Torsional load arising from horizontal load eccentricity has a significant effect on the ultimate horizontal load carrying capacity of tripod bucket foundations in clay. In this paper, the effect of torsional load on the failure mechanism and ultimate horizontal capacity of tripod bucket foundations in undrained clay was studied using 3D finite-element analyses. Three single buckets were connected to form a rigid tripod bucket foundation system. Two different shear strength profiles, that is, uniform and linearly increasing with depth were considered. A detailed parametric study was conducted by varying the bucket spacing and embedment depth to explore the effects of different governing parameters. All the analyses were carried out for smooth and rough interface conditions. The influence of torsion on horizontal capacity is presented in the form of combined horizontal-torsional (H-T) failure envelopes. Reductions in ultimate horizontal capacity with increasing load eccentricity were quantified for the ease of practice. Finally, an expression for estimating combined H-T capacity is provided as a function of normalized spacing and embedment. The serviceability limit of the foundation system plays an important role in the safe long-term performance of a building. Under governing load cases in service life, the building foundation system should satisfy the serviceability limit state, i.e., total and differential settlement criteria. This study investigated the distress of a building through foundation performance assessment incorporating the soil–foundation–structure interaction (SFSI) effects. A spatially variable soil model [zonewise, obtained from field observation and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) study] was used to obtain the settlement of the foundation system. Engineering properties of the subsurface were estimated from the collected soil samples and field tests. ERT result shows the variability of the subsurface layer. A three-dimensional finite-element model of soil, foundations, and structures was developed to estimate the settlement demand of the foundation and structures. The numerical model includes the geometric variability of all the foundations of the building and subsurface variability. Settlement and bearing capacity demand of the foundations were estimated and compared with the standard provisions. Results obtained show that the building foundation system satisfies the serviceability limit of the foundation system under total settlement criteria. However, the differential settlement of the system exceeds the required limit despite considering the SFSI effects, and is one of the major causes of distress to the building. The damage caused by seismic shaking and liquefaction-induced permanent ground deformation has conventionally been assessed as two separate problems often by different engineers. However, the two problems are inherently linked, since ground shaking causes liquefaction, and liquefaction-induced soil softening affects ground shaking. Modelling both problems within a single numerical model is complex for both the engineer and the software, and most finite element software only have the capabilities to address one of them. To improve the estimates of the seismic performance of buildings on liquefiable soil, a new sub-structuring approach is proposed called the macro-mechanism approach. This approach allows the soil-liquefaction-foundation-structure interaction to be considered in a series of sub-models accounting for the major nonlinear mechanisms of the system at a macro level. The proposed approach was implemented in the open-source finite element software OpenSees and then applied to a case study of a building where significant liquefaction- and shaking-induced damage was observed after the 1999 Mw 7.4 Kocaeli Earthquake. The case study building was also simulated using two different commercial software programs, the finite difference software FLAC, and the finite element software PLAXIS, by two different research teams. A comparison between the results from the macro-mechanism approach compared to full numerical models shows that the macro-mechanism approach can capture the extent of the foundation deformation and provide more realistic estimates of the building damage than full approaches since the FLAC and PLAXIS models consider elastic elements for the building. Excavation-induced ground movements can have a detrimental influence on adjacent structures and services. These complex soil–structure interactions are affected by a range of factors such as ground conditions, excavation sequence, and the characteristics of the structures. Considerable prior research has been concerned with understanding the ground response during excavation and in evaluating the potential damage to adjacent facilities. A number of case histories have been reported worldwide. Finite-element analysis can be effective in providing insight into the response of the ground and adjacent structures during the entire construction process. Previous studies have shown that observed excavation behavior (e.g., ground movements and retaining wall deformations) can be captured reasonably well in finite-element analysis, provided that certain key modeling aspects are appropriately addressed. This paper extends a previous deep excavation case study in greenfield conditions (i.e., without adjacent buildings and utilities included in the analysis), focusing particularly on the excavation-induced settlements of nearby buildings and buried pipelines. Sensitivity analyses have been conducted to investigate the effects of several aspects on the computed settlements of buildings and pipelines, such as (1) building weight, (2) building stiffness, (3) building foundation type, (4) ground improvement measures, and (5) geometries and material properties of pipelines. The performance of batter-piled raft systems during seismic events continues to be a major concern. In response, a series of shaking table tests, including vertical and nonvertical configurations, were conducted, and the effects of superstructure frequency and pile angle on the seismic performance of the models were examined under a wide range of accelerations (0.2–0.7 g). Smaller