Body force models of fans and compressors are widely employed for predicting performance due to the reduction in computational cost associated with their use, particularly in nonuniform inflows. Such models are generally divided into a portion responsible for flow turning and another for loss generation. Recently, accurate, uncalibrated turning force models have been developed, but accurate loss generation models have typically required calibration against higher fidelity computations (especially when flow separation occurs). In this paper, a blade profile loss model is introduced which requires the trailing edge boundary layer momentum thicknesses. To estimate the momentum thickness for a given blade section, an artificial neural network is trained using over 400,000 combinations of blade section shape and flow conditions. A blade-to-blade flow field solver is used to generate the training data. The model obtained depends only on blade geometry information and the local flow conditions, making its implementation in a typical computational fluid dynamics framework straightforward. This paper mainly proposes two kinds of artificial neural network (ANN) models for predicting the plastic anisotropy properties of sheet metal using spherical indentation test, which minimizes measurement time, costs, and simplifies the process of obtaining the anisotropy properties than the conventional tensile test. The proposed ANN models for predicting anisotropic properties can replace the traditional complex dimensionless analysis. Moreover, this paper is not limited to the prediction of yield strength anisotropy but also further accurately predicts the Lankford coefficient in different orientations. We newly construct an FE spherical indentation model, which is suitable for sheet metal in consideration of actual compliance. To obtain a large dataset for training the ANN, the constructed FE model is utilized to simulate pure and alloyed engineering metals with one thousand elastoplastic parameter conditions. We suggest the specific variables of the residual indentation mark as input parameters, also with the indentation load–depth curve. The profile of the residual indentation, including the height and length in different orientations, are used to analyze the anisotropic properties of the material. Experimental validations have been conducted with three different sheet alloys, TRIP1180 steel, zinc alloy, and aluminum alloy 6063-T6, comparing the proposed ANN model and the uniaxial tensile test. In addition, machine vision was used to efficiently analyze the residual indentation marks and automatically measure the indentation profiles in different orientations. One of the ongoing tasks in space structure testing is the vibration test, in which a given structure is mounted onto a shaker and excited by a certain input load on a given frequency range, in order to reproduce the rigor of launch. These vibration tests need to be conducted in order to ensure that the devised structure meets the expected loads of its future application. However, the structure must not be overtested to avoid any risk of damage. For this, the system's response to the testing loads, i.e., stresses and forces in the structure, must be monitored and predicted live during the test. In order to solve the issues associated with existing methods of live monitoring of the structure's response, this paper investigated the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict the system's responses during the test. Hence, a framework was developed with different use cases to compare various kinds of artificial neural networks and eventually identify the most promising one. Featured Application: This paper presents solutions for smart devices with embedded artificial intelligence dedicated to vehicular applications. Virtual sensors based on neural networks or regressors provide real-time predictions on diesel engine power loss caused by increased exhaust back pressure. The actual trade-off among engine emissions and performance requires detailed investigations into exhaust system configurations. Correlations among engine data acquired by sensors are susceptible to artificial intelligence (AI)-driven performance assessment. The influence of exhaust back pressure (EBP) on engine performance, mainly on effective power, was investigated on a turbocharged diesel engine tested on an instrumented dynamometric test-bench. The EBP was externally applied at steady state operation modes defined by speed and load. A complete dataset was collected to supply the statistical analysis and machine learning phases—the training and testing of all the AI solutions developed in order to predict the effective power. By extending the cloud-/edge-computing model with the cloud AI/edge AI paradigm, comprehensive research was conducted on the algorithms and software frameworks most suited to vehicular smart devices. A selection of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and regressors was implemented and evaluated. Accuracy improvement has been one of the most outstanding issues in the recommender systems research community. Recently, multi-criteria recommender systems that use multiple criteria ratings to estimate overall rating have been receiving considerable attention within the recommender systems research domain. This paper proposes a neural network model for improving the prediction accuracy of multi-criteria recommender systems. The neural network was trained using simulated annealing algorithms and integrated with two samples of single-rating recommender systems. The paper presents the experimental results for each of the two single-rating techniques together with their corresponding neural network-based models. To analyze the performance of the approach, we carried out a comparative analysis of the performance of each single rating-based technique and the proposed multi-criteria model. In this investigation, an artificial-neural-network-based mathematical model was developed for the prediction of nickel adsorption data. As input variables, the initial concentration, adsorbent dosage, and pH of the nickel solution were chosen, while the removal efficiency was chosen as an output variable. The hyperparameters were optimized to determine the perfect topology for the model. The study demonstrated that the 3-2-1 ANN architecture was the most suitable topology. The determination coefficient of 0.98 and the mean squared error of 0.02 indicated the high performance of the developed model, which was successfully applied for isotherm data prediction. Background: Artificial neural networks are statistical methods that mimic complex neural connections, simulating the learning dynamics of the human brain. They play a fundamental role in clinical decision-making, although their success depends on good integration with clinical protocols. When applied to lung cancer research, artificial neural networks do not aim to be biologically realistic, but rather to provide efficient models for nonlinear regression or classification. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of EMBASE (via Ovid), MEDLINE (via PubMed), Cochrane CENTRAL, and Google Scholar from April 2018 to December 2022, using a combination of keywords and related terms for "artificial neural network", "lung cancer", "non-small cell lung cancer", "diagnosis", and "treatment". Results: Artificial neural networks have shown excellent aptitude in learning the relationships between the input/output mapping from a given dataset, without any prior information or assumptions about the statistical distribution of the data. They can simultaneously process numerous variables, managing complexity; hence, they have found broad application in tasks requiring attention. Conclusions: Lung cancer is the most common and lethal form of tumor, with limited diagnostic and treatment methods. The advances in tailored medicine have led to the development of novel tools for diagnosis and treatment. Artificial neural networks can provide valuable support for both basic research and clinical decision-making. In order to improve the prediction accuracy of the machine learning model for concrete fatigue life using small datasets, a group calculation and random weight dynamic time warping barycentric averaging (GRW-DBA) data augmentation method is proposed. First, 27 sets of real experimental data were augmented by 10 times, 20 times, 50 times, 100 times, 200 times, 500 times, and 1000 times, respectively, using the GRW-DBA method, and the optimal factor was determined by comparing the model's training time and prediction accuracy under different augmentation multiples. Then, a concrete fatigue life prediction model was established based on artificial neural network (ANN), and the hyperparameters of the model were determined through experiments. Finally, comparisons were made with data augmentation methods such as generative adversarial network (GAN) and regression prediction models such as support vector machine (SVM), and the generalization of the method was verified using another fatigue life dataset collected on the Internet. The result shows that the GRW-DBA algorithm can significantly improve the prediction accuracy of the ANN model when using small datasets (the R2 index increased by 20.1% compared with the blank control, reaching 98.6%), and this accuracy improvement is also verified in different data distributions. Software defined networking (SDN) is an emerging networking architecture that separates the control plane from the data plane and moves network management to a central point, called the controller. The controller is responsible for preparing the flow tables of each switch in the data plane. Although dynamic routing can perform rerouting in case of congestion by periodically monitoring the status of each data flow, problems concerning a suitable monitoring period duration and lack of learning ability from past experiences to avoid similar but ineffective route decisions remain unsolved. This paper presents an artificial intelligence enabled routing (AIER) mechanism with congestion avoidance in SDN, which can not only alleviate the impact of monitoring periods with dynamic routing, but also provide learning ability and superior route decisions by introducing artificial intelligence (AI) technology. We evaluate the performance of the proposed AIER mechanism on the Mininet simulator by installing three additional modules, namely, topology discovery, monitoring period, and an artificial neural network, in the control plane. The effectiveness and superiority of our proposed AIER mechanism are demonstrated by performance metrics, including average throughput, packet loss ratio, and packet delay versus data rate for different monitoring periods in the system. The sound quality (SQ) and sound perception assessments of electric vehicles (EVs) clearly differ from those of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). Therefore, it is essential to describe and evaluate the SQ of EVs. To evaluate the SQ in EVs, it is necessary to organize evaluators for conducting subjective jury tests, which are time-consuming and labor-intensive. In addition, the evaluation results are subject to the evaluators themselves and other external interferences. With the advancement of machine learning and artificial neural networks (ANNs), this problem can be well solved. This paper outlines a model for SQ estimation in EVs based on a genetic algorithm-optimized back propagation artificial neural network (GA-BP ANN). Moreover, the correlation between the physical-psychoacoustical parameters and the subjective SQ estimations obtained from the jury tests was investigated in this study. It was found that the GA-BP ANN SQ model has many advantages in comparison with the multiple linear regression (MLR) model in terms of precision and generalization. In this paper, we study the volatility forecasts in the Bitcoin market, which has become popular in the global market in recent years. Since the volatility forecasts help trading decisions of traders who want a profit, the volatility forecasting is an important task in the market. For the improvement of the forecasting accuracy of Bitcoin's volatility, we develop the hybrid forecasting models combining the GARCH family models with the machine learning (ML) approach. Specifically, we adopt Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Higher Order Neural Network (HONN) for the ML approach and construct the hybrid models using the outputs of the GARCH models and several relevant variables as input variables. We carry out many experiments based on the proposed models and compare the forecasting accuracy of the models. In addition, we provide the Model Confidence Set (MCS) test to find statistically the best model. The present paper proposes an approach for the development of a non-linear model-based predictive controller (NMPC) using a non-linear process model based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). This work exploits recent trends on ANN literature using a TensorFlow implementation and shows how they can be efficiently used as support for closed-loop control systems. Furthermore, it evaluates how the generalization capability problems of neural networks can be efficiently overcome when the model that supports the control algorithm is used outside of its initial training conditions. The process's transient response performance and steady-state error are parameters under focus and will be evaluated using a MATLAB's Simulink implementation of a Coupled Tank Liquid Level controller and a Yeast Fermentation Reaction Temperature controller, two well-known benchmark systems for non-linear control problems. The cloud manufacturing platform needs to allocate the endlessly emerging tasks to the resources scattered in different places for processing. However, this real-time scheduling problem in the cloud environment is more complicated than that in a traditional workshop because constraints, such as type matching, task precedence, resource occupation, and logistics duration, need to be met, and the internal manufacturing plan of providers must also be considered. Since the platform aggregates massive manufacturing resources to serve large-scale manufacturing tasks, the space of feasible solutions is huge, resulting in many conventional search algorithms no longer being applicable. In this paper, we considered resource allocation as the key procedure for real-time scheduling, and an ANN (Artificial Neural Network) based model is established to predict the task completion status for resource allocation among candidates. The trained ANN model has high prediction accuracy, and the ANN-based scheduling approach performs better than the preferred method in terms of the optimization objectives, including total cost, service satisfaction, and make-span. Axial bearing capacity of piles is the most important parameter in pile foundation design. In this paper, artificial neural network (ANN) and random forest (RF) algorithms were utilized to predict the ultimate axial bearing capacity of driven piles. An unprecedented database containing 2314 driven pile static load test reports were gathered, including the pile diameter, length of pile segments, natural ground elevation, pile top elevation, guide pile segment stop driving elevation, pile tip elevation, average standard penetration test (SPT) value along the embedded length of pile, and average SPT blow counts at the tip of pile as input variables, whereas the ultimate load on pile top was considered as output variable. The dataset was divided into the training (70%) and testing (30%) parts for the construction and validation phases, respectively. Various error criteria, namely mean absolute error (MAE), root mean squared error (RMSE), and the coefficient of determination (R2) were used to evaluate the performance of RF and ANN algorithms. In addition, the predicted results of pile load tests were compared with five empirical equations derived from the literature and with classical multi-variable regression. The results showed that RF outperformed ANN and other methods. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to reveal that the average SPT value and pile tip elevation were the most important factors in predicting the axial bearing capacity of piles. The mean age of air (MAA) is one of the most useful parameters in evaluating indoor air quality in natural ventilated buildings. Its evaluation is generally based on the CO2 monitoring within the environment; however, other methods can be found in the literature, but they have not always led to satisfactory results. In this context, the present paper is focused on two main topics: the effect of the windows airtightness and of the environmental conditions on MAA and the application of artificial neural network (ANN) for the CO2 prediction within the room. Two case studies (case study 1 located in Terni and case study 2 located in Perugia) were investigated, which differ in geometric dimensions (useful area, volume, window area) and in airtightness of windows. The indoor and outdoor environmental conditions (air temperature, pressure, relative humidity, air velocity, and indoor CO2 concentration) were monitored in 33 experimental campaigns, in four room configurations: open door-open window (OD-OW); closed door-open window (CD-OW); open door-closed window (OD-CW); closed door-closed window (CD-CW). Tracer decay methodology, according to ISO 16000-8:2007 standard, was compiled during all the experimental campaigns. A feedforward ANN, able to simulate the indoor CO2 concentration within the rooms, was then implemented; the monitored environmental conditions (air temperature, pressure, relative humidity, and air velocity), the geometric dimensions (useful area, volume, window area), and the airtightness of windows were provided as input data, while the CO2 concentration was used as target. In particular, data of 19 experimental campaigns were provided for the training process of the network, while 14 were only used for testing the reliability of ANN. The CO2 concentration predicted by ANN was then used for the MAA calculation in the four room configurations. Experimental results show that MAA of case study 2 is always higher, in all the examined configurations, due to the higher airtightness characteristics of the window and to the higher volume of the room. When the difference between indoor and outdoor temperature increases, the MAA increases too, in almost all the investigated configurations. Finally, the CO2 concentration predicted by ANN was compared with experimental data; results show a good accuracy of the network both in CO2 prediction and in the MAA calculation. The predicted CO2 concentration at the beginning of experimental campaigns (time step 0) always differs less than 2% from experimental data, while a mean percentage difference of −18.8% was found considering the maximum CO2 concentration. The MAA calculated using the predicted CO2 of ANN was greater than the one obtained from experimental data, with a difference in the 0.5–1.3 min range, depending on the configuration. Bridge displacements are one of the most important physical values in evaluating the health of bridges. However, the direct measurement of bridge displacements is not easy due to various factors, such as installation location and cost. For that reason, in a previous study (part 1), a method for predicting bridge displacements from strains was proposed using an artificial neural network (ANN), which has a strong ability in data mapping. In this paper, to predict the overall displacements from a small number of strains more efficiently, a method to optimize the number and locations of strain-measurement points was proposed using the genetic algorithm (GA), which is widely used for global optimization. To verify the proposed methods, two cases, a simple beam under sinusoidal loads and a girder bridge under vehicle loads, are carried out through numerical analysis. Also, a laboratory experiment is carried out with a vibrating cantilever beam. The results indicate that the predicted displacements from at least two strains at the optimized locations show good agreements with displacements by numerical analysis and measurements. A Virtual energy assessment (VEA) refers to the assessment of the energy flow in a building without physical data collection. It has been occasionally conducted before the COVID-19 pandemic to residential and commercial buildings. However, there is no established framework method for conducting this type of energy assessment. The COVID-19 pandemic has catalysed the implementation of remote energy assessments and remote facility management. In this paper, a novel framework for VEA is developed and tested on case study buildings at the University of Melbourne. The proposed method is a hybrid of top-down and bottom-up approaches: gathering the general information of the building and the historical data, in addition to investigating and modelling the electrical consumption with artificial neural network (ANN) with a projection of the future consumption. Through sensitivity analysis, the outdoor temperature was found to be the most sensitive (influential) parameter to electrical consumption. The lockdown of the buildings provided invaluable opportunities to assess electrical baseload with zero occupancies and usage of the building. Furthermore, comparison of the baseload with the consumption projection through ANN modelling accurately quantifies the energy consumption attributed to occupation and operational use, referred to as 'operational energy' in this paper. Differentiation and quantification of the baseload and operational energy may aid in energy conservation measures that specifically target to minimise these two distinct energy consumptions. In many site investigation phases of civil and mining engineering projects, the tensile strength of the rocks is one of the most significant parameters that must be identified. This parameter can be determined directly through laboratory tests. However, conducting such laboratory tests is costly and time consuming. In this paper, a new artificial neural network (ANN)-based model is developed to predict rock tensile strength, using the invasive weed optimization (IWO) technique. Granite samples for the purpose of this research were selected from a tunnel located in Malaysia and underwent appropriate laboratory tests (i.e., Schmidt hammer, point load, dry density, as well as the Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) as system output). A simple regression analysis was carried out, and the obtained results confirmed the need for developing a model with multiple inputs, rather than one with only a single input, in order to predict BTS values. Aiming to highlight the capability of an IWO-ANN model in estimating BTS, artificial bee colony (ABC)-ANN and imperialism competitive algorithm (ICA)-ANN were also applied and developed. The parameters required for the ANN-based models were obtained using different parametric studies. According to calculated performance indices, a new hybrid