This paper proposes a convolutional neural network (CNN) model of the signal distribution control algorithm (SDCA) to maximize the dynamic vehicular traffic signal flow for each junction phase. The aim of the proposed algorithm is to determine the reward value and new state. It deconstructs the routing components of the current multi-directional queuing system (MDQS) architecture to identify optimal policies for every traffic scenario. Initially, the state value is divided into a function value and a parameter value. Combining these two scenarios updates the resulting optimized state value. Ultimately, an analogous criterion is developed for the current dataset. Next, the error or loss value for the present scenario is computed. Furthermore, utilizing the Deep Q-learning methodology with a quad agent enhances previous study discoveries. In this work, the connected vehicle's messages are used to create an enhanced adaptive traffic signal control (ATSC) system for improved traffic flow. Few existing studies use connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) to develop traffic signal control algorithms under hybrid connected and autonomous conditions. The proposed approach focuses on a four‐phase traffic intersection with both CAVs and human‐driven vehicles (HVs). CAVs share real‐time state information, and a model called Roads Dynamic Segmentation estimates queuing procedures and vehicle fleet numbers on dynamic road sections. This information is used in the Store and Forward Model (SFM) to predict intersection queuing length. The ATSC system, based on model predictive control (MPC), aims to minimize intersection queue length while considering traffic constraints (undersaturated, saturated, and oversaturated) and avoiding free‐flow problems due to queue overflow. To reduce computational complexity, a linear‐quadratic‐regulator (LQR) is used. Real‐world vehicle trajectories and the SUMO tool are used for experimental purposes. Results show that the proposed method reduces average delay by 38.50% and 33.42% compared to fixed timing and traditional MPC in cases of oversaturated traffic flow with 100% CAV penetration. Even with a penetration rate of only 20%, average delay decreases by 13.65% and 6.50%, respectively. This study showcases not only the potential benefits of CAV in enhancing traffic, but also enables the optimal utilization of green duration in signalized intersection control systems. Global urbanization and increasing traffic volume have intensified traffic congestion throughout transportation infrastructure, particularly at toll plazas, highlighting the critical need to implement proactive transportation infrastructure solutions. Traditional toll plaza management approaches, often relying on manual interventions, suffer from inefficiencies that fail to adapt to dynamic traffic flow and are unable to produce preemptive control strategies, resulting in prolonged queues, extended travel times, and adverse environmental effects. This study proposes a proactive traffic control strategy using advanced technologies to combat toll plaza congestion and optimize traffic management. The approach involves deep learning convolutional neural network models (YOLOv7–Deep SORT) for vehicle counting and an extended short-term memory model for short-term arrival rate prediction. When projected arrival rates exceed a threshold, the strategy proactively activates variable speed limits (VSLs) and ramp metering (RM) strategies during peak hours. The novelty of this study lies in its predictive and adaptive capabilities, ensuring efficient traffic flow management. Validated through a case study at Ravi Toll Plaza Lahore using PTV VISSIMv7, the proposed method reduces queue length by 57% and vehicle delays by 47% while cutting fuel consumption and pollutant emissions by 28.4% and 34%, respectively. Additionally, by identifying the limitations of conventional approaches, this study presents a novel framework alongside the proposed strategy to bridge the gap between theory and practice, making it easier for toll plaza operators and transportation authorities to adopt and benefit from advanced traffic management techniques. Information about spatial distribution (OD flows) is a key element in traffic management systems in urban transport networks that enables efficient traffic control and decisions to redirect traffic to less congested sections of the network in emergencies. With the development of modern techniques of remote sensing, more and more advanced methods are used to measure traffic and determine OD flows. However, they may produce results with different levels of errors caused by various factors. The article examines the impact of traffic volume and its variability on the error values of short-term prediction of the OD matrix in the urban network. The OD flows were determined using a deep learning network based on data obtained from video remote sensing devices. These data were recorded at earlier intervals concerning the forecasting time. The extent to which there is a correlation between the size of OD flows and the prediction error was examined. The most frequently used measure of prediction accuracy, i.e., MAPE (mean absolute percentage error), was considered. The analysis carried out made it possible to determine the ranges of traffic flow rate for which the MAPE stabilizes at the level of approximately 6%. A set of video remote sensing devices was used to collect spatiotemporal data. They were located at the entrances and exits from the study area on important roads of a medium-sized city in Poland. The conclusions obtained may be helpful in further research on improving methods to determine OD matrices and estimate their reliability. With recent technological advancements, the commercialization of autonomous vehicles (AVs) is expected to be realized soon. However, it is anticipated that a mixed traffic of AVs and human-driven vehicles (HVs) will persist for a considerable period until the Market Penetration Rate reaches 100%. During this phase, AVs and HVs will interact and coexist on the roads. Such an environment can cause unpredictable and dynamic traffic conditions due to HVs, which results in traffic problems including traffic congestion. Therefore, the routes of AVs must be controlled in a mixed traffic environment. This study proposes a multi-objective vehicle routing control method using a deep Q-network to control the driving direction at intersections in a mixed traffic environment. The objective is to distribute the traffic flow and control the routes safely and efficiently to their destination. Simulation results showed that the proposed method outperformed existing methods in terms of the driving distance, time, and waiting time of AVs, particularly in more dynamic traffic environments. With the increasing number of urban vehicles, as well as the current situation of non-intelligent traffic control systems, spatiotemporal non-uniform traffic resource occupation, and limited traffic planning and design, existing urban traffic planning methods cannot effectively solve problems such as frequent traffic congestion and uncontrollable commuting time for residents. In order to solve the above problems, this paper first constructs a multi-queue, multi-server queuing model based on the server vacation and a multi-hop cascaded queuing model from the perspective of local intersections and global commuting paths. We analyze the theoretical changes in passage delay costs at local intersections and on global commuting paths as a function of traffic flow and the random duration of traffic signals. On this basis, this article proposes a collaborative intelligent traffic planning algorithm based on artificial intelligence, which utilizes traffic sensors to dynamically perceive traffic congestion status and collaboratively plans the optimal duration of traffic signals and the optimal driving path of vehicles from both local and global perspectives, thereby maximizing the on-time arrival ratio of vehicles while ensuring the required commuting delay. The simulation results show that the proposed method can increase the on-time arrival ratio of vehicles by at least 20% compared to contrast methods while meeting the requirements relating