Chile, recognized as one of the world's most earthquake-prone nations, has gained valuable insights from significant earthquakes, such as those in 1985 and 2010, which have influenced updates to the nation's design codes. Although Chile's seismic design approach has been largely effective in recent earthquakes and demonstrated an "operational" performance level in most structures, performance-based design (PBD) methods have not yet been officially incorporated as valid approaches in the Chilean seismic design codes for buildings. However, in 2017, the Chilean Association on Seismology and Earthquake Engineering (ACHISINA) introduced a PBD approach, primarily for verification purposes, based on the Los Angeles Tall Buildings Structural Design Council (LATBSDC) framework. In this work, firstly, we provide an overview of Chile's PBD methodology, focusing on the thresholds for various performance levels. These levels are established through experimental and numerical analysis, correlating performance with permissible damage levels. The second part of the paper examines the seismic performance of a residential building, designed before the 2010 Maule earthquake and subsequently damaged, using Chile's PBD guidelines. This paper highlights formal and thematic expressions of discursive conflicts in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The House of the Seven Gables. It focuses on Hawthorne’s use of the “dialectical sentence,” a type of sentence attributed to German dialectical thinkers, principally Theodor Adorno. Voicing two contradictory views in the same breath, the dialectical sentence provides formal expression of irresolvable discursive conflicts. Hawthorne’s dialectical sentence serves as a suitable medium for expressing the conflict of interests between the Pyncheon and Maule families. The discursive conflicts are expressed through a set of binary terms, including Pyncheon/Maule, novel/romance, present/past, reason/rumor and science/ superstition. The first term in each binary usually serves for the Pyncheons and the second, the Maules. Thus, expressed in dialectical sentences, the narrative voice oscillates between an irony which reflects the values of the former family and an enthusiasm which reflects those of the latter. Coming down firmly on neither side of the conflict, and through avoiding reconciliation, the novel takes on a dialectical structure which keeps the resolution of the discursive conflicts, as a utopian element, for a time outside the novel’s timeframe. Catastrophic megaearthquakes (M > 8) occurring in the subduction zones are among the most devastating hazards on the planet. In this paper we discuss the seismic cycles of the megathrust earthquakes and propose a blockwise geomechanical model explaining certain features of the stress-deformation cycle revealed in recent decades from seismological and satellite geodesy (GNSS) observations. Starting with an overview of the so-called keyboard model of the seismic cycle by L. Lobkovsky, we outline mathematical formalism describing the motion of seismogenic block system assuming viscous rheology beneath and between the neighboring elastic blocks sitting on top of the subducting slab. By summarizing the GNSS-based evidence from our previous studies concerning the transient motions associated with the 2006–2007 Simushir earthquakes, 2010 Maule earthquake, and 2011 Tohoku earthquake, we demonstrate that those data support the keyboard model and reveal specific effect of the postseismic oceanward motion. However, since the seismogenic blocks in subduction systems are mostly located offshore, the direct analysis of GNSS-measured displacements and velocities is hardly possible in terms of the original keyboard model. Hence, the generalized two-segment keyboard model is introduced, containing both frontal offshore blocks and rear onshore blocks, which allows for direct interpretation of the onshore-collected GNSS data. We present a numerical computation scheme and a series of simulated data, which exhibits the consistency with measured motions and enables estimating the seismic cycle characteristics, important for the long-term earthquake forecasting. Several magnetic measurements and theoretical developments from different research groups have shown certain relationships with worldwide geological processes. Secular variation in geomagnetic cutoff rigidity, magnetic frequencies, or magnetic anomalies have been linked with spatial properties of active convergent tectonic margins or earthquake occurrences during recent years. These include the rise in similar fundamental frequencies in the range of microhertz before the Maule 2010, Tōhoku 2011, and Sumatra–Andaman 2004 earthquakes and the dramatic rise in the cumulative number of magnetic anomalous peaks before several earthquakes such as Nepal 2015 and Mexico (Puebla) 2017. Currently, all of these measurements have been physically explained by the microcrack generation due to uniaxial stress change in rock experiments. The basic physics of these experiments have been used to describe the lithospheric behavior in the context of the seismo-electromagnetic theory. Due to the dramatic increase in experimental evidence, physical mechanisms, and the theoretical framework, this paper analyzes vertical magnetic behavior close to the three latest main earthquakes in Chile: Maule 2010 (Mw 8.8), Iquique 2014 (Mw 8.2), and Illapel 2015 (Mw 8.3). The fast Fourier transform (FFT), wavelet transform, and daily cumulative number of anomalies methods were used during quiet space weather time during 1 year before and after each earthquake in order to filter space influence. The FFT method confirms the rise in the power spectral density in the millihertz range 1 month before each earthquake, which decreases to lower values some months after earthquake occurrence. The cumulative anomaly method exhibited an increase prior to each Chilean earthquake (50–90 d prior to earthquakes) similar to those found for Nepal 2015 and Mexico 2017. The wavelet analyses also show similar properties to FFT analysis. However, the lack of physics-based constraints in the wavelet analysis does not allow conclusions that are as strong as those made by FFT and cumulative methods. By using these results and previous research, it could be stated that these magnetic features could give seismic information about impending events. Additionally, these results could be related to the lithosphere–atmosphere–ionosphere coupling (LAIC effect) and the growth of microcracks and electrification in rocks described by the seismo-electromagnetic theory. Purpose: This paper examines disaster capitalism in Chile, that is, the relationships between disasters and neoliberalism. It looks at two post-disaster dimensions: disasters as windows of opportunity to introduce political reforms and disasters as occasions for the corporate class to capitalize on such disasters. Design/methodology/approach: Two indices, disaster capitalism (DC) and post-disaster private involvement (PDPI), are proposed for cross-case analysis. They are based on legal records, institutional reports and economic data. The DC assesses the introduction of reforms following disasters, while PDPI evaluates the share of public-private funding used for recovery. Both indices are applied here to two disasters in Chile: the 2010 Maule earthquake, and the 2008 Chaitén volcanic eruption. Findings: Results show that the highly neoliberal Chilean context leaves limited space for new neoliberal reforms. Although recovery is implemented predominantly through the private sector, the state still assumes greater responsibility for recovery costs. Results also detect poor levels of participation from the private sector in accounting their efforts and making them publicly available. Likewise, the research suggests that neoliberal reforms become more likely after disasters. However, the preexisting politico-economic context matters. Finally, there is clearly a need for data systematization in post-disaster recovery. Originality/value: In the Chilean context, the indices proved beneficial as a strategy for data collection and a method for scrutinizing the implications of neoliberal policy implemented in the wake of disasters, as well as in evaluating the role of the corporate class during recovery. More than half of all the people in the world now live in dense urban centres. The rapid expansion of cities, particularly in low-income nations, has enabled the economic and social development of millions of people. However, many of these cities are located near active tectonic faults that have not produced an earthquake in recent memory, raising the risk of losing hard-earned progress through a devastating earthquake. In this paper we explore the possible impact that earthquakes can have on the city of Santiago in Chile from various