As a crucial industrial, agricultural, and energy base in China, the urban agglomerations in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) have faced increasingly significant pressure for carbon emission reduction since the implementation of the "Dual Carbon" strategy. This study focuses on 615 counties within the major urban agglomerations in the YRB, analyzing the spatiotemporal evolution of carbon budget in land use from 2000 to 2020. Methods such as the normalized revealed comparative advantage (NRCA) index and SOM-K-means model are employed to explore the carbon compensation zoning of counties in the urban agglomerations in the YRB from the perspective of main functional zones. The results show that: (1) From 2000 to 2020, there was a significant and continuous widening gap between carbon emissions and carbon absorption in the study area. The total carbon emissions increased significantly from 3.64 × 108 to 13.56 × 108 t, showing a "north high, south low" spatial distribution pattern. Meanwhile, the carbon absorption remained stable at around 6.47 × 107 t, with a spatial distribution pattern roughly characterized by "higher in the west, lower in the east, and highest in the central part". The carbon budget of various types of functional zones generally aligns well with their strategic positioning. (2) There is a significant regional difference in net carbon emissions among urban agglomerations, with the greatest internal variation observed in the Guanzhong Plain Urban Agglomeration (Gw = 0.471) and the most notable differences between the Lanzhou-Xining Urban Agglomeration and others (Gb = 0.554). (3) The study area consists of 273 payment zones, 257 balanced zones, and 85 compensated zones. Water plays a significant role in every sector of the ecosystem. The fluctuation of the water levels in lakes is influenced by natural and man-made factors within the water catchment. Lake Baringo, which has no visible outlet, has been rising drastically, causing panic among native communities and businesses on the shores of the lake. Using GIS and Remote Sensing, this study intends to analyze the changes in water lakes using the Automatic water extraction index (AWEI), determine the causes of the fluctuation using Land use Land cover, land surface temperature, soil erosion, and siltation in the lake basin and the lake respectively, precipitation, and later predict of the water level for the year 2030 using the MOLUSCE tool. The tool utilizes an artificial neural network and cellular automata to analyze land use and land cover conveniently. It was found that the lake's water level has been increasing drastically over the years, and the leading causes of the fluctuations were increased rainfall and human activities within the water basin. There are visible increased human activities within the water basin, such as agriculture, deforestation, settlement, and urbanization. It was also found that there will be a further increase in water level in 2030. With all the above results, it is recommended that better policies be made to conserve the water basin effectively, and a plan should be drawn to re-delineate the new riparian buffer. This study investigates the Dynamic Coupling between Land Use Economic Efficiency (LUEE) and Urban Ecological Resilience (UER) in the Yellow River Basin (YRB). This exploration is pivotal for elucidating the interaction mechanisms between economic growth and ecological governance. Furthermore, understanding this relationship is essential for fostering high-quality, sustainable urban development in the YRB. Utilizing panel data from 56 cities spanning 2003 to 2020, this study employed the coupling coordination degree (CCD) model, spatial correlation analysis, Kernel density estimation, convergence model, and Geodetector to systematically analyze the spatio-temporal distribution, dynamic trend, and determinants of the CCD between LUEE and UER in the YRB. The findings indicate that: (1) A general upward trend in both LUEE and UER, accompanied by a steady improvement in their CCD. (2) Significant spatial disparities in their CCD, with higher levels in the lower reaches. (3) Marked positive spatial autocorrelation, predominantly characterized by clusters where high (low) values are surrounded by high (low) values. (4) Regarding the impact of individual factors, government fiscal budget expenditure demonstrates the most robust explanatory power for the CCD within the YRB. Concerning the effects of two-factor interactions, the interplay between industrial structure upgrading and government fiscal budget expenditure emerges as the most significant determinant in influencing the CCD between LUEE and UER. This study enhances our comprehensive understanding of the interplay between economic and ecological systems. Rapid growth rate indicates that the free-floating electric vehicle sharing (FFEVS) system leads to a new carsharing idea. Like other carsharing systems, the FFEVS system faces significant regional demand fluctuations. In such a situation, the rental stations and charging stations should be constructed in high-demand areas to reduce the scheduling costs. However, the planning of the FFEVS system includes a series of aspects of rental stations and charging stations, such as the location, size, and number, which interact with each other. In this paper, we first provide a method for forecasting the demand for car sharing based on the land characteristics of Beijing FFEVS station catchment areas. Then, the multi-objective MILP model for planning FFEVS systems is developed, which considers the requirements of vehicle relocation and electric vehicle charging. Afterward, the capabilities of the proposed models are demonstrated by the real data obtained from Beijing, China. Finally, the sensitivity analysis of the model is made based on varying demand and subsidy levels. From the results, the proposed model can provide decision-makers with useful insights about the planning of FFEVS systems, which bring great benefits to formulating more rational policies. This study assessed the impacts of the land use/cover (LULC) and climate changes on the runoff and sediment flows in the Megech watershed. The Geospatial Water Erosion Prediction Project (GeoWEPP) was used to assess LULC and climate changes' impact on runoff, soil loss, and sediment yield. The QGIS 2.16.3 plugin module for land use change evaluation (MOLUSCE) tool with the cellular automata artificial neural network (CA-ANN) was used for LULC prediction based on historical data and exploratory maps. Two commonly used representative concentration pathways (RCPs)—4.5 and 8.5—were used for climate projection in the 2030s, 2050s, and 2070s. The LULC prediction analysis showed an expansion of cropland and settlement areas, with the reduction in the forest and rangelands. The climate projections indicated an increase in maximum temperatures and altered precipitation patterns, particularly with increased wet months and reduced dry periods. The average annual soil loss and sediment yield rates were estimated to increase under both the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 climate scenarios, with a more noticeable increase under RCP8.5. By integrating DEM, soil, land use, and climate data, we evaluated runoff, soil loss, and sediment yield changes on only land use/cover, only climate, and the combined impacts in the watershed. The results revealed that, under all combined scenarios, the sediment yield in the Megech Reservoir was projected to substantially increase by 23.28–41.01%, showing a potential loss of reservoir capacity. This study recommends strong climate adaptation and mitigation measures to alleviate the impact on land and water resources. Accurate identification of the spatio-temporal planting structure and analysis of its driving factors in an irrigation district are the important bases for scientific and reasonable utilization of irrigation water resources. In pursuit of this goal, the training sample migration method combined with the random forest algorithm were used to classify land use and planting structure over 2001–2022 in the lower Yellow River Basin. Moreover, an econometric regression model was applied to quantify the driving factors of the change in the crop-planted area. The results illustrated that the identification method has relatively high accuracy in identifying historical periods of land use and planting structures, with the average kappa coefficient equating to 0.953. From 2001 to 2022, the area of cultivated land was the largest, with the proportion of the total area increasing from 45.72% to 58.12%. The planted area of winter wheat–summer maize rotation increased from 74.84% to 88.11% of the cultivated land. While the planted area of cotton declined by 96.36%, about 50% of cotton planting was converted to the winter wheat–summer maize rotation planting. The government policies about grain purchase and storage were the dominant factors for the change in the crop-planted area. This resulted in an increase of 63.32 × 103 ha and 63.98 × 103 ha in the planted area of winter wheat and summer maize, respectively. Land use change has a significant impact on the sustainability of ecosystems, and ecological security patterns (ESPs) can improve environmental quality through spatial planning. This study explored a multi-scenario ESP framework by integrating future land use simulation (FLUS) and minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) for urban agglomeration along the Yellow River Basin (YRB) in Ningxia. The research involved simulating land use change in 2035 under four development scenarios, identifying ecological security networks, and evaluating network stability for each scenario. The study revealed that the ecological sources under different development scenarios, including a natural development scenario (NDS), an economic development scenario (EDS), a food security scenario (FSS), and an ecological protection scenario (EPS), were 834.82 km2, 715.46 km2, 785.56 km2, and 1091.43 km2, respectively. The overall connectivity values (OG) for these scenarios were 0.351, 0.466, 0.334, and 0.520, respectively. It was found that under an EPS, the ESPs had the largest