Artificial neural networks (ANNs) can be used for accurate heat load forecasting in district heating systems (DHSs). This paper presents an application of a shallow ANN with two hidden layers in the case of a local DHS. The developed model was used to write a simple application in Python 3.10 that can be used in the operation of a district heating plant to carry out a preliminary analysis of heat demand, taking into account the ambient temperature on a given day. The model was trained using the real data from the period 2019–2022. The training was sufficient for the number of 150 epochs. The prediction effectiveness indicator was proposed. In the considered case, the effectiveness of the trained network was 85% and was better in comparison to five different regression models. Pore pressure prediction is a critical parameter in petroleum engineering and is essential for safe drilling operations and wellbore stability. However, traditional methods for pore pressure prediction, such as empirical correlations, require selecting appropriate input parameters and may not capture the complex relationships between these parameters and the pore pressure. In contrast, artificial neural networks (ANNs) can learn complex relationships between inputs and outputs from data. This paper presents a new empirical correlation for predicting pore pressure using ANNs. The proposed method uses 42 datasets of well log data, including temperature, porosity, and water saturation, to train ANNs for pore pressure prediction. The trained model, with the Bayesian regularization backpropagation function, predicts the pore pressure with an average absolute percentage error (AAPE) and correlation coefficient (R) of 4.22% and 0.875, respectively. The trained ANN is then used to develop a new empirical correlation that relates pore pressure to the input parameters considering the weights and biases of the optimized ANN model. To validate the proposed correlation, it is applied to a blind dataset, where the model successfully predicts the pore pressure with an AAPE of 5.44% and R of 0.957. The results show that the proposed correlation provides accurate and reliable predictions of pore pressure. Despite advancements in smart grid (SG) technology, effective load forecasting utilizing big data or large-scale datasets remains a complex task for energy management, planning, and control. The Saudi SGs, in alignment with the Saudi Vision 2030, have been envisioned as future electrical grids with a bidirectional flow of power and data. To that end, data analysis and predictive models can enhance Saudi SG planning and control via artificial intelligence (AI). Recently, many AI methods including deep learning (DL) algorithms for SG applications have been published in the literature and have shown superior time series predictions compared with conventional prediction models. Current load-prediction research for the Saudi grid focuses on identifying anticipated loads and consumptions, on utilizing limited historical data and the behavior of the load's consumption, and on conducting shallow forecasting models. However, little scientific proof on complex DL models or real-life application has been conducted by researchers; few articles have studied sophisticated large-scale prediction models for Saudi grids. This paper proposes hybrid DL methods to enhance the outcomes in Saudi SG load forecasting, to improve problem-relevant features, and to accurately predict complicated power consumption, with the goal of developing reliable forecasting models and of obtaining knowledge of the relationships between the various features and attributes in the Saudi SGs. The model in this paper utilizes a real dataset from the Jeddah and Medinah grids in Saudi Arabia for a full year, 2021, with a one-hour time resolution. A benchmark strategy using different conventional DL methods including artificial neural network, recurrent neural network (RNN), conventional neural networks (CNN), long short-term memory (LSTM), gated recurrent unit (GRU), and different real datasets is used to verify the proposed models. The prediction results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid DL models, with CNN–GRU and CNN–RNN with NRMSE obtaining 1.4673% and 1.222% improvements, respectively, in load forecasting accuracy. Load forecasting (LF) is an essential factor in power system management. LF helps the utility maximize the utilization of power-generating plants and schedule them both reliably and economically. In this paper, a novel and hybrid forecasting method is proposed, combining a long short-term memory network (LSTM) and neural prophet (NP) through an artificial neural network. The paper aims to predict electric load for different time horizons with improved accuracy as well as consistency. The proposed model uses historical load data, weather data, and statistical features obtained from the historical data. Multiple case studies have been conducted with two different real-time data sets on three different types of load forecasting. The hybrid model is later compared with a few established methods of load forecasting found in the literature with different performance metrics: mean average percentage error (MAPE), root mean square error (RMSE), sum of square error (SSE), and regression coefficient (R). Moreover, a guideline with various attributes is provided for different types of load forecasting considering the applications of the proposed model. The results and comparisons from our test cases showed that the proposed hybrid model improved the forecasting accuracy for three different types of load forecasting over other forecasting techniques. Daily electricity peak load forecasting is important for electricity generation capacity planning. Accurate forecasting leads to saving on excessive electricity generating capacity, while maintaining the stability of the power system. The main challenging tasks in this research field include improving forecasting accuracy and reducing computational time. This paper proposes a hybrid model involving variational mode decomposition (VMD), empirical mode decomposition (EMD), fast Fourier transform (FFT), stepwise regression, similar days selection (SD) method, and artificial neural network (ANN) for daily electricity peak load forecasting. Stepwise regression and similar days selection method are used for input variable selection. VMD and FFT are applied for data decomposition and seasonality capturing, while EMD is employed for determining an appropriate decomposition level for VMD. The hybrid model is constructed to effectively forecast special holidays, which have different patterns from other normal weekdays and weekends. The performance of the hybrid model is tested with real electricity peak load data provided by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, the leading power utility state enterprise under the Ministry of Energy. Experimental results show that the hybrid model gives the best performance while saving computation time by solving the problems in input variable selection, data decomposition, and imbalance data of normal and special days in the training process. The analysis of influential machine parameters can be useful to plan and design a plastic injection molding process. However, current research in parameter analysis is mostly based on computer-aided engineering (CAE) or simulation which have been demonstrated to be inadequate for analyzing complex behavioral changes in the real injection molding process. More advanced approaches using machine learning technology specifically with artificial neural networks (ANNs) brought promising results in terms of prediction accuracy. Nevertheless, the black box and distributed representation of ANN prevent humans from gaining an insight into which process parameters give a significant influence on the final prediction output. Therefore, in this paper, we develop a simpler ANN model by using structural learning with forgetting (SLF) as the algorithm for the training process. Instead of typical backpropagation which generated a fully connected layer of