Skeletal radiographs along with dental examination are frequently used for age estimation in medicolegal cases where documentary evidence pertaining to age is not available. Wrist and hand radiographs are the most common skeletal radiograph considered for age estimation. Other parts imaged are elbow, shoulder, knee, and hip according to suspected age categories. Age estimation by wrist radiographs is usually done by the Tanner-Whitehouse method where the maturity level of each bone is categorized into stages and a final total score is calculated that is then transformed into the bone age. Careful assessment and interpretation at multiple joints are needed to minimize the error and categorize into age-group. In this article, we aimed to summarize a suitable radiographic examination and interpretation for bone age estimation in living children, adolescents, young adults, and adults for medicolegal purposes. Background Trauma is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide among children. Nonoperative management is the standard of care in hemodynamically stable children with blunt abdominal solid organ injury. Embolization is a potential pathway, which has shown increasing evidence for benefit in adult trauma patients. However, the data in children is limited. Materials and Methods A retrospective analysis of hospital data of all children (<18 years of age), presenting to a tertiary-care trauma center in India, with history of blunt trauma from January 2021 to June 2023, was performed. Preprocedural imaging, angiographic and embolization details, number of blood transfusions, and length of hospital stay were assessed. Results Two hundred and sixteen children (average age: 11.65 years) presented with a history of abdominal trauma during the study period. Eighty four children were FAST positive, out of whom, 67 patients had abdominal solid organ injury on computed tomography. Liver was the most commonly injured solid organ (n = 45), followed by the spleen and kidney. Ten children had solid abdominal organ arterial injuries for which eight children underwent embolization. The average length of hospital stay in embolization group (n = 8) was 4 days, as compared to 11 days in children undergoing operative management (n = 2). At 6 months follow-up, all children were asymptomatic. Conclusion Superselective embolization is a safe and feasible procedure in appropriately selected children with abdominal injury. INTRODUCTION India has unique tobacco-free film and TV rules designed to prevent tobacco uptake. In this study, we examined the potential influence of exposure to smoking imagery in regionally famous films, on susceptibility to smoke in teenagers enrolled in schools in a district in Southern India. METHODS A longitudinal survey of students, in grades 6 to 8 at baseline in 2017 and grades 7 to 9 one year later in 2018, ascertained prospective incident susceptibility to smoking during the study period in relation to baseline exposure to 27 locally popular films with actual or implied smoking imagery. RESULTS We analyzed linked data from 33676 participants, and 3973 (11.8%) of the adolescents reported incident susceptibility. There was a significant increase in susceptibility to smoking with increasing exposure at baseline to smoking imagery in films on univariable analysis, highest tertile of exposure relative to no exposure (OR=1.4; 95% CI: 1.0 -2.1, ptrend<0.001), and this trend remained significant (p=0.022) after mutual adjustment for recognized confounders, highest vs no exposure (AOR=1.3; 95% CI: 0.9-1.8). We found no statistically significant association between exposure to tobacco-free film rules and change in susceptibility. CONCLUSIONS Prospectively, watching films featuring smoking imagery increases adolescents' vulnerability to smoking. Further research revealed no difference in susceptibility change between youth who saw partially compliant films and those who watched non-compliant films. Introduction: The environment poses an important risk in the causation of injuries in children. Simple measures in improving the safety of the domestic and peri-domestic environment can go a long way in preventing injuries. This study was conducted to assess the effect of training of the adolescents in the families, on the household environmental safety regarding childhood injuries. Materials and Methods: A pre- and post-intervention study was conducted over 16 months, on 116 families of two villages of Delhi. Data were collected regarding domestic and peri-domestic environments along with danger points with respect to injuries, of the enrolled houses, during the pre- and post-intervention phases of 4 months each. The intervention comprised training of the eldest adolescent of the family, on causes of common injuries and role of environment in injury causation. Scores were assigned to all relevant aspects, and the total environmental safety scores were calculated. The comparison was made between pre- and post-intervention scores of the two areas. Results: Environmental safety scores were more than 70% in both areas at the baseline with no difference between the two areas. In the intervention area, there was statistically significant improvement of scores after the intervention, in the domestic environment and danger signs within the houses. Conclusion: Training adolescents about the prevention of injuries and motivating them to remain vigilant over domestic environment are effective in bringing about significant change in the household environment with regard to safety from injuries in children. Background: Treatment of depressive episodes in young patients is challenging owing to several reasons such as poor diagnostic stability and atypical presentation. Evidence regarding treating such patients with antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) is not clear. Methods: Fifty patients aged 10-24 years diagnosed with depressive episodes and drug-free for at least 3 months were rated on Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI), The Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), and Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation (BSS). The scores of BSS and BDI were compared across four timeframes (weeks 0, 2, 4, and 6) for MDQ-positive and negative patients by using the generalized estimating equations model. Results: Patients who were MDQ-positive (11 patients) tended to score higher on BDI (at weeks 2 and 4) and BSS (at weeks 2, 4, and 6) as compared to MDQ-negative patients (39 patients). After being started on SSRI, MDQ-positive patients showed a poorer response as compared to the other group. The small sample size and short follow-up duration were the major limitations. Conclusions: Close clinical monitoring with regular follow-up during antidepressant initiation is recommended to reduce the risk of suicidality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of a nutrition education intervention between the control and experimental groups of school-going girls. Methods: Using multistage random sampling, a school-based pre-post quasi-experimental study was conducted among 472,10-19-year-old adolescent girls in Lucknow, India. The respondents were divided into a control group (CG) and an experimental group (EG). EG was exposed to a self-designed documentary on topics related to a balanced diet, while CG was not. Results: Most girls had inadequate knowledge pre-intervention (t(471) =10.8,p<.001) in both CG and EG. Post-intervention scores improved significantly [t(471)=8.496,p=.00]. The number of respondents with "inadequate" knowledge decreased from 130 to 79 in EG, while those with "adequate" knowledge increased from 34 to 86. Conclusion: Overall, the findings underscore the effectiveness of audio-visual aid in filling the knowledge gap among adolescent girls in a school setting. It also emphasizes the need to implement customised and targeted nutrition education programmes for adolescent girls. The results