The imperative for lightweighting technologies, paramount in mission-critical cyber-physical systems (CPSs) including aerospace, automotive and allied sectors, hinges upon optimizing energy efficiency and curbing product weight. Honeycomb structures, celebrated for their exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, have indisputably guided the pursuit of lightweight design. This paper expounds upon the versatility of honeycomb structures by scrutinizing their in-plane mechanical attributes. Leveraging finite element simulations and polynomial fitting, we enhance the prevailing equivalent elastic modulus model for uniform honeycomb structures, expanding its domain to encompass a broader spectrum of relative density values. Deliberations ensue concerning the model's constraints and its inapplicability to nonuniform honeycomb structures. The investigation introduces nodes as pivotal influencers in the mechanical comportment of nonuniform honeycomb structures, delineating the nexus between the equivalent elastic modulus and node dimensions through a fusion of finite element simulations and mechanical experimentation. Furthermore, this research delves into the tenets and constructs of density-based variable density methodologies within the ambit of topology optimization, with an overarching goal of maximizing stiffness. We furnish a holistic design protocol for optimizing honeycomb structures, underscored by a pragmatic instantiation of the density-based variable density approach. Scrutinizing the geometric interplay between honeycomb structures and design spaces, we posit an innovative paradigm employing concentric circles to approximate cellular envelopes, streamlining numerical cartography and the conversion of optimization outputs into variable density honeycomb configurations. Evaluation of the in-plane mechanical attributes of variable density honeycomb structures reveals that TPU material augments the resilience of both uniform and variable density honeycomb structures, whereas topology optimization amplifies specific stiffness and resilience modulus in variable density honeycomb structures relative to their uniform counterparts. Honeycomb structures made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) are increasingly used in the aerospace field due to their excellent energy absorption capability. Attention has been paid to CFRP structures in order to accurately simulate their progressive failure behavior and discuss their ply designability. In this study, the preparation process of a CFRP corrugated sheet (half of the honeycomb structure) and a CFRP honeycomb structure was illustrated. The developed finite element method was verified by a quasi-static test, which was then used to predict the low-velocity impact (LVI) behavior of the CFRP honeycomb, and ultimately, the influence of the ply angle and number on energy absorption was discussed. The results show that the developed finite element method (including the user-defined material subroutine VUMAT) can reproduce the progressive failure behavior of the CFRP corrugated sheet under quasi-static compression and also estimate the LVI behavior. The angle and number of plies of the honeycomb structure have an obvious influence on their energy absorption under LVI. Among them, energy absorption increases with the ply number, but the specific energy absorption is basically constant. The velocity drop ratios for the five different ply angles are 79.12%, 68.49%, 66.88%, 66.86%, and 60.02%, respectively. Therefore, the honeycomb structure with [0/90]s ply angle had the best energy absorption effect. The model proposed in this paper has the potential to significantly reduce experimental expenses, while the research findings can provide valuable technical support for design optimization in aerospace vehicle structures. Honeycomb is a splendid kind of structure for aerospace engineering with the advantages of light weight, good shock absorption, and good structural stability. This article aims to provide methods to isolate Pyroshocks based on a honeycomb structure and guarantee the safety of such equipment against a high-frequency shock response. According to stress wave theory, an equation for stress wave transmittance of the honeycomb structure is derived considering the effect of cell wall length and thickness, where desirable honeycomb parameters are obtained. The complexity of the transfer path of the honeycomb structure is exploited to build the spacecraft–rocket interface, which could increase the impedance of the stress wave dramatically. Both finite element analysis and experiments are carried out to validate the shock isolation strategies. The influence of parameters, such as cell wall length and the thickness of the stainless-steel honeycomb, on the isolation performance is analyzed. It is revealed that the honeycomb structure has a significant effect on Pyroshock isolation performance when the wall length of the honeycomb cell is 8 mm and the thickness of the cell is 0.1 mm. The inserts supporting run-flat tire (ISRFT) is mainly used in military off-road vehicles, which need to maintain high mobility after a blowout. Regulations show that the ISRFT can be driven safely for at least 100 km at a speed of 30 km/h to 40 km/h under zero-pressure conditions. However, the ISRFT generates serious heat during zero-pressure driving, which accelerates the aging of the tire rubber and degrades its performance. In order to study the thermo-mechanical coupling characteristics of the ISRFT, a three-dimensional finite element model verified by bench tests was established. Then, the stress–strain, energy loss and heat generation of the ISRFT were analyzed by the sequential thermo-mechanical coupling method to obtain the steady-state temperature field (SSTF). Finally, four kinds of honeycomb inserts bodies were designed based on the tangent method, and the SSTF of the honeycomb and the original ISRFT were compared. The results indicated that the high-temperature region of the ISRFT is concentrated in the shoulder area. For every 1 km/h increase in velocity, the temperature at the shoulder of the tire increases by approximately 1.6 °C. The SSTF of the honeycomb ISRFT is more uniformly distributed, and the maximum temperature of the shoulder decreases by about 30 °C, but the maximum temperature of the tread increases by about 40 °C. The novelty of this research lies in the successful fabrication of a 3D-printed honeycomb structure filled with nanofillers for acoustic properties, utilizing an impedance tube setup in accordance with ASTM standard E 1050-12. The Creality Ender-3, a 3D printer, was used for printing the honeycomb structures, and polylactic acid (PLA) material was employed for their construction. The organic, inorganic, and polymeric compounds within the composites were identified using fourier transformation infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The structure and homogeneity of the samples were examined using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). To determine the sound absorption coefficient of the 3D printed honeycomb structure, numerous samples were systematically developed using central composite design (CCD) and analysed using response surface methodology (RSM). The RSM mathematical model was established to predict the optimum values of each factor and noise reduction coefficient (NRC). The optimum values for an NRC of 0.377 were found to be 1.116 wt% carbon black, 1.025 wt% aluminium powder, and 3.151 mm distance between parallel edges. Overall, the results demonstrate that a 3Dprinted