The International Ocean Discovery Program cored five sites during Expeditions 372 and 375 to investigate the Hikurangi margin, offshore Poverty Bay, North Island, New Zealand. Trench‐wedge deposits were recovered at Site U1520, and the frontal accretionary prism was cored at Site U1518. Based on X‐ray diffraction analyses of the clay‐sized fraction, illite and smectite are the dominant clay minerals. Compositional scatter is unusually large, and a well‐defined mixing trend is evident between illite‐rich and smectite‐rich end members. The proportion of smectite ranges from 9 to 59 wt.% at Site U1518 and from 12 to 62 wt.% at Site U1520. Nearby slope deposits at Sites U1517 and U1519 are more homogeneous, with consistently higher proportions of smectite. The East Cape Current is probably responsible for transporting smectite‐rich suspensions towards the south‐west from sources that include the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Illite‐rich muds require different sources and different routing paths to the trench. Some suspended sediment probably originated in the Waipaoa watershed on the North Island, entering the trench via Māhia Canyon. Other gravity flows probably started in Kaikōura Canyon or Cook Strait and moved towards the north‐east, down the trench's axial channel. The influence of turbidity currents on clay composition changes with water depth, as do the effects of reworking by contour currents and the role of passive hemipelagic settling. The broad continuum of clay compositions in the trench is enhanced by variable amounts of mixing among multiple ocean currents and fluctuating durations of suspension within a bottom nepheloid layer. That complexity deviates from the paradigm of turbidite‐dominated trench wedges. The margin's compositional diversity also complicates the goal of predicting or modelling three‐dimensional variations in frictional, geotechnical and hydrogeological properties. The fill of trench-slope basins is complex, varying temporally, laterally, and longitudinally. New data from the Neogene stratigraphy of the Akitio Sub-basin, Wairarapa, are presented to investigate such fill variation. The preserved basin fill spans an area 70 km long by 10 km wide, representing deposits from a trench-slope basin. Integration of sedimentological, micropalaeoentological, and geological mapping data charts basin fill evolution. Over 15 km of strata were logged, defining 17 lithofacies associations, which were mapped across the basin; these are interpreted to represent both shallow and deep-water environments. The deep-water strata show a temporal evolution from ponded turbidite deposition, to a period of basin spill via conduits connecting to downstream basins, development of aggradational channel-levees, and finally unconfined submarine fan deposition. Shallow marine deposits mostly developed on the up-dip basin margin occur contemporaneously with basinal mass-transport deposits, and in association with the growth of basin bounding structural ridges. Comparison with the evolution of the offshore, actively filling Akitio Trough highlights controls on trench-slope basin fill: a first-order influence of external controls, e.g. tectonism to create the basin; a second-order progression from under- to overfilled; and third-order lateral variation reflecting autogenic process and the effects of local structures on seafloor gradients. The purpose of this paper is (i) to re-assess the presence of submarine fan systems of Middle and Late Miocene age (Moki and Mount Messenger formations) previously mapped on the continental slope in offshore southern and central Taranaki Basin, New Zealand, and (ii), to demonstrate the occurrence of two newly mapped Late Miocene submarine fans in the deep-water part of offshore western Taranaki Basin, based on accepted seismic stratigraphic criteria for submarine fans. In our work we have found that the fans previously mapped amongst canyons and channels in the Moki and Mount Messenger formations on the upper and middle continental slope in southern and central Taranaki Basin do not fulfil established stratal criteria for submarine fan deposits. Moreover, detuning of 3D seismic reflection volumes for the Moki and Mount Messenger formation intervals ahead of amplitude attribute extraction, shows that the strata previously mapped as submarine fans based on amplitude alone, are merely artifacts of bed thickness. The two new fans systems of Late Miocene age that we map here, both attributed to the Mount Messenger Formation, principally comprise mudstone and represent a minor proportion of the Late Miocene succession that accumulated in southern and central parts of the basin. Our remapping of slope canyons and channels in the southern part of the basin and the identification of the two new fan systems in the western part of the basin are embodied in three new paloegeographic maps for the Middle and Late Miocene development of Taranaki Basin. A modern analogue for the two new Late Miocene fans in Taranaki Basin is the Hikurangi Fan at the terminus of the Hikurangi Channel, located outboard of the modern subduction zone of the Hikurangi margin along Eastern North Island. Advanced seismic data and multi-attribute visualization techniques, such as color blending of attributes, have considerably enhanced the capability of interpreters to characterize geological features in three-dimensional (3D) seismic