bending moments, horizontal displacements, and rotations were captured for the nonvertical models, so the application of batter piles is reliable under seismic conditions. The maximum bending moment in the vertical models was recorded to be 8 times greater than in the batter piles at the lowest level of ground motion. An increasing number of concrete faces rockfill dams (CFRDs) are being built on deep alluvium foundations. Understanding the behavior of CFRDs that are built on alluvial foundations is critical to the performance assessment and design optimization of these dams. This paper aims to quantitatively study the influence of alluvial foundations on CFRD behavior and discusses the corresponding treatment measures. Four parameters are proposed to describe the distribution characteristics of alluvium foundations. The parameters are related to the mechanical properties of an alluvium foundation, which have practical physical meaning. A series of numerical calculations are performed on the behavior of CFRDs with different alluvium characterization parameters based on a case history. The influence of an alluvium foundation distribution on CFRD behavior is quantitatively analyzed according to the numerical calculations and measured data from case histories. Corresponding treatment measures or suggestions for the dam or foundation are discussed. The findings could offer reliable insights into CFRD behavior on alluvium foundations and provide an engineering analogy or reference for the planning, design, and construction of CFRDs. This paper presents a new method for the nonlinear analysis of rafts resting on multilayered heterogeneous soils using the Vlasov model. The finite-element and the finite-difference methods are employed to solve the governing differential equations for the flexure of the raft and the displacement within the supporting soil mass, respectively. The soil heterogeneity in the vertical direction or in the horizontal directions within each soil layer is considered, and the soil nonlinearity is taken into account through the reduction of the soil shear modulus as a function of strains within the supporting soil mass. Through a comprehensive comparative study, it is found that the present method is validated as reasonable by field measurements and is in good agreement with nonlinear three-dimensional finite-element analysis and other existing analysis methods. A study is carried out to investigate the effect of soil layering, soil nonlinearity, and soil heterogeneity in the vertical direction and in horizontal directions on the raft behavior. It is concluded that neglecting the real conditions of the supporting soils (e.g., soil layering, soil nonlinearity, and soil heterogeneities in the vertical or in horizontal directions) in the analysis of the soil–raft interaction leads to an unrealistic prediction of the raft behavior. Piled raft foundations (PRFs) below stepped high-rise towers are often subjected to nonuniform triangular-shaped loads with eccentricities. In this study, 20 rectangular piled rafts with different pile configurations and orientations, embedded in medium-dense sandy soil, are analyzed using three-dimensional nonlinear finite-element (FE) analysis in which the critical state–based Clay and Sand Model (CASM) is used as the soil constitutive model. Different triangularly distributed loads with and without eccentricities are considered in addition to uniformly distributed loads. A systematic parametric study is performed by varying the different design parameters based on which the PRF behavior is systematically investigated in terms of multiple performance parameters such as maximum settlement, differential settlement, angular distortion, tilt, and load distribution between the raft and the piles and between the individual piles. It is observed that the pile diameter, number of piles, and raft plan area control the differential settlement, angular distortion, and tilt the most. Based on the insights gained from the parametric study, a design optimization exercise is performed, in which the most optimal pile configuration is selected based on the criteria of allowable settlement and angular distortion with additional considerations for tilt, load distribution, and the volume of concrete required. Time-dependent response of piled raft foundations (PRFs) in saturated, normally consolidated and moderately overconsolidated clayey soils under the single-drainage condition is investigated using three-dimensional, elastoplastic finite-element (FE) analysis with the modified cam clay (MCC) soil constitutive model. Four different types of clay (Boston Blue Clay, San Francisco Bay Mud, London Clay, and Shanghai Clay) with different values of overconsolidation ratio (OCR) (OCR=1 , 2, and 5) and 20 different configurations of rectangular PRFs are considered for the study. The settlement response and load sharing of PRFs are investigated. Regression analyses are performed with the FE analysis results to obtain fitted equations for immediate settlement, primary consolidation settlement, and degree of consolidation of PRFs. These equations are applicable to PRFs with cast in situ bored piles similar in size to those considered in this study. The proposed equations can be used to estimate time-dependent PRF settlement in normally consolidated and moderately overconsolidated clay as part of preliminary design calculations. An innovative yet extremely simple approach to reduce the seismic vulnerability of existing buildings on shallow foundations is to remove the lateral contact between the embedded foundation and the surrounding soil. This paper compares the dynamic response of two identical one-degree-of-freedom reduced-scale model sway frames tested in a geotechnical centrifuge. One of the models was founded on fully embedded shallow strip footings, whereas the foundations of the other were disconnected from the soil laterally. Both models were constructed in dry medium density sand whose strength and small strain shear stiffness profiles were obtained by cone penetration and air hammer tests carried out in flight. Various tools were used to monitor the displacements and accelerations both in the structure and in the