently predicted 1 to 6h ahead using BPN. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• The online monitoring system to detect the deteriorative insulators by predicting the leakage current. • The performance of predicting leakage current by utilizing the surface spark discharge features significantly outperform the persistent data models. • The particle swarm optimization combined neural network algorithm surpasses other persistent model in predicting leakage current. • The change of ROI brightness has stronger correlation with the leakage current comparing with the percentage of spark area. The paper has completely built an online monitoring system to detect deteriorative insulator by predicting the leakage current which assist maintenance personnel in determining whether insulators need to be cleaned or replaced and improve maintenance efficiency in Taiwan. The real-time monitoring systems are installed on the 69 kV and 161 kV transmission towers. The local meteorological data such as temperature, humidity and dew point, and images of spark discharge phenomenon are collected to identify the correlation with the leakage current of deteriorative insulators. The forecasting model is enhanced by using the image features of surface spark discharge phenomenon (SSDP). The percentage of spark area and the change in the brightness of region of interest (ROI) can be utilized as exogenous inputs to the predicting model. Correspondently, a particle swarm optimization based back propagation neural network (PSO-BPNN) is applied to improve the accuracy in prediction. The proposed developing model combined enhancement inputs are compared with persistent models, such as back propagation neural network (BPNN), radial basis function neural network with K-means cluster (RBF-K-means) and support vector regression (SVR), to evaluate the performance based on common statistic metrics. The simulation experiments have proved the integrated surface spark discharge features combined PSO-BPNN to improve the accuracy and stability of predicting leakage current comparing with other models. Therefore, the surface spark discharge data have strong correlation with the leakage current. A challenge facing all ubiquitous clinic recommendation systems is that patients often have difficulty articulating their requirements. To overcome this problem, a ubiquitous clinic recommendation mechanism was designed in this study by mining the clinic preferences of patients. Their preferences were defined using the weights in the ubiquitous clinic recommendation mechanism. An integer nonlinear programming problem was solved to tune the values of the weights on a rolling basis. In addition, since it may take a long time to adjust the values of weights to their asymptotic values, the back propagation network (BPN)-response surface method (RSM) method is applied to estimate the asymptotic values of weights. The proposed methodology was tested in a regional study. Experimental results indicated that the ubiquitous clinic recommendation system outperformed several existing methods in improving the successful recommendation rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To protect the environment and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reducing greenhouse gas emissions has been actively promoted by global governments. Thus, clean energy, such as wind power, has become a very important topic among global governments. However, accurately forecasting wind power output is not a straightforward task. The present study attempts to develop a fuzzy seasonal long short-term memory network (FSLSTM) that includes the fuzzy decomposition method and long short-term memory network (LSTM) to forecast a monthly wind power output dataset. LSTM technology has been successfully applied to forecasting problems, especially time series problems. This study first adopts the fuzzy seasonal index into the fuzzy LSTM model, which effectively extends the traditional LSTM technology. The FSLSTM, LSTM, autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), generalized regression neural network (GRNN), back propagation neural network (BPNN), least square support vector regression (LSSVR), and seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) models are then used to forecast monthly wind power output datasets in Taiwan. The empirical results indicate that FSLSTM can obtain better performance in terms of forecasting accuracy than the other methods.