reflection datasets. However, high resolution investigation of complex, vertically linked geological features such as channel systems and fluid conduits, remains challenging. These features may appear in the dataset as pronounced attribute anomalies, such as high-amplitude or spectrally or structurally enhanced seismic reflectivity bands, at several depth levels. Vertical linkages between these features, however, may not be readily established. We have developed an innovative method, Multilevel Composition, for an intuitive display of vertically connected features. Our method involves the composition of attribute maps from three different depth/time windows or slices onto a single map, in which inter-window/layer depth information is coded in colors. Multilevel Composition starts with the identification of suitable seismic attributes, such as high amplitudes in the examples displayed here, to map features of geological interest. At least one reference horizon is then identified and mapped in the vicinity of the target window of interest. Three sub-windows are then defined with respect to the reference horizon(s) based on the vertical and spatial distribution of the geological features. Relevant seismic attributes are computed for each of the sub-windows, and the resulting maps, one from each sub-window, are assigned basic color channels and are co-rendered to reveal multilevel linkages between these features. We demonstrate the efficacy of this method by applying it to two 3D seismic datasets, one illuminating deep-water depositional elements in the eastern Nile fan, eastern Mediterranean and the other targeting seafloor seeps and underlying gas migration systems beneath the Omakere Ridge, offshore New Zealand. The new method is simple and should be easy to implement to enhance seismic interpretation workflows. • Multilevel Composition is an innovative method involving color composition and co-rendering of multilevel attribute maps. • It allows to characterize multi-depth geological features based on theirspatiotemporal distribution in 3D seismic data. • It produces a single image map, coding inter-window/layer depth information in colors that reliably represent the geology. • In the eastern Nile fan, it visualizes and resolves the complexities ofburied clastic deep-water depositional elements. • On the Omakere Ridge, it successfully illuminated seafloor seeps and reveals their link to deeper fluid-bearing intervals. The 2016 Mw 7.8 Kaikōura Earthquake triggered simultaneous turbidity currents down ten submarine canyons along a 200 km stretch of the continental slope, east of New Zealand. They discharged into the abyssal Hikurangi Channel which flows >1500 km northwards along the trench floor as part of the Hikurangi Subduction Margin. One hundred and thirty-six foraminiferal samples from the 2016 turbidites and pre-turbidite sediment from 25 canyon/channel cores, collected during surveys 3 days, 2.5 and 8 months after the event, were used to provide insights into the complexities of these submarine gravity flows. Transport in the turbidity currents produced no significant additional breakage of foraminiferal tests, even when transported 650 km down channel. We conclude that highly variable planktic foraminiferal fragmentation index (FI) values indicate that test breakage in turbidite samples is primarily inherited from dissolution on the seafloor at their source area, which is often anomalously high because of lowered sediment pH as a result of the breakdown of the high organic carbon flux. All turbidite and pre-turbidite faunas have strong signatures of downslope displacement (presence of shallow-water benthics, size-sorted test distributions, low percentage of planktics). This is not surprising as all cores were taken in the canyon or channel floor pathways to collect turbidite sequences, with turbidity flows estimated to have a recurrence time of ∼150 yrs. Pre-turbidite faunas can be distinguished from the 2016 turbidites' faunas by having greater percentage of planktics and lower ratios of shallow to deep benthic tests (S/D Index). 210Pb profiles show that the laminated pre-turbidite sediment accumulated slowly and the foraminiferal content indicates it is composed of reworked earlier turbidite sediment with the addition of contemporaneous deep-water benthic tests and the rain of planktic tests mixed in. There are no consistent trends in any foraminiferal faunal parameters with distance displaced in the turbidity current (10–650 km). Rather, intra-turbidite (10–75 cm thick) faunal variability in a single core is often considerable and is attributed to erosion and entrainment of deep-seafloor tests by the passage of turbulent turbidity current heads, variable source canyon depths, different source canyon provenances, and test-size sorting during transport and deposition resulting in vertical and longitudinal fractionation of the smallest tests and finest sediment. This study suggests that a single foraminiferal fauna is often, but not always, insufficient to characterise a turbidite or for use in correlation with turbidites in other cores or exposures. • Foraminiferal tests showed little breakage during 650 km of turbidite transport. • Intra-turbidite foraminiferal variability is often considerable. • Turbidity currents sometimes erode and entrain deep-seafloor foraminifera. • Foraminiferal faunas can identify different turbidite provenance areas.
