The construction of sub‐daily pressure series is described for the cities of London (GB) and Paris (FR). The series extend back 1692 and 1748, respectively, and as such they represent two of the longest sub‐daily series of barometric pressure available. These series are updated from the previously documented London and Paris daily series and offer more homogeneous series, and in the case of the London series a more temporally complete sequence of data. A pairwise homogenization procedure has been applied to the two series alongside the long series of pressure that exists for De Bilt (NL). The De Bilt series has been available for some time in the International Surface Pressure Dataset (ISPD), but further quality control and homogeneity‐checking procedures have been applied to the data in this paper and therefore the three series are released together in this dataset. The series are of immediate interest for understanding changes to storm activity across the English Channel and North Atlantic region over an extended timeframe but may also be assimilated into reanalysis datasets such as the 20th‐century reanalysis. Queer refugees are misfits in the global political economy of migration. While international human rights law has provided some room for queer acceptance, queer refugees face organised abandonment—marginality, erasure, and invisibility—as they attempt to survive in the face of ongoing displacement. This paper explores queer refugee survival in Nairobi, Cape Town, and Paris, and examines the netted practices of the state, non‐state actors, and civil society embedded in a landscape of heteronormativity and anti‐migrant sentiment. In so doing, this paper emphasises queerness as a form of precarity inseparable from the overarching violence of race, class, and capital. With this critique in mind, queer refugee survival is constrained by the lack of access to shelter, community, and work‐related social reproduction. In short, queer refugees face deeper marginality than their cis‐gendered and heterosexual counterparts as they attempt to survive in the city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Musée du Quai Branly Jacques Chirac (MQBJC) in Paris includes a commissioned ceiling mural by Australian artist John Mawurndjul. Neither the identity of the artist nor the cultural meaning of the work features strongly as part of the visitor experience for this work. Such interpretation is, in general, pushed to the margins in the museum's permanent exhibits. Paradoxically, the temporary exhibits are treated differently. The paper details how the power of John Mawurndjul's art is developed in relation to social activities on his own country as well as his cross‐cultural engagements with the broader art world. Cultural meaning and strong principles of aesthetics are developed through this creativity. The paper presents these insights as interpretational possibilities for Mawurndjul's mural and questions whether an avowed museum of world arts can continue to ignore the development of a more cross‐cultural definition of aesthetics and a relational approach to develop and interpret its permanent exhibits. This paper explores the influence of spatial mobility on the risk of overeducation of French young workers. Mobilizing a survey following a cohort of young graduates entering the labour market from 2010 until 2013, our results reveal that interregional migration decreases the risk of (statistical and subjective) overeducation. We also evidence that migration to an economic centre (the Paris region) has an even stronger negative effect and that more educated workers benefit more from spatial mobility. Menispermaceae are an angiosperm family of mostly climbing plants distributed throughout tropical regions. The fruits in this family have a strong sclerified endocarp and can be used for reliable species‐level identifications, even in a fossilized form. New Paleocene‐age menispermaceous endocarps have recently been discovered in South America and Asia, while in Europe, they are mostly found in the Eocene. This paper focuses on the study of fossil endocarps belonging to Menispermaceae, found in the Petit‐Pâtis locality, which is one of the few Paleocene localities in Europe. The locality is dated to the late Paleocene (57–56 Ma) and the fossils represent flora and fauna in the Paris Basin before the onset of the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum. Lignitized fossils were photographed and their morphology was analyzed using computed tomography, scanning electron microscope, and geometric morphometric analysis. The analysis of 36 fossils belonging to Menispermaceae revealed that three genera (Stephania, Palaeosinomenium, Tinospora) were present in the late Paleocene of Paris Basin. Differences in internal morphology and a more inflated endocarp base led to a description of a new fossil species—Palaeosinomenium oisensis sp. nov. The occurrence of these genera in the Paleocene of France is consistent with the suggestion that megathermal flora was present in the Paris Basin before the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum. These three genera are currently the oldest occurrences in Europe, highlighting the connection between paleofloras of the Americas, Europe, and Asia in the Paleocene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The limited understanding of the fatigue behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete members is one of the reasons why many structures do not reach their expected service life. Without a deeper theoretical understanding