to commuting delays. The alleviation of traffic congestion relies on efficient traffic control and traffic guidance, which are based on real-time short-term traffic flow prediction. In this paper, the stacked autoencoder (SAE) deep learning model with powerful feature learning capability is selected to predict the traffic flow on road sections. The process of training SAE includes the pre-training phase and the fine-tuning phase, which mainly apply the BP algorithm. However, the process of training SAE is time-consuming and cannot meet the real-time performance of modern application systems. This paper proposes a parallel training strategy for the SAE prediction model based on data parallel mode. The gradient solution process in our algorithm satisfies the conditions of parallel computing, so the training process can be designed in a parallel manner. The original dataset is distributed to some computing nodes, which are work nodes. The work node is responsible for gradient calculation using the local data. The task of the sole master node is to synthesize the gradient calculation results and then broadcast the updated gradient to each work node. The simulation results show that the SAE-based prediction model achieves better results than the traditional model, and the parallel algorithm reduces the running time of training processes. Cities face a significant challenge due to increasing traffic congestion and the rising number of vehicles. Developed countries have introduced smart traffic management systems as a solution to mitigate congestion and improve traffic flow. These systems employ various techniques such as image processing, radar sensing, ultrasonic and microwave detectors, and other sensors. However, each of these methods has its drawbacks, including susceptibility to weather conditions, high costs, and low accuracy. Intelligent traffic control methods like inductive loop detection, wireless sensor networks, and video data analysis have proven to be efficient. However, they suffer from lengthy installation processes and high installation and maintenance expenses. In response to this issue, this article proposes a system that can detect lane density and adjust traffic signal timers accordingly to optimize traffic flow. The proposed system utilizes IR sensors and load sensors to calculate the density of each lane at an intersection, and an RFID system is implemented to accommodate emergency response vehicles. This system is centered around an ATmega 2560 chip. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, real-time experiments were conducted on a scaled-down model of the system. Traffic operation efficiency is greatly impacted by the increase in travel demand and the increase in vehicle ownership. The continued increase in traffic demand has rendered the importance of controlling traffic, especially at intersections. In general, the inefficiency of traffic scheduling leads to traffic congestion, resulting in a rise in fuel consumption, exhaust emissions, and poor quality of service. Various methods for time series forecasting have been proposed for adaptive and remote traffic control. The prediction of traffic has attracted profound attention for improving the reliability and efficiency of traffic flow scheduling while reducing congestion. Therefore, in this work, we studied the problem of the current traffic situation at Muhima Junction one of the busiest junctions in Kigali city. Future traffic rates were forecasted by employing long short-term memory (LSTM) and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models, respectively. Both the models' performance criteria for adequacy were the mean absolute error (MAE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and root mean squared error (RMSE). The results revealed that LSTM is the best-fitting model for monthly traffic flow prediction. Within this analysis, we proposed an adaptive traffic flow prediction that builds on the features of vehicle-to-infrastructure communication and the Internet of Things (IoT) to control traffic while enhancing the quality of service at the junctions. The congestion caused by ramp overflow has an essential impact on the energy consumption of autonomous vehicles. It is urgent to solve the energy waste of ramp overflow on connected and autonomous vehicles and improve the energy utilization rate. Aiming at the traffic congestion caused by ramp overflow, this paper obtains the data of autonomous vehicles and traffic flow based on vehicle road cooperative perception, analyzes the impact mechanism of vehicle energy consumption, and summarizes the energy consumption modes of autonomous vehicles into three categories. Second, an energy consumption evaluation framework is proposed based on the CSANS strategy. This strategy can make up for the deficiency of constructing neighborhoods within European distance, find important influencing variables on connected and autonomous vehicles' energy consumption, and accurately capture the manifold characteristics of energy consumption data. Finally, flow control is carried out from the macro perspective of traffic engineering to optimize ramp overflow's impact on autonomous vehicles' energy consumption. Lane-changing prewarning is an active management measure used to mitigate the impact of incidents on expressways. This measure affects the operational efficiency and safety of traffic flow upstream of the incident location. To evaluate the effectiveness of this measure in mitigating incident-induced congestion and enhancing traffic safety, it is essential to model and simulate traffic flow on expressways, followed by analyzing the simulation results. In this study, we use the lane-changing selection cell transmission model (ls-CTM) to investigate the impact of setting lane-changing prewarning information on expressway traffic flow. By enhancing the composition of flow within the diverging cell in CTM, traffic can determine its downstream direction based on lane-changing probability rather than the path. A case study was conducted to investigate the impact of prewarning distances of 50, 100, and 150 m on road operational efficiency and traffic safety under different traffic volumes. The effectiveness and applicability of three measures to improve traffic safety were also summarized. The timely and accurate forecasting of urban road traffic is crucial for smart city traffic management and control. It can assist both drivers and traffic controllers in selecting efficient routes and diverting traffic to less congested roads. However, estimating traffic volume while taking into account external factors such as weather and accidents is still a challenge. In this research, we propose a hybrid deep learning framework, double attention graph neural network BiLSTM (DAGNBL), that utilizes a graph neural network to represent spatial characteristics and bidirectional LSTM units to capture temporal dependencies between features. Attention modules are added to the GNN and BLSTM to find high-impact attention weight values for the chosen road section. Our model offers the best prediction accuracy with a mean absolute percentage error of 5.21% and a root mean squared error of 4. Traffic congestion is a major concern in urban centers, as it can affect society, the environment, and the economy. There are many studies on the use of computational intelligence (CI) to improve mobility in urban centers. Some of these researches focus on developing strategies for traffic light programming, since traffic coordination is complex due to its many parameters, variables, and dynamic behavior, and also an inefficient traffic control plan can lead to increased delays and contribute to traffic congestion. Although there are many works in the literature on strategies for traffic control, there are still some contributions and gaps to be filled, especially because some studies do not consider the automatic optimization of traffic signals in real time, that is, according to the demand of vehicles on the roads, considering multiple objectives and the use of a network of intersections in their experiments. In addition, some of the proposed models are not independent of simulation to evaluate the solutions of CI algorithms, resulting