Search

Unambiguous identification of the superconducting order parameter symmetry of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ has remained elusive for more than a quarter century. While a chiral $p$-wave ground state analogue to superfluid $^3$He-$A$ was ruled out only very recently, other proposed $p$-wave scenarios are still viable. Here, field-dependent $^{17}$O Knight shift measurements are compared to corresponding specific heat measurements, previously reported. We conclude that the shift results can be accounted for by the expected field-induced quasiparticle response only. Due to their peculiar quasiparticle excitations, topological metals have high potential for applications in the fields of spintronics, catalysis, and superconductivity. Here, by combining spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, and density functional theory, we discover surface-termination-dependent topological electronic states in the recently discovered mitrofanovite Pt3Te4. Mitrofanovite crystal is formed by alternating, van der Waals bound layers of Pt2Te2 and PtTe2. Our results demonstrate that mitrofanovite is a topological metal with termination-dependent (i) electronic band structure and (ii) spin texture. Despite their distinct electronic character, both surface terminations are characterized by electronic states exhibiting strong spin polarization with a node at the Γ point and sign reversal across the Γ point, indicating their topological nature and the possibility of realizing two distinct electronic configurations (both of them with topological features) on the surface of the same material.

We predict that CeBi in the ferromagnetic state is a Weyl semimetal. Our calculations within density functional theory show the existence of two pairs of Weyl nodes on the momentum path $(0, 0, k_z)$ at $15$ meV} above and $100$ meV below the Fermi level. Two corresponding Fermi arcs are obtained on surfaces of mirror-symmetric (010)-oriented slabs at $E=15$ meV and both arcs are interrupted into three segments due to hybridization with a set of trivial surface bands. By studying the spin texture of surface states, we find the two Fermi arcs are strongly spin-polarized but in opposite directions, which can be detected by spin-polarized ARPES measurements. Our theoretical study of quasiparticle interference (QPI) for a nonmagnetic impurity at the Bi site also reveals several features related to the Fermi arcs. Specifically, we predict that the spin polarization of the Fermi arcs leads to a bifurcation-shaped feature only in the spin-dependent QPI spectrum, serving as a fingerprint of the Weyl nodes., 9 pages with 9 embedded figures. We show that the annihilation dynamics of excess quasi-particles in superconductors may result in the spontaneous formation of large spin-polarized clusters. This presents a novel scenario for spontaneous spin polarization. We estimate the relevant scales for aluminum, finding the feasibility of clusters with total spin $S \simeq 10^4 \hbar$ that could be spread over microns. By utilizing symmetry analysis and electronic structure calculations, we investigated the low-temperature orthorhombic phase of Ag$_{2}$Se in ${\cal SG}$~17. In addition to the discovery of a nodal plane at $k_{z}=\pi$ protected by the joint operation of time-reversal (${\cal T}$) and the 2-fold screw rotation $S_{2z}$, we found 24 Weyl points mainly residing at the $k_{y}=0$ plane with notable Fermi arc and large quasiparticle interference pattern (QPI). Due to the absence of mirror symmetry, a pair of Weyl points with opposite chirality reside at different binding energies, which makes this system an excellent material candidate for realizing the novel chiral anomaly related phenomenon, such as the quantized circular photogalvanic and the chiral magnetic effects. Furthermore, we also reveal the striking spin textures at $k_{z}=\pi$ plane which demonstrates, in a large region of the surface Brillouin Zone, a direction-selective spin polarization, which has a strong implication to spintronic applications., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We study the pseudospin and spin dynamical effects in single-layer silicene due to a perpendicular electric field periodically driven and its interplay with the intrinsic and extrinsic (Rashba) spin-orbit interaction. We find that the spin nonconserving processes of the real spin of the quasiparticles in silicene, -- induced by the rather weak spin-orbit mechanisms --, manifest themselves as shifts of the resonances of its quasienergy spectrum in the low coupling regime to the driving field. We show that there is an interesting cooperative effect among the, in principle, competing Rashba and intrinsic spin-orbit contributions. This is explicitly illustrated by exact and approximated analytical solutions of the dynamical equations. In addition, we show that a finite Rashba spin-orbit interaction is indeed necessary in order to achieve a nonvanishing spin polarization. As additional feature, trivial and nontrivial topological phases might be distinguished from each other as fast or slow dynamical fluctuations of the spin polarization. We mention the possible experimental detection schemes of our theoretical results and their relevance in new practical implementation of periodically driven interactions in silicene physics and related two-dimensional systems., 17 pages, 4 figures