area of ecological sources and the most stable ecological network structure, which can effectively protect natural habitats. This study provides a valuable method for identifying ESPs that can respond to diversity and the uncertainty of future development. The operation of the subway system necessitates a comprehensive understanding of passenger flow characteristics at station locations, as well as a keen awareness of the average travel distances at these stations. Moreover, the travel distances at the station level bear a direct relationship with the built environment composed of land use characteristics within the station's catchment area. To this end, we selected the land use features within an 800 m radius of the station (land use area, distribution of points of interest, and the surrounding living environment) as the influencing factors, with the travel distances at peak hours on the subway network in Xi'an as the research subject. An improved SSA-XGBOOST-SHAP interpretable machine learning framework was established. The research findings demonstrate that the proposed enhanced model outperforms traditional machine learning or linear regression methods in terms of R-squared, MAE, and RMSE. Furthermore, the distance from the city center, road network density, the number of public transit routes, and the land use mix have a pronounced influence on travel distances, reflecting the significant impact that mature built environments can have on passenger attraction. Additionally, the analysis reveals a notable nonlinear relationship and threshold effect between the built environment variables comprising land use and the travel distances during peak hours. The research results provide data-driven support for operational strategy management and line capacity optimization, as well as theoretical underpinnings for enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of the entire subway system. Studying the spatiotemporal evolution and driving forces behind construction land amidst the intricate ecological and geological setting on the eastern edge of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau offers invaluable insights for local sustainable development in a landscape transition zone and ecologically fragile area. Using construction land data from four phases, spanning 1990 to 2020, in Mianning County, this study employs methodologies like the Landscape Expansion Index (LEI) and land use transfer matrix to delineate the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of construction land. A comprehensive set of 12 influencing factors across five categories—geomorphology, geological activity, climate, river and vegetation environment, and social economy—were examined. The Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model was then employed to decipher the spatial distribution pattern of construction land in 1990 and 2020, shedding light on the driving mechanisms behind its changes over the three decades. The research reveals distinct patterns of construction land distribution and evolution in Mianning County, shaped by the ecological and geological landscape. Notably, the Anning River wide valley exhibits a concentrated and contiguous development mode, while the Yalong River deep valley showcases a decentralized development pattern, and the Dadu River basin manifests an aggregation development mode centered around high mountain lakes. Over the study period, all three river basins witnessed varying degrees of construction land expansion, transitioning from quantitative expansion to qualitative enhancement. Edge expansion predominantly characterizes the expansion mode, complemented by leapfrog and infilling modes, accompanied by conversions from cropland and forest land to construction land. An analysis of the spatial pattern and drivers of construction land change highlights human-induced factors dominating the Anning River Basin, contrasting with natural factors prevailing in the Yalong River Basin and the Dadu River Basin. Surface water resources have played a fundamental role in the development of human societies. Considering that different agricultural and industrial activities are carried out in the Acacias River basin, the main objective of this research was to analyze the influence of land use on the water quality in this area by identifying the main sources that influence river water quality. The methodology consisted of establishing 12 sampling stations with different land uses at three times. The National Sanitation Foundation-Water Quality Index (NSF-WQI) was applied to the obtained water quality evaluation data. The main results showed that the stations associated with urban centers presented a higher concentration in the following variables: fecal coliforms, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and phosphates. The principal components analysis revealed a close relation between the parameters of fecal coliforms, phosphates and BOD, and the pollution processes by organic matter, which are probably related to domestic and industrial wastewater discharges, and to detergents in urbanized areas. The parameters with the greatest range of values were total dissolved solids and turbidity. These results coincide with what was observed in the correlation analysis. Finally, nitrates showed higher concentrations at stations 6 and 7, associated with agricultural and industrial influence areas (i.e., oil palm crops in the basin). This study about the Acacias River is, thus, extremely important for the region, and concludes that the river's self-purifying capacity allows improved water quality in the areas where the predominant land use is not associated with human settlements. Introduction: Land use land cover (LULC) change is an important factor driving global change, influenced by the interaction between human activities and natural ecosystems. The upper watershed of the Qingshui River is adversely affected due to anthropogenic activities. Therefore, analyzing the driving factors of land use changes in this area is crucial for ecological protection and sustainable development. Methods: Based on the long-term Landsat image data from 1990-2020, the spatiotemporal change characteristics of the LULC rate and its driving factors in the upper watershed of the Qingshui River basin were analyzed using the land use transfer matrix and dynamic degree of land use processes. The redundancy analysis was performed to investigate the links between LULC changes, socio-economic and climatic variables. Results: From 1990-2020, the area under waters and woodland decreased by -2.94 km² and -451.44 km², respectively. Meanwhile, grassland, arable land, construction land, and unused land area increased by 278.71 km², 115.72 km², 46.48 km² and 13.49 km². In terms of the proportion area to the total land (2334.10 km²), woodland accounted for 63.43-44.09% of the total land and was mainly distributed in the east; arable land was 17.00-21.96% and was largely distributed on both sides of the middle and lower parts of the basin; construction land comprised 1.03-3.02% and was generally found in flat areas near the downstream and water area was only 0.1-0.01% which primarily covered the Qingshui River and its tributaries from 1990-2020. Construction and unused lands showed the fastest rate of change, followed by water area and grasslands. Accelerated urbanization, rapid socio-economic development, and the farmland-to-forest policy were the main driving forces behind the change in LULC in the upper reaches of the Qingshui River. Introduction: With the rapid advancement of industrialization and urbanization in the Yellow River Basin, the number of resource-based cities is constantly increasing, leading to an imbalance in land use structure and the gradual worsening of adverse effects such as damage to the ecological environment. Hence, improving the efficiency of green land use in resource-based cities has extremely crucial ecological and practical meaning for sustainable development. Methods: This study comprehensively considers interdisciplinary theories such as ecology and management, and combines the actual situation of resource-based cities in the Yellow River Basin to construct a new type of urban field green utilization efficiency assessment index system. To promote the coordinated development of different dimensions, the corresponding spatiotemporal evolution process and related influencing factors were also analyzed. Results and discussion: The research results indicate that the overall spatial evolution of the Yellow River Basin has active correlation. During the period from 2006 to 2022, the number of high value agglomeration cities in upstream resource-based cities increased by nearly 25%; Nearly 3% of resourcecities exhibit low-value heterogeneity, while the number of resource cities with low value agglomeration has decreased to 0. In addition, population density and scientific education expenditure level are key factors affecting the ratio of green land use in resource-based cities, while the impact of economic indicators is gradually decreasing. In summary, the assessment indicator system for urban land green utilization ratio proposed in the study is more comprehensive, and the spatial distribution results of influencing factors can provide a solid data foundation for decision-makers. This article presents the findings of ecogeomorphological studies conducted in the high-mountain belt of the southern slope of the Main Caucasus Range by utilizing satellite imagery. The investigations reaffirmed the dynamic nature of exogenous relief-forming processes evident in slope surface conditions and the diverse array of natural landscapes in high-mountain regions. The data acquired facilitated the development of measures aimed at enhancing the natural environment and guiding future land use practices. Through this research, various factors contributing to degradation processes were identified, enabling the pinpointing of erosion-prone areas on both slopes of the Greater Caucasus and the formulation of what we believe to be the most optimal anti-erosion measures scheme. Analysis of satellite imagery revealed that some river basins originating from the southern slope of the Main