After about a century, the skull of the holotype and sole specimen of Arambourgia gaudryi from the Eocene of Quercy (France) is here redescribed. Its interest resides in its extreme morphology, such as its very small skull and altirostral condition, that raises questions about its maturity, taxonomic validity, and paleoecology. In order to reveal previously hidden anatomical details, we used computed microtomography (µCT-scan) data to digitally extract the bones of the cranium and mandible, as well as the endocranial structures. Here, we update the osteological description of A. gaudryi, outlining new characters and re-evaluating anatomical details. Comparing it with ontogenetic series of extant crocodylians, we confirm that the specimen is a mature individual of a dwarf species with pedomorphic features. Our phylogenetic analyses indicate that A. gaudryi is an alligatorine. Comparisons with other small alligatoroid taxa show that it is indeed a valid species. The depositional environment of the finding site suggests a continental context with a karstic network. Taking this into account, together with its peculiar anatomy, we propose that A. gaudryi was a semi-terrestrial animal occupying an ecological niche similar to that of extant juvenile or dwarf crocodylians. Finally, we discuss the current knowledge of the paleobiogeography of Alligatoroidea in Europe during the Paleogene. Arambourgia gaudryi was likely part of a group of small early globidontans that arrived in the Old World, probably from North America, around the end of the Paleocene and that dispersed to at least four localities of the ancient European archipelago. We describe nearly complete skeletons of basal Anseriformes from the Latest Paleocene to the early Eocene of North America and Europe. Collectively, these birds appear to be representative of anseriforms near the divergence of Anhimae and Anseres, but their exact positions relative to these clades remains uncertain. A new family, Anachronornithidae nov. fam., is erected on the basis of one of these, Anachronornis anhimops nov. gen., nov. gen. et sp., to which the others cannot be confidently assigned. The new fossils augment a growing collection of early Pan-Anseriformes, which in their diversity do not paint an unambiguous picture of phylogeny or character state evolution on the path to or within crown-Anseriformes. Anachronornis nov. gen. is similar in some aspects of both cranial and postcranial anatomy to other well-represented early Paleogene Anseriformes and members of Anseres, such as Presbyornis Wetmore, 1926. However, it exhibits a more landfowl-like bill, like that of Anhimae and unlike the spatulate bill of Anseres. Additional specimens of similar basal Anseriformes of uncertain affinities from the early Eocene of North America and Europe further complicate interpretation of character state polarity due to the mosaicism of primitive and derived characters they exhibit. In contrast to the rich collections of articulated spiny-rayed fishes from early Late Cretaceous and Eocene Lagerstätten, similar skeletal remains are sparse in Maastrichtian-Paleocene strata. Here we coin this poorly understood span "Patterson's Gap" and review known articulated skeletons from it, summarizing available information on their phylogenetic affinities, age, and environmental context. Roughly fifty percent of taxa in both the Maastrichtian and Paleocene come from Europe and North America, with percomorphs representing around 60% of the skeletal acanthomorph taxa in each interval. This is higher than the only pre-Maastrichtian assemblage with a reasonable sample of percomorphs, but lower than most Eocene and younger sites. Fossils from Patterson's Gap show a steady accumulation of the principal lineages of spiny-rayed fishes. Material from Paleocene or older strata provides evidence for most of the roughly 20 major acanthomorph divisions recovered by molecular studies. Many fossils from Patterson's Gap remain undescribed and unnamed, and almost none have been included within formal phylogenetic analyses. Revision of existing material, combined with additional fieldwork, should be a priority for future efforts seeking to clarify this murky but significant interval in the evolutionary history of a major vertebrate radiation. The South American characiform family Hemiodontidae comprises five genera and 34 species. The family lacks comprehensive phylogenetic hypotheses resolving its species relationships. The studies that addressed these questions exhibited a narrow taxon sampling or used single-locus markers. Herein we surveyed hundreds of ultraconserved elements (UCEs) loci to provide the first molecular phylogenetic hypothesis and divergence time estimates for hemiodontids encompassing all its genera and most species (27 of the 34 valid species). We also tracked the history of the protractile upper jaw in the genera Argonectes and Bivibranchia across the recovered phylogenies through ancestral state reconstruction. Our results corroborate the monophyly of Hemiodontidae and the genera Argonectes and Bivibranchia in all phylogenetic methods with maximum clade support. The genera Anodus and Hemiodus were not monophyletic because Anodus elongatus was sister to the monotypic Micromischodus instead of A. orinocensis , and H. immaculatus did not form a clade with its other congeners, but instead was sister to the clade including Anodus and Micromischodus. All remaining species of Hemiodus were placed together into a monophyletic group, where they were arranged into four major subclades. The relationship in the family is summarised as: (Bivibranchia , (Argonectes , ((H. immaculatus , (Anodus , Micromischodus)), Hemiodus clade))), in discordance with the morphological phylogeny that placed all genera monophyletic and resolved the family as: ((Anodus , Micromischodus), (Hemiodus , (Argonectes , Bivibranchia))). The origin of Hemiodontidae was estimated from the Late Cretaceous to the Middle Paleogene, with the mean age in the Paleocene, while the origin of most hemiodontid genera except Bivibranchia occurred in the Miocene. ABSTRACT The 'Age of Mammals' began in the Paleocene epoch, the 10 million year interval immediately following the Cretaceous-Palaeogene mass extinction. The apparently rapid shift in mammalian ecomorphs from small, largely insectivorous forms to many small-to-large-bodied, diverse taxa has driven a hypothesis that the end-Cretaceous heralded an adaptive radiation in placental mammal evolution. However, the affinities of