of the fatigue phenomena in the various fatigue process zones, reliable fatigue life predictions are not possible. This paper provides a classification of the major fatigue process zones and mechanisms in reinforced and prestressed concrete members, accompanied by a brief review of recent developments in design rules, experimental characterization, and modeling approaches specific to each fatigue process zone and mechanism. Airport access mode disruptions, such as a subway shutdown, threaten the whole passenger door‐to‐door journey. When such a disruptive event occurs, knowledge of passengers' delays would help the airport operation centre to decide if a departure flight should be delayed. This paper proposes a tactical flight rescheduling at an airport to minimise the number of stranded passengers while considering operational constraints. An integer linear programming formulation of the problem is presented. Constraints such as terminal capacities, maximal runway throughput, minimum turnaround time or minimum transfer time for connecting passengers are considered. An exact and heuristic resolution is proposed and compared to a study case around Paris‐Charles de Gaulle airport. The new schedule satisfies the operational constraints and reduces up to 60% of the number of stranded passengers with moderate deviation from the initial planning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we examine how young adults who are consumers of K‐Pop in three culturally diverse cities (Paris, Philadelphia, and Manchester) reshape their symbolic boundaries to face social challenges. Analyzing data from 132 interviews, we show how young adults mainly confront social exclusion in Paris, fight racism in Philadelphia and deal with xenophobia in Manchester. Although K‐Pop adds to the dynamics of exclusion due to being perceived as culturally foreign, our participants use K‐Pop as a resource to reshape social boundaries towards new forms of inclusion. They do this by relying on K‐Pop as a cultural product that promotes inclusion, and on their affiliation with the K‐Pop community on a local and global level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to analyze COVID‐19 crisis management from the perspective of organizational resilience. An empirical study was conducted from April to June 2020 in one French hospital in Paris. The study focused on the organizational changes implied by the 'all COVID‐19 strategy', the success factors facilitating the organizational resilience, and the difficulty factors. We show that organizational resilience in this case was based on a link between the anticipation and adaptation processes. This capacity for resilience can also be organized using an original structure that connects strategic decisions with the reality on the ground, takes account of the demands and constraints of operational actors, and offers them the necessary support. The description and analysis of real work carried out by operational actors illustrates the contribution made by expertize to organizational resilience, and the social dynamics of the adaptation process. Finally, the emotional aspects, rarely featured in the literature, are highlighted as an intrinsic element of a crisis. Exploiting a French living condition survey from 2008 to 2015, this paper documents the main determinants of self‐declared minimum income necessary to achieve decent living. Declared minimum income is strongly related to actual income. Isolating this relationship, it is possible to highlight the other determinants: family composition, housing tenure, socioprofessional status, region, and degree of urbanization. A sub‐national measure of purchasing power parity is then developed. From a macroeconomic point of view, it leads to lower Gini index and higher rate of poverty in PPP terms than in nominal terms. However, these changes are heterogeneous, with increased poverty concentration around Paris, Mediterranean coast, and in the North. It is worth noting that the North, the poorest region in nominal terms, presents relatively low price of housing but a relatively high cost of living. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a numerical tool, able to mimic the delamination growth under cyclic loading conditions, has been adopted to investigate the mode II interlaminar damage growth in composite laminates. An improved Virtual Crack Closure Technique based model, mesh and time step independent, has been combined with a Paris‐Law equations‐based model to account for the effects of cycling loading conditions on the structural behavior of a specimen under an End‐Notched Flexure (ENF) test. The ANSYS FEM environment has been adopted for the numerical simulations and the numerical model has been implemented in ANSYS by adopting the Ansys Parametric Design Language (APDL). Comparisons at the coupon level with literature experimental data on unidirectional ENF samples have demonstrated the ability of the numerical model to simulate the Mode II fatigue delamination growth. Actually, useful indications on the damage propagation under fatigue loading condition have been provided by the proposed numerical model in conjunction with the experimental data taken from literature. The decline in fertility has been the subject of much research, particularly on the countries that were the precursors of this historic decline. But, if research has focused on the mechanisms of the adoption of birth control, studies about the changes in fertility in cities are less frequent. To fill this gap, this article proposes to study