IWO-ANN model can provide a higher accuracy level for the prediction of BTS compared to the ABC-ANN and ICA-ANN models. The motivation of the presented paper is the desire to create a universal tool to analyse the process of austenite decomposition during the cooling process of various steel grades. The presented analysis concerns the application of Recurrent Artificial Neural Networks (RANN) of the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) type for the analysis of the transition path of the cooling curve. This type of network was selected due to its ability to predict events in time sequences. The proposed generalisation allows for the determination of the austenite transformation during the continuous cooling process for various cooling curves. As training data for the neural network, values determined from the macroscopic model based on the analysis of Continuous Cooling Transformation (CCT) diagrams were used. All relations and analyses used to build training/testing or validation sets are presented in the paper. The modelling with the use of LSTM network gives the possibility to determine the incremental changes of phase transformation (in a given time step) with the assumed changes of temperature resulting from the considered cooling rate. Many dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) manufacturing companies encounter significant resistance value deviations during the PVD sputtering process for manufacturing Ti thin films. These resistance values are influenced by the thickness of the thin films. Current mitigation strategies focus on adjusting film thickness to reduce resistance deviations, but this approach affects product structure profile and performance. Additionally, varying Ti thin film thicknesses across different product structures increase manufacturing complexity. This study aims to minimize resistance value deviations across multiple film thicknesses with minimal resource utilization. To achieve this goal, we propose the TSDTM-ANN-GA framework, which integrates the two-stage dynamic Taguchi method (TSDTM), artificial neural networks (ANN), and genetic algorithms (GA). The proposed framework requires significantly fewer experimental resources than traditional full factorial design and grid search method, making it suitable for resource-constrained and low-power computing environments. Our TSDTM-ANN-GA framework successfully identified an optimal production condition configuration for five different Ti thin film thicknesses: Degas temperature = 245 °C, Ar flow = 55 sccm, DC power = 5911 W, and DC power ramp rate = 4009 W/s. The results indicate that the deviation between the resistance values and their design values for the five Ti thin film thicknesses decreased by 86.8%, 94.1%, 95.9%, 98.2%, and 98.8%, respectively. The proposed method effectively reduced resistance deviations for the five Ti thin film thicknesses and simplified manufacturing management, allowing the required design values to be achieved under the same manufacturing conditions. This framework can efficiently operate on resource-limited and low-power computers, achieving the goal of real-time dynamic production parameter adjustments and enabling DRAM manufacturing companies to improve product quality promptly. Quantum coherence is a crucial resource in numerous quantum processing tasks. The robustness of coherence provides an operational measure of quantum coherence, which can be calculated for various states using semidefinite programming. However, this method depends on convex optimization and can be time-intensive, especially as the dimensionality of the space increases. In this study, we employ machine learning techniques to quantify quantum coherence, focusing on the robustness of coherence. By leveraging artificial neural networks, we developed and trained models for systems with different dimensionalities. Monitoring the integrity of aeronautical structures is fundamental for safety. Structural Health Monitoring Systems (SHMSs) perform real-time monitoring functions, but their performance must be carefully assessed. This is typically done by introducing artificial damages to the components; however, such a procedure requires the production and testing of a large number of structural elements. In this work, the damage detection performance of a strain-based SHMS was evaluated on a composite helicopter rotor blade root, exploiting a Finite Element (FE) model of the component. The SHMS monitored the bonding between the central core and the surrounding antitorsional layer. A damage detection algorithm was trained through FE analyses. The effects of the load's variability and of the damage were decoupled by including a load recognition step in the algorithm, which was accomplished either with an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) or a calibration matrix. Anomaly detection, damage assessment, and localization were performed by using an ANN. The results showed a higher load identification and anomaly detection accuracy using an ANN for the load recognition, and the load set was recognized with a satisfactory accuracy, even in damaged blades. This case study was focused on a real-world subcomponent with complex geometrical features and realistic load conditions, which was not investigated in the literature and provided a promising approach to estimate the performance of a strain-based SHMS. A map of the environment is the basis for the robot's navigation. Multi-robot collaborative autonomous exploration allows for rapidly constructing maps of unknown environments, essential for application areas such as search and rescue missions. Traditional autonomous exploration methods are inefficient due to the repetitive exploration problem. For this reason, we propose a multi-robot autonomous exploration method based on the Transformer model. Our multi-agent deep reinforcement learning method includes a multi-agent learning method to effectively improve exploration efficiency. We conducted experiments comparing our proposed method with existing methods in a simulation environment, and the experimental results showed that our proposed method had a good performance and a specific generalization ability. In recent years, the increasing demand and rising prices of rare earth elements (REEs), along with their attendant supply risk (about 95% of these elements are supplied by China), have led the European Commission to consider REEs as critical raw materials. Developing and optimizing processes for recovering REEs from secondary sources such as NdFeB magnets is fundamental in this context. A novel method to recover REEs by leaching with citric acid and subsequently separating these elements using the solvent extraction method has been introduced. Therefore, this research investigates the leaching efficiency of REEs, Fe, and B from NdFeB magnets. A full factorial design, with 18 experimental setups, was conducted to optimize the citric acid concentration (1–3 mol/L), leaching time (1–3 h), and solid–liquid ratio (5–10%wt./vol.). All tests were carried out at room temperature and 150 rpm. Different optimizations (response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) analysis) are used to maximize the REEs' leaching efficiency. RSM resulted in a maximum extraction yield of total rare earth elements (TREEs) of about 89% in the investigated experimental plan. This result is similar to that for ANN analysis (about 86%), but more accurate than that for RSM. In fact, for the ANN, an overall R-value higher than 0.99 was obtained. In this work we construct a surrogate model using artificial neural networks (ANN) to predict the steady-state behavior of an unmanned combat aircraft. We employ various strategies