in a more complex deployment in real situations. In this context, this paper presents a new method to optimize traffic light plan in a network of intersections and in real time, called Active Control of Traffic Signals (ACTS) associated with the Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm, considering multiple objectives in the optimization process (minimizing the average delay time and the number of vehicles stops per cycle). To test the applicability of the model, a real dataset of vehicle demand collected by the Company of Transport and Traffic of Belo Horizonte (BHTrans) is loaded into the AIMSUN simulator, then the method is applied and compared with the current traffic control plan used by BHTrans. The results show that the ACTS method reduces the average vehicle delay by almost half compared to the results obtained with the current solution used by BHTrans. Multiplex networks have proven to be valuable tools for modeling and analyzing real complex system. Extensive work has been done on the traffic dynamics on multiplex networks, but there remains a lack of sufficient attention towards studying routing strategies for the purpose of suppressing epidemic spreading. In this paper, the impact of global awareness routing (GAR), improved global awareness routing (IGAR), and improved active routing (IAR) strategies on traffic-driven epidemic spreading are investigated. Our findings indicate that in the case of infinite node-delivery capacity and no traffic congestion in the network, adjusting routing parameters can effectively suppress epidemic spreading. In this context, these three strategies show better abilities on the multiplex network built by WS or ER model to minimize the density of infected nodes, thus contributing to the overall inhibition of the epidemic spread. However, in the multiplex network constructed by BA model, GAR strategy has a promoting effect on epidemic spreading compared with the shortest routing strategy. In addition, by controlling traffic flow, limiting node delivery capabilities can contain outbreaks. Our results suggest that adopting appropriate routing strategies in multiplex networks can play a proactive role in controlling epidemic spreading. Platooning is generally known as a control method for driving a group of connected and automated vehicles in motorway context. Nevertheless, platoon control might also work on urban roads. One possible strategy to increase overall road traffic performance and to reduce congestion in urban traffic networks is to combine platooning with traffic signal control at intersections. The traffic flow can be maximized with coordinated scheduling of traffic signals together with platooning activities, resulting in decreased travel times and fuel consumption. This paper investigates several aspects of this combined control, such as the procedures for coordination and communication between platooning vehicles and traffic signals. Efficient algorithms are suggested to optimize platoon formation and dissolution at junctions and to change traffic signal phases depending on platoon arrival and departure times. Traffic forecasting is an important task for transportation engineering as it helps authorities to plan and control traffic flow, detect congestion, and reduce environmental impact. Deep learning techniques have gained traction in handling such complex datasets, but require expertise in neural architecture engineering, often beyond the scope of traffic management decision-makers. Our study aims to address this challenge by using neural architecture search (NAS) methods. These methods, which simplify neural architecture engineering by discovering task-specific neural architectures, are only recently applied to traffic prediction. We specifically focus on the performance estimation of neural architectures, a computationally demanding sub-problem of NAS, that often hinders the real-world application of these methods. Extending prior work on evolutionary NAS (ENAS), our work evaluates the utility of zero-cost (ZC) proxies, recently emerged cost-effective evaluators of network architectures. These proxies operate without necessitating training, thereby circumventing the computational bottleneck, albeit at a slight cost to accuracy. Our findings indicate that, when integrated into the ENAS framework, ZC proxies can accelerate the search process by two orders of magnitude at a small cost of accuracy. These results establish the viability of ZC proxies as a practical solution to accelerate NAS methods while maintaining model accuracy. Our research contributes to the domain by showcasing how ZC proxies can enhance the accessibility and usability of NAS methods for traffic forecasting, despite potential limitations in neural architecture engineering expertise. The aim of this manuscript is to detect recent trends in air transport research through a bibliometric analysis. We retrieved all articles published between 2013 and 2022 in the Q1 of the Transportation ranking of the Social Sciences Citation Index published in the Journal Citations Reports (Q1-T), and in the Journal of Air Transport Management. Among these records, we retained for the analysis the articles related to air transport. Analyzing the author keywords of articles and retaining the Top 10 cited articles in each of the samples, we identified six research topics for each of the samples. Both samples share the topics of Industry Analysis, Air Traffic Management and COVID-19 and Air Transport. The specific topics of Q1-T sample are High Speed Rail and Air Transport, Environmental Impact of Air Transport and UAV and Urban Air Mobility. We also found that materials of Q1-T are mainly written from the regulator perspective, and JATM materials from the perspective of airport and airline managers. We believe that these results are useful for administrators evaluating air transport academics, and air transport academics themselves looking for new avenues of research and stakeholders of the air transport industry interested in evidence-based decision making. In the last decade, in Europe and the US, carsharing has become a mainstream transportation mode offering a sustainable solution to serious urban problems such as pollution, economic crisis, congestion, and parking. In Greece, carsharing is currently entering its commercial phase. Planners and providers strive to gain an insight into the factors influencing the use of carsharing to effectively implement carsharing systems (CSS). In this context, understanding the motives and usage conditions are considered necessary. Based on a qualitative analysis (semi-constructed interviews, n = 52), this paper identifies motivational patterns as well as personal characteristics of potential users that can be further explored through quantitative research methods. During the data analysis process, participants' responses were classified into categories that revealed not only the factors that motivated them but also unveiled the challenges they face when utilizing carsharing schemes. These factors were the following: familiarity, comfort, mindset, everyday life, usability, and economy. Next, these factors were analyzed further based on the personal characteristics of the respondents preparing the ground for quantitative research in future research initiatives. Notably, the present findings could be beneficial to operators, policymakers, and stakeholders endeavoring to appraise shared mobility schemes in Greece and Mediterranean countries in general. Climate change has a detrimental impact on permafrost soil in cold regions, resulting in the thawing of permafrost and causing instability and security issues in infrastructure, as well as settlement problems in pavement engineering. To address these challenges, concrete pipe pile foundations have emerged as a viable solution for reinforcing the subgrade and mitigating settlement in isolated permafrost areas. However, the effectiveness of these foundations depends greatly on the mechanical properties of the interface between the permafrost soil and the pipe, which are strongly influenced by varying thawing conditions. While previous studies have primarily focused on the interface under frozen conditions, this paper specifically investigates