School absences can negatively impact a child's schooling, including the loss of teacher-led lessons, peer interactions, and, ultimately, academic achievement. However, little is known about the long-term consequences of school absences for overall educational attainment and labour market outcomes. In this paper, we used data from the 1970 British Cohort Study to examine long-term associations between school absences in late childhood and individuals' educational attainment, social class, unemployment and earnings at age 42 while adjusting for a comprehensive set of confounders. Our findings show that school absences are associated with lower educational attainment but are not associated with social class destination except for increasing the likelihood of being out of the labour force after adjusting for confounders. Individuals who missed five days of school at age 10 were 5.2% more likely to have obtained no qualifications and 4.1% more likely to be out of the labour force. However, we did not find a significant association between school absences and individuals' earnings or duration of unemployment. Our findings suggest that the detrimental consequences of school absences persist beyond schooling into adulthood. Overall, this study highlights the importance of addressing school absenteeism to promote educational and labour market participation over the life course.

The purpose of this study was to determine which of the input and output variables made a statistically significant difference in the efficiency status of undergraduate departments offering Health Management education in Turkey, to identify areas where inefficient departments could improve, and to determine which of the input and output variables made a statistically significant difference in the efficiency status of inefficient departments. The output-oriented data envelopment analysis model was employed in the efficiency analysis. As a decision-making unit, there were 43 Health Management departments. Mann-Whitney U test was used to analyse whether or not there was a statistically significant difference between the efficiencies of the departments based on the input and output variables. In Turkey, 15 of 43 state universities providing formal undergraduate education in the field of Health Management are fully efficient. Also, there was a significant difference in terms of the "number of completed projects" and the "number of papers in journals screened within the scope of Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC)" variables. No study examining the efficiency of Health Management departments has been found in the literature. Department administrators are encouraged to increase their publications and look into ways to design more initiatives.

Likert-type item is the most popular response format for collecting data in social, educational, and psychological studies through scales or questionnaires. However, there is no consensus on whether parametric or non-parametric tests should be preferred when analyzing Likert-type data. This study examined the statistical power of parametric and non-parametric tests when each Likert-type item was analyzed independently in survey studies. The main purpose of the study is to examine the statistical power of Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney, Welch's t, and Student's t tests for Likert-type data, which are pairwise comparison tests. For this purpose, a Monte Carlo simulation study was conducted. The statistical significance of the selected tests was examined under the conditions of sample size, group size ratio, and effect size. The results showed that the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test was superior to its counterparts, especially for small samples and unequal group sizes. However, the Student's t-test for Likert-type data had similar statistical power to the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test under conditions of equal group sizes when the sample size was 200 or more. Consistent with the empirical results, practical recommendations were provided for researchers on what to consider when collecting and analyzing Likert-type data.

Using data from multiple informants has long been considered best practice in education. However, multiple informants often disagree on similar constructs, complicating decision-making. Polynomial regression and response-surface analysis (PRA) is often used to test the congruence effect between multiple informants on an outcome. However, PRA assumes the congruence effect on the outcome is homogeneous across individuals. To investigate unknown heterogeneity in the congruence effect, we introduce polynomial regression mixture modeling (PRMix). We demonstrate how PRMix enhances congruence research by allowing researchers to investigate individual differences in the congruence effect. The differential congruence effects between latent classes are illustrated with response-surface plots. We provide practical suggestions for using PRMix and discuss future research directions in methodology.

The 0.05 boundary within Null Hypothesis Statistical Testing (NHST) "has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move" (to quote Douglas Adams). Here, we move past meta-scientific arguments and ask an empirical question: What is the psychological standing of the 0.05 boundary for statistical significance? We find that graduate students in the psychological sciences show a "boundary effect" when relating p-values across 0.05. We propose this psychological boundary is learned through statistical training in NHST and reading a scientific literature replete with "statistical significance". Consistent with this proposal, undergraduates do not show the same sensitivity to the 0.05 boundary. Additionally, the size of a graduate student's boundary effect is not associated with their explicit endorsement of questionable research practices. These findings suggest that training creates distortions in initial processing of p-values, but these might be dampened through scientific processes operating over longer timescales.

The performance of White students and Hispanic students from California, Texas, and Arizona on the advanced placement (AP) biology exam was compared using archival data from the College Board from 2016 through 2019. Pearson Chi-square tests yielded statistically significant differences in all 4 year comparisons of white and Hispanic students in all three states. White students from California had the highest percentage of students earn a 3 or higher for all 4 years, Arizona had the second highest percentage of white students earn a 3 or higher for all 4 years, and Texas had the lowest percentage of white students earn a 3 or higher for all 4 years of comparison. Hispanic students from Arizona had the highest percentage of students earn a 3 or higher for all 4 years, California had the second highest percentage of Hispanic students earn a 3 or higher for all 4 years, and Texas had the lowest percentage of Hispanic students earn a 3 or higher for all 4 years of comparison. It was discovered a majority of White students who took an AP biology exam, from 2016 to 2019, earned a passing score (3 or higher), while the majority of Hispanic students who took an AP Biology exam failed to earn a passing score (3 or higher), that would result in college credit. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Early intervention efforts have been effective in reducing disruptive behaviors and the probability of poor developmental outcomes. Early interventions include common practice elements to improve social functioning and decrease problem behaviors that disrupt the teaching-learning process. The First Step Next intervention has been well validated across early childhood and early elementary settings. In the present article, we provide a best-evidence synthesis of five randomized controlled replication studies between 2009 and 2021. Collectively, these studies show the intervention has resulted in small to large effect sizes and statistically significant improvements, compared with students randomized to control conditions, on multiple indicators of prosocial and problem behavior. The current synthesis focuses on a range of outcomes across elementary and preschool populations, as well as implementation fidelity and social validity ratings, to help school professionals in determining whether First Step Next might be useful in their efforts to support students at risk of school failure.

To detect differential item functioning (DIF), Rasch trees search for optimal split-points in covariates and identify subgroups of respondents in a data-driven way. To determine whether and in which covariate a split should be performed, Rasch trees use statistical significance tests. Consequently, Rasch trees are more likely to label small DIF effects as significant in larger samples. This leads to larger trees, which split the sample into more subgroups. What would be more desirable is an approach that is driven more by effect size rather than sample size. In order to achieve this, we suggest to implement an additional stopping criterion: the popular Educational Testing Service (ETS) classification scheme based on the Mantel-Haenszel odds ratio. This criterion helps us to evaluate whether a split in a Rasch tree is based on a substantial or an ignorable difference in item parameters, and it allows the Rasch tree to stop growing when DIF between the identified subgroups is small. Furthermore, it supports identifying DIF items and quantifying DIF effect sizes in each split. Based on simulation results, we conclude that the Mantel-Haenszel effect size further reduces unnecessary splits in Rasch trees under the null hypothesis, or when the sample size is large but DIF effects are negligible. To make the stopping criterion easy-to-use for applied researchers, we have implemented the procedure in the statistical software R. Finally, we discuss how DIF effects between different nodes in a Rasch tree can be interpreted and emphasize the importance of purification strategies for the Mantel-Haenszel procedure on tree stopping and DIF item classification.

The modality and redundancy principles are two fundamental principles used to inform the design of multimedia instruction. They are based on a variety of experimental studies that utilized different types of multimedia lessons to compare input modes of graphics+audio, graphics+text, and graphics+audio+text with each other. However, a lack of control of multimedia lessons in previous studies creates a threat to validity because a single case scenario without following certain principles is not sufficient to represent a construct. Therefore, this study addressed this inherent validity threat and reinvestigated the applicability of the modality and redundancy principles when students learned during a controlled multimedia lesson. In this study the multimedia lesson was developed to follow a series of multimedia learning principles. These principles ensured that the lesson was representative of different types of multimedia lessons. Additionally, they ensured that the multimedia lesson was conducive to learning, since those that were not helpful would not be utilized for instruction in the first place. Eighty-six students in a research university in the US took a prior knowledge survey. They were then randomly assigned to the three input mode conditions and watched the multimedia lesson about the formation of lightning. Subsequent retention and transfer tests revealed that there were no statistically significant differences among the three input mode conditions. Therefore, both the redundancy and modality effects disappeared. This study provided an updated understanding of the applicability of the two important principles for multimedia instruction. Limitations and implications were discussed.

As a replication in the Chinese context of previous aptitude testing validation studies, this research aims at exploring the validity of an interpreting aptitude test battery, composed of the Logical Memory Test (LMT), the Scale of Language Anxiety (SLA) and the Achievement Motivation Test (AMT), in the prediction of consecutive interpreting performance of Chinese interpreting trainees. A quasi-experimental and correlational research design was adopted. The aptitude test battery was administered at the beginning of the first semester for 48 post-graduate interpreting trainees, and English-Chinese (E-C) and Chinese-English (C-E) consecutive interpreting (CI) tests, used to measure the interpreting proficiency of the subjects, were conducted at the end of the semester. Scores from the aptitude tests and consecutive interpreting tests were subjected to parametric correlation analysis as well as multiple linear regression analysis. The results indicated that (a) the LMT scores enjoyed a statistically significant positive correlation with C-E CI; (b) the SLA scores had a statistically significant negative correlation with both E-C and C-E CI; (c) there was no statistically significant correlation between the AMT scores and CI in either direction. Implications of the findings are discussed in relation to interpreting candidate screening and admission testing.

This paper presents the importance of the visual expression of factor decomposition in regression analysis, which is particularly worthwhile for undergraduate students whose majors are not mathematics but social science. The conventional purpose of regression analysis is to examine specific hypotheses empirically. In particular, the statistical significance of the explanatory variable was tested, which may have been difficult for many students to understand mathematically. To remedy this, factor decomposition is introduced in the same way that human body composition is broken down into water, fat, and muscle. As an illustrative example, multiple regression was applied to the determinants of housing rents in Japan. The explanatory variables were the living area, building age, and walking time from the nearest station. The findings suggest that, with the help of visual expression, a student can easily appreciate which variable significantly affects housing rents.

The residual differential item functioning (RDIF) detection framework was developed recently under a linear testing context. To explore the potential application of this framework to computerized adaptive testing (CAT), the present study investigated the utility of the RDIF[subscript R] statistic both as an index for detecting uniform DIF of pretest items in CAT and as a direct measure of the effect size of uniform DIF. Extensive CAT simulations revealed RDIF[subscript R] to have well-controlled Type I error and slightly higher power to detect uniform DIF compared with CATSIB, especially when pretest items were calibrated using fixed-item parameter calibration. Moreover, RDIF[subscript R] accurately estimated the amount of uniform DIF irrespective of the presence of impact. Therefore, RDIF[subscript R] demonstrates its potential as a useful tool for evaluating both the statistical and practical significance of uniform DIF in CAT.

Randomized controlled trials have proliferated in education, in part because they provide an unbiased estimator for the causal impact of interventions. It is increasingly recognized that many such trials in education have low power to detect an effect if indeed there is one. However, it is less well known that low powered trials tend to systematically exaggerate effect sizes among the subset of interventions that show promising results (p < [alpha]) We conduct a retrospective design analysis to quantify this bias across 22 such promising trials, finding that the estimated effect sizes are exaggerated by an average of 52% or more. Promising trial bias can be reduced ex-ante by increasing the power of the trials that are commissioned and guarded against ex-post by including estimates of the exaggeration ratio when reporting trial findings. Our results also suggest that challenges around implementation fidelity are not the only reason that apparently successful interventions often fail to subsequently scale up. Instead, the effect from the initial promising trial may simply be exaggerated.

We investigate two non-iterative estimation procedures for Rasch models, the pair-wise estimation procedure (PAIR) and the Eigenvector method (EVM), and identify theoretical issues with EVM for rating scale model (RSM) threshold estimation. We develop a new procedure to resolve these issues--the conditional pairwise adjacent thresholds procedure (CPAT)--and test the methods using a large number of simulated datasets to compare the estimates against known generating parameters. We find support for our hypotheses, in particular that EVM threshold estimates suffer from theoretical issues which lead to biased estimates and that CPAT represents a means of resolving these issues. These findings are both statistically significant (p < 0.001) and of a large effect size. We conclude that CPAT deserves serious consideration as a conditional, computationally efficient approach to Rasch parameter estimation for the RSM. CPAT has particular potential for use in contexts where computational load may be an issue, such as systems with multiple online algorithms and large test banks with sparse data designs.

Some Cochrane reviews were declared stable or closed, that is, not in need of updating. For some of them, it has been declared that conclusions will not (or it is unlikely they will) change with further studies. We explored whether there is a discernable decision-making pattern for decisions about the conclusiveness and stabilization of these reviews. We analyzed Cochrane reviews published until April 2020 labeled as stable or closed. We extracted the rationale leading to the decision declaring that the conclusion is not expected to change with further studies. Furthermore, we assessed whether the reviews used GRADE analysis. We extracted data from summary of findings (SoF) tables on the direction of effect, statistical significance, and I[superscript 2] values for the first and primary outcomes in SoFs, conclusions in the abstract and review, and implications for practice and future research. We included 40 stable/closed Cochrane reviews. Rationales for their stabilization did not enable any insight into the Cochrane's decision-making algorithm for considering the evidence as conclusive. Among 191 outcomes presented in the SoFs, 70% were rated with either low or very low certainty evidence. None of the reviews mentioned in the text that the review should be stabilized or closed, or that there is sufficient evidence on the subject. Reasons for stabilizing/closing Cochrane reviews were unclear, and we could not discern any pattern of "conclusive review" traits. Definition of systematic review conclusiveness is still lacking, which may contribute to research waste.

Using the Hartung-Knapp method and 95% prediction intervals (PIs) in random-effects meta-analyses is recommended by experts but rarely applied. Therefore, we aimed to reevaluate statistically significant meta-analyses using the Hartung-Knapp method and 95% PIs. In this methodological study, three databases were searched from January 2010 to July 2019. We included systematic reviews reporting a statistically significant meta-analysis of at least four randomized controlled trials in advanced cancer patients using either a fixed-effect or random-effects model. We investigated the impact of switching from fixed-effect to random-effects meta-analysis and of using the recommended Hartung-Knapp method in random-effects meta-analyses. Furthermore, we calculated 95% PIs for all included meta-analyses. We identified 6234 hits, of which 261 statistically significant meta-analyses were included. Our recalculations of these 261 meta-analyses produced statistically significant results in 132 of 138 fixed-effect and 114 of 123 random-effects meta-analyses. When switching to a random-effects model, 19 of 132 fixed-effect meta-analyses (14.4%) were no longer statistically significant. Using the Hartung-Knapp method in random-effects meta-analyses resulted in 34 of 114 nonsignificant meta-analyses (29.8%). In the full sample (N = 261), the "null effect" was included by the 95% PI in 195 (74.7%) and the "opposite effect" (e.g., hazard ratio 0.5, opposite effect 2) in 98 meta-analyses (37.5%). Using the Hartung-Knapp method and PIs substantially influenced the interpretation of many published, statistically significant meta-analyses. We strongly encourage researchers to check if using the Hartung-Knapp method and reporting 95% PIs is appropriate in random-effects meta-analyses.

Many experimental designs in educational and behavioral research involve at least one level of clustering. Clustering affects the precision of estimators and its impact on statistics in cross-sectional studies is well known. Clustering also occurs in longitudinal designs where students that are initially grouped may be regrouped in the following year and regrouped again in subsequent years. The purpose of this article is to explore the clustering effects of multiple waves of grouping on the effect sizes of downstream outcomes; that is, outcomes that are measured after one or more waves of regrouping. We center our framework on the longitudinal cluster randomized trial in which treatments are initially assigned by clusters (such as classrooms) and students are then regrouped into different clusters in subsequent years. This article illustrates how information on the intraclass correlations in longitudinal studies can be used to correct for biases in the effect sizes and variances, and how it can also be used to adjust the significance test for the effects of longitudinal clustering. This article also provides the first empirical evidence of the magnitude of longitudinal clustering effects using data from a state longitudinal data system.

School accountability systems increasingly hold schools to account for their performances using value-added models purporting to measure the effects of schools on student learning. The most common approach is to fit a linear regression of student current achievement on student prior achievement, where the school effects are the school means of the predicted residuals. In the literature, further adjustments are usually made for student sociodemographics and sometimes school composition and "non-malleable" characteristics. However, accountability systems typically make fewer adjustments: for transparency to end users, because data are unavailable or of insufficient quality, or for ideological reasons. There is therefore considerable interest in understanding the extent to which simpler models give similar school effects to more theoretically justified but complex models. We explore these issues via a case study and empirical analysis of England's "Progress 8" secondary school accountability system.

We introduce and evaluate three tests for publication selection bias based on excess statistical significance (ESS). The proposed tests incorporate heterogeneity explicitly in the formulas for expected and ESS. We calculate the expected proportion of statistically significant findings in the absence of selective reporting or publication bias based on each study's SE and meta-analysis estimates of the mean and variance of the true-effect distribution. A simple proportion of statistical significance test (PSST) compares the expected to the observed proportion of statistically significant findings. Alternatively, we propose a direct test of excess statistical significance (TESS). We also combine these two tests of excess statistical significance (TESSPSST). Simulations show that these ESS tests often outperform the conventional Egger test for publication selection bias and the three-parameter selection model (3PSM).

This article presents two alternative methods to null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) for improving inferences from underpowered research designs. Post hoc design analysis (PHDA) assesses whether an NHST analysis generating null findings might otherwise have had sufficient power to detect effects of plausible magnitudes. Bayesian analysis with default priors offers advantages over NHST for assessing null findings and detecting signals in underpowered data. Both methods are illustrated by application to Pager and Quillian's influential study on attitude-behavior correspondence. PHDA results suggest the original study lacked sufficient power to detect strong associations between employers' attitudes and behaviors. Bayesian analysis confirms strong attitude-behavior associations cannot be ruled out given the data. Together, these results question a frequently cited conclusion about attitude-behavior incongruence in survey vignettes. Overall, the examples illustrate how these analytical tools can be useful for describing uncertainty surrounding estimates and for improving substantive and theoretical debates across sociology.

Purpose: To assess the effect of 2 work-matched efforts of different intensities on subsequent performance in well-trained cyclists. Methods: The present study followed a randomized controlled crossover design. Twelve competitive junior cyclists volunteered to participate (age, 17 [1] y; maximum oxygen uptake, 71.0 [4.7] mL·kg−1·min−1). The power–duration relationship was assessed through 2-minute, 5-minute, and 12-minute field tests under fresh conditions (control). On subsequent days and following a randomized order, participants repeated the aforementioned tests after 2 training sessions matched for mechanical work (∼15 kJ/kg) of different intensities (ie, a moderate-intensity continuous-training [60%–70% of critical power; CP] session or a session including high-intensity intervals [3-min repetition bouts at 110%–120% of the CP interspersed by 3-min rest periods]). Results: A significantly lower power output was found in the 2-minute test after the high-intensity training session compared not only with the control condition (−8%, P <.001) but also with the moderate-intensity continuous-training session (−7%, P =.003), with no significant differences between the latter conditions. No significant differences between conditions were found for the remaining tests. As a consequence, the high-intensity training session resulted in significantly lower W′ values compared to both the control condition (−27%, P =.001) and the moderate-intensity continuous-training session (−26%, P =.012), with no differences between the 2 latter conditions and with no differences for CP. Conclusion: A session including high-intensity intermittent efforts induces a greater fatigue, particularly in short-duration efforts and W′, than a work-matched continuous-training session of moderate intensity. Context: Girls' high school volleyball is a popular sport with a high rate of overuse injuries and sport specialization. Health professionals perceive that high school athletes are reluctant to follow treatment plans involving sport activity reduction. This study's purpose was to describe high school girls' volleyball athletes' self-reported shoulder and knee pain, the likelihood of adhering to medical advice, and the association of factors that influence the likelihood of reporting overuse injuries and sport specialization. Study Design: Cross-sectional. Methods: Participants completed an online survey (demographics, sport participation measures, shoulder and knee pain information, medical adherence likelihood [4-point Likert: not at all likely to extremely likely], and factors influencing overuse injury reporting intentions). A 2 × 2 chi-square analysis compared factors that influence athletes' intentions to "not report an overuse injury" (eg, I thought my coach would get mad; yes/no) and sport specialization (nonhighly specialized/highly specialized athletes). Results: There were 150 participants (highly specialized = 56%, grade: ninth = 33%, 10th = 28%, 11th = 22%, 12th = 17%). At least 60% reported shoulder and knee pain related to an overuse mechanism. Most reportedly did not seek rehabilitation led by a medical provider (shoulder pain = 66%, knee pain = 60%). Only 11% of athletes reported they were "extremely likely" to rest from sporting activity during the regular season if advised by a medical professional. Highly specialized athletes were more likely to report the pursuit of a college scholarship as a factor that influences their intention to report an overuse injury compared to nonhighly specialized athletes (13% vs 3%, respectively, P =.04). Conclusions: Most girls' volleyball athletes did not treat their pain with guided rehabilitation, which may increase their risk of a worse overuse injury or even acute injury. Clinicians, athletes, parents, and coaches need to work together to create a sport culture that empowers athletes to discuss their pain and overuse injuries with medical professionals. Context: Poor knee biomechanics contribute to knee joint injuries. Neuromuscular control over knee position is partially derived from the hip. It is unknown whether isolated activation training of the gluteal muscles improves lower-extremity frontal plane mechanics. This study examined if a home-based hip muscle activation program improves performance on the Forward Step-Down Test as well as increases surface electromyography (sEMG) activation of the gluteal muscles. Design: The study utilized a single-group repeated-measures design. Methods: Thirty-five participants (24 females, mean age = 23.17 [SD 1.36] years) completed an 8-week hip muscle activation program. The Forward Step-Down Test score and sEMG of gluteus maximus and medius were assessed preintervention and postintervention. Results: Forward Step-Down Test scores improved significantly from preintervention (Mdn = 3.5) to postintervention (Mdn = 3.0, T = 109, P =.010, r =.31.), but this result did not meet clinical significance. sEMG analysis revealed a significant increase in mean gluteus maximus activation (P =.028, d = 1.19). No significant dose–response relationship existed between compliance and the Forward Step-Down Test scores or sEMG results. Conclusions: A home-based hip activation program increases gluteus maximus activation without clinically significant changes in frontal plane movement quality. Future studies may find clinical relevance by adding motor learning to the activation training program to improve functional muscle use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of knee joint range of motion (RoM) on the torque–velocity relationship and fatigue in the knee extensor muscles of 7 young (median = 26 y) and 7 older (68 y) adults. Each leg was assigned a RoM (35° or 75°) over which to perform a torque–velocity protocol (maximal isokinetic contractions, 60–300°·s−1) and a fatigue protocol (120 maximal contractions at 120°·s−1, 0.5 Hz). Six older participants were unable to reach 300°·s−1 over 35°. Therefore, the velocity eliciting 75% of peak torque at 60°·s−1 (V75, °·s−1) was calculated for each RoM from a fit of individual torque–velocity curves (60–240°·s−1), and ΔV75 (35°–75°) was determined. Fatigue (final torque/initial torque) was used to calculate Δfatigue (35°–75°). ΔV75 was not different from 0 in young (−28.3°·s−1 [−158.6 to 55.7], median [range], P =.091) or older (−18.5°·s−1 [−95.0 to 23.9], P =.128), with no difference by age (P =.710). In contrast, fatigue was greater for 75° in young (Δfatigue = 25.9% [17.5–30.3], P =.018) and older (17.2% [11.9–52.9], P =.018), with no effect of age (P =.710). These data indicate that, regardless of age, RoM did not alter the torque–velocity relationship between 60 and 240°·s−1, and fatigue was greater with a larger RoM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Imbalanced joint load distribution across the tibiofemoral surface is a risk factor for osteoarthritic changes to this joint. Lateral wedge insoles, with and without arch support, are a form of biomechanical intervention that can redistribute tibiofemoral joint load, as estimated by external measures of knee load. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of these insoles on the internal joint contact characteristics of osteoarthritic knees during weightbearing. Fifteen adults with tibiofemoral osteoarthritis underwent magnetic resonance imaging of the affected knee, while standing under 3 insole conditions: flat control, lateral wedge alone, and lateral wedge with arch support. Images were processed, and the surface area and centroid location of joint contact were quantified separately for the medial and lateral tibiofemoral compartments. Medial contact surface area was increased with the 2 lateral wedge conditions compared with the control (P ≤.012). A more anterior contact centroid was observed in the medial compartment in the lateral wedge with arch support compared with the lateral wedge alone (P =.009). We identified data-driven multidimensional physical activity (PA) profiles using several novel accelerometer-derived metrics. Participants aged 75, 80, and 85 (n = 441) wore triaxial accelerometers for 3–7 days. PA profiles were formed with k-means cluster analysis based on PA minutes, intensity, fragmentation, sit-to-stand transitions, and gait bouts for men and women. Associations with physical capacity and life-space mobility were examined using age-adjusted general linear models. Three profiles emerged: "Exercisers" and "actives" accumulated relatively high PA minutes, with actives engaging in lighter intensity PA. "Inactives" had the highest activity fragmentation and lowest PA volume, intensity, and gait bouts. Inactives showed lower scores in physical capacity and life-space mobility compared with exercisers and actives. Exercisers and actives had similar physical capacity and life-space mobility, except female exercisers had higher walking speed in the 6-min walk test. Purpose: To compare the standard Yo-Yo intermittent recovery (IR) test and an agility Yo-Yo IR test with a higher number of change-of-direction movements to cardiorespiratory match performance. Methods: The study included 11 professional male handball players (age 24.5 [4.6] y) of a German second-league team. The performance parameters of the players of the seasons 2016–17 to 2018–19 were analyzed. The Yo-Yo IR test was compared to a Yo-Yo IR test with multiple multidirectional changes of direction in response to visual stimuli, which was conducted on a SpeedCourt (Yo-Yo SC IR). Peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) and maximum heart rate (HRmax) were measured. Between-methods differences of individual athletes were quantified with Bland–Altman plots. Results: HRmax was not statistically different during the Yo-Yo SC IR test compared to the Yo-Yo IR test (181 [10] vs 188 [8] beats·min−1; P =.16). Agreement between the 2 tests was moderate for HRmax and good for heart rates >180 beats·min−1. Mean average VO2peak was 51.7 (3.9) and 50.9 (2.8) mL·min–1·kg–1 for the Yo-Yo SC IR test and the Yo-Yo IR test (P =.693), respectively. Conclusions: A Yo-Yo test with multidirectional changes of direction in response to visual stimuli yielded good agreement with the frequently used linear running tests and can be used to assess players' VO2peak. Multiple adjacent gingival recessions (MAGRs) are commonly treated with autogenous grafts. However, several intra- and postsurgical complications have been described following autogenous grafts, leading clinicians to explore the use of different biomaterials to treat these conditions. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the root coverage outcomes of a novel porcine-derived acellular dermal matrix (PADM) in combination with the tunneled coronally advanced flap (TCAF) for the treatment of MAGRs. Ten patients with 33 type 1 recession defects (RT1s) were treated with PADM + TCAF. The outcomes of interest included the mean root coverage (mRC), the frequency of complete root coverage (CRC), changes in keratinized tissue width, volumetric gain at the treated sites (assessed with digital intraoral scanning), and patient-reported outcome measures. All treated sites healed uneventfully, and no complications were noted throughout the study. At 6 months, a statistically significant reduction in recession was noted at the treated sites, exhibiting an overall mRC of 89.14% ± 19.15% and a CRC of 72.7%. The average volume gain after 6 months was 26.28 ± 11.71 mm3, and the mean distance between the surface/mean thickness of the reconstructed volume (DD) was 0.63 ± 0.28 mm. The region-specific volumetric analysis revealed an overall higher linear dimensional gain at the midroot aspect (range: 0.72 to 0.78 mm, assessed 1 to 4 mm apical to the cementoenamel junction) compared to the other regions. The present study presents the clinical and volumetric outcomes of PADM + TCAF for the treatment of MAGRs. Purpose: To assess the clinical performance of CAD/CAM laminate veneers placed by a single operator and systematically evaluated for up to 10 years. Materials and Methods: A total of 197 laminate veneers fabricated using either feldspathic ceramics (VMII) or lithium disilicate ceramics (EmaxCAD) were followed up to 10 years in 32 patients. Technical, esthetic, and biologic findings of each restoration were evaluated using modified United States Public Health Service criteria. The survival and complication rates were assessed using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and compared using log-rank test. Statistical significance was set at P < .05. Results: The estimated Kaplan-Meier survival rate was 91.9% after the mean observation period. According to the ceramic system used, the estimated Kaplan-Meier survival rate amounted to 92.7% for EmaxCAD and 89.1% for VMII. Survival rates were significantly affected by the location of veneer according to log-rank test (P < .05). A range of survival rates between 83.3% and 98.6% were observed based on the location of veneer. Conclusions: CAD/CAM laminate veneers milled from feldspathic or lithium disilicate ceramics have comparable long-term survival rates. Oral positioning affects the survival of veneers. The objective of this study was to compare a number of variables derived from the vertical and horizontal force components between loaded countermovement jumps performed in a Smith machine (SM modality; vertically restrained jumps) and with free weights (FW modality; unrestrained jumps). Twenty-three recreationally trained individuals, 6 women and 17 men, performed on a 3D force platform 5 maximal countermovement jump trials against 3 external loads (30%, 50%, and 70% of the SM 1-repetition maximum) using the SM and FW jumping modalities on separate sessions. The SM modality promoted greater values for virtually all the variables derived from the vertical force component (maximal force, maximal and minimum velocity, and impulse) and also shorter durations of the braking and propulsive phases. Regardless of the countermovement jump phase (braking or propulsive), the impulse directed toward the backward direction was always considerably greater for the SM compared with the FW modality. These results evidence that for recreationally trained individuals, the SM modality could be more effective to increase the general force capacity of the leg muscles due to increased external stability, while the FW modality is preferable when the orientation of force application is a crucial consideration, as it reduces the horizontal force component. Dementia-friendly communities (DFCs) are a policy-endorsed approach to community engagement in England that promotes social inclusion to enable people affected by dementia to live well. Research suggests that physical activity is beneficial in encouraging social connection and improving health. A mixed method sequential study design in England involving a national survey (n = 31) and semistructured interviews (n = 65) in three DFCs was carried out. The aim was to understand how DFCs enable people affected by dementia to participate in physical activities. An evaluation framework for DFCs was used to organize and interpret the data, and analysis was informed by the inclusive (social) citizen lens. Findings showed that DFCs offered a range of adapted dementia-inclusive and dementia-specific activities; however, people were not routinely offered information at time of diagnosis. There has been an increase in the use of commercially available multi-ingredient preworkout supplements (MIPS); however, there are inconsistencies regarding the efficacy of MIPS in resistance-trained women. Purpose: To determine the effect of varying doses of MIPS compared with caffeine only (C) and a placebo (PL) on resistance-training performance in trained women. Methods: Ten women (21.5 [2.3] y) completed 1-repetition-maximum tests at baseline for leg press and bench press. A within-group, double-blind, and randomized design was used to assign supplement drinks (ie, PL, C, MIPS half scoop [MIPS-H], and MIPS full scoop [MIPS-F]). Repetitions to failure were assessed at 75% and 80% to 85% of 1-repetition maximum for bench and leg press, respectively. Total performance volume was calculated as load × sets × repetitions for each session. Data were analyzed using a 1-way repeated-measures analysis of variance and reported as means and SDs. Results: There were no differences in repetitions to failure for bench press (PL: 14.4 [3.2] repetitions, C: 14.4 [2.9] repetitions, MIPS-H: 14.2 [2.6] repetitions, MIPS-F: 15.1 [3.1] repetitions; P =.54) or leg press (PL: 13.9 [7.8] repetitions, C: 10.8 [5.9] repetitions, MIPS-H: 13.1 [7.1] repetitions, MIPS-F: 12.4 [10.7] repetitions; P =.44). Purpose: This study aimed at evaluating the effect of level of competition and drill typology on loads during the preseason period in male volleyball players. Methods: Internal (percentage of peak heart rate [HR] and summated HR zone) and external (PlayerLoad per minute, total and high accelerations per minute [tACCmin and hACCmin], decelerations per minute [tDECmin and hDECmin], and jumps per minute [tJUMPmin and hJUMPmin]) loads were monitored across a 5-week preseason period in 12 Division 1 (age: 22.5 [3.9] y; stature: 188 [6.2] cm; body mass: 85 [11.6] kg; training experience: 9.4 [4.2] y) and 12 Division 2 (age: 20.7 [2.9] y; stature: 186 [6.2] cm; body mass: 77.8 [9.6] kg; training experience: 5.6 [2.3] y) male volleyball players. Furthermore, differences in load were assessed for each drill typology (warm-up, conditioning, technical, tactical, and integral). Results: No effects (P >.05) of level of competition on the internal (except for summated HR zone, P =.05) and external loads (except for tJUMPmin, P =.002) were found. Differently, drill typologies showed an effect (P <.001) on all the investigated internal- and external-load measures. The main post hoc results revealed higher (P <.05) percentage of peak HR, summated HR zone, PlayerLoad per minute, and tACCmin in warm-up and conditioning drills, while higher (P <.05) hDECmin and hJUMPmin were found in tactical and integral drills. Conclusions: These results suggest that volleyball coaches use warm-up and conditioning drills when aiming at increasing the internal loads, PlayerLoad per minute, and tACCmin, while tactical and integral drills should be preferred to enhance the number of hDECmin and hJUMPmin. Null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) is the default approach to statistical analysis and reporting in marketing and the biomedical and social sciences more broadly. Despite its default role, NHST has long been criticized by both statisticians and applied researchers, including those within marketing. Therefore, the authors propose a major transition in statistical analysis and reporting. Specifically, they propose moving beyond binary: abandoning NHST as the default approach to statistical analysis and reporting. To facilitate this, they briefly review some of the principal problems associated with NHST. They next discuss some principles that they believe should underlie statistical analysis and reporting. They then use these principles to motivate some guidelines for statistical analysis and reporting. Purpose: Studying physical activity in toddlers using accelerometers is challenging due to noncompliance with wear time (WT) and activity log (AL) instructions. The aims of this study are to examine relationships between WT and AL completion and (1) demographic and socioeconomic variables, (2) parenting style, and (3) whether sedentary time differs by AL completion. Methods: Secondary analysis was performed using baseline data from a community wellness program randomized controlled trial for parents with toddlers (12–35 mo). Parents had toddlers wear ActiGraph wGT3x accelerometers and completed ALs. Valid days included ≥600-minute WT. Analysis of variance and chi-square analyses were used. Results: The sample (n = 50) comprised racial and ethnically diverse toddlers (mean age = 27 mo, 58% male) and parents (mean age = 31.7 y, 84% female). Twenty-eight families (56%) returned valid accelerometer data with ALs. Participants in relationships were more likely to complete ALs (P <.05). Toddler sedentary time did not differ between those with ALs and those without. Conclusions: We found varied compliance with WT instructions and AL completion. Returned AL quality was poor, presenting challenges in correctly characterizing low-activity counts to improve internal validity of WT and physical activity measures. Warehouse operations have been significantly improved because of the rapid advancement of cyber-physical system technologies, preparing for Work-of-the-Future. The challenge, however, is how to design a collaborative system to deliver optimal performance by multiple agents who are highly distributed but interconnected and operate with technologies that provide massive amounts of real-time data. To address the challenge, in this article, the Cyber Collaborative Protocol for Dual-Cycle Task in Future Warehouse is developed to minimise total operation cost and time. The problem is addressed in two phases; the Global and Local phases. The global phase has higher computational power, maintaining a mathematical model, while the local phase has limited computational power and time, utilising heuristics to deliver the outcome. Computer experiments are utilised for validating the designed protocol compared with other alternatives. The results show that, in all given scenarios, the newly designed protocol outperforms alternatives with statistical significance. The original contribution of this research is the design and control of Cyber Collaborative Warehouse operations with a new focus on collaborative multi-agent interactions. In addition, a major implication is that future warehouses can benefit competitively by operating with Task Administration Protocols such as the new Cyber Collaborative Protocol for Dual-Cycle Task in Future Warehouse. Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autoinflammatory disease which may cause endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffness. In this study, we evaluated patients with FMF in terms of arterial stiffness indicators and investigated whether there was any difference according to colchicine response. This is a single-center, prospective, case-control study conducted on pediatric patients with FMF. Patients were categorized into 2 groups: patients on colchicine monotherapy (group 1) and patients who used anti-interleukin-1 (IL-1) plus colchicine (group 2). Patient age, mutations in the MEFV gene, overall duration of treatments, and general characteristics of symptoms were recorded. Laboratory values in an attack-free period were noted. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) was measured in all patients. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein, nocturnal hypertension, and PWV were higher in group 2. Nonylphenol (NP) is an organic pollutant and endocrine disruptor chemical that has harmful effects on the environment and living organisms. This study looked at whether kidney tissues subjected to increasing doses of nonylphenol generated alterations in histopathologic, pro-inflammatory, and autophagic markers. Fifty rats were divided into five groups of ten each: group I: healthy group, II: control (corn oil), group III: 25 μl/kg NP, group IV: 50 μl/kg NP, group V: 75 μl/kg NP. The kidney tissue samples were obtained for histopathological, immunohistochemical, and biochemical analyses. The histological deteriorations observed in all NP groups included tubular epithelial cell degeneration, inflammation areas, and hemorrhage. The immunohistochemical investigations showed that NP significantly elevated the autophagy markers (Beclin-1, LC3A/B, p62), pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6), HIF-1α, and eNOS in group III, IV and V compared with group I and II. The biochemical analysis also revealed that pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) increased in correlation with the NP doses, but only IL-1β reached statistical significance in NP treated rats kidney tissue. The biochemical findings have been confirmed by the histological studies. The damage to renal tissue caused by NP exposure may worsen it by increasing inflammatory and autophagic markers. Objectives: To evaluate the comparability of frailty assessment tools – the electronic frailty index (eFI), retrospective electronic frailty index (reFI), and clinical frailty scale (CFS) – in older residents of care facilities. Methods: Data from 813 individuals aged 65 or older, with frailty and co-morbidities, collected between 2022 and 2023, were analysed using various statistical methods. Results: The results showed significant differences in frailty classification among the tools: 78.3% were identified as moderately to severely frail by eFI, 59.6% by reFI, and 92.1% by CFS. Statistical tests confirmed significant differences (p <.05) in their assessments, indicating variability in measurement methods. Discussion: This study advances the understanding of frailty assessment within aged-care settings, highlighting the differences in the efficacy of these assessment tools. Context.--The Nottingham Grading System (NGS) developed by Elston and Ellis is used to grade invasive breast cancer (IBC). Glandular (acinar)/tubule formation is a component of NGS. Objective.--To investigate the ability of pathologists to identify individual structures that should be classified as glandular (acinar)/tubule formation. Design.--A total of 58 hematoxylin-eosin photographic images of IBC with 1 structure circled were classified as tubules (41 cases) or nontubules (17 cases) by Professor Ellis. Images were sent as a PowerPoint (Microsoft) file to breast pathologists, who were provided with the World Health Organization definition of a tubule and asked to determine if a circled structure represented a tubule. Results.--Among 35 pathologists, the k statistic for assessing agreement in evaluating the 58 images was 0.324 (95% CI, 0.314-0.335). The median concordance rate between a participating pathologist and Professor Ellis was 94.1% for evaluating 17 nontubule cases and 53.7% for 41 tubule cases. A total of 41% of the tubule cases were classified correctly by less than 50% of pathologists. Structures classified as tubules by Professor Ellis but often not recognized as tubules by pathol-ogists included glands with complex architecture, mucinous carcinoma, and the "inverted tubule" pattern of micropapillary carcinoma. A total of 80% of participants reported that they did not have clarity on what represented a tubule. Conclusions.