We compute the dynamical relaxation times for chiral transport phenomena in strongly coupled regime using the AdS/CFT correspondence. These relaxation times can be a useful proxy for the dynamical time scale for achieving equilibrium spin-polarization of quasi-particles in the presence of magnetic field and fluid vorticity. We identify the Kubo relations for these relaxation times and clarify some previous issues regarding time-dependence of the Chiral Vortical Effect. We study the consequences of imposing time-reversal invariance on parity-odd thermal noise fluctuations that are related to chiral transport coefficients by the fluctuation-dissipation relation. Sau, Lutchyn, Tewari and Das Sarma (SLTD) proposed a heterostructure consisting of a semiconducting thin film sandwiched between an s-wave superconductor and a magnetic insulator and showed possible Majorana zero mode. Here we study spin polarization of the vortex core states and spin selective Andreev reflection at the vortex center of the SLTD model. In the topological phase, the differential conductance at the vortex center contributed from the Andreev reflection, is spin selective and has a quantized value $${(dI/dV)}_{A}^{topo}=2{e}^{2}/h$$ ( d I / d V ) A t o p o = 2 e 2 / h at zero bias. In the topological trivial phase, $${(dI/dV)}_{A}^{trivial}$$ ( d I / d V ) A t r i v i a l at the lowest quasiparticle energy of the vortex core is spin selective due to the spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Unlike in the topological phase, $${(dI/dV)}_{A}^{trivial}$$ ( d I / d V ) A t r i v i a l is suppressed in the Giaever limit and vanishes exactly at zero bias due to the quantum destruction interference.

The spin-galvanic (inverse Edelstein) and inverse spin-Hall effects are calculated for a hybrid system that combines thin superconductor and Rashba-metal layers. These effects are produced by a nonequilibrium spin polarization which is injected into the normal metal layer. This polarization gives rise to an electric potential that relaxes within some characteristic length, which is determined by Andreev reflection. Within this length the dissipative electric current of quasiparticles in the normal layer converts into the supercurrent. This process involves only subgap states and at low temperature the inelastic electron-phonon interactions are not important. The spectrum of collective excitations of degenerate partially polarized spin-1/2 fermions is considered. The spin-up fermions and the spin-down fermions are considered as different fluids. Corresponding two-fluid hydrodynamics consistent with a non-linear Pauli equation is suggested. An equation of state for the spin current caused by the distribution of particles on different energy levels is suggested for the degenerate regime, where the spin current is caused by the Pauli blocking. Spectrum of three waves is found as a solution of the hydrodynamic equations: two sound waves and one spin wave. The magnetization of a ferromagnet (F) driven out of equilibrium injects pure spin current into an adjacent conductor (N). Such F$|$N bilayers have become basic building blocks in a wide variety of spin based devices. We evaluate the shot noise of the spin current traversing the F$|$N interface when F is subjected to a coherent microwave drive. We find that the noise spectrum is frequency independent up to the drive frequency, and increases linearly with frequency thereafter. The low frequency noise indicates super-Poissonian spin transfer, which results from quasi-particles with effective spin $\hbar^* = \hbar (1 + \delta)$. We study laser-induced torques in bcc Fe, hcp Co, and $L{1}_{0}$ FePt based on first-principles electronic structure calculations and the Keldysh nonequilibrium formalism. We find that the torques have two contributions, one from the inverse Faraday effect (IFE) and one from the optical spin-transfer torque (OSTT). Depending on the ferromagnet at hand and on the quasiparticle broadening the two contributions may be of similar magnitude, or one contribution may dominate over the other. Additionally, we determine the nonequilibrium spin polarization in order to investigate its relation to the torque. We find the torques and the perpendicular component of the nonequilibrium spin polarization to be odd in the helicity of the laser light, while the spin polarization that is induced parallel to the magnetization is helicity independent. The parallel component of the nonequilibrium spin polarization is orders of magnitude larger than the perpendicular component. In the case of hcp Co we find good agreement between the calculated laser-induced torque and a recent experiment.