Caucasus Range exhibit the most pronounced soil and vegetation degradation processes. Current land-use practices in the Lugait watershed, Misamis Oriental, Philippines, play a significant role in the local economy, but they may also pose a threat to biodiversity and watershed health. This study aimed to evaluate the forest health in relation to the overall watershed condition of the said locality. Three representative sites (Barangay Kaluknayan, Upper Talacogon, and Poblacion) were chosen based on elevation. Floral assessment employed the Point-Center-Quarter-Method (PCQM). Fauna assessed included bats, birds, and hepetofauna. Soil sampling and analysis of chemical properties were conducted. Coconut (Cocos nucifera) dominated the watershed with an importance value of 199%. Fauna across sites were mostly common, adaptable species. Forested areas had medium organic matter, while agricultural lands (corn, pineapple) ranged from medium-low to low. Coconut plantations maintained medium organic matter. Both forest and agricultural lands had medium to high phosphorus content. Available potassium was sufficient in both areas. Land-use changes, particularly deforestation for cropland, led to decreased soil pH. The dominance of coconut plantations and conversion of forest to cropland highlight the need for diversified agricultural practices and sustainable management strategies. While fauna appear adaptable, biodiversity monitoring remains crucial. The declining soil pH warrants further investigation into potential long-term impacts on plant growth and water quality. Since 1990, global forest area has been reducing; tropical forests have suffered from different anthropogenic and natural factors that account for forest loss. Tropical deforestation is the second driver of anthropogenic emissions; increasing demand and investments in tropical forests drive these emissions. These forests attract significant foreign direct investments, but the effects of these investments on carbon emissions from land use, land-use change, and forestry are not well enshrined in the literature for the countries under study. This paper seeks to analyse the impact of foreign direct investments on carbon emissions from land use, land-use change, and forestry amongst 30 tropical forest countries from 1996 to 2019. The sampled countries were disaggregated by tropical blocs: Amazon, Congo basin, Australasia, and Southeast Asia, and by income levels; low-income, lower-middle, upper-middle, and high-income. The findings reveal a U-shape structure of the impact of FDI on carbon emissions from LULUCF within Congo basin and Amazon countries; at higher levels of FDI, emissions from LULUCF will increase while Australasia and Southeast Asian countries show an inverted U-shape impact, thus at higher levels of FDI, there will be a negative and significant impact on carbon emissions from LULUCF. The income levels reveal an inverted U-shape for low-income and high-income countries and a U-shape for upper-middle-income countries; the impact for lower-middle-income countries is not significant. Overall, for the whole sample, the impact depicts a U-shape. This paper proposes high-level development of environmental conditions for FDI for different sectors that align with country and regional green growth plans. Groundwater plays an important part in protecting the ecological values of the earth's systems. Assessment of groundwater (GW) recharge due to change in land use/land cover (LULC) and climate variables is essential for integrated water management and adaptation. This study is an attempt to check the combined influence of change in LULC and climate variables on GW recharge in Kallada river basin, Kerala, India. The LULC map is predicted for the year 2030 based on LULC maps during the years 1985, 1995, 2005 and 2015 using Markov chain and multilayer perceptron model. The major LULC category in the study area is plantation with an area of 797.8 km2 (49.6% in 2015) and dense forest with an area of 366.5 km2 (22.8% in 2015). Considering the period 1985–2005, a decrease of 7.43% dense forest and an increase of 2.55% built area were observed. The predicted LULC shows that there is a reduction in plantation (3.77%) and dense forest (1.28%) and increase in built-up land (4.12%) by 2030 as compared to the year 2015. The CMIP5 General Circulation Model is used for future projections of climate variables, namely daily precipitation, maximum temperature and minimum temperature under RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 scenarios. Multilayer perceptron neural network model was used for statistical downscaling of GCM projections. The SWAT model was used to estimate the groundwater recharge for the year 2030 using the predicted LULC map and hydro-meteorological variables. The results illustrate a significant drop in GW recharge in Kallada river basin by the year 2030. Average GW recharge in the Vettikavala and kottarakkara, which is in the western region of the basin, is reduced to 4.6% and 9.3% under RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 scenarios, compared to the average GW recharge in 2005, which was 24.8% of rainfall. The decline in the groundwater recharge in the western regions may be due the increase in built-up area and decrease in plantation. The current paper aims to assess the effects of landscape change in a mountain river basin in the north of Iran through quantifying, mapping, and assessing carbon storage. The analyses were performed based on previous alterations in land use and land cover (LULC) (1988–2018) and on expected changes determined by three LULC alteration setups for 2048. The Landsat imagery from 2018, 2008, 1998, and 1988 was used for evaluating and predicting the spatiotemporal distributions of LULC changes. The future LULC image prediction has been generated using Land Change Modeler (LCM) module of TerrSet software for the years 2028, 2038, and 2048. Validation was carried out by overlaying the actual and projected to 2018 map. We integrated the Markov Chain (MC) and InVEST Carbon Storage and Sequestration (InVEST-CSS) models for simulating the ecosystem carbon storage and the long-term monetary valuation. In this process, we considered social costs/economic value because of the area's loss and gain of stored carbon. The results show that forests and rangelands with good and poor conditions decreased by 631.2, 10,374, and 10,254 ha, respectively, from 1988 to 2018. Overall, modeling and mapping LULC changes showed a descending trend in forests (0.66%), agriculture (0.1%), and rangelands (4.1%) in 2048. In addition, carbon storage has already been lost by 9.9 million tons (76.98 ha−1) from 1988 to 8.8 million tons (68.86 ha−1) in 2018 and is expected to have an 8.4 million tons (65.25 ha−1) loss by 2048. Monitoring the economic value of carbon storage from 1988 to 2018 shows a loss of $US 15684338 (121.8 ha−1) and estimates a loss of $US6972622 (54.18 ha−1) by 2048. Therefore, spatiotemporal design of InVEST model by estimating the carbon value over time focuses on continuous monitoring actions for both the carbon pools dynamic and LULC pattern. This consideration causes reduction the uncertainty of estimated models and also increases the continuous cost of those changes. The interplay between climate and land use/cover significantly shapes streamflow characteristics within watersheds, with dominance varying based on geography and watershed attributes. This study quantifies the relative and combined impacts of land use/cover change (LULCC) and climate change (CC) on streamflow variability in the Baro River Basin (BRB) using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool Plus (SWAT+). The model was calibrated and validated with observed streamflow data from 1985 to 2014 and projected the future streamflow from 2041 to 2070 under two Shared Socio-Economic Pathway (i.e., SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5) scenarios, based on the ensemble of four Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) models. The LULCC was analyzed through Google Earth Engine (GEE) and predicted for the future using the Land Change Modeler (LCM), revealing reductions in forest and wetlands, and increases in agriculture, grassland, and shrubland. Simulations show that the decrease in streamflow is attributed to LULCC, whereas an increase in flow is attributed to the impact of CC. The combined impact of LULCC and CC results in a net increase in streamflow by 9.6% and 19.9% under SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios, respectively, compared to the baseline period. Our findings indicate that climate change outweighs the impact of land use/cover (LULC) in the basin, emphasizing the importance of incorporating comprehensive water resources management and adaptation approaches to address the changing hydrological conditions. The conversion of forestlands to alternative land uses is a growing worldwide concern, given the wide range of provisioning and regulating ecosystem services (ES) provided by forests. We applied a scenario-based land-use/land-cover (LULC) projection technique integrating societal preferences, conservation policies, and socio-economic factors to the Upper Flint River Watershed in the Atlanta, Georgia (USA) metropolitan area. We employed the InVEST modeling toolset to assess the impact of anticipated LULC changes on ES under each development scenario. Our simulations projected a consistent conversion from Deciduous/Mixed Forests to either Urban or Evergreen forests across all scenarios, leading to a significant decline in ES. We quantified the economic impacts of this ES loss, conservatively estimated as representing millions of dollars per year under a Business as Usual scenario in just carbon and water services alone. Integrating social and policy drivers into our projection approach yielded policy-relevant results and identified the need for conservation policy instruments to protect forested ecosystems with higher conservation values. Existing conservation policies are unlikely to stem the loss of important ES, and there may be a need to consider more aggressive policies to prevent further degradation of watersheds, such as the one