soil, including micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) accelerometers, piezoelectric accelerometers, LVDTs, and a high-frequency camera. The experimental results demonstrate that the lateral disconnection of the foundation from the adjacent soil significantly reduces the foundation translational and rotational stiffness, which results in a larger predominant period of the structure and a reduction of the absolute floor accelerations obtained for different sinusoidal input signals. The lateral disconnection also mitigates floor drift and story shear forces. The trade-off is the lower radiative damping observed for the laterally disconnected foundation, which results in a larger number of post-earthquake oscillations of the structure. A hand-calculation method for estimation of nonlinear load–settlement response of piled raft foundations (PRFs) embedded in sandy soils is developed using three-dimensional finite-element (FE) analysis in which the elastoplastic constitutive behavior of the soil is modeled using the unified Clay And Sand Model (CASM). Three types of PRFs with rectangular, strip, and circular rafts and with a variety of pile dimensions and arrangements are considered in the study. The PRFs are assumed to be embedded in five different sands (Ottawa sand, Erksak sand, Sacramento sand, Portaway sand, and Decomposed Granite sand) with different elastic properties, critical state parameters, and relative densities. Systematic parametric studies are performed to develop equations for the estimation of the average nonlinear settlement of PRFs. The maximum and differential settlements are also estimated from the average settlement. The proposed equations require the relative density, elastic constants, and critical state friction angle of sand, and the piled raft geometry and properties as inputs. The settlement equations are applicable to PRFs of sizes similar to those considered in the study and can be used by practitioners for quick, initial estimation of PRF settlement as part of design calculations. Time-dependent settlements of piled raft foundations embedded in consolidating clays were studied using three-dimensional (3D) finite-element analysis and critical state-based soil constitutive modified Cam-Clay (MCC) model. In this study, different small to large rectangular rafts connected to circular bored cast-in-situ piles resting on four different types of clays and with varying overconsolidation ratios (OCRs) (1, 2, and 5) for each clay under a single drainage condition were analyzed. The influence of various piled raft parameters (pile length, pile spacing, pile diameter, raft thickness) and soil parameters (Poisson's ratio of soil, soil critical state parameters, stress history of soil or OCR) on immediate and consolidation settlements of piled rafts were investigated. The detailed parametric study shows that critical state parameters and soil elastic properties have important roles in piled raft immediate and consolidation settlements. However, the pattern of parametric influence on immediate settlement and consolidation settlement is different. To capture the total settlement at the end of primary consolidation, a simple and quick calculation method for estimating the average soil subgrade modulus below the piled raft in consolidating clays is proposed through regression analysis and defining a combined influence parameter based on soil parameters, area ratio, and normalized loading. The results of the proposed method were compared with five case studies of piled raft foundations in various normally or overconsolidated clays showing satisfactory matches. It is believed that the proposed method will be very useful for design practitioners to get a quick estimate for the overall settlement of piled raft at the initial design stage. The rigid inclusion technique has been used worldwide to reinforce soft soil for road and railway embankments and deep building foundations. This technique is studied through field tests and physical and numerical models. Most studies focus on embankments or slabs on soils reinforced with rigid inclusions. Previous research based on numerical modeling demonstrated that the load-transfer mechanisms for a rigid slab differ from those for an embankment. Here, a simplified physical model was developed to assess the load-transfer mechanism between the inclusion head and the load-transfer platform (LTP) under a rigid slab. This research focused on the use of an alternative material for the LTP, which is a compacted soil with or without cement. When the reinforced soil contribution is neglected, the LTP weight and applied load are transmitted completely to the inclusion cap (load-transfer efficiency of 100%). As the LTP material stiffness increases, the settlement magnitude decreases considerably. The experiments demonstrated that the applied load was transferred to the inclusion head through an inverted truncated load-transfer cone (LTC) over the inclusion; the external angle depended on the LTP material strength in accordance with Coulomb's theory. Soft soil foundations are often encountered in engineering construction. To make the foundation meet the engineering strength and deformation requirements, the soft soil foundation must be treated. Based on bucket foundation and silt solidification technology, the new grid composite foundation is proposed. The strength improvement mechanism of the new type foundation was analyzed according to the Mohr-Coulomb strength theory, and numerical simulations are used to carry out research on the bearing characteristics of the grid composite foundation. By carrying out load simulations for the grid foundation with different foundation widths, the failure modes corresponding to different B/L were analyzed. With overall consideration of the side length of a solidifying grid, the foundation width, and the undrained shear strength of the soil mass, the calculation method for the bearing capacity of the grid composite foundation has been proposed. Moreover, a wall strength check is carried out according to the maximum pull stress of the solidified wall. In the field test, the results of the finite element simulation and the field test are in good agreement, further