show that knowledge levels of respondents were below average, which upon nutrition education intervention, improved. Background The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the use of online schooling in order to comply with national and local lockdown guidelines. Online learning required students and teachers to adapt to a new method of schooling. The inability of adolescents to adapt to their environment can interfere with their psychosocial condition and become a risk factor for functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID). Objective To determine the prevalence of FGID in adolescents and evaluate possible risk factors that existed during online learning. Methods This cross-sectional study was done in children aged 12-18 years who participated in online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The diagnosis of FGID was based on Rome IV criteria. Psychosocial problems were assessed using the Pediatric Symptom Checklist Questionnaire-17 (PSC-17) which includes internalization, externalization, and attention subscales. Subjects with a PSC-17 mixed subscale total score of >15 were considered as having an increased likelihood of having a behavioral health disorder. Data were collected by online questionnaires via Google Forms. Results Of 1,413 participants, 23% experienced FGID; of these, 32.6% had >2 FGID diagnostic criteria. Upon multivariate analysis, internalization psychosocial problems were the most common risk factors for FGID, followed by mixed subscale psychosocial problems, unstable internet connection, and not understanding of the material. Conclusion The prevalence of FGID in adolescents in this study is 23%. Background: Lower gut bleeding is an alarming sign among caregivers. Determining the etiology is of utmost importance for further management. This is the first study conducted in northernmost India. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Pediatrics, Government Medical College, Srinagar. This study aimed to describe the etiology of lower gastrointestinal bleeding in the age group of 1-18 years over the past 5 years from June 2017 to June 2022. Results: A total of 310 children presented with hematochezia (53.5%), blood mixed with loose stools for > 2 weeks (39.3%), melena (1.9%), and occult blood in stools (0.3%). The mean age was 5.12 years. The age group of 1-6 years was 73.5 %. The most common findings were rectosigmoid polyps n = 104 (33.5%), anal fissure n = 47 (15.1%), lymphoid nodular hyperplasia (LNH) n = 38 (12.2%), trichuris dysentery syndrome n = 30(9.7%), cow's milk protein allergy n = 27(8.7%), non-specific colitis n = 18(5.8%), solitary rectal ulcer syndrome n = 14(4.5%), inflammatory bowel disease n = 6 (1.9%),intestinal tuberculosis n = 3(0.9%), duodenal dieulafoy lesion 1(0.3%), and blue bleb nevus rubber syndrome n = 1(0.3%). 21 patients had a normal colonoscopy. The colonoscopy yield was 93.3 %. Among the colonoscopy-negative patients, 6(1.6%) had Meckel's diverticulum, and 1(0.3%) had a duodenal dieulafoy lesion. Conclusion: Lower GI bleeding most commonly presents as hematochezia, and the most common cause is a rectosigmoid polyp. Colonoscopy is the procedure of choice to evaluate the etiology of lower GI bleeding. Introduction and Aims : Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is an important cause of heart failure (HF) among children. Research on pediatric DCM remains surprisingly scarce. The primary objective of the study was to evaluate the clinical profile and outcomes of pediatric DCM and the secondary objective was to study the predictors of outcome. Methods and Results : We enrolled all patients with cardiomyopathy who presented to us between 1990 and 2020 and were younger than 18 years. During the 30-year study period, we identified 233 cases of pediatric cardiomyopathy. One hundred and nineteen (51%) cases had DCM. This retrospective cohort was analyzed to study their outcome and the possible predictors of outcome. Nearly, 8% presented in the neonatal period, and 37% in infancy. The most common mode of presentation was dyspnea on exertion (71%). Ninety-three patients presented in heart failure (78%). The median left ventricular dimension z-score in diastole was 4.3 (range 2.5--9.06). The median left ventricle (LV) ejection fraction was 31%. Seventy-two percent of this cohort were on angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors, 40% on aldosterone antagonists, and 47% on beta-blockers. One-third had syndromic, metabolic, genetic, or any secondary cause identified. Twenty-seven patients satisfied the three-tiered clinical classification for the diagnosis of probable acute myocarditis. Over a mean follow-up of 3.29 years, 27% were lost to follow-up. Among the remaining patients who were on follow-up (n = 86), 39 (45%) died, 31 (36%) recovered, and 16 (18%) had persistent LV dysfunction. Heart Failure was the most common cause of death. Eight patients in this cohort (4.2%) had thromboembolic phenomena. Nine had sustained ventricular arrhythmias and six had atrial/junctional arrhythmias. Among the various risk factors studied, only infantile onset had a significant relationship with death or ventricular arrhythmias (P value-- 0.05). The 5-year survival rate of DCM patients was 59%. Conclusion : A reasonably good percentage of our population showed recovery of the left ventricular function (36%). Ossification centres of bones play vital role in age determination. It is accepted in court of law. Method: 45 Boys and 45 Girls (total 90) children aged between 11 to 18 years were studied radiologically and classified their numbers as per age and sex, Appearance and fusion of bones of elbow joints. Results: Equal number of boys and girls were selected from 11 years to 18 years of age. Appearance of trochlea at 11 years appeared only in girls. Fusion of trochlea was 14 to 15 years in boys, 12 to 14 years in girls. Appearance of lateral epicondyle was 11 to 12 year in boys and 11 year in girls. Fusion of lateral epicondyle was 13 to 16 years in boys and 13 to 14 years in Girls. Fusion of medial epicondyle 14 to 16 years in boys, 11 to 15 years in girls. Fusion of head of radius 11 to 16 years in boys and 11 to 13 in girls. Appearance of olecranon process- 11 to 13 years in boys and 11 years in girls. Fusionof olecranon process 17 to 18 years in boys and 15 to 16 years in girls. Conclusion: This pragmatic radiological study of elbow joint between 11 to 18 years has regional, environmental, anatomical, anthropological and medico-legal importance because morphometric values of mesodermal origin are uncertain. COVID-19 has caused mayhem in the life of people. It has disrupted the social fabric of life. The children and adolescent population has been particularly affected by its direct and indirect effects. This systematic review aims to find the prevalence of depression and anxiety in children and adolescent age groups. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines for finding the prevalence of depression and anxiety. We found the total number of participants to be 71,016. A random effect model was used for conducting meta-analysis. The prevalence of depression was mentioned in 17 studies of 23 and the pooled prevalence was 27% [95% confidence interval: 21%-36%] and heterogeneity (I 2 statistics; P <.00001) was 100%. The prevalence of anxiety was found in 20 studies of 23 and the pooled anxiety prevalence was 25% (95% confidence interval: 16%-41%) and heterogeneity (I 2 statistics; P < .00001) was found to be 100%. The summary of the findings has been provided. Due to high heterogeneity, moderator analysis was performed separately for depression and anxiety subgroups. The study design consisted of cross-sectional studies and some studies conducted through online surveys. The age range varied considerably from 1 year to 19 years; 5 studies had participants aged more than 19 years, but the mean age of the total sample was less than 18 years. We conclude that indeed there is a mental health epidemic among the child and adolescent population. We recommend early intervention and tailored made strategies should for management. Background: Multidrug-resistant (MDR) organisms in the critical care unit are a worldwide concern. The vulnerability to MDR infection in pediatric patients admitted in neurocritical care are due to altered mental status, immature immune system, higher risk of aspiration, and more frequent use of invasive devices. We aimed to measure the burden of MDR infection in pediatric neurosurgical intensive care unit (NSICU) patients. Methods: All pediatric patients between 1 and 18 years for intracranial and spine surgeries admitted for more than 48 hours in NSICU were enrolled in the study. If patients showed a clinical picture of pneumonia, blood stream infection (BSI), or urinary tract infection (UTI) after receiving mechanical ventilation or an indwelling device for at least 48 hours, samples of tracheal aspirates, urine, blood, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were sent for microbiological culture. We noted the type of organism, MDR infection rate, and associated risk factors. Pearson Chi-squared test and Fisher's test were used for statistical analysis; p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: A total of 274 pediatric patients were studied. In 1 year, there was a total of 1790 patient days. The inclusive MDR infection rate was 17.3/1000 patient days. Also, Klebsiella pneumoniae (38.7%) was the commonest MDR pathogen. The commonest source of infection was BSI (32.3%). The risk factors associated with MDR infections were the length of stay in NSICU, mechanical ventilation of more than 5 days, emergency surgery, respiratory and cardiac comorbidities, and poor nutrition status (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The MDR infection rate in our study was 17.3/1000 patient days in pediatric patients. Also, K. pneumonias was found to be the commonest MDR pathogen. Purpose: This experiential account describes the process and observed impact of including music therapy-informed techniques into community-based rehabilitation for two boys with disabilities in rural India. The aim is to inform other CBR facilitators and grassroots organisations of the potential of including music in CBR. Method: This is reported from the perspective of two experienced CBR programme leaders. While their experiences of integrating music into CBR are narrated, the methods used are reported elsewhere in an accessible format (see in-text for link). The individual cases are part of an international research collaboration between Australian music therapists and Indian CBR facilitators. Results: In the two cases described, music in CBR supported existing physical development goals, and increased motivation and engagement in CBR for the children and their supporting communities. Conclusion and Implications: Online peer-mentoring between music therapists and CBR facilitators can support CBR facilitators to use music in ways that supplement their existing skills. It also offers novel and engaging new ways for them to motivate participation and support development for children with disabilities and their families. Anaemia control programmes in India are hampered by a lack of representative evidence on anaemia prevalence, burden and associated factors for adolescents. The aim of this study was to: (1) describe the national and subnational prevalence, severity and burden of anaemia among Indian adolescents; (2) examine factors associated with anaemia at national and regional levels. Data (n = 14,673 individuals aged 10–19 years) were from India's Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS, 2016–2018). CNNS used a multistage, stratified, probability proportion to size cluster sampling design. Prevalence was estimated using globally comparable age‐ and sex‐specific cutoffs, using survey weights for biomarker sample collection. Burden analysis used prevalence estimates and projected population from 2011 Census data. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to analyse factors (diet, micronutrient deficiencies, haemoglobinopathies, sociodemographic factors, environment) associated with anaemia. Anaemia was present in 40% of girls and 18% of boys, equivalent to 72 million adolescents in 2018, and varied by region (girls 29%–46%; boys 11%–28%) and state (girls 7%–62%; boys 4%–32%). Iron deficiency (ferritin < 15 μg/L) was the strongest predictor of anaemia (odds ratio [OR]: 4.68, 95% confidence interval [CI]: [3.21,6.83]), followed by haemoglobinopathies (HbA2 > 3.5% or any HbS) (OR: 2.81, 95% CI: [1.66,4.74]), vitamin A deficiency (serum retinol <20 ng/ml) (OR: 1.86, 95% CI: [1.23,2.80]) and zinc deficiency (serum zinc < 70 μg/L) (OR: 1.32, 95% CI: [1.02,1.72]). Regional models show heterogeneity in the strength of association between factors and anaemia by region. Adolescent anaemia control programmes in India should continue to address iron deficiency, strengthen strategies to identify haemoglobinopathies and other micronutrient deficiencies, and further explore geographic variation in associated factors. Key messages: The Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS) 2016–2018 is the only nationally representative survey to measure haemoglobin, haemoglobinopathies, biomarkers of micronutrient deficiencies, diet and social factors in Indian adolescents aged 10–19 years.Using CNNS data, we found that 28.5% of adolescents (girls: 39.6%, boys: 17.6%) were anaemic, with variation by region or state.Our prevalence estimates translate to 72 million adolescents being anaemic, with Uttar Pradesh having twice as many anaemic adolescents as any other state.Iron deficiency, haemoglobinopathies, vitamin A deficiency and zinc deficiency were associated with an increased risk of anaemia; these associations may vary subnationally. Objective: Persistent shock (PS) or recurrent shock (RS) after initial fluids and vasoactives can be secondary to myriad complex mechanisms, and these patients can have a high mortality. We developed a noninvasive tiered hemodynamic monitoring approach which included, in addition to basic echocardiography, cardiac output monitoring and advanced Doppler studies to determine the etiology and provide targeted therapy of PS/RS. Design: Prospective observational study. Setting: Tertiary Care Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, India. Methods: A pilot conceptual report describing the clinical presentation of 10 children with PS/RS using advanced ultrasound and noninvasive cardiac output monitoring. Children with PS/RS after initial fluids and vasoactive agents despite basic echocardiography underwent BESTFIT + T3 (Basic Echocardiography in Shock Therapy for Fluid and Inotrope Titration) with lung ultrasound and advanced 3-tiered monitoring (T1-3). Results: Among 10/53 children with septic shock and PS/RS over a 24-month study period, BESTFIT + T3 revealed combinations of right ventricular dysfunction, diastolic dysfunction (DD), altered vascular tone, and venous congestion (VC). By integrating information obtained by BESTFIT + T1-3 and the clinical context, we were able to modify the therapeutic regimen and successfully reverse shock in 8/10 patients. Conclusion: We present our pilot results with BESTFIT + T3, a novel approach that can noninvasively interrogate major cardiac, arterial, and venous systems that may be particularly useful in regions where expensive rescue therapies are out of reach. We suggest that, with practice, intensivists already experienced in bedside POCUS can use the information obtained by BESTFIT + T3 to direct time-sensitive precision cardiovascular therapy in persistent/recurrent pediatric septic shock. Fe deficiency has negative effects on voluntary physical activity (PA); however, the impact of consuming Fe-biofortified staple foods on voluntary PA remains unclear. This study compared the effects