analyzed here. With rapid industrialization and urbanization, the contradiction between the human exploitation of land production and living functions and natural ecosystem service functions has intensified. The issues of how to coordinate the exploitation and conservation functions of land and guide the rational distribution of human activities have become important for global sustainable development, especially considering the realization that multifunctional land use is an effective way to relieve land pressure and improve land use efficiency, that land multifunction has significant spatio-temporal heterogeneity, and that there is a mutual promotion and stress relationship between multifunctional land use. However, few existing studies have discussed the decoupling relationship among land use functions. In this study, a system of 10 sub-functions and 25 indicators was established based on the production function (PDF), living function (LVF), and ecological function (ELF) for 59 cities in the Yellow River Basin (YRB). There are both subjective and objective procedures employed to determine the weights, while an exploratory spatial data analysis is used to analyze the time-based and territorial changes in various functions of land use in the study area from 2000 to 2020. The decoupling relationship between the three functions is detected utilizing the theoretical foundation of the decoupling analysis. The results show that land use is multifunctional, LUFs develop unevenly, and their spatial distribution varies substantially. The results of the decoupling analysis demonstrate that the predominant types of correlations among the land use ELF and PDF and LVF over the research period are strong decoupling and strong negative decoupling correlations, with the former being a dilemma and the latter being a sustainable type of development. Land use/cover change (LUCC) is a vital aspect representing global change and humans' impact on Earth's surface. This study utilized the ESRI Land Cover 2020 and China Land Cover Dataset (CLCD), along with historical imagery from Google Earth, to develop a method for the assessment of land use data quality. Based on the assessment, the CLCD was updated to generate an improved Re-CLCD for the Pan-Pearl River Basin (PPRB) from 1985 to 2020, and to analyze LUCC in the PPRB over the past 35 years. The results indicate the following: (1) Among the seven land uses, built-up land experienced the most dramatic change, followed by cropland, forestland, grassland, shrubland, waterbody, and bare land, with notable increases in built-up land and forestland, and rapid decreases in cropland, grassland, and shrubland. (2) The magnitude of land use changed very widely, with the highest change in the Pearl River Delta, followed by small coastal river basins in southern Guangdong and western Guangxi, the Dongjiang River Basin, the Hanjiang River Basin, the Xijiang River Basin, the Beijiang River Basin, and lastly, Hainan Island. (3) The largest increase happened in built-up land, with a total increase of 12,184 km2, mainly due to the occupation of cropland and forestland, corresponding to the highest decrease in cropland, with a net loss of 10,435 km2, which was primarily converted to forestland and built-up land. The study results are valuable in providing a scientific basis for policy overhaul regarding land resources and management to safeguard ecological balance and promote sustainable development in the Pan-Pearl River Basin. Land-use change may significantly influence streamflow. The semi-empirical model PhosFate was used to analyze the impact of land use and climate change on streamflow by choosing the Guishui watershed as a pilot site and then expanding, applying it to all of North China. The Guishui watershed (North Beijing, China) has experienced a dramatic decline in its streamflow in recent decades. Parallel to this, significant land-use change has happened in this area; afforestation programs have increased forest cover from 41% (1980) to 59% (2013) and a similar increase in forest cover can also be observed in North China. Managing flow decline requires separating climatic and direct human-influenced effects. The results showed the following: (1) Afforestation is a major factor that decreased total flow in the Guishui watershed from 1996 to 2014; total flow increased by around 24% more than the actual dataset in the constant scenario (no afforestation) and decreased by 5% more than the actual dataset in the forest scenario (all agriculture land use transferred to forests). (2) When forest coverage increases, the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau and the Loess Plateau are the most sensitive areas regarding total flow in North China; the total flow change rate increased by up to 25% in these two areas when land use shifted from sparse vegetation to mixed forests. After analyzing the contributions of these two factors, we formulated recommendations on future afforestation practices for North China. In the central–north and northwest districts, the annual precipitation is under 520 mm and 790 mm, respectively, and the practice of afforestation should be more carefully planned to prevent severe damage to streams. According to many authors, hydrological modelling is one of the fundamental techniques for determining the impacts of various environmental changes on the quantitative characteristics of the aquatic environment. This study examines the effects of landscape changes induced by the need to respond to climate change and the natural urban development of the rural setting on the discharge from the small catchment. The SWAT model was applied to a small catchment of Kopaninsky Stream in the traditional agricultural part of the Czech Republic. According to the results, the most effective approach for reducing the consequences of hydrological extremes in the catchment and retaining more water in the landscape is the properly spaced placement of grassland and forest enclaves in the developing urban structure. Accurately assessing and predicting the impacts of land use changes on ecosystem carbon stocks in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) and exploring the optimization of land use structure to increase ecosystem carbon stocks are of great practical significance for China to achieve the goal of "double carbon". In this study, we used multi-year remote sensing data, meteorological data and statistical data to measure the ecosystem carbon stock in the YRB from 2000 to 2020 based on the InVEST model, and then simulated and measured the ecosystem carbon stock under four different land use scenarios coupled with the FLUS model in 2030. The results show that, from 2000 to 2020, urban expansion in the YRB continued, but woodland and grassland grew more slowly. Carbon stock showed an increasing trend during the first 20 years, with an overall increase of 7.2 megatons, or 0.23%. Simulating the four land use scenarios in 2030, carbon stock will decrease the most under the cropland protection scenario, with a decrease of 17.7 megatons compared with 2020. However, carbon stock increases the most under the ecological protection scenario, with a maximum increase of 9.1 megatons. Furthermore, distinct trends in carbon storage were observed across different regions, with significant increases in the upstream under the natural development scenario, in the midstream under the ecological protection scenario and in the downstream under the cropland protection scenario. We suggest that the upstream should maintain the existing development mode, with ecological protection prioritized in the middle reaches and farmland protection prioritized in the lower reaches. The quantitative evaluation and prediction of ecosystem service value (ESV) in the Lhasa River Basin can provide a basis for ecological environment assessment and land-use optimization and adjustment in the future. Previous studies on the ESV in the Lhasa River Basin have focused mainly on static assessment and evolution analysis based on historical data, and have not considered future development trends. Moreover, most of the current driving factors selected in land use and ESV prediction studies are homogeneous, and do not reflect the geographical and cultural characteristics of the study area well. With the Lhasa River Basin as the research focus, 20 driving factors were selected according to the characteristics of the plateau alpine area, and the land-use changes under three developmental orientations, namely, natural evolution, ecological protection, and agricultural development, were predicted for the year 2030 with the FLUS-Markov model. Based on these predictions, the values of ecosystem services were calculated, and their spatiotemporal dynamic characteristics were analyzed. The results show that the model has high accuracy in simulating land-use change in the Lhasa River Basin, with a kappa coefficient of 0.989 and an overall accuracy of 99.33%, indicating a high applicability. The types of land use in the Lhasa River basin are dominated by the existence of grassland, unused land, and forest, with a combined proportion of 94.3%. The change trends of each land-use type in the basin under the three scenarios differ significantly, with grassland, cropland, and building land showing the most significant changes. The area of cropland increased only in the agricultural development scenario; the areas of forest and grassland increased only in the ecological protection scenario; and the expansion of building land was most effectively controlled in the ecological protection scenario. The ESV increased in all three scenarios, and the spatial distribution of the ESV per unit area in the middle and lower reaches was greater than that in the upper reaches. The ESV was the greatest in the ecological protection scenario, with grasslands, forests, and water bodies contributing more to the ESV of the basin. This study provides decision-making references for the effective utilization of land resources, ecological environmental protection planning, and urban construction in the Lhasa River Basin in the future. In the karst area, the epikarst increases the infiltration of rainfall and the depressions