honeycomb structure filled with nanofillers is an excellent material that can be utilized in various fields, including defence and aviation, where lightweight and acoustic properties are of great importance. A honeycomb structure is a sandwich structure widely used in fuselage, among which the hexagonal honeycomb core is the most widely used. The energy absorption characteristics and impedance ability of the structure are the main reasons that directly affect the energy absorption characteristics of the honeycomb sandwich structure. Therefore, it is necessary to study the out-of-plane mechanical properties of the composite honeycomb sandwich structure. Based on the numerical simulation results, the energy absorption characteristics of several composite honeycomb sandwich structures are verified by drop hammer impact experiments. The research shows that the transient energy absorption characteristics of the composite honeycomb sandwich structure are mainly related to the cell size of the honeycomb structure. The smaller the size of the front cell, the stronger the overall impact resistance; the strength of the composite honeycomb sandwich structure exceeds that of 7075 aluminum alloy-NOMEX and carbon fiber-NOMEX honeycomb sandwich structures. In this paper, the energy absorption characteristics of composite honeycomb sandwich structures under different impact energy are compared and studied. The displacement, force and energy curves of energy absorption characteristics related to time variables are analyzed. The difference in protective performance between the composite honeycomb sandwich structure and existing airframe structure is compared and studied. The optimal structural design parameters of composite honeycomb sandwich under low-speed impact of drop hammer are obtained. The maximum energy absorption per unit volume of the designed honeycomb sandwich structure is 171.7% and 229.8% higher than that of the NOMEX-AL and NOMEX-C structures. The 6.4 mm and 3 mm cell sizes show good characteristics in high-speed buffering and crashworthiness. The composite honeycomb sandwich airframe structure can improve the anti-damage performance of the UAV airframe structure, ensure the same thickness and lightweight conditions as the existing honeycomb sandwich airframe structure, and improve the single-core bearing mode of the existing airframe structure. Sandwich structures are often used as protective structures on ships. To further improve the energy-absorbing characteristics of traditional honeycomb sandwich structures, an energy-absorbing mechanism is proposed based on the gradient folding deformation of lotus root nodes and a leafy stem vein homogenizing load mechanism. A honeycomb sandwich structure is then designed that combines lotus root nodes and leafy stem veins. Four types of peak-nest structures, traditional cellular structure (TCS), lotus root honeycomb structure (LRHS), leaf vein honeycomb structure (LVHS), and lotus root vein combined honeycomb structure (LRVHS), were prepared using 3D printing technology. The deformation modes and energy absorption characteristics of the four honeycomb structures under quasistatic action were investigated using a combination of experimental and simulation methods. It was found that the coupling design improved the energy absorption in the structural platform region of the LRHS by 51.4% compared to that of the TCS due to its mechanical mechanism of helical twisting and deformation. The leaf vein design was found to enhance the peak stress of the structure, resulting in a 4.84% increase in the peak stress of the LVHS compared to that of the TCS. The effects of the number, thickness, and position of the leaf vein plates on the honeycomb structure were further explored. The greatest structural SEA effect of 1.28 J/g was observed when the number of leaf vein plates was four. The highest SEA of 1.36 J/g was achieved with a leaf vein plate thickness of 0.6 mm, representing a 7.3% improvement compared to that of the 0.2 mm thickness. This study presents a novel approach inspired by the hexagonal honeycomb structure found in nature, leveraging image processing algorithms to precisely define complex geometries in thermal systems. Hexagonal phase change material containers and thermally conductive fins were meticulously delineated, mirroring the intricate real-world designs of honeycombs. This innovative methodology not only streamlines setup processes but also enhances our understanding of melting dynamics within enclosures, highlighting the potential benefits of biomimetic design principles in engineering applications. Two distinct honeycomb structures were employed to investigate their impact on the melting process within cavities subject to heating from the left wall, with the remaining walls treated as adiabatic surfaces. The incorporation of a thermally conductive fin system within the enclosure significantly reduced the time required for a complete phase change, emphasizing the profound influence of fin systems on thermal design and performance. This enhancement in heat transfer dynamics makes fin systems advantageous for applications prioritizing precise temperature control and expedited phase change processes. Furthermore, the critical role of the fin system design was emphasized, influencing both the onset and location of the final point of melting. This underscores the importance of tailoring fin systems to specific applications to optimize their performance. Our study highlights the significant impact of the Rayleigh (Ra) number on the melting time in a cavity without fins, revealing a decrease from 6 to 0.4 as the Ra increased from 102 to 105; the introduction of a fin system uniformly reduced the melting time to Ste.Fo = 0.5, indicating fins' universal effectiveness in optimizing thermal dynamics and expediting the melting process. Moreover, the cavity angle was found to significantly affect the fluid fraction diagram in unfanned cavities but had minimal impact when fins were present, highlighting the stabilizing role of fins in mitigating gravitational effects during melting processes. These insights expand our understanding of cavity geometry and fin interactions in heat transfer, offering potential for enhanced thermal system designs in various engineering applications. In this paper, sorghum and reed, which possess light stem structures in nature, were selected as biomimetic prototypes. Based on their mechanical stability characteristics—the porous structure at the node feature and the porous feature in the outer skin— biomimetic optimization design, simulation, and experimental research on both the traditional hexagonal structure and a hexagonal honeycomb structure were carried out. According to the two types of straw microcell and chamber structure characteristics, as well as the cellular energy absorption structure for the bionic optimization design, 22 honeycomb structures in 6 categories were considered, including a corrugated cell wall bionic design, a modular cell design, a reinforcement plate structure, and a self-similar structure, as well as a porous cell wall structure and gradient structures of variable wall thickness. Among them, HTPC-3 (a combined honeycomb structure), HSHT (a self-similar honeycomb structure), and HBCT-257 (a radial gradient variable wall thickness honeycomb structure) had the best performance: their energy absorption was 41.06%, 17.84%, and 83.59% higher than that of HHT (the traditional hexagonal honeycomb decoupling unit), respectively. Compared with HHT (a traditional hexagon honeycomb decoupling unit), the