the ANN model, SLF only reveals the important neurons and connections. Hence, the training process of SLF leaves only influential connections and neurons. Since each of the neurons specifically on the input layer represent each of the injection molding parameters, the ANN-SLF model can be further investigated to determine the influential process parameters. Tarbela is the largest earth-filled dam in Pakistan, used for both irrigation and power production. Tarbela has already lost around 41.2% of its water storage capacity through 2019, and WAPDA predicts that it will continue to lose storage capacity. If this issue is ignored for an extended period of time, which is not far away, a huge disaster will occur. Sedimentation is one of the significant elements that impact the Tarbela reservoir's storage capacity. Therefore, it is crucial to accurately predict the sedimentation inside the Tarbela reservoir. In this paper, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) architecture and multivariate regression technique are proposed to validate and predict the amount of sediment deposition inside the Tarbela reservoir. Four input parameters on yearly basis including rainfall (Ra), water inflow (Iw), minimum water reservoir level (Lr), and storage capacity of the reservoir (Cr) are used to evaluate the proposed machine learning models. Multivariate regression analysis is performed to undertake a parametric study for various combinations of influencing parameters. It was concluded that the proposed neural network model estimated the amount of sediment deposited inside the Tarbela reservoir more accurately as compared to the multivariate regression model because the maximum error in the case of the proposed neural network model was observed to be 4.01% whereas in the case of the multivariate regression model was observed to be 60.7%. Then, the validated neural network model was used for the prediction of the amount of sediment deposition inside the Tarbela reservoir for the next 20 years based on the time series univariate forecasting model ETS forecasted values of Ra, Iw, Lr, and Cr. Southwest Asia has different climate types including arid, semiarid, Mediterranean, and temperate regions. Due to the complex interactions among components of the Earth system, forecasting precipitation is a difficult task in such large regions. The aim of this paper is to propose a learning approach, based on artificial neural network (ANN) and random forest (RF) algorithms for post-processing the output of forecasting models, in order to provide a multi-model ensemble forecasting of monthly precipitation in southwest Asia. For this purpose, four forecasting models, including GEM-NEMO, NASA-GEOSS2S, CanCM4i, and COLA-RSMAS-CCSM4, included in the North American multi-model ensemble (NMME) project, are considered for the ensemble algorithms. Since each model has nine different lead times, a total of 108 different ANN and RF models are trained for each month of the year. To train the proposed ANN an RF models, the ERA5 reanalysis dataset is employed. To compare the performance of the proposed algorithms, four performance evaluation criteria are calculated for each model. The results indicate that the performance of the ANN and RF post-processing is better than that of the individual NMME models. Moreover, RF outperformed ANN for all lead times and months of the year. To find the optimal design for an engineering object, thousands of (or even more) simulations should be implemented to obtain the outcome data for the variously designed objects. However, repeating simulations this many times is impossible because a typical simulation is a computationally expensive task. Instead of conducting all the required simulations, a more efficient way is predicting the outcome from the approximation model, called the surrogate model. The response surface method (RSM) with polynomials and artificial neural network (ANN) are the most prominent methods in constructing a surrogate model in the engineering fields. In this study, the prediction accuracy of the surrogate models computed by using an RSM and ANN is compared with several datasets showing different complexities. This comparison is investigated by constructing the surrogate models in predicting aerodynamic performance of a wind turbine airfoil. In the current paper, it is verified that the prediction accuracy of the ANN-computed surrogate model is higher than the RSM-computed one when the datasets have a high level of complexity, but the opposite phenomenon is observed if the datasets have a low level of complexity. When the surrogate models with different accuracies are used to enhance the performance of a wind turbine airfoil, the surrogate model with a high level of accuracy produces the optimal design, showing a high performance improvement. The current study is expected to give guidance on how to properly choose between an RSM and ANN to construct a highly accurate surrogate model that can help in finding a design with a high performance improvement during the optimization process. The power generated by wind generators is usually associated with uncertainties, due to the intermittency of wind speed and other weather variables. This creates a big challenge for transmission system operators (TSOs) and distribution system operators (DSOs) in terms of connecting, controlling and managing power networks with high-penetration wind energy. Hence, in these power networks, accurate wind power forecasts are essential for their reliable and efficient operation. They support TSOs and DSOs in enhancing the control and management of the power network. In this paper, a novel two-stage hybrid approach based on the combination of the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT), genetic algorithm (GA) and artificial neural network (ANN) is proposed for day-ahead wind power forecasting. The approach is composed of two stages. The first stage utilizes numerical weather prediction (NWP) meteorological information to predict wind speed at the exact site of the wind farm. The second stage maps actual wind speed vs. power characteristics recorded by SCADA. Then, the wind speed forecast in the first stage for the future day is fed to the second stage to predict the future day's wind power. Comparative selection of input-data parameter sets for the forecasting model and impact analysis of input-data dependency on forecasting accuracy have also been studied. The proposed approach achieves significant forecasting accuracy improvement compared with three other artificial intelligence-based forecasting approaches and a benchmark model using the smart persistence method. One of the ongoing tasks in space structure testing is the vibration test, in which a given structure is mounted onto a shaker and excited by a certain input load on a given frequency range, in order to reproduce the rigor of launch. These vibration tests need to be conducted in order to ensure that the devised structure meets the expected loads of its future application. However, the structure must not be overtested to avoid any risk of damage. For this, the system's response to the testing loads, i.e., stresses and forces in the structure, must be monitored and predicted live during the test. In order to solve the issues associated with existing methods of live monitoring of the structure's response, this paper investigated the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict the system's responses during the test. Hence, a framework was developed with different use cases to compare various kinds of artificial neural networks and eventually identify the most promising one. Featured Application: This paper presents solutions for smart devices with embedded artificial intelligence dedicated to vehicular applications. Virtual sensors based on neural networks or regressors provide real-time predictions on diesel engine power loss caused by increased exhaust back pressure. The actual trade-off among engine emissions and performance requires detailed investigations into exhaust system configurations. Correlations among engine