potential near-field and distant earthquake sources. We use high-resolution stereo satellite imagery and imagery-derived digital elevation models to accurately map the trace of the San Ramón Fault, a recently recognised active fault located along the eastern margins of the city. We use scenario-based seismic-risk analysis to compare and contrast the estimated damage and losses to the city from several potential earthquake sources and one past event, comprising (i) rupture of the San Ramón Fault, (ii) a hypothesised buried shallow fault beneath the centre of the city, (iii) a deep intra-slab fault, and (iv) the 2010 Mw 8.8 Maule earthquake. We find that there is a strong magnitude–distance trade-off in terms of damage and losses to the city, with smaller magnitude earthquakes in the magnitude range of 6–7.5 on more local faults producing 9 to 17 times more damage to the city and estimated fatalities compared to the great magnitude 8+ earthquakes located offshore in the subduction zone. Our calculations for this part of Chile show that unreinforced-masonry structures are the most vulnerable to these types of earthquake shaking. We identify particularly vulnerable districts, such as Ñuñoa, Santiago, and Providencia, where targeted retrofitting campaigns would be most effective at reducing potential economic and human losses. Due to the potency of near-field earthquake sources demonstrated here, our work highlights the importance of also identifying and considering proximal minor active faults for cities in seismic zones globally in addition to the more major and distant large fault zones that are typically focussed on in the assessment of hazard. The time at which climate change signal can be clearly distinguished from noise is known as time of emergence (ToE) and is typically detected by a general circulation model (GCM) signal-to-noise ratio exceeding a certain threshold. ToE is commonly estimated at large scales from GCMs, although management decisions and adaptation strategies are implemented locally. This paper proposes a methodology to estimate ToE for both precipitation and temperature at local scales (i.e., river basin). The methodology considers local climatic conditions and unbiased GCM projections to estimate ToE by using the statistical power to find when the climate significantly differs from the historical one. The method suggests that ToE for temperature already occurred in three Chilean basins (Limarí, Maipo, and Maule). However, in terms of precipitation, an earlier ToE is clearly identified for the Maule basin, indicating that risk assessment and adaptation measures should be implemented first in this basin. Natural hazards such as earthquakes, floods, or wildfires pose a serious threat to road infrastructure. Especially in emergency situations, the society depends on the road infrastructure to maintain its functionality in terms of evacuation and accessibility to emergency facilities. In this paper, we develop a generic, multi-scale concept to analyze the accessibility to emergency facilities in critical road infrastructure for natural disaster scenarios. We follow a modular approach: The basic module evaluates the accessibility of emergency facilities by calculating an accessibility index. Other modules enable the calculation of a grid-based index and the generation of a degraded network based on a natural disaster scenario. OpenStreetMap serves as a free-to-use and worldwide available database for the road network and the emergency facility location. The concept is applied exemplarily for two wildfire scenarios of different geographic scales: the January 2017 Wildfires in the BioBío and Maule region located in central Chile and the June 2017 Wildfires in central Portugal. An impact analysis of the wildfires on the accessibility of emergency facilities is performed and evaluated. As a result, the concept provides a valuable and data-sparse decision aid tool for regional planners and disaster control. It can be used in different stages of the disaster risk management cycle. In the mitigation and preparation phase, places with poor accessibility can be identified. In the short-term response phase after a disaster, the quick identification of critical and disconnected road network parts assists disaster control in planning a possible reaction strategy. A very large coseismic displacement (≈304 cm) was recorded at the city of Concepción during the moment magnitude (Mw) 8·8 Offshore Maule, Chile earthquake of 27 February 2010. The Alto Rio building, a 15-storey reinforced concrete structure with two underground levels, experienced a global overturning collapse, resulting in the death of eight of its occupants. Ever since, a lingering question has preoccupied the minds of structural engineers and earth scientists: Did the large coseismic displacement cause the overturning collapse of this building? The construction of fuel moisture content (FMC) maps, as well as temperature, terrain topography, and wind speed maps, are essential for the development of fire susceptibility models in forested areas. Moisture distribution in tree canopies requires exploration and a three-dimensional representation. This paper presents the construction of FMC maps expressed as vegetation indices (VIs) in a point cloud. Multispectral images were captured by a camera mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle to create the point cloud. VIs were estimated in the points that belonged to the forest canopy. To classify the canopy points, we a combination of filtering of ground points and thresholding of VIs was evaluated. On such canopy points, random forest (RF), kernel ridge regression (KRR), and Gaussian process retrieval (GPR) regressors were investigated to estimate twelve VIs related to FMC. The input set of the models consisted of the points representing five wavelengths provided by the multispectral camera. The ground truth of VIs was obtained using a spectrometer. The study area was a 1 ha forest of Pinus radiata in the Maule Region, Chile. The results demonstrated that combining ground filtering and VIs thresholding for canopy points segmentation achieved a precision of 93.27%, recall of 95.65%, F1 score of 90.12%, and accuracy of 87.82%. Furthermore, the recovery of the VIs using GPR achieved a root mean square error of 0.175 and a coefficient of determination of 0.18. According to the correlation coefficient, GPR was able to recover eleven of the twelve VIs, KRR recovered three, and RF failed to recover any. Introduction: In the field of medical anthropology, particularly from the practices of medical care in a situated context, the text discusses how state care services under the "National Child Health Programme" implemented by nursing professionals in Chile transmit values and expectations that could be transformed into devices of acceptance to the social body for migrant mothers of African descent who come with their children to health centres. Methods: The Methodology employed in this study was devised through a case study in the commune of Talca, within the Maule region, utilizing semistructured interviews with nurses who work within the Programme, as well as open interviews and thematic workshops with migrant women users of the Programme. Results: The results point to the valuation of the programme by the women, who identify it as an instance of providing and receiving care for their children; they also recognise that they are judged by their caregivers for not "correctly" following the instructions given to them with their children living in Chile or for exercising transnational maternity. On the other hand, nursing professionals revealed racial and class prejudices about women of African descent, especially Haitian women. Discussion: It is suggested that this programme, recognized regionally as an effective assistance and care policy in the fight against infant mortality and morbidity, becomes an acculturation device for migrant mothers and their children born in Chile. It is expected that both mothers and children adhere to the program's guidelines, resulting in similar behaviours and attitudes as those of Chilean mothers. This generates few instances of learning and appreciation of the native cultures of the new Chilean infants and reveals that categories of differences such as ethno-racial, gender, and migratory status are articulated in the nurses' health practices, emphasising the mandate to follow the instructions of migrant mothers and their children. Abstract—For the first time, we present a rupture surface model of the 2010 Maule earthquake, Chile, based on the combination of satellite geodesy, InSAR, and satellite gravimetry data. The regularization method used for constructing the model allowed us to find a uniform displacement field on rupture surface provided that a slip rake is close to a given one. On