We present a theory of spin dynamics caused by spin-orbit coupling for two-dimensional gases of cold atoms and other quasiparticles with pseudospin 1/2 moving in orbital gauge fields. Our approach is based on the gauge transformation in the form of a SU(2) rotation gauging out the spin-orbit coupling. As a result, the analysis of the spin dynamics is reduced to calculation of the density-related susceptibility of the system without spin-orbit coupling at the wavevector determined by the spin-rotation length. This approach allows one to treat the spin dynamics in terms of the linear response theory for bosonic and fermionic ensembles. We study different regimes of irreversible spin relaxation and coherent spin dynamics in these systems. A Weyl semimetal is a new state of matter that host Weyl fermions as quasiparticle excitations. The Weyl fermions at zero energy correspond to points of bulk band degeneracy, Weyl nodes, which are separated in momentum space and are connected only through the crystal's boundary by an exotic Fermi arc surface state. We experimentally measure the spin polarization of the Fermi arcs in the first experimentally discovered Weyl semimetal TaAs. Our spin data, for the first time, reveal that the Fermi arcs' spin polarization magnitude is as large as 80% and possesses a spin texture that is completely in-plane. Moreover, we demonstrate that the chirality of the Weyl nodes in TaAs cannot be inferred by the spin texture of the Fermi arcs. The observed non-degenerate property of the Fermi arcs is important for the establishment of its exact topological nature, which reveal that spins on the arc form a novel type of 2D matter. We study the collective charge excitations (plasmons) in spin polarized graphene, and derive explicit expressions for their dispersion in the undamped regime. From this, we are able to calculate the critical wave vector beyond which the plasmon enters the electron-hole continuum, its quality factor decreasing sharply. We find that the value of the critical wave vector is strongly spin polarization-dependent, in a way that has no analog in ordinary two-dimensional electron gases. The origin of this effect is in the coupling between the plasmon and the inter-band electron-hole pairs of the minority spin carriers. We show that the effect is robust with respect to the inclusion of disorder and we suggest that it can be exploited to experimentally determine the spin polarization of graphene., 5 pages, 4 figures; final PRB version

Quantum wires with spin-orbit coupling provide a unique opportunity to simultaneously control the coupling strength and the screened Coulomb interactions where new exotic phases of matter can be explored. Here we report on the observation of an exotic spin-orbit density wave in Pb-atomic wires on Si(557) surfaces by mapping out the evolution of the modulated spin-texture at various conditions with spin-and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The results are independently quantified by surface transport measurements. The spin polarization, coherence length, spin dephasing rate and the associated quasiparticle gap decrease simultaneously as the screened Coulomb interaction decreases with increasing excess coverage, providing a new mechanism for generating and manipulating a spin-orbit entanglement effect via electronic interaction. Despite clear evidence of spontaneous spin-rotation symmetry breaking and modulation of spin-momentum structure as a function of excess coverage, the average spin polarization over the Brillouin zone vanishes, indicating that time-reversal symmetry is intact as theoretically predicted. The broken inversion symmetry at the surface of a metallic film (or, more generally, at the interface between a metallic film and a different metallic or insulating material) greatly amplifies the influence of the spin-orbit interaction on the surface properties. The best known manifestation of this effect is the momentum-dependent splitting of the surface state energies (Rashba effect). Here we show that the same interaction also generates a spin-polarization of the bulk states when an electric current is driven through the bulk of the film. For a semi-infinite jellium model, which is representative of metals with a closed Fermi surface, we prove as a theorem that, regardless of the shape of the confinement potential, the induced surface spin density at each surface is given by ${\bf S} =-\gamma \hbar {\bf \hat z}\times {\bf j}$, where ${\bf j}$ is the particle current density in the bulk, ${\bf \hat z}$ the unit vector normal to the surface, and $\gamma=\frac{\hbar}{4mc^2}$ contains only fundamental constants. For a general metallic solid $\gamma$ becomes a material-specific parameter that controls the strength of the interfacial spin-orbit coupling. Our theorem, combined with an {\it ab initio} calculation of the spin polarization of the current-carrying film, enables a determination of $\gamma$, which should be useful in modeling the spin-dependent scattering of quasiparticles at the interface., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

In this paper the Quasiparticle-Phonon Nuclear Model (QPNM), based on QRPA (Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation) phonons, has been utilized to investigate spin polarization effects on the groundstate magnetic properties such as intrinsic magnetic moment (g K ) and effective spin gyromagnetic factor (g . ) of odd-mass deformed 165–179Hf isotopes with K > 1/2. Investigations of the spin polarization effects of the even core on the magnetic moments show that the spin gyromagnetic factors (g s ) of the nucleons in the nucleus differ noticeably from the corresponding values for free nucleons and that the spin-spin interactions play an important role in the re-normalization of g s factors of the odd-mass 165–179Hf isotopes. In addition, some theoretical predictions are presented for the magnetic moments of 165Hf, 167Hf, and 169Hf, whose ground state magnetic moments haven’t been experimentally determined yet.