the interface under thawing conditions. In this study, direct shear tests were conducted to examine the damage characteristics and shear mechanical properties of the soil-pile interface with a water content of 26% at temperatures of −3 °C, −2 °C, −1 °C, −0.5 °C, and 8 °C. The influence of different degrees of melting on the stress–strain characteristics of the soil-pile interface was also analyzed. The findings reveal that as the temperature increases, the shear strength of the interface decreases. The shear stress-displacement curve of the soil-pile interface in the thawing state exhibits a strain-softening trend and can be divided into three stages: the pre-peak shear stress growth stage, the post-peak shear stress steep drop stage, and the post-peak shear stress reconstruction stage. In contrast, the stress curve in the thawed state demonstrates a strain-hardening trend. The study further highlights that violent phase changes in the ice crystal structure have a significant impact on the peak freezing strength and residual freezing strength at the soil-pile interface, with these strengths decreasing as the temperature rises. Additionally, the cohesion and internal friction angle at the soil-pile interface decrease with increasing temperature. It can be concluded that the mechanical strength of the soil-pile interface, crucial for subgrade reinforcement in permafrost areas within transportation engineering, is greatly influenced by temperature-induced changes in the ice crystal structure. Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) offer the potential to improve roadway capacity and safety. Thus, improving road infrastructure condition could be prioritized to eliminate further degradation of the transportation infrastructure. In order to foster the adoption of CAVs, incentives can be used; but there is a need to identify what type of incentive would be most effective. To identify effective incentive types, this study uses electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid vehicles as a surrogate to CAVs because of the similarities in obstacles faced for wider adoption. This study then provides some recommendations by examining incentives offered in 15 different countries and by reviewing the literature on the effectiveness of incentive types. Electric automated vehicles (AVs) are expected to become part of the transportation system within the coming years. The implications of their implementation are still uncertain. What is known is that human behaviour will be central to determining AV adoption. This research aims to gain insight into how potential users of privately owned (PAVs) and shared (SAV) electric automated vehicles are characterised across three different continents assessing the influence of cultural and geographic features, personal attitudes and characteristics and the perceived advantages and disadvantages of AVs. Using survey data collected among residents (N = 1440) in Greater Sydney, Australia; Greater Montréal, Canada; and the Randstad, the Netherlands, this paper explores individuals' willingness to adopt PAVs and SAVs using statistical descriptive analysis and logistic regression models. The study supports the impact of personal characteristics (e.g., age and travel characteristics) and attitudes towards personal and societal gains on the willingness to adopt AVs. Furthermore, this paper provides cross-continental evidence for the regional socio-urban context, affecting the desire to adopt AVs in different forms. Policy-makers should consider these factors and tailor different strategies according to cultural norms in order to motivate a coherent and sustainable implementation of AVs into existing and future mobility landscapes. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown to be a global challenge that, in addition to other effects, has influenced travel behavior. This study examines factors affecting academic travelers' mode choice before and during the pandemic and factors contributing to sustainable transportation on campus. By examining their travel patterns and behaviors, we contribute to understanding transportation preferences and identifying opportunities for sustainable transportation on university campuses. Studying academic travelers is crucial as they are significant daily travelers with a substantial impact on transportation systems and the environment. Understanding their mode choices helps transportation planners and policymakers promote sustainable transportation options. The literature has identified influential factors in making trips to university campuses, including age, gender, accommodation, cost, and travel time. However, cross-sectional studies involving comprehensive variables are lacking and the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on transportation has not been thoroughly evaluated. To address this gap, the current study aims to evaluate novel variables, including intra-transport modes, entry permits, accessibility, parking availability, occupations, level of study, travel purpose, and visit frequency. The University of Isfahan, accessible by all modes of transport, was selected as the study area. After analyzing the questionnaire and variables using SPSS software (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 22.0 Released 2013), travel behavior was studied by discrete choice models and the models' coefficients were estimated using NLOGIT. The finding demonstrated that using private modes (taxi, private vehicle, and active modes) increased in response to the pandemic, while using public modes (bus or subway) represented a decline. Before and during the pandemic, most people who had the same trip purpose shifted from taking the bus to using private vehicles and active transportation. Generally, people became more inclined to walk on campus during the pandemic. This article investigates if the impact of weather conditions on mode choice (walking, riding a bike, driving a car, and using public transport) differs across spatial areas. For this purpose, a survey-based data set with more than 500,000 trips in Germany was enriched with weather conditions prevailing at the closest weather station to the point of departure at the moment of the start of the trip. In addition, the points of departure of each trip were classified into seven different spatial areas. The analysis relied on separate multinomial logit models carried out for each spatial area with mode choice as the dependent variable. The independent variables consisted of non-weather-related factors such as sex, age, car availability, level of education, etc., and various weather-related variables such as air temperature, amount of precipitation, and wind speed. The results show that weather conditions have a rather marginal impact on mode choice, with the exception of riding a bike, which constitutes the mode of transport that is most affected by weather conditions in all spatial areas. However, the impacts tend to be smaller in densely populated urban metropolises than in peripheral, rural areas. The successful deployment of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) requires the safe integration of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in non-segregated airspace. However, a lack of practical deployment demonstrations can slow the regulatory progress. This study presents a practical deployment framework for the integration of eVTOL aircraft into public airspace, in accordance with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) special airworthiness criteria. This study focused on a corporate use case to provide a comprehensive scenario for enhancing intra-company mobility. The scenario supports early implementation and demonstration goals by removing reliance on air traffic management systems or air traffic controller separation services. The practical deployment framework included facility selection, route planning, terrain mapping, collision avoidance, aircraft selection, infrastructure requirements, vertiport placement, electric chargers, ground handling, operational staff, and cost estimates. Climate protection goals in transportation can only be achieved with a worldwide change in mobility behavior that is supported by technological progress