average, the displacements on the rupture surface are about 5 m with a maximum displacement of 13.1 m. The rupture zone extends south of the Arauco Peninsula and reaches a depth of 42 km along the plate surface. Using the constructed seismic rupture model, we have modeled the process of viscoelastic relaxation of stresses that emerged in the lithosphere and upper mantle as a result of the earthquake in order to estimate the contribution of this process in the observed postseismic displacements. Surface displacement velocities mainly depend on the viscosity value adopted for the asthenosphere. The comparison of the calculated and measured displacements at low viscosity of the asthenosphere shows that when the displacements are measured far from rupture surface as it is the case with the ocean–ocean subduction zone earthquakes, the observed displacements can be explained by the process of viscoelastic relaxation with a low viscosity of the asthenosphere. In the cases when there are data on the displacements above rupture surface, e.g., for the 2010 Maule earthquake, explaining the observed displacements by stress relaxation process in the near zone of the rupture is not possible at any viscosity: the displacements substantially differ both in amplitude and direction. At the same time, the postseismic creep models fairly well agree with the entire set of the existing data. Therefore, there is no need to accept the hypothesis of a low-viscous asthenosphere in the region of the 2010 Maule earthquake. Previously, we arrived at the similar conclusion considering the modeling results for the Sumatran earthquake of 2004, Simushir earthquakes of 2006, and a number of other large earthquakes in the subduction zones. The simplification of the landscape as a consequence of the decrease in biodiversity and the adoption of monoculture production systems has led to a significant decrease in the provision of ecosystem services in the territory. The conversion of agroecosystems requires the adoption of agroecological techniques, which aim to design the agroecosystem as an integrated part of a vegetation matrix of the landscape, interconnecting the different production systems with the agricultural landscape. In order to measure the degree of connectivity of agroecosystems with the landscape, we used the Main Agroecological Structure (MAS) method, which was applied to 36 small agroecosystems of vegetable, livestock and fruit producers, which generally presented a low degree of connectivity. This allows us to evaluate the potential of these systems for agroecological transition, since being present in a moderately complex agricultural landscape gives important advantages over a more simplified system, allowing these producers to dispense with the use of many energy subsidies. This evaluation allows a first approximation to the quantification of the landscape matrix and will allow a comparison between agroecosystems or an evaluation of the evolution of the MAS over time. This study uses a water-food-energy nexus model, which connects water-based productive activities and allocation policies, to simulate water resources management strategies for adapting the Maule Basin in Chile to climate change impacts. Two strategies are considered: introducing linear hedging rules to a reservoir and establishing adaptative water rights linked to irrigation efficiency of crops in the area. The simulations are run over 14 different climatic scenarios that project different water availability conditions. A multiobjective optimization of environmental, agricultural, and energy outcome indicators is conducted to generate noninferior portfolios that combine the strategies proposed. Simulation results, though limited to a deterministic approach and pessimistic climate scenarios, show that 79 out of the 84 combinations of objective-scenarios increase their performance because of the strategies, with notable increases in agricultural resilience (64%), outflow (92%), and total benefits (26%). We find considerable trade-offs between the food/energy production and water outflow, alongside agricultural vulnerability and resilience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Charles Darwin and Robert FitzRoy documented coseismic coastal uplift associated with the great 1835 Chile earthquake (M > 8.5) at Isla Santa María. In 2010, another similar earthquake (Mw 8.8) uplifted the island, ending the seismic cycle. The 2‐m uplift in 2010 caused major geomorphic and sedimentologic changes to the island's sandy beaches. Understanding the processes governing these changes requires pre‐ and post‐earthquake measurements to differentiate the effects of abrupt coseismic uplift from seasonal, annual, and decadal‐scale signals. Here, we combine spatial analysis of aerial imagery, field geophysics, wind and wave models to quantify geomorphic changes between 1941 and 2021 along the main beach. During the late interseismic phase (1941–2010), a ridge‐runnel system was formed and then buried by a frontal dune. Because of uplift in 2010, the shoreline prograded ~20 m, the uplifted berm was abandoned, and a new seaward berm was built. In the following decade, the abandoned berm was eroded by widening of the backshore as the shoreline and dune advanced seaward. Over the surveyed eight decades, the shoreline prograded continuously, increasing from <1 m/year to up to 3–5 m/year after the earthquake. We infer that these changes were caused by a sedimentary disequilibrium driven by variations in relative sea level, moving formerly passive sands from eroding cliffs and marine depths into the coastal sedimentary system, thus promoting long and cross‐shore sediment transport and, utterly, accretion. This article presents the seismotectonic consequences of the strong Maule earthquake in Chile, which occurred on February 27, 2010 at Mw = 8.8. The consequences are considered as a manifestation of a large-scale fragment of the general seismotectonic process on the western edge of the South American plate (Chilean sector). Our study shows that manifestations of postseismic processes of the Maule earthquake cover a much larger area compared to the epicentral zone of the aftershocks. Based on the comparison of the results of numerical modeling of the stress–strain state before and after the earthquake, seismological, geodetic, and satellite data, an alternative model of the development of the seismotectonic process in the Chilean sector of the South American plate was proposed. Stress–strain modeling was performed by the finite-element method. The source of the Maule earthquake, at a depth of 33 km, falls into the region of relatively high values of compression stresses and positive maximum shear stresses. It was shown that other strong earthquakes of the Chilean sector in the interval of depths from 20 to 50 km are caused by high concentration of tectonic stresses in the region of transition from oceanic to continental lithosphere. Within the framework of the proposed model of the seismotectonic process ruptures weaken the contact between the oceanic and continental lithosphere after strong earthquakes. Abrupt sinking of the continental lithosphere into the mantle causes an increase in viscous melt pressure, promotes penetration into mega-cracks, and rises to the surface, causing subsequent volcanic eruptions. The results obtained in comparison with the coseismic consequences of earthquakes do not contradict these results of numerical modeling and give new insights into the structure of the lithosphere in the continent‒ocean transition zone and the development of the seismotectonic process. Forest landscapes dominated by commercial plantations are managed using intensive silvicultural schemes that involve a harvesting-replanting cycle, with clearcutting being one of the most used harvesting methods. Clearcutting has several negative effects, both biotic and abiotic, and to control them, many countries have established exclusion periods and restrictions regarding the amount and distribution of clearcutting areas at landscape level. However, Chile still does not have such restrictions. The main purpose of the study was to analyse forest area trends and to identify the spatiotemporal scales at which clustering of clearcutting areas occurred, between 1999 and 2017. The study area was the coastal zone of the Region of Maule, Chile, dominated by Monterey pine (Pinus radiate D. Don) plantations. We used Landsat 5, 7 and 8 to produce yearly land cover maps to differentiate clearcutting areas from other classes. By using Emerging Hot Spot Analysis, we calculated the spatiotemporal trends of these clearcut areas. We found that harvest clusters have an oscillatory behaviour, ranging from Hot to Cold Spots over the time with an average size of 46.8 km2 and being active for 2 years (±1.7). Our results support the claim to