Using the quasiparticle phonon nuclear model (QPNM) and taking into account the spin–spin interaction, the effects of the spin polarization on spin gyromagnetic factors (gs) as well as the intrinsic magnetic moments (gK) of the deformed odd neutron155-165Dy isotopes were studied. The calculated values of gsand gKare in fair agreement with the experiment as well as with other microscopic calculations. Our calculations indicated that because of the core polarization, the gsfactors of the nucleons in the nucleus reduce noticeably from its free nucleon value and the spin–spin interactions play an important role in the explanation of the quenching of the gsfactors. A very good reproduction of the phenomenological quenching of gsfactor from its free values [Formula: see text] is obtained for155-165Dy .

We study the response of a single-component pair-correlated baryonic Fermi-liquid to density, spin, and their current perturbations. A complete set of response functions is derived in the low-temperature regime both within an effective theory based on a small momentum transfer expansion and within a numerical scheme valid for arbitrary momentum transfers. A comparison of these two approaches validates the perturbative approximation within the domain of its convergence. We derive the spectral functions of collective excitations associated with the density, density-current, spin, and spin-current perturbations. The dispersion relations of density and spin fluctuations are derived and it is shown that the density fluctuations lead to exciton-like undamped bound states, whereas the spin excitations correspond to diffusive modes above the pair-breaking threshold. The contribution of the collective pair-breaking modes to the specific heat of neutron matter at subnuclear densities is computed and is shown to be comparable to that of the degenerate electron gas at not too low temperatures., 18 pages, 5 figures, v2: matches published version