most Paleocene mammals have remained unresolved, despite significant advances in understanding the relationships of the extant orders, hindering efforts to reconstruct robustly the origin and early evolution of placental mammals. Here we present the largest cladistic analysis of Paleocene placentals to date, from a data matrix including 177 taxa (130 of which are Palaeogene) and 680 morphological characters. We improve the resolution of the relationships of several enigmatic Paleocene clades, including families of 'condylarths'. Protungulatum is resolved as a stem eutherian, meaning that no crown-placental mammal unambiguously pre-dates the Cretaceous-Palaeogene boundary. Our results support an Atlantogenata-Boreoeutheria split at the root of crown Placentalia, the presence of phenacodontids as closest relatives of Perissodactyla, the validity of Euungulata, and the placement of Arctocyonidae close to Carnivora. Periptychidae and Pantodonta are resolved as sister taxa, Leptictida and Cimolestidae are found to be stem eutherians, and Hyopsodontidae is highly polyphyletic. The inclusion of Paleocene taxa in a placental phylogeny alters interpretations of relationships and key events in mammalian evolutionary history. Paleocene mammals are an essential source of data for understanding fully the biotic dynamics associated with the end-Cretaceous mass extinction. Nyctitheriidae is a diverse group of small, insectivorous mammals from the Paleogene of Asia, North America, and Europe that have alternately been linked to Eulipotyphla (shrews, moles, hedgehogs, solenodons), Euarchonta (primates, tree shrews, dermopterans), or Chiroptera (bats). Even intrafamilial relationships are poorly understood, resulting in ambiguity regarding morphological character polarity critical for evaluating supraordinal relationships and paleobiogeographic patterns. To help address this issue, we performed a cladistic analysis of 51 North American, European, and Asian nyctitheriid species, including a new nyctitheriid, Plagioctenodon thewisseni sp. nov. from the late Paleocene of Wyoming, using 66 characters derived from dental morphology. Although the oldest nyctitheriids are found in North America, the resulting most-parsimonious cladograms support an Asian origin of the family with dispersal into North America by the early Paleocene. Among North American and European groups, the subfamilies Nyctitheriinae and Amphidozotheriinae, and the genera Leptacodon and Saturninia are not monophyletic and require future study and revision. The multi-species genera Nyctitherium, Plagioctenodon (including P. thewisseni), Plagioctenoides, Cryptotopos, and Euronyctia are found to be monophyletic, whereas Wyonycteris is paraphyletic, having Pontifactor bestiola nested within it. The earliest known European nyctitheriids ( Leptacodon nascimentoi, Placentidens lotus, Plagioctenodon dormaalensis, Wyonycteris richardi) appear in the early Eocene and are each found in an otherwise strictly North American clade consisting of either solely Paleocene or a combination of Paleocene and Eocene taxa, suggesting at least four earliest Eocene dispersals between North America and Europe. Recent studies show Xenarthra to be even more isolated systematically from other placental mammals than traditionally thought. The group not only represents 1 of 4 primary placental clades, but proposed links to other fossorial mammal taxa (e.g., Pholidota, Palaeanodonta) have been contradicted. No unambiguous Paleocene fossil xenarthran remains are known, and Eocene remains consist almost exclusively of isolated cingulate osteoderms and isolated postcrania of uncertain systematic provenance. Cingulate skulls are unknown until the late middle Eocene, and the oldest sloth and anteater skulls are early Oligocene and early Miocene age, respectively; there are no nearly complete xenarthran skeletons until the early Miocene. Ecological reconstructions of early xenarthrans based on extant species and the paleobiology of extinct Neogene taxa suggest the group's progenitors were myrmecophagous with digging and perhaps some climbing adaptations. The earliest cingulates were terrestrial diggers and likely myrmecophagous but soon diverged into numerous omnivorous lineages. Early sloths were herbivores with a preference for forested habitats, exhibiting both digging and climbing adaptations. We attribute the rarity of early xenarthran remains to low population densities associated with myrmecophagy, lack of durable, enamel-covered teeth, and general scarcity of fossil localities from tropical latitudes of South America. The derivation of numerous omnivorous and herbivorous lineages from a myrmecophagous ancestor is a curious and unique feature of xenarthran history and may be due to the peculiar ecology of the native South American mammal fauna. Metatherian mammals were the most diverse mammalian clade in North America through the Late Cretaceous, but they underwent a severe extinction at the Cretaceous–Palaeogene (K-Pg) boundary. In order to clarify the origin of Palaeogene metatherians and the pattern of metatherian survivorship across the K-Pg boundary we conducted an inclusive species-level phylogenetic analysis of Cretaceous and early Palaeogene metatherian taxa. This analysis includes information from new Palaeocene specimens from south-western North America. Both the phylogenetic topology and information from new specimens support the validity of the genus Thylacodon and justify the recognition of a new species, T. montanensis. Thylacodon is closely related to Swaindelphys and Herpetotheriidae, which must have diverged by the latest Cretaceous due to its close relationship with late Campanian Ectocentrocristus. Pediomyidae and ‘Peradectidae sensu lato’ together comprise a major metatherian clade. Maastrichtidelphys, from the Late Cretaceous of the Netherlands, is the oldest member of ‘Peradectidae sensu lato’, indicating a Cretaceous origination for this group. Therefore, the major groups Herpetotheriidae and ‘Peradectidae sensu lato’, represented almost completely by Palaeocene taxa, must have originated in the Late Cretaceous. The lineages leading to these clades include at least four lineages that must have crossed the K-Pg boundary and therefore confirm that the K-Pg boundary marked a profound extinction event for metatherians and suggests that Palaeogene taxa originated from only a few clades of Cretaceous species, all of which were relatively minor or very rare components of known Cretaceous mammalian faunas.
