To address the problems of low accuracy in fault diagnosis of oil-immersed transformers, poor state perception ability and real-time collaboration during diagnosis feedback, a fault diagnosis method for transformers based on the integration of digital twins is proposed. Firstly, fault sample balance is achieved through Iterative Nearest Neighbor Oversampling (INNOS), Secondly, nine-dimensional ratio features are extracted, and the correlation between dissolved gases in oil and fault types is established. Then, sparse principal component analysis (SPCA) is used for feature fusion and dimensionality reduction. Finally, the Aquila Optimizer (AO) is introduced to optimize the parameters of the Kernel Extreme Learning Machine (KELM), establishing the optimal AO-KELM diagnosis model. The final fault diagnosis accuracy reaches 98.1013%. Combining transformer digital twin models, real-time interaction mapping between physical entities and virtual space is achieved, enabling online diagnosis of transformer faults. While large enterprises are actively preparing for digital transformation by leveraging technologies such as digital twins, smaller companies face challenges due to economic constraints and market uncertainties, leading to a relative lack of awareness and readiness. To address this situation, this study proposes a digital twin development framework tailored for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This framework utilizes attachable IoT devices for real-time collection of manufacturing data and leverages public server systems for data management. Moreover, it enables the refinement and optimization of digital twins by training machine learning models on collected data. Additionally, the framework includes the integration of simulation models and machine learning models for comprehensive digital twin modelling. The advent of Internet of Things and artificial intelligence in the era of Industry 4.0 has transformed decision-making within production systems. In particular, many decisions that previously required significant human activity are now made automatically with minimal human intervention via so-called digital twins (DTs). In the context of maintenance and reliability modeling, this naturally calls for new paradigms that can be seamlessly integrated within DTs for decision-making. The input data for time to failure needed in reliability computations are directly collected from the work center in a digital setting and often do not satisfy a known distribution. A neural network (NN) is proposed here to bypass this difficulty within the DT. Further, an algorithm inspired from machine learning is employed to solve the underlying semi-Markov decision process, whose transition model is captured via the NN. Digital Twin is becoming an increasingly powerful resource in the field of building production, replacing traditional processes in the Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operations sector. This study is concerned with the development of a DT, enabled by Building Information Modeling, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the Internet of Things to implement space management strategies. It proposes an application case for the Lazio Region headquarters, which has partly adopted smart working typology post-COVID-19. The aim is to create an accurate digital replica of the building based on BIM, integrated with real-time data. This will help to improve the use of space, the management of resources, and the quality of services provided to the community. It also improves energy efficiency, reducing consumption by 530.40 MWh per year and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 641.32 tons of CO2 per year. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) could facilitate the green energy transition as they can produce high-temperature heat and electricity while emitting only water when supplied with hydrogen. Additionally, when operated with natural gas, these systems demonstrate higher thermoelectric efficiency compared to traditional microturbines or alternative engines. Within this context, although digitalisation has facilitated the acquisition of extensive data for precise modelling and optimal management of fuel cells, there remains a significant gap in developing digital twins that effectively achieve these objectives in real-world applications. Existing research predominantly focuses on the use of machine learning algorithms to predict the degradation of fuel cell components and to optimally design and theoretically operate these systems. In light of this, the presented study focuses on developing digital twin-oriented models that predict the efficiency of a commercial gas-fed solid oxide fuel cell under various operational conditions. This study uses data gathered from an experimental setup, which was employed to train various machine learning models, including artificial neural networks, random forests, and gradient boosting regressors. Preliminary findings demonstrate that the random forest model excels, achieving an R2 score exceeding 0.98 and a mean squared error of 0.14 in estimating electric efficiency. This paper explores and discusses the revolutionary applications of digital twin technology in space environments and its profound impact on future space exploration activities. Originating from a proposal by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 2002, digital twin technology aims to enhance the safety and reliability of space missions by creating precise virtual models. As the technology has evolved, its applications have successfully expanded beyond aerospace