We study charged excitations of the non-abelian Moore-Read liquid at filling factor nu=5/2, allowing for spin depolarization. Using a combination of numerical studies, and taking account of non-zero well widths, we find that at sufficiently low Zeeman energy it is energetically favourable for charge e/4 quasiholes to bind into "skyrmions" of charge e/2. We show that skyrmion formation is further promoted by disorder, and argue that this can lead to a depolarized nu=5/2 ground state in realistic experimental situations. Bilayer electron-hole systems with unequal electron and hole densities are expected to have exciton condensate ground states with spontaneous spin-polarization in both conduction and valence bands. In the absence of spin-orbit and electron-hole exchange interactions there is no coupling between the spin-orientations in the two quantum wells. Inelastic light scattering spectroscopy around the \nu=1/3 filling discloses a novel type of cyclotron spin-flip excitation in a quantum Hall system in addition to the excitations previously studied. The excitation energy of the observed mode follows qualitatively the degree of electron spin polarization, reaching a maximum value at \nu=1/3 and thus characterizing it as a \nu=1/3 ferromagnet eigenmode. Its absolute energy substantially exceeds the theoretical prediction obtained within the renowned single-mode approximation. We investigate the influence of spin-orbit coupling in a non-centrosymmetric superconductor on its ground state properties near a surface. We determine the spectrum of Andreev bound states due to surface-induced mixing of bands with opposite spin helicities for a Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling. We find a qualitative change of the Andreev spectrum when we account for the suppression of the order parameter near the surface, leading to clear signatures in the surface density of states. We also compute the spin current at the surface, which has spin polarization normal to that of the bulk current. The magnitude of the current at the surface is enhanced in the normal state compared to the bulk, and even further enlarged in the superconducting phase. We analyze the broad range of spin-dependent nonequilibrium transport properties of hybrid systems composed of a normal region tunnel coupled to two superconductors with exchange fields induced by the proximity to thin ferromagnetic layers and highlight its functionalities. By calculating the quasiparticle distribution functions in the normal region we find that they are spin-dependent and strongly sensitive to the relative angle between exchange fields in the two superconductors. The impact of inelastic collisions on their properties is addressed. As a result, the electric current flowing through the system is found to be strongly dependent on the relative angle between exchange fields, giving rise to a huge value of magnetoresistance. Moreover, the current presents a complete spin-polarization in a wide range of bias voltages, even in the quasiequilibrium case. In the nonequilibrium limit we parametrize the distributions with an ``effective`` temperature, which turns out to be strongly spin-dependent, though quite sensitive to inelastic collisions. We study the absorption spectrum of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a magnetic field. We find that that at low temperatures, when the 2DEG is spin polarized, the absorption spectra, which correspond to the creation of spin up or spin down electron, differ in magnitude, linewidth and filling factor dependence. We show that these differences can be explained as resulting from creation of a Mahan exciton in one case, and of a power law Fermi edge singularity in the other., 4 pages, 4 figures, published in Phys. For decades, the conventional view is that an s-wave BCS superfluid can not support uniform spin polarization due to a gap $\Delta$ in the quasiparticle excitation spectrum. We show that this is an artifact of the dismissal of quasiparticle interactions $V_{qp}^{}$ in the conventional approach at the outset. Such interactions can cause triplet fluctuations in the ground state and hence non-zero spin polarization at "magnetic field" $h, Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Magnetic excitations are studied in gapped quantum spin systems, for which spontaneous two-magnon decays are allowed by symmetry. Interaction between one- and two-particle states acquires nonanalytic frequency and momentum dependence near the boundary of two-magnon continuum. This leads to a termination point of single-particle branch for one-dimensional systems and to strong suppression of quasiparticle weight in two dimensions. The cyclotron spin-flip modes of spin unpolarized integer quantum Hall states ($\nu =2,4$) have been studied with inelastic light scattering. The energy of these modes is significantly smaller compared to the bare cyclotron gap. We describe a new effect in semiconductor spintronics that leads to dissipationless spin-currents in paramagnetic spin-orbit coupled systems. We argue that in a high mobility two-dimensional electron system with substantial Rashba spin-orbit coupling, a spin-current that flows perpendicular to the charge current is intrinsic. Ballistic spin transport through waveguides, with symmetric or asymmetric double stubs attached to them periodically, is studied systematically in the presence of a weak spin-orbit coupling that makes the electrons precess. By an appropriate choice of the waveguide length and of the stub parameters injected spin-polarized electrons can be blocked completely and the transmission shows a periodic and nearly square-type behavior, with values 1 and 0, with wide gaps when only one mode is allowed to propagate in the waveguide. A similar behavior is possible for a certain range of the stub parameters even when two-modes can propagate in the waveguide and the conductance is doubled. Such a structure is a good candidate for establishing a realistic spin transistor. A further modulation of the spin current can be achieved by inserting defects in a finite-number stub superlattice. The low-energy electronic excitations in cobalt are studied by a theoretical method that includes many-body effects and a realistic description of the band structure. Angle-resolved photoemission spectra measured on a thick film of hexagonal close-packed Co on Cu(111) agree well with calculated spectral functions. Because of many-body effects no sharp quasiparticle peaks exist for binding energies larger than $2\mathrm{eV}$ and in this energy region the spectrum is essentially incoherent. The many-body corrections are much stronger in the majority-spin channel and drastically affect the spin polarization of the spectra.

Scanning tunneling spectroscopic studies of cuprate superconductors revealed that the most eminent phenomena of hole-doped (p-type) cuprates, including the predominant d x 2 − y 2 pairing symmetry, spin fluctuations and pseudogap, are absent in the infinite-layer electron-doped (n-type) cuprates Sr 1− x La x CuO 2 . The optimally doped Sr 0.9 La 0.1 CuO 2 exhibits s-wave pairing symmetry, with a superconducting transition temperature T c =43.0 K, a large energy gap Δ =13.0±1.0 meV, and no pseudogap in the normal state. The response of Sr 0.9 La 0.1 CuO 2 to quantum impurities is also conventional, being less sensitive to non-magnetic impurities than to magnetic impurities, in sharp contrast to the strong effects induced by static non-magnetic impurities in the p-type cuprates. The dynamic injection of spin-polarized quasiparticles into the p-type cuprates is found to incur significant suppression of superconductivity, probably due to the strong influence on the spin fluctuations.