specific energy absorption was increased by 39.98%, 17.24%, and 26.61%, respectively. The cuttlebone is known for its ability to possess high specific stiffness, progressive failure and lightweight from the porous chambered structure. Inspired by the microstructural characteristics of cuttlebone and incorporating the wall gradient design, a series of double-asymmetric honeycombs were designed and processed by LPBF. Vitrified-bond diamond composites are materials commonly used for grinding wheels in the grinding process of silicon wafer production. In this study, the mechanism of the in situ honeycomb structure formation in the sintering process of composite materials was explored by changing the binder content without adding a pore-forming agent.The results show when the content of vitrified bond is 55 wt%, the in situ honeycomb structure forms, resulting in a porosity of 60.68 % and bending strength of 23.03 MPa.The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (RS), and thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) results show that no graphitization of diamond grain occurs during sintering. The bonding ability between the vitrified bond and diamond grain, along with the microstructure of vitrified-bond diamond composites, was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Moreover, the results of energy spectrum analysis (EDS) show that the diffusion and segregation of Na at the interface between the diamond particles and the vitrified bond improve the bonding strength, and the vitrified bond can effectively bond with the diamond particles. Most natural materials have rotational and hierarchical properties, so they can show excellent mechanical properties such as shear resistance and impact resistance. In order to further improve the energy absorption characteristics of vibration absorbing structures, a new type of honeycomb structure with integral rotation and group rotation is designed and characterized. Honeycomb structures with zero Poisson's ratio show promising potential for application in variable-sweep wing aircraft. The shear properties of these honeycomb structures serve as a crucial indicator of their morphing capacity. This paper derives the linear and non-linear shear properties of a honeycomb structure with zero Poisson's ratio. A modified factor is introduced to establish a relationship between the linear and non-linear shear modulus of the honeycomb structure, simplifying the calculation method of the non-linear shear modulus. In this research work, laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) based stainless steel 316L (SS316L) was fabricated and its corrosion behaviour was analysed for the oil-gas piping application. The Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) analysis of the LPBF SS316L specimen revealed the presence of 1–2 μ m size honeycomb structure and 2–10 μ m size tabular structures. Nano-size particles in the range of 100 nm–500 nm were formed between the two tabular cells as well as their boundary regions in the LPBF SS316L specimen. The energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis of the nanoparticle confirmed the presence of Si with a percentage of 1.4% along with 15.9% of Cr and 1.6% of Mo that have the characteristic of dispersion strengthening of the LPBF SS316L specimen. In addition, the δ-ferrite phase was observed in tabular structure boundaries and intercellular regions of solute in the LPBF SS316L specimen. Moreover, among the three crystallographic orientations {001}{101}and {111}, no domination behaviour was observed from the Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) study. The Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analysis confirmed the presence of nano twin structures that had a span of several nm on the FCC austenite unit cell. These twins came under the {111} category twining that often occurred in FCC metals. A potentiodynamic polarization test was conducted on the LPBF SS316L specimen at five different time periods (i.e., 0, 7, 15, 34 and 56 h) and it was assessed that the 0 and 15 h immersion specimens exhibited superior corrosion resistance compared with other LPBF SS316L specimens. The Nyquist plot revealed that the 0 and 15 h immersion specimens offered the highest resistance value of 1846.1Ω and 1720.3 Ω, respectively against corrosion. Asymmetry, such as non-centrosymmetry in the crystal or chiral structure and local symmetry breaking, plays an important role in the discovery of new phenomena. The honeycomb structure is an example of an asymmetric structure. Ce 2 Pt 6 Al 15 is a candidate for a frustrated system with honeycomb Ce-layers, which have been reported to show near the quantum critical point. However, the ground state of Ce 2 Pt 6 Al 15 depends on the sample, and analysis of the crystal structure is difficult due to the presence of stacking disorder. We synthesized polycrystalline Ce 2 Pt 6 Al 15 using arc melting method (AM-Ce 2 Pt 6 Al 15 ) and single-crystalline Ce 2 Pt 6 Al 15 using flux method (F-Ce 2 Pt 6 Al 15 ). The prepared samples were characterized by electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA), single and powder X-ray diffraction methods, measured magnetic properties and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The composition ratio of AM-Ce 2 Pt 6 Al 15 was stoichiometric, although it contained a small amount (i.e., a few percent) of the impurity Ce 2 Pt 9 Al 16 . Meanwhile, the composition ratio of F-Ce 2 Pt 6 Al 15 deviated from stoichiometry. The X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectrum of AM-Ce 2 Pt 6 Al 15 at the Ce L 3 -edge was similar to that of CeF 3 , which possesses the Ce 3 + configuration, indicating that the valence of Ce in Ce 2 Pt 6 Al 15 is trivalent; this result is consistent with that for the magnetic susceptibility. To determine the precise structure, we analyzed the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra of Ce L 3 - and Pt L 3 -edges for Ce 2 Pt 6 Al 15 , and found that the EXAFS spectra of Ce 2 Pt 6 Al 15 can be explained not as a hexagonal Sc 0.6 Fe 2 Si 4.9 -type structure but, instead, as an orthorhombic structure with honeycomb structure. In this paper, a honeycomb membrane-type acoustic metamaterial made of a honeycomb structure with embedded membrane layers is investigated using the finite element method. This lightweight material presents excellent transmission loss (TL) at low frequency. Honeycomb structures with two and three embedded membrane layers are analyzed numerically and the effects of the number of membrane layers and of the thickness of the air gap between membranes are illustrated. Also, the influences of the membrane material properties and thickness on the TL and displacement magnitude and mode shape at different frequencies are presented. It is shown that the TL increases over a large frequency band when the honeycomb cell size decreases while the displacement magnitude of the membrane is reduced and the mode shape is affected. It is observed that the TL presents multiple resonant peaks as the thickness of the membranes is reduced. An improvement of the TL is observed around the anti-resonant frequencies by increasing the damping loss factor of the membrane, which causes a reduction of the resonant displacement magnitude and TL peaks amplitude. Batteries with high energy density are packed into compact groups to solve the range anxiety of new-energy vehicles, which brings greater workload and insecurity, risking thermal runaway in harsh conditions. To improve the battery thermal performance under high ambient temperature