to include Industry 4.0, healthcare, and urban management, demonstrating remarkable cross-industry adaptability and broad impact. In space applications, digital twin technology can not only improve spacecraft design and maintenance processes but also enhance the efficiency of mission planning and execution. It plays a crucial role in astronaut training and emergency response as well. Particularly in extreme space conditions, this technology provides real-time monitoring and fault prediction, significantly enhancing mission safety and success rates. This review focuses on the definitions, modalities, applications, and performance of various aspects of digital twins (DTs) in the context of transmission and industrial machinery. In this regard, the context around Industry 4.0 and even aspirations for Industry 5.0 are discussed. The many definitions and interpretations of DTs in this domain are first summarized. Subsequently, their adoption and performance levels for rotating and industrial machineries for manufacturing and lifetime performance are observed, along with the type of validations that are available. In recent years, the detection performance of SAR-GMTI (synthetic aperture radar-ground moving target indication) algorithm based on deep learning has always been limited by insufficient measured data due to the heavy operation complexity and high cost of real SAR systems. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an overall DT-based implementation framework for SAR ground moving target intelligent detection tasks. In particular, by virtue of a SAR imaging algorithm, a high-fidelity twin replica of SAR moving targets is established in digital space through parameter traversal based on the prior target characteristics of the obtained measured datasets. Then, the constructed SAR twin datasets is fed into the neural network model to train an intelligent detector by fully learning features of the moving targets and preset the SAR scene in the twin space, which can realize the robust detection of ground moving targets in related practical scenarios with no need for multiple and complex field experiments. Moreover, the effectiveness of the proposed framework is verified on the MiniSAR measured system, and a comparison with traditional CFAR detection method is given simultaneously. Gear fault detection and remaining useful life estimation are important tasks for monitoring the health of rotating machinery. In this study, a new benchmark for endurance gear vibration signals is presented and made publicly available. The new dataset was used in the HUMS 2023 conference data challenge to test anomaly detection algorithms. A survey of the suggested techniques is provided, demonstrating that traditional signal processing techniques interestingly outperform deep learning algorithms in this case. Of the 11 participating groups, only those that used traditional approaches achieved good results on most of the channels. Additionally, we introduce a signal processing anomaly detection algorithm and meticulously compare it to a standard deep learning anomaly detection algorithm using data from the HUMS 2023 challenge and simulated signals. The signal processing algorithm surpasses the deep learning algorithm on all tested channels and also on simulated data where there is an abundance of training data. In a construction project schedule, delays in delivery are one of the most important problems. Delays can be caused by several project components; however, the issue is amplified when delays occur simultaneously. Classifying delays is relevant in order to allocate responsibility to the parties. In Italy, the delay in the delivery of medium and large-sized works in residential urban centers is about 15% compared to the project forecast. Moreover, the AECO sector's ability to adapt to emerging challenges, such as environmental sustainability and digitization, is limited by the lack of innovation in management methods. The aim of this research is to create a methodology for managing the built and to-be-built environment in a digital way. This will optimize the building process by reducing delays and waste of resources. The methodology will use tools such as digital twin (DT), Building Information Modeling (BIM), Internet of Things (IoT), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms. The integration of lean construction practices can make the use of these technologies even more efficient, supporting better workflow management by using the BIM environment. The investigation describes an inventive use of digital twin technology and LSTM-based machine learning models for real-time patient lung disease monitoring and nutrition planning. The suggested application uses various patient healthcare data, treatment processes, dietary habits, and real-time sensor information to construct digital twins, which are virtual reproductions of specific patients. The LSTM model is trained on this large dataset to predict patient health improvements and dietary needs. For each patient's digital twin, the program provides personalized treatment plans and nutritional advice, enabling proactive interventions and optimizing patient care. Using performance measures, the trained LSTM model achieves high scores for accuracy (92%), precision (89%), recall (93%), and F1 score (91%), proving its usefulness in generating credible health predictions. With the increasing demand for high data rates, low delay, and extended battery life, managing massive machine-type communication (mMTC) in the beyond 5G (B5G) context is challenging. MMTC devices, which play a role in developing