to improve the model's accuracy, including the consideration of design tolerances, creating independent surrogate models for the different flow regimes and encoding non-numeric input features. We also explore alternative machine learning models, albeit they demonstrated a lower reliability than ANNs. Two scenarios are considered for the target variable: one focusing solely on predicting the pitching moment coefficient, and the other incorporating the roll moment coefficient as well. We investigate different methods for handling multiple targets, finding that constructing a single model with multiple outputs consistently outperforms developing separate models for each target variable. Conventional concrete causes significant environmental problems, including resource depletion, high CO2 emissions, and high energy consumption. Steel slag aggregate (SSA), a by-product of the steelmaking industry, offers a sustainable alternative due to its environmental benefits and improved mechanical properties. This study examined the predictive power of four modeling techniques—Gene Expression Programming (GEP), an Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Random Forest Regression (RFR), and Gradient Boosting (GB)—to predict the compressive strength (CS) of SSA concrete. Using 367 datasets from the literature, six input variables (cement, water, granulated furnace slag, superplasticizer, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, and age) were utilized to predict compressive strength. The models' performance was evaluated using statistical measures such as the mean absolute error (MAE), root mean squared error (RMSE), mean values, and coefficient of determination (R2). Results indicated that the GB model consistently outperformed RFR, GEP, and the ANN, achieving the highest R2 values of 0.99 and 0.96 for the training and testing dataset, respectively, followed by RFR with R2 values of 0.97 (training) and 0.93 (testing), GEP with R2 values of 0.85 (training) and 0.87 (testing), and ANN with R2 values of 0.61 (training) and 0.82 (testing). Over the past decade, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of various technologies in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction sector. Artificial intelligence has played a significant role throughout the different phases of the design and construction process. A growing body of literature recognizes the importance of artificial neural network applications in numerous areas of the construction industry and the built environment, presenting a need to explore the main research themes, attributes, benefits, and challenges. A three-step extensive research method was utilized by conducting a bibliometric search of English language articles and conducting quantitative and qualitative analyses. The bibliometric analysis aimed to identify the current research directions and gaps forming future research areas. The scientometric analysis of keywords revealed diverse areas within the construction industry linked to ANNs. The qualitative analysis of the selected literature revealed that energy management in buildings and construction cost predictions were the leading research topics in the study area. These findings recommend directions for further research in the field, for example, broadening the application ranges of ANNs in the current Construction 4.0 technologies, such as robotics, 3D printing, digital twins, and VR applications. In mountainous areas, high-filled subgrade often experiences significant post-construction settlement. Prematurely paving the cement-stabilized gravel layer on an unstable subgrade can easily lead to subsequent cracking. To accurately predict the settlement of high-filled subgrade and determine the appropriate timing for paving the cement-stabilized layer, this study proposes a subgrade settlement prediction method combining an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) with a Genetic Algorithm (GA). Using monitoring data from a high-filled subgrade on a highway in Hunan Province, China, a GA–ANN model was established to predict settlement curves. The predicted data from the GA–ANN model were compared with measured data and ANN predictions to validate the advantages of using GA–ANN for subgrade settlement prediction. The results indicate that the GA–ANN model significantly outperforms the ANN model due to GA's ability to provide more reasonable weight biases for ANN through global search optimization. Predictions of settlement data beyond 50 days using both ANN and GA–ANN showed that the GA–ANN prediction curve closely matched the measured curve, with a basic deviation within ±3 mm. In contrast, ANN's prediction error gradually increased to over 5 mm as the observation time increased, with predicted values lower than measured values, leading to an overly optimistic estimation of early settlement convergence. Based on the predicted data and settlement standards, the estimated timing for laying the stabilized layer was determined. During the laying process, no cracking was observed in the stabilized layer. The project has been in operation for six months, with the road surface in good condition. With the progressive reduction in virgin material availability and the growing global concern for sustainability, civil engineering researchers worldwide are shifting their attention toward exploring alternative and mechanically sound technological solutions. The feasibility of preparing both cold and hot asphalt mixtures (AMs) for road pavement binder layers with construction and demolition wastes (C&DWs) and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) partially replacing virgin materials like limestone aggregates and filler has already been proven. The technical suitability and compliance with technical specifications for road paving materials involved the evaluation of mechanical and volumetric aspects by means of indirect tensile strength tests and saturated surface dry voids, respectively. Thus, the main goal of the present study is to train, validate, and test selected machine learning algorithms based on data obtained from the previous experimental campaign with the aim of predicting the volumetric properties and the mechanical performance of the investigated mixtures. A comparison between the predictions made by ridge and lasso regression techniques and both shallow (SNN) and deep neural network (DNN) models showed that the latter achieved better predictive capabilities, highlighted by fully satisfactory performance metrics. DNN performance can be summarized by R2 values equal to 0.8990 in terms of saturated surface dry void predictions, as well as 0.9954 in terms of indirect tensile strength predictions. On schematic metro maps, high-quality label placement is helpful to passengers performing route planning and orientation tasks. It has been reported that the artificial neural network (ANN) has the potential to place labels with learned labeling knowledge. However, the previous ANN-based method only considered the effects of station points and their connected edges. Indeed, unconnected but surrounding features (points, edges, and labels) also significantly affect the quality of label placement. To address this, we have proposed an improved method. The relations between label positions and both connected and surrounding features are first modeled based on labeling natural intelligence (i.e., the experience, knowledge, and rules of labeling established by cartographers). Then, ANN is employed to learn such relations. Quantitative evaluations show that our method reaches lower percentages of label–point overlap (0.00%), label–edge overlap (4.12%), and label–label overlap (20.58%) compared to the benchmark (4.17%, 