introduce new regulations to the current Chilean legislation regarding explicit exclusion periods and multiscale forest management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Average speed is crucial for calculating link travel time to find the fastest path in a road network. However, readily available data sources like OpenStreetMap (OSM) often lack information about the average speed of a road. However, OSM contains other road information which enables an estimation of average speed in rural regions. In this paper, we develop a Fuzzy Framework for Speed Estimation (Fuzzy-FSE) that employs fuzzy control to estimate average speed based on the parameters road class, road slope, road surface and link length. The OSM road network and, optionally, a digital elevation model (DEM) serve as free-to-use and worldwide available input data. The Fuzzy-FSE consists of two parts: (a) a rule and knowledge base which decides on the output membership functions and (b) multiple Fuzzy Control Systems which calculate the output average speeds. The Fuzzy-FSE is applied exemplary and evaluated for the BioBío and Maule region in central Chile and for the north of New South Wales in Australia. Results demonstrate that, even using only OSM data, the Fuzzy-FSE performs better than existing methods such as fixed speed profiles. Compared to these methods, the Fuzzy-FSE improves the speed estimation between 2% to 12%. In future work, we will investigate the potential of data-driven machine learning methods to estimate average speed. The analysis of seismotectonic deformations associated with the seismogenic activation of the Chilean subduction zone at the beginning of the 21st century is reported. The constructed models of source zones of the three strongest (M ≥ 8) earthquakes that occurred in the Chilean subduction zone in 2010, 2014, and 2015 are presented. A comparative analysis of the stress release during these events was carried out. Over the last decade, three major subduction earthquakes, Maule M w 8.8 (2010), Illapel M w 8.3 (2015) and Iquique M w 8.1 (2014), occurred in Chile and generated significant post-seismic deformations. These large scale and long lasting deformations can be quantified with modern GNSS precise positioning and highlight viscoelastic processes in the asthenosphere. Here, we calculate the ratios of cumulative post-seismic displacements after 5 yr over the coseismic offsets. We find that at any distance from the trench, ratios are similar for the three earthquakes despite their different magnitudes which imply induced stresses that are more than one order of magnitude apart. This observation suggests that the post-seismic deformation is related to the same effective viscosity for the three earthquakes, indicating Newtonian rheology, rather than power-law rheology in the asthenosphere. This work presents a free new database designed from a real industrial process to recognize, identify, and classify the quality of the red raspberry accurately, automatically, and in real time. Raspberry trays with recently harvested fresh fruit enter the industry's selection and quality control process to be categorized and subsequently their purchase price is determined. This selection is carried out from a sample of a complete batch to evaluate the quality of the raspberry. This database aims to solve one of the major problems in the industry: evaluating the largest amount of fruit possible and not a single sample. This major dataset enables researchers in various disciplines to develop practical machine-learning (ML) algorithms to improve red raspberry quality in the industry, by identifying different diseases and defects in the fruit, and by overcoming limitations by increasing the performance detection rate accuracy and reducing computation time. This database is made up of two packages and can be downloaded free from the Laboratory of Technological Research in Pattern Recognition repository at the Catholic University of the Maule. The RGB image package contains 286 raw original images with a resolution of 3948 × 2748 pixels from raspberry trays acquired during a typical process in the industry. Furthermore, the labeled images are available with the annotations for two diseases (86 albinism labels and 164 fungus rust labels) and two defects (115 over-ripeness labels, and 244 peduncle labels). The MATLAB code package contains three well-known ML methodological approaches, which can be used to classify and detect the quality of red raspberries. Two are statistical-based learning methods for feature extraction coupled with a conventional artificial neural network (ANN) as a classifier and detector. The first method uses four predictive learning from descriptive statistical measures, such as variance, standard deviation, mean, and median. The second method uses three predictive learning from a statistical model based on the generalized extreme value distribution parameters, such as location, scale, and shape. The third ML approach uses a convolution neural network based on a pre-trained fastest region approach (Faster R-CNN) that extracts its features directly from images to classify and detect fruit quality. The classification performance metric was assessed in terms of true and false positive rates, and accuracy. On average, for all types of raspberries studied, the following accuracies were achieved: Faster R-CNN 91.2%, descriptive statistics 81%, and generalized extreme value 84.5%. These performance metrics were compared to manual data annotations by industry quality control staff, accomplishing the parameters and standards of agribusiness. During recent decades, the South-Central part of Chile has shown strong vulnerability due to the effects of land use change (LUC). The interaction of these changes with local hydrology has not been adequately investigated and is poorly understood, especially in mountainous areas under irrigated agriculture. We applied the SWAT + agrohydrological model to study the effects of LUC on hydrological fluxes in the Longaví catchment, Maule region, South-Central Chile. Land use maps (LUMs) from 1997, 2009, and 2016 were used in conjunction with a 41-year (1979–2019) hydro-meteorological series of daily observations as forcing data. The dominant changes in land use during the study period relate to agriculture, shrublands, forestry of exotic species, and urban sprawl. First, the LUM of 1997 was used for model setup, sensitivity analysis, calibration, and validation. Second, the impact of LUC documented through LUMs 2009 and 2016 was analyzed. Our analysis clearly reveals that the overall water balance and internal moisture redistribution in the Longaví catchment have been considerably affected by decreases in precipitation, changes in land use and water use practices. Unless a comprehensive regulatory system is introduced that addresses current climatic conditions and territorial use, it is likely that the decrease in water resources will persist and worsen through climate changes. Inversions of geodetic data are regularly used to estimate interseismic locking in subduction zones. However, the ill‐posed nature of these problems motivates us to include prior information, physically consistent with processes of the subduction seismic cycle. To deal with model instabilities, we present an inversion method to estimate both plate‐locking and model uncertainties by inverting Global Navigation Satellite System derived velocities based on a Bayesian model selection scheme. Our method allows us to impose positivity constraints via a multivariate folded‐normal distribution, with a specified covariance matrix. Model spatial correlations are explored and ranked to find models that best explain the observed data and for a better understanding of locking models. This approach searches for hyperparameters of the prior joint multivariate probability density function (PDF) of model parameters that minimize the Akaike Bayesian Information Criterion (ABIC). To validate our approach, we invert synthetic displacements from analytic models, yielding satisfactory results. We then apply the method to estimate the plate‐locking in Central Chile (28°–39°S) and its relation to the coseismic slip distribution of earthquakes with magnitudes Mw > 8.0, on the subduction zone since 2010. We also search among different prior PDFs for a single ductile‐fragile limit depth. Our results confirms a spatial correlation between locked asperities and the 2010 Mw 8.8 Maule and 2015 Mw 8.3 Illapel earthquake rupture zones. The robustness of our locking model shows potential to improve future seismic and tsunami hazard estimations. Plain Language Summary: Subduction zones accumulate large stresses between plate interface unions, which induce surface deformations, measurable by Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers. We use these GPS