and conduits make water exchange frequently between surface rivers and karst aquifers. To improve simulation accuracy, we proposed the Soil and Water Assessment Tool-Genetic Algorithm-Back Propagation (SWAT-GA-BP) model. Also, the SWAT-tank model was created to elaborate the runoff processes in different karst systems. Furthermore, we designed three scenarios to study the influence of land use changes on runoff. The Zuo River Basin was selected as a case study. Compared to SWAT, the determination coefficient of the SWAT-GA-BP increased by 4.8% and the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency increased by 4.9%; the rapid flow accounted for more than 50% of the total runoff, and the slow flow for less than 10%; the contribution of the land use changes was 10.80% from 2008 to 2012 and 5.57% from 2013 to 2017. This swift progression of urbanization has led to increasingly prominent conflicts over the use of land, particularly around its supply and demand. Researchers, both in China and internationally, have underscored the inherent interconnection between urbanization and land utilization. This relationship has gradually become more complex with the development of urbanization. With the implementation of the Yellow River Basin's strategy to preserve the environment while ensuring high-quality development, the Yellow River Basin has become a focal point of attention for numerous scholars. This study centers on the 57 county-level administrative divisions within the Gansu segment of the Yellow River Basin. We employed an extensive array of methodologies, such as GIS technology, the entropy method, data envelopment analysis, the coupling coordination degree model, and the panel vector autoregressive model. We established an index system and a measurement model to evaluate the degree of urbanization and the efficiency of land use. We also investigated the coupling coordinated dynamics between these two variables, to further explore the dynamic interplay between urbanization and land use and reveal their underlying mechanisms. The conclusions are as follows. The urbanization level and efficiency of land use in the Gansu section of the Yellow River Basin have exhibited a consistent upward trajectory, albeit at levels that are not particularly high, indicating substantial room for improvement in the future. The level of coupling coordination between urbanization and land use efficiency in the Gansu section of the Yellow River Basin has shown a generally upward trend. However, the overall coordination level remains relatively low, characterized by an imbalance, with "high coupling but low coordination". Regarding spatial distribution patterns, considerable disparities exist in the level of coordination development, which generally decreases from the eastern toward the western regions. A strong reciprocal and interactive relationship exists between the urbanization level and land use efficiency. An elevated level of economic urbanization can initially stimulate land use efficiency. Similarly, the improvement in the level of population urbanization, social urbanization, and ecological urbanization tends to exert a restraining influence on the augmentation of land use efficiency. We aimed to understand how the environmental variability produced by water parameters, land use, and land cover in small streams affects aquatic hyphomycete and invertebrate assemblages associated with leaf litter. Land use and land cover were quantified in the drainage area of streams located in the subtropical portion of the Atlantic Forest. We incubated Nectandra megapotamica leaves in streams and, after 30 days, collected decomposing litter to analyze associated aquatic hyphomycetes and invertebrates. Dissolved oxygen was associated with the distribution of aquatic hyphomycetes. On the other hand, 4,068 aquatic invertebrates were found, assigned into five functional feeding groups (FFG). Native vegetation and water temperature were the variables responsible for structuring the invertebrate assemblages associated with detritus. Native vegetation, dissolved oxygen, and total dissolved nitrogen were responsible for the structuring of FFGs. Streams that showed high rates of agriculture and urbanization in the drainage area showed low leaf mass loss. Our study demonstrated that the presence of anthropic uses and reduced native vegetation in the drainage area affected the assemblages of aquatic hyphomycetes and shredders, which are key players in the process of leaf decomposition in streams. Sediment and nutrient pollution in water bodies is threatening human health and the ecosystem, due to rapid land use changes and improper agricultural practices. The impact of the nonpoint source pollution needs to be evaluated for the sustainable use of water resources. An ideal tool like the soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) can assess the impact of pollutant loads on the drainage area, which could be beneficial for developing a water quality management model. This study aims to evaluate the SWAT model's multi-objective and multivariable calibration, validation, and uncertainty analysis at three different sites of the Yarra River drainage area in Victoria, Australia. The drainage area is split into 51 subdrainage areas in the SWAT model. The model is calibrated and validated for streamflow from 1990 to 2008 and sediment and nutrients from 1998 to 2008. The results show that most of the monthly and annual calibration and validation for streamflow, nutrients, and sediment at the three selected sites are found with Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency values greater than 0.50. Furthermore, the uncertainty analysis of the model shows satisfactory results where the p-factor value is reliable by considering 95% prediction uncertainty and the d-factor value is close to zero. The model's results indicate that the model performs well in the river's watershed, which helps construct a water quality management model. Finally, the model application in the cost-effective management of water quality might reduce pollution in water bodies due to land use and agricultural activities, which would be beneficial to water management managers. Transit-oriented development (TOD) has been promoted and implemented worldwide through the efficient integration of rail transit stations and land use. However, the interactions between stations and the surrounding catchment areas (CAs) are characterized by different features of the built environment and regional development. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a quantitative classification method for rail transit stations based on the built environment within a CA and to identify the passenger flow characteristics of different types of stations to develop targeted planning and design policies. In this study, Line 1 and Line 2 within the third ring road of Xi'an City were taken as the objects, and a station classification system was constructed by taking station traffic levels and different building functions within the CA as the classification factors. Secondly, indicators of the built environment, such as six different types of functions, were calculated through refined vector modeling, and 30 typical stations were typologically analyzed. Furthermore, 10 typical types—totaling 11 stations—were selected for passenger flow monitoring, and the passenger flow characteristics of the different types of stations were summarized in terms of the dimensions of stations and exits. Finally, the correlations between the indicators of the built environment and passenger traffic for different functions were quantified. In recent years, global climate change and human alterations to land use have led to a decrease in ecosystem services, making ecosystems more vulnerable. However, unlike the well-established risk assessment frameworks used in natural disaster research, the concept of ecological risks arising from changes in land use is still in its early stages, with its nuances and assessment methodologies yet to be clearly defined. This study proposes a new framework for assessing ecological risks resulting from changes in land use in the Tarim River Basin. The framework employs a coupled PLUS and Invest model to evaluate the ecological risks of land use change under three development scenarios projected for the Tarim River Basin in Xinjiang by 2035. The findings indicate that: (1) Between 2000 and 2020, the predominant land use types in the Tarim River Basin in Xinjiang were primarily unused land, followed by grassland and cropland. Conversely, grassland, water, and construction land were relatively less prevalent. During this period, the area of unused land and cultivated land increased, while grassland, forest land, and water exhibited a declining trend. Moving forward, under the three scenarios from 2020 to 2035, land use changes in the study area are characterized by the expansion of cropland and unused land, coupled with a significant decrease in grassland area, while other land categories demonstrate minor fluctuations. (2) From 2020 to 2035, across various scenarios, the total ecosystem service within the study area demonstrates an overall increasing trend in both the northern and southern marginal zones. Specifically, under the baseline scenario, the total amount of ecosystem services in the study area decreased by 15.247% compared to 2020. Similarly, under the economic development scenario, this decrease amounted to 13.358% compared to 2020. Conversely, under the ecological protection scenario, the decrease reached 19.852% compared to 2020. (3) The structure of ecological risk levels from 2020 to 2035, across multiple scenarios, demonstrates a consistent pattern, characterized by a predominant proportion of moderate risk. Provisioning services are essential components of ecosystem services. Food production is usually a driver of land use change, which has the effect on altering the provisioning services of ecosystems. As one of the main areas of food production in China, the provisioning services of the Songhua River Basin (SHRB) should be taken seriously. In view of this, it is urgent to carry out a study on the assessment of provisioning services in the SHRB to provide data support and scientific reference for the optimization of the spatial pattern of land use in the basin, the sustainable development of agriculture, and the formulation of differentiated protection policies. In this study, based on the equivalent factor method for the unit area value and spatial autocorrelation with the Moran's I, we assessed the provisioning services values (PSV) of the SHRB every ten years during the period of 2000–2020 under different land use types and analyzed the relationships between different PSV and the production of four different food types, including rice, wheat, corn, and soja. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) From 2000 to 2020, the area of paddy fields in the SHRB increased and then decreased, while the area of dry lands continued to increase. The land use transfer matrix showed a significant expansion of paddy fields (+0.55 × 104 km2), shrinkage of grassland (−0.72 × 104 km2), and loss of water body (−0.43 × 104 km2) in the SHRB from 2000 to 2020; (2) The PSV in the SHRB showed an increasing trend from 2000 to 2020, growing by 16.73 × 1010 RMB, with the growth in 2010–2020 being greater than in 2000–2010. The order of increase in each type of PSV was: water supply > food supply > raw material supply; (3) Spatially, the increase in PSV per unit and total PSV in the SHRB was lesser in the center and greater in the east and west. Meanwhile, the spatial distribution of various PSV showed that the value of unit area food supply was higher in the central and eastern plains, while the raw material supply and water supply were higher in the western and eastern hilly areas. (4) In terms of spatial correlation, the distribution of soja production with the total PSV, food supply, raw materials supply, and water supply services values were positively spatially correlated. However, the production of rice, wheat, and corn with the total PSV, food supply, and raw materials supply services values were negatively spatially correlated. Whether China can achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) largely depends on the ability of main food-producing areas to cope with multiple land use change challenges. Despite the fact that the Yangtze River basin is one of the key regions for China's food security, the spatiotemporal dynamics of cropland abandonment and recultivation remain largely unexplored in this region. The present study assesses the evolution of the agricultural system within the Yangtze River basin between 2000 and 2020 by mapping cropland abandonment and recultivation using MODIS time series and multiple land cover products. The results highlight a widespread cropland abandonment process (i.e., 10.5% of the total study area between 2000 and 2020), predominantly in Western Sichuan, Eastern Yunnan, and Central Jiangxi. Although 70% of abandoned cropland is situated in areas with slopes less than 5°, the highest rates of abandonment are in mountainous regions. However, by 2020, 74% of this abandoned cropland had been recultivated at least once, whereas half of the abandoned croplands got recultivated within three years of their initial abandonment. Hence, as this is one of the first studies that unravels the complex interaction between cropland abandonment and recultivation in a spatiotemporal explicit context, it offers (i) scientists a novel methodological framework to assess agricultural land use issues across large geographical entities, and (ii) policy-makers new insights to support the sustainable transition of the agricultural sector. The issue of desertification is a pressing concern for many vulnerable regions, with consequences that extend far beyond their borders. It is a silent force that not only contributes to global climate change by releasing stored carbon from vegetation and soil but also compounds the ongoing environmental challenges we face on a global scale. In Morocco, the effects of these climate changes are already noticeable, particularly in terms of water scarcity due to reduced rainfall and rising temperatures. This, in turn, leads to soil drying and an increased risk of degradation. The Oum Er-Rbia watershed (upstream of Ouled Sidi Driss) is one of the basins affected by this issue, covering an area of 11,152 km² and spanning three topographic units (the Middle Atlas Mountains, the Phosphate Plateau and the Tadla Plain). This topographic diversity causes regional variation in the sensitivity to desertification. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the sensitivity to desertification in this watershed by using the MEDALUS model (Mediterranean desertification and land use), which calculates the Desertification Sensitivity Index (DSI) through the composition of four indices: the Soil Quality Index (SQI), the Vegetation Quality Index (VQI), the Climate Quality Index (CQI) and the Land Use Quality Index (LUQI). The results show that the critical and highly sensitive zones represent 44% and are located at the northeast and west ends of the watershed. By contrast, the unaffected zones represent 12% of the total area of the watershed and correspond to the upstream area, where the climate, vegetation and land use systems are of good quality, providing effective protection for the land. This comprehensive study investigates the intricate interplay between geodiversity, geohazards, and anthropogenic influences within the Kratovska Reka catchment—an area distinguished by its remarkable geosites. Kratovska Reka, spanning a length of 17.3 km, serves as the left tributary to Kriva Reka. The watershed of Kratovska Reka, covering an area of 68.5 km2, is situated on the northwestern inclines of the Osogovo Mts in North Macedonia. Despite harboring exceptional geodiversity, the area lacks protective measures for its myriad geosites. Evaluating susceptibility to geohazards, including excessive erosion, landslides, and flash floods, this research identifies heightened risk zones, particularly in the valley of Kratovska Reka and its tributaries. A multi-hazard model reveals that 56.07% of the basin is vulnerable to geohazards. The study correlates lithological composition, relief features, and morphometric characteristics with geohazards, emphasizing the significance of paleovolcanic relief in resisting excessive erosion. Human-induced factors, notably deforestation and inappropriate land use, amplify geohazards. This research underscores the urgent need for geosite protection and sustainable land management to mitigate geohazards' impacts. Additionally, it explores the correlation between land use practices and geodiversity, emphasizing the importance of responsible land management in safeguarding the geological and geomorphological values of the researched area. Rice terraces are crucial for agriculture in China's southern mountainous regions. Land use and land cover change (LUCC) in these areas impact hydrology, but our understanding is limited. In this study, we applied the hydrological assessment tool SWAT to a selected small watershed in the rice terrace-dense area of central Hunan province, China. This study covered four LUCC periods over the past 40 years and was simulated at annual and monthly scales. The results showed that from 1980 to 2020, the areas of paddy fields and drylands decreased by 4.19% and 5.76%, respectively, while the areas of forests and construction land increased by 1.14% and 92.48%, respectively. During the past period, LUCC led to a decrease of 1.77% and 2.49% in runoff and infiltration, respectively, and an increase of 1.03% in ET. However, the water yield remained almost unchanged, indicating that the rice terrace plays a positive role in maintaining stable watershed water yield under LUCC. The results of the sub-basin analysis indicated that the transformation of paddy fields and forests directly determines the trend of hydrological changes. Land use type had the most significant impact on the runoff of the rice-terrace watershed, with the proportions of paddy fields and forests being the most influential factors. Paddy fields significantly influenced the stability of runoff at the watershed scale, suggesting that a high paddy field ratio doesn't ensure sustainability. The current study investigates the joint impact of projected land use/land cover change (LULCC) and climate change on the discharge of river Puthimari using Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). Puthimari, flowing through part of Bhutan and the northeastern region of India, earns its significance by contributing a fairly huge amount of discharge to the mainstream Brahmaputra causing frequent floods downstream, specifically in the monsoon season. The analysis was carried out from 2025 to 2099, by dividing this entire period into three sub-periods, 2025‒2049, 2050‒2074, and 2075‒2099, each of 25 years duration. To evaluate the impact of climate change, this study considered future climate data of five different CMIP5 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project) climate models and their ensemble for RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 (Representative Concentration Pathways). The changes in LULC were incorporated by projecting the future LULC for 2035, 2065, and 2085 for each of the periods using the CA (Cellular Automata)-Markov model. SWAT performed well for both calibration and validation. The respective Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) values for calibration and validation were found to be 0.74 and 0.77. Also, 0.75 and 0.79 coefficient of determination (R2) values were obtained for calibration and validation, respectively. The analyses reveal a 19.76% increase in rural settlement, and a 6.30%, 16.45%, and 8.76% decrease in forest, cropland, and waterbodies in the watershed by the end of this century. The average monsoon rainfall would increase by 14.16% and 38.92%, with a corresponding increase in discharge by 34.27% and 64.67%, under RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5, respectively. This comprehensive study represents a pioneering effort to thoroughly analyze the future hydrological dynamics of the Puthimari River. Time constraints, financial limitations, and inadequate tools