and discharge rate, a battery thermal management system (BTMS) based on honeycomb-structured liquid cooling and phase change materials (PCM) is innovatively proposed. In this paper, the thermal characteristics of INR18650/25P battery are studied theoretically and experimentally. Moreover, the influence of structure, material and operating parameters are studied based on verifying the simplified BTMS model. The results show that the counterflow, honeycomb structure of six cooling tubes and fins, 12% expanded graphite mass fraction and 25 mm battery spacing give a better battery thermal performance with high group efficiency. The maximum temperature and temperature difference in the battery in the optimal BTMS are 45.71 °C and 4.4 °C at the 40 °C environment/coolant, as against 30.4 °C and 4.97 °C at the 23.6 °C environment/coolant, respectively. Precooling the coolant can further reduce the maximum battery temperature in high temperature environments, and the precooling temperature difference within 5 °C could meet the uniformity requirements. Based on the traditional concave hexagonal honeycomb structure, three kinds of concave hexagonal honeycomb structures were compared. The relative densities of traditional concave hexagonal honeycomb structures and three other classes of concave hexagonal honeycomb structures were derived using the geometric structure. The impact critical velocity of the structures was derived by using the 1-D impact theory. The in-plane impact characteristics and deformation modes of three kinds of similar concave hexagonal honeycomb structures in the concave direction at low, medium, and high velocity were analyzed using the finite element software ABAQUS. The results showed that the honeycomb structure of the cells of the three types undergoes two stages: concave hexagons and parallel quadrilaterals, at low velocity. For this reason, there are two stress platforms in the process of strain. With the increase in the velocity, the joints and middle of some cells form a glue-linked structure due to inertia. No excessive parallelogram structure appears, resulting in the blurring or even disappearance of the second stress platform. Finally, effects of different structural parameters on the plateau stress and energy absorption of structures similar to concave hexagons were obtained during low impact. The potential collision between the ship and the pipe piles of the jacket structure brings huge risks to the safety of an offshore platform. Due to their high energy-absorbing capacity, honeycomb structures have been widely used as impact protectors in various engineering applications. This paper proposes a data-driven intelligent approach for the prediction of the collision response of honeycomb-reinforced structures under ship collision. In the proposed model, the artificial neural network (ANN) is combined with the dynamic particle swarm optimization (DPSO) algorithm to predict the collision responses of honeycomb reinforced pipe piles, including the maximum collision depth (δmax) and maximum absorption energy (Emax). Furthermore, a data-driven evaluation method, known as grey relational analysis (GRA), is proposed to evaluate the collision responses of the honeycomb-reinforced pipe piles of offshore platforms. Results of the case study demonstrate the accuracy of the DPSO-BP-ANN model, with measured mean-square-error (MSE) of 5.06 × 10−4 and 4.35 × 10−3 and R2 of 0.9906 and 0.9963 for δmax and Emax, respectively. It is shown that the GRA method can provide a comprehensive evaluation of the performance of a honeycomb structure under impact loads. The applications of sensors in the aerospace industry are mostly concentrated in the middle and high frequencies, and low-frequency sensors often face the problems of low power and short working bandwidth. A lightweight, thin, high-power, low-frequency broadband transducer based on giant magnetostrictive material is designed. The design and optimization processes of the core components are introduced and analyzed emphatically. The finite element simulation results are validated by the PSV-100 laser vibration meter. Three basic configurations of the work panel are proposed, and the optimal configuration is determined by modal, acoustic, and vibration coupling analyses. Compared with the original configuration, it is found that the lowest resonant frequency of the optimal configuration is reduced by 24.6% and the highest resonant frequency within 2000 Hz is 1744.9 Hz, which is 54.2% higher than that of the original configuration. This greatly improves the vibration power and operating frequency range of the transducer. Then, the honeycomb structure is innovatively applied to the work panel, and it is verified that the honeycomb structure has a great effect on the vibration performance of the work panel. By optimizing the size of the honeycomb structure, it is determined that the honeycomb structure can improve the vibration power of the work panel to its maximum value when the distance between the half-opposite sides of the hexagon is H = 3.5 mm. It can reduce the resonant frequency of the work panel; the lowest resonant frequency is reduced by 12.8%. This paper presents a combined experimental and numerical investigation on a novel liner concept for enhanced low-frequency and broadband acoustic attenuation. In particular, two different realizations, derived from conventional Helmholtz resonators (HR) and plate resonators (PR) are investigated, which both deploy flexible materials with material inherent damping. In this context, a comprehensive experimental investigation was carried out focusing the identification and evaluation of various geometric parameters and material properties on the acoustics dissipation and related properties of various materials in a simplified setup of a single Helmholtz resonator with flexible walls (FHR concept). Furthermore, a parameter study based on analytical models was performed for both liner concepts, taking into account material as well as geometric parameters and their effects on transmission loss. In addition, design concepts that enable cylindrical or otherwise curved liner structures and the corresponding manufacturing technologies are presented, while considering essential structural features such as drainage. With respect to the potential application in jet engines, a structural–mechanical analysis considering the relevant load cases to compare and discuss the mechanical performance of a classical HR and the FHR concept liner is presented. The effective thermal conductivity (ETC) is a critical parameter for simulating macroscopic heat transfer processes in composite materials, which estimation is particularly critical where the thermal conductivity of the composite phases is completely different. The huge difference in thermal conductivity of the composite phases makes their volume fraction modulation a classical way to reach the desired thermal conductivity. Nevertheless, the typical manufacturing process of honeycomb cellular structures allows various degrees of stretching of the structure, leading to various honeycomb geometries. In these 'real' structures some of the honeycomb wall sides are twice as thick as other parts, modifying the symmetry of the system with respect to honeycomb with uniform wall side thickness. A noticeable example of these composites is that of a hexagonal metallic honeycomb structure filled with phase change material (PCM) which is a widely utilized material in the field of thermal storage and thermal management by exploiting the heat absorbed/released by