surface deformation rate data to infer the level of locking on subduction zones, namely, to infer the areas with highest and lowest amounts of accumulated stress. But, locking model solutions are not unique, due to several issues, such as long distances between stations and plate interface, as well as usually poor instrumental coverage and/or lack of GPS stations. We develop a method that determines the best locking model from a family of possible solutions, based on the resolution power the data can provide, penalizing overcomplicated locking models that cannot be explained by the data. The family of potential solutions include physical constraints, to obtain more plausible locking models. Our method estimates the uncertainty of our models, which provides the degree of confidence of the family of solutions. Our method has the advantage of ranking quantitatively each hypothesis, just from observations. We apply our approach to estimate locking on the Central Chile subduction segment, where big earthquakes have occurred (e.g., 2010 Maule and 2015 Illapel earthqaukes). We observe that our locking model peaks correlate well with areas where past earthquakes ruptured. Research on local environmental struggles as a politicisation process opens space to reflect on the contributions of socio-ecological resistance movements toward systemic sustainability governance. This article seeks to empirically test Sebastien's theoretical and methodological framework on enlightening resistance through four case studies from Chile, while additionally exploring the capacity of politically proactive movements to push socio-ecological change beyond lifeworld sustainability toward systemic sustainability. This study aims to inquire into the usefulness of the enlightening resistance framework as a contribution to a larger theoretical effort to shed light on the blockers and enablers of political action towards transformative social change. Drawing on both primary and secondary data, and applying interpretive content-based analysis on the variables of the enlightening resistance framework for each case, our study finds a dull transition happening from resistance to proactive-type movements, yet challenging certain aspects of Sebastien's thesis. While the movements are partially successful in reframing discourses about the territory, they do not translate into proposals capable of outcompeting the resisted projects, nor into any change in relevant decision-making processes. In addition, we introduce a hypothesis about the adequacy of this framework in socio-political and socio-economic contexts characterised by a disempowered civil society and a type of "neoliberal" sustainability governance favouring market actors as well as experts - both technical and legal -, while silencing local actors. Also, the capacity of proactivetype movements to transcend the boundaries of lifeworld sustainability has been shown to be limited because of a structural decoupling of the latter from system sustainability. In this paper we explore obsidian conveyance in the Diamante Valley, in northwestern Patagonia, Argentina. Obsidian is the third most-common toolstone used in the Diamante Valley after basalts and local cryptocrystallines. Obsidian artifacts are predominantly projectile points and bifaces, with few cores and early-stage reduction debris. To explain these patterns, we conducted XRF sourcing and technological analysis of 177 obsidian artifacts collected there. We also conducted a GIS-based least cost path analysis to assess the costs of conveying obsidian from sources to sites in the Diamante watershed. We found that hunter-gatherers used Las Cargas as the principal obsidian source, followed by Maule 1 and 2, El Peceño, and Coche Quemado. The nearest source, Laguna del Diamante, was the least used. These data, combined with an analysis of the ways cores, formed tools, and debitage types were conveyed and ultimately deposited at sites in the Diamante watershed, suggest a late Holocene pattern of highland-oriented indirect access, implying highland village sites likely served as nodes in a regional and extraregional exchange network focused not only on obsidian but also on other goods, information, and social obligations. English walnut (Juglans regia) has become an important crop in Chile, representing 11.5% of the total area of fruit trees, surpassed only by grapevine. As the Chilean walnut industry rapidly expands, young orchards are at risk from the emergence of new fungal diseases. Botryosphaeriaceae and Diaporthaceae fungi have been recognized as main causes of wood diseases in walnut, with symptoms of dieback, canker, and blight. In winter 2017, samples were collected from different orchards in Valparaíso and Maule regions. Fungal isolates recovered were cultured, characterized morphologically, and identified using DNA sequence analyses. Three species (Neofusicoccum parvum, Diplodia mutila, Diplodia seriata) were characterized in Botryosphaeriaceae and two (Diaporthe cynaroidis, Diaporthe australafricana) in Diaporthaceae. Pathogenicity tests showed that N. parvum was the most aggressive species to walnut. This study confirmed the presence of pathogenic Botryosphaeriaceae and Diaporthaceae in J. regia that should be considered an increasing risk for the growing Chilean walnut industry. • A new self-centering shear key geometry is proposed that eliminates residual displacements of the superstructure, using only the structure's own weight, geometry and conventional bearing pads to generate the required restoring force. • The proposed solution is simply a change in the kinematics of the bridge allowing superstructure's self-centering. • The new self-centering technique is used to analyze a typical Chilean bridge using a set of records classified by soil types, considering the three translational components of the ground motion components. The results indicate that the technique is feasible, but care needs to be taken in accounting for an increase in forces in the substructure. • The proposed shear key concept does not need additional devices such seismic isolators or energy dissipation elements. With a simple change of the geometry, the elimination of the residual displacements ensures the superstructure's self-centering behavior. Shear keys are elements in bridges designed to prevent or limit transverse unseating, rotation, and/or collapse of the superstructure responding to strong-intensity earthquake input ground motion, as well as to absorb breaking and various self equilibrating forces. During the 2010 Maule earthquake, Chile's highway infrastructure was seriously impacted. Shear key failures were endemic and did not function as intended. As a result, some bridges experienced partial or complete collapse. Even when the shear keys appeared to have worked, the superstructure exhibited large offsets, which required expensive repairs. An expensive retrofit of undamaged bridges was also carried out as a result of the inadequate response of the bridge infrastructure. This paper addresses the behavioral issues of bridges designed incorporating conventional shear keys and proposes an innovative self-centering concept that eliminates residual displacements in the superstructure. The self-centering shear key concept, as it will be termed here, makes use of the bridge self-weight as a restoring force to ensure self-centering. This concept proposal takes advantage of the kinematics of the bridge. The self-centering shear key concept was validated for a typical Chilean bridge via an extensive study that made use of nonlinear time history analyses. The results indicate that the increase in seismic demand on the substructure is small enough to maintain the bridge base structure in the elastic range while eliminating any residual displacements in the superstructure. Separating tsunamigenic variations in geomagnetic field measurements in the presence of more dominant magnetic variations by magnetospheric and ionospheric currents is a challenging task. The purpose of this article is to survey the tsunamigenic variations in the vertical component (Z) and the horizontal component (H) of the geomagnetic field using four spatiotemporal methods. Spatiotemporal analysis has shown enormous potential and efficiency in retrieving tsunamigenic contributions from geomagnetic field measurements. We select the Maule (2010) tsunami event on the west coast of Chile and examine the geomagnetic measurements from 13 ground magnetometers scattered in the Pacific Ocean covering a wide area from Chile, crossing the Pacific Ocean to Japan. The tsunamigenic magnetic disturbances are possibly due to two types of contributions, one arising from direct ocean motion and the other from atmospheric motion, both associated with tsunami forcing. Moreover, even though the tsunami waves decrease considerably with