restrict the flood data collection in undeveloped countries, especially in the Asian and African regions. Engaging citizens in data collection and contribution has the potential to overcome these challenges. This research demonstrates the applicability of citizen science for gathering flood risk-related data on residential flooding, land use information, and flood damage to paddy fields for the Bui River Basin in Vietnam. Locals living in or around flood-affected areas participated in data collection campaigns as citizen scientists using self-investigation or investigation with a data collection app, a web form, and paper forms. We developed a community-based rainfall monitoring network in the study area using low-cost rain gauges to draw locals' attention to the citizen science program. Fifty-nine participants contributed 594 completed questionnaires and measurements for four investigated subjects in the first year of implementation. Five citizen scientists were active participants and contributed more than 50 completed questionnaires or measurements, while nearly 50% of citizen scientists participated only one time. We compared the flood risk-related data obtained from citizen scientists with other independent data sources and found that the agreement between the two datasets on flooding points, land use classification, and the flood damage rate to paddy fields was acceptable (overall agreement above 73%). Rainfall monitoring activities encouraged the participants to proactively update data on flood events and land use situations during the data collection campaign. Water has recently become a final disposal site for wastewater. Land use has evolved with the global population growth and is generally transformed into settlements and industrial areas. These land use changes could potentially increase wastewater generation from both domestic and non-domestic activities. The Garang watershed, one of the watersheds in Central Java, flows through the Semarang Regency, Kendal Regency, and Semarang City. This study analyzed the water quality conditions in the Garang watershed and designed a real-time water quality monitoring system. The methods used in this study included SWMM modeling, the national sanitation foundation water quality index (NSF-WQI), and the internet of things. Samples were collected from 10 points in the Garang Watershed, with a sampling frequency of five times at each point. The results of the data analysis demonstrated that the differences in land use resulted in varying water parameter levels. The results of the SWMM modeling demonstrated an acceptable model value (NOF between 0 and 1). On the other hand, the WQI analysis results demonstrated that the quality status at the Garang watershed is "medium" at nearly all location points. The designed real-time water quality sensor tool successfully transmitted water quality data online and in real-time, particularly for temperature, pH, turbidity, and DO. This water quality monitoring system offers a variable percentage error value, with the pH sensor ranging between 0.16% and 9.86% and the temperature sensor ranging between 0.64% and 1.72%. Exploring the mechanisms that drive land use and cover change (LUCC) is essential for informing the formulation and implementation of effective policies aimed at optimizing land use patterns. In this study, we examined the spatial and temporal patterns of LUCC within the Lancang–Mekong River Basin (LMRB) using Globeland30 data for the years 2000, 2010, and 2020. Firstly, we analyzed the quantitative characteristics of LUCC within the LMRB in terms of the value of change and rate of change. Additionally, we investigated the converting characteristics of LUCC within the LMRB by employing land use transition matrices and land use transition probability matrices. Furthermore, we depicted the spatial distribution of LUCC within the LMRB through land use mapping and statistical analysis. The results indicate a substantial decline in forests, coupled with a notable expansion in cultivated land. Given the vital role of forests as carbon sinks, reforestation can enhance ecological services and address challenges related to climate change. Converting cultivated land to forests is an effective human intervention promoting forest transition. This study applies binary logistic models to explore the mechanisms that influence the conversion from cultivated land to forests. The results reveal that slopes ranging from 5° to 15° have the lowest probability of conversion, whereas distances between the cultivated land and the nearest tourist attraction ranging from 9 km to 18 km have the highest probability. Moreover, the conversion process is positively associated with traffic conditions and significantly influenced by human interventions. Within the study area, China, Laos, and Myanmar show a tendency to convert cultivated land into natural LULC types, while Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam tend to encroach on cultivated land and expand artificial surfaces. Since 1950, European rivers have been put under increasing pressure by anthropogenic activities, resulting in changes in climate, land cover, soil properties and channel morphologies. These evolving environmental conditions can translate into changes in hydrological conditions. The availability of consistent estimates of river flow at global and continental level is a necessity to assess and attribute changes in the hydrological cycle. To overcome limitations posed by observations (incomplete records, inhomogeneous spatial coverage), we simulate river discharge for Europe for the period 1950 - 2020 using a state-of-the-art hydrological modelling approach. We use the new European set up of the LISFLOOD model, running at 1 arcminute (-1.8 km) with six-hourly time steps. The hydrological model is forced by climate reanalysis data (ERA5-land) bias-corrected and downscaled to the model resolution with weather observations. The model also ingests 72 surface fields maps representing catchment morphology, vegetation, soil properties, land use, water demand, lakes and reservoirs. Inputs related to human activities are evolving through time to emulate changes in society. The resulting Hydrological European ReAnalysis (HERA), provides sixhourly river discharge for 282 521 river pixels with upstream area > 100km2. We assess its skill using 2901 river gauging stations distributed across Europe. Overall, HERA delivers satisfying results, with a general weak underestimation of observed mean discharge and flow variability. We find that the performance of HERA increases through time between 1950 and 2020. The fine spatial and temporal resolution result in an enhanced performance compared to other reanalysis for small-to-medium-scale catchments (100-10 000 km2), with degraded performance remaining for small catchments. HERA is the first long-term, high resolution hydrological reanalysis for Europe. Despite its limitations, it enables the analysis of hydrological dynamics related to extremes, human influences, and climate change at a continental scale while keeping local relevance. Recognizing how human activities affect hydrological systems is vital for the sustainable preservation and effective management of water resources in the watershed. Hence, this paper focuses on the hydrological response to land use and land cover (LULC) change scenarios in the Anyang watershed, South Korea. We obtained LULC data maps for the years 2000, 2013, and 2022 from the local government, revealing significant changes over the years. Agricultural lands experienced a 6.2% increase from 2000 to 2022, and pastureland expanded by 8.67% over two decades. The SWAT model was utilized to assess the impact of LULC on the hydrological components of the study watershed. Model calibration and validation for each LULC change were carried out using the SWAT-CUP program, considering the recorded streamflow information of the region. An excellent agreement was reached between the simulated and measured streamflow in both the calibration and validation stages under various LULC conditions. The Nash–Sutcliffe model efficiency (NSE), the objective function, demonstrated values of 0.9, 0.89, and 0.89 during the calibration for 2000, 2013, and 2022, respectively, in the LULC scenario, while for the validation, we obtained values of 0.82, 0.78, and 0.80 for 2000, 2013, and 2022, respectively. Our findings indicate that the surface runoff rise contributed much to the water yield increase over the two decades compared to the other components in terms of the water yield, while the contribution of evapotranspiration (ET) to the watershed hydrological cycle declined by 1.66% from 2000 to 2022. This research aimed at evaluation of a given land resource suitable for selected rain fed crops production (malt barley, wheat and teff) in Ambesh watershed. It also quantified suitable land and classified into the land mapping units (LMUs), and presents a land suitability map. Land suitability assessment (LSA) made using climatic condition, topography, soil physical and chemical properties as a major factor integrated with a multi criteria decision making (MCDM) analysis in Ambesh watershed. Fourteen composite soil samples were taken by categorizing the watershed into different land mapping units (LMUs) and analyzed in a soil laboratory. Climatic data, rainfall was obtained from two meteorological stations nearby to the study area. Temperature data derived from Landsat 8 satellite thermal bands data. Data obtained from the soil laboratory and others were finally analyzed using ArcGIS environment and priority estimation tool (PriEsT) software's. Weighted Sum Overlay was implemented to investigate the final LSA map of the watershed. Results revealed that LMUs, VRe–LPq and LPK.Pq–FLc LMUs has higher overall suitability for all the selected rain fed crops. However, LMUs (VRe–NTu and NTu–VRe) has lower overall suitability values particularly for S1 suitability class (0.05% and 10.6%, respectively). The least suitable LMU is VRe–NTu with 0.05% S1 suitability class and above 99% of the land laid under the suitability classes of moderately suitable, marginally suitable and not suitable for the selected land