the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart cities, need to transmit short amounts of data periodically within a specific time frame. Although blockchain technology is utilized for secure data storage and transfer while digital twin technology provides real-time monitoring and management of the devices, issues such as constrained time delays and network congestion persist. Without a proper data transmission strategy, most devices would fail to transmit in time, thus defying their relevance and purpose. This work investigates the problem of massive random access channel (RACH) attempts while emphasizing the energy efficiency and access latency for mMTC devices with critical missions in B5G networks. Using machine learning techniques, we propose an attention-based reinforcement learning model that orchestrates the device grouping strategy to optimize device placement. Thus, the model guarantees a higher probability of success for the devices during data transmission access, eventually leading to more efficient energy consumption. The global demand for energy is significantly impacted by the consumption patterns within the building sector. As such, the importance of energy simulation and prediction is growing exponentially. This research leverages Building Information Modelling (BIM) methodologies, creating a synergy between traditional software methods and algorithm-driven approaches for comprehensive energy analysis. The study also proposes a method for monitoring select energy management factors, a step that could potentially pave the way for the integration of digital twins in energy management systems. The research is grounded in a case study of a newly constructed educational building in New South Wales, Australia. The digital physical model of the building was created using Autodesk Revit, a conventional software for BIM methodology. EnergyPlus, facilitated by OpenStudio, was employed for the traditional software-based energy analysis. The energy analysis output was then used to develop preliminary algorithm models using regression strategies in Python. In this regression analysis, the temperature and relative humidity of each energy unit were used as independent variables, with their energy consumption being the dependent variable. The sigmoid algorithm model, known for its accuracy and interpretability, was employed for advanced energy simulation. This was combined with sensor data for real-time energy prediction. A basic digital twin (DT) example was created to simulate the dynamic control of air conditioning and lighting, showcasing the adaptability and effectiveness of the system. The study also explores the potential of machine learning, specifically reinforcement learning, in optimizing energy management in response to environmental changes and usage conditions. A transformer inter-turn fault identification method is proposed based on the digital twin concept to tackle the challenges of high operational complexity and low accuracy associated with traditional transformer fault identification methods. Initially, the Bald Eagle Search algorithm is employed to optimize the critical parameters of the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), determining the optimal input layer weight and hidden layer threshold of the Extreme Learning Machine. Subsequently, leveraging the digital twin concept, a digital replica of the physical transformer is established, enabling multi-physical field coupling simulation encompassing electrical, thermal, and acoustic domains to elucidate the variation patterns of various physical parameters across different operational scenarios and fault scenarios. Furthermore, key physical characteristic parameters such as sound pressure and winding hot spot temperature are carefully selected to drive a fault identification model tailored to inter-turn faults within the framework of the digital twin concept. Through a detailed investigation using 630 kV A/10 kV transformers as a case study, the results exhibit an impressive fault identification accuracy of 95.24% for the proposed method. Comparative analysis reveals notable enhancements in fault identification accuracy of 12.22%, 7.85%, and 3.73% for ELM, Support Vector Machine and Tuna Swarm Optimization --ELM models, respectively. Emerging from the convergence of digital twin technology and the metaverse, consumer health (MCH) is witnessing a transformative shift. The amalgamation of bioinformatics with healthcare Big Data has ushered in a new era of disease prediction models that harness comprehensive medical data, enabling the anticipation of illnesses even before the onset of symptoms. In this model, deep neural networks stand out because they improve accuracy remarkably by increasing network depth and making weight changes using gradient descent. Nonetheless, traditional methods face their own set of challenges, including the issues of gradient instability and slow training. In this case, the Broad Learning System (BLS) stands out as a good alternative. It gets around the problems with gradient descent and lets you quickly rebuild a model through incremental learning. One problem with BLS is that it has trouble extracting complex features from complex medical data. This makes it less useful in a wide range of healthcare situations. In response to these challenges, we introduce DAE-BLS, a novel hybrid model that marries Denoising AutoEncoder (DAE) noise reduction with the efficiency of BLS. This hybrid approach excels in robust feature extraction, particularly within the intricate and multifaceted world of medical data. Validation using diverse datasets yields impressive results, with accuracies reaching as high as 98.50%. With the ever increasing number of active satellites in space, the rising demand for larger formations of small satellites and the commercialization of the space industry (so-called New Space), the realization of manufacturing processes in orbit comes closer to reality. Reducing launch costs and risks, allowing for faster on-demand deployment of individually configured satellites as well as the prospect for possible on-orbit servicing for satellites makes the idea of realizing an in-orbit factory promising. In this paper, we present a novel approach to an in-orbit factory of small satellites covering a digital process twin, AI-based fault detection, and teleoperated robot-control, which are being researched as part of the "AI-enabled Cyber–Physical In-Orbit Factory" project. In addition to the integration of modern automation and Industry 4.0 production approaches, the question of how artificial intelligence (AI) and learning approaches can be used to make the production process more robust, fault-tolerant and autonomous is addressed. This lays the foundation for a later realization of satellite production in space in the form of an in-orbit factory. Central aspect is the development of a robotic AIT (Assembly, Integration and Testing) system where a small satellite could be assembled by a manipulator robot from modular subsystems. Approaches developed to improving this production process with AI include employing neural networks for optical and electrical fault detection of components. Force sensitive measuring and motion training helps to deal with uncertainties and tolerances during assembly. An AI-guided teleoperated control of the robot arm allows for human intervention while a Digital Process Twin represents process data and provides supervision during the whole production process. This article explores the integration of Digital Twins in Systems and Predictive Medicine, focusing on eye diagnosis. By utilizing the Digital Twin models, the proposed framework can support early diagnosis and predict evolution after treatment by providing customized simulation scenarios. Furthermore, a structured architectural framework comprising five levels has been proposed, integrating Digital Twin, Systems Medicine, and Predictive Medicine for managing eye diseases. Based on demographic parameters, statistics were performed to identify potential correlations that may contribute to predispositions to glaucoma. The current outdoor thermal comfort index assessment is either based on thermal sensation votes collected through field surveys/questionnaires or using equations fundamentally backed by thermodynamics, such as the widely used UTCI and PET indices. The predictive ability of all methods suffers from discrepancies as multi-sensory attributes, cultural, emotional, and psychological cognition factors are ignored. These factors are proven to influence the thermal sensation and duration people spend outdoors, and are equally prominent factors as air temperature, solar radiation, and relative humidity. The studies that adopted machine learning models, such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), concentrated on improving the predictive capability of PET, thereby making the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) domain underexplored. Furthermore, universally adopted outdoor thermal comfort indices under-predict a neutral thermal range, for a reason that is linked to the fact that all indices were validated on European/American subjects living in temperate, cold regions. The review highlighted gaps and challenges in outdoor thermal comfort prediction accuracy by comparing traditional methods and Industry 4.0. Recently, significant efforts have been made to create Health Digital Twins (HDTs), Digital Twins for clinical applications. Heart modeling is one of the fastest-growing fields, which favors the effective application of HDTs. The clinical application of HDTs will be increasingly widespread in the future of healthcare services and has huge potential to form part of mainstream medicine. However, it requires the development of both models and algorithms for the analysis of medical data, and advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based algorithms have already revolutionized image segmentation processes. Precise segmentation of lesions may contribute to an efficient diagnostics process and a more effective selection of targeted therapy. In this systematic review, a brief overview of recent achievements in HDT technologies in the field of cardiology, including interventional cardiology, was conducted. HDTs were studied taking into account the application of Extended Reality (XR) and AI, as well as data security, technical risks, and ethics-related issues. Special emphasis was put on automatic segmentation issues. In this study, 253 literature sources were taken into account. It appears that improvements in data processing will focus on automatic segmentation of medical imaging in addition to three-dimensional (3D) pictures to reconstruct the anatomy of the heart and torso that can be displayed in XR-based devices. This will contribute to the development of effective heart diagnostics. The combination of AI, XR, and an HDT-based solution will help to avoid technical errors and serve as a universal methodology in the development of personalized cardiology. The majority of Europe's building stock consists of facilities built before 2001, presenting a substantial opportunity for energy efficiency improvements during their