data acquired by sensors are susceptible to artificial intelligence (AI)-driven performance assessment. The influence of exhaust back pressure (EBP) on engine performance, mainly on effective power, was investigated on a turbocharged diesel engine tested on an instrumented dynamometric test-bench. The EBP was externally applied at steady state operation modes defined by speed and load. A complete dataset was collected to supply the statistical analysis and machine learning phases—the training and testing of all the AI solutions developed in order to predict the effective power. By extending the cloud-/edge-computing model with the cloud AI/edge AI paradigm, comprehensive research was conducted on the algorithms and software frameworks most suited to vehicular smart devices. A selection of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and regressors was implemented and evaluated. Axial bearing capacity of piles is the most important parameter in pile foundation design. In this paper, artificial neural network (ANN) and random forest (RF) algorithms were utilized to predict the ultimate axial bearing capacity of driven piles. An unprecedented database containing 2314 driven pile static load test reports were gathered, including the pile diameter, length of pile segments, natural ground elevation, pile top elevation, guide pile segment stop driving elevation, pile tip elevation, average standard penetration test (SPT) value along the embedded length of pile, and average SPT blow counts at the tip of pile as input variables, whereas the ultimate load on pile top was considered as output variable. The dataset was divided into the training (70%) and testing (30%) parts for the construction and validation phases, respectively. Various error criteria, namely mean absolute error (MAE), root mean squared error (RMSE), and the coefficient of determination (R2) were used to evaluate the performance of RF and ANN algorithms. In addition, the predicted results of pile load tests were compared with five empirical equations derived from the literature and with classical multi-variable regression. The results showed that RF outperformed ANN and other methods. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to reveal that the average SPT value and pile tip elevation were the most important factors in predicting the axial bearing capacity of piles. The mean age of air (MAA) is one of the most useful parameters in evaluating indoor air quality in natural ventilated buildings. Its evaluation is generally based on the CO2 monitoring within the environment; however, other methods can be found in the literature, but they have not always led to satisfactory results. In this context, the present paper is focused on two main topics: the effect of the windows airtightness and of the environmental conditions on MAA and the application of artificial neural network (ANN) for the CO2 prediction within the room. Two case studies (case study 1 located in Terni and case study 2 located in Perugia) were investigated, which differ in geometric dimensions (useful area, volume, window area) and in airtightness of windows. The indoor and outdoor environmental conditions (air temperature, pressure, relative humidity, air velocity, and indoor CO2 concentration) were monitored in 33 experimental campaigns, in four room configurations: open door-open window (OD-OW); closed door-open window (CD-OW); open door-closed window (OD-CW); closed door-closed window (CD-CW). Tracer decay methodology, according to ISO 16000-8:2007 standard, was compiled during all the experimental campaigns. A feedforward ANN, able to simulate the indoor CO2 concentration within the rooms, was then implemented; the monitored environmental conditions (air temperature, pressure, relative humidity, and air velocity), the geometric dimensions (useful area, volume, window area), and the airtightness of windows were provided as input data, while the CO2 concentration was used as target. In particular, data of 19 experimental campaigns were provided for the training process of the network, while 14 were only used for testing the reliability of ANN. The CO2 concentration predicted by ANN was then used for the MAA calculation in the four room configurations. Experimental results show that MAA of case study 2 is always higher, in all the examined configurations, due to the higher airtightness characteristics of the window and to the higher volume of the room. When the difference between indoor and outdoor temperature increases, the MAA increases too, in almost all the investigated configurations. Finally, the CO2 concentration predicted by ANN was compared with experimental data; results show a good accuracy of the network both in CO2 prediction and in the MAA calculation. The predicted CO2 concentration at the beginning of experimental campaigns (time step 0) always differs less than 2% from experimental data, while a mean percentage difference of −18.8% was found considering the maximum CO2 concentration. The MAA calculated using the predicted CO2 of ANN was greater than the one obtained from experimental data, with a difference in the 0.5–1.3 min range, depending on the configuration. During the past century, energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions have increased drastically due to a wide variety of factors including both technological and population-based. Therefore, increasing our energy efficiency is of great importance in order to achieve overall sustainability. Forecasting the building energy consumption is important for a wide variety of applications including planning, management, optimization, and conservation. Data-driven models for energy forecasting have grown significantly within the past few decades due to their increased performance, robustness and ease of deployment. Amongst the many different types of models, artificial neural networks rank among the most popular data-driven approaches applied to date. This paper offers a review of the studies published since the year 2000 which have applied artificial neural networks for forecasting building energy use and demand, with a particular focus on reviewing the applications, data, forecasting models, and performance metrics used in model evaluations. Based on this review, existing research gaps are identified and presented. Transportation significantly influences greenhouse gas emissions—particularly carbon dioxide (CO2)—thereby affecting climate, health, and various socioeconomic aspects. Therefore, in developing and implementing targeted and effective policies to mitigate the environmental impacts of transportation-related carbon dioxide emissions, governments and decision-makers have focused on identifying methods for the accurate and reliable forecasting of carbon emissions in the transportation sector. This study evaluates these policies' impacts on CO2 emissions using three forecasting models: ANN, SVR, and ARIMAX. Data spanning the years 1993–2022, including those on population, GDP, and vehicle kilometers, were analyzed. The results indicate the superior performance of the ANN model, which yielded the lowest mean absolute percentage error (MAPE = 6.395). Moreover, the results highlight the limitations of the ARIMAX model; particularly its susceptibility to disruptions, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, due to its reliance on historical data. Leveraging the ANN model, a scenario analysis of trends under the "30@30" policy revealed a reduction in CO2 emissions from fuel combustion in the transportation sector to 14,996.888 kTons in 2030. This article presents a comparative analysis of two prominent machine learning techniques for predicting electricity consumption in workplace lighting systems: polynomial regression analysis and artificial neural networks. The primary objective is to assess their suitability and applicability for developing an accurate predictive model. After a brief overview of the current state of energy-saving techniques, the article examines several established models for predicting energy consumption in buildings and systems. These models