Paris, the city where the lowest marital fertility levels were measured during the 19th century (Brée, 2017; 10.4000/lectures.22911). The objective of this paper is to understand the spread of this intensive birth control on an intraurban scale. This approach is original because there is almost no study that examines 19th century changes in fertility on an intraurban scale. We use spatial statistics and spatial panel modelling to consider both the incidence of birth control behaviour and the socio‐economic characteristics of the districts studied, and those of the neighbouring districts, to distinguish between adaptation and diffusion effects. These methods constitute another originality of the article insofar as this type of model remains very little used in historical demography. The results highlight important spatial disparities within Paris. We also show both the importance of the social composition on the level of fertility in the districts and the strong effect of the behaviours in the neighbouring districts in the fertility change. DH36 steel is a widely used material in marine engineering. The fatigue crack propagation rates of DH36 steel at low temperatures have a crucial influence on the fatigue strength of structures operating in polar environments. The objective of this paper is to investigate the fatigue crack propagation behaviour of DH36 steel at low temperatures (−60°C to 20°C) by carrying out tensile tests and fatigue crack propagation tests of DH36 steel, in order to obtain the fatigue crack propagation behaviour of DH36 steel. The influence of the elastic modulus on the crack length measured by the compliance method is considered. On the basis of the Paris law, the crack propagation rate at different temperatures is investigated. The results and the observed failure modes indicated that fatigue ductile‐to‐brittle transition (FDBT) occurred as the temperature was lowered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electrolysis is fundamental to meet the Paris agreement targets, as it serves as an energy storage technology, with hydrogen being a major energy vector to decarbonize the industry sector. In particular, proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis is well suited for coupling with renewables such as wind turbines and PV. The worldwide objectives for hydrogen ramping up are very ambitious and can only be satisfied with rapid and efficient production. This paper describes how the giga‐factory from Siemens Energy installed in Berlin will play a significant role in satisfying the rising demand of PEM stacks for the company. The drastic severe temperature cycle in an aero‐engine combustion chamber leads to large thermal fatigue stress, which may induce thermal fatigue failure of the combustion chamber. In this paper, thermal fatigue crack initiation and propagation behaviors of GH3230 nickel‐based superalloy sheet specimens with V‐notch were studied under different peak temperatures 800°C, 900°C, and 1,000°C using self‐built thermal fatigue equipment. The temperature, stress, and crack propagation driving force of the V‐notch specimen were discussed in detail. Results show that the thermal fatigue crack initiation life gradually decreases with the increase of the peak temperature. Oxidation caused by high temperature will weaken alloy's strength and accelerate its crack propagation. Higher peak temperature will make the crack propagate faster and the thermal deformation at V‐notch end easier to accumulate. At last, there is a good consistency between fitting curves from the modified Paris formula and the experiment results. In this paper, we explore how borders and associated processes – spatial othering and ordering – are reproduced, resisted and undermined temporally. To do so, we investigate ethnographically how 'welcomers' from volunteer pro‐refugee initiatives in Paris become involved in the chronopolitics of b/ordering. Our empirical analysis builds on the practice turn in border studies and on Sharma's chronography of power, which focuses on the relational dimension of temporal politics. We detail three temporal practices of Parisian welcome cultures: temporal translation, temporal creation and the elaboration of sub‐architectures of temporal maintenance. In detailing these practices ethnographically, we highlight the ambiguity of welcomers' role in the chronopolitics of b/ordering: aligning with and recalibrating refugees' bodies to the rhythmic and temporal logics of b/ordering as well as undermining the violence, binarity and rigidified identities underpinning b/ordering timelines. It is arguable that the most significant feature of the maiden Paris Convention is the creation of a remarkably broad national policy space which allowed Union members to balance the implementation of required obligations with the need to occasionally attend to national exigencies. Thus, a member may choose not to offer industrial property protection if national interests would be best served by doing so. While subsequent revisions to the Paris Convention chipped away at national flexibilities, the most strident attack to national flexibilities occurs under the Agreement for the Trade‐Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights and the period after it. This paper puts the almost‐unnoticed whittling down of national flexibilities in international patent agreements in historical perspective. The atmospheric concentration of CO2 is steadily increasing and causing climate change. To achieve the Paris 1.5 or 2°C target, negative emission technologies must