Background: The UK 5-year antimicrobial resistance (AMR) National Action Plan highlights the need to prevent community infections through education of children. Activities around infection prevention (IP) and antibiotics were piloted by UK youth groups in 2016–2018, prompting Public Health England (PHE) to develop a standardised programme. The aim of the study was to develop and pilot an educational programme on IP and antibiotics for use by community youth groups in the UK. Methods: A working group, including youth group volunteers interested in IP and AMR, agreed on the programme content through consensus, informed by the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation, Behaviour model (COM-B). The Antibiotic Guardian Youth Badge (AGYB) included learning through interactive e-Bug activities on IP and prudent antibiotic use, action setting through Antibiotic Guardian pledges and consolidation through poster development. The programme was piloted and evaluated with conveniently recruited youth groups in 2019, including quantitative and qualitative questionnaire feedback from community leaders and children. Results: Fourteen youth group leaders and 232 children from uniformed Girlguiding/Scout groups in England and Scotland participated in the pilot evaluation, as well as two primary schools. Leaders reported alignment to the themes of their youth organisation, but struggled to teach antibiotics and antibiotic resistance. Children reported enjoyment and intentions to improve hygiene behaviour. Conclusion: Community youth groups are a suitable setting for IP and antibiotics education. The AGYB was officially launched in March 2020 and promoted for use with home-schooling children and remote youth group meetings to educate about IP during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Medium chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MCADD) is a rare metabolic disorder, and commonly now part of newborn screening programs. Those diagnosed at birth are now progressing from childhood to adulthood. The study aim was to explore young people's experiences of living with MCADD and managing their condition. A descriptive qualitative study design involving semi-structured interviews with 12 participants aged 10 to 15 years, recruited from one regional pediatric metabolic disorder service in England. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The two major themes were "Eating for energy" and "Growing into a self-management role." Self-monitoring and self-management skills had been nurtured from early childhood by parents and healthcare providers. Young people's anxieties concerned having to maintain adequate energy input to stay safe and the associated burden of responsibility. Growing up with MCADD presents specific challenges. Introduction: The use of debating as an educational tool is increasing in popularity. Students who take part in debates can develop a range of skills such as confidence and communication as well as gaining a greater understanding of the topic discussed. Within this study we have evaluated an antibiotic-resistant debate kit, assessing the ability of the debate lesson to improve student knowledge and awareness around antibiotics. Methods: The debate lesson was delivered in seven schools across South West England to 235 students aged 13-16 years. Change in student knowledge was measured using before and after knowledge questionnaires. Student and teacher feedback and suggestions for improvements for the lesson were also collected through questionnaires and interviews. Results: Quantitative questionnaires found a significant improvement in knowledge for most areas covered in the debate, particularly around the use of antibiotics to treat colds and bacteria developing resistance. Teachers felt their students engaged well with the debate session and made suggestions for minor modifications that could improve the lesson. Conclusions: The results suggest that the e-Bug antibiotic resistant debate kit is able to improve knowledge in young people around antibiotics and antibiotic resistance. Furthermore, the lesson was enjoyed by students and therefore this resource should be promoted more widely to teachers and schools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective To determine (i) if electrospray mass spectrometry–mass spectrometry with the SpOtOn Diagnostics Ltd reagent kit for sickle cell screening could be integrated into the English newborn screening programme, under routine screening conditions, and provide mass spectrometry–mass spectrometry results which match existing methods, and (ii) if common action values could be set for all manufacturers in the study, for all assessed haemoglobins, to indicate which samples require further investigation. Methods Anonymised residual blood spots were analysed using the SpOtOn reagent kit as per manufacturer’s instructions, in parallel with existing techniques at four laboratories. Mass spectrometry–mass spectrometry instrumentation at Laboratories A and B was AB Sciex (Warrington, UK) AP4000, and at Laboratories C and D, Waters Micromass (Manchester, UK), Xevo TQMS and Premier, respectively. Results There were 23,898 results accepted from the four laboratories. Excellent specificity at 100% sensitivity was observed for haemoglobin S, haemoglobin C, haemoglobin E and haemoglobin OArab. A common action value was not possible for Hb C, but action values were set by manufacturer. The two haemoglobin DPunjab cases at Laboratory D were not detected using the common action value. Conversely, false-positive results with haemoglobin DPunjab were a problem at the remaining three laboratories. Conclusions This multicentre study demonstrates that it is possible to implement mass spectrometry–mass spectrometry into an established screening programme while maintaining consistency with existing methods for haemoglobinopathy screening. We audited adherence to national hepatitis B virus (HBV) immunisation policy for neonates and infants born to HBV positive mothers in two counties of England during 2007/08 to 2011/12 (n=112 in County X, n=190 in County Y). Over the five year period, 29.9% of at risk neonates in County X and 23.5% in County Y required hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) at birth. The annual median age of HBIG administration was 0.0–0.5 days. The annual median coverage and timeliness of the first (coverage range 92.3–100.0%; age of administration range 0.0–0.0 days), second (83.8–100.0%; 32.0–42.0 days), third (81.1–100.0%; 62.0–81.0 days) and fourth dose HBV immunisations (44.4–91.9%; 378.0–443.0 days) and serological testing (8.6–81.0%; 450.0–707.0 days) were calculated. Statistically significant variation was found in the coverage of third and fourth dose immunisations in County Y, age of fourth dose immunisation in County X, and the coverage and timeliness of serological testing in both counties (p < 0.05). HBIG and the first three HBV immunisations were commonly administered according to the national schedule. Fourth dose immunisations and serological tests showed poor adherence. We advocate public health interventions to improve immunisation programme outcomes and hepatitis B surface antigen testing. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The Self-Efficacy for Musical Learning questionnaire was adapted and tested with 404 primary school children, producing a robust Cronbach alpha (0.87) and confirming a single underlying factor through exploratory factor analysis. Test–retest scores showed the measure’s stability over a 9-month period. Data were collected on children’s prior music experience, extracurricular activities, and typical daily activities. Children also completed the Short Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Those currently engaged in music tuition (learning an instrument or singing) had significantly higher self-efficacy scores than children who were not, and overall, girls’ scores were significantly higher than boys’. Correlations with various additional measures, including wellbeing and reading for pleasure, highlighted multifaceted relationships of self-efficacy to children’s lives. Regression analyses revealed that prior experience with instrumental tuition was the strongest predictor of music self-efficacy for learning; prosocial behaviors predicted boys’ scores, and well-being predicted girls’ scores. The causes of serious domestic scald injuries in Birmingham were studied for one year. Seventy-eight people sustained such scalds, 11 adults and 67 children. Only 51 of the patients received satisfactory first aid. Most accidents could have been avoided and the severity of the injury would have been less if appropriate first aid had been given. An audit was undertaken of the first 36 children who had received cochlear implants in Nottingham. These children had previously derived no benefit from prolonged trials of powerful hearing aids. Following implantation, all children could hear warble tones at all audiometric frequencies from 500 to 4000 Hz at sound pressure levels between 30 and 50dB. The majority of children implanted below the age of 5 years developed intelligible spoken language after 3 years. The outcomes for children born deaf and those who acquired deafness under the age of 3 years were substantially similar. The best results were obtained in those children who were implanted before the age of 5 years or in whom the deafness was of short duration. The needs of implanted children continue over many years. A small number of dedicated, well-funded multidisciplinary teams are needed to meet the growing demand nationally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
