Solid water, in continental ice sheets, in permafrost, in floating sea ice, and in mountain glaciers, is far removed from the everyday purview of most people, but its precarious state in a warming world strikes to the heart of modern civilization. The massive ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica are both susceptible to MISI catastrophes; a runaway melt of just part of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet could raise sea level by nearly ten feet in the next 300 years, and a complete melt of the Greenland cap could add twenty feet more.