the PCM phase during its melting/solidification. While the thermal response of a PCM composite during a thermal cycle is not only defined by thermal conductivity (but also by cell size), this represents the basis for the with the optimization of a system based on a composite PCM. For this reason, in this study, steady-state simulations of heat transfer in unit honeycomb cells in different directions perpendicular to the cell axis are conducted to quantify the impact of morphology on the thermal property of the different wall types within honeycomb structures. The results demonstrate that in both SHS and DHS, the porosity exhibiting maximum anisotropy of ETC decreases as the thermal conductivity ratio increases. Moreover, simple predictive models for calculating the ETC in all directions are proposed for each type of honeycomb, considering a wide range of porosity and thermal conductivity ratio, with a relative error limited to 2 %. High temperatures can significantly diminish the efficiency of solar photovoltaic panels, emphasizing the critical need for effective thermal management strategies. While the use of phase change material has shown promise in this regard, issues arise from non-uniform temperature distribution within the phase change material, limiting its overall effectiveness. This paper introduces an innovative solution by incorporating a novel honeycomb-like aluminum structure into the phase change material tank, aiming to address these challenges. Numerical investigations explore various configurations involving different phase change material volumes and aluminum honeycomb grid thicknesses. The honeycomb structure proves effective in preventing the formation of a single high-temperature melting pool, ensuring a more uniform distribution of melting zones throughout the phase change material. Compared to scenarios without the honeycomb structure, the proposed design achieves an additional 10 °C reduction in photovoltaic cell temperature, translating to a noteworthy 0.57% improvement in panel efficiency. This enhancement is particularly significant given the baseline low efficiency of the photovoltaic panel, which stands at 14.7%. Furthermore, the study reveals that increasing the thickness of the aluminum grid contributes to enhanced temperature uniformity, reducing the maximum temperature by up to 4 °C. Due to their superior structural and mechanical properties, materials with negative Poisson's ratio are of increasing interest to research scholars, especially in fuel-efficient vehicles. In this work, a new concave I-shaped honeycomb structure is established by integrating the re-entrant hexagon and the I-shaped beam structure, and its negative Poisson's ratio characteristics and energy absorption properties are investigated. The effect of structural parameters on the energy absorption characteristics is analyzed using the finite element model. The results show that both the specific energy absorption and peak impact force decrease with the increase in cellular length and vertical short cellular height, and increase with the increase in horizontal short cellular length and cellular thickness. To obtain a smaller peak impact force and larger specific energy absorption with smaller mass, the four cell sizes were optimized by using Latin hypercube sampling, Gaussian radial basis function, and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II). Compared with the original design, the SEA increased by 44.175%, and the PCF increased by 25.857%. Meanwhile, the mass decreased by 31.140%. Hence, the optimal structure has better crashworthiness. A flexible and efficient resistive sheet boundary condition (RSBC)-based hybrid finite element-boundary integral-multilevel fast multipole algorithm (FE-BI-MLFMA) is presented for computing electromagnetic scattering from inhomogeneous objects with microwave-absorbing honeycomb structures. In the proposed algorithm, each nonmagnetic and high lossy material coated unit cell wall of the honeycomb is first approximated by the multilayered RSBC as a zero-thickness resistive sheet to eliminate the computational burden due to the extremely thin and multilayered characteristics of the coated unit cell wall. Then, the RSBC is incorporated into the FE-part of the FE-BI-MLFMA formulation. To further reduce the burden of meshing complicated objects involving cellular structures after RSBC approximation, the hybrid conformal and nonconformal domain decomposition method (DDM) of the FE-BI-MLFMA, which integrates the nonconformal Schwarz DDM-FE and the simplified discontinuous Galerkin (S-DG), is employed to bring significant flexibility and versatility in geometry modeling and mesh generating. An effective block low-rank multifrontal solver-based domain decomposition finite-element method (FEM)-absorbing boundary condition (ABC) preconditioner is constructed to speed up the solution of the FE-BI equations using locally approximated integral operators for the BI part. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the accuracy, capability, and performance of the proposed algorithm, including a high-definition complicated fighter model with antenna array, multilayer dielectric radome, and microwave-absorbing honeycomb structures. Metastructures are extensively used in aerospace engineering. In the present work, a high-strength structure was designed based on a reentrant hexagonal honeycomb (RHH) by topology optimization. To generate a negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) effect, topologically optimized cells were alternately arranged with RHH cells to obtain a hybrid hexagonal honeycomb (HHH). In comparison with other NPR structures, this structure had superior energy absorption characteristics. In addition, the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of this structure were analyzed. Finally, single, double, and triple functional gradients were introduced into the HHH. It was found that the introduction of functional gradients improved the energy absorption capacity of the structure, and that the energy absorption capacity increased with the increase in the number of functional gradients. Novel designs of paper-based bandstop frequency-selective surfaces (FSSs) are presented in this article. The characteristics of the paper-based honeycomb structure are investigated first. One folded dipole resonator with first-order bandstop response is analyzed and further printed on the sidewalls of the honeycomb structure accordingly. A second-order response with two cascade FSSs is proposed with controllable bandwidth by the coupling coefficient of the resonators with the aid of the equivalent circuit model. Two paper-based FSS samples were fabricated and measured to demonstrate the validity of the proposed design strategies. Benefiting from the merits of lightweight and strong mechanical properties, the proposed paper-based FSS is a potential candidate for application in radar systems and aircraft. This work aims to develop a light symmetrical structure that can be realized through rapid prototyping techniques. The structure must meet some restrictions imposed by possible practical applications. It must withstand a moderate load, be able to adapt to a specific external shape, be relatively light, allow the execution of some changes according to user requirements, allow execution with the help of owned equipment, and allow relatively fast production (its structure and form). The major application for which the structure is designed is that of an exoskeleton for medical rehabilitation, realized by the authors. The creation of such