verifying the feasibility of the grid structure foundation. Combined piled raft foundation (CPRF) is an effective solution for supporting high-rise constructions. The traditional design philosophy of CPRF does not consider the capacity of foundation based on combined vertical (V), horizontal (H), and moment (M) load. However, V-M-H load acts on the CPRF system concurrently due to the action of wind, wave, earth pressure, and earthquake loading in addition to gravity loading. In this context, the present investigation deals with the effect of combined V-M-H load interaction on the behavior of CPRF in sand and clay, respectively. The response of CPRF under combined loading is obtained using a 3D finite element analysis. First, validation of the numerical model is performed considering the model test results conducted in Agartala sand and another based on the available field test result of Messeturm Tower in Frankfurt clay obtained from the literature. Further, failure and design envelopes for the validated CPRF system are developed considering V-M-H load in both sand and clay deposits attributing a variety of influential system parameters. Simplified expressions for design lateral and moment capacities are proposed based on multiple linear regression analysis. Drainage techniques can be employed to reduce damage of pile rafts in liquefiable ground by decreasing the build-up of excess pore water pressure and maintaining soil stiffness during earthquakes. This paper aims to evaluate the impact of drainage wells on the seismic response of floating piled rafts in fully saturated ground. In practice, floating piles are commonly employed as underpinning elements beneath the raft foundations to reduce undesirable settlement of the raft. Centrifuge experiments were performed on 2 × 2 piled raft foundations with and without drainage wells in mildly sloping ground. Two types of ground involving a uniform sand layer and a uniform sand layer with a superficial gravel layer were reconstructed, whereas the piles were floating within the liquefiable sand. The models were fully instrumented and sine waves were introduced to the models' base at the 80 g centrifugal acceleration. Records of the transducers demonstrate that the drainage wells system significantly decrease the settlement of foundation, dissipation time under dynamic loading by forming closer drainage routes, and excess pore water pressure ratio. In contrary, presence of drainage systems significantly increases the rafts acceleration response, and the bending moment and the axial force of the piles. Results of the piled raft systems in the presence and absence of the drainage wells and the superficial gravel layer are compared with together and also compared with the far-field in terms of the acceleration response, permanent settlement, and excess pore water pressure. This research project focuses on evaluating the influence of Canadian seismic design provisions on the resistance of reinforced concrete buildings against the differential settlement of their foundation. Three types of moment-resisting frame buildings located in Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto were designed in accordance with the latest editions of the [NRCC (National Research Council Canada). 2010. National building code of Canada. Ottawa: National Research Council Canada]. The buildings in each location were designed for three span lengths, namely, 4, 6, and 8 m. A total of nine finite-element models were developed using SAP2000 version 20 with structural element nonlinearity being represented through plastic hinges at the ends of beams and columns. A nonlinear analysis was performed on each model by gradually subjecting a center column to a settlement of 100 mm. The analysis reveals that buildings with a shorter span (e.g., 4 m) length are more vulnerable to settlement-induced damage than buildings with longer spans (e.g., 8 m). Failure of the settling column occurs at settlements that exceed the range of maximum allowable differential settlements prescribed in the Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual. Excavation induces stress changes and soil movement on existing floating piled rafts and elevated pile groups. Limited investigation of the effects of deep excavations has resulted in an incomplete understanding of pile foundation performance at the serviceability state. A series of three-dimensional (3D) centrifuge model tests and numerical simulations are conducted in this study to investigate the influence of raft contact on the response of an existing 2×2 piled raft in comparison to that of an elevated pile group when subjected to an adjacent multipropped deep excavation in dry sand. After rising g , an applied axial load was supported by 18% by the raft and 82% by the piles in the piled raft foundation prior to excavation. Owing to stress release and soil movement caused by the 8-m-deep excavation, the pile head load increased by 21% and 3% for the pile closer to the excavation for the piled raft and pile group foundations, respectively. Analysis of pile–soil relative settlement and raft contact pressure shows that a gap formed between the raft and ground surface in the piled raft, resulting in a load transfer from the raft to the embedded piles. A 20% larger settlement was seen in the piled raft foundation than in the pile group, to further mobilize shaft and end bearing resistances for the maintenance of vertical equilibrium. Recently, few nuclear facilities have been proposed on soil sites worldwide. Controlling the overall and differential settlement is a difficult task for a nuclear structure that rests on a soil site. Under these circumstances, a combined piled–raft foundation (CPRF) provides the required level of performance with a significant cost saving compared with a pile foundation. The combined system involves complexities in the interactions between the soil–pile–raft and superstructure system. The literature focuses on simulating the interactions between pile, soil, and raft. Until recently, the behavior of a CPRF that supported a heavy and massive structure had not been well studied and understood. A combined three-dimensional (3D) model of soil–pile–raft–superstructure