increasing epicentral distance, the tsunamigenic contributions are retrieved from a magnetic observatory in Australia (∼ 13,000 km radial distance from the epicenter). These results suggest that various types of tsunamigenic disturbances can be identified well from the integrated analysis framework presented in this work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Subduction zones are associated with significant seismic hazards around the world and determining the future locations of large earthquakes within these systems is a perpetual challenge of the Earth sciences. This study presents back-projection results from the 2021 M w 7.1 Fukushima earthquake which show that the rupture area of this event filled a previously identified coseismic gap within the rupture area of the 2011 M w 9.1 Tohoku-oki earthquake. These results, combined with observations of a similar coseismic gap from the 2010 M w 8.8 Maule, Chile earthquake that was subsequently filled by a M w 7.1 aftershock, demonstrate that future assessments of seismic hazards following giant earthquakes should include the identification of coseismic gaps left within main shock rupture areas. Since the 'culture of poverty' studies in the 1960s, temporal structures have become essential for understanding poverty and its reproduction. Most studies in this field have characterised poverty by a strong presentism, a neglect of the future, and a lack of agency in shaping the course of life. This article provides a novel approach to make sense of the intersection between time and poverty by empirically analysing the work that the poor perform to distinguish, link and valuate their past, present and future and make sense of their lives as stories of social mobility. Drawing on the biographical narratives of poor men and women from urban Santiago and rural Maule in Chile, we argue that the temporal structures of the poor intertwine a pragmatic presentism with the aspiration of social mobility through the sacrificial structure of an extended self. These findings reveal that the poor are not passive subjects of destiny but agents of a dynamic and open-ended story, and that their biographies are structured not only by the fatalism of the repetition of the past but also by a dramatic struggle for the future. A key hypothesis in epidemiological studies is that time to disease exposure provides relevant information to be considered in statistical models. However, the initiation time of a particular condition is usually unknown. Therefore, we developed a multiple imputation methodology for the age at onset of a particular condition, which is supported by incidence data from different sources of information. We introduced and illustrated such a methodology using simulated data in order to examine the performance of our proposal. Then, we analyzed the association of gallstones and fatty liver disease in the Maule Cohort, a Chilean study of chronic diseases, using participants' risk factors and six sources of information for the imputation of the age-occurrence of gallstones. Simulated studies showed that an increase in the proportion of imputed data does not affect the quality of the estimated coefficients associated with fully observed variables, while the imputed variable slowly reduces its effect. For the Chilean study, the categorized exposure time to gallstones is a significant variable, in which participants who had short and long exposure have, respectively, 26.2% and 29.1% higher chance of getting a fatty liver disease than non-exposed ones. In conclusion, our multiple imputation approach proved to be quite robust both in the linear/logistic regression simulation studies and in the real application, showing the great potential of this methodology. • Inelastic finite element model of a reinforced concrete wall building slice. • Earthquake and tsunami loadings in sequence applied to the building model. • The tsunami capacity is sensitive to the Froude number. • The tsunami capacity is only affected by severe previous earthquake damage. This paper investigates the behavior of a typical Chilean reinforced concrete wall building under sequential earthquake and tsunami actions using a double pushover analysis approach. A real concrete wall structure that was damaged after the M w = 8.8 2010 Maule earthquake is considered as a case study building and a simplified nonlinear finite element model of a fictitious slice of the building is subjected to earthquake and tsunami loading in sequence. The analysis of the building under these loadings consists of three stages: the structure is first subjected to seismic loading by means of a pushover analysis until a specific damage state is reached; then a pushover with the same load pattern but in the opposite direction is applied until the shear at the base is zero; and finally, the building is subjected to tsunami loading by means of a variable depth pushover analysis until the maximum capacity is reached. Different tsunami load cases are considered in this study, varying the Froude number and the direction of the tsunami loading. The results show that the tsunami response of the building is mainly dependent on the Froude number of the tsunami flow; however, when the seismic damage is severe, the tsunami capacity of the building is found to be reduced. This is more likely to occur when the effect of the tsunami increases the damage previously induced by the earthquake in the same direction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two adjacent segments of the Chile margin exhibit significant differences in earthquake magnitude and rupture extents during the 1960 Valdivia and 2010 Maule earthquakes. We use the discrete element method (DEM) to simulate the upper plate as having an inner and outer wedge defined by different frictional domains along the décollement. We find that outer wedge width strongly influences coseismic slip distributions. We use the published peak slip magnitudes to pick best fit slip distributions and compare our models to geophysical constraints on outer wedge widths for the margins. We obtain reasonable fits to published slip distributions for the 2010 Maule rupture. Our best‐fit slip distribution for the 1960 Valdivia earthquake suggests that peak slip occurred close to the trench, differing from published models but being supported by new seismic interpretations along this margin. Finally, we also demonstrate that frictional conditions beneath the outer wedge can affect the coseismic slip distributions. Plain Language Summary: The south‐central Chilean margin is host to the Mw 9.5 1960 Valdivia earthquake and the Mw 8.8 2010 Maule earthquake. Although their earthquake rupture segments are adjacent and partially overlap, the resulting earthquakes are significantly different. We use the DEM to explore the controls on these differences. We use assemblages of discrete particles to simulate wedges that define the upper plate in two dimensions. Each wedge is partitioned into a strong inner wedge, capable of supporting large elastic strains that can be released during earthquakes, and a lower strength outer wedge that resists earthquake rupture. We simulate earthquake unloading by instantaneously reducing the basal friction beneath the inner wedge for a range of relative widths of the outer wedge. The results yield a suite of slip distributions that can be compared with natural earthquake ruptures, including the Chilean events as well as the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. The best‐fit slip distributions also provide constraints on the internal structure of the upper plate, which compares well to the interpreted structures in all three settings. Our simulations lead us to conclude that the 1960 Valdivia earthquake ruptured to the toe of the wedge, which differs from some previous interpretations. The ever-increasing data from continues geodetic networks has allowed to reveal first-order spatial relations between pre-seismic highly locked zones on the interface and regions of large coseismic slip. Here we use a distribution of locking degree and recurrence of historical earthquakes along the Chilean subduction zone to estimate the slip deficit accumulated since previous tsunamigenic earthquakes and use these constrains to simulate tsumani signals. We generate tsunami models for the recent five major tsunamigenic earthquakes in Chile during the last decade: Maule (2010), Pisagua (2014), Illapel (2015), Melinka (2016) and Valparaiso (2017). Results were compared with tsunami records to evaluate the use of locking degree as an estimate of displacement of future earthquakes and as a tool for tsunami hazard assessment. Our tsunami simulations for the Maule (2010) and Illapel (2015), earthquakes that filled a seismic gap, reproduce well the tsunami observations, for the case of Pisagua (2014), Valparaiso (2016) and Melinka (2017) although it exists a correspondence in the areas of greater degree of locking with the coseismic slip, there is also an imbalance between the energy accumulated and released in the interseismic period considered according to the historical seismicity. This indicate that the rupture of small asperities (areas that release high slip during earthquakes) may have a complex pattern of recurrence and do not fully affect a locked patch. Locking-derived tsunami scenarios represent well tsunami observations of earthquakes that ruptured a locked seismic gap, and they can be used in addition to the actual methodologies to improve the estimation of tsunami hazard. Seismicity along subduction interfaces is usually dominated by large main-shock–aftershock sequences indicative of a continuum distribution of highly coupled large asperities. In the past decades, however, the increased resolution of seismic catalogues at some subduction zone seems to indicate instead a more complex rheological segmentation of the interface. Large and megathrust earthquake ruptures seem interspersed among regions of low seismic coupling and less stress buildup. In this weaker zone, the strain is primarily released via a combination of moderate-size swarm-like seismicity and aseismic slip. Along the Chilean subduction zone, the densification of the seismic network allowed for the identification of localized seismic clusters, some of them appearing in the form of swarms before megathrust earthquakes. The origin and driving processes of this seismic activity have not yet been identified. In this study, we follow a systematic approach to characterize the seismicity at two persistent clusters in Central Chile, one located offshore Navidad and one inland, at ∼40 km depth beneath Vichuquén, which occurred throughout ∼20 yr. We investigated these clusters, by deriving high-resolution hypocentral locations and moment tensors and performing a detailed analysis of spatio-temporal patterns, magnitude and interevent time distributions of the clustered earthquakes. Both clusters are characterized by weak to moderate seismicity (below M w 6) and stand out as clear seismicity rate and Benioff strain anomalies. At the Navidad cluster, seismicity occurs in the form of swarms, with a characteristic duration of 2–7 d and location and thrust mechanisms compatible with activity on the slab interface. Conversely, we find at Vichuquén activity dominated by thrust earthquakes occurring as repeaters on the slab interface, with a slip rate of approximately ∼5.0 cm yr−1. We attribute these clusters to local features of the subducting plate: the Navidad swarms are likely driven by repeated high pore pressure transients along a pre-fractured patch of the slab, while the seismicity at the Vichuquén cluster is interpreted as the result of a subducting seamount. Both clusters have been active before and after the M w 8.8 Maule earthquake and persisted afterwards with the seismicity decay following the Omori law. These interactions are especially evident for the Vichuquén cluster, where the seismicity rate increased considerably after the Maule earthquake and continues to be an area of clearly elevated seismicity rate compared to its surroundings. Key message: The HbCAld5H1 gene cloned from Hevea brasiliensis regulates the cambial activity, xylem differentiation, syringyl–guaiacyl ratio, secondary wall structure, lignification pattern and xylan distribution in xylem fibres of transgenic tobacco plants. Molecular characterization of lignin biosynthesis gene coniferaldehyde-5-hydroxylase (CAld5H) from Hevea brasiliensis and its functional validation was performed. Both sense and antisense constructs of HbCAld5H1 gene were introduced into tobacco through Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation for over expression and down-regulation of this key enzyme to understand its role affecting structural and cell wall chemistry. The anatomical studies of transgenic tobacco plants revealed the increase of cambial activity leading to xylogenesis in sense lines and considerable reduction in antisense lines. The ultra-structural studies showed that the thickness of secondary wall (S2 layer) of fibre had been decreased with non-homogenous lignin distribution in antisense lines, while sense lines showed an increase in S2 layer thickness. Maule color reaction revealed that syringyl lignin distribution in the xylem elements was increased in sense and decreased in antisense lines. The immunoelectron microscopy revealed a reduction in LM 10 and LM 11 labelling in the secondary wall of antisense tobacco lines. Biochemical studies showed a radical increase in syringyl lignin in sense lines without any significant change in total lignin content, while S/G ratio decreased considerably in antisense lines. Our results suggest that CAld5H gene plays an important role in xylogenesis stages such as cambial cell division, secondary wall thickness, xylan and syringyl lignin distribution in tobacco. The comparative characteristics of seismic and deformational effects of three great subduction megaearthquakes in Sumatra in 2004 (Mw = 9.2); in Maule, Chile, in 2010 (Mw = 8.8); and in Tohoku, Japan, in 2011 (Mw = 9.0) are considered. In all cases the main rupture at the time of the earthquake was located in the subduction zone on the surface of the oceanic lithospheric plate plunging gently beneath a continent or an island arc. The process of destruction in each focus is characterized by a megathrust, with a gentle inclination angle of ~8–18º, according to the definitions of its focal mechanism, in almost full compliance with a gentle dipping of the oceanic lithospheric plate. The displacement occurred in a locked area of the subducting plate extended for several kilometers below the ocean bottom to a depth of 30–40 km. In all three cases, the maximum coseismic slip, obtained according to the data of geodetic measurements, occurred in the upper 25 km of the locked area, while its lower part radiated coherent short-period seisms. The trace of the rupture on the surface, marked by the aftershock area, ranged from 400–600 km in the case of Tohoku and Maule earthquakes up to ~1500 km during the Sumatra earthquake. The rupture in the Maule and Tohoku earthquakes was bilateral, with its approximately symmetric propagation from the epicenter, while in the Sumatra earthquake the rupture spread unilaterally relative to the epicenter from southeast to northwest. The propagation time of the rupture also varied. If in the first two cases it was 140–160 s, for the Sumatra earthquake it lasted 500–600 s. The largest tsunami wave, up to 40–60 m in height, was recorded during the Tohoku earthquake, extending for more than 200 km along the coast of Sanriku province. The rupture during the megaearthquakes under discussion is not confined in depth to the locked seismogenic area, marked by the area of the aftershock nearest in time and the zone of maximum coseismic slips determined by the geodetic GPS measurements. The rupture continues aseismically (postseismic slip) in the transition zone from brittle to brittle-plastic slip to depths of ~60–80 km. In addition, there is evidence that the displacements on the megathrust can continue slightly deeper to the region of the brittle–plastic slip. Such episodic events of slow slip ("silent" or "slow" earthquakes) and "seismic tremor" were recorded in southwestern Japan and southern Chile. These differences in seismic and deformation effects can serve as evidence of the change in frictional properties with depth along the surface of the megathrust. It should also be recognized that the strength barriers and asperities on the megathrust surface expressed in certain geological structures or yet unclear nature of segments of high frequency radiation can manifest themselves in the character of distribution of the accompanying seismicity during the great subduction earthquakes. What controls subduction megathrust seismogenesis downdip of the mantle wedge corner (MWC)? We propose that, in the region of the 2010 Mw = 8.8 Maule, Chile, earthquake, serpentine minerals derived from the base of the hydrated mantle wedge exert a dominant control. Based on modeling, we predict that the megathrust fault zone near the MWC contains abundant lizardite/chrysotile‐rich serpentinite that transforms to antigorite‐rich serpentinite at greater depths. From the MWC at 32–40 km depth to at least 55 km, the predominantly velocity‐strengthening megathrust accommodated dynamic propagation of the 2010 rupture but with small slip and negative stress drop. The downdip distribution of interplate aftershocks exhibits a gap around the MWC that can be explained by the velocity‐strengthening behavior of lizardite/chrysotile. Interspersed velocity‐weakening and dynamic weakening antigorite‐rich patches farther downdip