be deployed in addition to reducing carbon emissions. The ocean is a large carbon sink but the potential of marine primary producers to contribute to carbon neutrality remains unclear.Here we review the alterations to carbon capture and sequestration of marine primary producers (including traditional 'blue carbon' plants, microalgae and macroalgae) in the Anthropocene, and, for the first time, assess and compare the potential of various marine primary producers to carbon neutrality and climate change mitigation via biogeoengineering approaches.The contributions of marine primary producers to carbon sequestration have been decreasing in the Anthropocene due to the decrease in biomass driven by direct anthropogenic activities and climate change. The potential of blue carbon plants (mangroves, saltmarshes and seagrasses) is limited by the available areas for their revegetation. Microalgae appear to have a large potential due to their ubiquity but how to enhance their carbon sequestration efficiency is very complex and uncertain. On the other hand, macroalgae can play an essential role in mitigating climate change through extensive offshore cultivation due to higher carbon sequestration capacity and substantial available areas. This approach seems both technically and economically feasible due to the development of offshore aquaculture and a well‐established market for macroalgal products.Synthesis and applications. This paper provides new insights and suggests promising directions for utilizing marine primary producers to achieve the Paris temperature target. We propose that macroalgae cultivation can play an essential role in attaining carbon neutrality and climate change mitigation, although its ecological impacts need to be assessed further. This paper evaluates the capabilities of the recently developed CF20 cohesive fatigue model, which can predict crack initiation as well as the rates of crack propagation by relying on intrinsic relationships between a stress‐life diagram and its corresponding Paris law. The model is validated here using a partially reinforced double cantilever beam (R‐DCB) benchmark proposed in literature. The two parameters needed for the CF20 cohesive fatigue model were obtained by performing preliminary analyses of a conventional DCB. The analysis results indicate that the CF20 cohesive fatigue model can accurately reproduce the complex evolution of the delamination observed in the R‐DCB. Highlights: A 3D benchmark is analyzed using the mixed‐mode CF20 cohesive fatigue formulation.The parameters of the model are obtained from experimental results of DCB specimens.The model predicts crack growth rate and delamination shape changes during propagation.A parametric study illustrates the precision needed to accurately predict the final delamination length. In 2012, the Oslo–Paris (OSPAR) Commission adopted Recommendation 2012/5 for a risk‐based approach (RBA) to the management of produced water discharges from offshore installations. As part of this recommendation, OSPAR requires that the environmental risk of the discharge of produced water is characterized based on whole effluent toxicity (WET) studies and/or on a substance‐based assessment. In this paper we describe an assessment of the likelihood that the environmental risk of produced water discharges is adequately controlled based on WET data for 19 oil‐ and gas‐producing platforms and their discharge volumes. Our analysis shows that, with the selected risk criterion of predicted exposure concentration (PEC)/predicted no‐effect concentration (PNEC) should not exceed 1 at 500 m, there is a mean likelihood of 99.5% (or more) that the environmental risk from the produced water discharges is adequately controlled for installations that discharge 30 × 103 m3/y (or less). The method presented in this paper can be used for screening purposes to ensure that efforts are directed toward installations with a high likelihood that risk is not adequately controlled. Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary-General (SG) has been visibly engaged throughout the year on preparations for and during the Paris Conference, but his role in contributing to achieving this agreement has been little understood. The SG has no specific mandate to deal with climate change issues. Yet without his intensive engagement it would not have been possible to reach the agreement we had in Paris. The role played by the SG and its outcomes will be the focus of this paper. Particular attention will be paid to events in 2015, but the paper also looks at some earlier events during the entire mandate of this Secretary-General, covering 2007-2016. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Steel structures are frequently exposed to high‐cycle loading in which fatigue cracks initiate and propagate in the service life. The development of crack(s) will affect the structural integrity. In extreme cases, e.g., earthquakes and impacts, structures may be overloaded in several cycles or even a single loading cycle with the development of significant plastic deformation and macro cracks. Service loads, e.g., traffic and waves, will afterwards still be experienced in these damaged structures. The aforementioned two types of deformation are currently analyzed using damage and fracture mechanics methods, respectively. The cycle‐by‐cycle calculation and jump strategy relying on the Paris' equation, are employed for the low (including monotonic) and high‐cycle problems, using elastoplastic and linear‐elastic materials, respectively. The two calculation