include artificial neural networks, regression analysis and support vector machines. It then focuses on a practical comparison between polynomial regression analysis and an artificial neural network-based model. The article then looks at the data preparation process, outlining how the data is used within each model to establish appropriate prediction functions. Finally, it describes the methods used to evaluate the accuracy of the developed prediction functions. These functions allow the prediction of lighting consumption based on external lighting intensity. The article evaluates the accuracy of the developed prediction functions using the root mean square error, correlation coefficient and coefficient of determination values. The article compares these values obtained for both models, allowing a conclusive assessment of which model provides superior accuracy in predicting lighting consumption based on external lighting intensity. An integrated methodological approach to the development of a coastal flood early-warning system is presented in this paper to improve societal preparedness for coastal flood events. The approach consists of two frameworks, namely the Hindcast Framework and the Forecast Framework. The aim of the former is to implement a suite of high-credibility numerical models and validate them according to past flooding events, while the latter takes advantage of these validated models and runs a plethora of scenarios representing distinct sea-state events to train an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) that is capable of predicting the impending coastal flood risks. The proposed approach was applied in the flood-prone coastal area of Rethymno in the Island of Crete in Greece. The performance of the developed ANN is good, given the complexity of the problem, accurately predicting the targeted coastal flood risks. It is capable of predicting such risks without requiring time-consuming numerical simulations; the ANN only requires the offshore wave characteristics (height, period and direction) and sea-water-level elevation, which can be obtained from open databases. Photovoltaic power forecasting is an important problem for renewable energy integration in the grid. The purpose of this review is to analyze current methods to predict photovoltaic power or solar irradiance, with the aim of summarizing them, identifying gaps and trends, and providing an overview of what has been achieved in recent years. A search on Web of Science was performed, obtaining 60 articles published from 2020 onwards. These articles were analyzed, gathering information about the forecasting methods used, the horizon, time step, and parameters. The most used forecasting methods are machine learning and deep learning based, especially artificial neural networks. Most of the articles make predictions for one hour or less ahead and predict power instead of irradiance, although both parameters are strongly correlated, and output power depends on received irradiance. Finally, they use weather variables as inputs, consisting mainly of irradiance, temperature, wind speed and humidity. Overall, there is a lack of hardware implementations for real-time predictions, being an important line of development in future decades with the use of embedded prediction systems at the photovoltaic installations. Silicon content forecasting models have been requested by the operational team to anticipate necessary actions during the blast furnace operation when producing molten iron, to control the quality of the product and reduce costs. This paper proposed a new algorithm to perform the silicon content time series up to 8 h ahead, immediately after the molten iron chemical analysis is delivered by the laboratory. Due to the delay of the laboratory when delivering the silicon content measurement, the proposed algorithm considers a minimum useful forecasting horizon of 3 h ahead. In a first step, it decomposes the silicon content time series into different subseries using the Maximal Overlap Discrete Wavelet Packet Transform (MODWPT). Next, all subseries forecasts were determined through Nonlinear Autoregressive (NAR) networks, and finally, these forecasts were summed to furnish the long-term forecast of silicon content. Conventional pipeline corrosion assessment methods result in failure pressure predictions that are conservative, especially for pipelines that are subjected to internal pressure and axial compressive stress. Alternatively, numerical methods may be used. However, they are computationally expensive. This paper proposes an analytical equation based on finite element analysis (FEA) for the failure pressure prediction of a high toughness corroded pipeline with a single corrosion defect subjected to internal pressure and axial compressive stress. The equation was developed based on the weights and biases of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model trained with failure pressure from finite element analysis (FEA) of a high toughness pipeline for various defect depths, defect lengths, and axial compressive stresses. The proposed model was validated against actual burst test results for high toughness materials and was found to be capable of making accurate predictions with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.99. An extensive parametric study using the proposed model was subsequently conducted to determine the effects of defect length, defect depth, and axial compressive stress on the failure pressure of a corroded pipe with a single defect. The application of ANN together with FEA has shown promising results in the development of an empirical solution for the failure pressure prediction of pipes with a single corrosion defect subjected to internal pressure and axial compressive stress. This paper presents four refined distance models to the application of forecasting short-term electricity price namely Euclidean norm, Manhattan distance, cosine coefficient, and Pearson correlation coefficient. The four refined models were constructed and used to select the days, which are like a reference day in electricity prices and loads, called similar days in this study. Using the similar days, the electricity prices of a forecast day were further obtained by similar day regression (SDR) and similar day based artificial neural network (SDANN). The simulation results of the case of the PJM (Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland) interchange energy market indicate the superiority and availability of the selection 45 framework days and three similar days based on Pearson correlation coefficient model. The thiourea (TU) leaching of gold from refractory ores can be considered an alternative to cyanidation. However, the high reagent consumption causes an increase in cost, which seriously limits its use. In order to effectively reduce the TU consumption, it is necessary to analyze the influencing parameters of gold recovery and TU consumption and apply them to the prediction of the TU leaching process. This paper investigated six potential influencing parameters and used grey relational analysis (GRA) to analyze the relational degree between each parameter and gold recovery and TU consumption. Then, the artificial neural network (ANN) model was established to simultaneously predict the gold recovery and TU consumption in the TU gold leaching process. The results of the GRA indicated that the leaching time, initial pH, temperature, TU dosage, stirring speed, and ferric iron concentration were all well related to the gold recovery and TU consumption. Therefore, the incorporation of these parameters can significantly improve the ANN model validation. The predictive results noted that the prediction accuracy of gold recovery varied from 94.46% to 98.06%, and the TU consumption varied from 95.15% to 99.20%. Thus, the predicted values corresponded closely to the experimental results, which suggested that the ANN model can accurately reflect the relationship between the operational conditions and the gold recovery and TU consumption. In this paper, an artificial neural network is implemented for the sake of predicting the thermal conductivity ratio of TiO2-Al2O3/water nanofluid. TiO2-Al2O3/water in the role of an innovative type of nanofluid was synthesized by the sol–gel method. The results indicated that 1.5 vol.