and changes in vehicle concepts. One contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions may be using small and light electric vehicles (LEVs) instead of cars. LEVs have a favorable ratio of vehicle weight to payload and the efficiency of electric drives contributes to environmental sustainability. As with full-sized electrically powered cars, emissions from combustion processes are eliminated. Going beyond that, the traction batteries in LEVs can be considerably smaller, thereby reducing the consumption of critical raw materials and lowering production-related greenhouse gas emissions. Against this background, we present the results of a study which aimed to determine what proportion of current passenger car trips in Germany could, in theoretical terms, be covered by LEVs. Our estimation of the substitution potential of LEVs for car trips is based on the 2017 Mobility in Germany (MiD) survey, a national household travel survey (NHTS) containing the data of 960,619 trips. Many different types of vehicles, ranging from e-scooters, cargo bikes, and pedelecs to three- and four-wheeled light electric vehicles, are considered. The results show that up to 76% of car trips and 50% of car mileage could theoretically be substituted by LEVs. The results are further analyzed to determine for which trip purposes and age groups the greatest substitution potential exists. Based on the results, we discuss ways for supporting the realization of this potential as well as factors that determine whether the theoretically calculated potential can be realized. This review paper examines the appropriateness of a hyperloop line between Mumbai and Pune in India, examining, in particular, its potential economic implications and impact on people. This assessment builds on an earlier in-depth examination by the authors of the key urban and transport planning, technical, environmental, economic and human factors surrounding the hyperloop technology. The current detailed analysis of hyperloop's expected implications in the Mumbai to Pune corridor is based upon use of a wide variety of existing indicative data from many sources, which are sufficient to provide a very broad "first-step" reality testing of hyperloop's suitability to India. It could be argued that this is precisely the kind of analysis that should have been conducted, or at least made public, prior to committing to hyperloop in India. The paper highlights many negatives concerning hyperloop's construction and operation, including a very high capital cost compared to other needed urban transport infrastructure projects in India, a potential lack of patronage due to a range of factors and its potentially exclusive upper income patronage cohort. It is concluded that rather than making a costly mistake, India should address current urban mobility challenges and needs such as bus rapid transit (BRT) and metros in its innumerable cities, whose construction costs are vastly lower than the expected cost of a single hyperloop line. Technology, such as the hyperloop, would need time to mature and gain operational experience. Should any corridor be found suitable, there would still need to be a thorough, detailed benefit–cost analysis together with a dedicated examination of the technology's broader urban planning implications and less tangible factors. Shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs) aspire to change not only vehicles but also the way people and goods move in urban areas. However, the promotion of such services, that is, whether travelers are willing to share their trips with other service users, is still a challenge. This study aims to examine the contributory factors that influence the willingness of individuals to use shared autonomous vehicles by simultaneously identifying the differences in terms of preferences with conventional competitive transport modes, namely, private cars and public transport. A stated preference experiment combined with perception ratings was designed and conducted in Athens, Greece. Based on the collected responses, a multinomial logit model was estimated. The results show that the flexibility of SAVs and, particularly, the possibility of performing door-to-door trips has a serious added value that travelers are willing to pay. Compared with public transport, additional waiting time does not increase the disutility. Furthermore, people who belong to high-education and -income groups expressed a higher willingness to use SAVs and socialize while traveling. The familiarity of each potential user with technology is a necessary precondition. Lastly, it is confirmed that environmentally conscious people are more positive about using these new services. This paper presents a comprehensive review of centrality measures and their usefulness in transportation networks in the face of climate change adaptation. The focus is on understanding the importance of transportation nodes in the event of extreme weather events and climate-related disasters that may render them inoperable. The paper argues that if critical nodes can be identified, they can be better protected, while resources can be allocated to ensure their functioning in the event of such events. The paper assesses 17 centrality measures, including degree, closeness, betweenness, eigenvector, and Katz, and evaluates their usefulness and usability in transportation networks. The review highlights the need to reformulate these measures to take into account traffic- and transport-related parameters and variables. Without this reformulation, centrality measures only reveal node importance in a topological or structural way and fail to capture the true significance of the nodes in a transportation network. The reformulation enables the centrality measures to be properly applied in a transportation network and to expose the significance of their elements. This work has important implications for transportation planners and policy-makers in ensuring the resilience of critical transportation infrastructure in the face of climate-related disasters. Mobility management is a regulatory framework designed to streamline systematic mobility and mitigate energy, environmental and economic impacts. In this work, we propose a flexible methodology for evaluating the sustainability of home-to-work travel, providing a comprehensive and detailed ex post cost–benefit assessment. Specifically, we analyzed the effectiveness of the shuttle service operating in the ENEA "Casaccia" Research Centre in pre-pandemic times. Initially, we conducted an online survey to collect data with the aim of characterizing the travel behavior of the staff and reconstructing the multi-modal individual mobility patterns. Over 70% of the recipients, which amounted to about 950 individuals, completed the survey. Subsequently, we studied two alternative scenarios—with and without the shuttle service—comparing their total mileage, energy consumption, and pollutant emissions and performing an economic analysis. Our findings suggest that operating the service has a significant impact on air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions, with reductions of 97% for volatile organic compounds, 72% for particulate matter, and 60% for carbon dioxide. Moreover, the cost–benefit analysis reveals that both users and the community reaped benefits from the provision of the collective service. One of the ways to address the modern traffic-related problems is to encourage people to use sustainable travel modes more regularly. Transportation planners need to find the factors that affect people's opinions toward using these modes. In this study, we investigated these factors using a case study of a developing country by distributing an online survey among the students of four universities in Tehran. The number of complete responses received was 134 from SUT, 63 for UT, 31 from AUT, and 204 from IUST, summing up to 432 responses. A binomial logistic regression model was used to find the paramount factors affecting the selection of cycling and public transportation. Our model found five and four statistically significant factors affecting preferences toward using bicycle and public transport, respectively. Several novel outcomes resulted from our