of consuming Fe-biofortified pearl millet or a conventional pearl millet on measures of voluntary PA in Indian schoolchildren (ages 12–16 years) during a 6-month randomised controlled feeding trial. PA data were collected from 130 children using Actigraph GT3X accelerometers for 6 d at baseline and endline. Minutes spent in light and in moderate-to-vigorous PA were calculated from accelerometer counts using Crouter's refined two-regression model for children. Mixed regression models adjusting for covariates were used to assess relationships between intervention treatment or change in Fe status and PA. Children who consumed Fe-biofortified pearl millet performed 22·3 (95 % CI 1·8, 42·8, P = 0·034) more minutes of light PA each day compared with conventional pearl millet. There was no effect of treatment on moderate-to-vigorous PA. The amount of Fe consumed from pearl millet was related to minutes spent in light PA (estimate 3·4 min/mg Fe (95 % CI 0·3, 6·5, P = 0·031)) and inversely related to daily sedentary minutes (estimate −5·4 min/mg Fe (95 % CI –9·9, −0·9, P = 0·020)). Background: Worldwide, more than 1.2 billion population is adolescents. Nutrition, physical activity, psychological health, and sanitations are few areas that affect adolescents, making them more vulnerable to diseases and contributing in disease burden. The present study was part of the Indian Council of Medical Research's (ICMR) school based health program Mission SHAKTTI which focused, and reported on adolescents' awareness and health literacy about nutrition, physical activity, and sanitation in Delhi. Methods: A cross-sectional qualitative study was conducted with students (aged 11-19 years), and the Mission SHAKTTI program was devised using the pillars of Gandhi's teachings for good health. Data were collected using a pre-tested open ended questionnaire (n=1796). For data analysis, deductive approach was adopted, and thematic content analysis was done with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: The study showed that students were somewhat aware of various healthrelated issues pertaining to Mahatma Gandhi's ideology of health, with 49.5% (CI: 46.72-51.39) reported that Gandhiji's mantra for staying healthy was simply a clean environment and proper sanitation. A gap between their understanding and perceptions of a balanced diet was observed, since many felt that merely eating enough food could labelled as balanced diet (36.46%; CI: 34.24-38.74). Conclusions: Findings may be useful in developing a suitable health-based educational program to inculcate knowledge about healthy practices among school-aged children through Gandhian health ideology. Aim: The aim of the study was o define the preoperative diagnostic clinical and radiological features in girls with congenital pouch colon (CPC). Materials and Methods: Records of 47 girls with CPC, managed from 1996 to 2018, were reviewed. There were two age groups: Group A (newborn to 12 months; n = 26) and Group B (>12 months to 20 years; n = 21). The important clinical and radiologic features to help in a preoperative diagnosis were noted. Results: The most common subtype was Type II (57.4%), followed by Type I (23.4%) and Type III (12.8%). The features common to both the groups were abdominal distension (A = 53.8%; B = 9.52%), severe perineal excoriation (A = 19.2%; B = 23/8%), and urinary incontinence (A = 30.7%; B = 85.7%). In addition, in Group B, fecaloma on abdominal palpation was noted in 28.6% of patients. The characteristic appearance of the perineum including external genitalia and findings on plain abdominal X-ray (AXR) were 100% accurate and hence diagnostic. These unique features helped us formulate an algorithm for preoperative diagnosis of this uncommon form of anorectal malformation in girls seen in North India. Conclusions: The characteristic features on clinical examination should alert one to the presence of CPC in the outpatient clinic. The AXR was diagnostic in 100% of cases and is mandatory. If any doubt persists, examination of the genitalia under anesthesia with more retraction of the labial folds and endoscopy can be performed for confirmation. Context: Adnexal masses in girls represent a wide pathological spectrum. We performed a retrospective analysis of clinical and diagnostic aspects of adnexal masses in girls. Aims: To analyze the clinical characteristics and surgical management of adnexal masses in children and adolescents. Settings and Design: Retrospective observational analysis from 2000 to 2020. Subjects and Methods: This analysis was performed on 28 children under the age of 17 years with adnexal masses who were managed by us at tertiary care centers of Delhi-NCR. Patients were analyzed based on their age at the time of admission, their presenting complaints, clinical and radiological findings, tumor markers, management, and follow-up. Results: The age ranged between newborn and 17 years. Abdominal pain, nausea with vomiting, and abdominal lump was the most common presenting complaints. Pelvic ultrasound with or without color Doppler done in all patients and computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging was performed in seven patients preoperatively. Adnexal masses were unilateral in 26 (92.85%) patients and bilateral in 2 (7.15%) patients. Five babies had antenatal diagnosis of ovarian cysts. Serum alpha fetoprotein (AFP) and beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (b-HCG) were normal in all 19 tested patients. Cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) was raised in three ovarian tumors out of 9 tested patients. Laparoscopy was performed in 23 out of 28 patients (30 ovaries). Ovarian cyst torsion was present in 50% patients. Ovarian cystectomy was done in 10 (33.3%) patients. Six (20%) ovaries were saved by detorsion of the ovary and deroofing of the cyst with or without ovarian biopsy. Oophorectomy was done in five (16.7%) patients. Salpingo-oopherectomy had to be done in seven (23.3%) patients. Histopathology revealed functional nonneoplastic lesions in 18 cases (66.7%), benign neoplastic lesions in 8 cases (29.6%), and malignant neoplastic lesion in 1 case (3.7%). Conclusions: Adnexal masses in children are generally benign. AFP, b-HCG, and CA-125 in ovarian torsion are within normal limits. Urgent surgery is required if torsion is established. Background It is thought that there is a high risk of zinc deficiency in India, but there are no representative national estimates. Objectives We aimed to evaluate the national and state-level prevalence of low serum zinc concentrations (SZCs) in Indian children from the nationally representative Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey. Methods Prevalence of low SZC, adjusted for C-reactive protein, was estimated among preschool (1–4 y; n  = 7874) and school-age children (5–9 y; n  = 10,430) and adolescents (10–19 y; n  = 10,140), using SZC cutoffs defined by the International Zinc Nutrition Consultative Group. Results Prevalence of low SZC was high among adolescents (31.1%; 95% CI: 29.8%, 32.4%), compared with school-age (15.8%; 95% CI: 15.3%, 16.3%) or preschool children (17.4%; 95% CI: 16.7%, 18.0%). However, stratification of prevalence by fasting status or using an alternative lower SZC cutoff independent of fasting status led to a reduction in prevalence by 3.7% or 7.8% in children <10 y, respectively. The prevalence of low SZC was higher among rural preschool children, those belonging to households with poor socioeconomic status, and those with severe stunting or underweight. Preschool children with diarrhea (22.6%; 95% CI: 20.8%, 24.4%), productive cough (22.7%; 95% CI: 18.5%, 27.5%), or malaria/dengue (38.5%; 95% CI: 29.4%, 48.2%) in the 2 wk preceding the survey had a higher prevalence of low SZC than those without morbidity (16.5%; 95% CI: 15.9%, 17.2%; 17.6%; 95% CI: 16.9%, 18.2%; and 17.5%; 95% CI: 16.8%, 18.1%, respectively). Conclusions The national prevalence of low