operation and maintenance phase. Digitalizing these buildings with digital twin technology can significantly enhance their energy efficiency. Reviewing the applications and trends of digital twins in this context is beneficial to understand the current state of the art and the specific challenges encountered when applying this technology to older buildings. This study focuses on the application of digital twins in building operations and maintenance (O & M), emphasizing energy efficiency throughout the building lifetime. A systematic process to select 21 pertinent use-case studies was performed, complemented by an analysis of six enterprise-level digital twin solutions. This was followed by an overview of general characteristics, thematic classification, detailed individual study analyses, and a comparison of digital twin solutions with commercial tools. Five main applications of digital twins were identified and examined: component monitoring, anomaly detection, operational optimization, predictive maintenance and simulation of alternative scenarios. Existing design codes for predicting the strength of stud shear connections in composite structures are limited when adapting to constant changes in materials and configurations. Machine learning (ML) models for predicting shear connection are often constrained by the number of input variables, resembling conventional design equations. Moreover, these models tend to overlook considerations beyond those directly comprising the connection. In addition, the data used in ML are often biased and limited in quantity. This study proposes a model using AutoML to automate and optimize the process for predicting the ultimate strength and deformation capacity of shear connections. The proposed model leverages a comprehensive dataset derived from experimental studies and finite element analyses, offering an advanced data-driven solution to overcome the limitations of traditional empirical equations. A digital twin model for the static design of pushout specimens was defined to replace existing empirical design codes. The digital twin model incorporates predictions of the geometry model, ultimate strength, and slip as input parameters and provides criteria for evaluating the limit state through a bilinear load–slip curve. For a lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery to operate safely and reliably, an accurate state of health (SOH) estimation is crucial. Data-driven models with manual feature extraction are commonly used for battery SOH estimation, requiring extensive expert knowledge to extract features. In this regard, a novel data pre-processing model is proposed in this paper to extract health-related features automatically from battery-discharging data for SOH estimation. In the proposed method, one-dimensional (1D) voltage data are converted to two-dimensional (2D) data, and a new data set is created using a 2D sliding window. Then, features are automatically extracted in the machine learning (ML) training process. Finally, the estimation of the SOH is achieved by forecasting the battery voltage in the subsequent cycle. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated on the NASA public data set for a Li-ion battery degradation analysis in four different scenarios. The simulation results show a considerable reduction in the RMSE of battery SOH estimation. The proposed method eliminates the need for the manual extraction and evaluation of features, which is an important step toward automating the SOH estimation process and developing battery digital twins. Software-Defined Radios are radio communications devices that have been growing and developing on a larger scale in recent years. Communications are intrinsically embedded in our day by day, thus presenting a higher motivation to use software-defined radios due to its attractive cost. However they present technical limitations. This paper addresses this problem, which is the non-linearity behaviour of gain and frequency in the LimeSDR-USB. That is, this equipment is used to produce a FM signal with an associated frequency and gain before being parameterised according to the internal parameters of each software-defined radio. Each software-defined radio presents a value of frequency and gain of its own, which correlates to the generated signals at the output level. To avoid this, machine learning networks were used, in which networks were trained to adapt to the non-linearity of these devices and correct it without the user noticing. This way, the user sets a desired frequency and gain in a signal, at the output of the software-defined radios, and a neural network calculates which values the software-defined radios should be parameterised, thus mitigating the non-linearity behaviour. This work aims to conduct an analysis to find opportunities for the implementation of software incorporating the concept of digital twins for foundry work. Examples of implementations and their impact on the work of enterprises are presented, as is a definition and history of the concept of a digital twin. The outcome of this work is the implementation of software that involves a digital copy of the author's device, created by the "Łukasiewicz" Research Network at the Krakow Institute of Technology. The research problem of this scientific work is to reduce the number of necessary physical tests on real objects in order to find a solution that saves time and energy when testing the thermal expansion of known and new metal alloys. This will be achieved by predicting the behavior of the sample in a digital environment and avoiding causing it to break