In today's economy, higher education institutions are struggling to maintain quality while functioning with fewer resources. For libraries, the economic situation is compounded by the impact of an information marketplace that is characterized by prices for resources that increase at 7 to 10% per year, and by near and actual monopolies controlling content. Added to the complexities of the marketplace are the demands of a faculty and student body that prefer individual actions to group efforts. These economic and social issues can become real barriers to innovation, quality improvement, and successful services for today's libraries. One way to combat the economic and social environment is by creating new and improved partnerships to leverage resources and share expertise in order to provide better services and access to wider collections. But forming partnerships is not easy. This paper will review the characteristics of successful partnership as developed by the Gallup Corporation and will show how these values can be used in the academic library environment to create opportunities for success. This review of thirty literature and Internet sources into teacher-librarian collaboration depicts five aspects of collaboration between university academic librarians and university teaching staff, sub-headed as: (i) foundations of teacher-librarian collaboration in basic user education. (ii) professionalism and mutual recognition, (iii) meeting student need through targeted library assignments, (iv) interpersonal win-king relationships and attitudes, and (v) cooperation in newly developing technologies. It is shown in the selected research and scholarly inputs considered that present levels of collaboration are inadequate and that there is much to be gained for all three principal stakeholders (librarians. teachers and students) through distinctive strategies for collaboration. Collaboration between librarians and archivists is a valuable way to share expertise and effort when instructing first-year English students on research skills they will need to succeed in college. It is also vital to orienting new faculty to library and archive resources for their scholarship and teaching, as well as encouraging students to value the library and archives resources and knowledge. The unique first-year English program at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) provides a constantly renewing pool of both new students and faculty members. This article identifies common themes in library and archive instruction and key elements of engaging first-year faculty and their students in becoming long-term patrons, in the midst of Georgia Tech's Library Next initiative, a re-imagining of the twenty-first century library and a major renovation of physical spaces.