systems will be developed in this study that considers the soil and interface nonlinearity along with the complex superstructure geometry. The modeling approach for the piled raft system will be validated using the standard benchmark problem and field case histories. Various aspects of a CPRF for a typical nuclear building (NB) will be investigated, such as the effect of the depth of soil medium, comparison of the behavior of the raft foundation, pile foundation, and CPRF, contact pressure distribution, pile behavior, soil behavior; and various performance indicators. The presented systematic procedure to configure the CPRF system could be useful in similar practical applications. This study indicated that the stiffening of the superstructure and sequential construction has a beneficial effect on the combined system. This paper investigates the response of framed buildings on raft foundations to tunnel construction using geotechnical centrifuge testing. Five framed building models were considered, and the influence of building configuration, weight, eccentricity, and soil density were evaluated. Soil and foundation displacements, frame deformed shape, maximum structure deformation parameters (deflection ratios and angular distortions), and associated modification factors are illustrated. Results indicate that unlike equivalent isotropic plates, framed buildings primarily exhibit shear behavior and a semi-flexible response. Building deformed shapes indicate that angular/shear distortions (considering bay slope and local tilt) are more appropriate for quantifying framed building distortions than deflection ratios. A relative stiffness parameter is suggested to relate maximum angular distortions to the greenfield settlement slope. Moreover, the efficiency of the available relative stiffness parameters for the deflection ratio modification factors is confirmed. Ultrahigh-performance concrete (UHPC) offers significant potential to address a variety of needs in bridge design, construction, and performance enhancement. Bridge owners have shown willingness to embrace novel solutions that could address specific challenges related to the cost, speed of construction, durability, and service life of their projects. There are hundreds of bridges worldwide that, largely in the past decade, have utilized UHPC. These applications range from minor field-cast closures to precast segments for long-span bridges to kilometer-long bridge deck overlays on a signature structure. The objective of this paper is to promote the application of this class of cementitious material in bridge engineering by presenting the progress that has been made in different regions of the world in the past two decades. Today, UHPC is being widely used in Malaysia to design and construct many bridges of different types and spans as they build out their roadway network. In South Korea, the unique characteristics of UHPC are being utilized to advance the state-of-the-art in long-span bridges. The French were early adopters and pioneers in building a strong foundation for using UHPC in a variety of bridge applications. In Switzerland, UHPC is employed to address major bridge rehabilitation needs. The United States bridge sector has embraced UHPC for a variety of field-cast connections. Current research and development efforts are promoting the use of UHPC in major rehabilitation projects and construction of primary bridge components. The adoption of UHPC solutions into the bridge sector is progressing rapidly because of the unique opportunities provided by the strength and durability of the material. A new simplified approach based on the pseudostatic method of analysis is proposed to investigate the response of a combined pile–raft foundation (CPRF) and a group pile considering the complex interaction. In this method, the raft is considered as a plate supported by group of piles and soil, where piles are modeled as Euler beam elements resting on elastic Winkler foundation and the raft is divided into square grids attached with horizontal springs. The reliability of the proposed method is verified by laboratory testing results and those of Plaxis3D simulations for a 4-piled raft system. Good agreement between the laboratory results, numerical simulations, and the proposed method is demonstrated, showing the potential applicability of the new simplified method. Planning of construction technical specifications (CTS) for deep foundations is critical for ensuring works performed safely. k-nearest neighbors (kNN) is regarded as a practical algorithm for case retrieval in a case-based reasoning (CBR) cycle to search for past similar plans for new plan making. The parameter k and neighbors' weights affect the performance of the CBR cycle deeply but kNN neglects the weights' effect on case retrieval. The massive and multisource data of CTS of deep foundations presents a challenge for retaining case data in a database and for decision making due to an inefficient data process of the traditional tool. This paper presents a new framework to integrate weighted k-nearest neighbors (kkNN) to improve the performance of a CBR system for technical planning of deep foundations. It contains two parts: (1) a process to deal with a large amount of data derived from CTS; and (2) kkNN to obtain similar cases considering k and the weights of neighbors'. The feasibility of the proposed approach is validated through a case study and the evaluation result shows that the approach enhances the performance of the CBR cycle in creating construction technical specifications in deep foundation projects. In this study, the uplift load-carrying capacity of micropiles was investigated, focusing on the effect of various installation conditions including installation angle (θ), spacing (S), and group configuration. For this purpose, a series of uplift model load tests was conducted using single micropiles (SMP) and group micropiles (GMP). The uplift load capacity of both SMP and GMP increased with θ up to 30° but decreased for a higher installation angle of θ = 45°. Micropile spacing had less effect on the uplift load capacity for GMP. The uplift loadcarrying mechanism of inclined micropiles is proposed based on decomposed