in reality. Until now, after an interruption, the device often continued to operate and collect data even though no current was flowing through the material, which could be described as inefficient testing. The expected result will be based on the information and decisions obtained by predicting values with the help of a recurrent neural network. Ultimately, it is intended to predict the condition of the sample after a set period of time. Thanks to this, a decision will be made, based on which the twin will know whether it should automatically end its work, disconnect the power or call the operator for the necessary interaction with the device. The described software will help the operator of a real machine, for example, to operate a larger number of workstations at the same time, without devoting all their attention to a process that may last even for hours. Additionally, it will be possible to start work on selecting the chemical composition of the next material sample and plan its testing in advance. The machine learning handles model learning and value prediction with the help of artificial neural networks that were created in Python. The application uses historical test data, additionally retrieves current information, presents it to the user in a clear modern form and runs the provided scripts. Modern solutions for precise fault localisation in Low Voltage (LV) Distribution Networks (DNs) often rely on costly tools such as the micro-Phasor Measurement Unit (μ PMU), which is potentially impractical for the large number of nodes in LVDNs. This paper introduces a novel fault detection technique using a distribution network digital twin without the use of μ PMUs. The Digital Twin (DT) integrates data from Smart Meters (SMs) and network topology to create an accurate replica. In using SM voltage-magnitude readings, the pre-built twin compiles a database of fault scenarios and matches them with their unique voltage fingerprints. However, this SM-based voltage-only approach shows only a 70.7% accuracy in classifying fault type and location. Therefore, this research suggests using the cables' Currents Symmetrical Component (CSC). Since SMs do not provide direct current data, a Machine Learning (ML)-based regression method is proposed to estimate the cables' currents in the DT. Validation is performed on a 41-node LV distribution feeder in the Scottish network provided by the industry partner Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN). The results show that the current estimation regressor significantly improves fault localisation and identification accuracy to 95.77%. This validates the crucial role of a DT in distribution networks, thus enabling highly accurate fault detection when using SM voltage-only data, with further refinements being conducted through estimations of CSC. The proposed DT offers automated fault detection, thus enhancing customer connectivity and maintenance team dispatch efficiency without the need for additional expensive μ PMU on a densely-noded distribution network. Long-term reliable condition monitoring (CM) of blast furnace blowers is essential to avoid catastrophic failure. Due to variable working conditions, the predefined thresholds in current CM systems influence the accuracy of the monitoring process and can lead to misdiagnoses. In order to overcome this limitation, we propose a digital twin (DT)-based scheme to monitor vibrations found in blowers. Factors believed to impact the distribution of vibration amplitudes are analysed using data collected from a constant speed axial blower operating in an industrial commercial environment and, based on which, a machine learning-based adaptive amplitude simulation model is developed on our on-site private cloud computing platform. Outcomes reveal that different guide vane openings in the manufacturing process can cause changes in amplitudes. By integrating the newly-arriving sensor data, vibration amplitudes can be more accurately predicted in the virtual space. The gap between the simulated and actual value narrowed from±5 μmto within±3 μm, from which a dynamic threshold can be defined. The resulting DT model, coupled with the on-site private cloud computing platform, which alleviates the shortage of computational and storage capacity in steel plants, allows for a much more effective CM system. Demands for more accurate machine learning models have given rise to rethinking current modeling approaches that were deemed unsuitable, primarily due to their computational complexity and the lack of availability and accessibility to representative data. One of the challenges in the field of human activity recognition in smart homes based on IoT sensors is the variability in the recorded data. This variability arises from differences in home configurations, sensor network setups, and the number and habits of inhabitants, resulting in a lack of data that accurately represent the application environment. Although simulators have been proposed in the literature to generate data, they fail to bridge the gap between training and field data or produce diverse datasets. In this article, we propose a solution to address this issue by leveraging the concept of digital twins to reduce the disparity between training and real-world data and generate more varied datasets. We introduce the Virtual Smart Home, a simulator specifically designed for modeling daily life activities in smart homes, which is adapted from the Virtual Home simulator. To assess its realism, we compare a set of activity data recorded in a real-life smart apartment with its replication in the VirtualSmartHome