% of nanofluids enhanced the thermal conductivity by up to 25%. It was shown that the heat transfer coefficient was linearly augmented with increasing nanoparticle concentration, but its variation with temperature was nonlinear. It should be noted that the increase in concentration may cause the particles to agglomerate, and then the thermal conductivity is reduced. The increase in temperature also increases the thermal conductivity, due to an increase in the Brownian motion and collision of particles. In this research, for the sake of predicting the thermal conductivity of TiO2-Al2O3/water nanofluid based on volumetric concentration and temperature functions, an artificial neural network is implemented. In this way, for predicting thermal conductivity, SOM (self-organizing map) and BP-LM (Back Propagation-Levenberq-Marquardt) algorithms were used. Based on the results obtained, these algorithms can be considered as an exceptional tool for predicting thermal conductivity. Process-based models have been employed extensively in the last decades for the prediction of coastal bed evolution in the medium term (1–5 years), under the combined action of waves and currents, due to their ability to resolve the dominant coastal processes. Despite their widespread application, they are associated with high demand for computational resources, rendering the annual prediction of the coastal bed evolution a tedious task. To combat this, wave input reduction methods are generally employed to reduce the sheer amount of sea-states to be simulated to assess the bed level changes. The purpose of this research is to further expand on the concept of input reduction methods by presenting a methodology combining numerical modelling and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The trained ANN is tasked with eliminating wave records unable to initiate sediment motion and hence further reduce the required computational times. The methodology was implemented in both an idealized and a real-field case study to examine the sensitivity, and produced very satisfactory predictions of the rates of bed level change, with respect to a benchmark simulation containing a very detailed wave climate. The obtained results have strong implications for further accelerating the demanding morphological simulations while enhancing the reliability and accuracy of model predictions. Prediction of lightning occurrence has significant relevance for reducing potential damage to electric installations, buildings, and humans. However, the existing lightning warning system (LWS) operates using the threshold method and has low prediction accuracy. In this paper, an intelligent LWS based on an electromagnetic field and the artificial neural network was developed for improving lightning prediction accuracy. An electric field mill sensor and a pair of loop antennas were designed to detect the real-time electric field and the magnetic field induced by lightning, respectively. The change rate of electric field, temperature, and humidity acquired 2 min before lightning strikes, were used for developing the neural network using the back propagation algorithm. With the application of complex fracturing and other complex technologies, external extrusion has become the main cause of casing damage, which makes non-API high-extrusion-resistant casing continuously used in unconventional oil and gas resources exploitation. Due to the strong sensitivity of string ovality, uneven wall thickness, residual stress, and other factors to high anti-collapse casing, the API formula has a big error in predicting the anti-collapse strength of high anti-collapse casing. Therefore, Bayesian regularization artificial neural network (BRANN) is used to predict the external collapse strength of high anti-collapse casing. By collecting full-scale physical data, including initial defect data, geometric size, mechanical parameters, etc., after data preprocessing, the casing collapse strength data set is established for model training and blind measurement. Under the classical three-layer neural network, the Bayesian regularization algorithm is used for training. Through empirical formula and trial and error method, it is determined that when the number of hidden neurons is 12, the model is the best prediction model for high collapse resistance casing. The prediction results of the blind test data imported by the model show that the coincidence rate of BRANN casing collapse strength prediction can reach 96.67%. Through error analysis with API formula prediction results and KT formula prediction results improved by least square fitting, the BRANN-based casing collapse strength prediction has higher accuracy and stability. Compared with the traditional prediction method, this model can be used to predict casing strength under more complicated working conditions, and it has a certain guiding significance. This article involves forecasting daily electricity consumption in Thailand. Electricity consumption data are provided by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, the leading power utility state enterprise under the Ministry of Energy. Five forecasting techniques, including multiple linear regression, artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine, hybrid models, and ensemble models, are implemented. The article proposes a hyperparameter tuning technique, called sequential grid search, which is based on the widely used grid search, for ANN and hybrid models. Auxiliary variables and indicator variables that can improve the models' forecasting performance are included. From the computational experiment, the hybrid model of a multiple regression model to forecast the expected daily consumption and ANNs from the sequential grid search to forecast the error term, along with additional indicator variables for some national holidays, provides the best mean absolution percentage error of 1.5664% on the test data set. This paper discusses the capabilities of artificial neural networks (ANNs) when integrated with the finite element method (FEM) and utilized as prediction tools to predict the failure pressure of corroded pipelines. The use of conventional residual strength assessment methods has proven to produce predictions that are conservative, and this, in turn, costs companies by leading to premature maintenance and replacement. ANNs and FEM have proven to be strong failure pressure prediction tools, and they are being utilized to replace the time-consuming methods and conventional codes. Wind speed and wind power are two important indexes for wind farms. Accurate wind speed and power forecasting can help to improve wind farm management and increase the contribution of wind power to the grid. However, nonlinear and non-stationary wind speed and wind power can influence the forecasting performance of different models. To improve forecasting accuracy and overcome the influence of the original time series on the model, a forecasting system that can effectively forecast wind speed and wind power based on a data pre-processing strategy, a modified multi-objective optimization algorithm, a multiple single forecasting model, and a combined model is developed in this study. A data pre-processing strategy was implemented to determine the wind speed and wind power time series trends and to reduce interference from noise. Multiple artificial neural network forecasting models were used to forecast wind speed and wind power and construct a combined model. To obtain accurate and stable forecasting results, the multi-objective optimization algorithm was employed to optimize the weight of the combined model. As a case study, the developed forecasting system was used to forecast the wind speed and wind power over 10 min from four different sites. The point forecasting and interval forecasting results revealed that the developed forecasting system exceeds