an exoskeleton is followed by a series of research regarding different aspects of acceptability, reliability, ease of use, and the shortcomings that such a structure can cause. Because of favorable mechanical properties, deformation resistance and being conducive to environmental protection, honeycomb fabricated plastic pavement slabs are highly recommended these years. At present, most studies focus on the performance of plastic materials, however, the dimension optimization of fabricated plastic pavement slab is rarely mentioned. In this paper, an optimized geometry of the honeycomb pavement slab was determined through finite element analysis. Mechanical response of honeycomb slabs with different internal dimensions and external dimensions were explored. Several dimension factors were taken into consideration including the side length, rib thickness, the thickness of both top and bottom slabs of honeycomb structure and the length, the width and the thickness of the fabricated plastic slab. The results showed that honeycomb pavement slab with 6 cm bottom slab, 12 cm top slab,18 cm side length and 6 cm rib thickness is recommended, additionally, an external dimension of 4 m × 4 m × 0.45 m is suggested. Then, the mechanical responses of this optimized fabricated plastic slab were further investigated. Significance of different influencing factors, including wheel load, elastic modulus of plastic material, base layer thickness, soil foundation modulus and base layer modulus were ranked. High current density electrochemical machining (ECM) and high temperature corrosion behavior of nickel-based alloys have been well researched, but these works cannot provide reference for precision removal and refurbishment of Haynes 214 honeycomb structure carried out at ambient temperature. Thus, we propose micron-scale removal of the Haynes 214 structure by using the low current density ECM technique at ambient temperature and have systematically investigated the electrochemical dissolution behavior of Haynes 214 alloy under such process conditions. Compared with the NaCl solution, the NaNO3 solution is a preferred electrolyte for electrochemical machining of Haynes 214 due to its good electro-dissolution stability. For Haynes 214 machined in NaNO3 solutions, a low dissolution resistance can be obtained at the concentration of 7 wt.% and temperature of 40 °C, and in a current density range of 0.1~0.5 A·cm−2, a material removal rate at the micron scale (1.5~7.5 μm·min−1) is maintained. The breakdown of passive films on the Haynes 214 surface occurs preferentially at grain boundaries. Continuous Al enrichment is found throughout the polarization process. In the transpassive region, a large number of γ' particles are exposed on the Haynes 214 surface due to the preferential dissolution of γ matrix. The corrosion products identified by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are composed of Ni(OH)2, Cr2O3, Cr(OH)3, Al2O3, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4. This study provides an experimental and theoretical basis for the electrochemical machining of Haynes 214 alloy. • Three kinds of honeycomb structures were printed using carbon fiber reinforced composites, and the tensile mechanical properties of honeycomb structures were studied by combining experimental and simulation analysis methods. Finally, the relationship between fracture toughness and fractal dimension of tensile fracture surface is analyzed by fractal theory. The study employed chopped fiber-reinforced nylon composite, referred to as "Onyx," along with continuous carbon fiber materials. The aim of this work is the preparation and characterization of modified mesoporous silica NH 2 -MCM-41 (NM-41) nanoparticles (NPs) in comparison to MCM-41 (M−41) with the aim of obtaining a pH-sensitive system for controlled drug release (CDR) applicable in cancer treatment. Three drugs were used for CDR studies including Adriamycin, Metformin and Naproxen, and loaded onto the mesoporous silica. The samples were prepared and analyzed by solid characterization methods including FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, and DSC analyses. The SEM images clearly showed the increase in surface porosity of NM-41 nanocarriers (NCs) compared to M−41 NCs. The CDR behavior of the obtained NCs was investigated at pH 1.5–3.5 (simulated gastric fluid media-SGF), pH 6 (simulated intestine fluid media-SIF) and pH 7.35–7.45 (simulated body fluid media-SBF). The results showed that the performance of modified NM-41 NPs improved compared to M−41, and the performance of modified NM-41 NPs at SIF and SBF pHs is much higher than SGF, which shows the success in the preparation of drug pH-sensitive NCs for CDR. The results of drug loading showed that the amount of Adriamycin, Metformin and Naproxen drugs in modified NM-41 NPs is significantly higher than M−41. A challenge for developing acoustic metamaterials (AMMs) is considering the application of broadband muffling and load bearing capacity simultaneously. In this paper, a honeycomb based graded AMM muffler is proposed, which can widen the attenuation band and improve the structural stiffness without any external device by means of integrated design. Firstly, the acoustic and mechanical characteristics of the muffler unit cell are theoretically and numerically studied, and the graded muffler is designed based on these characteristics. The numerical results show that the graded muffler widens the attenuation bandwidth of the unit cell, and the simulation also shows that the graded muffler has greater stiffness than the uniform one. The milling of aluminum honeycomb structures represents today an important scientific and technical research topic for many industrial applications: aerospace, aeronautic, automotive, and naval. The difficulties encountered when milling this type of materials are linked to the small thickness of the walls constituting the honeycomb cells and the ductility of the material structure. The milling of cellular composite structures requires specific and rigorous tools. In the present work, a 3D numerical modeling of the milling process of aluminum honeycombs has been developed using Abaqus Explicit software. The effect of milling parameters, such as the spindle speed, the tilt angle, and the depth of cut, has been particularly investigated in terms of cutting forces, surface integrity, and chip morphology. To properly analyze and optimize the cutting process, experimental validation was done through milling tests with different cutting conditions. Machining of Nomex® honeycomb materials is the biggest challenge in industry because of the complex forms and geometry of the honeycomb structure. The latter is characterized by a low density with orthotropic mechanical behavior. The thin walls of the composite structure make the shaping of this material very difficult. Studying interactions between the cutting tool and material, cutting forces, and chip formation allow to understand the machining process of Nomex® honeycomb. This paper presents 3D numerical modeling of machining Nomex® honeycomb using different orthotropic approaches and failure criteria: (i) monolayer isotropic approach, (ii) monolayer orthotropic approach with Tsai-Wu failure criteria, and (iii) monolayer orthotropic approach with Hashin failure criteria. A comparison between experiments and numerical cutting forces was performed to validate the proposed model. Space is one of the most avant-garde sectors for additive manufacturing as the inherent characteristics of this technology allow the creation of