14.29%, and 35.11%, respectively). On the other hand, our method effectively avoids ambiguous labels and ensures labels from the same line are placed on the same side. Qualitative evaluations show that approximately 75% of users prefer our results. This novel method has the potential to advance the automated generation of schematic metro maps. Conveyor belts are vital for material transportation in coal mines due to their cost-effectiveness and versatility. These belts endure significant wear from harsh operating conditions, risking substantial financial losses if they fail. This study develops five artificial neural network (ANN) models to predict conveyor belt damage using 11 parameters from the Belchatow brown coal mine in Poland. The models target five outputs: number of repairs and cable cuts, cumulative number of repairs and cable cuts, and their ages. Various optimizers (Adam, Nadam, RMSprop, Adamax, and stochastic gradient descent or SGD) and activation functions (ReLU, Swish, sigmoid, tanh, Leaky ReLU, and softmax) were tested to find the optimal configurations. Polymer flooding is a prominent enhanced oil recovery process that is widely recognized for its cost-effectiveness and substantial success in increasing oil production. In this study, the Buckley–Leverett mathematical model for polymer flooding was used to generate more than 163,000 samples that reflect different reservoir conditions using seven input parameters. We introduced artificial noise into the dataset to simulate real-world conditions and mitigate overfitting. Seven classic machine learning models and two neural networks were trained on this dataset to predict the oil recovery factor based on the input parameters. Among these, polynomial regression performed best with a coefficient of determination ( R 2 ) of 0.909, and the dense neural network and cascade-forward neural network achieved R 2 scores of 0.908 and 0.906, respectively. Our analysis included permutation feature importance and metrics analysis, where key features across all models were identified, and the model's performance was evaluated on a range of metrics. Compared with similar studies, this research uses a significantly larger and more realistic synthetic dataset that explores a broader spectrum of machine learning models. Thus, when applied to a real dataset, our methodology can aid in decision-making by identifying key parameters that enhance oil production and predicting the oil recovery factor given specific parameter values. Three-dimensional printing, or additive manufacturing, represents one of the fastest growing branches of the industry, and fused deposition modeling (FDM) is one of most frequently used technologies. Three-dimensional printing does not provide high-quality surfaces, so finishing is required, and milling is one of the best methods for improving surface quality. The combination of 3D printing and traditional manufacturing technologies is known as hybrid manufacturing. Accurately and instantly estimating the hydrodynamic characteristics in two-phase liquid–gas flow is crucial for industries like oil, gas, and other multiphase flow sectors to reduce costs and emissions, boost efficiency, and enhance operational safety. This type of flow involves constant slippage between gas and liquid phases caused by a deformable interface, resulting in changes in gas volumetric fraction and the creation of structures known as flow patterns. Empirical and numerical methods used for prediction often result in significant inaccuracies during scale-up processes. Different methodologies based on artificial intelligence (AI) are currently being applied to predict hydrodynamic characteristics in two-phase liquid–gas flow, which was corroborated with the bibliometric analysis where AI techniques were found to have been applied in flow pattern recognition, volumetric fraction determination for each fluid, and pressure gradient estimation. Supramolecular solvent-based extraction (SUPRAS) stands out as a promising approach, particularly due to its environmentally friendly and efficient characteristics. This research explores the optimization of SUPRAS extraction for sango radish and kale microgreens, focusing on enhancing the extraction efficiency. The Taguchi experimental design and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling were utilized to systematically optimize extraction parameters (ethanol content, SUPRAS: equilibrium ratio, centrifugation rate, centrifugation time, and solid-liquid ratio). The extraction efficiency was evaluated by measuring the antioxidant activity (DPPH assay) and contents of chlorophylls, carotenoids, phenolics, and anthocyanidins. The obtained results demonstrated variability in phytochemical contents and antioxidant activities across microgreen samples, with the possibility of achieving high extraction yields using the prediction of optimized parameters. The optimal result for sango radish can be achieved at an ethanol content of 35.7%; SUPRAS: equilibrium ratio of 1 v/v, centrifugation rate of 4020 rpm, centrifugation time of 19.84 min, and solid-liquid ratio of 30.2 mg/mL. The following parameters are predicted for maximal extraction efficiency for kale: ethanol content of 35.64%; SUPRAS: equilibrium ratio of 1 v/v; centrifugation rate of 3927 rpm; centrifugation time of 19.83 min; and solid-liquid ratio of 30.4 mg/mL. Additionally, laboratory verification of predicted SUPRAS parameters showed very low divergency degrees for both microgreens (–3.09 to 2.36% for sango radish, and −2.57 to 3.58% for kale). This potential of SUPRAS extraction, coupled with statistical and computational optimization techniques, can enhance the recovery of valuable bioactive compounds from microgreens and contribute to green extraction applications. We develop a phase-resolved wave field reconstruction method by the learning-based downsampling network for processing large amounts of inhomogeneous data from non-contact wave optical observations. The Waves Acquisition Stereo System (WASS) extracts dense point clouds from ocean wave snapshots. We couple learning-based downsampling networks with the phase-resolved wave reconstruction algorithm, and the training task is to improve the wave reconstruction completeness ratio C R . The algorithm first achieves initial convergence and task-optimized performance on numerical ocean waves built by the linear wave theory model. Results show that the trained sampling network can lead to a more uniform spatial distribution of sampling points and improve C R at the observed edge regions far from the optical camera. Finally, we apply our algorithm to a natural ocean wave dataset. The average completeness ratio is improved over 30% at low sampling ratios ( S R ∈ [ 2 − 9 , 2 − 7 ] ) compared to the traditional FPS method and Random sampling method. Moreover, the relative residual between the final reconstructed wave and the natural wave is less than 15%, which provides an efficient tool for wave reconstruction in ocean engineering. The purpose of this paper is to report quantitative data and models for the flow stress for the computer simulation of friction stir welding (FSW). In this paper, the flow stresses of the commercial 6061 aluminum alloy at the typical temperatures in FSW are investigated quantitatively by using hot compression tests. The typical temperatures during FSW are determined by reviewing the literature data. The measured data of flow stress, strain rate and temperature during hot compression tests are fitted to a Sellars–Tegart equation. An artificial neural network is trained to implement an accurate model for predicting the flow stress as a function of temperature and strain rate. Two models, i.e., the