all other models with respect to forecasting precision and stability. Accuracy metrics have been widely used for the evaluation of predictions in machine learning. However, the selection of an appropriate accuracy metric for the evaluation of a specific prediction has not yet been specified. In this study, seven of the most used accuracy metrics in machine learning were summarized, and both their advantages and disadvantages were studied. To achieve this, the acoustic emission data of damage locations were collected from a pile hit test. A backpropagation artificial neural network prediction model for damage locations was trained with acoustic emission data using six different training algorithms, and the prediction accuracies of six algorithms were evaluated using seven different accuracy metrics. Test results showed that the training algorithm of "TRAINGLM" exhibited the best performance for predicting damage locations in deep piles. Subsequently, the artificial neural networks were trained using three different datasets collected from three acoustic emission sensor groups, and the prediction accuracies of three models were evaluated with the seven different accuracy metrics. The test results showed that the dataset collected from the pile body-installed sensors group exhibited the highest accuracy for predicting damage locations in deep piles. Subsequently, the correlations between the seven accuracy metrics and the sensitivity of each accuracy metrics were discussed based on the analysis results. Eventually, a novel selection method for an appropriate accuracy metric to evaluate the accuracy of specific predictions was proposed. A novel coaxial ducted fan aerial robot with a manipulator is proposed which can achieve some hover operation tasks in a corner environment, such as switching on and off a wall-attached button on the corner. In order to study the aerodynamic interference between the prototype and the environment when the aerial robot is hovering in the corner environment, a method for the comprehensive modeling of the prototype and corner environment based on the artificial neural network is presented. By using the CFD simulation software, the flow field of the prototype at different positions with the corner effect is analyzed. After determining the input, output and structure of the neural network model, the Adam and gradient descent algorithms are selected as the neural network training algorithms, respectively. In addition, to optimize the initial weights and biases of the neural network model, the genetic algorithm is precisely used. The three-dimensional prediction surfaces generated by the three methods of the neural network, kriging surface and the polynomial fitting are compared. In this study, the growing scientific field of alternative biofuels was examined, with respect to hydrochars produced from renewable biomasses. Hydrochars are the solid products of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and their properties depend on the initial biomass and the temperature and duration of treatment. The basic (Scopus) and advanced (Citespace) analysis of literature showed that this is a dynamic research area, with several sub-fields of intense activity. The focus of researchers on sewage sludge and food waste as hydrochar precursors was highlighted and reviewed. It was established that hydrochars have improved behavior as fuels compared to these feedstocks. Food waste can be particularly useful in co-hydrothermal carbonization with ash-rich materials. In the case of sewage sludge, simultaneous P recovery from the HTC wastewater may add more value to the process. For both feedstocks, results from large-scale HTC are practically non-existent. Following the review, related data from the years 2014–2020 were retrieved and fitted into four different artificial neural networks (ANNs). Based on the elemental content, HTC temperature and time (as inputs), the higher heating values (HHVs) and yields (as outputs) could be successfully predicted, regardless of original biomass used for hydrochar production. ANN3 (based on C, O, H content, and HTC temperature) showed the optimum HHV predicting performance (R2 0.917, root mean square error 1.124), however, hydrochars' HHVs could also be satisfactorily predicted by the C content alone (ANN1, R2 0.897, root mean square error 1.289). Uncontrollable ambient conditions are the main factors limiting the self-adaption control of an industrial drying system. To achieve the goal of accurate control of the drying process, the influence of the ambient conditions on the drying behavior should be taken into consideration when modeling the drying process. Present work introduced an industrial drying system with a loading capacity of 50 t, two artificial neural network prediction models with (IANN) and without (OANN) considering the ambient conditions were established using artificial neural network modeling approach. The ambient conditions on the moisture content (MC), exergy efficiency of the heat exchanger (ηex,h) and specific recovered radiant energy (Er) of the drying process were also investigated. The results showed that the ηex,h and Er increase with the increase of ambient temperature while the drying time decrease with the increase of the ambient temperature. The IANN model has a better prediction performance that that of OANN model. An optimal architecture of 9-2-12-3 artificial neuron network model was developed and the best prediction performance of the artificial neural network (ANN) model were found at a training epoch number of 30, and a momentum coefficient of 0.4, where the coefficient of determination of moisture content, exergy efficiency of heat exchanger, and the specific recovered radiant energy, respectively are 0.998, 0.992, and 0.980, indicating that the model has an excellent prediction performance and can be used in engineering practice. This study presents surface roughness modeling for machined parts based on cutting parameters (spindle speed, cutting depth, and feed rate) and machining vibration in the end milling process. Prediction models were developed using multiple regression analysis and an artificial neural network (ANN) modeling approach. To reduce the effect of chatter, machining tests were conducted under varying cutting parameters as defined in the stable regions of the milling tool. The surface roughness and machining vibration level are modeled with nonlinear quadratic forms based on the cutting parameters and their interactions through multiple regression analysis methods, respectively. Analysis of variance was employed to determine the significance of cutting parameters on surface roughness. The results show that the combined effects of spindle speed and cutting depth significantly influence surface roughness. The comparison between the prediction performance of the multiple regression and neural network-based models reveal that the ANN models achieve higher prediction accuracy for all training data with R = 0.96 and root mean square error (RMSE) = 3.0% compared with regression models with R = 0.82 and RMSE = 7.57%. Independent machining tests were conducted to validate the predictive models; the results conclude that the ANN model based on cutting parameters with machining vibration has a higher average prediction accuracy (93.14%) than those of models with three cutting parameters. Finally, the feasibility of the predictive model as the base to develop an online surface roughness recognition system has been successfully demonstrated based on contour surface milling test. Earthquake-induced structural pounding may cause major damages to structures, and therefore it should be prevented. This study is focused on using an artificial neural network (ANN) method to determine the sufficient seismic gap in order to avoid collisions between two adjacent buildings during seismic excitations. Six lumped mass models of structures with a different number of stories (from one to six) have been considered in the study. The earthquake characteristics and the parameters of buildings have been defined as inputs in the