simulator. Additionally, we demonstrate that an activity recognition algorithm trained on the data generated by the VirtualSmartHome simulator can be successfully validated using real-life field data. The concept of a digital twin (DT) has gained significant attention in academia and industry because of its perceived potential to address critical global challenges, such as climate change, healthcare, and economic crises. Originally introduced in manufacturing, many attempts have been made to present proper definitions of this concept. Unfortunately, there remains a great deal of confusion surrounding the underlying concept, with many scientists still uncertain about the distinction between a simulation, a mathematical model and a DT. The aim of this paper is to propose a formal definition of a digital twin. To achieve this goal, we utilize a data science framework that facilitates a functional representation of a DT and other components that can be combined together to form a larger entity we refer to as a digital twin system (DTS). In our framework, a DT is an open dynamical system with an updating mechanism, also referred to as complex adaptive system (CAS). Its primary function is to generate data via simulations, ideally, indistinguishable from its physical counterpart. On the other hand, a DTS provides techniques for analyzing data and decision-making based on the generated data. Interestingly, we find that a DTS shares similarities to the principles of general systems theory. This multi-faceted view of a DTS explains its versatility in adapting to a wide range of problems in various application domains such as engineering, manufacturing, urban planning, and personalized medicine. In this work, a soft sensor–based digital twin (DT) was developed to reduce the startup time in manufacturing plastic tubes and enable real-time product quality monitoring, i.e., the weight per unit length and the inner and outer diameters of the tube. An experimental campaign was conducted on a real tube extrusion line using three polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compounds and different process conditions, and machine learning regression algorithms were trained and tested to create the models of the extruder and the extrusion die the DT is based on. The characterization of the considered material, whose properties were given as input to the digital models, was carried out according to a procedure based only on the data collected by the production line. The DT was tested for the startup of the production of a single-layer tube and allowed to achieve the specified customer requirements (thickness and weight) in a few minutes. Scanning underwater areas using magnetometers in search of unexploded ordnance is a difficult challenge, where machine learning methods can find a significant application. However, this requires the creation of a dataset enabling the training of prediction models. Such a task is difficult and costly due to the limited availability of relevant data. To address this challenge in the article, we propose the use of numerical modeling to solve this task. The conducted experiments allow us to conclude that it is possible to obtain high compliance with the numerical model based on the finite element method with the results of physical tests. Additionally, the paper discusses the methodology of simplifying the computational model, allowing for an almost three times reduction in the calculation time without affecting model quality. The article also presents and discusses the methodology for generating a dataset for the discrimination of UXO/non-UXO objects. This paper presents a bibliometric analysis of digital twin in the supply chain to help researchers, industry practitioners, and academics to understand the trend, development, and focus of the areas of digital twin in the supply chain. This paper found several key clusters of research, including the designing of a digital twin model, integration of a digital twin model, application of digital twin in quality control, and digital twin in digitalization. In the embryonic stage of research, digital twin was tested in the production line with limited optimization. In the development stage, the importance of digital twin in Industry 4.0 was observed, as big data, machine learning, Industrial Internet of Things, blockchain, edge computing, and cloud-based systems complemented digital twin models. Digital twin was applied to improve sustainability in manufacturing and production logistics. In the current prosperity stage with high annual publications, the recent trends of this topic focus on the integration of deep learning, data models, and artificial intelligence for digitalization. The rapid development of digital technologies and solutions is disrupting the energy sector. In this regard, digitalization is a facilitator and enabler for integrating renewable energies, management and operation. Structural health monitoring (SHM) of bridges is constantly upgraded by researchers and bridge engineers as it directly deals with bridge performance and its safety over a certain time period. This article addresses some issues in the traditional SHM systems and the reason for moving towards an automated monitoring system. In order to automate the bridge assessment and monitoring process, a mechanism for the linkage of Digital Twins (DT) and Machine Learning (ML), namely the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm, is discussed in detail. The basis of this mechanism lies in the collection of data from the real bridge using sensors and is providing the basis for the