may be responsible for increased abundance of aftershocks and possibly for some of the high‐frequency energy radiation during the 2010 rupture. To understand what controls the megathrust seismogenic behavior of its deeper part, we conduct a case study of the 2010 magnitude 8.8 Maule, Chile, earthquake and its aftershocks. With numerical thermal modeling, we find that the deep seisomogenic behavior may be controlled by serpentine materials derived from the base of the overlying hydrated mantle wedge. The deep part of the megathrust ruptured "passively" against increasing resistance (negative stress drop). Lower‐temperature serpentines lizardite and chrysotile that are known to facilitate aseismic slip may be responsible for an observed gap in aftershock distribution in the downdip direction. Higher‐temperature serpentine antigorite that is known to facilitate seismic slip may be responsible for increased aftershocks farther downdip and possibly radiation of high‐frequency energy during the 2010 Maule earthquake. It is a pleasure to present the seventh annual issue developed by the Los Angeles Tall Buildings Structural Design Council. This two part issue is devoted to the Offshore Maule earthquake that shook Central Chile earlier this year. These two issues represent significant lessons learned from this earthquake. This earthquake is very significant as it presents a unique opportunity to study the effects of a true mega earthquake (with moment magnitude of 8·8) on modern tall buildings designed with contemporary building codes and constructed with modern construction methods. The building codes and construction methods are similar to those used in the USA so this event should be of interest to all structural engineers. This earthquake occurred on the South American subduction zone, which has uncanny similarities to other similar subduction zones around the world including the Cascadia subduction zone off the coast of the Pacific Northwest of the USA and Southern British Columbia, Canada; other subduction zones include those off of Alaska, Japan, Philippines and Indonesia. An assessment of damage and seismic fragility of historical unreinforced masonry churches located in Chile's central valley was carried out employing the results of a field survey of 106 ancient churches, after the 2010 Maule earthquake. The observed damage was correlated with recurrent failure mechanisms of unreinforced masonry structures, by taking into account 22 local mechanisms involving macro-elements on these churches. The average damage level suffered by each church was computed considering the global and local behaviors of the structures through a damage index computed as a weighted mean of the levels of damage observed for each mechanism. The results of this damage index method are used to obtain Probability Mass Functions and suitable probabilistic tools are used to propose Empirical Fragility Curves (EFCs) for these structures. The EFCs are directly usable by stakeholders involved in risk assessment aimed to the prioritization of possible future damage mitigation strategies and other decision making processes relative to this historical heritage. The aim of this study is to propose an empirical spatial model to estimate the spatial variability of grapevine phenology at the within-field scale. This spatial model allows the characterization of the spatial variability of a given variable of the fields through a single measurement performed in the field (reference site) and a combination of site-specific coefficients calculated through historical information. This approach was compared to classical approaches requiring extensive sampling and phenology models based on climatic data, which do not consider the spatial variability of the field. The study was conducted on two fields of Vitis vinifera, one of cv Cabernet Sauvignon (CS, 1.56 ha) and the other one of cv Chardonnay (CH, 1.66 ha) located in Maule Valley, Chile. Date of occurrence of grapevine phenology (budburst, flowering and veraison) were observed at the within field level following a regular sampling grid during 4 seasons for cv CS and 2 seasons for cv CH. The best results were obtained with the devised spatial model in almost all cases, with a Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE) lower than 3 days. However, if the variability of phenology is low, the traditional method of sampling could lead to better results. This study is the first step towards a modeling of the spatial variability of grapevine phenology at the within-field scale. To be fully operational in commercial vineyards, the calibration process needs simplification, for example, using low cost, inexpensive ancillary information to zone vineyards according to grapevine phenology. Knowledge of deformation at plate boundaries has been improved greatly by the development of observational techniques in space geodesy. However, most theoretical and numerical models of coseismic deformation have remained very simple and do not include realistic Earth structure. 3-D material heterogeneity and topography are often neglected because simple models are assumed to be sufficient and available tools cannot easily accommodate complex heterogeneity. In this study, we demonstrate the importance of 3-D heterogeneity using a spectral element method that incorporates topography and 3-D material properties. Using a parabolic hill model and a topographic model of the 2010 Maule earthquake, we show that topographic features can alter the shape of observed surface deformation patterns. We also estimate the coseismic surface deformation due to a model of the slip distribution of the 2015 Gorkha earthquake using realistic topography and 3-D elastic structure, and find that the presence of topography causes changes in the shape of observed surface displacement patterns, while material heterogeneities primarily affect the magnitude of observed displacements. The aim of this research was to evaluate the clumped model for estimating latent heat flux (LE) and actual evapotranspiration (ETa) over a non-water-stressed olive orchard. Additionally, submodels to compute the net radiation Rn, soil heat flux G, and canopy resistance were also included. For this objective, a database was used from an experimental unit inside a commercial superintensive drip-irrigated olive orchard located in the Pencahue Valley, Maule Region, Chile (35°23′S, 71°44′W; 96 m above sea level) during the 2009/10 and 2010/11 growing seasons. The evaluation was carried out using measurements of LE obtained from an eddy covariance (EC) system. In addition, estimated values of Rn, G, and were compared with ground-truth measurements from a four-way net radiometer, soil heat flux plates with soil thermocouples, and a portable porometer, respectively. Results indicated that the clumped model underestimated LE and ETa with errors of 11.0% and 3.0%, respectively. Values of the root-mean-square error (RMSE), mean bias error (MBE), and index of agreement dr for LE were 35 W m−2, −1.0 W m−2, and 0.96, while those for ETa were 0.48 mm day−1, 0.04 mm day−1, and 0.64, respectively. The submodels computed Rn and G with errors less than 6% and RMSE values less than 65 W m−2, while the Jarvis-type model predicted with RMSE = 41 s m−1 and MBE = 7.0 s m−1. Finally, a sensitivity analysis indicated that the ETa estimated by the clumped model was significantly affected by variations of ±30% in the values of the LAI and the minimum stomatal resistance rstmin. Background: The norms for evaluating the maximum expiratory flow (MEF) usually are developed according to chronological age and height. However, to date, little research has been conducted using reference values that take into account the temporal changes of biological maturation. The objectives of this study were to (a) compare the MEF with those of other international studies, (b) align the MEF values with chronological and biological age, and (c) propose reference standards for children and adolescents. Methods: The sample studied consisted of 3,566 students of both sexes (1,933 males and 1,633 females) ranging in age from 5.0 to 17.9 years old. Weight, standing height, and sitting height were measured. Body mass index was calculated. Biological maturation was predicted by using age of peak height velocity growth (APHV). MEF (L/min) was obtained by using a forced expiratory manoeuvre. Percentiles were calculated using the LMS method. Results and Discussion: Predicted APHV was at age 14.77 ± 0.78 years for males and for females at age 12.74 ± 1.0 years. Biological age was more useful than chronological age for assessing MEF in both sexes. Based on these findings, regional percentiles were created to diagnose and monitor the risk of asthma and the general expiratory status of paediatric populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