ANN analysis. The required seismic gap preventing pounding has been firstly determined for specified structural arrangements and earthquake records. In order to validate the method for other structural parameters, the study has been further extended for buildings with different values of height, mass, and stiffness of each story. Finally, the parametric analysis has been conducted for various earthquakes scaled to different values of the peak ground acceleration (PGA). The results of the verification and validation analyses indicate that the determined seismic gaps are large enough to prevent structural collisions, and they are just appropriate for all different structural arrangements, seismic excitations, and structural parameters. The results of the parametric analysis show that the increase in the PGA of earthquake records leads to a substantial, nearly uniform, increase in the required seismic gap between structures. The above conclusions clearly indicate that the ANN method can be successfully used to determine the minimal distance between two adjacent buildings preventing their collisions during different seismic excitations. Featured Application: Our results can be applied to identifying of students' learning style providing adaptation to e-learning systems. It is possible to classify students according to the manner they recognize, process, and store information. This classification should be considered when developing adaptive e-learning systems. In this work, we propose a method based on deep multi-target prediction algorithm using Felder–Silverman learning styles model to improve students' learning evaluation using feature selection, learning styles models, and multiple target classification. The development of an efficient and accurate hydrological forecasting model is essential for water management and flood control. In this study, the ensemble model was applied to predict the daily discharge; it not only could enhance the algorithm and improve the learning accuracy, but it was also the most effective representative model among various combinations of learning parameters. Using the survey data of Xingshan station in Xiangxi River, China, the suitability of the model was proven. The performance of the ensemble model was compared with the multiple linear regression model and the artificial neural network models. Furthermore, the length of the training samples and the peak value predictions were analyzed. The results showed that, firstly, the best effect of the discharge simulation model appeared in the ensemble model, while the simulation accuracy of the multiple linear regression model was lower than that of the artificial neural network model in some cases. Secondly, the prediction effect of the ensemble model for discharge was better than that of the single model to some extent, whereby the maximum absolute value of relative error was 8.11% using the ensemble model. A comprehensive analysis showed that the ensemble model was optimal. Furthermore, the ensemble model performed outstandingly in terms of hydrological forecasting. The ensemble model also provided theoretical support for hydrological forecasting and could be considered as an alternative to multiple linear regression models and artificial neural networks. An artificial neural network (ANN) was constructed and trained for predicting pressure sensitivity using an experimental dataset consisting of luminophore content and paint thickness as chemical and physical inputs. A data augmentation technique was used to increase the number of data points based on the limited experimental observations. The prediction accuracy of the trained ANN was evaluated by using a metric, mean absolute percentage error. The ANN predicted pressure sensitivity to luminophore content and to paint thickness, within confidence intervals based on experimental errors. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are a valid alternative predictive method to the traditional statistical techniques currently used in many research fields where a massive amount of data is challenging to manage. In environmental analysis, ANNs can analyze pollution sources in large areas, estimating difficult and expensive to detect contaminants from other easily measurable pollutants, especially for screening procedures. In this study, organic micropollutants have been predicted from heavy metals concentration using ANNs. Sampling was performed in an agricultural field where organic and inorganic contaminants concentrations are beyond the legal limits. A critical problem of a neural network design is to select its parametric topology, which can prejudice the reliability of the model. Therefore, it is very important to assess the performance of ANNs when applying different types of parameters of the net. In this work, based on Taguchi L12 orthogonal array, turning experiments were conducted to identify the best parametric set of an ANNs design, considering different combinations of sample number, scaling, training rate, activation functions, number of hidden layers, and epochs. In this study, an artificial neural network is designed and trained to predict the elastic properties of short fiber reinforced plastics. The results of finite element simulations of three-dimensional representative volume elements are used as a data basis for the neural network. The fiber volume fraction, fiber length, matrix-phase properties, and fiber orientation are varied so that the neural network can be used within a very wide range of parameters. A comparison of the predictions of the neural network with additional finite element simulations shows that the stiffnesses of short fiber reinforced plastics can be predicted very well by the neural network. The average prediction accuracy is equal or better than by a two-step homogenization using the classical method of Mori and Tanaka. Moreover, it is shown that the training of the neural network on an extended data set works well and that particularly calculation-intensive data points can be avoided without loss of prediction quality. This work proposes an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) able to provide an accurate forecasting of power produced by photovoltaic (PV) plants. The ANN is customized on the basis of the particular season of the year. An accurate analysis of input variables, i.e., solar irradiance, temperature and air humidity, carried out by means of Pearson Correlation, has allowed to select, day by day, the most suitable set of inputs and ANN architecture also to reduce the necessity of large computational resource. Flooding, a significant natural disaster, attracts worldwide attention because of its high impact on communities and individuals and increasing trend due to climate change. A flood forecast system can minimize the impacts by predicting the flood hazard before it occurs. Artificial neural networks (ANN) could efficiently process large amounts of data and find relations that enable faster flood predictions. The aim of this study is to perform multistep forecasts for 1–5 h after the flooding event has been triggered by a forecast threshold value. In this work, an ANN developed for the real-time forecast of flood inundation with a high spatial resolution (4 m × 4 m) is extended to allow for multiple forecasts. After trained with 120 synthetic flood events, the ANN was first tested with 60 synthetic events for verifying the forecast performance for 3 h, 6 h, 9 h and 12 h lead time. The model produces good results, as shown by more than 81% of all grids having an RMSE below 0.3 m. The ANN is then applied to the three historical flood events to test the multistep inundation forecast. For the historical flood events, the results show that the ANN outputs have a good forecast accuracy of the water depths for (at least) the 3 h forecast with over 70% accuracy (RMSE within 0.3 m), and a moderate accuracy for the subsequent forecasts with (at least) 60% accuracy. Facing the reinforced emission regulations and moving toward a clean powertrain, hydrogen has become one of the alternative fuels for the internal