complex and lightweight 3D structures. Using this brand-new design tool, it was possible to design the pumping system holder of the MicroMED instrument, a particle analyser developed for ExoMars 2022 mission. The geometry of the holder was optimized using a finite element approach. The effectiveness of the proposed solution was evaluated by comparing the performance of two different designs using the AlSi9Cu3 alloy. One solution was based on micro-milling and the other on Selective Laser Melting. The battery-pack system of electric vehicles is prone to collide with low obstacles on the road, causing battery short circuits and even explosions. It poses a great safety threat to passengers and drivers. The honeycomb structure's high energy absorption and lightweight properties have made it a popular choice in the automotive industry. This paper designs different bio-inspired honeycomb structures to a battery-pack system of electric vehicles to improve the crashworthiness performance. The effects of different bio-inspired honeycomb structures on the crashworthiness of a battery-pack system during frontal impact are analyzed based on a nonlinear finite element model. First, the geometric parameters of seven different bio-inspired honeycomb individual units are described. The overall structure of the honeycomb is applied to a battery-pack system. Second, the nonlinear finite element model of a battery-pack system and honeycomb structures are established and verified. Then, collision simulations are conducted. The deformation and the maximum stress of a battery-pack's bottom shell are computed. The energy absorbed by the honeycomb structures during frontal impact are investigated. The results indicate that the proposed bio-inspired honeycomb structure mimicking grass stems improves the safety performance of battery-pack systems most. Finally, a parametric design is carried out on the bio-inspired honeycomb structure. The effects of wall thicknesses and the number of replacement hexagons on the crashworthiness performance are analyzed. The honeycomb structure preforms best when thickness is 1 mm and the number of replacement hexagons is 2 and 4. Here, we report honeycomb-structured coatings simultaneously with high transparency, abrasion-resistance and superhydrophobicity by fabrication of honeycomb epoxy resin structure via PDMS template method and subsequent spraying of hydrophobic SiO 2 nanoparticles. The coatings with different honeycomb structures exhibit average transmittance of 90.0 %, and the haze in the range of 8.9–54.1 %. Both the honeycomb structure formed by hard epoxy resin and strong adhesion of hydrophobic SiO 2 nanoparticles enable the coatings to maintain superhydrophobicity after harsh mechanical abrasion and weathering. The natural beesʼ honeycombs maintain long-term structural stability in harsh environments, employing a highly material-efficient approach. However, the reasons remain somewhat ambiguous. To clarify the stabilization mechanism and investigate quasi-static compression responses of double-layer ordered cellular structures, honeycomb, Tóth and single-layer cellular structures with a relative density (ρ r) of 25.84 % were fabricated using 3D printing technology. Then, quasi-static compression experiments in three directions were conducted. Further, a numerical study was conducted to uncover the stabilization mechanism and effect of ρ r on compressive behaviors. Results revealed that the stabilization mechanism was mainly attributed to bearing load priority of intermediate layer and its inhibition on formation of plastic hinges. A relative density of 5.17 % served as a transition point for deformation mode, beyond which honeycomb and Tóth structures exhibited stronger in-plane compressive strength at expense of less sacrificed out-of-plane compressive strength, below which they both exhibited more stable compressive curves compared to single-layer cellular structures, which were favorable for energy absorption. This study clarifies the stability mechanism of beesʼ honeycombs and addresses the lack on compression behaviors of double-layer ordered cellular structures. Hydrogen production from biomass is an efficient and clean utilization way for renewable energy to significantly alleviate the energy crisis. In order to improve the biomass conversion efficiency, a device combining honeycomb structure wood and inert porous pellets was proposed, and the combustion characteristics of honeycomb wood was studied with different biomass species and pore structures. The results indicated that softwood had the higher syngas yield compared with hardwood, and the hydrogen yield was up to 9.0 %. The increasing of inlet air velocity improved combustion temperature, but it was not conducive to syngas production. In addition, circle shape structure showed the stable combustion rate and the high conversion efficiency due to the uniform pore distribution. With the increasing of pore number, outlet temperature and hydrogen production increased first and then decreased. Moreover, syngas yield improved as the pore diameter increased and the maximum hydrogen growth rate reached 256 %. Meanwhile, the co-combustion mechanism of honeycomb wood and inert pellets was revealed, and the efficient realization of heat-hydrogen coproduction had practical guiding significance for optimizing the energy structure. A pixelization method of FE model was proposed to separate the complete cell structure from the honeycomb FE grid data and convert it into a matching pixel map. FE data was structuralized while reducing the large amount of computational power consumed in identifying complex array structures. Unsupervised automatic extraction of low-dimensional features of pixel maps was performed using a convolutional denoising autoencoder (CDAE). The crushing velocity and the extracted latent features were used as the input of the long-short term memory (LSTM) network to predict the crushing deformation and stress-strain curve of the honeycomb structure under different dynamic loading. Results showed that the constructed ML model could describe the dynamic crushing response behavior. Compared with the traditional FE method, the prediction model was 4.45 × 103 and 1.05 × 103 times faster in predicting the stress-strain and structural deformation response, respectively. The mechanical response prediction model provided a method for rapidly evaluating the dynamic mechanical response behavior of similar periodic array structures using FE model data, which could be beneficial for the design and development of equipment based on bionic structures. In this study, glue-pressed engineered honeycomb bamboo (GPEHB) was prepared, and the dependence of the compressive properties of the produced GPEHB on the load–slenderness ratio, longitudinal strain–slenderness ratio, and ultimate strain–slenderness ratio was examined. The detailed failure modes were also investigated. The main failure modes of the short GPEHB specimens were squashing, crushing, and splitting, and the bearing capacity was mainly dependent on the compressive strength of the bamboo units. Buckling failure modes involving significant lateral deflection were observed for the long GPEHB specimens. With increasing slenderness ratio, the bearing capacities of the GPEHB specimens decreased significantly. The ultimate load of the GPEHB specimens decreased significantly as the slenderness ratio increased from 4 to 6 (GPEHB length increased from 736 to 1,104 mm). The ultimate deformation behaviors of the specimens were fit well by a quadratic function of the slenderness ratio. The GPEHB was also analyzed and modeled via finite element analysis (FEA). Highly porous aluminum alloys and honeycomb structures may be utilized as single-use shock absorbers in landing gear and other elements of spacecraft thus ensuring safety of the landing process. This paper presents the results of studies that make it possible to estimate mechanical properties and shock-absorbing characteristics of highly porous aluminum alloys and honeycomb aluminum alloy structures, the initial average densities of said alloys and structures ranging from 330 to 2250 kg/m³. We list analogs that correspond with different stages found on stress-strain curves of highly porous aluminum alloys and honeycomb structures. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in adult serum often appears in early liver cancer. Therefore, early detection of an abnormal elevation of AFP concentration is important for the early diagnosis and treatment of primary liver cancer. In this work, a photoelectrochemical (PEC) electrode was fabricated for AFP-sensitive detection based on a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) honeycomb structure. After layer-by-layer bioconjugation, the immunoassay graphene electrode was modified with anti-AFP antibodies (Ab). Meanwhile, polymer nanoparticles (PFBT dots) were prepared via a nanoprecipitation method. In addition, the AFP was modified by using the PFBT dots and glucose oxidase (GOD), which formed a fluorescent probe (AFP-PFBT-GOD). By the competitive linkage of AFP and AFP-PFBT-GOD onto the anti-AFP modified honeycomb structure electrode, an immunosensor for AFP detection was obtained. During the PEC test, the electrons produced by the catalytic reaction of glucose and GOD can scavenge the photogenerated holes on the PFBT dots, which can reduce the recombination of photogenerated holes and electrons on the PFBT dots. The PEC immunosensor based on a rGO honeycomb structure exhibited a linear detection range of 0.05–100 ng/mL with a detection limit of 0.05 ng/mL. Aluminum honeycomb has been used widely on the spacecraft, as it has high strength mass ratio and good designability. In order to reduce the channel effect of honeycomb core, the multiple "Y" structures are proposed as the stuffing of the sandwich structure and the bracing structure of fabric layer respectively, and the compression tests are finished. The congregating effect of the "Y" structures on the debris cloud is validated by the hypervelocity impact test. The projectile diameter is 5 mm, and the impact velocities range from 3.9 km/s to 4.3 km/s. According to the test results, the "Y" structures adhered on the plate have certain stability and could play the bracing role, and they can reduce even eliminate the congregating effect on the debris cloud, however, their yield strength is lower compared with the aluminum honeycomb structure of equivalent areal density, which could be solved by structure optimum. To avoid agglomeration of ultrafine diamond particles and to improve machining precision of silicon (Si) wafers, a combination of gel casting and pore-forming agent is introduced to fabricate vitrified-bonded ultrafine diamond grinding wheel with ultrahigh porosity (~75%), honeycomb structure, and homogeneous microstructure. Moreover, the as-prepared grinding wheel possesses uniformly distributed closed pores, which are highly desirable for chip removal, heat dissipation and extended service life. In addition, influences of sintering schedules on microstructure, porosity and bending strength of the as-prepared grinding wheel are systematically investigated. Because of the honeycomb structure, the as-fabricated grinding wheel renders superior self-sharpness, which is required for continuous grinding of Si wafers without dressing, and this subsequently enhances the working efficiency. Results reveal that the surface roughness and damaged layer of the ground Si wafers are approximately 5.0 nm and 0.21 μm, respectively. Mathematical analysis on electromagnetic waves in photonic graphene, a photonic topological material which has a honeycomb structure, is one of the most important current research topics. By modulating the honeycomb structure, numerous topological phenomena have been observed recently. The electromagnetic waves in such media are generally described by the 2-dimensional wave equation. It has been shown that the corresponding elliptic operator with a honeycomb material weight has Dirac points in its dispersion surfaces. In this paper, we study the time evolution of the wave packets spectrally concentrated at such Dirac points in a modulated honeycomb material weight. We prove that such wave packet dynamics is governed by the Dirac equation with a varying mass in a large but finite time. Honeycomb structures exhibit outstanding mechanical properties with specific unit cell configurations. We introduce a novel honeycomb structure that can enhance the compression property and energy absorption capacity by utilizing four-dimensional (4D) printing technology with polylactic acid (PLA) materials. In the designed honeycomb structure, the walls of the adjacent unit cells are independent, and the shape of the unit cells can be transformed between a hexagon and triangle under external loading and temperature stimulus. 4D printing technology is employed to prepare the honeycomb specimens, and the deformation processes of the innovative honeycombs are implemented. Structure I (a novel hexagonal honeycomb structure) and Structure II (a semi-triangular honeycomb structure) can be transformed into each other. Uniaxial quasi-static compression and impact tests are conducted to investigate the compression property and energy absorption capacity of the designed honeycomb structures. The results indicate that the novel honeycomb had a high compression property with Structure II, and had high energy absorption capacity with Structure I; thus, the developed honeycomb structures have broad application prospects for the multifunctional applications of honeycomb structures in the future. • A novel strategy was provided for preparing EM wave absorbing materials. • Oblique honeycomb Al 2 O 3 /SiCw structure was designed and synthesized. • 3D-printed designable structure can effectively affect EM wave absorption. For electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials, combining microstructure design with macrostructure design is considered as an effective means to adjust EMW absorption performance. Undoubtedly, the great advantages of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology in structural design and accurate molding provide a convenient and feasible research scheme for the adjustment of EMW absorption performance. In this study, a method combined 3D printing technology with direct chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) has been adopted to fabricate Al 2 O 3 /SiC whisker (SiCw) honeycomb composites. The porous oblique honeycomb structures with well-designed angle (30°, 45°, 60° and 75°) and micron-scale SiCw effectively improved impedance match, inner scattering and dielectric loss, which resulted in the realization of the optimized wave absorbing composites. Specially, Al 2 O 3 /SiCw composite with the angle of 30° shows a minimum reflection coefficient (RC min) value of −63.65 dB (99.9999%) absorption at 9.8 GHz with a thickness of 3.5 mm while the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) ranges from 8.2 to 12.4 GHz, covering the whole X band. Besides, the EMW absorption mechanism for 3D printed Al 2 O 3 /SiCw composite is also discussed.