SZC among preschool (17%) or school-age children (16%) was <20%, which is considered the cutoff indicating a problem of public health significance; but there were variations by state and socioeconomic status. In adolescents, however, the prevalence of low SZC was 31%, which warrants further investigation. Background: The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimated that 1.1 million children and adolescents aged 14–19 years are living with diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic, progressive disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose. It is also recognized as a complex disease that affects people of different ages due to different causes. The present study aims to estimate the prevalence of pre-diabetes/diabetes at the national level. Additionally, the respective study determines the factors associated with pre-diabetes/diabetes conditions among adolescents at the national level. Methods: The data for this study was carried out from the Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS), the first-ever nationally representative nutrition survey of children and adolescents in India. The study used a sample size of 17,865 adolescent boys and 17,965 adolescent girls for the analysis. Descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis, and logistic regression analysis were done to carve out the results. Results: The prevalence of pre-diabetes/diabetes was 12.3% and 8.4% among adolescent boys and girls in India, respectively. Body mass index and Subscapular skinfold thickness were the two most important predictors of pre-diabetes/diabetes among adolescents. Further, physical activities show a negative association with pre-diabetes/diabetes. Moreover, interaction models in the present study clearly reveal the fact that adolescent girls were less likely to suffer from pre-diabetes/diabetes than adolescent boys. Additionally, it was found that the prevalence of pre-diabetes/diabetes was high among adolescent girls from lower socio-economic strata. Conclusion: The high prevalence of pre-diabetes and diabetes among adolescents portrayed serious public health concern in India. As body mass index and Subscapular skinfold thickness were positively associated with pre-diabetes/diabetes conditions among adolescents. Context: Skin diseases are a major cause of public concern among underprivileged people residing in orphanages. There is a need for community-based study for dermatoses in orphanages as the literature is scarce at the national and international levels. Aims: For profiling of various dermatoses to generate information on general health, nutritional status, and sanitation, and to educate about personal skin hygiene and care to inmates in urban child orphanages. Settings and Design: A cross-sectional study was conducted at 18 urban child orphanages in Tirunelveli city for 1 month. Methods and Material: A predesigned proforma was prepared and the demographic details regarding the inmates were obtained and they were screened under natural light for skin, hair, nail, and oral disorders as well as their built, nourishment, height, and weight were measured and recorded in tabulations. Statistical Analysis Used: Descriptive statistical analysis was followed for describing the prevalence of dermatoses and the age group affected which are explained in percentages and ratios. Results: Out of a total of 850 inmates, 93 (11%) were of 5–9 years and 757 (89%) were of 10–19 years. Among them, 330 (39%) were males and 520 (61%) were females. Overall, the inmates affected with dermatoses were 360 (42.4%) and infectious dermatoses were seen in 218 inmates (60.5%) and non-infectious dermatoses were seen in 142 inmates (39.5%). Adolescent females were more commonly affected and the commonest dermatoses observed were pediculosis capitis (13.6%) followed by acne vulgaris (8.1%) and in adolescent males, scabies (7.1%) was the commonest. No psychocutaneous disorders were encountered. Conclusions: Infections and infestations are common in orphanages due to a lack of awareness of personal hygiene and self-care practices. Objectives To describe the clinical profile of Asian Indian patients with Takayasu's arteritis (TAK) and to compare clinical features and outcome of childhood-onset Takayasu's arteritis (cTAK) with adult-onset TAK (aTAK). Methods Data related to clinical features and response to treatment of patients with cTAK (age of onset <16 years) and aTAK from a large observational cohort in our tertiary care teaching hospital were noted and compared. Results Altogether, 602 patients (cTAK = 119; aTAK = 483) were studied. Patients with cTAK had a blunted female: male ratio; but fever, elevated acute phase reactants, involvement of abdominal aorta or its branches, hypertension, abdominal pain, elevated serum creatinine and cardiomyopathy were more common in cTAK as compared with aTAK. Patients with aTAK were more likely to have aortic-arch disease and claudication than cTAK. During follow-up, complete remission was more common in cTAK (87% vs 66%; P < 0.01), but subsequent relapses were equally common (30% vs 27%; P = 0.63). Independent associations of disease duration at presentation with disease extent [Disease Extent Index in TAK (DEI.Tak)] and damage [TAK Damage Score (TADS)] were observed (P ≤ 0.01). Moreover, 54% of patients with symptom duration of >5 years at presentation still continued to have elevated CRP suggesting continued and active inflammation warranting escalation or inititation of immunosuppression. Conclusion Patients with cTAK are more likely to have arterial disease below the diaphragm, systemic inflammation and achieve remission. Disease of the aortic arch is more common in patients with aTAK. Longer duration of symptoms prior to initiation of immunosuppression, thereby leading to extensive disease and damage, reflects ongoing disease activity as the rule rather than exception in untreated TAK. The objective of this systematic review was to examine the pooled prevalence of common mental disorder (CMD) and to evaluate the predictability of screening instruments to detect CMD in the children and adolescent population in India. Data sources included the MEDLINE, PubMed, PyschEXTRA, and PyschINFO up to 2020, with additional studies identified from a search of reference lists to examine the diagnostic utility of tools carried out in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses guidelines, PRISMA within parentheses after the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses guidelines (PRISMA). Only studies involving children and adolescents with an independent measure of depression and anxiety in India were included. Random effects meta-analyses were employed to calculate a pooled estimate of depression prevalence. Twenty studies met all inclusion and exclusion criteria for the systematic review. The analysis showed that several tools were used in different regions of the nation to measure CMD such as the beck depression inventory (BDI), Children's Depression Rating Scale-Revised (CDRS-R), and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale. The pooled prevalence of depression was 19% (95% confidence interval (CI) = 12.57–27.12), 15% (95% CI = 4.67–30.90) for anxiety, and 11% (95% CI = 4.37–19.77) for any depressive disorder. In terms of BDI had the highest sensitivity (61%) while CDRS-R had the highest specificity (75%). Given the high heterogeneity of the studies, there is insufficient evidence that any tool accurately screens for CMD and likely to underestimate the true prevalence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multiple micronutrient deficiencies (MNDs) co‐exist, often because of poor intakes and adversely impact health. Habitual diets were assessed in 300 school children (6–17 years old) recruited from two government schools by simple random sampling. Probability of adequacy (PA) for 11 micronutrients and mean probability of adequacy (MPA) was calculated. Haemoglobin, plasma ferritin, folic acid, vitamin B12 and C‐reactive protein were estimated. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis were used to estimate magnitude and factors associated with MNDs. The contribution of fortified foods and/or supplements in addressing inadequacies and excessive intakes was modelled. The PA ranged from 0.04 for folate to 0.70 for zinc, and the MPA was 0.27. Prevalence of anaemia (53%), iron deficiency (57%; ID), iron deficiency anaemia (38%; IDA), folate deficiency (24%) and B12 deficiency (43%) was high. Dietary inadequacy of iron, zinc and a low MPA was associated with anaemia and IDA. Inclusion of double fortified salt (DFS), fortified rice (FR) or iron folic acid (IFA) supplements individually in habitual diet reduced probability of iron inadequacy significantly from 82% to ≤13%. Inclusion of DFS and FR simultaneously led to disappearance of iron inadequacy, but risk of excessive intake increased to 16%. Inclusion of DFS, FR and IFA together increased risk of excess iron intake to 40%. Nevertheless, intakes of folate and B12 remained inadequate even with FR and/or IFA. These results indicate a high risk of dietary MNDs in children and suggest need for more systematic intake measurements in representative sample and adjustment of iron dosages to avoid excessive intakes. Meitei is the main ethnic community that belongs to the north‐eastern state of Manipur in India. This community is bestowed with rich biodiverse resources with indigenous foods still form an integral part of their diet. However, limited data on the food and nutrient consumption as well as nutritional status of this community are available. This study was carried out on the children, adolescents and women of reproductive age (WRA) of this community from 12 villages, to determine their food consumption pattern and nutritional status. Basic anthropometry and 24‐h dietary intake assessment was conducted. The prevalence of underweight was 27%, stunting was 45% and wasting was 12% in children below 5 years. Stunting was observed among 34% of children 5–17 years of age. About 7% of WRA were undernourished, while 28% were overweight or obese. About 55% of 1–7 year‐old children had mean probability adequacy of 12 micronutrients <0.5, and the adequacy of individual micronutrients namely vitamin A, E and calcium were low. Dietary determinants such as low dietary diversity score, dietary species richness and the lowest tertiles of different food groups' intake (except for sugars, fish and sea foods and spices and condiments) predicted micronutrient inadequacy. In addition to a high prevalence of undernutrition in children and adolescents and overnutrition in WRA, the effect of various dietary determinants on micronutrient adequacy in the study group of the Meitei community are reported. Background: There is a paucity of literature on depression among adolescents in the north Indian community. Objectives: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of depression among adolescents residing in a rural community of north India, and to determine associated factors, psychiatric comorbidities, and functional impairment. Methods: A simple random sample of 630 adolescents aged 10-19 years was drawn. Participants were enrolled in house-to-house visits, and screened for depression using the nine-item version of Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Diagnostic confirmation and assessment of psychiatric comorbidities was done using Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview for Children and Adolescents (MINI Kid) for 10-17-year-old adolescents, and MINI for 18 year olds. Prevalence was reported with 95% confidence interval. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was done to determine the association of depression with socio-demographic and other factors. Children's Global Assessment Scale (CGAS) was used to assess functional impairment. Results: The prevalence of depression was 3.7% (95% CI: 2.3–5.2) (n = 583), comparable in both sexes. Over half the participants with depression had psychiatric comorbidities; the most common were conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; nearly two-fifth had suicidal ideas/attempt. About two-third of participants with depression had functional impairment. Depression was associated with perceived frequent conflicts at home [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 4.0 (95% CI: 1.0-16.0), P = 0.049], and perceived stressful event (s) in past six months [aOR = 7.0 (95% CI: 2.4-20.3), P < 0.01], which were predominantly related to academics. Conclusion: Study results indicate the need to strengthen diagnostic and therapeutic/rehabilitative mental health services in adolescent age group. Background: Purulent pericarditis, if not recognized and managed timely, it can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. There are no guidelines for the management of purulent pericardial effusion in pediatric patients. Aim: The study describes our experience with the management of 22 patients admitted with a primary diagnosis of purulent pericardial effusion seen over a 7-year period. Materials and Methods: Hospital records of 22 children admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit with purulent pericardial effusion during January 2012-December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Results: The mean age of presentation was 4.6 years. The most common presentation was fever. History of antecedent trauma was present in 27.27% of patients. Empyema was the most common associated infection. Staphylococcus aureus was the most commonly isolated organism. Out of 22, pericardial drainage was done in 13 patients (59%). Only one of these patients required pericardiectomy later on. Six (27.2%) patients responded to antibiotics alone. Three (13.6%) patients died before any intervention could be planned. Conclusion: Echocardiography guided percutaneous pericardiocentesis and pigtail catheter placement are a safe and effective treatment for purulent pericardial effusion. When pericardial drainage is not amenable, close monitoring of the size of effusion by serial echocardiography is required. Small residual pericardial effusion may be managed conservatively. Background: Head injury in infancy and childhood has been documented as the single most common cause of death. In India, children aged <15 years constitute 35% of the total population and contribute to 20–30% of all head injuries. In this study, we attempted to analyze the epidemiological factors, management, and outcome of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The objective of this study were to find the causes of head injury in children and its pattern of distribution in this population and to analyze the efforts required to prevent the injury and management focusing on limiting the progression of primary brain injury and minimizing secondary brain insult. Results: A total of 2714 patients with head injury were admitted at our hospital during the study period and, out of them, 508 (18.17%) were pediatric patients with age less than 18 years. Of the 508 patients, only 497 patients were included in this study. In the present study, 357 (71.83%) were males and 140 (28.16%) were females. In total, 351 cases were managed conservatively whereas surgical intervention was conducted in 146 cases (P < 0.001). In this study, the most common mode of injury was a road traffic accident (RTA) (46.88%; n=233), followed by fall from height (34.8%; n=173) (P < 0.001). It was also seen that epidural hematoma and fracture hematoma were the most common computed tomography findings in pediatric patients with head injury followed by parenchymal contusion or contusion with or without fracture followed by diffuse axonal injury. A total of 344 cases out of 497 cases were discharged with Glasgow outcome score (GOS)-5 whereas nine cases remained in a persistent vegetative state (GOS-2). Conclusion: Early