combustion engine. In this study, the prediction methodology of hydrogen yield by on-board fuel reforming under a diesel engine is introduced. An engine dynamometer test was performed, resulting in reduced particulate matter (PM) and NOx emission with an on-board reformer. Based on test results, the reformed gas production rate from the on-board reformer was trained and predicted using an artificial neural network with a backpropagation process at various operating conditions. Additional test points were used to verify predicted results, and sensitivity analysis was performed to obtain dominant parameters. In metal forming, the plastic behavior of metallic alloys is directly related to their formability, and it has been traditionally characterized by simplified models of the flow curves, especially in the analysis by finite element simulation and analytical methods. Tools based on artificial neural networks have shown high potential for predicting the behavior and properties of industrial components. Aluminum alloys are among the most broadly used materials in challenging industries such as aerospace, automotive, or food packaging. In this study, a computer-aided tool is developed to predict two of the most useful mechanical properties of metallic materials to characterize the plastic behavior, yield strength and ultimate tensile strength. These prognostics are based on the alloy chemical composition, tempers, and Brinell hardness. In this study, a material database is employed to train an artificial neural network that is able to make predictions with a confidence greater than 95 % . It is also shown that this methodology achieves a performance similar to that of empirical equations developed expressly for a specific material, but it provides greater generality since it can approximate the properties of any aluminum alloy. The methodology is based on the usage of artificial neural networks supported by a big data collection about the properties of thousands of commercial materials. This article deals with the phenomenon of tool wear prediction in face milling of aluminum matrix composite materials (AMC), class as hard-to-cut materials. Artificial neural networks (ANN) are one of the tools used to predict tool wear or surface roughness in machining. Model development is applicable when regression models do not give satisfactory results. Because of their mechanical properties based on SiC or Al2O3 reinforcement, AMCs are applied in the automotive and aerospace industry. Due to these materials' abrasive nature, a three-edged end mill with diamond coating was selected to carry out milling tests. In this work, multilayer perceptron (MLP) models were used to predict the tool flank wear VBB and tool corner wear VBC during milling of AMC with 10% SiC content. The signals of vibration acceleration and cutting forces were selected as input to the network, and the tests were carried out with three cutting speeds. Based on the analysis of the developed models, the models with the best efficiency were selected, and the quality of wear prediction was assessed. Mechanical damage is recognized as a problem that reduces the performance of oil and gas pipelines and has been the subject of continuous research. The artificial neural network in the spotlight recently is expected to be another solution to solve the problems relating to the pipelines. To this end, supervised learning is employed, and the deep neural network model has four layers with three hidden layers, and the neural network uses the fully connected layer. The burst pressure computed by deep neural network model has been compared with the results of finite element analysis based parametric study, and the burst pressure calculated by the experimental results. According to the comparison results, it showed good agreement. Soot formation in combustion systems is a growing concern due to its adverse environmental and health effects. It is considered to be a tremendously complicated phenomenon which includes multiphase flow, thermodynamics, heat transfer, chemical kinetics, and particle dynamics. Although various numerical approaches have been developed for the detailed modeling of soot evolution, most industrial device simulations neglect or rudimentarily approximate soot formation due to its high computational cost. Developing accurate, easy to use, and computationally inexpensive numerical techniques to predict or estimate soot concentrations is a major objective of the combustion industry. In the present study, a supervised Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technique is applied to predict the soot concentration fields in ethylene/air laminar diffusion flames accurately with a low computational cost. To gather validated data, eight different flames with various equivalence ratios, inlet velocities, and burner geometries are modeled using the CoFlame code (a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) parallel combustion and soot model) and the Lagrangian histories of soot-containing fluid parcels are computed and stored. Then, an ANN model is developed and optimized using the Levenberg-Marquardt approach. Two different scenarios are introduced to validate the network performance; testing the prediction capabilities of the network for the same eight flames that are used to train the network, and for two new flames that are not within the training data set. It is shown that for both of these cases the ANN is able to predict the overall soot concentration field very well with a relatively low integrated error. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In developing countries, energy planning is important in the development planning due to high rates of economic growth and energy demand. However, existing approaches of energy prediction, using gross domestic product, hardly demonstrate how much energy specific regions or cities may need in the future. Thus, this study seeks to predict the amount of energy demand by considering urban growth as a crucial factor for investigating where and how much energy is needed. An artificial neural network is used to forecast energy patterns in Vietnam, which is a quickly developing country and seeks to have an adequate energy supply. Urban growth factors, population, and night-time light intensity are collected as an indicator of energy use. The proposed urban-growth model is trained with data of the years 1995, 2000, 2005, and 2010, and predicts the light distribution in 2015. We validated the model by comparing the predicted result with actual light data to display the spatial characteristics of energy-consumption patterns in Vietnam. In particular, the model with urban growth factors estimated energy consumption more closely to the actual consumption. It is important to correctly predict the microclimate of a greenhouse for control and crop management purposes. Accurately forecasting temperatures in greenhouses has been a focus of research because internal temperature is one of the most important factors influencing crop growth. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are a powerful tool for making forecasts. The purpose of our research was elaboration of a model that would allow to forecast changes in temperatures inside the heated foil tunnel using ANNs. Experimental research has been carried out in a heated foil tunnel situated on the property of the Agricultural University of Krakow. Obtained results have served as data for ANNs. Conducted research confirmed the usefulness of ANNs as tools for making internal temperature forecasts. From all tested networks, the best is the three-layer Perceptron type network with 10 neurons in the hidden layer. This network has 40 inputs and one output (the forecasted internal temperature). As the networks input previous historical internal temperature, external temperature, sun radiation intensity, wind speed and the hour of making a forecast were used. These ANNs had the lowest Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) value for the testing data set (RMSE value = 3.7 °C). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