We present a theory of the low-energy excitations of a ferromagnetic metal nanoparticle. In addition to the particle-hole excitations, which occur in a paramagnetic metal nanoparticle, we predict a branch of excitations involving the magnetization-orientation collective coordinate. Tunneling matrix elements are in general sizable for several different collective states associated with the same band configuration. A novel approach is developed for computer simulation studies of dynamical properties of spin liquids. It is based on the Liouville operator formalism of Hamiltonian dynamics in conjunction with Suzuki-Trotter-like decompositions of exponential propagators. As a result, a whole set of symplectic time-reversible algorithms has been introduced for numerical integration of the equations of motion at the presence of both translational and spin degrees of freedom. It is shown that these algorithms can be used in actual simulations with much larger time steps than those inherent in standard predictor-corrector schemes. This has allowed one to perform direct quantitative measurements for spin-spin, spin-density and density-density dynamical structure factors of a Heisenberg ferrofluid model for the first time. It was established that like pure liquids the density spectrum can be expressed in terms of heat and sound modes, whereas like spin lattices in the ferromagnetic phase there exists one primary spin in the shape of spin- spin dynamic structure factors describing the longitudinal and transverse spin fluctuations. As it was predicted in our previous paper [Mryglod I., Folk R. et al., Physica A277 (2000) 389] we found also that a secondary wave peak appears additionally in the longitudinal spin-spin dynamic structure factor. The frequency position of this peak coincides entirely with that for a sound mode reflecting the effect of the liquid subsystem on spin dynamics. The possibility of longitudinal spin wave propagation in magnetic liquids at sound frequency can be considered as a new effect which has yet to be tested experimentally. Пpопонується новий пiдхiд до дослiдження динамiчних властивостей спiнових piдин у комп’ютеpному експеpиментi. Пiдхiд базується на фоpмалiзмi опеpатоpiв Лiувiлля для опису Гамiльтонової динамiки у поєднаннi з методом фактоpизацiї експонентних пpопагатоpiв типу Сузукi-Тpоттеpа. У pезультатi розвинуто сукупність нових алгоритмів для числового iнтегpування piвнянь pуху за наявностi як тpасляцiйних, так i спiнових ступеней вiльностi, які зберігають фазовий об’єм і є часо-зворотніми. Показано, що цi алгоpитми можуть викоpистовуватися у комп’ютеpних розрахунках із набагато бiльшими часовими кpоками порівняно з тими, якi пpитаманнi стандаpтним пpогнозокоpектованим схемам. Це нам дало змогу впеpше виконати прямі розрахунки динамiчних стpуктуpних фактоpiв типу спiн-спiн, спiн- густина i густина-густина для Гайзенбеpгiвської моделi феpофлюїду. Встановлено, що подiбно до чистих piдин густинний спектp може бути описаний в термінах теплової та звукових мод. Водночас, подiбно до спінових гpаткових систем,у феромагнітній фазі у поздовжньому та попеpечному динамічних структурних факторах спін-спін як основний спостерігається спін-хвильовий пік. Окрім того, у поздовжньому динамічному структурному факторі спін-спін виявлено додатковий пік, поява якого пеpедбачалася нами раніше [Mryglod I., Folk R. et al., Physica A277 (2000) 389]. Частотна позиція цього піку повністю збігається з частотою звукових збуджень, що відображає вплив рідинної підсистеми на спінову динаміку. Можливiсть пошиpення поздовжнiх спiнових хвиль на звуковій частоті слід розглядати як новий ефект, що потребує експериментальної перевірки.

We present a method which allows to include narrow-band correlation effects into the description of both valence and core states and we apply it to the prototypical case of nickel. The results of an ab-initio band calculation are used as input mean-field eigenstates for the calculation of self-energy corrections and spectral functions according to a three-body scattering solution of a multi-orbital Hubbard hamiltonian. The calculated quasi-particle spectra show a remarkable agreement with photoemission data in terms of band width, exchange splitting, satellite energy position of valence states, spin polarization of both the main line and the satellite of the 3p core level., 14 pages, 10 PostScript figures, RevTeX, submitted to PRB

Magnetotransport measurements on a low-density two-dimensional electron system have revealed a re-entrant dependence of the activation energy on magnetic field for the fractional quantum Hall state at 2/3 filling of the lowest Landau level. The data are consistent with a change in the spin structure of the ground state at 2/3 filling, but do not provide a simple picture of the quasiparticle excitation process. As yet we find no similar effect for the \ensuremath{\nu}=2/5 state.

When a carbon nanotube is truncated with a certain type of edges, boundary states localized near the edges appear at the fermi level. Starting from lattice models, low energy effective theories are constructed which describe electron correlation effects on the boundary states. We then focus on a thin metallic carbon nanotube which supports one or two boundary states, and discuss physical consequences of the interaction between the boundary states and bulk collective excitations. By the renormalization group analyses together with the open boundary bosonization, we show that the repulsive bulk interactions suppress the charge fluctuations at boundaries, and assist the spin polarization., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure
