In the literature, it is well known that there is a bidirectional causality between economic growth and energy consumption. This is why it is crucial to forecast energy consumption. In this study, four deep learning models, i.e., Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), stacked LSTM, bidirectional LSTM, and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), were used to forecast energy consumption in Brazil, Canada, and France. After a training test period, the performance evaluation criterion, i.e., R2, mean square error, root mean square error, mean absolute error, and mean absolute percentage error, was performed for the performance measure. It showed that GRU is the best model for Canada and France, while LSTM is the best model for Brazil. Therefore, the energy consumption prediction was made for the 12 months of the year 2017 using LSTM for Brazil and GRU for Canada and France. Based on the selected model, it was projected that the energy consumption in Brazil was 38 597.14–38 092.88, 63 900–4 800 000 GWh in Canada, and 50 999.72–32 747.01 GWh in France in 2017. The projected consumption in Canada was very high due to the country's higher industrialization. As part of the Agence Nationale de Recherche Caractérisation des ENvironnements SonorEs urbains (Characterization of urban sound environments) project, a questionnaire was sent in January 2019 to households in a 1 km2 study area in the city of Lorient, France, to which about 318 responded. The main objective of this questionnaire was to collect information about the inhabitants' perception of the sound environments in their neighborhoods, streets, and dwellings. In the same study area, starting mid-2019, about 70 sensors were continuously positioned, and 15 of them were selected for testing sound source recognition models. The French lockdown due to the COVID-19 crisis occurred during the project, and the opportunity was taken to send a second questionnaire during April 2020. About 31 of the first 318 first survey respondents answered this second questionnaire. This unique longitudinal dataset, both physical and perceptual, allows the undertaking of an analysis from different perspectives of such a period. The analysis reveals the importance of integrating source recognition tools, soundscape observation protocol, in addition to physical level analysis, to accurately describe the changes in the sound environment. Considering a broadband motionless source in a waveguide with a depth that varies with time, the time-frequency representation of the acoustic intensity shows a striation pattern than can be explained using the depth-frequency waveguide invariant. This phenomenon is used here to describe acoustic data recorded in the Iroise Sea, where intense tides occur. The originality of this study is that the acoustic data consist of only ambient noise. The best hypothesis is that these striations are created by distant marine traffic in the Bay of Brest, and the results suggest that tide height can be monitored using long-term passive acoustics. Second-language (L2) speech perception studies have demonstrated effects of language background and consonantal context on categorization and discrimination of vowels. The present study examined the effects of language experience and consonantal context on the production of Parisian French (PF) vowels by American English (AE) learners of French. Native AE speakers repeated PF vowels /i-y-u-œ-a/ in bilabial /bVp/ and alveolar /dVt/ contexts embedded in the phrase /raCVCa/. Three AE groups participated: speakers without French experience (NoExp), speakers with formal French experience (ModExp), and speakers with formal-plus-immersion experience (HiExp). Production accuracy was assessed by native PF listeners’ judgments and by acoustic analysis. PF listeners identified L2 learners’ productions more accurately when the learners had extensive language experience, although /y-u-œ/ by even HiExp speakers were frequently misidentified. A consonantal context effect was evident, including /u/ produced by ModExp misidentified more often in alveolar context than in bilabial, and /y/ misidentified more often in bilabial than in alveolar context, suggesting cross-language transfer of coarticulatory rules. Overall, groups distinguished front rounded /y/ from /u/ in production, but often in a non-native manner, e.g., producing /y/ as /ju/. A tidal bore is a sharp rise in free-surface elevation propagating upstream in an estuarine system at the leading edge of the flood tide. It generates a powerful noise that was sometimes compared to the sounds of a horse cavalcade. Herein the sounds generated by a tidal bore event in the Baie du Mont Saint Michel were carefully recorded. The data showed three distinct periods. These were the incoming tidal bore when the sound amplitude increased with the approaching bore front, the passage of the tidal bore in front of the microphone where the impacts of the bore on the bank, rocks, or jetty generated powerful noises, and the upstream propagation of the bore when the flood flow motion caused additional loud noises. During the arrival of the tidal bore, the sound levels were less energetic and a lower-pitch sound was noted than during the subsequent record. For the breaking bore process, the analysis of the sound record indicated a dominant frequency around 76–77 Hz. The low-pitch rumble had a frequency comparable to the collective bubble oscillations, suggesting that air entrapment in the bore roller might play a major role in the acoustic signature. French listeners perceive illegal /tl/ and /dl/ clusters as legal /kl/ and /gl/, suggesting that /dl, tl/ undergo “phonotactic perceptual assimilation” to the phonetically most similar permissible clusters [Hallé et al., J. Exp. Psychol. Hum. Percept. Perform. (1998)]. However, without a comparison to native speakers of a language allowing initial /tl, dl/, other explanations remain open (e.g., universal phonetic biases). Experiment 1 compared native French and Hebrew listeners on perception of Hebrew /tl/-/kl/ and /dl/-/gl/. On a language-specific phonotactics account, these contrasts should be difficult for listeners whose language disallows initial /tl, dl/ while allowing /kl, gl/ (French), but not for listeners whose language permits all four clusters (Hebrew). Indeed, French but not Hebrew listeners showed difficulty discriminating /tl/-/kl/, and tended to categorize the initial consonant of /tl/ as /k/; analogous effects for /dl/-/gl/ were weaker. Experiment 2 tested speakers of American English, which also disallows initial /tl, dl/ but realizes stop-voicing differently than French or Hebrew, to examine possible contributions of language-specific phonetic settings. Their performance was similar to that of French listeners, though they had significantly greater difficulty with /dl-/gl/. This paper investigates the coordination between the jaw, the tongue tip, and the lower lip during repetition with rate increase of labial-to-coronal (L(a)C(o)) consonant-vowel-consonant-vowel disyllables (e.g., /pata/) and coronal-to-labial (C(o)L(a)) ones (e.g., /tapa/) by French speakers. For the two types of disyllables: (1) the speeding process induces a shift from two jaw cycles per disyllable to a single cycle; (2) this shift modifies the coordination between the jaw and the constrictors, and (3) comes with a progression toward either a L(a)C(o) attractor [e.g., (/pata/ or /tapa/) --> /patá/ --> /ptá/] or a C(o)L(a) one (e.g., /pata/ or /tapa/ --> /tapá/ --> /tpá/). Yet, (4) the L(a)C(o) attractor is clearly favored regardless of the initial sequencing. These results are interpreted as evidence that a L(a)C(o) CVCV disyllable could be a more stable coordinative pattern for the lip-tongue-jaw motor system than a C(o)L(a) one. They are discussed in relation with the so-called LC effect that is the preference for L(a)C(o) associations rather than C(o)L(a) ones in CV.CV disyllables in both world languages and infants' first words.

This paper applies the concept of optimal boundary control for solving inverse problems in shallow water acoustics. To treat the controllability problem, a continuous analytic adjoint model is derived for the Claerbout wide-angle parabolic equation (PE) using a generalized nonlocal impedance boundary condition at the water-bottom interface. While the potential of adjoint methodology has been recently demonstrated for ocean acoustic tomography, this approach combines the advantages of exact transparent boundary conditions for the wide-angle PE with the concept of adjoint-based optimal control. In contrast to meta-heuristic approaches the inversion procedure itself is directly controlled by the waveguide physics and, in a numerical implementation based on conjugate gradient optimization, many fewer iterations are required for assessment of an environment that is supported by the underlying subbottom model. Furthermore, since regularization schemes are particularly important to enhance the performance of full-field acoustic inversion, special attention is devoted to the application of penalization methods to the adjoint optimization formalism. Regularization incorporates additional information about the desired solution in order to stabilize ill-posed inverse problems and identify useful solutions, a feature that is of particular importance for inversion of field data sampled on a vertical receiver array in the presence of measurement noise and modeling uncertainty. Results with test data show that the acoustic field and the bottom properties embedded in the control parameters can be efficiently retrieved.

Previous research by Dupoux et al. [J. Memory Lang. 36, 406-421 (1997)] has shown that French participants, as opposed to Spanish participants, have difficulties in distinguishing nonwords that differ only in the location of stress. Contrary to Spanish, French does not have contrastive stress, and French participants are "deaf" to stress contrasts. The experimental paradigm used by Dupoux et al. (speeded ABX) yielded significant group differences, but did not allow for a sorting of individuals according to their stress "deafness." Individual assessment is crucial to study special populations, such as bilinguals or trained monolinguals. In this paper, a more robust paradigm based on a short-term memory sequence repetition task is proposed. In five French-Spanish cross-linguistic experiments, stress "deafness" is shown to crucially depend upon a combination of memory load and phonetic variability in F0. In experiments 3 and 4, nonoverlapping distribution of individual results for French and Spanish participants is observed. The paradigm is thus appropriate for assessing stress deafness in individual participants.

This paper deals with the perception of French natural stop bursts and with the role played by the following vowel in this perception. The first experiment verified the ability of listeners to identify long stimuli containing the burst and part of the subsequent vowel. The second and third experiments investigated the identification of stop bursts with and without a priori knowledge of the following vowel. In order to determine the discriminating power of spectral characteristics of the burst, these experiments used fixed-length burst stimuli of 25-ms duration with all traces of vocalic segment cut off. The bursts of initial voiceless stops were extracted from CVC isolated words. The burst provided very reliable information about stop place since listeners identified correctly 87% of the stops, without a priori knowledge of the following vowel. Performance however was context-dependent. Knowing the identity of the vowel led to a slight but statistically significant improvement in stop identification. Nevertheless, the effects of this knowledge were selective and varied with context. Finally, the first experiment proved that a near perfect identification of stops can be achieved only when all main cues (burst spectrum, burst duration, and onset of vocalic formant transitions) were present simultaneously.