axial and lateral loads and resistance components. Based on the proposed load-carrying mechanism, axial and lateral load capacity ratios were proposed and adopted to formulate the uplift load-capacity equation for inclined micropiles. For GMP, the group-effect factor was proposed based on the reduction effect of group micropiles on the overall uplift load capacity. Full-scale uplift load tests were conducted to check the validity of the proposed method. Both SMP and GMP were constructed and tested. Unreinforced masonry walls subjected to out-of-plane horizontal bending can fail by two alternate modes: stepped failure along the brick-mortar bond, or line failure cutting directly through the bricks. Because of random variations in material properties throughout a panel and the tendency for failure to occur across the weaker elements, vertical cracks will generally exhibit a combination of the two modes. This paper develops a pair of analytical methodologies that treat this phenomenon using a stochastic approach. The first part deals with calculating the ultimate moment capacity by allowing for the weakening effect associated with the mixed (stepped and line) mode of failure. This effect is quantified in terms of strength-reduction factors for mean and characteristic (0.05 quantile) values of strength, which may be applied toward generic ultimate strength design. The second part deals with estimating the relative probability of each failure mode and the probability distribution for the relative proportions of each failure mode along a crack. This study investigates the influence of soil–structure interaction (SSI) on period and damping of steel moment-resisting frame buildings supported by shallow footings on dry sand deposits. A series of impact hammer tests were conducted on a 3-story and a 6-story model steel frame for this purpose. Different base conditions (e.g., loose and dense sand beds, surface and embedded footings, heavily loaded and lightly loaded footings) were considered to gain a complete understanding of inertial SSI effects. Experimental results were compared with FEMA provisions as well as with analytical results obtained from a finite-element model. The period and damping amplifications are more prominent in the case of the 3-story building than in that of the 6-story building, indicating more sensitivity of short and stiff buildings to SSI over the taller ones. For a heavily loaded 3-story building on loose sand, the period and damping amplifications are 21 and 330%, respectively. The main objective of this paper is to establish a complete analytical solution concerning the linear pressure distribution under rigid rectangular spread footings. An eccentricity diagram is developed to map the unique footing deformations and compression zones in each one of five distinct regions. For each region, the linear soil pressure, neutral axis position, and pressure values at the four corners are expressed in closed forms. The accuracy and consistency of the explicit expressions are verified by presenting several special boundary cases, whereas the physical interpretation is brought out by analyzing the eccentricity diagram. A generic nomogram providing the maximum soil pressure is also formed to promote efficient structural footing design. The developed analytical formulas for responses and resultants enable algorithmic implications without iterations and offer high computational efficiency. Proper examples, generated via developed computer software, exhibit how the theoretical content of this article is applied in practice. The software enables three-dimensional (3D) viewing of the deformed and undeformed physical and mathematical model of the structure, allowing detailed visual inspection of the results. Loss of support as a result of voids underneath concrete slabs can initiate and propagate slab cracking in jointed plain concrete pavements. This paper investigates the hypothesis that foundation voiding occurs because of localized plastic deformation of the depressurized foundation as a result of slab curling and repeated application of traffic loads. Plane strain and three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear finite-element models of the subgrade foundation are presented. The analysis shows that voids underneath concrete slabs usually occur along the edge of slabs adjacent to the shoulder. The sizes of voids are primarily determined by foundation properties (cohesion stress and internal friction angle), slab properties, axle loads, and temperature gradients. Voids along the edge of slabs adjacent to the shoulder lead to high transverse tensile stresses on the top surface, which may result in top-down longitudinal cracking close to the outer wheel path. These same voids increase the longitudinal tensile stresses on the bottom surface at the edge of the slabs, which can increase the potential for bottom-up transverse cracking at the middle of the slabs. This paper proposes an efficient hybrid approach for analysis of the responses of piled-raft foundations subjected to coupled loads (combination of vertical loads, horizontal loads, and moments) in layered soils. The proposed method comprehensively accounts for pile-pile, pile-soil surface, soil surface-pile, and soil surface-soil surface interactions. Moreover, to capture the influence of embedment and active/passive effects of piles, a modified Vesic's subgrade modulus for embedded piles and passive piles was adopted. To avoid a large number of time-consuming integration processes, the shear displacement method and elastic foundation beam method were employed to calculate the vertical and horizontal responses of a single pile, respectively, and the results were then extended for the pile group. The results calculated with the proposed method for piled-raft foundations in layered soils were found to have good agreement with those obtained from the more rigorous finite-element methods (FEMs) and elastic theory method in layered soils. Stone columns are a popular formof ground improvement that can be applied to a variety of foundation solutions involving soft soil deposits. Many design methods are based on an assumption that columns with a length-to-diameter ratio greater