study. First, expressing prestige to others resulted in the reduction of the preference of students toward cycling by 80%. Second, while a high number of the respondents are not currently using bikes to commute, a noticeable number of them are amongst the ones that will cycle in their daily commutes in an ideal condition. Third, in Iran, a religious approach is present in the society, which results in lower rates of public transport usage among females. Finally, while long commuting distance is the main barrier to cycling, travel time plays a bigger role in the preferences toward using public transportation. In the end, some practical solutions are suggested to encourage the usage of these modes. They include providing safe bicycle lanes and more space in the public transportation systems. This paper presents a two-stage fuzzy-logic application based on the Mamdani inference method to classify the observed road traffic conditions. It was tested using real data extracted from the Padua–Venice motorway in Italy, which contains a dense monitoring network that provides continuous measurements of flow, occupancy, and speed. The data collected indicate that the traffic flow characteristics of the road network are highly perturbed in oversaturated conditions, suggesting that a fuzzy approach might be more convenient than a deterministic one. Furthermore, since drivers have a vague notion of the traffic state, the fuzzy method seems more appropriate than the deterministic one for providing drivers with qualitative information about current traffic conditions. In the proposed method, the traffic states are analysed for each road section by relating them to average speed values modelled with fuzzy rules. To study the impact of traffic information in different road sections on traffic flow, a double flow controlled two-lane traffic system considering vehicle-to-infrastructure communication is introduced in this paper. The new traffic system is analyzed with Lyapunov stability theorem and a sufficient stable condition is provided in linear matrix inequality. Through simulation, the traffic flow evolution properties and energy consumption rules under different control gains and lane changing parameters are exhibited. The results show that traffic congestion and energy consumption of the two-lane traffic system can be suppressed by taking the delayed flow control information, the relative flow control information, and lane changing effect into account. Also, the role of the control strategy on traffic flow is revealed microscopically through a two-lane car-following model by transforming the macroscopic traffic flow to vehicle's velocity. It further proved the stabilization effect of the control information on traffic flow. Aiming at handling complexity of TFD, a new TFD prediction model based on complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN), neural network estimation time entropy (NNetEn), variational mode decomposition (VMD) improved by northern goshawk optimization (NGO) algorithm, kernel extreme learning machine (KELM) improved by artificial rabbits optimization (ARO) algorithm and error correction (EC) is proposed. Aiming at choosing the decomposition layers and penalty coefficient of VMD, VMD improved by NGO, named NVMD, is proposed. Aiming at handling the problem of selecting KELM parameters, KELM improved by ARO, ARO-KELM, is proposed. Firstly, CEEMDAN is used to decompose TFD into a limited number of IMF components. NNetEn is used to divide IMF components into high- and low-complexity components. The sum of high-complexity components is selected for secondary decomposition by NVMD. Then ARO-KELM is used to predict all decomposed components. Finally, error correction is introduced to further improve the prediction accuracy. TFD from England highway is used in the experiments. Taking TFD I as an example, the RMSE, MAE, MAPE and R2 are 4.5682, 3.3104, 0.0458 and 0. 9997 respectively. The results show that the proposed model is superior to the other six comparison models at 99% confidence level, which provides a theoretical and data basis for controlling traffic jams, accidents and pollution. Urbanised city transportation simulation needs a wide range of factors to reflect the influence of certain real-life events accurately. The vehicle composition and the timing of the traffic light signal scheduling play an important role in controlling the traffic flow and facilitate road users, particularly in densely populated urban cities. Since road capacity in urban cities changes throughout the day, an optimal traffic light signal duration might be different. Hence, in this paper, the effect of vehicle composition and traffic light phases on traffic flow during peak and off-peak hours in Georgetown, Penang, one of the highly populated cities in Malaysia, is investigated. Through Agent-Based Modelling (ABM), this complex system is simulated by integrating the driver's behaviour into the model using the GIS and Agent-Based Modelling Architecture (GAMA) simulation platform. The result of predicted traffic flow varies significantly depending on the vehicle composition while the duration of the traffic signal timing has little impact on traffic flow during peak hours. However, during off-peak hour, it is suggested that 20 s duration of green light provides the highest flow compared to 30 s and 40 s duration of green light. This concludes that the planning for traffic light phasing should consider multiple factors since the vehicle composition and traffic light timing for an effective traffic flow varies according to the volume of road users. Traffic flow prediction is one of the most important tasks of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) for traffic management, and it is also a challenging task affected by many complex factors, such as weather and time. Many cities adopt efficient traffic prediction methods to control traffic congestion. However, most of the existing methods of traffic prediction focus on urban road scenarios, neglecting the complexity of multivariate auxiliary information in highways. Moreover, these methods have difficulty explaining the prediction results based only on the historical traffic flow sequence. To tackle these problems, we propose a novel traffic prediction model, namely Multi-variate and Multi-horizon prediction based on Long Short-Term Memory (MMLSTM). MMLSTM can effectively incorporate auxiliary information, such as weather and time, based on a strategy of multi-horizon time spans to improve the prediction performance. Specifically, we first exploit a multi-horizon bidirectional LSTM model for fusing the multivariate auxiliary information in different time spans. Then, we combine an attention mechanism and multi-layer perceptron to conduct the traffic prediction. Furthermore, we can use the information of multivariate (weather and time) to provide interpretability to manage the model. This research paper aims to study the effect of tram management on traffic fluidity and its impact on car drivers' behaviors at junctions crossed by trams. The methodology used in this research is based on a mathematical model and an investigation of car drivers. The first step is to analyze the data of annual travelers' attendance and assess the number of trams offered and needed in operation to respond adequately to the factual demand. The second step proceeds to show how the previous results of the trams' fleet influence traffic jams. That is, this step identifies how the number of trams used in operation blocks other motorists and reduces traffic flow capacity at junctions. Finally, the purpose of the questionnaire is to determine car drivers' opinions of the causes of traffic congestion at junctions and understand how this phenomenon affects their behaviors. The outcomes demonstrate that tram management is ineffective because there is a considerable gap between the annual offered tram fleet and the actual one needed according to the real statistical data. The high number of trams utilized is the leading cause of traffic congestion. Furthermore, this situation disturbs the control of traffic lights at common intersections. Unfortunately, this outcome is the main reason for drivers' poor behavior, as 75.20% of car