Lithium‐ion cell chemistries are favored in the automotive sector, as they enable electric vehicles (EVs) to compete with traditional gasoline‐powered vehicles in terms of performance, range, and cost. The life and performance of these packs depend upon the Battery management system which monitors and controls the pack. The modeling, simulation, and analysis of a lithium‐ion battery pack that closely resembles an actual automobile battery are the focus of this paper. Real cells that are commercially available and specifically developed for automotive applications are modeled in the simulation environment. The cell characterization and formation of pack topology with heat exchange are addressed. A commercial electric car's power train model and EV dynamics are used in the simulation environment to test the modeled battery pack over various drive cycles. The performance analysis is upscaled by considering different aspects like resistive forces while driving, ambient temperature, initial conditions while the vehicle starts, etc. The battery manufacturer can verify the battery's performance under different load conditions, with a high degree of similarity to real‐world scenarios. Electric powered vehicle popularity gives us better option for reducing the hydrocarbon emissions for the clean environment and will help to minimizing the troposphere of ozone degradation. Evs that are powered by batteries are becoming more commonplace worldwide. A strong Battery Management System (BMS) is essential for the reliable and safe operation of batteries, which have been widely used in many large power applications, including EVs and hybrid EVs. Their optimal plan and the management are significant for safe and beneficial tasks. In the last decades of electric vehicle (EV) development, battery thermal management has become one of the remaining issues that must be appropriately handled to ensure robust EV design. Starting from researching safer and more durable battery cells that can resist thermal exposure, battery packing design has also become important to avoid thermal events causing an explosion or at least to prevent fatal loss if the explosion occurs. An optimal battery packing design can maintain the battery cell temperature at the most favorable range, i.e., 25–40 °C, with a temperature difference in each battery cell of 5 °C at the maximum, which is considered the best working temperature. The design must also consider environmental temperature and humidity effects. Many design strategies have been reported, including novel battery pack constructions, a better selection of coolant materials, and a robust battery management system. However, those endeavors are faced with the main challenges in terms of design constraints that must be fulfilled, such as material and manufacturing costs, limited available battery space and weight, and low energy consumption requirements. This work reviewed and analyzed the recent progress and current state-of-the-art in designing battery packs for superior thermal management. The narration focused on significant findings that have solved the battery thermal management design problem as well as the remaining issues and opportunities to obtain more reliable and enduring batteries for EVs. Power batteries are treated as heart of the electrical vehicles and they release huge amount of heat throughout both charging and discharging processes. Hence Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) is designed in order to control maximum temperature rise within a battery pack and to maintain even temperature distribution among the cells for increasing life span, efficiency and safety of the batteries. With an enticing characteristic feature such as low parasitic power, low weight, uniform temperature distribution among cells, passive thermal management system namely Phase Change Material (PCM) is justified as an efficient BTMS in recent years. The current work begins with the introduction of Hybrid Thermal Management System combined with PCM for enhancing cooling performance of BTMS. In addition to that, some of the thermal conductivity enrichment techniques for PCM (i.e. the usage of thermal conductive particles, cellular foams, encapsulation) are summarized. Research studies which involves various key parameters such as cell spacing, mass of PCM, thickness of PCM, specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity influencing the performance of systems are reviewed. Eventually, the results of several studies on PCM cooling are proposed in the conclusion part based on analysis of previous works. • Battery thermal management system of PCM assisted liquid cooling provides uniform temperature distribution among the cells. • Addition of high thermal conductive particles into the PCM helps in enhancing thermal conductivity of PCM. • Metal foams have a continuous skeleton structure with large thermal conductivity, and high structural strength. • Addition of high thermal conductive particles into PCM,CPCM which incorporates porous foams to PCM exhibits more conductivity.