methods were developed independently, which presents a challenge in analyzing overloaded high‐cycle fatigue problems. This paper presents and executes a hybrid analysis using damage and fracture mechanics models for the single‐edge notch bend specimen. Either linear‐elastic or elasto‐plastic materials is employed in finite element simulations. The hybrid analysis with the combination of damage and linear‐elastic fracture mechanics shows the potential of a promising solution for assessing the fatigue behaviour of steel structures experiencing extreme loading and associated stepwise material damage. High-pressure (>1 GPa) torsion apparatus can be coupled with in situ X-ray tomography (XRT) to study microstructures in materials associated with large shear strains. Here, deformation experiments were carried out on multi-phase aggregates at ∼3-5 GPa and ∼300-500°C, using a rotational tomography Paris-Edinburgh press (RoToPEc) with in situ absorption contrast XRT on the PSICHE beamline at Synchrotron SOLEIL. The actual shear strain reached in the samples was quantified with respect to the anvil twisting angles, which is γ ≤ 1 at 90° anvil twist and reaches γ ≃ 5 at 225° anvil twist. 2D and 3D quantifications based on XRT that can be used to study in situ the deformation microfabrics of two-phase aggregates at high shear strain are explored. The current limitations for investigation in real time of deformation microstructures using coupled synchrotron XRT with the RoToPEc are outlined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyzes the influence of transportation infrastructure, and in particular of the Regional Express Rail (RER), on employment and population growth in the Paris metropolitan area between 1968 and 2010. In order to make proper causal inference, we rely on historical instruments and control for all other transportation modes that could be complement or substitute to the RER. Our results show that proximity to an RER station increases employment and population density and, in particular, employment and population growth. The latter effects are higher in municipalities located near RER stations and close to employment (sub)centers. They are also found to be particularly strong for jobs in the service sector, for factory workers, and for highly educated population. We find no impact of the RER expansion on employment growth during the first part of the period, while the effect on population growth appears earlier but declines over time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A large‐eddy simulation tool is developed for simulating the dynamics of atmospheric boundary layers (ABLs) using lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), which is an alternative approach for computational fluid dynamics and proved to be very well suited for the simulation of low‐Mach flows. The equations of motion are coupled with the global complex physical models considering the coupling among several mechanisms, namely basic hydro‐thermodynamics and body forces related to stratification, Coriolis force, canopy effects, humidity transport, and condensation. Mass and momentum equations are recovered by an efficient streaming, collision, and forcing process within the framework of LBM while the governing equations of temperature, liquid, and vapor water fraction are solved using a finite volume method. The implementation of wall models for ABL, subgrid models, and interaction terms related to multiphysic phenomena (e.g., stratification, condensation) is described, implemented, and assessed in this study. An immersed boundary approach is used to handle flows in complex configurations, with application to flows in realistic urban areas. Applications to both wind engineering and atmospheric pollutant dispersion are illustrated. Plain Language Summary: We have described a new tool for large‐eddy simulation (LES) of atmospheric flows in this paper. LES with the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) was used to simulate dry and cloudy atmospheric boundary layers (ABLs), along with flows in complex urban areas. To validate our LBM‐LES solver, we first simulated the four basic ABL cases coming from the previous intercomparison of LES codes. These were the neutral, convective, stable, and cloudy convective boundary layers. Then three extra cases for ABL with canopy effects were performed by our solver. The altitude‐dependent drag force and heat release source term were introduced and assessed in the present solver compared reference data. At last, the ProLB tool was successfully assessed considering two urban flow configurations: wind prediction in Shinjuku district in Tokyo, and gaseous pollutant dispersion in the Champs Elysées district in Paris. In both cases, very satisfactory comparisons with experimental data were recovered. Rolled steel plates and sections are often applied in structures in such a way that the principal load direction corresponds with the rolling direction. Examples are beams, arches, or pylons of bridges, supporting beams of ship decks, and the main elements of crane structures. However, some types of structure are subjected to a multiaxial stress state or are loaded with the main load direction perpendicular to rolling. The orientation may influence the mechanical properties. This paper studies the influence of anisotropy observed in the microstructure of rolled C–Mn steels on the tensile properties, Charpy impact values and particularly the fatigue crack growth rates. The influence of anisotropy is determined through tests performed at different