--We identified structures that should be included as tubules but that were not readily identified by pathologists. Emlen (2017) advances our understanding of Proto-Quechuan, Proto-Aymaran, and their initial linguistic contact. We take as our point of departure phonological patterns of Proto-Aymaran and pre-Proto-Aymaran, some already observed by Emlen and some unmentioned but present with high statistical significance in his data, pertaining to affricate consonants. These patterns indicate that the first lexical borrowings into Aymaran from Quechuan, as well as a subsequent series of reconstructable sound changes, predate the stage of Proto-Aymaran proper. Results of these diachronic developments include the introduction of the place contrast *č ≠ *ĉ, the loss of the aspiration contrast for the affricate(s), and the conditioned application of contrastive glottalization to the affricates. This hypothesis has implications for Quechuan and Aymaran etymology and the internal linguistic histories of both families, including Torero's (1964) problematic observation regarding glottalization as a reflex of retroflection in Cuzco-Bolivian Quechua. Objective: The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a self-regulated dual task on muscle endurance within a single rehabilitation session in patients recovering from an elbow fracture. Design: This is a cross-sectional study of individuals recovering from elbow fractures (N = 20). Muscle endurance was tested using elastic bands at Borg’s CR10 intensity 3—during four conditions: singletask and dual-task for elbow flexion and extension. Results: The cognitive condition significantly influenced muscle endurance ( P < 0.001), while the type of elbow exercise (flexion or extension) did not show significant differences ( P = 0.592). The perceived difficulty of the tasks showed a significant interaction effect ( P = 0.032). The dual-task condition showed an average increase of about 15 repetitions. A moderate negative correlation was found between the differences in repetitions and the perceived difficulty of the flexion exercise (r = 0.677, P = 0.001). Conclusions: Dual-task with self-regulation enhances muscle endurance among patients recovering from an elbow fracture. However, the improvements seem to depend on the perceived difficulty of the cognitive task. The current controversy surrounding research replication in biomedical and psychosocial sciences often overlooks the uncertainties surrounding both the original and replication studies. Overemphasizing single attempts as definitive replication successes or failures, as exemplified by media coverage of the landmark Reproducibility Project: Psychology, fosters misleading dichotomies and erodes public trust. To avoid such unintended consequences, science communicators should more clearly articulate statistical variation and other uncertainty sources in replication, while emphasizing the cumulative nature of science in general and replication in particular. Objective While there are known racial disparities in cesarean delivery (CD) rates, the exact etiologies for these disparities are multifaceted. We aimed to determine if differences in induction of labor (IOL) management contribute to these disparities. Study Design This retrospective cohort study evaluated all nulliparous patients with an unfavorable cervix and intact membranes who underwent IOL of a term, singleton gestation at a single institution from October 1, 2018, to September 30, 2020. IOL management was at clinician discretion. Patients were classified as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) or White based on self-report. Overall rates of CD were compared for BIPOC versus White race. Chart review then evaluated various IOL management strategies as possible contributors to differences in CD by race. Results Of 1,261 eligible patients, 915 (72.6%) identified as BIPOC and 346 (27.4%) as White. BIPOC patients were more likely to be younger (26 years interquartile range (IQR): [22–30] vs. 32 years IQR: [30–35], p < 0.001) and publicly insured (59.1 vs. 9.9%, p < 0.001). Indication for IOL and modified Bishop score also differed by race (p < 0.001; p = 0.006). There was 40% increased risk of CD for BIPOC patients, even when controlling for confounders (30.7 vs. 21.7%, p = 0.001; adjusted relative risk (aRR) = 1.41, 95% confidence interval (CI): [1.06–1.86]). Despite this difference in CD, there were no identifiable differences in IOL management prior to decision for CD by race. Specifically, there were no differences in choice of cervical ripening agent, cervical dilation at or time to amniotomy, use and maximum dose of oxytocin, or dilation at CD. However, BIPOC patients were more likely to undergo CD for fetal indications and failed IOL. Conclusion BIPOC nulliparas are 40% more likely to undergo CD during IOL than White patients within our institution. These data suggest that the disparity is not explained by differences in IOL management prior to cesarean, indicating that biases outside of induction management may be important to target to reduce CD disparities. Penile skin zipper entrapment is an emergent medical condition in which the penile skin, scrotal skin, or foreskin gets caught within the teeth of a zipper or the slider itself. This can lead to complications such as urethral involvement, skin loss, or tissue necrosis. We propose a novel technique to aid in the release of entrapped skin utilizing wire cutters directed at the inferior portion of the zipper pull. To describe a novel technique to free entrapped penile skin and compare its performance to the well-established median bar technique in a simulated setting. A randomized cross-over design was used to compare techniques on successful release, time to release and tissue injury using an animal model of raw chicken skin entrapped in a zipper. Statistical significance was assessed at p < 0.05. Twenty-two participants were included. There was no statistically significant difference between the novel technique and the median bar technique regarding successful release (100% vs 95.5%, respectively), median time to release (29.1 vs 26.4 seconds, respectively), or frequency of tissue injury (22.7% vs 27.3%). Performance using our novel technique for removal of penile skin from a zipper is similar to the median bar release technique regarding. This article proposes a One-Covariate-at-a-time Multiple Testing (OCMT) approach to choose significant variables in high-dimensional nonparametric additive regression models. Similarly to Chudik, Kapetanios, and Pesaran, we consider the statistical significance of individual nonparametric additive components one at a time and take into account the multiple testing nature of the problem. Both one-stage and multiple-stage procedures are considered. The former works well in terms of the true positive rate only if the net effects of all signals are strong enough; the latter helps to pick up hidden signals that have weak net effects. Simulations demonstrate the good finite-sample performance of the proposed procedures. As an empirical illustration, we apply the OCMT procedure to a dataset extracted from the Longitudinal Survey on Rural Urban Migration in China.