than 4 bulge uniformly along their length. This mode of deformation is not valid for small groups of columns in which interaction between individual columns and the footing gives rise to more complex behavior. The deformational behavior of stone columns at serviceability limit state is of utmost importance, because settlement rather than bearing capacity criteria are generally more onerous in soft soils. The results of some high-quality laboratory studies have been informative in this respect, but the extrapolation of results from small-scale tests comes with the caveats associated with single-gravity laboratory testing. The FEM, in combination with advanced constitutive models, can provide a link between the deformational behavior and settlement performance of discrete column groups at working stress levels. A series of analyses was conducted to examine the influence of key design parameters such as column length, spacing, and the number of columns. The influence of a stiff crust was also examined, because the reference soil profile adopted for these analyses was that of the well-characterized Bothkennar test site. The following three modes of deformation were identified by examining the distribution of stress and strain within columns and the surrounding soil: individual punching, block punching, and bulging. Individual and block punching developed in short or closely spaced columns, whereas block punching was more prevalent in larger groups. Bulging develops in long, widely spaced columns and generally occurs at the point of lowest lateral restraint. In addition, novel parameters referred to as compression and punching ratios were developed to validate the in-depth analysis and identify the principal design parameters that influence the behavior of small groups of stone columns. The results indicate that the mode of deformation is governed by column spacing and length rather than the number of columns. This finding is important, because it indicates that settlement design methods that are developed for large groups of columns are applicable to discrete groups at similar spacings and lengths. Model testing for soft soil foundations with and without a prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) was performed to assess the consolidation and long-term performance of PVDs. Surface settlements and excess pore-water pressures at different depths were monitored throughout the applied multistage loading. Classical methods with improved solutions that considered variations in the discharge capacity and non-Darcian flow were applied via a back-analysis of the consolidation results. Parameters related to the smear effect and well resistance were discussed in these solutions. It was found that the foundation improved with PVD had an approximately 20% increase in the total degree of consolidation compared with untreated soft soil foundations; the well resistance of the PVD system not only existed but it also changed over time; the average discharge capacity in the model test under multistage loading condition was far less than the reported value; and the advanced solutions, especially the solution that considered the varied discharge capacity (with qw0 = 3 cm³/s and Aw = 4.12 × 10-6 1/s), gained a better fitting result than the classical solution. In the present paper, the response of cylindrical storage tank foundation resting on stone column-reinforced ground has been studied considering the separation between the bottomraft and ground under liftoff condition. The bottomraft of the tank is idealized by a circular plate. The stone column-reinforced ground ismodeled as a tensionless foundation. Soft foundation soil and granular fill are idealized as a spring-dashpot element and Pasternak shear layer, respectively. Stone columns are modeled as stiff nonlinear springs. The stone columns are converted into equivalent concentric rings with one stone column at the center to simulate the axisymmetric condition for the analysis. The governing differential equations are derived fromthe classical theory of thin plate and solved using the finite-difference technique. A parametric study is performed to investigate the differences between the response of tensionless and conventional elastic foundation systems. It is observed that tensionless foundation idealization is essential to analyze the liftoff and avoid erroneous design of the raft for the cylindrical storage tank. Monopiles are the most commonly used foundation type for offshore wind turbine (OWT) structures and are characterized by relatively large geometric dimensions, compared with offshore pile foundations typically used in the oil and gas industries. To date, there are no established technical guidelines tailored for the design and analysis of OWT monopiles. This paper first identifies various intrinsic drawbacks involved with the existing design and analysis methodologies as applied to OWT monopiles. Next, a comprehensive experimental program of 1g repeated lateral load tests, performed on a scaled rigid monopile installed in dry sand beds, is presented to investigate its behavior under various loading scenarios. The experimental results provide insights into the various blurry issues in the existing literature related to monopile behavior under long-term repeated lateral loading. Lateral soil resistance profiles were determined from the measured pile bending strain data and found to be markedly dependent on the degree of the polynomial function used for curve-fitting of the bending strain data. Finally, an experimental model is presented for estimation of the pile's accumulated rotation, which takes into account various basic characteristics of the applied lateral load cycles. This paper presents a case study of applying a new device termed deformation adjustor in piled raft foundations to support a highrise building. The deformation adjustors are mounted on a pile head to optimize load distribution of a piled raft foundation so that a relatively uniform foundation deformation can be achieved in complicated load, construction, and soil conditions. In this case study, the project site is located in a coastal city in China, featuring complicated subsurface soil conditions with abundant