orientations with respect to the rolling direction, namely, L‐T, T‐L and T‐S orientations. Samples were taken from structures that were constructed between 25 and 50 years ago from steel grades Fe510C or St52.3 (modern equivalences S355J2 or S355N). The orientation appears to have a statistically relevant influence on Charpy impact value and fatigue crack growth rate. The anisotropy ratio, defined as the ratio between the mechanical property in a certain orientation with that of the L‐T orientation, ranged between 0.30 and 0.53 for Charpy impact values. The anisotropy ratios appear correlated with the absolute Charpy value, with a correlation coefficient of ρ = −0.8. The anisotropy ratios of the crack growth in T‐L and T‐S orientations were 1.19 and 0.43, respectively. Anisotropy ratios for crack growth appear uncorrelated with anisotropy ratios for Charpy impact. The observed anisotropy may partially explain the difference between uniaxial and multiaxial fatigue crack growth as determined by others. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines a series of English-language newspaper ventures produced in revolutionary France and largely aimed at export to Britain. These enterprises, chief among which was the Paris Mercury (1792), sought to profit from heightened British interest in French events by dispatching ready-printed newspapers directly from Paris, thus achieving news priority over the domestic British press. New French press freedoms also enabled claims to be made about the superior editorial qualities of such extraterritorial newspapers. This article reconstructs these newspapers' publication history, reviews their contents, discusses their commercial and political rationale and their precursors, and offers explanations for their failure. This paper presents a study on the effect of microstructure on the fatigue crack growth (FCG) rate in advanced S355 marine steels in the Paris Region of the da/dN versus ΔK log–log plot. The environments of study were air and seawater (SW), under constant amplitude sinewave fatigue loading. Fundamentally, three phenomena (crack tip diversion, crack front bifurcation and metal crumb formation) were observed to influence the rate of FCG. These phenomena appear to be a function of the material microstructure, environment and crack tip loading conditions. The three factors retarded the crack growth by reducing or redistributing the effective driving force at the main active crack tip. A crack path containing extensively the three phenomena was observed to offer strong resistance to FCG. In SW, the degree of the electrochemical dissolution of the microplastic zone appears to be an additional primary factor influencing FCG in the steels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to investigate the fatigue fracture behavior of three different adhesive systems (epoxy‐based, acrylic, and a rubber‐like adhesive). To achieve this, double cantilever beam specimens were manufactured with different adhesives and tested under several mode mixities and different load levels. Fatigue crack growth rate was evaluated through a Paris law equation. For postprocessing, the compliance‐based beam method was used. Results showed that the variation of the threshold energy with load level is more pronounced for the epoxy‐based adhesive. The crack propagation life is higher for the acrylic adhesive. Although, for pure mode I conditions, the normalized threshold of the rubber‐like adhesive is lower, for pure mode II, it was higher than the epoxy‐based adhesive. Due to the normalization by the static fracture energy, the slope of the Paris law was approximately constant for all the adhesive systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In discussing the lifestyle and practices of the Paris group of the contemporary surrealist movement, this paper contributes to debates within economic and political geography that seek to develop the imagining of alternatives to neoliberal globalisation through practices of resistance, and spaces of political and policy engagement. The everyday life of the surrealist movement, in combining creativity with progressive choices and radical economic practices that oppose capitalism, while intellectually investigating ideas of revolution, a different society and utopia, suggests a perspective that contributes to the imagining of such alternatives. This paper outlines the deeply embedded nature of surrealist activity in opposing capitalism and illustrates, as one member of the surrealist group suggests, in quoting Baudelaire, surrealism's insistence for a world in which“action is the sister of dream”. In this paper, fatigue life, crack growth trajectory, and stress intensity factors of top‐down and bottom‐up cracks have been investigated in a multilayered asphalt pavement using numerical method. Finite element models, Paris law, and maximum tangential stress criteria were used to determine the effects of vehicle position, thickness, and stiffness of layers on fatigue life of pavements. The results show that the minimum fatigue life of pavements with top‐down crack occurs when the wheels are symmetrically located relative to the crack plane. On the other side, in pavements with bottom‐up crack, it occurs when the front tire located on top of the crack. Moreover, the result reveals that the top‐down crack grows slower than bottom‐up crack. Also, the surface layer's stiffness has the most effect on fatigue life of pavement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The experimental study of fatigue crack growth (FCG) behavior in Ti6Al4V alloy manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM) was carried out on an in situ fatigue testing machine. Two specimen orientations relative to the build direction (horizontal and vertical), two temperatures (room temperature, RT, and 400°C), and two stress ratios (0.1 and 0.5) were considered, and the FCG curves with the threshold values were determined. The results showed that the FCG properties were affected by the stress ratio due to different degree of crack closure and temperature with grain softening at 400°C in threshold and Paris region. The threshold value is highly dependent on the build direction of the alloy, which was caused by the anisotropic microstructure, while in the Paris region, the effect of material direction can be negligible and FCG rate tends to be consistent. The fracture mechanism at different stages was discussed and revealed by the fracture morphology observation using scanning electron microscopy. This study investigates natural hydrogen (H2) occurrences in the Paris Basin, using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to analyze an extensive, yet underexploited, database that contains historic drilling records. The potential of natural hydrogen has been largely unexplored in conventional oil and gas wells. Utilizing the in‐house CVAGeoDB database based on public well data, which includes well logs, mudlogs, and End Drilling Reports (EDRs) in PDF image format, we applied the Tesseract‐OCR Engine to convert these documents into searchable formats for efficient data analysis. Our analysis revealed several H2‐bearing wells across French sedimentary basins. The hydrogen occurrences in the Aquitaine Basin may be explained by the geological context and in particular the presence of a mantle body at shallow depth. On the contrary, the detection of H2 in the Paris Basin cannot be explained in a straightforward manner as the presence of ultramafic or U‐rich rocks is poorly documented so far. In the Paris Basin, H2 has been detected in four main formations: the Lusitanian, the Dogger, and Triassic aquifers as well as in the basement. The highest hydrogen concentration (52 vol%) was measured in the Dogger aquifer. These wells are primarily located along the Bray Fault, indicating at least a structural influence on H2 distribution. Finaly, the presence of serpentinzed dunite from the Lizard complex associated with the bedrock may have played the role as a source for H2. This research demonstrates the effectiveness of OCR in reassessing historical drilling data for natural hydrogen exploration, highlighting the need for comprehensive exploration methodologies in this emerging field. The Paris Basin, exhibits unexpected H2 occurrences not directly linked to anticipated geological factors classically used in H2 exploration. In the Paris Basin, the highest hydrogen concentration (52 vol%) was discovered in the Dogger aquifer. These wells are predominantly situated along the Bray Fault, suggesting a structural control on the distribution of hydrogen. A central issue for understanding skilled migration in the management literature is human capital. This emphasis ignores other important forms of capital mobilization that skilled migrants from developing countries deploy in dealing with the barriers to their international career mobility. There is therefore a need to develop a holistic understanding of capital mobilization of skilled migrants. In order to develop a more holistic picture, we deploy a relational and multilevel perspective to explore how skilled migrants from developing countries mobilize capital in their efforts to undertake an international career. Career is a central construct in this study. Drawing on a qualitative study of skilled Lebanese in Paris, the paper offers two main contributions to the research on human resource management, in particular to the literatures on skilled migration and self-initiated expatriation. First it extends our understanding of the strategies that skilled migrants use to relocate from a developing country to an industrialized country. Beyond the traditional human capital perspective, it offers insights about migrants' capital mobilization experiences of undertaking international mobility. Second, using Bourdieu's theory of capital, it offers a relational explanation of their capital mobilization in a way to encompass micro-individual, meso-organizational and macro-contextual influences that affect their career choices. This paper estimates a hedonic housing model based on flats sold in the city of Paris over the period 1990-2003. This is done using maximum likelihood estimation, taking into account the nested structure of the data. Paris is historically divided into 20 arrondissements, each divided into four quartiers (quarters), which in turn contain between 15 and 169 blocks ( îlot, in French) per quartier. This is an unbalanced pseudo-panel data containing 156,896 transactions. Despite the richness of the data, many neighborhood characteristics are not observed, and we attempt to capture these neighborhood spillover effects using a spatial lag model. Using likelihood ratio tests, we find significant spatial lag effects as well as significant nested random error effects. The empirical results show that the hedonic housing estimates and the corresponding marginal effects are affected by taking into account the nested aspects of the Paris housing data as well as the spatial neighborhood effects.Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. This paper analyzes the rise and decline of social movements in Amsterdam and Paris, focusing in particular on the organizations of left-wing immigrant workers. These organizations performed crucial roles for new social movements in the 1970s and 1980s but were isolated and coopted in the 1990s and early 2000s. To explain why this is so, we engage in a dialogue with Jacques Rancière and develop an understanding of cities as strategic sites for both politicization and policing. Cities serve as sites of politicization because they are incubators of the relational conduits that enable activists from different sectors to engage with one another's struggles and look beyond narrow temporal and spatial horizons. However, cities also serve as sites of policing because authorities constantly attempt to reconfigure governmental arrangements in such a way that civil society serves as an extension of the government and comes to fulfill an instrumental role in the development and implementation of policy. Just as politicizing implies the widening of temporal and spatial horizons, policing implies the narrowing of such horizons. The analysis shows the social movements of the 1960s lost steam in two of the major hubs of the new left and reveals some of the more universal mechanisms through which cities generate or quell dissent. It has been known for some time that the potential exists to construct a long daily series of surface pressure for the city of Paris because of the existence of various instrumental series that might be pieced together. The remarkable weather diary kept by the physician, Louis Morin, sets the start of the potential series to 1670, and various other series have now been digitized and corrected to allow the formation of a daily series of Mean Sea-Level Pressure (MSLP) that spans the greater part of 300 years. Unfortunately, a gap in the series still exists for the period 1726-1747, where it appears that no barometer observations have survived. This paper discusses the sources of the various pressure data used in the Paris daily MSLP series, and describes how these observations have been corrected and amalgamated to form a near-continuous, homogeneous series. The data are compared with a similar long daily series that has been independently constructed for the city of London (1692-2007). This comparison indicates that the two MSLP series are of a sufficient quality to provide useful information about the atmospheric circulation across western Europe over the last 300 years. Design Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data. Setting Maternity department of a teaching hospital in Paris (France). Population Data from 20 519 women and 21 448 infants were collected between January 2000 and December 2007. Methods CUSUM charts were used to monitor the rate of 19 pre-selected quality indicators over 3 years (2005–2007), against standards developed by department obstetrician gynaecologists. Periods with adverse event rates that did not meet the standards were identified. Main outcome measures Quality indicator rates. Results Indicators fell into three groups based on the number of periods with unacceptable rates: less than one per year [e.g. the rate of intensive care unit (ICU) admission of mothers and rate of third- or fourth-degree perineal tears]; one every 2–12 months on average (e.g. blood transfusion and sulprostone use in the overall population of women); and at least one per month (insufficient availability of epidural analgesia). Conclusion CUSUM charts for a broad range of quality indicators can be used to monitor the quality of care in an obstetrics department. A symposium called “Contribution of modelling in the paediatric drug development” was organized at Paris on July 5-6, 2007 under the auspices of INSERM. The following issues were highlighted and discussed by the participants at the end of the meeting during a round table: • What is the place of modelling at a preclinical stage in the paediatric development? • What is the place of modelling at a clinical stage in the paediatric development? • What are the requirements for an evaluation based on modelling? • What are the recommendations and guidelines need to be established to facilitate the use of modelling techniques in paediatrics? In addition to dental hospital clinical activity, dental students at Paris Rene Descartes University have the opportunity in their final year of study to practise clinically in a dental office, as associates. This paper outlines a pilot, experimental study designed to assess student reaction to this Vocational Clinical Activity (VCA) in order to identify relevant weaknesses of the undergraduate programme. Using questionnaires, data were collected for each of the following clinical or management skills: clinical difficulty, therapeutic decision-making, patient/practitioner relationship, time management, administrative matters and technical problems. Students were asked to rank each item in order of difficulty (1, high level to 6, low level). A high response rate was observed (90%) among the 50 undergraduate VCA students. The results pointed out three main difficulties encountered by undergraduate students during the VCA: time management (90% of the students), administrative matters (85% of the students) and clinical decision-making (80% of the students). These preliminary results need further investigation. However, they give us the incentive to carry on with this type of assessment and to extend it to young, qualified colleagues’ perceptions and to other French Universities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
