The Central Asian region represents an area of strategic significance for India. As an emerging economic and political power with aspirations for global status, India has, particularly since the late 1990s, expanded its horizons beyond the South Asian region and has pursued an active foreign policy of diplomatic and economic engagement with countries in India?s extended neighborhood and beyond. Thus, a decade after the collapse of the Soviet Union during which India was coping with the unraveling of its Cold-War-era non-alignment policy, India has made a strong play for influence in Central Asia. In view of the increased importance attached by Indian leaders to the development of strong political and economic ties between India and the countries of Central Asia, this paper seeks to examine the history of this relationship and project its future trajectory in a period when this particular region is likely to become the scene either of intense rivalry or unprecedented partnerships hinging on the approaches adopted by major powers to each other, and to the countries in the region. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
