Software development stands out as one of the most rapidly expanding markets due to its pivotal role in crafting applications across diverse sectors like healthcare, transportation, and finance. Nevertheless, the sphere of cybersecurity has also undergone substantial growth, underscoring the escalating significance of software security. Despite the existence of different secure development frameworks, the persistence of vulnerabilities or software errors remains, providing potential exploitation opportunities for malicious actors. One pivotal contributor to subpar security quality within software lies in the neglect of cybersecurity requirements during the initial phases of software development. In this context, the focal aim of this study is to analyze the importance of integrating security modeling by software developers into the elicitation processes facilitated through the utilization of abuse stories. To this end, the study endeavors to introduce a comprehensive and generic model for a secure software development process. This model inherently encompasses critical elements such as new technologies, human factors, and the management of security for the formulation of abuse stories and their integration within Agile methodological processes. By adopting agile and lean practices, DevOps aims to achieve rapid value delivery by speeding up development and deployment cycles, which however lead to more security concerns that cannot be fully addressed by an isolated security role only in the final stage of development. DevSecOps promotes security as a shared responsibility integrated into the DevOps process that seamlessly intertwines development, operations, and security from the start throughout to the end of cycles. While some companies have already begun to embrace this new strategy, both industry and academia are still seeking a common understanding of the DevSecOps movement. The goal of this study is to report the state‐of‐the‐practice of DevSecOps, including the impact of DevOps on security, practitioners' understanding of DevSecOps, and the practices associated with DevSecOps as well as the challenges of implementing DevSecOps. The authors used a mixed‐methods approach for this research. The authors carried out a grey literature review on DevSecOps, and surveyed the practitioners of DevSecOps in industry of China. The status quo of DevSecOps in industry is summarized. Three major software security risks are identified with DevOps, where the establishment of DevOps pipeline provides opportunities for security‐related activities. The authors classify the interpretations of DevSecOps into three core aspects of DevSecOps capabilities, cultural enablers, and technological enablers. To materialise the interpretations into daily software production activities, the recommended DevSecOps practices from three perspectives—people, process, and technology. Although a preliminary consensus is that DevSecOps is regarded as an extension of DevOps, there is a debate on whether DevSecOps is a superfluous term. While DevSecOps is attracting an increasing attention by industry, it is still in its infancy and more effort needs to be invested to promote it in both research and industry communities. Software development must be based on more than just the experience and capabilities of your programmers and your team. The importance of obtaining a quality product lies in the risks that can be exploited by software vulnerabilities, which can jeopardize organizational assets, consumer confidence, operations, and a broad spectrum of applications. Several methods, techniques, and models have been suggested and developed to address software security. However, only a few have solid evidence for creating secure software applications. The main objective of this paper is to survey the literature for methods or models suitable for considering the integration of security in all or some of the phases of the software development life cycle and which ones are most considered or neglected. This study represents the beginning of research to generate a methodology that integrates security practices in agile software development, allowing inexperienced developers to create more secure applications. Scrum is one of the most popular and efficient agile development methods. However, like other agile methods such as Extreme Programming (XP), Feature Driven Development (FDD), and the Dynamic Systems Development Method (DSDM), Scrum has been criticized because of lack of support to develop secure software. Thus, in 2011, we published research proposing the idea of a security backlog (SB). This paper represents the continuation of our previous research, with a focus on the evaluation in industry-based case study. Our findings highlight an improved agility in Scrum after the integration of SB. Furthermore, secure software can be developed quickly, even in situations involving requirement changes of software. Based on our experimental findings, we noticed that, when integrating SB, it is quite feasible to develop secure software using an agile Scrum model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