drivers are always stressed. These issues have intensified traffic jams in several junctions along the tram line. Mixed traffic flows are opening up new areas for research and are seen as key drivers in the field of data and services that will make roads safer and more environmentally friendly. Understanding the effects of Connected Vehicles (CVs) and Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs), as one of the vehicle components of mixed traffic flows, will make it easier to avoid traffic congestion and contribute to the creation of innovative applications and solutions. Traffic congestion is a major concern for many metropolises. Although it is difficult to regulate traffic flow because of numerous complexities and uncertainties, the traffic congestion problem must be mitigated in order to reduce the environmental problems related to traffic and the time lost on the roads in big cities. Intelligent traffic control methods, the use of which is increasing with the development of new methods, as opposed to conventional methods, and provide more efficient solutions, especially in traffic intersections with high traffic density. In this paper, we propose a new agent-based Fuzzy Logic assisted traffic light signal timing for traffic intersections. Deep Q-Learning algorithms and Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) are used together in the proposed method. In this study, the proposed method and many traffic light control methods in the literature were simulated. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, some of the important metrics of evaluation such as traffic congestion, air pollution, and waiting time were used in the assessment of the simulation results. Cooperation between intersections in large-scale road networks is critical in traffic congestion. Currently, most traffic signals cooperate via pre-defined timing phases, which is extremely inefficient in real-time traffic scenarios. Most existing studies on multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) traffic signal control have focused on designing efficient communication methods, but have ignored the importance of how agents interact in cooperative communication. To achieve more efficient cooperation among traffic signals and alleviate urban traffic congestion, this study constructs a Graph Cooperation Q-learning Network Traffic Signal Control (GCQN-TSC) model, which is a graph cooperation network with an embedded self-attention mechanism that enables agents to adjust their attention in real time according to the dynamic traffic flow information, perceive the traffic environment quickly and effectively in a larger range, and help agents achieve more effective collaboration. Moreover, the Deep Graph Q-learning (DGQ) algorithm is proposed in this model to optimize the traffic signal control strategy according to the spatio-temporal characteristics of different traffic scenes and provide the optimal signal phase for each intersection. This study also integrates the ecological traffic concept into MARL traffic signal control, which aims to reduce traffic exhaust emissions. Finally, the proposed GCQN-TSC is experimentally validated both in a synthetic traffic grid and a real-world traffic network using the SUMO simulator. The experimental results show that GCQN-TSC outperforms other traffic signal control methods in almost all performance metrics, including average queue length and waiting time, as it can aggregate information acquired from collaborative agents and make network-level signal optimization decisions. In new-tier cities with rapid urbanization, the reorganization of urban spatial functions and the development of road networks have brought novel challenges to traffic congestion control. Urban land use patterns have a significant correlation with urban traffic congestion. However, whether and how land use patterns of cities close to the roads affect road congestion is less to be discussed. This article investigated the relationship between land use patterns close to the urban trunk road network and traffic congestion in new tier cities Xi'an, China. We adopted the DBSCAN algorithm to cluster POIs and use the mixed POI clusters to label the socio-economic functions of roads. We found the spatial heterogeneity of POIs on the trunk road network and identified the impacts of the scales and types of POI on road congestion based on the empirical analysis. Compared to the POIs as origin and destination of the trips, the POIs as stopover points of the trips cause significantly more road congestion. The POIs with bidirectional flows at entrances/exits are more likely to cause road congestion than the POIs with unidirectional flows. Moreover, the POIs with flexible traffic flows increase road congestion, while the POIs with predicted traffic flows have no statistically significant correlation with road congestion. The results help urban planners to plan the scale, type, and location of POIs close to roads and to optimize the socio-economic functions of roads and alleviate road congestion. Intelligent traffic signal control is one of the important means to ensure traffic safety. Effective signal control can make traffic flow fast and smooth, which first needs current and future traffic information. As the control of one intersection may affect adjacent intersections, this paper proposes to predict future traffic flow with consideration of multi-intersections. It can dynamically improve traffic conditions and reduce traffic congestion. Based on various nonlinear spatial relationships at correlated multi-intersections and the potential time-dependent relationship in traffic volume, a traffic flow prediction method named CNNformer which combines transformer with CNN, is proposed. The convolution neural network (CNN) and transformer are used to extract the spatial and temporal features of correlated multiple intersections. The learnable time code is embedded into transformer's location code, and the location information and time information are injected into the model to help it learn the time characteristics of traffic volume. This study also considers the impact of cyclical traffic flow pattern and proposes CNNformer+. In the method, all of the data from the previous time window, as well as the data from the prior week and month, are correspondingly entered into the network. Finally, the output is generated through average pooling, realizing the learning of cyclical traffic flow characteristics. In the experiment, CNNformer+ and the state-of-the-art traffic flow prediction methods are compared using simulated data. Short‐term traffic flow prediction is particularly important for urban traffic control and congestion management. To improve the accuracy of traffic flow prediction, a new traffic flow prediction approach is proposed from the perspective of vehicle functions by using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) electronic license plate (ELP) data. First, the improved Wavelet Neural Network (WNN) is introduced by adding three momentum terms to avoid local minimum and overfitting. The Long Short‐Term Memory Neural Network (LSTM) is constructed to train the time series with long time lags. Second, a novel short‐term traffic flow prediction method is developed by combining the improved WNN and LSTM in an urban road section. The proposed method performs a weighted combination to obtain a new prediction value according to whether the difference between the prediction values of the two methods satisfy the defined threshold, and then selects the one with the smallest error among the three prediction values as the final prediction result. Third, the experiments explore the prediction performance of the weekdays and weekends with 5 min‐interval, 15 min‐interval and 30 min‐interval via using RFID‐ELP data from Chongqing, China. With the fast-expanding number of vehicles in smart cities, the management of road intersections and traffic congestion has grown to be major problems. Drivers often express their opinion that putting traffic lights on while taking traffic flows into account will have a significant impact on how traffic moves. This paper presents a smart Road traffic Control management system termed Urban Traffic Control (UTC) keeping real-time dynamic traffic flow in mind which helps in upgrading the level of road traffic network management. To provide an organized traffic arrangement, UTC presents methodologies such as vehicle counting, controlling process, and evaluation of lanes keeping status in mind, this whole procedure is implemented by taking the complete traffic network into an account instead of just considering intersections. The primary goal of our system is to lessen traffic jams by cutting down on the trip and waiting times vehicles spend at crossings and intersections. We need to assign a plan for traffic flow that has the least amount of traffic congestion and vehicle waiting time, for this purpose some indicators and models are introduced in this study. As this work is an improvement on the current Road Network without much changing, we integrate our system on normal traffic lights which allow each lane a chance to move and we also considered the no-interference lane movement. To simulate our idea, we introduced a smart road traffic control system consisting of multi-agents, by using a NetLogo stimulator. To compare the fixed cycle traffic light, several vehicles (150 in total) with random behaviour were generated and scattered over 25 different intersections for the time duration of 9 h. This setting was used to test our smart traffic control solution on both lane flow and no interference movement flow. According to the obtained results, there was a 25.98% reduction in total average waiting time over simulation period for all vehicles and a reduction of 34.16% for no interference movement flow. The increasing traffic demand in urban areas frequently causes traffic congestion, which can be managed only through intelligent traffic signal controls. Although many recent studies have focused on reinforcement learning for traffic signal control (RL-TSC), most have focused on improving performance from an intersection perspective, targeting virtual simulation. The performance indexes from intersection perspectives are averaged by the weighted traffic flow; therefore, if the balance of each movement is not considered, the green time may be overly concentrated on the movements of heavy flow rates. Furthermore, as the ultimate purpose of traffic signal control research is to apply these controls to the real-world intersections, it is necessary to consider the real-world constraints. Hence, this study aims to design RL-TSC considering real-world applicability and confirm the appropriate design of the reward function. The limitations of the detector in the real world and the dual-ring traffic signal system are taken into account in the model design to facilitate real-world application. To design the reward for balancing traffic movements, we define the average delay weighted by traffic volume per lane and entropy of delay in the reward function. Model training is performed at the prototype intersection for ensuring scalability to multiple intersections. The model after prototype pre-training is evaluated by applying it to a network with two intersections without additional training. As a result, the reward function considering the equality of traffic movements shows the best performance. In this paper, we consider a simple road intersection with traffic light control and suggest a queueing model for the traffic flow in the intersection. The suggested model implements the well-known queue with state-dependent departure rates. Using this model, we define optimal state-dependent scheduling of the traffic lights in the intersection and consider its properties. Activity of the model is illustrated by numerical simulations. It is demonstrated that in practical conditions the suggested scheduling of the traffic lights allows the prevention of traffic jams in the intersection and resolves vehicles queues with reasonable waiting times in the crossing lanes. Accurate traffic flow prediction plays a significant role in urban traffic management, including traffic congestion control and public travel route planning. Recently, several approaches have been put forward to learn the patterns from historical traffic data. However, there exist some limitations resulting from the use of the static learning method to explore the dynamical characteristics of the road network. Besides, the dynamic global temporal and spatial properties are not considered in these models. These drawbacks lead to a low prediction performance and make applying to a more extensive road network challenging. To address these issues, from the inspiration of Chebyshev polynomial, we proposed an improved dynamic Chebyshev graph convolution neural network model called iDCGCN. In the proposed approach, a novel updating method for the Laplacian matrix, which approximately constructs features from different period data, is proposed based on the attention mechanism. In addition, a novel feature construction method is proposed to integrate long-short temporal and local-global spatial features for complex traffic flow representation. Traffic congestion, accidents, and pollution are becoming a challenge for researchers. It is essential to develop new ideas to solve these problems, either by improving the infrastructure or applying the latest technology to use the existing infrastructure better. This research paper presents a high-resolution dataset that will help the research community to apply AI techniques to classify any emergency vehicle from traffic and road noises. Demand for such datasets is high as they can control traffic flow and reduce traffic congestion. It also improves emergency response time, especially for fire and health events. This work collects audio data using different methods, and pre-processed them to develop a high-quality and clean dataset. The dataset is divided into two labelled classes one for emergency vehicle sirens and one for traffic noises. One of the most serious and worsening problems in much of the world is traffic congestion, which represents an undoubted menace to the quality of urban life, including wasting of time, and environmental pollution. Therefore, this study proposes a new dynamic cooperative traffic control algorithm based on Vehicle-to-Infrastructure connections to solve this problem. The proposed model contains three parts. First of all, when each vehicle enters the communication zone, it sends its estimated range of arrival time to the control center in the intersection; then the optimal passing sequence is calculated in the control center by dynamically grouping the compatible trajectories with the respect of the related safety constraints; finally, each vehicle optimizes its appropriate speed profile based on the given optimal time and speed to enter the intersection, which is sent by the control center. Several simulation cases are executed for different traffic volumes, whose results prove that vehicles under the proposed algorithm can pass the intersection with less travel time compared with traditional traffic control methods and other algorithms. Predicting spatiotemporal congestion situations of a traffic network is a prerequisite for urban traffic control. This study proposes a spatiotemporal traffic congestion situation prediction method based on the recurrent gated unit-convolutional neural network (GRU-CNN). Considering the time and space attributes of traffic data, the third-order tensor of the traffic data is extracted from the time domain, and the GRU is used to predict the traffic flow parameters of the traffic network. Then, the third-order tensor of multisource spatiotemporal traffic data is compressed into traffic data images and combined with the spatial structure. The feature extraction technology of a CNN is used to extract and identify the traffic network congestion features. Actual urban traffic network data are selected for model verification. The multistep prediction of the traffic flow parameters effectively ensures prediction accuracy. The proposed model is trained by the actual classification dataset. The prediction results of the test set demonstrate the model's reliability. Based on predicting the traffic parameters of the network, this model can give a highly accurate judgment of the traffic situation for the entire network.