large boulders. The project was put on hold for a decade because in the complicated soil conditions the piles could not be installed to the required depths. The project resumed with introduction of deformation adjustors which helped to shift the applied loads from piles to subsoil below the raft and thus considerably reduced the pile lengths. This case study describes the preliminary design of pile-raft foundations with deformation adjustors, followed by a comprehensive monitoring program for settlements, earth pressures, and pile top reaction forces during and after building construction. Based on the long-term monitoring, subsoil below the raft was able to bear 83% of total applied loads, whereas the piles carried 17% of the loads. Based on this case study, deformation adjustors were proved to be an effective and economical solution for piled raft foundations to support high-rise buildings in complicated subsurface conditions. The combined pile-raft foundation (CPRF) has been widely recognized as economic and rational foundation for high-rise buildings when subjected to vertical loading because of its effectiveness in load sharing by both raft and pile components. This results in smaller total and differential settlements with a reduced number of piles as compared with group piles. Until recently, the behavior of CPRF when subjected to lateral and real earthquake loading conditions in addition to vertical loads has not been well understood as a result of the complexities involved in the interaction of the pile, soil, and raft under such loading considerations. In the present study, an attempt has been made to investigate the behavior of CPRF with the use of centrifuge testing and a numerical model under pseudostatic and dynamic loading conditions carried out with finite-element software. After successful validation of the present CPRF model with both centrifuge and numerical model results, the same model was used for further study under El-Centro 1979, Loma Prieta 1989, Bhuj 2001 and Sikkim 2011 real earthquake pseudostatic loading and real acceleration-time history. The maximum displacement and bending moment were observed at the pile head, which is attributable to the rigid fixity of the piles with the raft. The crossover point in the bending moment profile was observed at shallow depths for all cases of loading. The occurrence of the resonance condition that yielded maximum horizontal displacement of the CPRF as a result of one of the input motions is also highlighted in the present study. The difference in the response of soil just below the raft of the CPRF and at the far field indicated that near-field and far-field ground motions were not in tandem. A case study on an existing CPRF of Messeturm Tower, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, is also presented. The existing CPRF of Messeturm Tower was modeled and analyzed under static and pseudostatic loading conditions. Obtained results show good correlation with the static field-measured results. Results in terms of bending moment in piles, total settlements, and normalized lateral displacement (u/D) are reported. Piles have been used to transfer superstructure (bridges, buildings, etc.) loads to deeper competent bearing strata to minimize settlements. Accurate predictions of design settlements of vertically loaded piles under working load are a critical issue in the design of pile foundations. Numerous comprehensive trials, built on a regression-based predictive formula that produces the axial settlement using elastic shortening as the input variable, were performed in this study, and a simple relationship was established between the elastic shortening of piles and the measured design settlements of 93 full-scale pile load tests installed in variable bearing materials. The calculated axial settlements of piles from the proposed method in this study were compared to the measured axial settlements of the piles. Accuracy and validity of the proposed method were verified through conventional statistical analysis in terms of mean of bias (λm) and coefficient of variation (μ). Bridge scour is the number one cause of failure in bridges located over waterways. Scour leads to rapid losses in foundation stiff- ness and can cause sudden collapse. Previous research on bridge health monitoring has used changes in natural frequency to identify damage in bridge beams. The possibility of using a similar approach to identifying scour is investigated in this paper. To assess if this approach is feasible, it is necessary to establish how scour affects the natural frequency of a bridge, and if it is possible to measure changes in frequency using the bridge dynamic response to a passing vehicle. To address these questions, a novel vehicle--bridge--soil interaction (VBSI) model was developed. By carrying out a modal study in this model, it is shown that for a wide range of possible soil states, there is a clear reduction in the natural frequency of the first mode of the bridge with scour. Despite the major advances in finite-element (FE) modeling and system identification (SI) of extended infrastructures, soil compliance and damping at the soil--foundation interface are not often accurately accounted for due to the associated computational demand and the inherent uncertainty in defining the dynamic stiffness. This paper aims to scrutinize the effect of soil conditions in the SI process and to investigate the efficiency of advanced FE modeling in representing the superstructure--soil--foundation stiffness. For this purpose, measured, computed, and experimentally identified natural frequencies of a real bridge were used. Field measurements obtained during construction were reproduced both in the laboratory and by refined FE modeling. In addition, to understand the physical problem more thoroughly, three alternative soil conditions were examined: rock, stabilized soil, and Hostun sand. Discrepancies on the order of 3-13% were observed between the identified and the numerically predicted natural frequencies. These discrepancies highlight the importance of reliable estimation of soil properties and compliance with the SI framework for extended bridges under ambient and low-amplitude vibrations.