utilization types. Moreover, about 219.06 ha (17.76%), 217.6 ha (17.64%), 168.9 ha (13.7%), of land are highly suitable for malt barley, teff and wheat crop production, respectively. In conclusion, during MCDM, classifying the land into closer homogeneities (LMU) an important application of LSA integrated with remote sensing and GIS for a better decision making. Meanwhile, majority (above two third's) of the land in the watershed is under moderate and marginally suitable, it needs intensive land management activities to increase the land qualities and obtain high yields. LSA recommended before land utilization decision has to be made. In addition to serving as North China's water supply and ecological barrier, the mountainous area of the Haihe River basin (MHRB) is a crucial location for the application of ecological engineering. Vegetation is an important component in the ecological conservation and eco-hydrological progress of the MHRB. A better understanding of regional vegetation growth can be achieved by a thorough investigation of vegetation indicators. In this research, the leaf area index (LAI) and gross primary productivity (GPP) were chosen as vegetation indicators. The characteristics and driving forces of the spatiotemporal variations of LAI and GPP in the MHRB were explored through Sen's slope, the Mann–Kendall test, the optimal parameter-based geographical detector model, and correlation analysis. From 2001 to 2018, the annual LAI and GPP increased significantly on the regional scale. The areas with significantly increased vegetation accounted for more than 81% of the MHRB. Land use was the most influential element for the spatial heterogeneity of LAI and GPP, and the humidity index was the most crucial one among climate indicators. Non-linear enhancement or bivariate enhancement was discovered between any two factors, and the strongest interaction was from land use and humidity index. The lowest vegetation cover was found in dry regions with annual precipitation below 407 mm and the humidity index under 0.41; while in both forests and large undulating mountains, higher LAI and GPP were observed. About 87% of the significantly increased vegetation was found in areas with unaltered land use. The increase in vegetation in the MHRB from 2001 to 2018 was promoted by the increased precipitation and humidity index and the reduced vapor pressure deficit. The sensitivity of GPP to climate change was stronger than that of LAI. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impacts of LULC changes on the hydrological components of a watershed using multivariate statistics, and hydrological modeling approaches. The study analyzed the LULC distributions, and changes corresponding to the years 2000, 2010, and 2020. The SWAT model was then applied to assess the hydrological impacts of these changes in the studied watershed. Finally, changes in LULC types were correlated with the water balance components using a Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) method. The result showed a continuous expansion of barren, built-up, and cropland areas, while forests, shrubs, and grassland decreased by about 67.12, 41, and 36.88%, respectively. The modeling result showed that surface runoff, water yield, and evapotranspiration decreased by 16.1, 2.9, and 9.3%, respectively. In contrast, base flow, soil water storage, and lateral flow of the watershed increased by up to 19.1%, 55.9%, and 150.4%, respectively, due to LULC changes. The PLSR model identified the cropland, forest, and shrub LULC types as the major factors affecting the water resource components. The study results provide useful information for policymakers and planners in the implementation of sustainable water resource planning and management in the context of environmental change. The land use/land cover (LULC) and climate change have detrimental impacts on the water balancing component (WBC) of a river basin, especially in the humid tropical regions. The aim of this study is to assess changes in the past, present, and future WBCs by analyzing the individual and combined impacts of both climate as well as LULC changes using the soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) model for a humid tropical Pamba river basin (PRB) in Western Ghats, India. To investigate the near (2021–2040), mid (2041–2070), and far (2071–2099) future effects of changing climate and LULC on WBCs, an ensemble of five general circulation models (GCM) with representative concentration pathways (RCPs) 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios was considered. Future LULCs for 2030, 2050, 2075, and 2100 were prepared using the Land Change Modeler (LCM) considering the normal LULC growth. The results show that the effects of LULC change increase the water yield and surface runoff while decreasing evapotranspiration (ET) throughout the study period (1988 to 2100). The climate change impacts show ET, water yield, and surface runoff decreases in the future for both RCP scenarios (except water yield, which increases only in near future for both RCPs). The trend of combined impacts on ET, water yield, and surface runoff for the future time was similar to the climate change trend. The results indicate climate change is dominant on WBCs in the future in the PRB due to variation in precipitation and temperature under both RCP 4.5 and 8.5 emission scenarios. This study will be useful for the overall water resources management of the river basin considered and the methodological framework can be adapted for other similar river basins. Due to rising land development, mitigating the negative effects of land use change is becoming a problem. Understanding how land development affects flood inundation is critical for long-term water resource management. This study evaluates the land use change in the Konkoure River Basin and its impact on flood inundation. The land use changes were assessed using Landsat image (level 1) in August 2006 and August 2021. In addition, we used GIS and remote sensing applications to assess the degree of changes that took place in the Konkoure watershed. According to the findings, 32.16% of the total area became built-up areas, and 35.51% was converted to other land uses in Konkoure watershed. Konkoure's most significant change is that 29.50% of forest area transformed into built-up areas and other land uses. The rainfall-runoff-inundation model (RRI) based inundation of the Konkoure River Basin was compared to the MODIS extent between 31 August 2006 and 30 August 2021 flood events. Flood inundation variations in the Konkoure watershed were studied in terms of inundation area, peak inundation depth, runoff volume, and the infiltration rate. As a result, the flood inundation area increased from 139.98 to 198.72 km2 and the infiltration rate decrease from 7 to 5 mm/h. Moreover, we used flow duration curves (FDCs) to fully comprehend the streamflow processes. The result indicates that the Konkoure watershed has experienced flooding partly due to land use change. In addition to changes in the amount of rain, changes in land use upstream are considered a factor that directly affects the maximum runoff flow in a basin, especially in areas that have experienced floods and flash floods. This research article presents the application of the SWAT model to assess runoff in areas that have experienced flash floods, in order to analyze the proportion of land use change to the maximum runoff. Study areas that experienced flash floods were in three basins in Thailand (Lam Saphung Basin, Phrom River Basin, and Chern River Basin Part 1, which is a sub-basin of the Nam Chi River Basin). This study analyzed two main factors that influenced runoff in the river basin by considering two simulation situations: (1) changes in land use affecting runoff assessed by considering land use maps in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2021 when using rainfall data only in the year 2021 for all cases and (2) changes in the amount of rainfall influencing runoff by considering the rainfall records in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2021 when using the land use data only in the year 2021 for all cases. The results of the study found that the SWAT model can be effectively applied to estimate annual runoff in areas that have experienced flash floods under eight parameters with R2 values of 0.74, 0.82, and 0.74 for the Lam Saphung River Basin, Phrom River Basin, and Chern River Basin Part 1, respectively. In addition, it was found that the proportion of land use changes that involved changes from forested areas to residential areas was the greatest from 2008 to 2010 in the Phrom River Basin and Chern River Basin Part 1. This resulted in an increase in the maximum runoff amounts of 77.78% and 46.87%, respectively. Global croplands, pastures, and human settlements have expanded in recent decades. This is accompanied by large increases in energy, water, and fertilizer consumption, along with considerable losses of biodiversity. In sub-Saharan Africa, policies are implemented without critical consideration; e.g., agricultural expansions impair ecosystem services. We studied land use/cover and the associated rate of change for four time epochs, i.e., 1991, 2001, 2011, and 2021. This employed remote sensing and GIS techniques for analysis, while future projections were modeled using cellular automata and the Markov chain. The kappa coefficient statistics were used to assess the accuracy of the final classified image, while reference images for accuracy assessment were developed based on ground truthing. Overall change between 1991 and 2021 showed that major percentage losses were experienced by water, forest, woodland, and wetland, which decreased by 8222 Ha (44.11%), 426,161 Ha (35.72%), 399,584 Ha (35.01%), and 105,186 Ha (34.82%), respectively. On the other hand, a percentage increase during the same period was experienced in cultivated land, built-up areas, and grasslands, which increased by 659,346 Ha (205.28%), 11,894 Ha (159.93%), and 33,547 Ha (98.47%), respectively. However, this expansion of thirsty sectors has not reversed the increasing amount of water discharged out of the Kilombero River catchment.