Sellars–Tegart equation and artificial neural network, for predicting the flow stress are compared. It is found that the root-mean-squared error (RMSE) between the measured and the predicted values are found to be 3.43 MPa for the model based on the Sellars–Tegart equation and 1.68 MPa for the model based on an artificial neural network. During the past century, energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions have increased drastically due to a wide variety of factors including both technological and population-based. Therefore, increasing our energy efficiency is of great importance in order to achieve overall sustainability. Forecasting the building energy consumption is important for a wide variety of applications including planning, management, optimization, and conservation. Data-driven models for energy forecasting have grown significantly within the past few decades due to their increased performance, robustness and ease of deployment. Amongst the many different types of models, artificial neural networks rank among the most popular data-driven approaches applied to date. This paper offers a review of the studies published since the year 2000 which have applied artificial neural networks for forecasting building energy use and demand, with a particular focus on reviewing the applications, data, forecasting models, and performance metrics used in model evaluations. Based on this review, existing research gaps are identified and presented. This paper studied the changing pattern of knee cartilage using 3D knee magnetic resonance (MR) images over a 12-month period. As a pilot study, we focused on the medial tibia compartment of the knee joint. To quantify the thickness of cartilage in this compartment, we utilized two methods: one was measurement through manual segmentation of cartilage on each slice of the 3D MR sequence; the other was measurement through cartilage damage index (CDI), which quantified the thickness on a few informative locations on cartilage. We employed the artificial neural networks (ANNs) to model the changing pattern of cartilage thickness. The input feature space was composed of the thickness information at a cartilage location as well as its neighborhood from baseline year data. The output categories were 'changed' and 'no-change', based on the thickness difference at the same location between the baseline year and the 12-month follow-up data. Different ANN models were trained by using CDI features and manual segmentation features. Further, for each type of feature, individual models were trained at different subregions of the medial tibia compartment, i.e., the bottom part, the middle part, the upper part, and the whole. Based on the experiment results, we found that CDI features generated better prediction performance than manual segmentation, on both whole medial tibia compartment and any subregion. For CDI, the best performance in term of AUC was obtained using the central CDI locations (AUC = 0.766), while the best performance for manual segmentation was obtained using all slices of the 3D MR sequence (AUC = 0.656). As experiment results showed, the CDI method demonstrated a stronger pattern of cartilage change than the manual segmentation method, which required up to 6-hour manual delineation of all MRI slices. The generation of energy from renewable sources is subjected to very dynamic changes in environmental parameters and asset operating conditions. This is a very relevant issue to be considered when developing reliability studies, modeling asset degradation and projecting renewable energy production. This paper proposes computational models to investigate the effects of dust and ambient temperature on the performance of a photovoltaic system built at the Hashemite University, Jordan. The system is connected on-grid with an azimuth angle of 0° and a tilt angle of 26°. The models have been developed employing optimized architectures of artificial neural network (ANN) and extreme learning machine (ELM) models to estimate conversion efficiency based on experimental data. The methodology of building the models is demonstrated and validated for its accuracy using different metrics. The effect of each parameter was found to be in agreement with the well-known relationship between each parameter and the predicted efficiency. It is found that the optimized ELM model predicts conversion efficiency with the best accuracy, yielding an R2 of 91.4%. Moreover, a recommendation for cleaning frequency of every two weeks is proposed. Finally, different scenarios of electricity tariffs with their sensitivity analyses are illustrated. This paper considers the effect of nonlinear atmospheric disturbances on wind power prediction. A Lorenz system is introduced as an atmospheric disturbance model. Three new improved wind forecasting models combined with a Lorenz comprehensive disturbance are put forward in this study. Firstly, we define the form of the Lorenz disturbance variable and the wind speed perturbation formula. Then, different artificial neural network models are used to verify the new idea and obtain better wind speed predictions. Finally we separately use the original and improved wind speed series to predict the related wind power. This proves that the corrected wind speed provides higher precision wind power predictions. This paper addresses the improvement of tracking of the maximum power point upon the variations of the environmental conditions and hence improving photovoltaic efficiency. Rather than the traditional methods of maximum power point tracking, artificial intelligence is utilized to design a high-performance maximum power point tracking control system. In this paper, two artificial intelligence-based maximum power point tracking systems are proposed for grid-connected photovoltaic units. The first design is based on an optimized fuzzy logic control using genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization for the maximum power point tracking system. In turn, the second design depends on the genetic algorithm-based artificial neural network. Each of the two artificial intelligence-based systems has its privileged response according to the solar radiation and temperature levels. Then, a novel combination of the two designs is introduced to maximize the efficiency of the maximum power point tracking system. The novelty of this paper is to employ the metaheuristic optimization technique with the well-known artificial intelligence techniques to provide a better tracking system to be used to harvest the maximum possible power from photovoltaic (PV) arrays. To affirm the efficiency of the proposed tracking systems, their simulation results are compared with some conventional tracking methods from the literature under different conditions. ANNs succeed in several tasks for real scenarios due to their high learning abilities. This paper focuses on theoretical aspects of ANNs to enhance the capacity of implementing those modifications that make ANNs absorb the defining features of each scenario. This work may be also encompassed within the trend devoted to providing mathematical explanations of ANN performance, with special attention to activation functions. The base algorithm has been mathematically decoded to analyse the required features of activation functions regarding their impact on the training process and on the applicability of the Universal Approximation Theorem. Particularly, significant new results to identify those activation functions which undergo some usual failings (gradient preserving) are presented here. This is the first paper—to the best of the author's knowledge—that stresses the role of injectivity for activation functions, which