Calcium oxalate phytoliths are one of the most prominent types of Ca speciation in the plant kingdom, and they store extensive amounts of carbon in crystalline form. Ca phytoliths were investigated in the root, trunk, and bark of Vitis vinifera Chasselas from a vineyard in Alsace, France. A multi-analytical approach was used, which included SEM coupled with EDX spectroscopy, XRD, XRF, TGA, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. These techniques revealed that phytoliths are composed of crystalline calcium oxalate monohydrate (whewellite). The whewellite crystals exhibited mostly equant or short-prismatic habits in all of the three studied grapevine parts, but bipyramidal crystals also occurred. Raphide crystals were only observed in the root, where they were abundant. Instead of using wet chemical procedures to extract the mineral components from the organic parts of the biomass, a thermal treatment via calcination was chosen. The suitable temperature of calcination was determined through TGA experiments. The calcination of the biomass samples at 250 °C enhanced the amounts of Ca phytoliths in the residual chars. The thermal treatment, however, affected the appearance of the Ca oxalate crystals by producing surfaces that displayed macroporosity and by creating fractures. For calcination at both 300 °C and 350 °C, Ca oxalate lost a molecule of carbon monoxide to form Ca carbonate, and the modifications of the original crystal surfaces were more pronounced than those observed after thermal treatment at 250 °C. Nanostructured silicon carbide (SiC) is an exceptional material with numerous applications, for example, in catalysis, biomedicine, high‐performance composites, and sensing. In this study, a fast and scalable method of producing nanostructured SiC from plant materials by magnesiothermic reduction via self‐propagating high‐temperature synthesis (SHS) route was developed. The produced biogenic material possessed a high surface area above 200 m2/g with a SiC crystallite size below 10 nm, which has not been done previously by SHS. This method enables affordable synthesis of the material plant‐based precursors in a reaction that only takes a few seconds, thereby paving a way for nanostructured SiC production in high volumes using renewable resources. The material was also functionalized with carboxylic acid and bisphosphonate moieties, and its use as metal adsorbent in applications such as wastewater remediation was demonstrated. In view of their technological impact in materials chemistry, a simplified and more efficient synthetic route to mesoporous films is highly sought. We report, herein, a smart UV-mediated approach coupling in a one-stage process sol-gel photopolymerization and photoinduced template decomposition/ablation to making mesoporous silica films. Performed at room temperature with a solvent-free solution of silicate precursor and amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)- poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymer, the synthesis relies on photoacid generation to induce the fast formation (≈10 min) of mesostructured silica/surfactant domains. Continuation of UV exposure for three additional hours enables subsequent and complete photodegradation of the polyether copolymer, resulting in ordered or disordered mesoporous silica film. One of the most attractive features is that the one-step procedure relies on a continuous illumination provided by the same conventional medium-pressure Hg-Xe arc lamp equipped with a 254 nm reflector to enhance the emission of energetic photons <300 nm. In addition to X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, time-resolved Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has proved to be a powerful in situ technique to probe the different chemical transformations accompanying irradiation. Photocalcination strengthens the inorganic network, while allowing to preserve a higher fraction of residual silanol groups compared with thermal calcination. The article discusses the synthesis of a novel single hybrid monomer combining a vinylether and trimethoxysilane groups in the same molecule through chemoselective hydrosilation. It was also subjected to ultraviolet (UV)-irradiation in the presence of a triarylsulfonium salt. A type II polyvinyl-polysilicate nanocomposite film resulted from the simultaneous occurrence of two acid-catalyzed processes. Parameters such as laminated conditions, UV irradiation equipment and film thickness were also investigated.

In contrast with the conventional CoMoS/alumina catalyst, the use of amorphous mesostructured ZrO2 as support for the dispersion of the CoMoS active phase in deep hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene led to a higher promotion rate and a better sulfidation of the cobalt species. The CoMoS, dispersed over mesostructured amorphous ZrO2 as catalyst, also induced a modification of the main desulfurization way; in this case, a shift towards direct desulfurization selectivity was observed. This result was unexpected regarding the literature. Indeed, the hydrogenated route was observed for commercial zirconia. The designed catalysts are therefore more eco-friendly, since they consume less hydrogen. This implies a better use of the fossil resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The two title 5-oxa-2,6-di­aza­spiro­[3.4]­octan-1-one adducts, 7-benzoyl-2-(4-methoxy­phenyl)-6-phenyl-5-oxa-2,6-di­aza­spiro­[3.4]­octan-1-one, C25H22N2O4, (III), and 6- tert-butyl-2-(4-methyl­phenyl)-7-phenyl-5-oxa-2,6-di­aza­spiro­[3.4]­octan-1-one, C22H26N2O2, (IV), were obtained from a stereospecific [3+2] 1,3-cyclo­addition of 3-methyl­ene azetidin-2-ones as dipolaro­philes with nitro­nes. The lactam ring is conjugated with the p-­methoxy­phenyl or p-methyl­phenyl moiety. Safe drinking water is a necessity for every human being, but clean water is scarce and not easily available due to natural geochemical factors or industrial pollutant activity. Many issues involving water quality could be greatly improved using clays as adsorbents. We highlight for the first time, the uptake of fluoride from natural water by Laponite, synthetic hectorite clay, in raw and modified state. A series of batch adsorption experiments were carried out to evaluate the adsorption potential of the different parameters. The optimized parameters were: contact time, adsorbent dose and pH. It was found that fluoride uptake from natural water was better using raw Laponite and inorganic-modified Laponite than using organic-modified Laponite clays. Adsorbents were characterized before and after fluoride adsorption by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, FTIR, thermo gravimetric analyses and 19 F solid state NMR spectroscopy. The experimental data showed that both Langmuir and Freundlich models fitted an adsorption isotherm well. Thermodynamic parameters such as Gibbs free energy (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°), and entropy (ΔS°) were calculated. These parameters indicated that fluoride adsorption onto Laponite was nonspontaneous and endothermic in temperature range between 25 and 45 °C.

Photoacid-catalyzed sol-gel polymerization is now recognized as a powerful single-step synthetic approach to the synthesis of hybrid films, which can be distinguished from conventional sol-gel methods by higher reactivity and a solvent-free process. Despite its utility, the mechanism is not yet understood, in particular what chemical, physical, and photochemical parameters determine the precise sequence, kinetics, and advancement of this UV inorganic photopolymerization. Here, using mainly transmission real-time Fourier transformed infrared (RT-FTIR) spectroscopy, we characterize in situ the hydrolysis-condensation reactions of oligomeric silicon alkoxides and the formation of byproducts. Systematic review and assessment of numerous processing variables (relative humidity, film thickness, precursor structure, nature, and the concentration of photoacid generator) prove that the reaction kinetics are controlled by the two independent phenomena: the intrinsic chemical reaction rates and the water vapor permeation into the film.

Water intrusion-extrusion isotherms performed at room temperature on hydrophobic pure silica chabazite show that the water-Si-CHA system displays real spring behavior. However, differences in pressure-volume diagrams are observed between the first and the other intrusion-extrusion cycles, indicating that some water molecules interact with the inorganic framework after the first intrusion. (29)Si and especially (1)H solid-state NMR showed the creation of new defect sites upon the intrusion-extrusion of water and the existence of two kinds of water molecules trapped in the supercage of Si-CHA: a first layer of water strongly hydrogen bonded with the silanols of the framework and a subsequent layer of liquidlike physisorbed water molecules undergoing interaction with the first layer. This hydrogen bonding scheme is also supported by X-ray powder diffraction.