establishment and calibration of the digital twin. Then, data analysis and decision-making processes are to be carried out through regression-based ML algorithms. So, in this study, both ML brain and a DT model are merged to support the decision-making of the bridge management system and predict or even prevent further damage or collapse of the bridge. With the wide application of power cables in the field of transmission and distribution and the increasing emphasis of power departments on the reliability, safety and stability of power cable operation, how to more accurately and quickly analyze the temperature distribution of power cables and how to evaluate the running state of power cables have become research hotspots. Through the combination of finite element calculation and the artificial intelligence method, an innovative method of digital twin cable temperature prediction based on RF-GPR is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the finite element method is used to calculate the coupling of the electromagnetic field and temperature field of a 10 kV AC cable laid in the cable trench, and a certain amount of basic data are provided through the finite element calculation results. Then, using the basic principle of the random forest (RF) variable importance score, the RF-GPR cable temperature prediction model is constructed using the series hybrid model and Gaussian process regression (GPR), the model prediction results are compared and analyzed, and the calculation time is improved by about 1500 times. Diamond cutting-tool wear has a direct impact on the processing accuracy of the machined surface in ultra-precision diamond cutting. It is difficult to monitor the tool's condition because of the slight wear amount. This paper proposed a hybrid deep learning model for tool wear state prediction in ultra-precision diamond cutting. The cutting force was accurately estimated and the wear state of the diamond tool was predicted by using the hybrid deep learning model with the motion displacement, velocity, and other signals in the machining process. By carrying out machining experiments, this method can classify diamond-tool wear condition with an accuracy of more than 85%. Autonomy is being adopted in multiple industrial contexts, but divergences arise when formalizing the concept of autonomous systems. To develop an implementation of autonomous manufacturing systems, it is essential to specify what autonomy means, how autonomous manufacturing systems are different from other autonomous systems, and how autonomous manufacturing systems are identified and achieved through the main features and enabling technologies. With a comprehensive literature review, this paper provides a definition of autonomy in the manufacturing context, infers the features of autonomy from different engineering domains, and presents a five-level model of autonomy — associated with maturity levels for the features — to ensure the complete identification and evaluation of autonomous manufacturing systems. Robotic systems have become a standard tool in modern manufacturing due to their unique characteristics, such as repeatability, precision, and speed, among others. One of the main challenges of robotic manipulators is the low degree of reliability. Low reliability increases the probability of disruption in manufacturing processes, minimizing in this way the productivity and by extension the profit of the company. To address the abovementioned challenges, this research work proposes a robotic cell reliability optimization method based on digital twin and predictive maintenance. Concretely, the simulation of the robot is provided, and emphasis is given to the reliability optimization of the robotic cell's critical component. A supervised machine learning model is trained, aiming to detect and classify the faulty behavior of the critical component. Furthermore, a framework is proposed for the remaining useful life prediction with the aim to improve the reliability of the robotic cell. In this paper the concept of a DT is explained and analysis possibilities throughout the life-cycle of a product and its production system are explored. The paper is devoted to the digital transformation of the core engineering maintenance processes involved in medium-voltage overhead distribution network infrastructure inspection. The study presents an analysis of digital twin utilization for inspection of the infrastructure of medium-voltage overhead distribution networks. At present, the infrastructure monitoring process is still manual, and its automatization is a challenging task due to the large distances between and small dimensions of the elements involved. The proposed digital twin is employed for 3D infrastructure modeling and complex analysis based on photogrammetry and aerial scanning data processing methods. The paper describes practical use cases for these data-driven methods for specific infrastructure management processes, e.g., scheduled inspection processes, including geometrical parameter measurements and visual infrastructure element defect identification, unplanned inspection processes (state of emergency, post-storm, etc.), and vegetation management processes. The proposed method allows operations to be performed remotely without physical presence in the field. At the same time, data-driven solutions provide objective results and potential automation via machine learning algorithms, which are more profitable economically. As the proposed method allows processes to be performed remotely, these data-driven solutions offer cost-effective results for automation.