has received scant attention in literature but has great incidence on the ANN performance. In this line, a characterization of injective activation functions has been provided related to monotonic functions which satisfy the classical contractive condition as a particular case of Lipschitz functions. The study of penetration depth of gravity piston samplers has an essential impact on sampling efficiency and instrument safety. This study focuses on predicting penetration depth based on the characteristic parameters of the sampled seafloor sediments and the sampler parameters. Although numerous studies of gravity corer penetration depth have been carried out, most have been based on the energy conservation equation, which considers a varying number of influencing factors. Furthermore, most research has focused on the same research idea of finding analytical solutions. The present study proposes a new approach to predicting gravity corer penetration depth based on a machine learning method that uses real sampling data from the sea and experimental data from a gravity sampling physical model for training and testing. Experimental results indicate that the machine learning model can accurately predict gravity corer penetration depth. Moreover, predictions were made for the same penetration conditions using the machine learning model and three other analytical solution models. Results show that the prediction accuracy of machine learning outperforms that of the analytical prediction model under various statistical rubrics. This study demonstrates the capacity of the proposed machine learning model and provides civil engineers with an effective tool to predict the penetration depth of gravity corers. Featured Application: This work can be conjunctly used with the support characteristic curve of circular tunnels to find the optimum time of the installation of the support system in a way to restrict the displacements to a specific value. The approach described in this manuscript facilitates the design of circular tunnels for elasto-plastic, strain-softening rock masses obeying both Mohr–Coulomb and Hoek–Brown strength criteria. The prediction of the support pressure (Pi) and the development of the ground reaction curve (GRC) are crucial elements of the convergence–confinement procedure used to design underground structures. In this paper, two different types of artificial neural networks (ANNs) are used to predict the Pi of circular tunnels in elasto-plastic, strain-softening rock mass. The developed ANNs consider the stress state, the radial displacement of tunnel and the material softening behavior. Among these parameters, strain softening is the parameter of the deterioration of the material’s strength in the plastic zone. The analysis also presents separate solutions for the Mohr–Coulomb and Hoek–Brown strength criteria. In this regard, multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and radial basis function (RBF) ANNs were successfully applied. MLP with the architectures of 15-5-10-1 for the Mohr–Coulomb criteria and 17-5-15-1 for the Hoek–Brown criteria appeared optimum for the prediction of the Pi. On the other hand, the RBF networks with the architectures of 15-5-1 for the Mohr–Coulomb criterion and 17-3-12-1 for the Hoek–Brown criterion were found to be the optimum for the prediction of the Pi. With the economic growth and increasing urbanization in the last three decades, the air quality over China has continuously degraded, which poses a great threat to human health. The concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) directly affects the mortality of people living in the polluted areas where air quality is poor. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region, one of the well organized urban regions in northern China, has suffered with poor air quality and atmospheric pollution due to recent growth of the industrial sector and vehicle emissions. In the present study, we used the back propagation neural network model approach to estimate the spatial distribution of PM2.5 concentration in the BTH region for the period January 2014-December 2016, combining the satellite-derived aerosol optical depth (S-DAOD) and meteorological data. The results were validated using the ground PM2.5 data. The general method including all PM2.5 training data and 10-fold cross-method have been used for validation for PM2.5 estimation (R2 = 0.68, RMSE = 20.99 for general validation; R2 = 0.54, RMSE = 24.13 for cross-method validation). The study provides a new approach to monitoring the distribution of PM2.5 concentration. The paper focuses on developing constitutive models for superplastic deformation behaviour of near-α titanium alloy (Ti-2.5Al-1.8Mn) at elevated temperatures in a range from 840 to 890 °C and in a strain rate range from 2 × 10-4 to 8 × 10-4 s-1. Stress-strain experimental tensile tests data were used to develop the mathematical models. Both, hyperbolic sine Arrhenius-type constitutive model and artificial neural-network model were constructed. A comparative study on the competence of the developed models to predict the superplastic deformation behaviour of this alloy was made. The fitting results suggest that the artificial neural-network model has higher accuracy and is more efficient in fitting the superplastic deformation flow behaviour of near-α Titanium alloy (Ti-2.5Al-1.8Mn) at superplastic forming than the Arrhenius-type constitutive model. However, the tested results revealed that the error for the artificial neural-network is higher than the case of Arrhenius-type constitutive model for predicting the unmodelled conditions. The inherently intermittent and highly variable nature of wind necessitates the use of wind power forecasting tools in order to facilitate the integration of wind turbines in microgrids, among others. In this direction, the present paper describes the development of a short-term wind power forecasting model based on artificial neural network (ANN) clustering, which uses statistical feature parameters in the input vector, as well as an enhanced version of this approach that adjusts the ANN output with the probability of lower misclassification (PLM) method. Moreover, it employs the Monte Carlo simulation to represent the stochastic variation of wind power production and assess the impact of energy management decisions in a residential wind-battery microgrid using the proposed wind power forecasting models. The results indicate that there are significant benefits for the microgrid when compared to the naïve approach that is used for benchmarking purposes, while the PLM adjustment method provides further improvements in terms of forecasting accuracy. A self-organizing map (SOM) is an artificial neural network algorithm that can learn from the training data consisting of objects expressed as vectors and perform non-hierarchical clustering to represent input vectors into discretized clusters, with vectors assigned to the same cluster sharing similar numeric or alphanumeric features. SOM has been used widely in transcriptomics to identify co-expressed genes as candidates for co-regulated genes. I envision SOM to have great potential in characterizing heterogeneous sequence motifs, and aim to illustrate this potential by a parallel presentation of SOM with a set of numerical vectors and a set of equal-length sequence motifs. While there are numerous biological applications of SOM involving numerical vectors, few studies have used SOM for heterogeneous sequence motif characterization. This paper is intended to encourage (1) researchers to study SOM in this new domain and (2) computer programmers to develop user-friendly motif-characterization SOM tools for biologists.