intervention aimed at the primary lesion in TBI in children generally carries a good outcome, and limits as much as possible the ongoing biomechanical, physiological, and pathological sequelae post-TBI. Background: There is a sharp increase of substance use, particularly tobacco and alcohol, among schoolchildren. Aims: A study was undertaken to assess the prevalence, age of initiation, and determinants for the uptake of tobacco and alcohol habits among ever-user students. Settings and Design: This was a cross-sectional study conducted among school students. Materials and Methods: Information on alcohol and tobacco use, age at initiation, peer influence, reason of initiation, etc., was collected from students of class 7th-12th (ages: 11-19 years) studying in schools of Noida and Ghaziabad cities, through a pretested self-administered questionnaire through multistage sampling design. Univariate analysis was done to assess the significance of various determinants. Results: "Ever use of substance" (alcohol or tobacco) was found in 14.3% students and was 1.2 times more among boys in comparison to girls (P < 0.05). About 29.5% of these students initiated the habit before 11 years of age and its prevalence was significantly more among boys from government schools as compared to private schools. The habits were 2.2, 3.8, and 4.6 fold higher among students if the father, mother, siblings, or friends also used substances. Substance use was less frequent among children of white-collared father and more educated parents. One-third of students up took the habit to make friends. Conclusion: The rising prevalence of substance use among students is a threat to the society. Introducing a "substance use prevention policy" in schools to educate students about various adverse effects and refusal skills may help curb this menace. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aims: Brain abscess is a serious and dreadful disease presenting at tertiary centre. The objective of this study was to look into the clinical profile, predisposing conditions, microbiology and outcome of children suffering from brain abscess. Methods: 30 children up to 18 years with clinical and imaging evidence of brain abscess were taken for study. Patients were stabilized as per unit protocol. Necessary investigations were carried out. Neuroimaging (CT or MRI) was used to confirm the diagnosis. All parameters (clinical, investigation, outcome) were recorded in predesigned performa. Neurosurgery consultation was sought in patients with multiple abscesses, posterior fossa abscesses, abscess with air-fluid level and causing midline shift. Results: There were 16 males with 13 patients in age group (5-10 years). Mean duration of stay in hospital was 14.8 days. Most common predisposing factor was chronic suppurative otitis media (n-15). Typically, patients presented with fever, headache and seizures. On examination, motor deficits were the most common followed by signs of meningitis. Computerized tomography confirmed the diagnosis in most cases. Temporal lobe (n-11) was the commonest intracranial site for the abscess. Methicillin resistant staphylococcus and proteus mirabilis were the common pathogen isolated from blood and pus. Blood culture positivity rate was 16.7% and pus culture positivity rate was 25%. All cases were managed with intravenous antibiotics and aspiration (n-10) and excision (n-6). There were 5 deaths. There was complete immediate recovery in 13 cases with residual motor deficit in 12 cases. Conclusion: Brain abscess is a rare but serious entity in children. Late diagnosis and improper management leads to poor outcome. Early surgical intervention is helpful. Background: The aim of this study was to determine whether physical activity volume and intensity in mid-childhood and early adolescence were associated with cardiometabolic risk factors at 13.5 years.Methods: Participants were recruited from the Mysore Parthenon observational birth cohort. At ages 6-10 and 11-13 years, volume and intensity of physical activity were assessed using AM7164 or GT1M actigraph accelerometers worn for ≥4 days, and expressed as mean counts per day and percentage time spent in light, moderate and vigorous physical activity according to criteria defined by Evenson et al. At 13.5 years, fasting blood samples were collected; lipids, glucose and insulin concentrations were measured and insulin resistance (HOMA) was calculated. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure were measured at the left arm using a Dinamap (Criticon). Anthropometry and bio-impedance analysis were used to assess body size and composition. Metabolic and anthropometric measures were combined to produce a metabolic syndrome risk score.Results: At 6-10 years, boys and girls respectively spent a median (IQR) of 1.1 (0.5, 2.0) % and 0.8 (0.4, 1.3) % of recorded time vigorously active. At 11-13 years, boys and girls respectively spent a median (IQR) of 0.8 (0.4, 1.7) % and 0.3 (0.1, 0.6) % of time vigorously active. All of the physical activity parameters were positively correlated between the 6-10 year and the 11-13 year measurements indicating that physical activity tracked from childhood to early adolescence. There were no associations between physical activity at 6-10 years and individual 13.5 year risk factors but % time vigorously active was inversely associated with metabolic syndrome score (B = -0.40, 95% CI -0.75, 0.05). Volume of physical activity at 11-13 years was inversely associated with 13.5 year HOMA and fat percentage and vigorous physical activity was associated with HOMA, fat percentage, sum of skinfolds, waist circumference and total: HDL cholesterol ratio. Vigorous physical activity was inversely associated with metabolic syndrome score (B = -0.51, 95% CI -0.94, -0.08).Conclusions: Volume and intensity of physical activity in early adolescence were negatively associated with metabolic and anthropometric risk factors. Purpose: To study the clinical and microbiological profile, treatment modalities, and anatomical and functional outcomes among children and adolescents with endogenous endophthalmitis (EE) at a tertiary eye care centre in India.Methods: Medical records of subjects <18 years, presenting with EE from 1997 to 2007 were reviewed. Cases where the causative organism was identified were included. Treatment regimen included systemic antibiotics, vitrectomy, intravitreal antibiotics, and enucleation. Systemic evaluation to identify the source of infection was done by an internist. Microbiological analysis of blood, urine, and ocular specimens was done. The favorable anatomical outcome was defined as the attached retina, with controlled intraocular pressure and clear media at the last follow up. The favorable functional outcome was defined as vision >3/60 on the final follow up. Univariate regression analysis was done to identify factors predicting functional outcome.Results: Thirty eyes of 30 subjects (23 (77%) males) were studied. The mean age at presentation was 6.8 years (range=1-16 years). Fever was evident in four (13%) and blood culture was negative in all cases. Gram-positive organisms were identified in 11 (37%) eyes, fungi in 3 (10%), and toxocara in 8 (27%) eyes. Twenty-three (77%) eyes underwent vitrectomy. Favorable functional and anatomical outcomes were achieved in 9 (30%) and 12 (40%) eyes, respectively. Eyes undergoing vitrectomy showed significant correlation with good functional outcome (P = 0.05).Conclusion: EE is under-reported and not well studied in children. The absence of systemic features may be evident in a developing country with over the counter availability of antibiotics. Background: Depression is a common mental disorder seen across all age groups, including children and adolescents. Depression is often associated with significant disability in children and adolescents. Aim: This review aims to evaluate the Indian research on depression in children and adolescents. Results: Available data suggest that the point prevalence of depression/affective disorders ranges from 1.2% to 21% in the clinic-based studies; 3%–68% in school-based studies and 0.1%–6.94% in community studies. There has been only one incidence study from India which estimated the incidence to be 1.6%. With respect to the risk factors for depression, studies have reported various education-related difficulties, relationship issues with parents or at home, family-related issues, economic difficulties, and other factors. A limited number of studies have evaluated the symptom profile, and the commonly reported symptoms include depressed mood, diminished interest in play activities, concentration difficulties, behavior problems in the form of anger and aggression, pessimism, decreased appetite, decreased sleep, anhedonia, and somatic symptoms. None of the studies from India has evaluated the efficacy/effectiveness of various antidepressants in children and adolescents with depression. Conclusion: There is a wide variation in the point prevalence reported across different studies, which is mainly due to methodological differences across studies. Background: The lifelong responsibility of the autistic children along with the lack of knowledge, lack of treatment, and if treatment is available, it is unaffordable leads to deterioration of quality of life of the parents in several domains. Objectives: The objective is to study the quality of life of principal caregivers of autistic children and adolescents visiting health facilities in Lucknow city. Materials and Methods: The sample included 90 principal caregivers (aged < 60 years) of autistic children and adolescents aged 3-19 years and diagnosed with autism, attending government and private health facilities providing treatment for autism in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. Results: The quality of life of principal caregivers was found to be influenced most in the physical health domain (with least score). The predictors of quality of life of principal caregivers were type of family and knowledge regarding child's problem. Conclusion and Recommendations: Thus, there is an immense need of increasing awareness through information, education, and communication materials, mass media, and discussions regarding autism. Adolescence is a transitional stage of physical and psychological development that generally occurs during the period from puberty to legal adulthood. During transition from childhood to adulthood people are exposed to various hazards having potentiality to lead to unnatural deaths by distorting physical, mental and social wellbeing. Studying pattern of unnatural deaths helps stakeholders to formulate policies for prevention of loss of important human resource. The present study is a retrospective study undertaken in the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences, Hubballi, to determine the pattern of adolescents deaths (10-19 years) brought for autopsy during the period of January 2016 to December 2016. Total 82 cases were studied and it was observed that the incidence rate of adolescent deaths was 6.49% among which 43were males (52.43%) and 39 females (47.56%). Rural deaths were higher when compared to urban, accidental deaths were the highest and road traffic accidents followed by poisoning and burns were the commonest causes of deaths. In conclusion, behavior change communication of parents, teachers, career guides, office masters, law keepers etc. for fostering congenial environment for upbringings of adolescents is needed to prevent unnatural deaths. Background: Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common psychiatric illness in children and adolescents. Till date, the sample sizes in the Indian studies have been relatively small. Methodology: The present study is a retrospective chart review of a large sample of children and adolescents diagnosed with OCD in a tertiary care center Objectives: The objectives of this study were to characterize the clinical profile and to evaluate outcome of OCD in children and adolescents Results: Fear of contamination and washing/cleaning compulsions were the most common presenting symptoms. Most of the patients were male with two-thirds having a comorbid disorder. Major depressive disorder was the most common comorbid disorder. The rates of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, disruptive behavioral disorders, and tic disorders were low when compared to Western studies. One-third of the patients received adequate trial of serotonin reuptake inhibitors and 36% received cognitive behavior therapy. Fifty-four percent of patients had a poor outcome with hospitalization, longer duration of illness, earlier onset of OC symptoms, and family history of OCD being the predictors of poor outcome. Conclusion: The present study of a large sample of patients with juvenile OCD highlights the low rate of comorbid disruptive behavior disorders as reported in the earlier Indian studies and a favorable short-term outcome in approximately 56% of the patients. To test the efficacy of an intervention to reduce tobacco use among youth (10-19 years old) in slum communities in Delhi, India. This community- based cluster-randomized trial included 14 slums composed of purposely built resettlement colonies and adjacent inhabitant-built Jhuggi Jhopris. Youth in the intervention received a 2 year multiple-component intervention: (a) youth and adult leader training; (b) peer-led interactive activities and outreach; (c) tobacco cessation camps; and (d) enforcement of India's Tobacco Control Law (smoke-free environments and youth access). Overall, no differences between the intervention and control conditions were observed over time; self-reported tobacco use declined in both groups. However, when stratified by type of residence, a significant decrease was observed among youth in the resettlement colonies in the intervention group for overall tobacco use (slope=-0.69) and cigarette and bidi smoking (slope=-0.66), compared to an increase in the control group (slope=0.24 and 0.12, respectively) (P<0.001). No differences in smokeless tobacco (SLT) use were observed for either group. Comprehensive community-based interventions that engage youth can be effective in reducing smoking among disadvantaged youth in India. Background: Detailed Assessment of Speed of Handwriting Test (DASH) is a standardised test which can be administered individually or in groups. It is comprised of 5 tasks that assist to analyse different aspects of the skill of handwriting speed. Handwriting is a complex skill which is important for a child's competency at school. In past few studies, students have scored more than its normative sample because of cross-cultural differences and other factors. Hence, this study was done with the purpose to get a preliminary data on performance of typically developing Indian children on DASH. Objective: To assess performance of typically developing Indian children aged 9-16 years on 5 tasks of DASH: copy best, alphabet writing, copy fast, graphic speed and free writing. To compare performance of typically developing Indian children with the original normative sample of DASH. To explore gender differences in typically developing Indian children on performance of DASH. Study Design: Observational study Methods: Approval of the Institutional Ethics Committee has taken before starting this study. Typically developing Indian children aged between 9-16 years are included in this study after taking their parent's consent. It is one time evaluation done either individually or in groups and the scores are recorded. Statistical Analysis will be done to compare their performance with the original normative sample and across gender. Results: There is difference between performances of typically developing Indian children from original normative data and also gender differences exist, because of different cultural and educational environment.
